Top Story

After a sweep last weekend against Vermont, the Robert Morris University women’s hockey team will look to extend their winning streak past a season-high three games as they take to the road this week to face College Hockey America (CHA) foe Penn State. The Colonials’ offense exploded against the Catamounts, racking up 10 goals - the highest a RMU team has scored in a two-game series since Nov. 10-11, 2012 when they compiled 11 against Penn State. Forwards Maeve Garvey and Anissa Gamble tallied multi-goal games, and senior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno scored two power play goals on the weekend.

Series vs. Penn State

RMU is 4-0-0 against Penn State in their history, with all four of those victories coming in the 2012-13 season - the Nittany Lions’ first as a varsity program. The Colonials traveled to University Park, Pa. on Nov. 10-11, 2012 for their inaugural series with Penn State, and swept them in two games by the combined score of 11-2 (7-1, 4-1). Then-sophomore forward Rebecca Vint scored a program single-game high five goals in the opening contest and added a sixth in Game 2. RMU then welcomed the Nittany Lions to 84 Lumber Arena for Senior Day weekend, and earned their second sweep by a combined tally of 8-3 (4-1, 4-2). Vint scored twice more in that series and will carry a goals-per-game average of 2.00 going into this week’s set of games.

Scouting Penn State

Penn State comes into this week’s series with a record of 2-5-1, earning their two wins at Vermont and at home against Union. Sophomore forward Shannon Yoxheimer currently ranks tied for fourth in the CHA in points (8) and tied for sixth in assists (5), while classmate Celine Whitlinger is in the conference’s top five in save percentage (.935 - t-2nd), goals-against-average (2.52 - 4th), and saves (144 - 5th). The Nittany Lions finished last season - their first as a Division I program - with a mark of 7-26-2, and 1-17-2 in CHA play.

2013-14 season info Last Time Out The Colonials extended their winning streak to three games - which matches a season-high for consecutive wins - as they swept Vermont this past weekend.

RMU edged out the Catamounts on Friday night, 4-3. Freshman forward Maeve Garvey registered the first multi-goal game for the Colonials on the season, while classmate Jessica Dodds earned her second-straight start between the pipes.

Senior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno led off the scoring at the 9:08 mark of the first period with a strike off the power play. Garvey would then extend the lead to 2-0 after deflecting a shot from senior defenseman Kylie St. Louis, but Vermont pulled within one after Kellie Dineen beat Dodds to end the freshman’s shutout streak at 143:28.

Garvey added her second goal after batting in a rebound off a shot from senior defenseman Anneline Lauziere. Junior forward Rebecca Vint then beat the Catamount goaltender to make it 4-1, which gave the Colonials enough of a cushion to keep the lead despite two more goals by Vermont.

Sophomore forward Anissa Gamble’s two goals in Saturday’s contest helped give RMU the series sweep with a 6-4 victory.

The Colonials would strike first for the third straight game as junior Katelyn Scott lit the lamp for her first goal of the season. However, the Catamounts would storm back with two goals to take their first lead of the series.

Imbrogno evened it up with her second power play goal in as many games, then Vint tallied a score to give RMU a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Gamble made it 4-2 with the first goal of her career, but Vermont pulled within one off a power play strike from Delia McNally. However, the Colonials quickly stretched the lead to two once again as freshman forward Brittany Howard deked two Catamount defenders before finding the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

Vermont would pull within one once more off another power play opportunity, but Gamble finished things off with her second career goal.

Dodds started both games and now is 5-0-0 on the year.

The Colontino Era In two seasons as head coach of the Robert Morris University women’s hockey team, Paul Colontino has compiled a record of 35-24-7, won both United States College Hockey National Coach of the Year and College Hockey American Coach of the Year awards, and led the Colonials to their first CHA Championship.

Last season, RMU won 15 games and advanced in the CHA Tournament for the fourth straight year. Among those victories were a two-game sweep of No. 4/5 Mercyhurst in December, and a thrilling triple-overtime win over Lindenwood in the first round of the CHA Tournament. The Colonials went 4-3-1 against nationally-ranked opponents on the year.

In 2011-12, Colontino led the Colonials to the largest year-to-year win improvement in Division I women’s hockey before guiding the squad to a storybook ending as RMU captured the program’s first-ever conference championship. He helped RMU break its program record for wins by the end of January and finished the season with 19 victories, an amazing 13-win improvement from the prior season. Despite being picked to finish last in the league after the loss of the program’s all-time leading scorer, RMU posted the highest-ever finish in league play under Colontino’s guidance, with the most CHA wins and points ever, and also reset school records for longest winning streak and longest unbeaten streak during the course of the season.

