Robert Morris competed against nationally ranked Northeastern University and Boston University last weekend in Boston, Mass. The Colonials first match up resulted in a 3-3 overtime tie with the No. 7 Huskies. Senior forward Kelsey Thomas led the RMU scoring effort as she tallied the first hatrick of her career registering a goal in each regulation period of the contest. Senior assistant captain Cobina Delaney and sophomore forward Rebecca Vint each tallied two assists in the contest.

On Saturday, RMU fell to the No. 3 Terriers by a 3-0 decision. Senior netminder Kristen DiCiocco registered two 30+ save performances over the weekend. In each game, DiCiocco notched game-highs for shots stopped and combined for 68 saves on the weekend.

Series vs. Vermont

RMU’s last meeting with the Catamounts took place during November of 2006 in Burlington, Vt. The Colonials won the contest, 2-0. Current coach Brianne McLaughlin earned the victory between the pipes for RMU stopping a game-high 21 shots.

The other two contests between Robert Morris and Vermont took place in the Colonials innagural season. The first series between the two teams resulted in a 1-1 spilt. RMU won the first contets, 2-1 before dropping the next day rematch 3-1. The first victory for the RMU hockey program came against the Catamounts on Nov. 5, 2005.

Scouting Vermont

The Catamounts return 20 players from the 2011-12 season while graduating only 3, including their points leader, forward Chelsea Rapin. Rapin led Vermont last season with 15 points. The Catamounts return forward Kellie Dineen who led the team in goals last year with eight. Dineen also dished out four assists to tally 12 points. Vermont also returns forward Amanda Pelkey who registered 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists) last season. Currently, sophomore forward Klara Myren leads the team in points with 9 (3 goals, 6 assists). Fellow sophomore forwards Meghan Huertas and Brittany Zuback are tied for second in points with seven. Huertas has scored four goals and passed out three assists while Zuback has registered three goals and four assists.

2012-13 season info Last Time Out The Robert Morris University women’s hockey team faced off against two nationally ranked teams last weekend in the Northeast part of the United States.

On Friday, RMU competed against No. 7 Northeastern University at Matthews Areana in Boston, Mass. Senior forward Kelsey Thomas led the RMU scoring effort as she tallied the first hatrick of her career registering a goal in each regulation period of the contest. With the hatrick, Thomas becomes just the sixth player in RMU program history to tally at least three goals in a single contest. Thomas, senior forward Cobina Delaney and sophomore forward Rebecca Vint all tallied multi-point efforts for the Colonials. With the multi-point effort, Thomas has now notched four points in RMU’s previous two games while Vint has now registered three points in two games. Richards is the lone Colonials to tally a point in each game so far this season for RMU. Junior forward Kristen Richards tallied an assist against Northeastern to extend her point-streak to three games.

Saturday RMU faced off against another nationally ranked opponent, Boston University. The No. 3 ranked Terriers earned the victory over the Colonials by a 3-0 decision.

Despite the loss, the Robert Morris team did put forth some impressive performances against the third ranked team in the country. RMU fired 24 shots against the Terriers. Richard, sophomore forward Katie Fergus and freshman forward Ashley Vesci led the Colonial effort combining for 12 shots. RMU won 27 of 48 faceoffs in the contest while sophomore forward Maddie Collias did not loose a single faceoff against her opponents and Richards won 73% of her faceoffs.

The Colonial defense also put up some impressive statistics against the Terriers. RMU held Boston to one less goal then its average of four goals per game this season. As a team, the Colonials blocked 17 Terrier shots. Senior assistant captain Jamie Joslin blocked four shots while sophomore defenseman Kylie St. Louis and Vint each blocked three.

Senior netminder Kristen DiCiocco received the start in net in both contests for RMU. DiCiocco combined to stop 68 shots while blocking 30+ shots in each contest. In each game, DiCiocco registered game-high numbers for shots blocked. She registered a .923 save percentage as the Colonials tied with No. 7 Northeastern in overtime Friday evening, 3-3. On Saturday, DiCiocco held No. 3 Boston below their goals-per-game average of four while registering a scoreless second period.

The Colontino Era In just his first season as head coach of the Robert Morris University women’s hockey team, Paul Colontino led the Colonials to unprecedented heights. Colontino led the Colonials to the largest year-to-year win improvement in Division I women’s hockey in 2011-12 before guiding the squad to a storybook ending as RMU captured the program’s first-ever conference championship.

