SAL BUSCAGLIA HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON AT RMU
The 2011-12 Robert Morris University women’s basketball team is led by 32year veteran head coach Sal Buscaglia. Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, is entering his eighth season at the helm and has turned the Colonials into not only a Northeast Conference contender, but a nationally competitive program in his short time at Robert Morris. Four short years after inheriting a program that went 1-26 before his arrival, Buscaglia put the Colonials into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after winning the Northeast Conference Tournament in 2007. One season later, and with just three returning letterwinners, Buscaglia pulled the feat off again. Robert Morris returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 after winning the NEC Regular Season and NEC Tournament Championships for the second straight season. RMU captured its fifth straight 20win season, posting a record of 23-10, while playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. Through December 31, 2007, the Colonials had played the 59th-toughest schedule in Division I. In 2009-10, his Robert Morris squad set team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (17) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. The Colonials finished the season 23-9 while picking up a wealth of individual awards. Coach Sal was named the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year for the second time. Under his tutelage, Angela Pace became the first player in conference history to earn both the NEC Player of the Year award and NEC Defensive Player of the Year. Pace’s award marked the thirdtime a Buscaglia player earned the conference’s top individual award. Buscaglia showed imagination and innovation in 2007-08 on the offensive side of the ball, installing a dribble-drive motion offense to take advantage of RMU’s athletic guards. One of just two teams in women’s basketball running that style offense, the Colonials finished 23rd in the nation averaging 73.0 points per game, finished 39th in scoring margin (9.8), finished second in three-point percentage (39.6 percent) and were 29th in field goal percentage (44.3 percent). Coach Sal also turned former guard Sade Logan into one of the nation’s top scorers and the premier three-point shooter in Division I. Logan earned NEC Player of the Year honors, the second Buscaglia recruit to earn the award, while powering one of the top offenses in the nation. She tied the NCAA record for three pointers with 126 and averaged 24.7 points per contest. The 2006-07 Robert Morris squad won their first NEC Tournament since 1991 while putting together a record of 24-8. The Colonials tied for the regularseason conference title with a 15-3 record, then pushed their way into March Madness with a 68-66 win over Sacred Heart in the title game. Buscaglia has now led his teams to 13 national tournament appearances and only two losing seasons. The Colonials have finished with 20 wins in five of the last six seasons, including a 23-9 mark in 2009-10. His team’s 20-10 mark in 2004-05 with his first recruiting class improved upon a 3-24 record the season before, marking the third largest turnaround in the nation in one season. Along the way, Buscaglia tallied his 600th career head coaching victory and currently boosts an overall coaching record of 613-278. Buscaglia’s teams own five of the seven 20win seasons and are the only squads to win 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons since the program’s inception in 1977. Despite not having the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Sugiery Monsac, for almost the entire season due to an injury, Coach Sal led the Colonials to the conference semifinals in 2005-06, one year after making it to the conference championship. The Colonials earned victories over Horizon League teams Youngstown State, Loyola (Ill.) and
Cleveland State, along with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Norfolk State. The Colonials also made it to the championship game in the Best Western Roundball Classic before falling to Big East opponent and tournament host South Florida, a 2006 NCAA Tournament team. During the 2004-05 season, the Colonials posted victories over Mid-American teams Akron and Marshall, along with Atlantic-10 member and cross-town rival Duquesne. In addition, Robert Morris beat St. Francis (Pa.), Mount St. Mary’s, and Monmouth. Prior to his arrival the team had 16, 15, and 13game losing streaks, respectively, against those teams. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College (1998-2003). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 17-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was recognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. In five seasons at Manhattan, Buscaglia compiled a record of 7965, including a 20-10 record and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 2002-03. Buscaglia’s Manhattan team received votes in the Top 25 in 2002-03 as the Jaspers claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The MAAC championship in 2003 was the first league title in school history. Manhattan’s 20-10 overall record was also the best in school history. In 2001-02 he guided the jaspers to an 18-10 overall record and was named the Co-Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For eight seasons prior to his arrival at Manhattan, Buscaglia was head coach of the University at Buffalo from 1990-98 and led the Bulls to five 20-win campaigns. In its first season in Division I competition in 1991-92, Buffalo finished with a 23-6 record, which was the 10th highest winning percentage (.793) in Division I that season. The Bulls won East Coast Conference regular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tournament championships in 1992 and 1994. In 1994-95, Buffalo moved to the Mid-Continent Conference and Buscaglia led the Bulls to a share of the Mid-Con regularseason title in 1995 and an appearance in the conference tournament finals in 1997. In each of Buffalo’s first three seasons in the Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1996. Buscaglia started his coaching career at Hilbert Junior College, in Hamburg, New York, where in 12 seasons from 1977-90 he amassed a record of 249-62. During his tenure at Hilbert, his teams collected 93 straight league wins, eight straight Region Tournament Championships (1982-90), eight straight regular season conference championships (1982-90) and eight straight National Tournament appearances (1982-90). In 1988-89 his team finished in the elite eight. Coach Sal is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia’s squad reached the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament eight straight seasons from 1982-83 to 1989-90, with the 1889-90 team reaching the NJCAA National Tournament final six. He is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia also has coaching experience with USA Basketball, having served as an assistant coach at the 1992 Summer Olympic Festival and as a Trial Coach at the 1989 Summer Olympic Festival. From 1986-93, Buscaglia served as head western division coach of the Empire State Games, helping coach the top players in the state to numerous medals. Over his career, Buscaglia has won eight conference titles at the Division I level and has averaged over 19 victories per year. In his 20 years as a Division I head coach, Buscaglia has guided his teams to winning seasons in 11 of them. He also owns 14 Coach of the Year honors. A native of Buffalo, New York, Buscaglia is a 1976 graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and accounting and in 1989 earned a Master’s Degree in physical education, also from Canisius. In 1980, Buscaglia received a Master’s Degree in business education from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Buscaglia, a proud father and grandfather, has a son Charlie, who is associate head coach of the Colonials, and a daughter, Deanna. Deanna resides in Lancaster, N.Y. with her husband Mark and their children Paityn (7), Shane (5) and Eva (2).