Colontino led the squad to one of the biggest regular-season wins in program history Jan. 21 when Robert Morris scored twice in the final three minutes to defeat conference powerhouse Mercyhurst for the first time ever. The victory not only ended the Lakers’ 28-game conference unbeaten streak, but it would serve as a harbinger of things to come for the Colonials.

Robert Morris’ success occurred due to dramatic improvements on both ends of the ice. RMU broke the single-season school records for both overall goals and goals per game as it averaged over one goal per game more than last season. The Colonials’ progress on the defensive end was even more evident as RMU was one of eight squads nationally to allow fewer than two goals per game as Robert Morris allowed approximately 1.90 goals per game fewer than it conceded during the 2010-11 season.

Colontino also guided a couple of Colonials to have noteworthy individual seasons as junior Kristen DiCiocco claimed the CHA Regular-Season Goaltending Trophy and freshman Rebecca Vint was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Year.

Under the Spotlight

The Colonials earned votes in both the United States Collge Hockey Online (USCHO) and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey polls this week, marking the first time in program history that RMU has been recognized in both national rankings.

The Colonials received two votes in the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey Poll, and one in the USCHO.com Poll.

The first time that RMU gained votes in a national poll this season was on Oct. 1, when they picked up two in the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey Poll after their 6-2 exhibition victory over the Toronto Junior Aeros.

The last time that the Colonials were recognized in the USCHO national rankings was in March 2012. RMU earned recognition that season after upsetting No. 6 Mercyhurst in the CHA Championship Game.

The Colonials were one of five teams to gain mention in the ‘receiving votes’ category of the USCHO.com Poll. Minnesota-Duluth, earlier opponent Boston University, New Hampshire, and November opponent Syracuse were also recognized. In the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey Poll, RMU joined those four aforementioned teams and Ohio State in the ‘receiving votes’ section.

Looking Back

Robert Morris has played once on Halloween and once on Nov. 1 in their history.

The Colonials will look to erase the ghosts of Halloween 2008 this Thursday. RMU dropped their only game that they’ve played on Oct. 31 to future CHA opponent RIT, 2-1.

After the Tigers took an early 1-0 lead on the power play, the Colonials tied it with a goal from Jordan Riley. Alissa Dorman was credited with the assist.

However, RIT would win it with another power play chance in the third period. Daneca Butterfield made 15 saves on the contest.

RMU defeated Cornell the day after, 2-1, for their only win on Nov. 1.

The Big Red took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the first period, but the Colonials tied it three minutes later with a goal from Brianna Delaney. Delaney later scored the decider in the second period on the power play off passes from Kristen Miles and Samantha Ullrich.

Brianne McLaughlin made 37 saves as RMU moved to 4-4-0 on the season.

Playing Professionally

Former Colonial goaltender Delayne Brian was drafted by the Calgary Inferno (formerly Team Alberta) in the second round of the Canadian

Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) Draft on August 26th, becoming the first RMU player to be picked since United States Olympic netminder Brianne McLaughlin was selected by the Burlington Barracudas with the 24th overall selection in the 2010 CWHL Draft.

“We’re excited that Delayne has the opportunity to continue her hockey career,” said Colonials head coach Paul Colontino. “To be drafted that high with the first pick in the second round is a great accomplishment, especially when many don’t have the chance to continue their playing career after college.”

Brian graduated this past May with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and was named to the 2012-13 College Hockey America All-Academic Team. In six games last season, Brian compiled a record of 2-2 and made 93 saves.

The newest member of the Flames started her collegiate career at Wayne State University, serving as the starting goaltender there. She wsa named CHA Goaltender of the Week six times, Goaltender of the Month three times, and Defensive Player of the Week three times.

“Delayne will give us a great one-two punch in goal,” Calgary head coach Tim Bothwell said in a release. “She led her teams to championships before playing four years at the Division 1 level, and also has international experience in the Canadian Under 18 program. She is a welcome addition.”

Brian and the Flames open up the regular season on Nov. 9 as they travel to Toronto to take on the Furies.

Twice as Nice After going six games without a player registering a multi-goal game, the Colonials saw two players accomplish the feat against Vermont.

Freshman forward Maeve Garvey scored twice in the 4-3 victory over the Catamounts on Friday. Garvey first deflected a shot from senior defenseman Kylie St. Louis, then batted in a rebound from senior defenseman Anneline Lauziere.

It didn’t take long for RMU to have a second player compile multiple goals in a game. Sophomore forward Anissa Gamble did it in Saturday’s 6-4 win, scoring in the second and third periods to pick up the first two goals of her career.

