TOURNAMENT PREVIEW 2015 NORTHEAST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT THURSDAY, MAY 7 - SATURDAY, MAY 9 NORTH ATHLETIC COMPLEX - MOON TOWNSHIP, PA. #1 Robert Morris | #2 Central Connecticut State | #3 Fairleigh Dickinson | #4 LIU Brooklyn Live Video: www.necfrontrow.com | Live Stats: www.sidearmstats.com/rmu/softball/ FOURTH FIRST-PLACE FINISH IN FIVE YEARS ON FINAL DAY Trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning in its regular-season finale last Saturday at Saint Francis, Robert Morris rallied for a 4-3 win that clinched the league’s outright regular-season title. Senior Samantha Santillo hit a two-run homer that turned a RMU deficit into what proved to be the final score. The Colonials have now finished in first place in the league in four of the past five seasons. REGULAR-SEASON MEETINGS AGAINST TOURNAMENT TEAMS: vs. LIU Brooklyn (April 18 - Moon Township, Pa.) RMU swept two games from LIU, but it was far from easy as both contests were in doubt till the final out. LIU took a 2-0 lead in the third inning in the opener, and RMU tied it in the bottom half. Tess Apke’s two-run homer in the fifth was the margin of victory although the Blackbirds had the tying runs on base in the seventh. RMU led throughout the second game as it took a 6-2 lead into the seventh. LIU pulled within one in the final frame and nearly came all the way back to tie it. @ Central Connecticut State (April 26 - New Britain, Conn.) RMU split two games at CCSU as each team won in shutout fashion. The Colonials took the opener, 2-0, behind a pair of Tess Apke home runs and a four-hit shutout by Nicole Sleith. The Blue Devils bounced back in the nightcap by jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning en route to a 3-0 win. Robert Morris got the tying run to the plate in the fifth inning of the second game but was unable to break through. RMU’s only prior postseason meeting with CCSU was a 1-0 win in 2011. @ Fairleigh Dickinson (April 25 - Hackensack, N.J.) RMU split two games at FDU as the Colonials won the opener, 6-1, before the Knights won the nightcap in their final at bat, 2-1. In its victory, Robert Morris tallied 12 hits as every Colonial starter reached base. An early 1-0 lead for the Colonials would not hold up in the second game as FDU hit a homer in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. RMU had a runner in scoring position in two of its final three innings but could not score. The Colonials have never previously faced FDU in the postseason.

THE 3G There have been 20 instances in RMU history in which a Colonial has hit at least .350 in a season (min. 100 at bats). There have been five seasons in which a pair of Colonials has hit above .350 in the same season, but Robert Morris has never had three players reach that mark in the same season. However, entering the 2015 NEC Tournament, there is a trio of Colonials positioned to do exactly that. RMU’s three players that have a last name begin with “G” enter the event above .350 as Jordan Gurganus, Ashley Gerhart and Kristen Gabelt are hitting .383, .374 and .357, respectively.

STRONG START Robert Morris won its first 11 games within Northeast Conference play this season, marking its best beginning to league play in program history. The Colonials had never before reached 7-0 in NEC games. This year’s start to NEC play by the Colonials was the best by any conference team since 2007. BETTER THAN OK Senior Nicole Sleith became the program’s all-time strikeout leader just under one month ago. She broke the Colonials’ all-time record April 12 in a sweep at Bryant. She posted 13 strikeouts on the day against the Bulldogs and enters the weekend with 917 in her career. The final two individuals she passed on RMU’s list have, at different times, served as her pitching coach during her tenure at RMU. Sleith is the only Colonial to surpass 200 strikeouts in a season at least three times in a career. TIMING IS EVERYTHING Senior Tess Apke enters the tournament ranked third all-time at RMU with her 26 career home runs. What might be even more impressive is the impact her long balls have had on Colonial games. Of her 26 blasts, 17 have either tied the game or pushed RMU into the lead when it did not previously have it. Apke hit four home runs in six games against this year’s NEC Tournament field. DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME Sophomore Jordan Gurganus enters the tournament leading the Northeast Conference in batting average at .383. She is vying to become the first Colonial to win a NEC batting title since Stephani Ehrenfeld claimed it in 2000 with her .372 mark. In fact, of the top four hitters in the NEC, three are Colonials as Ashley Gerhart sits second and Kristen Gabelt enters the event in fourth. Since the NEC began full round-robin play in 1995, no team has ever had three of its players rank among the top five hitters in the league in the same season. GOING STREAKING There are five Colonials that, at some point in the 2015 season, reached base safely in 10 consecutive games (Kristen Gabelt (18), Jordan Gurganus (14), Haileigh Stocks (12), Stacey Capp (11) and Ashley Gerhart (11)). Furthermore, three of those Colonials—Gabelt, Gerhart and Gurganus—posted doubledigit hitting streaks during the season, marking just the second time in the past nine seasons that at least three distinct Colonials tallied a double-figure hitting streak within a season. SLUGGIN’ IT Junior Kristen Gabelt has raised her offensive production in a variety of areas this season and is hitting for power at a rate not seen by a Colonial in recent years. Her .651 slugging percentage would be the best mark by a Colonial since 2007. Gabelt entered this season with 13 career extra-base hits, but she already has 19 this season—nine doubles, one triple and nine home runs. Her 19 extra-base hits are the most by a Colonial in a season since Brooke Panepinto had 19 in 2008. KEEP K’S COMING Senior Nicole Sleith added another record in her illustrious career during the her final regular-season game. Her final strikeout in Saturday’s second game, which ended the game and secured RMU of first place, was her 281st of 2015, breaking the RMU single-season record. The former record-holder is none other than RMU assistant coach Erica List. With a strong tournament, Sleith may have a chance to challenge for the NEC’s single-season strikeout record of 296 (H. Schwartzburg, 2011). PASSING THE CENTURY MARK Sophomore Jordan Gurganus leads the Northeast Conference with 59 hits entering the tournament. She is one of four Colonials (Tess Apke, Kristen Gabelt, Ashley Gerhart) that are among the top five in the league in that category. In fact, despite being in just her second year as a collegian, Gurganus has surpassed 100 career hits, becoming the first Colonial to do so since Jaci Timko finished her sophomore season in 2010 with 114 hits.

