SAL BUSCAGLIA HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON AT RMU
The 2011-12 Robert Morris University women’s basketball team is led by 32year veteran head coach Sal Buscaglia. Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, is entering his eighth season at the helm and has turned the Colonials into not only a Northeast Conference contender, but a nationally competitive program in his short time at Robert Morris. Four short years after inheriting a program that went 1-26 before his arrival, Buscaglia put the Colonials into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after winning the Northeast Conference Tournament in 2007. One season later, and with just three returning letterwinners, Buscaglia pulled the feat off again. Robert Morris returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 after winning the NEC Regular Season and NEC Tournament Championships for the second straight season. RMU captured its fifth straight 20win season, posting a record of 23-10, while playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. Through December 31, 2007, the Colonials had played the 59th-toughest schedule in Division I. In 2009-10, his Robert Morris squad set team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (17) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. The Colonials finished the season 23-9 while picking up a wealth of individual awards. Coach Sal was named the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year for the second time. Under his tutelage, Angela Pace became the first player in conference history to earn both the NEC Player of the Year award and NEC Defensive Player of the Year. Pace’s award marked the thirdtime a Buscaglia player earned the conference’s top individual award. Buscaglia showed imagination and innovation in 2007-08 on the offensive side of the ball, installing a dribble-drive motion offense to take advantage of RMU’s athletic guards. One of just two teams in women’s basketball running that style offense, the Colonials finished 23rd in the nation averaging 73.0 points per game, finished 39th in scoring margin (9.8), finished second in three-point percentage (39.6 percent) and were 29th in field goal percentage (44.3 percent). Coach Sal also turned former guard Sade Logan into one of the nation’s top scorers and the premier three-point shooter in Division I. Logan earned NEC Player of the Year honors, the second Buscaglia recruit to earn the award, while powering one of the top offenses in the nation. She tied the NCAA record for three pointers with 126 and averaged 24.7 points per contest. The 2006-07 Robert Morris squad won their first NEC Tournament since 1991 while putting together a record of 24-8. The Colonials tied for the regularseason conference title with a 15-3 record, then pushed their way into March Madness with a 68-66 win over Sacred Heart in the title game. Buscaglia has now led his teams to 13 national tournament appearances and only two losing seasons. The Colonials have finished with 20 wins in five of the last six seasons, including a 23-9 mark in 2009-10. His team’s 20-10 mark in 2004-05 with his first recruiting class improved upon a 3-24 record the season before, marking the third largest turnaround in the nation in one season. Along the way, Buscaglia tallied his 600th career head coaching victory and currently boosts an overall coaching record of 613-278. Buscaglia’s teams own five of the seven 20win seasons and are the only squads to win 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons since the program’s inception in 1977. Despite not having the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Sugiery Monsac, for almost the entire season due to an injury, Coach Sal led the Colonials to the conference semifinals in 2005-06, one year after making it to the conference championship. The Colonials earned victories over Horizon League teams Youngstown State, Loyola (Ill.) and
Cleveland State, along with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Norfolk State. The Colonials also made it to the championship game in the Best Western Roundball Classic before falling to Big East opponent and tournament host South Florida, a 2006 NCAA Tournament team. During the 2004-05 season, the Colonials posted victories over Mid-American teams Akron and Marshall, along with Atlantic-10 member and cross-town rival Duquesne. In addition, Robert Morris beat St. Francis (Pa.), Mount St. Mary’s, and Monmouth. Prior to his arrival the team had 16, 15, and 13game losing streaks, respectively, against those teams. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College (1998-2003). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 17-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was recognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. In five seasons at Manhattan, Buscaglia compiled a record of 7965, including a 20-10 record and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 2002-03. Buscaglia’s Manhattan team received votes in the Top 25 in 2002-03 as the Jaspers claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The MAAC championship in 2003 was the first league title in school history. Manhattan’s 20-10 overall record was also the best in school history. In 2001-02 he guided the jaspers to an 18-10 overall record and was named the Co-Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For eight seasons prior to his arrival at Manhattan, Buscaglia was head coach of the University at Buffalo from 1990-98 and led the Bulls to five 20-win campaigns. In its first season in Division I competition in 1991-92, Buffalo finished with a 23-6 record, which was the 10th highest winning percentage (.793) in Division I that season. The Bulls won