Studious Student-Athletes

Junior forward Katelyn Scott was one of a conference-best 11 student-athletes named CHA Student-Athletes of the Year, and the Colonials earned a conference-best 21 selections on the 2012-13 College Hockey America Academic Team.

Scott, an engineering major, posted a perfect cumulative GPA of 4.0 during the 2012-13 school year. To qualify for the CHA All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must post a 3.0 GPA or higher during the 2012-13 academic year.

Four RMU student-athletes made the CHA All-Academic Team as double majors, including last year’s assistant captain Cobina Delaney. Delaney, who was nominated for the 2013 BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award, posted a 3.80 GPA majoring in both marketing and management.

Storming Out of the Gates

A start of 6-2-0 means this is the third straight season in which the Colonials com-

piled a winning record in their first eight games.

RMU’s best start through eight games came in the 2011-12 CHA Championship year, as the Colonials began that campaign 6-1-1. RMU started with victories in their first three games before dropping the final game of a series to Minnesota State. The Colonials bounced back with a sweep at RPI and took a two-game set with St. Cloud State with a win and a tie.

RMU ended up winning four more games following the series with the Huskies, compiling a record of 10-1-1 before falling at Quinnipiac in the Nutmeg Classic, 3-2.

The Colonials also have gotten off to quick starts the past two seasons in CHA play, compiling a 3-0-1 mark in those four games. RMU swept Penn State last year at University Park, Pa., and earned a win and tie at home against Syracuse in 2011-12.

Robert Morris Quick Facts

Honorable Howard

Freshman forward Brittany Howard has only been in a Robert Morris uniform for a

month now, but she’s already making her name known around the national women’s college hockey scene.

With her five-point weekend against Vermont, Howard won her second CHA Rookie of the Week award of the season. The forward won her first two weeks earlier after registering three points in a sweep of Bemidji State.

Howard leads the CHA in assists (9) and is second in points (12). She ranks tied for first and tied for sixth in those categories, respectively.

She’s the first Colonial to win two Rookie of the Week awards since Rebecca Vint did it in 2011-12. Vint was honored six times during the season, which tied Thea Imbrogno’s mark for most in school history.

Fresh Faces

RMU adds eight freshmen (five forwards, two goaltenders, one defenseman) to the

roster this season. Jessica Dodds is a goaltender from London, Ontario, and arrives in the Keystone State with her London Jr. Devilette teammate Tia Kipfer, who is a forward from Stratford. Forwards Brittany Howard out of St. Thomas, Ontario, and Maeve Garvey from Oakville, Ontario, also come over as teammates from the Burlington Jr. Barracudas.

Defenseman Mikaela Lowater of Thornhill and forward Mackenzie Johnston of Barrie give the Colonials six newcomers from Ontario. Forward Rikki Meilleur arrives from St. Adolphe, Manitoba, and goaltender Carley Catherine comes from Bloomington, Ill. The eight newcomers make up the largest incoming class since the 2009-10 season.

Noteworthy Newcomers

Robert Morris head coach Paul Colontino welcomes two newcomers to his coaching

staff for the 2013-14 season.

Joining as an assistant coach is Jinelle Siergiej. This is the former Olympian’s first collegiate coaching job, as she’s served as the head coach of the Arrowhead Union High School girls hockey team over the past three seasons.

Siergiej won four silver medals (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010) in the Four Nations Cup as a member of Team USA, and captured silver medals in the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Women’s Championship and in the 2010 Olympic Games. Siergiej officially retired from international competition in 2011.

A 2008 graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Siergiej (then known as Jinelle Zaugg) helped lead the Badgers to back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007.

Jocey Kleiber also joins the staff as the new Director of Hockey Operations. She graduated from Niagara in 2012.

Record Watch

Senior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno ranks in the career top five in Robert Morris program history for points, goals and assists. Eight games into 2013-14 season, Imbrogno ranks third in career points and second in career assists. Imbrogno also ranks fourth in career goals scored with 43. If she finishes the year similar to her previous three season, then she could end up threatening at the top marks in all of those categories.

Imbrogno also holds spots in the same categories for single season performance. She worked her way into the single-season record books after an impressive sophomore campaign. Imrbrogno ranks second in single-season points, tied for fourth in single-season goals scored and second in single-season assists.

Junior forward Rebecca Vint reset the single-season record book last season as a freshman, and added onto that with a successful sophomore campaign. Eight games into the 2013-14 season, Vint ranks fourth in career points and fifth in career goals and assists. She also holds the program’s single-season records in points, goals, and assists, and cracked the top five in points (third) and goals (tied for fourth) after her second season.

