Top Story - The Robert Morris University football team opens its 2012 campaign and 19th season of intercollegiate football Saturday, Sept. 1, when it travels to North Dakota State University and Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff (ET). The Bison won the 2011 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) national championship with a 14-1 record and enter the season ranked No. 1 in the preseason FCS Coaches’ Poll. Dating back to the program’s first season in 1994, the Colonials own a record of 9-9 (.500) in season openers. Under the direction of Joe Walton, the only head coach in program history, RMU returns 17 starters from last season. On the flipside, a total of five Colonials will be making their first career start, three of whom have never before appeared in a game for Robert Morris. Robert Morris returns home after playing the Bison as it opens Northeast Conference (NEC) play the second week of the season against defending conference champion Albany Saturday, Sept. 8, at Noon at Joe Walton Stadium. RMU will then take back to the road to meet Dayton Sept. 15 in western Ohio. Quick Stat of the Afternoon - Robert Morris enters its 2012 lidlifter with an all-time record of 9-9 (.500) in season openers, all of which have come in non-conference play. RMU dropped its openers in 2009, 2010 and 2011, but the Colonials have never lost four straight season openers. The game against the Bison will also mark the first time Robert Morris has played a nationally ranked opponent in a season opener … Top performances by RMU in season openers: most points - 47 (9/4/04 vs. Buffalo State); fewest points allowed - 0 (9/7/96 @ Mercyhurst); most rushing yards - 215 (9/6/03 @ Buffalo State); most passing yards - 282 (9/6/03 @ Buffalo State); most total yards - 497 (9/6/03 @ Buffalo State); fewest yards allowed - 167 (9/4/04 vs. Buffalo State) Saturday’s Opponent - Robert Morris and North Dakota State will meet for just the second time on the football field Saturday, with the Bison having earned a 43-17 victory over the Colonials in the inaugural meeting between the two programs in the 2010 NCAA FCS Playoffs at the Fargodome (11/27). RMU trailed by just three points, 20-17, with fewer than 10 minutes remaining in the game, but the Bison broke it open with three touchdowns in the closing minutes to set the final margin. D.J. McNorton ran for 110 yards and one touchdown for the Bison. On This Date (Sept. 1) in Robert Morris Football History - September 1 is the earliest date in program history in which RMU has ever played a game. The Colonials previously played on the opening day of September in both 2001 and 2007. Entering the 2001 season, RMU was riding a 17-game winning streak, which included a perfect 10-0 mark during the 2000 season. However, despite building a 17-0 lead at Buffalo State, the Colonials allowed 26 second-half points and dropped a 33-27 decision, ending the program’s longest winning streak. Jeff Carlo (1998-01) had kicked a game-tying field goal with fewer than five minutes to play, but the Bengals scored on a 39-yard touchdown pass with just 30 seconds remaining. RMU dropped its 2007 season opener as Dayton used three field goals and a defensive touchdown to claim a 23-12 victory. That game marked the inaugural appearance in a Colonial uniform by eventual all-time leading rusher Myles Russ (2007-10) as he notched the first 29 of his school-record 4,271 rushing yards.

Head Coach Joe Walton 19th Season - Pittsburgh ’57 At the forefront of the football renaissance at Robert Morris University throughout its 19-year history is Joe Walton, who has built the Colonials from a fledgling program into one of the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in the region. The one constant associated with the program, Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. He started the program from scratch, completing everything from hiring assistant coaches to purchasing equipment to recruiting student-athletes for the team’s inaugural season in 1994. Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football program, and to prove that, RMU has played its home games since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name. During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first Northeast Conference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000 and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship. “It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said this many times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but I wasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the perfect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what I like to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.” Under Walton’s tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-season titles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998, 2010). Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and 1997, and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-major national crowns according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eightgame winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC’s first bid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victory in the collegiate ranks.

