Project 1 THE CORPORATE CULTURE - 2D ANIMATION

Guide - Delwyn Jude Remedios

INTRODUCTION Story based on the dark side of the corporate culture, Even though, outside it seems like huge salary and white collar job, One will be going through a lot of stress and depression. This is because of many reasons and the work culture which the system has in corporates. The idea was to make a statement on the existing system and the layers of politics in corporate culture. Their life runs based on the credits, And what if people try to steal more credits from others.

STORY BOARD Based on this idea, a story was written and converted into a story board. These set of images were some quick sketches inorder to give a basic layout of the story.

And the story goes on...

ANIMATICS The whole story board of 36 scenes were scanned, and put in time frame. The background voice is recorded and music was added. This video clip is more or less a comic strip with a dialogue track. This is were the story set. And here we can really find whether the script is working or not.

CHARACTER DESIGN

So, the characters were made with extremely minimum elements and the expressions were made.

REFERENCES

The Big snit

The cat came back Some of the works were refered inorder to arrive at the style. And it was also made sure that the other style is not repeated or matched with the current style of charecter and animation used.

Printed Rainbow

The idea was to make the characters simple, so that more movements can be explored.

MEDIUM USED

Software used - Flipaclip

EDITING The whole animation was drawn using tab and stylus. To get a imperfect rustic feel, each and every frame was drawn and the movie got animated. Around 1000 frames were drawn for making this clip. The movie goes in a frame rate of 12 per second.

STYLE

The scenes were cut into small clipping of 3 to 5 seconds each. So, around 30 small clippings were made and sent for post production. The feel of the movie is set here. Here the original audio and background music comes into picture.

AUDIO Since the whole story is a narration, the dialogues were recorded. A very serious tone of BGM has been added to show the seriousness of the film. Other small audios like typing sound, paper movement sound has also been added. The characters were made in such a way that it does not look so perfect. There will be a overall sense of imperfection all through the movie and it was made intentional. Perfection in characters and movements can be eaily achieved with system and current softwares. Also a reminder that humans aren’t perfect.

Project 2 STORY BOARD - OLD AGE HOME

Guide - PK Neelkantan

INTRODUCTION Generation gap between the old and young people makes it difficult for them to cope up with each other as no matter how much they try, the elderly people need their children’s time and not money during their old age. This project is to make ourselves realise that we should take care of the old people because everyone has to face this phase of life in future. A story board to be created expressing the emotions from on both younger and older side so that the feeling may be clearly understood by the audience Source - http://eluthu.com/kavithai/266965.html Author – Muhil M

THE STORY One beautiful red colored car came and stopped in that street. The environment was surrounded by trees and plants. From the car, two persons came out. One is typical office going man and another is old man. They both went to the Old age home in that street.

running for around 50 years. Church Father is taking care of this home. Man : Ok madam, Fees? Reception Lady : sir, monthly it will cost 15,000 Man : Ok. Dad. your things are in car. Ill take it and come. /His dad nodded his head/ He takes the things from car and comes to reception. His Dad and church father were talking as if they know both eachother. Before Reception lady : Sir, come and see the room. His Dad went inside to see the room. Man started talking to church father. Man : Seems like you both had a long chat. You know my father before? Church father : Yeah, I know him. 30 years back he came here and adopted a male child. He also asked me not to tell this to you. Don’t worry. We will take care of your father. The End

In the reception, the lady greeted both of them Reception lady : Please sit down sir. What can i do for you? Man : Good morning madam. He is my dad. I want him to join here in this old age home. Can you please let me know the details.? Reception lady : Sir, In this home above 100 old age people are there. This home is

ROUGH SKETCHES OF THE STORY A short rough sketches were made inorder to get the essence of the storyboard. It was made using thumbnails. The idea was to know about the camera angles in which the characters are going to be placed. And the story flow and to control the length of the story.

CHARACTER DESIGN

The idea was to create a stop motion kind of a story board. The characters were made to express and it is photographed. The dialogues were written as a kind of comic book. This was to break the conventional rules of 2 dimensional vector images used in Graphic novels and comic strips. Since the story revolves around 4 characters, the style has been maintained to achieve different characters. The head will be changed for changing the expressions of the characters

The outside scene were not taken in a single shot. It was taken by multiple photographs and it was put in layer one over another to get this visual.

