LAST TIME OUT In their most recent outing, the Colonials traveled to West Point, N.Y. for a pair of games against Army. Coming in to the weekend series with the Black Knights, Robert Morris was ranked nineteenth in the nation while riding a seven-game unbeaten streak. After splitting the two games, the Colonials would leave Army with their tenth win of the season and a streak of 31 consecutive opponent power-play opportunities killed without allowing a goal.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 4TH
The first game of the series saw the Colonials’ unbeaten streak come to an end in a game that was televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network. RMU would fall to the Black Knights by a score of 5-0 in a game that saw senior goaltender Eric Levine’s shutout streak of 175:35 come to an end in the first period. The last goal that the senior had allowed came in the second period of the game at Penn State on December 15th. After allowing five goals on 28 shots, Levine was pulled in favor of redshirt-sophomore Eric Ferber. Ferber would play a total of 18:22 in only his second NCAA appearance. His first appearance came during the final minutes of the 2010-2011 Atlantic Hockey First Round playoff game against Mercyhurst. The native of Arizona would end the game against Army making eight saves.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 5TH
Robert Morris would bounce back the following night with a 4-1 victory behind the strength of three firstperiod goals. Levine would have a strong performance after being pulled the night before as the senior would make 47 saves, including 28 in the third period, to improve his record to 9-3-2 on the season. Freshman Greg Gibson would start the scoring for the Colonials as he scored less than five minutes in to the first period. A disputed Army goal would tie the game before Robert Morris would take back the lead. After a desperation save by Levine that saw the goaltender make a save while stretching post-to-post, the Colonials would press in to the offensive zone allowing sophomore Cody Wydo to set up for a shot from the slot to give RMU a 2-1 advantage. A third goal in the first period by Andrew Blazek with just four seconds remaining in the period would give the Colonials a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes of play. Jeff Jones would put the game away for Robert Morris as he scored an empty-net goal in the final minutes of the third period for the fourth RMU goal. Freshman defenseman Evan Moore and senior forward Zach Hervato both recorded two assists in the victory.
