Top Story

Fresh off a series split with then-No. 7/8 Boston University, the Colonials will look to win their last home series of the month as they take on Vermont. RMU fell to the Terriers in Friday’s contest despite outshooting them 36-28 and winning 31 of 53 faceoffs. Boston jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but goals from seniorsThea Imbrogno and Anneline Lauziere brought the Colonials back even with the nationally-ranked Terriers. Boston would find the back of the net three more times to set the final at 5-2, but RMU would get their revenge in Saturday’s contest. Freshman goaltender Jessica Dodds earned her second shutout in as many starts and goals from sophomore Ashley Vesci, freshman Maeve Garvey, and senior Kylie St. Louis help give the Colonials a 3-0 victory. Dodds made 21 saves on the afternoon and Vesci’s goal in the first period was the first of her career.

Series vs. Boston University

RMU is 4-1-0 against Vermont all-time. The Colonials swept the Catamounts in a two-game road set last season by the scores of 6-2 and 3-2. Now-senior captain Kristen Richards tallied four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in the two games to lead the team. RMU also defeated Vermont on Nov. 18, 2006 behind a 21 save shutout from Brianne McLaughin. The Colonials split a two-game series with the Catamounts in the 2005-06 season.

Scouting Boston University

Vermont comes into this weekend’s series with a record of 2-2-1. The Catamounts have compiled a record of 1-2-1 against two of RMU’s College Hockey America (CHA) opponents this season (Penn State, RIT) and also beat RPI last weekend. In the Catamounts’ 3-1 victory over the Engineers, freshman goaltender Madison Litchfield was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week after making 29 saves in the contest. Junior forward Amanda Pelkey is currently second in Hockey East in scoring with an average of 1.60 points per game (3 goals, 5 assists).

2013-14 season info Last Time Out The Colonials picked up a split with No. 7/8 Boston University this past weekend and notched their first win against a nationally-ranked foe since Feb. 8, 2013 when RMU defeated rival No. 7 Mercyhurst, 4-2.

Despite outshooting the Terriers, RMU started off on the wrong foot in the series as they dropped the opener, 5-2. Boston would take an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Sarah Steele and Louise Warren, but RMU would fight back in the second period and tie it with two goals of their own.

Senior forward Thea Imbrogno batted in a rebound from junior forward Rebecca Vint to bring the Colonials within one, then senior defenseman Anneline Lauziere threw a knuckle-puck at the net and it trickled through to tie the game.

Boston would fire back with three unanswered goals to set the final score. However, in addition to outshooting the Terriers, RMU would also hold an advantage in faceoffs as they won 31 of 53 of them.

The Colonials would bounce back on Saturday and take the second game of the series, 3-0. Freshman goaltender Jessica Dodds would get the start between the pipes and was fantastic once again, stopping 21 shots en route to her second-straight shutout - the first a RMU goaltender has accomplished the feat.

At the 10:08 mark of the first period, sophomore forward Ashley Vesci would break through for the first goal of the game and the first of her career. Vesci gathered a pass from junior foward Katie Fergus and the local Pittsburgh product would beat Boston goaltender Victoria Hanson.

Freshman forward Maeve Garvey then lit the lamp on a power play to make it 2-0. Fellow freshman Brittany Howard put the inital shot on net and the rebound trickled right to Garvey. Garvey would then bat in the second chance for her second goal of the season.

Senior defenseman Kylie St. Louis picked up her second goal of the season with 42 seconds left in the contest, as she found the back of an empty net to set the final tally.

The Colontino Era In two seasons as head coach of the Robert Morris University women’s hockey team, Paul Colontino has compiled a record of 35-24-7, won both United States College Hockey National Coach of the Year and College Hockey American Coach of the Year awards, and led the Colonials to their first CHA Championship.

Last season, RMU won 15 games and advanced in the CHA Tournament for the fourth straight year. Among those victories were a two-game sweep of No. 4/5 Mercyhurst in December, and a thrilling triple-overtime win over Lindenwood in the first round of the CHA Tournament. The Colonials went 4-3-1 against nationally-ranked opponents on the year.

In 2011-12, Colontino led the Colonials to the largest year-to-year win improvement in Division I women’s hockey before guiding the squad to a storybook ending as RMU captured the program’s first-ever conference championship. He helped RMU break its program record for wins by the end of January and finished the season with 19 victories, an amazing 13-win improvement from the prior season. Despite being picked to finish last in the league after the loss of the program’s all-time leading scorer, RMU posted the highest-ever finish in league play under Colontino’s guidance, with the most CHA wins and points ever, and also reset school records for longest winning streak and longest unbeaten streak during the course of the season.

