SAL BUSCAGLIA HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON AT RMU

The 2011-12 Robert Morris University women’s basketball team is led by 32year veteran head coach Sal Buscaglia. Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, is entering his eighth season at the helm and has turned the Colonials into not only a Northeast Conference contender, but a nationally competitive program in his short time at Robert Morris. Four short years after inheriting a program that went 1-26 before his arrival, Buscaglia put the Colonials into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after winning the Northeast Conference Tournament in 2007. One season later, and with just three returning letterwinners, Buscaglia pulled the feat off again. Robert Morris returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 after winning the NEC Regular Season and NEC Tournament Championships for the second straight season. RMU captured its fifth straight 20win season, posting a record of 23-10, while playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. Through December 31, 2007, the Colonials had played the 59th-toughest schedule in Division I. In 2009-10, his Robert Morris squad set team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (17) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. The Colonials finished the season 23-9 while picking up a wealth of individual awards. Coach Sal was named the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year for the second time. Under his tutelage, Angela Pace became the first player in conference history to earn both the NEC Player of the Year award and NEC Defensive Player of the Year. Pace’s award marked the thirdtime a Buscaglia player earned the conference’s top individual award. Buscaglia showed imagination and innovation in 2007-08 on the offensive side of the ball, installing a dribble-drive motion offense to take advantage of RMU’s athletic guards. One of just two teams in women’s basketball running that style offense, the Colonials finished 23rd in the nation averaging 73.0 points per game, finished 39th in scoring margin (9.8), finished second in three-point percentage (39.6 percent) and were 29th in field goal percentage (44.3 percent). Coach Sal also turned former guard Sade Logan into one of the nation’s top scorers and the premier three-point shooter in Division I. Logan earned NEC Player of the Year honors, the second Buscaglia recruit to earn the award, while powering one of the top offenses in the nation. She tied the NCAA record for three pointers with 126 and averaged 24.7 points per contest. The 2006-07 Robert Morris squad won their first NEC Tournament since 1991 while putting together a record of 24-8. The Colonials tied for the regularseason conference title with a 15-3 record, then pushed their way into March Madness with a 68-66 win over Sacred Heart in the title game. Buscaglia has now led his teams to 13 national tournament appearances and only two losing seasons. The Colonials have finished with 20 wins in five of the last six seasons, including a 23-9 mark in 2009-10. His team’s 20-10 mark in 2004-05 with his first recruiting class improved upon a 3-24 record the season before, marking the third largest turnaround in the nation in one season. Along the way, Buscaglia tallied his 600th career head coaching victory and currently boosts an overall coaching record of 613-278. Buscaglia’s teams own five of the seven 20win seasons and are the only squads to win 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons since the program’s inception in 1977. Despite not having the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Sugiery Monsac, for almost the entire season due to an injury, Coach Sal led the Colonials to the conference semifinals in 2005-06, one year after making it to the conference championship. The Colonials earned victories over Horizon League teams Youngstown State, Loyola (Ill.) and

Cleveland State, along with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Norfolk State. The Colonials also made it to the championship game in the Best Western Roundball Classic before falling to Big East opponent and tournament host South Florida, a 2006 NCAA Tournament team. During the 2004-05 season, the Colonials posted victories over Mid-American teams Akron and Marshall, along with Atlantic-10 member and cross-town rival Duquesne. In addition, Robert Morris beat St. Francis (Pa.), Mount St. Mary’s, and Monmouth. Prior to his arrival the team had 16, 15, and 13game losing streaks, respectively, against those teams. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College (1998-2003). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 17-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was recognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. In five seasons at Manhattan, Buscaglia compiled a record of 7965, including a 20-10 record and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 2002-03. Buscaglia’s Manhattan team received votes in the Top 25 in 2002-03 as the Jaspers claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The MAAC championship in 2003 was the first league title in school history. Manhattan’s 20-10 overall record was also the best in school history. In 2001-02 he guided the jaspers to an 18-10 overall record and was named the Co-Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For eight seasons prior to his arrival at Manhattan, Buscaglia was head coach of the University at Buffalo from 1990-98 and led the Bulls to five 20-win campaigns. In its first season in Division I competition in 1991-92, Buffalo finished with a 23-6 record, which was the 10th highest winning percentage (.793) in Division I that season. The Bulls won East Coast Conference regular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tournament championships in 1992 and 1994. In 1994-95, Buffalo moved to the Mid-Continent Conference and Buscaglia led the Bulls to a share of the Mid-Con regularseason title in 1995 and an appearance in the conference tournament finals in 1997. In each of Buffalo’s first three seasons in the Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1996. Buscaglia started his coaching career at Hilbert Junior College, in Hamburg, New York, where in 12 seasons from 1977-90 he amassed a record of 249-62. During his tenure at Hilbert, his teams collected 93 straight league wins, eight straight Region Tournament Championships (1982-90), eight straight regular season conference championships (1982-90) and eight straight National Tournament appearances (1982-90). In 1988-89 his team finished in the elite eight. Coach Sal is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia’s squad reached the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament eight straight seasons from 1982-83 to 1989-90, with the 1889-90 team reaching the NJCAA National Tournament final six. He is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia also has coaching experience with USA Basketball, having served as an assistant coach at the 1992 Summer Olympic Festival and as a Trial Coach at the 1989 Summer Olympic Festival. From 1986-93, Buscaglia served as head western division coach of the Empire State Games, helping coach the top players in the state to numerous medals. Over his career, Buscaglia has won eight conference titles at the Division I level and has averaged over 19 victories per year. In his 20 years as a Division I head coach, Buscaglia has guided his teams to winning seasons in 11 of them. He also owns 14 Coach of the Year honors. A native of Buffalo, New York, Buscaglia is a 1976 graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and accounting and in 1989 earned a Master’s Degree in physical education, also from Canisius. In 1980, Buscaglia received a Master’s Degree in business education from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Buscaglia, a proud father and grandfather, has a son Charlie, who is associate head coach of the Colonials, and a daughter, Deanna. Deanna resides in Lancaster, N.Y. with her husband Mark and their children Paityn (7), Shane (5) and Eva (2).