Project 3 AMMA - OIL ON GLASS ANIMATION

Ambreesh Arya Pranavasthitha Raj Narayanan Soham Rakshit RM Udhayan

Guide - Delwyn Jude Remedios

SONG SELECTION

STORY BOARD

Searched for folk songs of Telangana. Searched in YoutubeTalked to local people Avoided songs with religious and political content. Shortlisted three songs with emotional content. Finalised on ‘Amma’ rendered by Madhupriya based on discussions

TRANSLATION

Translated song divided in segments as per meanings. Thumbnails were added and arranged as needed Consulted the telugu students in our campus and got the lyrics translated.

EXCHANING IDEAS Major concern was to decide whether to adopt a literal representation. Chose to have a mixture of both. We tried to use strong metaphors deriving from the song. Personal memories were mapped and sorted to be in a time line. Tried to exchange ideas with visual representations via thumbnails. Made a rough animatic on an android app, Flipaclip. It was easier for us to adopt it to the medium, and to communicate our ideas to the team easily and effectively.

EXPRESSIONS

As we were making our animatic, we enacted actions and expressions to help us with the drawing and imagining frames. Mother’s nine month progression and scream sequence were acted and captured.

MEDIUM We tried out different media in sketching stage Considered which one can do justice to the theme Black and white was fixed. Oil paint on glass with its slow drying nature became undeniably the best we could choose

SCENES AND TRANSITIONS Scenes were finalised keeping the animation principles in mind. Kept some extra scenes, that could be used if something seem out of the line. Transitions were made depending up on the scenes Even so we have tried to keep a uniformity in transitions. Some were decided while animating the movie.

THE SETUP

Began with setting up a mini studio in the present DIC room. Everyone took turns in drawing. Not on a schedule, but on a convenience basis. Day and night working

PRODUCTION

DIFFICULTIES We did not have a remote. The camera could be operated with an android device\ That was eating up the battery- both camera’s and phone’s It slowed our work down. So we settled on one of us clicking the button on the camera.

EDITING Camera shake came as a companion in our journey. This was a tedious task to align. Took as much time as drawing it.

THE MOVIE - AMMA Amma is a folk song that narrates the hardships of a mother. Right from her baby’s childbirth to her aspirations. The narrator here is the grown up child who imagines her childhood with her mother. The shortfilm ends with a sense of separation and longing relevant in present day culture, that adds to the unending pain a mother goes through.

Project 4 DIGITAL PRESERVATION - QUTB SHAHI TOMBS

Three Dimensional restoration/visualisation of Qutb Shahi tombs.

Guide - Prasad Onkar

INTRODUCTION The idea is to capture the 3D space. Detailed 3D representations of cultural heritage sites before they are lost to natural disasters, destroyed by human aggression or ravaged by the passage of time.

WHY?

THREATS

• Archeological information about the origin of the culture. • Useful data for study of humanity. • Cultural History. • Climatic change of place. • Past life style. • Political statements. • Emotional attachment.

• • • • • • • •

Soil Erosion Religious Oppression Migration Population Growth Political situations Pollution Natural threats Rising sea level

PROCEDURES USED PREVIOUSLY

Royal Kasubi Tombs

• Photographs • Manual measurement and drawings on paper. • 3d scanning

3D SCANNING El camiono Real - California Mount Rushmore - USA Samarkhand - Uzbekistan Marble House - Newport RI

Project to restore Kasubi Tombs, a World Heritage Site destroyed in a fire 2010. It is being restored because they had a 3D scanned data with them

PROCESS • • • • • • • •

3D scanning CAD modelling Rendering Display Identify eroded parts Build it using CAD Storage of CAD Present it for the people.

DIFFICULTIES • Measurement?? • Practical difficulties in measuring the whole monument. • 7m x 7m length and there is no access to reach the top portion of the monument.

TOOL USED FOR VISUALISING Hologram a three-dimensional image formed by the interference of light beams from a laser or other coherent light source.

IBRAHIM QULI QUTB SHAH Ibrahim Qutb Shah Wali (1518 – 5 June 1580) was the fourth ruler of the kingdom of Golconda in southern India. He was the first of the Qutb Shahi dynasty to use the title "Sultan".He ruled from 1550 to 1580.