He helped RMU break its program record for wins by the end of January and finished the season with 19 victories, an amazing 13-win improvement from the prior season. Despite being picked to finish last in the league after the loss of the program’s all-time leading scorer, RMU posted the highest-ever finish in league play under Colontino’s guidance, with the most CHA wins and points ever, and also reset school records for longest winning streak and longest unbeaten streak during the course of the season Colontino led the squad to one of the biggest regular-season wins in program history Jan. 21 when Robert Morris scored twice in the final three minutes to defeat conference powerhouse Mercyhurst for the first time ever. The victory not only ended the Lakers’ 28-game conference unbeaten streak, but it would serve as a harbinger of things to come for the Colonials.

Robert Morris’ success occurred due to dramatic improvements on both ends of the ice. RMU broke the single-season school records for both overall goals and goals per game as it averaged over one goal per game more than last season. The Colonials’ progress on the defensive end was even more evident as RMU was one of eight squads nationally to allow fewer than two goals per game as Robert Morris allowed approximately 1.90 goals per game fewer than it conceded during the 2010-11 season.

Colontino also guided a couple of Colonials to have noteworthy individual seasons as junior Kristen DiCiocco claimed the CHA Regular-Season Goaltending Trophy and freshman Rebecca Vint was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Year.

We Are the Champions, my friend!

After being selected to finish fourth in the CHA preseason poll, the Colonials stunned the College Hockey America conference by upsetting nationally ranked Mercyhurst in the CHA Tournament Championship by a score of 4-3. RMU claimed the program’s first-ever league title while simultaneously ending the Lakers’ run of nine consecutive CHA tournament championships. Goalie Kristen DiCiocco was named CHA Tournament MVP while seniors Brianna Delaney and Kathryn Stack earned All-Tournament Team honors.

The Hat Trick Club

Last Friday evening, senior forward Kelsey Thomas joined an elite group of Robert Morris women’s hockey alumni when she registered a three-goal performance against No. 7 Northeastern University. Thomas is the only active Colonial who has registered a hat trick in their career and becomes just the fifth player in RMU program history to score at least three goals in a single-game. Thomas becomes the first RMU skater who has accomplished this feat against a nationally ranked opponenet.

Coach of the Year

Shortly after the 2011-12 season came to an end in tremendous fashion, the RMU hockey program received more fantastic news. First-year head coach Paul Colontino was selected as the National Coach of the Year by U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO). On top of winning National Coach of the Year, Colontino was also name CHA Coach of the Year.

“It’s a great honor to receive recognition like this,” Colontino said. “It’s definitely something that I think the whole program can share in--the assistant coaches, the staff and the players. A lot of great coaches had great seasons across the nation this year, so that obviously makes it very special that Robert Morris was picked for this award.”

Distinguished DiCiocco

Goaltender Kristen DiCiocco became just the second Colonials in the young history of the program to garner first-team all-conference recognition. After an impressive regular season, DiCiocco also claimed the Regular-Season Goaltending Trophy. The junior goalie received the starting nod on 28 seperate occasions in RMU 30 game season. She led the CHA in both goals against average (1.96), ranking 11th nationally, and save percentage (.926) at the conclusion of the regular season. She lowered her GAA to 1.92 in league play and only allowed 14 even-strength goals in 12 conference games played. During the middle portion of the season, DiCiocco became the first Colonial ever to win honors in four consecutive weeks in which RMU hit the ice. DiCiocco also tied the RMU record for most single-season CHA weekly honors by a goalie (five), matching the mark that assistant coach Brianne McLaughlin set in 2006-07.

Back-to-Back CHA Rookies of the Year

After Thea Imbrogno became the first student-athlete in program history to win a major postseason league award as she was named the CHA Rookie of the Year in 2011, one short year later another RMU freshman would take home the honor. In March 2012, the CHA announced freshman forward Rebecca Vint as the Rookie of the Year.

Vint had the best offensive season in program history despite being brand new to the collegiate game. She broke RMU’s single-season records in points (42), goals (21) and assists (21) as she became the first Colonial to ever reach 40 points or 20 goals in a campaign. Vint, who was also named to the CHA’s AllRookie Team, broke the Colonials’ record for most in-season awards in a campaign as she earned two Player of the Week honors from the CHA, two Rookie of the Month accolades and six Rookie of the Week awards. Vint exploded onto the scene when she scored in each of the team’s opening six games, marking the first time ever that a Colonial had scored in any six consecutive games. She reset the longest point streak in school history (12) and posted 13 multi-point games and six multi-goal outings. Vint sits fourth nationally in points per game among rookies with 1.40 and is tied for third nationally in goals by rookies.

Vint, who leads the league and is among the top 10 nationally overall in game-winning goals, also led the team in points in CHA play. Vint tallied a seasonbest four points in a game Oct. 21 at RPI and also assisted on both the tying and winning goals in RMU’s late comeback victory over Mercyhurst.