LAST TIME OUT Bethlehem, Pa. / Stabler Arena -The Robert Morris University women’s basketball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end with a 68-54 loss at Lehigh Saturday afternoon. The Colonials went ice cold in the second half, shooting 19.5 percent over the final 20 minutes to suffer just their second loss of the season falling to 7-2. Lehigh evens its record at 6-6. Sophomore Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni (Greek National Team)) went 8-of-18 from the field, grabbing eight of her 12 rebounds on the offensive end of the floor. She added 19 points to earn her second consecutive double-double and the fourth of season. Spanou also had five steals, setting a new career high. Briannica Tye (Aurora, Ill. / West Aurora (Mineral Area)) was the only other RMU player in double-digits as she added 11 points. She was 5-of-20 from the floor and had five assists and four steals. The teams battled back-and-forth over the early portion of the contest. A three-pointer by April Williams (Bronx, N.Y. / Murry Bergtraum (Monroe College)) splashed a three-pointer just over the minutes into the game to give the Colonials 16-12 lead. Lehigh responded with a 9-2 run, taking the lead on a fastbreak layup by Becky Guman. A short jumper on the next possession by Sarah Williams gave Lehigh a three-point lead, 21-18, with just over nine minutes to play. A three-point play by Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey (British National Team)) tied the game at 25 when the team traded baskets over the next four minutes and RMU assumed a one-point lead, 29-28, when Tye hit a long-jumper. Williams drilled four free throws and the Mountain Hawks closed the half on a 12-6 run to carry a 41-34 lead at the break. Spanou cut the lead to four points rights off the second half whistle, but Kelly Peterson splashed back-to-back three-pointers to stretch the lead to a game-high 10 points for Lehigh. Both teams went cold over the next six minutes. The lead eventually ended up at nine points for the Mountain Hawks when Emily Gratch hit a free throw with 10:51 to play. The Colonials scored seven unanswered points on a three-pointer by Williams and a pair of driving lay-ins by Tye that cut the margin to two points, 51-49, with 8:54 left. However, another long drought by the Colonials allowed Lehigh to stretch the lead to 16 points as they finished the game on a 17-5 run and the only two field goals for MRU over the final minutes belonged to Spanou. Alexa Williams finished with 16 points for the Mountain Hawks despite hitting just two field goals. She went 12-14 from the charity stripe however and grabbed 11 rebounds to record a double-double. Emily Gratch tacked on 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Robert Morris shot just 19.5 percent (8-41) in the second half and were at 28.0 percent (21-75) overall. The Colonials connected on 6-of-33 three balls and went 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from the charity stripe. Contrast that to Lehigh who hit 27-of-32 (84.4 percent) of its free throws and shot just over 41 percent (19-46) for the game. Lehigh is the first team to outrebound RMU this season holding a 48-38 advantage

Prior to that game, the Colonials fewest turnovers of the season was 17. GLASS-TASTIC The Colonials have not been outrebounded this season, grabbing an average of 8.3 more rebounds per game than their opposition. In the last national statistics report, RMU was 26th nationally in rebounding margin. NOT VALUING THE BALL The Colonials have not valued the ball this season averaging 21.8 turnovers per game this season. CHUCK’S CONFERENCE CHARMS The Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. “The Chuck”, has become a formidable place for Northeast Conference opponents to visit. Dating back to the 2004-05 season, head coach Sal Buscaglia’s second season in Moon Township, RMU is 51-10 at home against league teams. The 2005-06 team won all nine of its conference home games. HOW MAY I ASSIST YOU? Junior Briannica Tye dished out nine assists in her Colonials debut. That total marks the highest single player assist total since former star Angela Pace (2008-10) dished out nine dimes in a 20-point win at Mount St. Mary’s on February 27, 2010. Tye leads the Northeast Conference in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. ARTEMIS - GREEK GODDESS OF THE HARDWOOD Sophomore Artemis Spanou was named to the preseason All-NEC team and has lived up to the billing picking up two double-doubles so far this season. Last season, she was tied for first in the conference to Sacred Heart’s Callan Taylor in double-doubles with 12. WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS? The “Financier of the American Revolution.” He isn’t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies’ bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded.

ROBERT MORRIS FACTS Birthplace Liverpool, England Date of Birth Jan. 20, 1734 Death May 8, 1806 Occupation Importer / Exporter Superintendent of Finance Senator

Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.