Last RMU Game vs. North Dakota State Game #11 #25 North Dakota State 43, Robert Morris 17 November 27, 2010 / Fargo, N.D. Fargodome (Attendance: 12,202) - No. 25 North Dakota State scored 23 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game as the Bison advanced to the second round of the 2010 NCAA Division I FCS playoffs with a 43-17 win over Robert Morris. The Colonials, playing in the FCS playoff for the first time in program history, had pulled to within 20-17 with 12:05 to play thanks to a 46-yard field goal from kicker Greg Langer, but the Bison responded on their next drive to take a 27-17 advantage when Brock Jensen scored on a five-yard touchdown run. The big play of the drive came when Jensen hit D.J. McNorton on a screen, and McNorton scampered 61 yards to the five-yard line of Robert Morris. Evan Taylor fumbled the ensuing kickoff but was able to recover before being taken down at the RMU one-yard line, and on the first play of the possession quarterback Jeff Sinclair was tackled in the end zone by Matthew Gratzek for a safety, giving NDSU a 29-17 lead. North Dakota State got the ball back after a free kick and took control of the contest when McNorton produced a 12-yard touchdown run to cap a four-play, 55-yard drive that increased the lead for the Bison to 36-17. Mike Sigers added a 28-yard touchdown run for NDSU with 5:31 remaining to close out the scoring. The touchdown was set up by the Bison defense, as Josh Gatlin intercepted Sinclair at the RMU 30-yard line. In the first half, RMU took the opening kickoff and marched 69 yards on 10 plays to take an early 7-0 lead when running back Myles Russ scored on a five-yard touchdown run. Sinclair was the catalyst during the drive, rushing three times for 39 yards while connecting with tight end Shadrae King twice, including an 18-yard strike that moved the ball to the five-yard line of NDSU. RMU's defense made the opening touchdown stand in the first 30 minutes, as the only points the Bison put on the board came courtesy of Ryan Jastram, who connected on field goals of 34 and 51 yards. Robert Morris had an opportunity to increase its lead further early in the second quarter, reaching the NDSU one-yard line before facing a fourth-and-goal situation. RMU decided to go for it but was turned away when Raphael Johnson tried to spin away from a tackle and fumbled, turning the ball back over to North Dakota State. Last Time Out - Robert Morris tight end Shadrae King finished off a spectacular collegiate career the last time the Colonials took the field in their 2011 season finale at Duquesne (11/19). King caught two passes against the Dukes, closing out his career with at least one reception in each of his final 30 games, which shattered the previous program record of 22. King finished his career as RMU's all-time leader in receptions with 145, once again well in front of the previous top mark of 112. He also finished tied with former wide receiver Tyjuan Massey (2002-05) for the career record in touchdown catches (21) and placed second all-time in receiving yards (1,698). Last Time Out, II - Robert Morris wide receiver/return specialist Anthony Coleman posted 139 all-purpose yards against Duquesne in his final collegiate appearance in the 2011 regular-season finale (11/19). He had 118 kick return yards, 12 punt return yards and nine receiving yards to bring his career all-purpose total to 3,701. That mark matched exactly the sum posted by inaugural running back Tim Hall (1994-95) and is good enough to rank in a tie for fourth in career all-purpose yards in school history. Saturday Night Lights - Robert Morris travels to Fargo, N.D., Saturday to take on No. 1/2 North Dakota State at the Fargodome in a game that will kickoff at 6:00 p.m. (local time). It marks just the eighth time in the 19-year history of the program that the Colonials will play in a game with a kickoff after 5:00 p.m. RMU owns a record of 2-5 (.286) all-time in night games, with six of the previous contests coming on the road. Picking Up Steam - Greg Langer has settled in nicely as RMU’s starting placekicker, as the senior has hit eight straight field goal attempts and 12 of his last 14 in the last nine games. Langer finished tied with Charlie Leventry of Duquesne for the Northeast Conference lead in both field goals (12) and field goals per game (1.09) last season. Thanks to his 27-yard field goal against Duquesne in the season finale (11/19), Langer broke the RMU school record for consecutive field goals made. Former kicker Jeff Carlo (1998-2001) had converted seven straight over the course of the 1998 and 1999 seasons, while former kicker Michael Walser (2005-07) closed out the 2007 campaign by hitting seven straight field goals. Langer has not taken an easy path to the record either as five of his past eight field goals have been converted from farther than 35 yards. Experience Counts - When taking a look down the Robert Morris roster, the Colonials seem to have a bevy of experience at the defensive line position. Defensive linemen R.J. Cook, Farren Mason, Sam Miller, Steve Mitchell, Nolan Nearhoof and Chris Thompkins have combined for 83 starts during their time at RMU. Due to injuries, each member of the sextet saw starting assignments during the 2011 season. Miller leads the way with 25 starts, although the first 22 of his career actually came when he was a member of the offensive line. Mitchell and Nearhoof both have 22 starts while Mason has earned the nod nine times in his career. Start Me Up - Steve Mitchell enters Saturday’s game @ NDSU with the most consecutive starting assignments of any active Colonial. Mitchell has started 22 straight games at defensive end. A.J. Dalton is second in that category with 17 straight starts on the offensive line. Jeff Sinclair is the Colonials’ active leader in overall starts with 27.

