THE NEWS Controversy in Gallery Over
NUDE IMAGES Art exhibits come and go in the State Street Gallery on Robert Morris University’s first floor, but students do not usually take too much notice. Things changed though when word got out that pieces were turned away due to “a forest of penises,” according to a gallery assistant. When the image was posted on Facebook the buzz only got louder. Miles Halpern, a surrealist artist, submitted his work to the State Street Gallery over a year ago. He was then granted a show based on the superb content of his work. Four days before the art was scheduled to
go up Halpern was asked by the school to replace 33 feet wide worth of work due to the no nudity policy that the gallery has. The image had a number of penises in the background of the painting, which at first appear as rocks, not penises. According to Halpern, “I was told at the last minute that my work was ‘inappropriate for exhibition’ and unless I replace it with acceptable work that did not include nudity, my show would be cancelled.” Director of Brand and Image, JehanMady said, “There is a no nudity policy. It is a gallery, but we are under the school.” Mady explained that the artwork was never up in the gallery and the artist re-

placed it with other works in a timely manner upon request. “Public come in here and we have the school’s name to look out for,” added Mady. “We also have high school tour groups through here, so it is not just college students viewing this art work.” “I was never aware that RMU had a nudity policy,” claimed Halpern. “I think it is limiting. Art is about the human experience, good and bad, serious and silly, deep and light, clothed and nude. I would be sad for the students that such a limitation is put on what they are allowed to experience. I am not a wizard, a hypnotist, nor a con artist. I am someone who expresses ideas, feelings, and experiences in a free manner. My work is not a danger to college students and would not corrupt them.” “We informed the artist of the no nudity policy,” responds Jehan Mady. “The nudity policy is no nudity, none whatsoever.” Halpern explained, “My work has nudity in it to show purity, innocence, vulnerability, courage, and sometimes humor. My work is not pornographic, and not inappropriate.” However Halpern goes on to say, “In the end, I am so glad for the opportunity to show at RMU, to meet with the students at the reception, and to show my work at such a great location. I just regret it will not be the show that I intended.” Other universities in the area have the same no nudity policy in their galleries, including Columbia College Chicago. Jehan Mady also stated, “We have over 5,000 pieces in our collection and the policy applies to all of them. No nudity." v

A COLORFUL WAY TO HELP THE WOLRD
Photo by Blake Whitmore By Stacy Zamskaya The Color Run, also known as “The Happiest 5K on the Planet”, is a one of a kind experience, unlike any other marathon or race. The idea behind the event is not about speed, but instead focuses on enjoying the day with friends and family. Participants of all ages, shapes, and speeds embark on a three mile journey where waves of biodegradable dyes cover them as they pass through each color station. Chicago’s third Color Run took place on October 14th along the streets of downtown. More than fifteen thousand runners participated in the event, starting and ending in historic Grant Park. Participants began the run wearing all white, and as the colors began to fly, the end result consisted of each individual looking like a rainbow. At the conclusion of the race, all runners gathered in Grant Park for a color throwing ceremony, where both the participants and the organizers of the Color Run threw packets of dye among the immense crowd. This run was the first experience of a 5K race for many of the participants, including college student Dalton Homolka. “I had a blast the whole time - there was never a moment where I didn't want to be there. Plus the color throwing celebration afterwards was pretty awe-inspiring. Seeing the
colored powder fill the air was so surreal,” describes Homolka. This fun experience, filled with running through clouds of dye and bumping bass music, also had an imprint on helping a great cause. The proceeds from this year’s Color Run raised funds for The Team to End AIDS, whose mission is to help those who are affected and infected with HIV/AIDS. The charity creates and partners with events which focus on endurance sports and social activities, making the Color Run a perfect opportunity to celebrate accomplishments and the lives of men, women, and children whose lives are taken and those who are living with HIV/AIDS every day. As people become more conscientious about the problems facing the world today, various charities develop innovative programs to help raise funds as part of the solution. Red Frog Events, a Chicago based event planning company, focuses on creating just that. One of the most popular races created by Red Frog Events is the Warrior dash, a 5K interactive obstacle race, which partners with Green Sneakers, urging participants to donate used sneakers and running shoes after the race. Whether you are an Olympic runner or someone who has never been in a race, events like the Color Run are great one of a kind experiences to help change the world. v
New Concentrations The Business School Continues to Grow By Dan Ciaglia The School of Business Administration has been approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education to add two new concentrations – Finance and Marketing – to their curriculum. The programs will be offered only as a 2nd concentration option to students seeking a Bachelor of Business Administration concentration in the programs of Management or Accounting. According to Larry Nieman, Dean of the School of Business, the addition of the two new concentrations was agreed upon in order to support the Long Range Plan for offering more options to students as well as encourage them to complete a second concentration. The first Finance and Marketing concentration courses will be Investment Management (FIN 325) and Consumer Preferences & Choices (MKT 320). These two courses are scheduled to be offered in the Winter 2012 quarter during the day, specifically from 12:00-1:50, at the Chicago campus. While Finance and Marketing will start at the Chicago campus, the
School of Business hopes to extend the concentrations to the Orland Park campus in the future. Each of the programs will offer 4 courses. In addition to the 2 courses mentioned already, Finance will offer Financial Markets & International Finance (FIN 375), Fixed Income Securities & Portfolio Management (FIN

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR I hope everyone has settled back into the groove of school, I know I have. It is so good to see the school buzzing with activity again because Summer II is always quiet. I had momentarily forgotten how busy this school normally is, but I hope you are all enjoying it and getting involved. The newsroom is once again buzzing with activity, and we hope that when our new space is finished we can start to put on workshops for those who are interested in getting involved. Nothing makes the college experience great like the student organizations, so please take advantage of all this