Triple Overtime Thriller

In last season’s College Hockey America tournament, the Robert Morris Colonials earned a thrilling triple-overtime 2-1 victory over Lindenwood in the first game of a three-game series. The 108 minute contest set a new program record for the longest game played, and it was also the first triple overtime game that RMU has ever played in.

Lindenwood struck first with a goal in the second period, and it seemed like the Lions would come out with the win through the first few minutes of the third period. But less than five minutes into the third period, Maddie Collias batted in a rebound from Kristen Richards to knot the game at one a piece.

That would be the last time either team scored for the next 63 minutes, as both defenses held strong through the remainder of the third period and during the first two overtimes. Eight minutes into the third overtime, Brandi Delaney buried a pass from Rebecca Vint on the power play to give the Colonials a much-needed victory.

RMU also shattered the program record for most shots on goal in a single game. The previous record of 63 was improved upon by 29, as the Colonials fired 92 shots at the Lindenwood netminder Nicole Hensley.

Hensley would break the NCAA record for most saves in a single contest with 90.

Paul Colontino Head Coach Third Season Mercyhurst ‘00 Paul Colontino has raised the bar since taking the head coaching job at Robert Morris, compiling a record of 35-24-7 in his two seasons with the Colonials. Under Colontino’s watch, RMU has finished with their best two single-season records in program history. No previous team had won more than 12 games before 2011-12.

In Colontino’s first season, he led the Colonials to the largest yearto-year win improvement in Division I women’s hockey. Colontino guided the squad to a storybook ending as RMU captured the program’s first-ever conference championship. His turn-around of the RMU program earned him USCHO (U.S. College Hockey Online) National Coach of the Year accolades.

Colontino led Robert Morris women’s hockey to unprecedented heights. He helped RMU break its program record for wins by the end of January and finished the season with 19 victories, an amazing 13-win improvement from the prior season. Despite being picked to finish last in the league after the loss of the program’s all-time leading scorer, RMU posted the highest-ever finish in league play under Colontino’s guidance, with the most CHA wins and points ever, and also reset school records for longest winning streak and longest unbeaten streak during the course of the season.

Colontino, who previously had claimed CHA Coach of the Year honors, led the squad to one of the biggest regular-season wins in program history Jan. 21 when Robert Morris scored twice in the final three minutes to defeat conference powerhouse Mercyhurst for the first time ever.

The victory not only ended the Lakers’ 28-game conference unbeaten streak, but it would serve as a harbinger of things to come for the Colonials.

RMU entered the 2012 CHA Tournament as the second seed, but with top-seeded Mercyhurst having won nine straight tournament titles, the Lakers were clearly still the team to beat.

After dispatching of Niagara in the semifinals, Robert Morris and Mercyhurst met with the championship on the line. The Colonials opened up a two-goal lead within the first 12 minutes and never let Mercyhurst pull even as RMU held on for a 3-2 win to dethrone the long time CHA champions.

Robert Morris’ success occurred due to dramatic improvements on both ends of the ice. RMU broke the single-season school records for both overall goals and goals per game as it averaged over one goal per game more than last season. The Colonials’ progress on the defensive end was even more evident as RMU was one of eight squads nationally to allow fewer than two goals per game as Robert Morris allowed approximately 1.90 goals per game fewer than it conceded during the 2010-11 season.

Before coming to Robert Morris, Colontino had served as associate head coach at Mercyhurst since 2006. At Mercyhurst he helped guide teams to the NCAA Tournament in each of his five years, including earning two Frozen Four berths, and has over a decade of women’s hockey coaching experience at the Division I level.

In Colontino’s five seasons with Mercyhurst, the Lakers posted an overall record of 148-25-9 (.838), advanced to the national championship game once, made two Frozen Four appearances, qualified for the NCAA Tournament five times, were ranked No. 1 nationally in each season and won five College Hockey America (CHA) tournament championships and five regular-season titles. Immediately after Colontino returned to Mercyhurst as associate head coach, the Lakers went 32-2-3 in 2006-07, claiming the program record for victories, as they registered a ninewin improvement from the previous season and were ranked No. 1 nationally for 13 weeks.

After a one-goal loss in the NCAA Tournament to the eventual national champions ended the Lakers’ 2007-08 season, the 2008-09 squad reached new heights. Entering the NCAA Tournament on a 15-game winning streak, Mercyhurst advanced to its first-ever Frozen Four with a victory over St. Lawrence and proceeded to top Minnesota in a thrilling semifinal contest to move into the national championship game against Wisconsin. The Lakers were ranked No. 1 for 23 weeks the following season, went 30-3-3 and advanced to the Frozen Four for the second straight season before succumbing in overtime to Cornell.