East Coast Conference regular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tournament championships in 1992 and 1994. In 1994-95, Buffalo moved to the Mid-Continent Conference and Buscaglia led the Bulls to a share of the Mid-Con regularseason title in 1995 and an appearance in the conference tournament finals in 1997. In each of Buffalo’s first three seasons in the Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1996. Buscaglia started his coaching career at Hilbert Junior College, in Hamburg, New York, where in 12 seasons from 1977-90 he amassed a record of 249-62. During his tenure at Hilbert, his teams collected 93 straight league wins, eight straight Region Tournament Championships (1982-90), eight straight regular season conference championships (1982-90) and eight straight National Tournament appearances (1982-90). In 1988-89 his team finished in the elite eight. Coach Sal is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia’s squad reached the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament eight straight seasons from 1982-83 to 1989-90, with the 1889-90 team reaching the NJCAA National Tournament final six. He is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia also has coaching experience with USA Basketball, having served as an assistant coach at the 1992 Summer Olympic Festival and as a Trial Coach at the 1989 Summer Olympic Festival. From 1986-93, Buscaglia served as head western division coach of the Empire State Games, helping coach the top players in the state to numerous medals. Over his career, Buscaglia has won eight conference titles at the Division I level and has averaged over 19 victories per year. In his 20 years as a Division I head coach, Buscaglia has guided his teams to winning seasons in 11 of them. He also owns 14 Coach of the Year honors. A native of Buffalo, New York, Buscaglia is a 1976 graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and accounting and in 1989 earned a Master’s Degree in physical education, also from Canisius. In 1980, Buscaglia received a Master’s Degree in business education from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Buscaglia, a proud father and grandfather, has a son Charlie, who is associate head coach of the Colonials, and a daughter, Deanna. Deanna resides in Lancaster, N.Y. with her husband Mark and their children Paityn (7), Shane (5) and Eva (2).

LAST TIME OUT Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center-Robert Morris University women’s basketball head coach Sal Buscaglia’s decision to switch up his starting lineup against the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds (15-7, 4-6 NEC) paid off as the Colonials (11-10, 5-5 NEC) won their first home game since December 21 beating LIU 63-57. The only regular starters to remain in the line-up - senior forward Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey (British National Team)) and sophomore forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni (Greek National Team)) - contributed with career nights while a renewed energy sparked the rest of the squad as the Colonials played 11 players for the first time this season. Durojaye led the way for the Colonials with a career-high 29 points while going 11-of-19 from the field. The senior also buried 7-of-8 free throws and came up with six rebounds. Spanou contributed thirteen rebounds to the team’s effort while narrowly missing her eighth consecutive double-double with nine points. Entering the game seven rebounds shy of 500, Spanou became the second-fastest player in RMU history to reach the milestone doing it in 51 games. She is the 18th player to achieve the feat and joins senior teammate Mary Durojaye in the club. LIU Brooklyn improved upon their five-point halftime lead as they started the second half with a 9-2 run to push the margin to as many as 12 points, 46-34. The Colonials responded with an 18-3 stretch that not only erased the Blackbird lead but gave the Colonials their first lead of the half at 52-49 with six minutes remaining in the game. Within that run, RMU was inspired by what appeared to be a serious injury to Durojaye. In the lone senior’s short absence, junior guard Briannica Tye (Aurora, Ill. / West Aurora (Mineral Area)) carried the team scoring her first six points of the game. She finished the contest with 10 points. Five consecutive points by Marika Sprow briefly put the lead back in the hands of the Blackbirds. Durojaye, however, shook off her injury and returned to the floor to score four unanswered points and start a 9-0 run that lasted the final 3:07 of the game. The Colonials would win going away, 64-57, and snap a four-game home skid. With a revamped starting line-up, the Colonials opened up the scoring with a 6-0 run in the first 1:49 of the game, going three of four from the floor. Durojaye hit her first four shots and accounted for eight of the team’s first ten points as RMU jumped on top, 10-4. The Blackbirds answered with a 17-4 run of their own over the next 5:52. During that run, the Colonials converted only two of their nine shot attempts while LIU saw six different players score. The two teams would continue to trade baskets as LIU Brooklyn opened its largest lead of the half taking a nine-point edge with roughly eight minutes remaining in the half. A late surge by Robert Morris cut the Blackbird lead to five going into halftime with the score 37-32. Kiara Evans and She’tiarra Pledger each finished with 12 points to lead the Blackbirds. All 10 players who touched the floor scored for the visiting squad. Junior guard Josette Campbell (London, England / Notre Dame (NW Florida State)) had nine rebounds. She was one of six reserves that helped RMU hold a 22-15 edge in bench scoring.