Colontino led the squad to one of the biggest regular-season wins in program history Jan. 21 when Robert Morris scored twice in the final three minutes to defeat conference powerhouse Mercyhurst for the first time ever. The victory not only ended the Lakers’ 28-game conference unbeaten streak, but it would serve as a harbinger of things to come for the Colonials.

Robert Morris’ success occurred due to dramatic improvements on both ends of the ice. RMU broke the single-season school records for both overall goals and goals per game as it averaged over one goal per game more than last season. The Colonials’ progress on the defensive end was even more evident as RMU was one of eight squads nationally to allow fewer than two goals per game as Robert Morris allowed approximately 1.90 goals per game fewer than it conceded during the 2010-11 season.

Colontino also guided a couple of Colonials to have noteworthy individual seasons as junior Kristen DiCiocco claimed the CHA Regular-Season Goaltending Trophy and freshman Rebecca Vint was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Year.

Preseason Rankings The Colonials were chosen to finish third in the CHA this season, according to a preseason poll voted on by the conference’s head coaches. Despite the ranking, RMU was the only team besides preseason favorite Mercyhurst to receive a first-place vote. This marks just the second season the program has earned a first-place vote; the first coming last season when the Colonials received two first-place votes as the conference’s defending champion.

Sandwiched in between Mercyhurst and RMU is Syracuse. Behind the Orange and the Colonials are RIT, Lindenwood, and Penn State.

Looking Back

The Colonials have played three times on the 25th and 26th of October in its program’s history.

On Oct. 25, 2008, RMU were defeated by the No. 9 St. Lawrence Saints, 5-0. Brianne McLaughin registered 35 saves and back-up goaltender Daneca Butterfield gloved 10 shot attempts while she was in the game.

On Oct. 26, 2007, the Colonials fell to St. Cloud State at home, 3-1. RMU would get on the board first thanks to a goal from Sara O’Malley - her first of her career - but couldn’t produce much offense after that. McLaughlin stopped 26 shots on the contest.

Last season, on Oct. 26, 2012, the Colonials skated to a 3-3 tie with No. 7 Northeastern. Kelsey Thomas tallied a hat trick on the contest, scoring goals in each of the regulation periods. Kristen DiCiocco made 36 saves in the game.

Playing Professionally

Former Colonial goaltender Delayne Brian was drafted by the Calgary Inferno (formerly Team Alberta) in the second round of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) Draft on August 26th, becoming the first RMU player to be picked since United States Olympic netminder Brianne McLaughlin was selected by the Burlington Barracudas with the 24th overall selection in the 2010 CWHL Draft.

“We’re excited that Delayne has the opportunity to continue her hockey career,” said Colonials head coach Paul Colontino. “To be drafted that high with the first pick in the second round is a great accomplishment, especially when many don’t have the chance to continue their playing career after college.”

Brian graduated this past May with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and was named to the 2012-13 College Hockey America All-Academic Team. In six games last season, Brian compiled a record of 2-2 and made 93 saves.

The newest member of the Flames started her collegiate career at Wayne State University, serving as the starting goaltender there. She wsa named CHA Goaltender of the Week six times, Goaltender of the Month three times, and Defensive Player of the Week three times.

“Delayne will give us a great one-two punch in goal,” Calgary head coach Tim Bothwell said in a release. “She led her teams to championships before playing four years at the Division 1 level, and also has international experience in the Canadian Under 18 program. She is a welcome addition.”

Brian and the Flames open up the regular season on Nov. 9 as they travel to Toronto to take on the Furies.

Under The Spotlight

The Colonials gained recognition in the Oct. 1 release of the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey Poll, as they received two votes.

This marked the first time since January 2012 that the Colonials have earned votes in a national poll. RMU received recognition that season from the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) national rankings after splitting a road series with Providence on Jan. 6-7. The Colonials rode the momentum from that series and finished 7-4-2 in their last 13 games, headlined by an upset victory over No. 6 Mercyhurst in the College Hockey America Championship Game.

RMU was one of our schools that earned a mention in the ‘receiving votes’ category, which included the likes of Northeastern, St. Lawrence, and Providence. The Colonials host the Saints on the first weekend of 2014 on Jan. 4-5.

In addition to the January home series with St. Lawrence, RMU will play two of the teams who are currently in the top 10 of the rankings. The Colonials host No. 7 Boston University this weekend, and run into No. 9 Mercyhurst for the first time on Nov. 8-9.

Studious Student-Athletes

Junior forward Katelyn Scott was one of a conference-best 11 student-athletes named CHA Student-Athletes of the Year, and the Colonials earned a

conference-best 21 selections on the 2012-13 College Hockey America Academic Team.

