SAL BUSCAGLIA HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON AT RMU
The 2011-12 Robert Morris University women’s basketball team is led by 32year veteran head coach Sal Buscaglia. Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, is entering his eighth season at the helm and has turned the Colonials into not only a Northeast Conference contender, but a nationally competitive program in his short time at Robert Morris. Four short years after inheriting a program that went 1-26 before his arrival, Buscaglia put the Colonials into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after winning the Northeast Conference Tournament in 2007. One season later, and with just three returning letterwinners, Buscaglia pulled the feat off again. Robert Morris returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 after winning the NEC Regular Season and NEC Tournament Championships for the second straight season. RMU captured its fifth straight 20win season, posting a record of 23-10, while playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. Through December 31, 2007, the Colonials had played the 59th-toughest schedule in Division I. In 2009-10, his Robert Morris squad set team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (17) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. The Colonials finished the season 23-9 while picking up a wealth of individual awards. Coach Sal was named the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year for the second time. Under his tutelage, Angela Pace became the first player in conference history to earn both the NEC Player of the Year award and NEC Defensive Player of the Year. Pace’s award marked the thirdtime a Buscaglia player earned the conference’s top individual award. Buscaglia showed imagination and innovation in 2007-08 on the offensive side of the ball, installing a dribble-drive motion offense to take advantage of RMU’s athletic guards. One of just two teams in women’s basketball running that style offense, the Colonials finished 23rd in the nation averaging 73.0 points per game, finished 39th in scoring margin (9.8), finished second in three-point percentage (39.6 percent) and were 29th in field goal percentage (44.3 percent). Coach Sal also turned former guard Sade Logan into one of the nation’s top scorers and the premier three-point shooter in Division I. Logan earned NEC Player of the Year honors, the second Buscaglia recruit to earn the award, while powering one of the top offenses in the nation. She tied the NCAA record for three pointers with 126 and averaged 24.7 points per contest. The 2006-07 Robert Morris squad won their first NEC Tournament since 1991 while putting together a record of 24-8. The Colonials tied for the regularseason conference title with a 15-3 record, then pushed their way into March Madness with a 68-66 win over Sacred Heart in the title game. Buscaglia has now led his teams to 13 national tournament appearances and only two losing seasons. The Colonials have finished with 20 wins in five of the last six seasons, including a 23-9 mark in 2009-10. His team’s 20-10 mark in 2004-05 with his first recruiting class improved upon a 3-24 record the season before, marking the third largest turnaround in the nation in one season. Along the way, Buscaglia tallied his 600th career head coaching victory and currently boosts an overall coaching record of 613-278. Buscaglia’s teams own five of the seven 20win seasons and are the only squads to win 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons since the program’s inception in 1977. Despite not having the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Sugiery Monsac, for almost the entire season due to an injury, Coach Sal led the Colonials to the conference semifinals in 2005-06, one year after making it to the conference championship. The Colonials earned victories over Horizon League teams Youngstown State, Loyola (Ill.) and
Cleveland State, along with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Norfolk State. The Colonials also made it to the championship game in the Best Western Roundball Classic before falling to Big East opponent and tournament host South Florida, a 2006 NCAA Tournament team. During the 2004-05 season, the Colonials posted victories over Mid-American teams Akron and Marshall, along with Atlantic-10 member and cross-town rival Duquesne. In addition, Robert Morris beat St. Francis (Pa.), Mount St. Mary’s, and Monmouth. Prior to his arrival the team had 16, 15, and 13game losing streaks, respectively, against those teams. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College (1998-2003). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 17-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was recognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. In five seasons at Manhattan, Buscaglia compiled a record of 7965, including a 20-10 record and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 2002-03. Buscaglia’s Manhattan team received votes in the Top 25 in 2002-03 as the Jaspers claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The MAAC championship in 2003 was the first league title in school history. Manhattan’s 20-10 overall record was also the best in school history. In 2001-02 he guided the jaspers to an 18-10 overall record and was named the Co-Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For eight seasons prior to his arrival at Manhattan, Buscaglia was head coach of the University at Buffalo from 1990-98 and led the Bulls to five 20-win campaigns. In its first season in Division I competition in 1991-92, Buffalo finished with a 23-6 record, which was the 10th highest winning percentage (.793) in Division I that season. The Bulls won East Coast Conference regular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tournament championships in 1992 and 1994. In 1994-95, Buffalo moved to the Mid-Continent Conference and Buscaglia led the Bulls to a share of the Mid-Con regularseason title in 1995 and an appearance in the conference tournament finals in 1997. In each of Buffalo’s first three seasons in the Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1996. Buscaglia started his coaching career at Hilbert Junior College, in Hamburg, New York, where in 12 seasons from 1977-90 he amassed a record of 249-62. During his tenure at Hilbert, his teams collected 93 straight league wins, eight straight Region Tournament Championships (1982-90), eight straight regular season conference championships (1982-90) and eight straight National Tournament appearances (1982-90). In 1988-89 his team finished in the elite eight. Coach Sal is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia’s squad reached the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament eight straight seasons from 1982-83 to 1989-90, with the 1889-90 team reaching the NJCAA National Tournament final six. He is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia also has coaching experience with USA Basketball, having served as an assistant coach at the 1992 Summer Olympic Festival and as a Trial Coach at the 1989 Summer Olympic Festival. From 1986-93, Buscaglia served as head western division coach of the Empire State Games, helping coach the top players in the state to numerous medals. Over his career, Buscaglia has won eight conference titles at the Division I level and has averaged over 19 victories per year. In his 20 years as a Division I head coach, Buscaglia has guided his teams to winning seasons in 11 of them. He also owns 14 Coach of the Year honors. A native of Buffalo, New York, Buscaglia is a 1976 graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and accounting and in 1989 earned a Master’s Degree in physical education, also from Canisius. In 1980, Buscaglia received a Master’s Degree in business education from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Buscaglia, a proud father and grandfather, has a son Charlie, who is associate head coach of the Colonials, and a daughter, Deanna. Deanna resides in Lancaster, N.Y. with her husband Mark and their children Paityn (7), Shane (5) and Eva (2).