Studious Student-Athletes

Senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney and freshman forward Katelyn Scott were named as the 2011-12 College Hockey America’s Co-Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Both Delaney and Scott the honor courtesy of sterling 4.0 grade point averages allowing them to become the first student-athletes in program history to claim this honor from the CHA. Delaney and Scott also helped RMU take an amazing five of the six spots on the league’s Academic All-Star Team, which rewards a half-dozen student-athletes in the conference for posting the highest GPAs at their respective positions. Senior assistant captain Kathryn Stack and sophomores Thea Imbrogno and Anneline Lauziere joined the aforementioned duo to grab all but one place on the team.

Team Highs

Against the No. 7 Northeastern University Huskies last Friday, RMU registed four team highs for the 2012-13 campaign. The Colonials registered team highs for goals, assists, points and saves. RMU scored three goals in the overtime contest while dishing out five assists for a total of eight points. The three goal performance marks the second of the season for Robert Morris as it tallied three goals against Princeton in the opening weekend of the season.

Senior goaltender Kristen DiCiocco stopped a season high 36 shots.

Offense from the Defense

Twelve minutes into the CHA Tournament Champsionship contest, junior defenseman Jamie Joslin tallied an assist on Thea Imbrogno’s goal that gave the Colonials a 2-0 advantage over the Lakers. With the assist Joslin tied the single-season record for points by a defenseman with 16. Joslin joined form Colonial Mallory Giambra (‘10)as the category leaders.

Schedule Notes

After the home series this weekend, Robert Morris will face off on the road with a pair of non-conference foes that both finished among the nation’s top 10 last season and will also embark on the longest roadtrip in CHA history. The Colonials will also meet Penn State for the first time in school history as part of their 20-game conference schedule. Robert Morris will meet its five CHA foes for four games each during the season, and all half-dozen league squads will participate in the 2013 CHA Tournament, which will be hosted by the league’s regular-season champion. Besides facing nationally ranked confernece foe Mercyhurst, the Colonials will also faceoff against Northeastern University and Boston University, both of which are ranked in the national top-ten. The Terriers of Boston University earned a birth to the 2012 NCAA

Tournament with a record of 23-13-1.

Noteworthy Newcomers

The RMU Colonials welcome three transfers to their 2012-13 roster. Kristen Richards and Kelsey Gunn both come to Robert Morris from Niagara University while Delayne Brian hales from Wayne State University.

Kristen Richards is a junior forward who saw action in 33 contests for the Purple Eagles as she registered six goals and five assists. Richards hometown is Toronto, Ontario.

Kelsey Gunn, defenseman from Smith Falls, Ontario saw action in 26 contests as a freshman at Niagara. She scored two goals and dished out seven assists. Gunn was named to the 2011-12 CHA All-Academic Team.

After taking a year off from game action, Delayne Brian joins the Colonials for her senior season. At Wayne State during the 2010-11 season, Brian started in every game for Wayne State setting a new single-season record for the Warriors.She led the CHA in save percentage and ranked second nationally in saves. She was honored as CHA Goalie of the Week on six occasions and received Goalie of the Month accolades three times.

RMU also adds a noteworthy coach to the staff this season in Ashley Harper. Harper served as the director of hockey operations during the 2011-12 season. This year Harper will take one a new role as the volunteer assistant coach. Harper graduated from conference rival Mercyhurst in 2011.

Fresh Faces

RMU adds four freshman to the roster this season. Leah Carlson, a defenseman joins the team from Copper Center, Alaska. Carlson is the first player in program history from the state of Alaska. Forward Ashley Vesci, a Pittsburgh native, becomes a Colonial after she spent her childhood playing at the RMU ISC. Megan Eady and Anissa Gamble add to the list of Colonials who hale from north of the U.S. border. Eady, a defenseman joins RMU from Renfew, Ontario.

Record Breaking Machines

Junior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno ranks in the career top five in Robert Morris program history for points, goals and assists. Coming into the 2012-13 season, Imbrogno ranked fifth in career points and fifth in career assists. Imbrogno is tied for fifth in career goals scored with former Colonial forward Megan Picnic (‘09).

After tallying two assists in the Colonials home series of this season, Imbrogno moved into a tied for forth in career assists. Imbrogno remains fifth all-time in points and tied at fifth place in career goals scored. If Imbrogno keeps up her scoring habits from the previous two seasons, she is likely to move into the top three in all three career categories.

Imbrogno also holds sports in the same categories for single season performance. She worked her way into the single-season record books after an impressive sophomore campaign. Imrbrogno ranks second in single-season points, fourth in single-season goals scored and second in single-season assists.

Sophomore Rebecca Vint reset the single-season record book last season as a freshman. She set new totals for points, goals and assists. The Colonials will look to Vint for another successful season as she enters her sophomore campaign.