Scott, an engineering major, posted a perfect cumulative GPA of 4.0 during the 2012-13 school year. To qualify for the CHA All-Academic Team, a studentathlete must post a 3.0 GPA or higher during the 2012-13 academic year.

Four RMU student-athletes made the CHA All-Academic Team as double majors, including last year’s assistant captain Cobina Delaney. Delaney, who was nominated for the 2013 BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award, posted a 3.80 GPA majoring in both marketing and management.

Fantastic Freshman

After winning CHA co-Goaltender of the Week last week, freshman netminder Jessica Dodds took home CHA Rookie of the Week for her efforts against No. 7/8 Boston University.

Dodds made her third start of the season in Saturday’s contest and blanked the nationallyranked Terrier offensive attack, as she made 21 saves en route to a 3-0 victory. In the second period, the freshman stonewalled a breakaway opportunity, helping preserve her shutout.

Dodds became the second Colonial to win CHA Rookie of the Week, as forward Brittany Howard took home the honors last week. The netminder currently leads the CHA with a goals against average of 0.65 and a save percentage of .970.

Dodds also became the first RMU goaltender to win CHA Rookie of the Week since nowOlympic netminder Brianne McLaughlin won it on March 7, 2006.

With the shutout victory, Dodds became the first opposing goaltender to blank Boston at home since it happened Dec. 9, 2010 against Minnesota-Duluth.

Dodds has registered back-to-back shutouts, becoming the first Colonial netminder to do that in program history. The freshman currently holds a shutout streak of 124:04.

Schedule Notes

RMU travels to Penn State next week for their first CHA contests of 2013-14, as they play a two-game set with the Nittany Lions at their brand new home, Pegula Ice Arena. The two contests will be held on Thursday and Friday, rather than Friday and Saturday.

The Colonials return home the following weekend for two more conference series. The first of those will be against rival Mercyhurst, who RMU was 3-2 against last season. The Colonials will then take on Lindenwood in a rematch of a CHA Quarterfinal pairing that two games decided by a total of three goals, and a triple-overtime victory in Game 1.

RMU continues CHA play on the road with a series against Syracuse. The Colonials will then end the month of November with non-conference games at Ohio State and at home against Maine.

Fresh Faces

RMU adds eight freshmen (five forwards, two goaltenders, one defenseman) to the roster this season. Jessica Dodds is a goaltender from London, Ontario, and arrives in the Keystone State with her London Jr. Devilette teammate Tia Kipfer, who is a forward from Stratford. Forwards Brittany Howard out of St. Thomas, Ontario, and Maeve Garvey from Oakville, Ontario, also come over as teammates from the Burlington Jr. Barracudas. Defenseman Mikaela Lowater of Thornhill and forward Mackenzie Johnston of Barrie give the Colonials six newcomers from Ontario. Forward Rikki Meilleur arrives from St. Adolphe, Manitoba, and goaltender Carley Catherine comes from Bloomington, Ill. The eight newcomers make up the largest incoming class since the 2009-10 season.

Noteworthy Newcomers

Robert Morris head coach Paul Colontino welcomes two newcomers to his coaching staff for the 2013-14 season.

Joining as an assistant coach is Jinelle Siergiej. This is the former Olympian’s first collegiate coaching job, as she’s served as the head coach of the Arrowhead Union High School girls hockey team over the past three seasons.

Siergiej won four silver medals (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010) in the Four Nations Cup as a member of Team USA, and captured silver medals in the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Women’s Championship and in the 2010 Olympic Games. Siergiej officially retired from international competition in 2011.

A 2008 graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Siergiej (then known as Jinelle Zaugg) helped lead the Badgers to back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007.

Jocey Kleiber also joins the staff as the new Director of Hockey Operations. She graduated from Niagara in 2012.

Rewriting the Record Books

Senior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno ranks in the career top five in Robert Morris program history for points, goals and assists. Coming into the 2013-14 season, Imbrogno ranked third in career points and second in career assists. Imbrogno ranked fourth in career goals scored with 39. If she registers a season similar to her previous three, then she could end up threatening at the top marks in all of those categories.

Imbrogno also holds spots in the same categories for single season performance. She worked her way into the single-season record books after an impressive sophomore campaign. Imrbrogno ranks second in single-season points, tied for fourth in single-season goals scored and second in single-season assists.

Junior forward Rebecca Vint reset the single-season record book last season as a freshman, and added onto that with a successful sophomore campaign. Coming into the 2013-14 season, Vint ranks fourth in career points and fifth in career goals. She also holds the program’s single-season records in points, goals, and assists, and cracked the top five in points (third) and goals (tied for fourth) after her second season.

If Imbrogno breaks Brianna Delaney’s career marks in her senior campaign, Vint could topple them in her final season as a Colonial in 2014-15.