HEAD COACH CRAIG COLEMAN Craig Coleman, M.D., is in the midst of his 25th season as the head softball coach at Robert Morris. He has also doubled as the university’s Athletic Director since February 2005. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted just 19 victories in the previous three seasons. During his 25 years as head coach, the Colonials have compiled an overall record of 631-543-5 (.537), including a record of 275112-2 (.710) in Northeast Conference play. He has led RMU to eight NEC regular-season championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 1994, Robert Morris received its first national ranking in school history, regardless of sport, when the Colonials cracked the top 25 in the USA Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll. Coleman has claimed four NEC Coach of the Year awards even though the award was not given until after he had already won his first four NEC Tournament championships. Coleman’s success as head softball coach has come not only on the field, but in the classroom, as well. His players include 17 Capital One District II Academic All-Americans, five NEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year for softball and numerous NEC Academic Honor Roll selections. In fact, Coleman has helped the entire athletic department earn recognition for its efforts off the field. Robert Morris has claimed the NEC Institutional Academic Award in two of the past three years. In 2013-14, Colonial student-athletes that competed in 19 sports sponsored by the NEC combined to post a 3.295 grade point average. Coleman earned his medical degree from The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a native of Philadelphia, Pa.

2015 ROBERT MORRIS COLONIALS SOFTBALL

There are two assistant coaches on the Robert Morris coaching staff who are alums of the program. Both earned major conference awards while leading a team to a NEC Tournament title. KERI MEYER Meyer is one of the most accomplished players in RMU history. She led the team to the 2005 NCAA Tournament by batting .418, a singleseason school record that still stands, while posting a league-leading .472 on-base percentage and a .620 SLG%. She was named NEC Player of the Year that season and also claimed first team all-region honors for her remarkable contributions. Meyer was also the toughest player to strike out in Division I in 2005 and holds the best single-season at bat-to-strikeout ratio of any Division I player in the past decade. Meyer was an assistant coach for fellow NEC member Fairleigh Dickinson in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. She served as the head coach at Monroe College immediately prior to returning to RMU. Meyer helped the Colonials to a pair of NEC regular-season titles in her four years and was a three-time All-NEC honoree. She was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. ERICA LIST List, who primarily works with pitchers, returned to coaching for RMU after a hiatus for what is her eighth season on staff in 2015. List, formerly Erica Schwanke, led RMU to the NEC Tournament title in 1998, earning Tournament MVP honors in the process. She posted a 1.35 ERA in her senior season, third in single-season school history, and racked up 280 strikeouts, a single-season school record until last weekend. She ranked fourth in Division I in strikeouts per seven innings (9.5) en route to NEC Pitcher of the Year honors in 1998 while holding opponents to a .176 batting average. List also twirled four no-hitters in her junior year. List helped the Colonials to a pair of NEC regular-season titles, a then school record 34 wins in 1997 and a 48-11-1 record in conference play in her four years. She was a two-time all-region honoree, a three-time All-NEC First Team award winner and was also named 1995 NEC Rookie of the Year. She is one of just three Colonials ever to earn at least three first team accolades from the league. She was inducted into the Robert Morris Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.