PEOPLE WHO VISIT THE PLACE • Around 400 to 500 people are visiting the monument daily. • School children • Foreigners (10 to 15) • Photographers(wedding/travellers) • Travellers • Government officials (renovating the place) • Workers

PHOTOMETRIC

PHOTOS AND MEASUREMENTS

Photos taken in such a way that one whole face gets recorded so that it will be easier for extracting the dimensions in 2d space. Picture of the monument were taken. Practically impossible to measure all the dimensions. So some of the dimensions have been taken for reference.

Input the reference dimensions in Pixel stick. Based on that, the other dimensions have been extracted. Not very accurate, 20 to 30mm of error found.

EXTRACTING DIMENSIONS FROM PHOTOS

DEVELOPING CAD

Once the clear picture of tomb has been drawn on paper, It has been 3D modeled. Software used - Sketchup

HOLOGRAPHIC VIDEO

TESTING

The screen has been split into 4 parts and the 3d structure was made to rotate. This video is projected using a big screen, and the hologram is placed above it. This gives a 3D illusion of the tomb.

Project 5 GAME DESIGN - POLOGONO CREATE A GAME FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN TO MAKE LEARNING EASY

with combined efforts of Kstitiz Agarwal Rahul Gond RM Udhayan

Guide - Uday Atvankar

INTRODUCTION Pologono is a card game played by three to five players. It is played using a deck of cards specially designed for this game. The aim of the game revolves around the completion of any shape. Once it is done, the child will know about the shape and its name in Hindi and English. The whole game will aim at indirect way of letting the child to learn about the polygons.

Setting up the game Shuffle the cards, Distribute 4 cards to each player. The remaining cards are placed in a stack face down. The top card from the stack is placed face up next to the stack, starting the discard pile. Play starts with the youngest player and then continue clockwise. Playing the game The first player takes either the top most face up card or top most face down cards. After picking a card, he/she has to throw a card near the stacked face down cards from the cards in his/her hand.

Age Group: 7 and above No.of Players: 3 to 5 Type: Card Game

Winning the game The first player to complete a shape will win the game. A shape can also be completed by using Star cards.

INSTRUCTION SHEETS

SHAPES IN POLOGONO

These six shapes were used in the game. They have been cut into 4 parts each. The names of the shapes have been written in English and Hindi. So, once a player finishes the game, he might have a completed shape and it’s name. This makes the player know about the shape unintentionally. Layers of the game is also possible depending upon the skill level of the students.

Project 6 FORM EXPLORATIONS - HONEY BEE

Guide - Prasad Onkar

STUDY ON HONEY BEE

PHYSICAL CHARECTERISTICS Single honey bee produces 1/12 Queen can lay 1500 eggs per day She can lay 1 million in her lifetime Can fly at 15 miles per hour Wings beat 200 times per second Hardworking Lead by Queen

SKETCHES

• Yellowish orange and black combination • Curvy Shaped abdomen with pointed tip • Top portion of the body covers orange and the bottom portion covers more black • Pointed tip portion is always black. • Body swelled in centre portion

META - PHYSICAL CHARECTERISTICS

From the original sketch, the unwanted physical elements were removed one bye one. The idea was to communicate that the final product is a honey bee by removing all the other elements.

EXPLORATIONS - REDUCING THE ELEMENTS

After trying in 2d space, the idea was to explore with different mediums. Inorder to simplify the form, different explorations were done by different materials. Might not be perfect as it was the part and parcel of design process. Materials used 1) Steel Wire 2) Thermocol.

EXPLORING DIFFERENT MATERIAL

FINAL PRODUCT

The simplified product was made with White clay. And the colour of the honey bee and its black tail has a major impact and those elements cannot be opted out. So, after making the white clay, it has been painted to give the honey bee look.

Project 7 GRAPHIC DESIGN

Guide - Rupesh Vyas

IMAGE TRACE GRAPHIC DESIGN Various kind os patterns were drawn using flat paint brush on one sheet. On another sheet, a small window is cut of 50mm x 50 mm and the patterns were marked and photographed. Same way 100mm x 100mm window was also used to obtain different patterns.

100mm x 100mm

100mm x 100mm

50mm x 50mm

50mm x 50mm

Selected patterns were imported in Illustrator and they are converted into image trace files. The idea is to take this random patterns and convert them into graphical elements. These elements are then rotated, scaled, multiplied to give a visual form.
