ROBERT MORRIS (3-3-0) vs. CANISIUS (1-4-3) TOP STORY
The Colonials picked up there second win in Atlantic Hockey after a series split with Bentley over the past weekend. In the Friday night contest, RMU would prevail 5-2 before dropping a 5-4 contest on Saturday. Prior to Friday’s contest, AHA commissioner Bob DeGregorio presented sophomores Jeff Jones and Tyson Wilson with their Student Athlete of the Year awards from the 2011-2012 season. In each of the first four AHA contests, the Colonials have allowed a power-play goal after a season in which their penalty kill was 89.9 percent. Colin South picked up three goals on the weekend, with two coming in Saturday’s defeat. On Friday evening, Scott Jacklin tied a program record with four assists in the team’s 5-2 victory. Also recording a multi-goal effort on the weekend was Adam Brace who contributed two goals and two assists. Senior Zach Hervato has nine points (four goals and five assists) in the first six games of the season. It took Hervato 27 games in his junior season to reach that mark. Freshmen Chase Golightly and Jay Llewelyn each picked up their first career goal in the weekend series. Zac Lynch and Mac Roy both earned their first point with Robert Morris as each recorded an assist against Bentley. After a three-game homestand, the Colonials will start a five-game road trip that will not see the team return to 84 Lumber Arena until December 8th. The first of the five games will see RMU travel to Canisius for a single game on Saturday.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS
Canisius opened up the season at the Kendall Hockey Classic with two games in the state of Alaska. After dropping the first game, the team picked up their only win of the season against Alaska with a 3-1 victory. Three of their next six games were against nationally-ranked opponents as they took on Western Michigan and Minnesota. The Golden Griffins would drop all three contests to the two teams while picking up a tie against Air Force in-between the two road-trips. This past weekend, Canisius would host Clarkson for a pair of games that would both end in a tie. In their eight games played, Canisius has been shut out three times while averaging 1.21 goals per a game. Leading the offense for the Golden Griffins is senior Preston Shupe who has four points (one goal, three assists) in eight games played. In the defensive zone, junior Ben Danford leads the team with fifteen blocked shots. Goaltender Tony Capobianco has seen action in seven of the eight games for the Golden Griffins while compiling a record of 0-4-3 while having a goals-against average of 1.94 and a save percentage of .938. Canisius is 3-28 (10.7) on the power play while the team is 32-36 (88.9) on the penalty kill.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CANISIUS
The Colonials be looking to snap a three-game road losing streak as they travel to Buffalo to take on Canisius. The last victory by Robert Morris in the state of New York was in the 2006-2007 season when the team was victorious by a score of 4-2. The Robert Morris program picked up their first ever victory in a 3-1 defeat of the Golden Griffins on Ocotber 22, 2004. After playing a single game in the two years following the 2004-2005 season, the two teams would meet again in 2009 for a single game that ended in a 5-5 tie. The following season, Robert Morris would join the Atlantic Hockey Association and the two teams would begin to meet three times a season. Since then, the Colonials and Golden Griffins have split the six games with Robert Morris outscoring Canisius 19-16. The last victory for RMU came in the first game of a two-game home-andhome series as the defeated the Golden Griffins 6-4 at the RMU Island Sports Center in February of the 2011-2012 season. Five of the eleven games have been decided by a single goal while three more games have been decided by two goals.