Triple Overtime Thriller

In last season’s College Hockey America tournament, the Robert Morris Colonials earned a thrilling triple-overtime 2-1 victory over Lindenwood in the first game of a three-game series. The 108 minute contest set a new program record for the longest game played, and it was also the first triple overtime game that RMU has ever played in.

Lindenwood struck first with a goal in the second period, and it seemed like the Lions would come out with the win through the first few minutes of the third period. But less than five minutes into the third period, Maddie Collias batted in a rebound from Kristen Richards to knot the game at one a piece.

That would be the last time either team scored for the next 63 minutes, as both defenses held strong through the remainder of the third period and during the first two overtimes. Eight minutes into the third overtime, Brandi Delaney buried a pass from Rebecca Vint on the power play to give the Colonials a much-needed victory.

RMU also shattered the program record for most shots on goal in a single game. The previous record of 63 was improved upon by 29, as the Colonials fired 92 shots at the Lindenwood netminder Nicole Hensley.

Hensley would break the NCAA record for most saves in a single contest with 90.

Paul Colontino Head Coach Third Season Mercyhurst ‘00 Paul Colontino has raised the bar since taking the head coaching job at Robert Morris, compiling a record of 35-24-7 in his two seasons with the Colonials. Under Colontino’s watch, RMU has finished with their best two single-season records in program history. No previous team had won more than 12 games before 2011-12.

In Colontino’s first season, he led the Colonials to the largest yearto-year win improvement in Division I women’s hockey. Colontino guided the squad to a storybook ending as RMU captured the program’s first-ever conference championship. His turn-around of the RMU program earned him USCHO (U.S. College Hockey Online) National Coach of the Year accolades.

Colontino led Robert Morris women’s hockey to unprecedented heights. He helped RMU break its program record for wins by the end of January and finished the season with 19 victories, an amazing 13-win improvement from the prior season. Despite being picked to finish last in the league after the loss of the program’s all-time leading scorer, RMU posted the highest-ever finish in league play under Colontino’s guidance, with the most CHA wins and points ever, and also reset school records for longest winning streak and longest unbeaten streak during the course of the season.

Colontino, who previously had claimed CHA Coach of the Year honors, led the squad to one of the biggest regular-season wins in program history Jan. 21 when Robert Morris scored twice in the final three minutes to defeat conference powerhouse Mercyhurst for the first time ever.

The victory not only ended the Lakers’ 28-game conference unbeaten streak, but it would serve as a harbinger of things to come for the Colonials.

RMU entered the 2012 CHA Tournament as the second seed, but with top-seeded Mercyhurst having won nine straight tournament titles, the Lakers were clearly still the team to beat.

After dispatching of Niagara in the semifinals, Robert Morris and Mercyhurst met with the championship on the line. The Colonials opened up a two-goal lead within the first 12 minutes and never let Mercyhurst pull even as RMU held on for a 3-2 win to dethrone the long time CHA champions.

Robert Morris’ success occurred due to dramatic improvements on both ends of the ice. RMU broke the single-season school records for both overall goals and goals per game as it averaged over one goal per game more than last season. The Colonials’ progress on the defensive end was even more evident as RMU was one of eight squads nationally to allow fewer than two goals per game as Robert Morris allowed approximately 1.90 goals per game fewer than it conceded during the 2010-11 season.

Before coming to Robert Morris, Colontino had served as associate head coach at Mercyhurst since 2006. At Mercyhurst he helped guide teams to the NCAA Tournament in each of his five years, including earning two Frozen Four berths, and has over a decade of women’s hockey coaching experience at the Division I level.

In Colontino’s five seasons with Mercyhurst, the Lakers posted an overall record of 148-25-9 (.838), advanced to the national championship game once, made two Frozen Four appearances, qualified for the NCAA Tournament five times, were ranked No. 1 nationally in each season and won five College Hockey America (CHA) tournament championships and five regular-season titles. Immediately after Colontino returned to Mercyhurst as associate head coach, the Lakers went 32-2-3 in 2006-07, claiming the program record for victories, as they registered a ninewin improvement from the previous season and were ranked No. 1 nationally for 13 weeks.

After a one-goal loss in the NCAA Tournament to the eventual national champions ended the Lakers’ 2007-08 season, the 2008-09 squad reached new heights. Entering the NCAA Tournament on a 15-game winning streak, Mercyhurst advanced to its first-ever Frozen Four with a victory over St. Lawrence and proceeded to top Minnesota in a thrilling semifinal contest to move into the national championship game against Wisconsin. The Lakers were ranked No. 1 for 23 weeks the following season, went 30-3-3 and advanced to the Frozen Four for the second straight season before succumbing in overtime to Cornell.