NEC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK The following Colonials garnered weekly NEC honors during the 2015 season. Robert Morris was one of three schools to earn at least one honor in all three categories in 2015. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Feb. 16 Alexis Schwartzmiller March 30 Kristen Gabelt - Schwartzmiller hit .455 while posting a 1.000 slugging percentage to earn her award. Of her five hits, four went for extra bases as she tallied three doubles and her first-collegiate home run in a mere 11 at bats. All three of her doubles came when she had two strikes already on her, and in two of those three instances, there were two outs in the inning and at least one runner in scoring position. - Gabelt had a highly productive week at the plate for the Colonials as she hit .500 (6-for-12) with a fantastic 1.333 slugging percentage. She began the week by going 3-for-6 at Penn State before helping RMU get off to a quick start in NEC play by blasting three home runs in a sweep of Mount St. Mary’s. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Feb. 16 Nicole Sleith Feb. 23 Nicole Sleith March 2 Nicole Sleith March 16 Nicole Sleith March 30 Nicole Sleith - Sleith’s honor on March 2nd made her the first Colonial ever to win a league weekly honor in three consecutive weeks. She also was the first student-athlete from throughout the conference to win the same NEC honor three consecutive times within the same season since Jen Russell in 2008. Sleith’s most recent weekly honor was the 20th of her career, a RMU program record. ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Feb. 16 Olivia Lorusso Feb. 23 Olivia Lorusso - Lorusso earned her first weekly honor after hitting .417 with a .667 slugging mark on the season’s opening weekend. She blasted her first-career homer in her fourth game off a two-time All-MAC pitcher. She then claimed her second award after posting a .375 on-base percentage and a .571 slugging mark after five games in Florida. She crushed a three-run blast to turn a two-run deficit into a lead in a win over Sun Belt foe Texas State.

2015 NORTHEAST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

MORE MUSKET SHOTS AMONG ELITE COMPANY Senior Nicole Sleith’s record-breaking career has her among elite company. Among active Division I players, the two-time NEC Pitcher of the Year ranks among the top 10 in career ERA (1.58), strikeouts (917), shutouts (26), complete games (97) and saves (13). THAT’S ACADEMIC Robert Morris posted a 3.610 team grade point average during the 2013-14 academic year, the second-highest among all Division I softball programs. That continued an amazing run as the Colonials have now ranked among the top four nationally in team GPA, with a mark of at least 3.55, in each of the past six years. In fact, Robert Morris is the only Division I school to even rank among the top 10 in team softball GPA in every one of the last six years. MORE (GOLD) GLOVES THAN HANDS Senior Samantha Santillo has firmly established herself as one of the best defensive players in Colonial history. The league’s coaches voted her as the NEC’s Golden Glove Award winner in each of her first three years. In doing so, Santillo became the first player in league history to win the Golden Glove more than once and just the second-ever play in NEC annals to win any major postseason honor at least three times in a career. Her .994 career fielding percentage is the best ever by a Colonial. CONSISTENCY IS KEY Robert Morris has assured itself that it will finish with an overall winning percentage of at least .500 for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. It is the only NEC school that will be able to make this claim at the conclusion of the 2015 campaign. RAISING HER GAME Ashley Gerhart has raised her game to another level within Northeast Conference play. The local product hit a league-leading .457 in conference contests and was fourth in OPS within league games thanks to her .510 on-base percentage and her .739 slugging mark. While she has clearly found a second gear in 2015, Gerhart has always performed well against league foes. She owns a .391 batting average, a .456 OBP and a .627 SLG% during NEC play in her career and also has more walks than strikeouts. STUDENT-ATHLETES Tess Apke and Nicole Sleith were both selected Capital One Academic All-District First Team last year (this year’s announcement is expected in the near future). It marked the fifth time in the past seven years in which the RMU softball program has had at least two student-athletes named Academic All-District, an award which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom. Robert Morris is the only school in its six-state district to have achieved this feat at least five times in the past seven seasons. DOUBLE DIGITS GO DEEP Robert Morris’ 32 home runs this season have been hit by 10 different Colonials. This marks the first time in the past decade that at least 10 Colonials went deep in the same season. Four of this year’s 10 tallied their first-career long ball this season, including three non-freshmen (Stacey Capp, Jordan Gurganus and Alexis Schwartzmiller). APKE ASCENDING RECORD BOOK Tess Apke ranks among the RMU career top 10 in five offensive categories and is among the top three in home runs, doubles and RBI. She needs one more RBI to reach 100 as a collegian. WALK THIS WAY Junior Lauren Hackett crushed a two-run homer in extra innings to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 Colonial win as RMU walked off over Harvard Feb. 22. It was the first walk-off homer by a Colonial since Brenna Reed accomplished the feat in 2007. WEEKLY WINNERS YEAR AFTER YEAR Senior Alexis Schwartzmiller and junior Kristen Gabelt each won NEC Player of the Week honors during the 2015 season. As a result, Robert Morris became the only NEC school to have had at least two distinct student-athletes honored in the Player of the Week category in each of the last seven seasons. Along with this year’s honorees, three other active Colonials have earned Player of the Week recognition in their careers—Tess Apke, Samantha Santillo and Haileigh Stocks.