LAST TIME OUT Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center -Senior forward Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey (British National Team)) tallied 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Robert Morris University women’s basketball held off Monmouth for a 57-54 win in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams at the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday afternoon. The Colonials are off to the best start in team history, improving to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Monmouth slips to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Durojaye went 9-of-13 from the field, setting a career-record for field goals. She had five boards on the offensive end and added six defensive rebounds. Fellow countryman Josette Campbell (London, England / Notre Dame Prep (Northwest Florida State)) narrowly missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. She added four assists, a block and a steal while playing 39 minutes as she filled up the stat sheet. Sophomore Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni (Greek National Team)) finished with 13 points and eight boards. After holding the lead for much of the game, RMU watched Monmouth mount a 9-0 run that gave them a 47-43 lead with 5:16 to play. Carly Thibault scored six of her team-best 14 points during the surge. A steal by junior guard Briannica Tye (Aurora, Ill. / West Aurora (Mineral Area)) led to a pair of free throws for her. The play keyed a 12-0 answer by the Colonials. Durojaye scored six of her 19 points during the game’s deciding run, scoring on a pair of jumpers and finishing a lay-up off one of Tye’s seven assists. When Spanou buried a 12-foot jumper, RMU was holding a 55-47 lead with 2:15 to play. The Hawks would not go away, however, as Gabby Singer and Thibault splashed treys in the final two minutes. When Tye committed her 11th turnover of the game, Monmouth had a chance to tie the game as they took possession with 42 seconds to play. Durojaye had an opportunity to ice the game with free throws, leading by three points with 35 seconds to play, but could not. Fortunately for RMU, Thibault and Alexis Canady missed three-pointers in the final 10 seconds to end the game’s scoring at 57-54. RMU sprinted to a 15-4 lead seven minutes into the game fueled by six early Hawks turnovers. The Colonials stretched the lead to as many as 13 points as they carried a 28-19 lead into the halftime locker room. Fifteen first-half turnovers by Monmouth led to 18 points for RMU. The Colonials turned the ball over 25 times for the third consecutive game, but managed to ride 41.5 percent (22-53) shooting to the victory. RMU forced 26 turnovers by the Hawks and scored 30 points off of those miscues. Monmouth shot 36.8 percent (21-57) for the game after improving to 46.7 percent (14-30) in the second half. The Colonials held the rebounding advantage, 39-34. Robert Morris continues its abbreviated foray into conference play by hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at the Sewall Center this Monday, Dec. 5. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.

HARTWELL HOOPING WELL Sophomore Kelly Hartwell had a breakout performance at the East Carolina Thanksgiving Classic, tallying career-highs for points (20 vs. Delaware State) and rebounds (9 vs. Elon) in back-to-back games. The Woodbridge, Va., native earned a spot on the all-tournament team averaging 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting 11-15 (.733) from the field. STOP THE BALL The Colonials are averaging 10.3 fast break points per game and have allowed opponents just an average of 3.0 fast break points per contest. NOT VALUING THE BALL The Colonials have not valued the ball this season averaging 21.8 turnovers per game this season. The problem was magnified in a twopoint loss at Stony Brook where RMU had a season-high 25 miscues. The Seawolves scored 16 of their 42 points, 30 percent, off of the RMU giveaways. CHUCK’S CHARMS The Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. “The Chuck”, has lent a certain advantage for the Colonials over the past nine seasons. Since 2004-05, Robert Morris is 79-19 (.806) in home games.