We've Been Here Before - While a number of the key contributors to Robert Morris’ 2010 team have graduated since the Colonials’ last trip to North Dakota State, there are a few returnees that have been here before. Of the 53 RMU players that appeared in the 2010 FCS playoff game Nov. 27, 19 of them remain on the roster in 2012. However, only five of those players had starting assignments in the 2010 game--linebacker Brad Banas, offensive lineman A.J. Dalton, defensive linemen Steve Mitchell and Nolan Nearhoof and quarterback Jeff Sinclair. On Target - Senior placekicker Greg Langer, like many fellow kickers, may enjoy playing without having to worry about the elements. When RMU came to the Fargodome in 2010, Langer booted the longest field goal of his career to date while kicking in the enclosed stadium. Langer knocked a 46-yard field goal through the uprights, a kick that, at the time, brought Robert Morris to within three points (20-17) early in the fourth quarter. Any Given Saturday - Entering Saturday’s opener at North Dakota State, there are three Colonials who would have pretty good odds of seeing the field, judging solely by their past histories. Redshirt seniors Sanchez Faugue and Sam Miller and senior Eric Lowry have all appeared in 33 games in their RMU careers, tops among active players. Faugue and Lowry both have the distinction of competing in each of the past 33 contests while Miller missed the 2010 season, but played in every game in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Senior Steve Mitchell is in hot pursuit of this trio as he has seen the field in 32 games in his career, only missing one game during his freshman campaign of 2009. Fresh Faces - As with any other year, the 2012 season opener will feature the first collegiate appearances for some newer Colonials. A total of five Colonials are slated to make their first career start Saturday at North Dakota State, including three on offense. Junior Evan Taylor is set to receive his first career start after moving from defensive back to running back during the offseason. Sophomore fullback Ryan Thermil and sophomore offensive lineman Nick Faraci, both first-time starters, will help block for Taylor. Junior cornerback Malik Johnson and sophomore linebacker Mike Neilson are also set to receive their first-ever starts. Faraci, Neilson and Thermil have actually yet to compete in a game for the Colonials entering 2012. Hanging Chad - Safety Cameron Chadwick emerged as a leader for the Robert Morris defense in 2011 and earned All-NEC Second Team honors as a result. Chadwick finished with a team-high 80 tackles last season, including 32 solo stops. Chadwick really came on at the end of the year as he averaged over nine tackles per game in the team’s final half-dozen contests.