“Vermont is a good hockey team. They have a new coach this year, which adds a new boost to the team, similar to how our team was last season. We are expecting them to be a hardworking team that has good goaltending. They’ve played some good team this year already and played them tight, so we’re looking forward to a good test for our team. It’s going to be another one of those games where you’re playing an out-of-conference team which allows us to really gage ourselves on where we’re at throughout the country. We’re looking forward to the opportunity.”

During the offseason, College Hockey America has expanded from a four team league to a six team league. Long time CHA member Niagara University dropped its women’s hockey program which opened a slot for a new team. Last season the CHA annouced Penn State would join the conference for its innagural Division I year. The CHA decided to expand to a six team league when Lindenwood University and RIT showed interest in joining the conference. The expansion of the conference will allow the CHA Tournament structure to change allowing the Tournament to be played over an eight day span.

For the first time in CHA history, hosting of the post-season tournament will be awarded to the team that finishes the regular season with best conference record. The tournament will be reformatted for the upcoming season as all six conference squads will take part in the event. The top two teams in the regular season will receive byes to the semifinal round while the four remaining squads compete against one another in the first round. The third seed will host the sixth seed and the fourth seed will host the fifth seed in best-of-three series Friday, March 1, through Sunday, March 3.

Teams will be reseeded after the first round, and the regular-season champion will then host the semifinals and championship Friday, March 8, and Saturday, March 9.

Paul Colontino Head Coach Second Season Mercyhurst ‘00 In Colontino’s first season, he made an immediate impact on the Robert Morris program. He led the Colonials to the largest yearto-year win improvement in Division I women’s hockey in 2011-12 before guiding the squad to a storybook ending as RMU captured the program’s first-ever conference championship. His turn-around of the RMU program earned him USCHO (U.S. College Hockey Online) National Coach of the Year accolades.

Colontino led Robert Morris women’s hockey to unprecedented heights. He helped RMU break its program record for wins by the end of January and finished the season with 19 victories, an amazing 13-win improvement from the prior season. Despite being picked to finish last in the league after the loss of the program’s all-time leading scorer, RMU posted the highest-ever finish in league play under Colontino’s guidance, with the most CHA wins and points ever, and also reset school records for longest winning streak and longest unbeaten streak during the course of the season.

Colontino, who previously had claimed CHA Coach of the Year honors, led the squad to one of the biggest regular-season wins in program history Jan. 21 when Robert Morris scored twice in the final three minutes to defeat conference powerhouse Mercyhurst for the first time ever.

The victory not only ended the Lakers’ 28-game conference unbeaten streak, but it would serve as a harbinger of things to come for the Colonials.

RMU entered the 2012 CHA Tournament as the second seed, but with top-seeded Mercyhurst having won nine straight tournament titles, the Lakers were clearly still the team to beat.

After dispatching of Niagara in the semifinals, Robert Morris and Mercyhurst met with the championship on the line. The Colonials opened up a two-goal lead within the first 12 minutes and never let Mercyhurst pull even as RMU held on for a 3-2 win to dethrone the long time CHA champions.

Robert Morris’ success occurred due to dramatic improvements on both ends of the ice. RMU broke the single-season school records for both overall goals and goals per game as it averaged over one goal per game more than last season. The Colonials’ progress on the defensive end was even more evident as RMU was one of eight squads nationally to allow fewer than two goals per game as Robert Morris allowed approximately 1.90 goals per game fewer than it conceded during the 2010-11 season.

Before coming to Robert Morris, Colontino had served as associate head coach at Mercyhurst since 2006. At Mercyhurst he helped guide teams to the NCAA Tournament in each of his five years, including earning two Frozen Four berths, and has over a decade of women’s hockey coaching experience at the Division I level.

In Colontino’s five seasons with Mercyhurst, the Lakers posted an overall record of 148-25-9 (.838), advanced to the national championship game once, made two Frozen Four appearances, qualified for the NCAA Tournament five times, were ranked No. 1 nationally in each season and won five College Hockey America (CHA) tournament championships and five regular-season titles. Immediately after Colontino returned to Mercyhurst as associate head coach, the Lakers went 32-2-3 in 2006-07, claiming the program record for victories, as they registered a ninewin improvement from the previous season and were ranked No. 1 nationally for 13 weeks.

After a one-goal loss in the NCAA Tournament to the eventual national champions ended the Lakers’ 2007-08 season, the 2008-09 squad reached new heights. Entering the NCAA Tournament on a 15-game winning streak, Mercyhurst advanced to its first-ever Frozen Four with a victory over St. Lawrence and proceeded to top Minnesota in a thrilling semifinal contest to move into the national championship game against Wisconsin. The Lakers were ranked No. 1 for 23 weeks the following season, went 30-3-3 and advanced to the Frozen Four for the second straight season before succumbing in overtime to Cornell.