LAST TIME OUT Pittsburgh, Pa. / A.J. Palumbo Center-Sophomore Artemis Spanou recorded her fifth double-double of the season but it wasn’t enough for the Robert Morris University women’s basketball team to overcome cross-town rival Duquesne in a 66-63 setback at the A.J. Palumbo Center Saturday afternoon. Spanou had 18 points and tallied 14 rebounds for a Colonials team that fell to 8-4 on the season. The Dukes improve to 12-2 with the win. Spanou added four assists and had two blocks while going 6-of-13 from the field. Senior Mary Durojaye narrowly missed out on her fifth double-double finishing with 14 points and nine caroms. Junior April Williams had a season-high 17 points canning three of her seven three-pointers while junior Briannica Tye chipped in with 12 points and six assists. Duquesne’s Wumi Agunbiade led all scorers with 25 points and added 10 rebounds. She got help from Vanessa Abel and Carly Vendemia who each had 11 points. The squads traded blows over the first eight minutes of the second half as Duquesne continued to hold on to its fourpoint halftime cushion. Five straight points from Durojaye gave the Colonials their first lead since the first half, 51-50, as she knocked down one of two charity shots. Duquesne came right back, however, getting an old-fashioned three-point play and a turn-around jumper by Agunbiade to put the Dukes back up four points with just over eight minutes to play. The Dukes pushed the lead to as many as six points down the stretch. With 1:42 remaining, Spanou connected on a three-pointer to make the score 62-59. One freebie by Abel pushed the margin back to four points before a Durojaye lay-in on a Tye assist made it a two-point game with 42 seconds showing. Three consecutive charity shots by Abel made it a five-point game before a Spanou lay-up with 13 seconds left cut the lead to three points, 66-63. RMU got a steal on the following inbounds play, but were unable to get a shot off on the final possession as Alex Gensler came away with a steal on a pass at the left wing. The Colonials came out hot drilling their first three shots to take an 8-0 lead as Williams and Spanou hit treys and Tye knocked down a 15-footer. The Dukes came back with the next six points to cut the lead to two points four minutes into the game. The back-and-forth battle continued as RMU got back-to-back three-pointers from Tye and Williams to push the score to 14-6 just over five minutes into the game. A 9-0 run by the Dukes was capped by a reverse lay-in from Vendemia that put the host squad ahead for the first time, 15-14. After the Colonials regained a two-point lead, the Dukes surged ahead with a 10-0 run featuring five points from Vendemia that left the score, 27-19. Robert Morris stiffened the defense and held Duquesne without a field goal for the next three minutes, cutting the lead to three points with four points from Spanou. The teams would trade field goals over the last four minutes and Duquesne went into the break holding a four-point, 36-32, lead.

EIGHT BY THE NEW YEAR The Colonials eight wins prior to Christmas are a team record, and, in fact, would be a record for wins before New Year’s Day. With a win Saturday at Duquesne, RMU would have nine wins before the turn of the year, breaking the previous record of seven. The 2006-07 team sat at 7-3 before breaking out the new calendars. OUTSHOT & OUTREBOUNDED Robert Morris has been outshot and outrebounded just twice this season, both times against the same opponent and both times it ended with an RMU loss. The Colonials are 8-2 when outshooting or outrebounding their opponent. 20 FOR TWO Sophomore Artemis Spanou and junior Briannica Tye became the first Robert Morris duo to both score 20 points in the same game since Feb. 7, 2009. Spanou tied her season-high with 24 points, going 10-18 from the field, while Tye buried 10-of-14 free throws to tally 22 points for the Colonials. During the 2008-09 season, Sade Logan scored 23 points against Central Connecticut State and Kendra Williams added 22. CHUCK’S CHARMS The Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. “The Chuck”, has lent a certain advantage for the Colonials over the past nine seasons. Since 2004-05, Robert Morris is 84-19 (.816) in home games, including an even more impressive .846 (55-10) winning percentage in home NEC games.

GLASS-TASTIC The Colonials have been outrebounded just once this season, grabbing an average of 5.3 more rebounds per game than their opposition. In the last national statistics report, RMU was 26th nationally in rebounding margin. PUSHING THE PACE The Colonials are averaging 10.3 fast break points per game and have allowed opponents just an average of 3.8 fast break points per contest. ARTEMIS - GREEK GODDESS OF THE HARDWOOD Sophomore Artemis Spanou was named to the preseason All-NEC team and has lived up to the billing picking up two double-doubles so far this season. Last season, she was tied for first in the conference to Sacred Heart’s Callan Taylor in double-doubles with 12. As a rookie, a double-double in conference games at 13.7 points per game and 10.6 rebounds. In Greek mythology, Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. She is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, childbirth and young girls. WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS? The “Financier of the American Revolution.” He isn’t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies’ bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded.
ROBERT MORRIS FACTS Birthplace Liverpool, England Date of Birth Jan. 20, 1734 Death May 8, 1806 Occupation Importer / Exporter Superintendent of Finance Senator
Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.