Last RMU Game Game #11 • Duquesne 45, Robert Morris 10 November 19, 2011 • Pittsburgh, Pa. Rooney Field (Attendance: 2,410) - Robert Morris concluded its 2011 campaign with its sixth straight loss, a 45-10 setback at crosstown rival Duquesne. Robert Morris scored the only points in the first 15 minutes of action, as quarterback Tyler Forbes, RMU's third starting quarterback in as many weeks, connected with wide receiver Jamie Cobb for a 35-yard touchdown pass. Duquesne rallied to tie the score, 7-7, when quarterback Sean Patterson hit Isaac Spragg with a five-yard touchdown pass. It was one of three touchdowns scored by the Dukes in the final 10:31 of the first half as Duquesne took a 21-7 lead into the break. Brooks Roorback would score on a six-yard touchdown run that gave the Dukes a 14-7 lead, and Patterson hit wide receiver Connor Dixon with a 12-yard scoring strike with just 15 seconds left before intermission to give Duquesne a 14-point lead. Patterson and Dixon hooked up for two more scores in the second half, one from 45 yards at the 2:16 mark of the second quarter and from 43 yards with 3:35 to play that settled the score at 45-10. In addition to leading the Duquesne ground game with 123 yards rushing, Patterson completed 17 of his 27 passes for 240 yards and four touchdowns. Dixon hauled in five passes for 117 yards and three scores, while Spragg finished with seven catches for 74 yards and a touchdown. Forbes finished 10-for-27 passing for 143 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Robert Morris, with Cobb leading the receiving corps with three receptions for 70 yards and a score. Running back Grayling Sanders compiled 92 yards rushing on 18 carries, an average of 5.1 yards per rush, while Deontae Howard carried four times for 25 yards. Defensive back Alex Tarr and defensive lineman Chris Thompkins tied for game-high honors in tackles with nine. 2012 Robert Morris Football Game Notes @ No. 2 North Dakota State (9/1/12) - Page 7 Making the Grade - Defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Second Team this past November, becoming only the second student-athlete in program history to earn two CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. Nearhoof had previously become the third player in program history to be named to the ESPN Academic All-America Team in 2010 when he earned second team accolades. Nearhoof owns a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.73 as a biology major and joined former Colonials Jonathan LeDonne (2001-04) and Ray Gensler (2003-06) to earn the honor. LeDonne, a linebacker, was named to the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team, while Gensler, a defensive lineman, was a two-time honoree, earning second team accolades in 2005 and first team honors in 2006. Nearhoof was also named as the NEC Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second-consecutive year. He was the fourth player in program history to claim that honor but the first to ever win it twice. Regulation Only - Entering Saturday’s game at North Dakota State, Robert Morris will have gone 58 consecutive games without having a contest go into overtime. That is the longest such streak in program history since the NCAA instituted overtime in college football for the 1996 season. In fact, every other current member of the NEC has played at least one overtime game since RMU’s last such contest. The last time the Colonials headed to overtime was Oct. 14, 2006 when RMU upset No. 19 Central Connecticut State, 23-17 (2OT), in what was the program’s first-ever game against a nationally ranked opponent. After Jacky Candy (2006) intercepted a Blue Devil pass right near the goal line in the second extra session, Erik Cwalinski (2005-08) hooked up with Mario Hines (2004, 2006-07) for a game-winning 14-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-12. That contest against the Blue Devils remains the only home game in RMU history to go into overtime. Preseason Honors - Robert Morris had six student-athletes named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-NEC team in his FCS preseason magazine. Four of the Colonials’ selections came on either the First Team offense or the First Team defense, a figure that was tied for the most in the league among that segment. Offensive lineman A.J. Dalton and fullback Nick Groat garnered a All-NEC First Team mention while defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof and safety Cameron Chadwick, both of whom are returning all-conference players, picked up All-NEC First Team honors on the defensive side. Defensive linemen Chris Thompkins and Steve Mitchell were both placed on the All-NEC Second Team. The four Colonials claiming preseason honors on the defensive side of the ball, three of whom were defensive linemen, tied Robert Morris with Monmouth for the most combined defensive players to claim such honors from a single team. Near a Record - Robert Morris senior defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof not only stands up in the classroom but also on the football field. Nearhoof claimed his secondconsecutive All-NEC First Team honor in 2011 despite missing the final two games due to injury. In doing so, Nearhoof became just the third player in the league, on offense or defense, to earn an all-conference first team award in both 2010 and 2011. He finished fourth on the team with 60 tackles last year, 24 of which were solo stops. He also led the Colonials in sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (12.5), totals that were good enough to rank fourth and sixth, respectively, in the Northeast Conference. Nearhoof enters enter his final season of eligibility as RMU's active leader in tackles (137), tackles for loss (23) and sacks (16). His 16 sacks are closing in on the program record of 19, which is currently held by Ray Gensler (2003-06). For Starters - When Robert Morris takes the field for the first time Saturday at North Dakota State, fans will be anxious to see what the opening-day lineup features. However, if 2011 is any indication, what you see one week may change the following Saturday. Due to a number of injuries as well as changes with the depth chart, Robert Morris used nine different starting lineups on offense last season. The starters actually stayed the same for three straight weeks in October (10/15, 10/22, 10/29), but RMU had changes in its lineup from one week to the next throughout the early and late parts of the campaign. The Colonials were forced into starting three different quarterbacks and also had five different tailbacks/fullbacks start a game. The only returning Colonial on offense who started every game in 2011 is lineman A.J. Dalton.

Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., announced this past January that RMU Assistant Head Football Coach John Banaszak has been named the program's coach-in-waiting. Banaszak, who has spent the last nine years as an assistant coach and assistant head coach with the Colonials, will take over for current head coach Joe Walton at the conclusion of the 2013 season. "Coach Walton has done a tremendous job starting the program from scratch and developing it to its current level," Coleman said. "We are blessed to have another outstanding coach on our staff in Coach Banaszak to provide leadership and excellence when Walton retires." The 2011 season marked Banaszak's ninth season as a member of the Robert Morris football coach staff, including his fourth campaign as assistant head coach. Among his many duties with the program, Banaszak is responsible for tutoring the defensive line and the special teams unit. During Banaszak's time at Robert Morris, the Colonials have led the Northeast Conference in total defense four times (2004, 2006, 2009 and 2010) and have finished in the top five in the league on eight occasions. Banaszak was a key component to a 2010 defense that led the NEC in total defense, allowing an average of 312.6 yards per game, and coaching a defensive line that recorded 13 of RMU's 21 sacks as the Colonials claimed the NEC's inaugural berth in the FCS Playoffs. In 2006, Banaszak helped tutor an RMU defense that led I-AA in total defense, allowing an average of just 228.36 yards per game. Under Banaszak's guidance, former defensive lineman Ray Gensler (2003-06) tied the RMU single-season school record for sacks with 11 in 2006 en route to earning All-NEC First Team honors. Gensler also established a career record in sacks with 19 thanks to 11 in 2006, and the Robert Morris defensive line that season recorded 28 and-a-half of RMU's school record 34 sacks. Eight of the 11 players in school history to earn All-NEC recognition on the defensive line have come under the tutelage of Banaszak, including Nolan Nearhoof, who led the Colonials with seven and-a-half sacks last year en route to being named to the 2011 All-NEC First Team. Prior to RMU, Banaszak served as the 30th head coach in Washington & Jefferson football history, leading the Presidents to a record of 38-9 (.809) in his four seasons on the sidelines between 1999 and 2002. In each of those four campaigns, he was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and ranks third on the college's all-time victory list. A 1975 graduate of Eastern Michigan with a bachelor's degree in health, physical education and recreation, Banaszak signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the 1975 season and was one of only three rookies to make the defending Super Bowl champion team out of training camp. Primarily a special teams player on Pittsburgh's Super Bowl X championship team, Banaszak started five games the following season and then started at both right end and inside tackle in 1977 before suffering a knee injury that forced him to the injured reserve list. Between 1978 and 1980, Banaszak started 45 regular-season games at defensive end as the Steelers won back-to-back Super Bowl championships. In Super Bowl XIII, Banaszak recorded six tackles, including a pair of sacks, and a fumble recovery in a 35-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, which garnered him Defensive Player of the Game honors. The following year in Super Bowl XIV, Banaszak finished with five tackles and a sack in a 31-19 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

Senior Nolan Nearhoof was placed on the defensive end/defensive tackle list while senior Greg Langer was named to the placekicker list. Nearhoof earned All-NEC First Team honors for the second straight season in 2011 after posting 60 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.