CHUCK’S CONFERENCE CHARMS The Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. “The Chuck”, has become a formidable place for Northeast Conference opponents to visit. Dating back to the 2004-05 season, head coach Sal Buscaglia’s second season in Moon Township, RMU is 51-10 at home against league teams. The 2005-06 team won all nine of its conference home games. HOW MAY I ASSIST YOU? Junior Briannica Tye dished out nine assists in her Colonials debut. That total marks the highest single player assist total since former star Angela Pace (2008-10) dished out nine dimes in a 20-point win at Mount St. Mary’s on February 27, 2010. Tye leads the Northeast Conference in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio.

WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS? The “Financier of the American Revolution.” He isn’t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies’ bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded.
ROBERT MORRIS FACTS Birthplace Liverpool, England Date of Birth Jan. 20, 1734 Death May 8, 1806 Occupation Importer / Exporter Superintendent of Finance Senator
Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. CHARLIE BUSCAGLIA A TOP MID-MAJOR ASSISTANT COACHES A recent column on collegeinsider.com by Jason Belzer listed RMU associate head coach Charlie Buscaglia ninth on a list of the “Top 25 Mid-Major Women’s College Basketball Assistants”. Buscaglia is ninth on a list that is topped by 24-year Kent State associate head coach Lori Bodnar. The Colonials beat the Golden Flashes by 34 points early this season. JUST KENT GET ENOUGH ... TURNOVERS The Colonials forced Kent State to turn the ball over 36 times Tuesday, the most since Seton Hill committed 36 turnovers in a November 29, 2003, game. St. Francis (N.Y.) had 37 turnovers in a game against RMU during the 1995-96 season with the record being held by East Tennesee State. The Buccaneers had 44 miscues on Dec. 17, 1996. NON-CONFERENCE MARGIN OF VICTORY The 34-point margin of victory by Robert Morris against Kent State was the team’s biggest victory in a non-conference game since pounding Longwood, 96-62, on Dec. 28, 2006. 500 REBOUND CLUB In the final regular season game of last season, senior Mary Durojaye became the 17th player in team history to record 500 career rebounds. Durojaye finished sixth in the NEC in rebounding last season, pulling down 236 boards for an average of 7.9 per game. Durojaye sits 16th all-time on the Colonials rebounding list, moving past the shortest 500-rebound club member in Angela Pace (2008-10).

2011-12 ROBERT MORRIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL — VS. FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON KNIGHTS
The Robert Morris University women’s basketball team was selected second in the 2011-12 Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll released by the league Thursday. This is the second straight season the Colonials were picked second in the preseason poll and the seventh consecutive season RMU has been selected among the topfour teams in the league. Robert Morris received two firstplace votes. Two-time defending champion Saint Francis (Pa.) received four first-place votes to earn the top spot in the poll. Long Island follows RMU at third in the poll while Sacred Heart and Monmouth tied for fourth, each receiving two first-place votes. Quinnipiac was sixth followed by Fairleigh Dickinson, Bryant, Central Connecticut State, Wagner, Mount St. Mary’s and St. Francis (N.Y.). Sophomore forward Artemis Spanou was the only underclassman named to the Preseason All-NEC Team. The 2011 NEC Rookie of the Year, Spanou averaged a doubledouble in league games with 13.7 points and 10.6 rebounds per contest as a freshman. She also earned spots on the NEC All-Conference Second Team and the NEC All-Rookie team last season. The Colonials return two starters and six letterwinners from a team that went 16-14 overall and 12-6 in Northeast Conference play in 2010-11. RMU advanced to the NEC Tournament semifinals after finishing in a tie for third in the conference standings. Senior forward Mary Durojaye is the only other returning forward besides Spanou. As a junior, Durojaye became the 16th player in team history to collect 500 career rebounds while averaging 7.9 boards for the season. She added 10.1 points a game and finished third in the NEC shooting 52.0 percent (118-227) from the floor. Robert Morris is led by ninth-year head coach Sal Buscaglia, a two-time winner of the NEC’s Brenda Reilly Coach of the Year award. In 33 seasons as a head coach, Buscaglia has won 629 career games, and has built the Colonials program into a conference power. 2011-12 NEC PRESEASON COACHES POLL 1. Saint Francis (Pa.) (4) 2.