The Colonials defeated Kent State, 78-44, and Central Michigan, 64-55, in back-to-back games in the seasonopening homestand. They then defeated Akron, 85-78, in their last home game before Christmas before succumbing to Miami (Ohio), 61-50. EIGHT BY THE NEW YEAR The Colonials eight wins prior to Christmas are a team record, and, in fact, is also a record for wins before New Year’s Day breaking the previous record of seven. The 2006-07 team sat at 7-3 before breaking out the new calendars. 20 FOR TWO Sophomore Artemis Spanou and junior Briannica Tye became the first Robert Morris duo to both score 20 points in the same game since Feb. 7, 2009. Spanou tied her season-high with 24 points, going 10-18 from the field, while Tye buried 10-of-14 free throws to tally 22 points for the Colonials. During the 2008-09 season, Sade Logan scored 23 points against Central Connecticut State and Kendra Williams added 22.
WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS? The “Financier of the American Revolution.” He isn’t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies’ bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded.
ROBERT MORRIS FACTS Birthplace Liverpool, England Date of Birth Jan. 20, 1734 Death May 8, 1806 Occupation Importer / Exporter Superintendent of Finance Senator
Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.

CHARLIE BUSCAGLIA A TOP MID-MAJOR ASSISTANT COACHES A recent column on collegeinsider.com by Jason Belzer listed RMU associate head coach Charlie Buscaglia ninth on a list of the “Top 25 Mid-Major Women’s College Basketball Assistants”. Buscaglia is ninth on a list that is topped by 24-year Kent State associate head coach Lori Bodnar. The Colonials beat the Golden Flashes by 34 points early this season. NON-CONFERENCE MARGIN OF VICTORY The 34-point margin of victory by Robert Morris against Kent State was the team’s biggest victory in a non-conference game since pounding Longwood, 96-62, on Dec. 28, 2006. MVP TIMES THREE Artemis Spanou spent her summer traveling around Europe collecting trophies. The sophomore was named the most valuable player at the 2011 FIBA U20 Women’s European Championships, the third time in her international career. She also earned MVP awards at the 2010 U18 Championships and the 2008 U16 Championships after leading Greece to a gold medal. Also this past summer, Spanou was named to the all-tournament team at the U18 European Championships. SEVEN CONSECUTIVE PLAYOFF BERTHS Robert Morris secured its seventh consecutive NEC playoff berth last season. The Colonials have made the playoffs every season since 200405 finishing no worse than sixth during that stretch. RMU has finished first in three of those seasons, earning the tournament’s top seed in 2010. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR PASSPORT The Colonials feature seven international players hailing from five different countries. Senior Mary Durojaye and junior Josette Campbell call London, England, home. Sophomores Artemis Spanou and Anna Kavasila are both from Greece while Romane Dessacs joins RMU from France and Rocio Medrano is originally from Mexico. SPREADING THE TALENT The Colonials 13 players represent a total of 11 different states or countries. England and Greece are the only countries that can boast being the home of more than one RMU player. Robert Morris features players from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Illinois, New York and Rhode Island.