THE NEWS RMU Partners With Cardinal Stritch for
New Doctoral Program By Lindsay Dahl
RMU GIVES BLOOD By Richard Connolly On Tuesday October 16th, the RMU Chicago campus teamed up with the American Red Cross to host an incredibly successful blood drive. The event, which was held on the first floor throughout the day's afternoon, was planned by some of RMU's own students as part of an ICenter project. Merrean Rosario, who just completed her Associate's Degree in Medical Assisting, headed up the blood drive as part of the ICenter project during the summer 2 semester. The purpose of the project was to create a health message for an audience in society, and what better way to get society involved than with a blood drive? Rosario had anxiously waited months for the drive to finally happen after the summer project, and on the day of the event she confidently took charge. Between handling details like advertising the event, ensuring the preregistered donors were able to give blood during the time they signed up for, and checking in on how people who had already donated were feeling – Rosario ran the show. Now pursuing her Bachelor’s degree, she eventually wants to enroll in graduate school for her Master’s. Medical school is her ultimate goal, but right now she is concentrating on obtain-
ing certain certifications needed to get a job in the field. Rosario is thankful for her experience so far at RMU, as it helped prepare her for things like organizing the blood drive alongside the American Red Cross. “Robert Morris had certainly prepared me for this event by teaching us the basics on how to be professional in any possible scenario,” says Rosario, “Our courses taught us how to manage a business, and take on the responsibilities that go along with it.” Donating blood is a simple act that nearly anyone can do, that has tremendously positive outcomes. One pint of blood is taken from each donor, and each pint of blood can save up to three lives. Organizers had aimed for a goal of 25 units of blood by the end of the day, but exceeded their own expectations and collected a total of 31. At the end of the day, a sizable group of people actually had to be turned away because of time restrictions and a lack of available supplies to take any more donations. Even with a busy schedule between school and work, Rosario hopes to organize another drive during the winter or spring semesters to give more people a chance to donate; so be on the lookout for more opportunities during the upcoming months to help save a life (or three) by giving blood. v
About a year ago Robert Morris began down the path to offering a Doctorate program for Higher Education. Cardinal Stritch University, from Milwaukee, Wisc., approached RMU to join forces and bring a doctorate program to Chicago. While the doctorate is offered by Cardinal Stritch University, RMU serves as the location of classes and the majority of students are from Robert Morris. Three professors rotate teaching these daylong classes on Saturday from 9-5. The total cost of the program is about $38,000 and is three years long. Each

The program is set up as a rigid cohort system, similar to the other programs at RMU. Currently there is one cohort that has just started its first year and another that is in its second year. Now in its second year, the initial cohort includes people of all different backgrounds but the majority of them are from RMU’s staff with a single faculty member. Nancy Donahoe, Director of Public Relations, is one of the program’s students who looking to move into teaching. The Dean for the Institute of Technology, Basim Khartabil, is another student; he hopes that through the completion of this degree he can connect leadership theory with practice. Then there is Stefanie Caldwell, Dean of Career Development, who is looking to reach a
few short and long term goals with her higher education. There is also a mother and daughter team, Kerry and Betsy Malm. aKerry has been with RMU for 23 years and is the assistant to the President of the University. Her Daughter, Betsy, has been with the university for 12 years and is the Dean of Admissions. The youngest student in the cohort is Sara O’Neal, Director of Education for Orland Park, Bensenville and Schaumburg, values education and is interested in student support and retention. The only faculty member Robert Tenuta, a Management professor is looking to grow and become a better teacher and increase his career potential; he has noticed a change in his teaching style and classroom delivery since beginning the program. There are students from other places including Nichole Gross, Principal at East Main’s Mark Twain School Dist. 63, Cory Rajek, Lutheran Pastor from Mount Calvary in Janesville WI, and Mary Woods, an instructor at Roosevelt University. Despite their unique backgrounds they all have one thing in common they love the program. One of the instructors, Dr. Peter Jonas, has his doctorate in history and was, in part, responsible for starting this program at RMU. Dr. Jonas, professor in the Doctoral Leadership Department, has been at Stritch for 31 years. Faculty in the Doctoral Leadership Department collaborated with administrators of RMU to bring the doctorate program to Chicago. The plan is to continue building the program at Robert Morris University and the collaboration with Cardinal Stritch University. With only one year after this one, these faulty and staff turned students now face the daunting task of completing their dissertations, which is five chapters long. v

RMU AIMS FOR TARGET By Ricahrd Connolly It is hardly worth reporting that finding a job is difficult right now. With a nationwide unemployment rate of 7.8%, and 9.1% in Illinois alone; this is the last news that any college students or recent grads want to hear. In today's tough job market, Robert Morris is stepping up and taking any action they can to get their students in the work force, including classes focused on personal branding, hosting job fairs and the online CareerConnect service. With the new City Target recently opening its doors this July, RMU's Senior Career Services Advisor, Silvia Arnold seized the opportunity to add some maroon and gold into the ranks
of the Target family. Many students who were enrolled within the last few months may recall seeing announcements about Target hiring for its City Target location at State and Madison, and just a few months later for the Chicago West Loop location. The job fairs, which were hosted in the 3rd floor Eagle's Nest at the Chicago campus, brought in a large crowd with hundreds of applicants interviewing to fill one of over 500 positions. From there, Target made their selections based on who would be best suited, and now many RMU students find themselves working for the quickly expanding Fortune 500 Company. uate Hector Massini is now a team leader at the State and Madison Target store. Prior to his new position, he had been working with another retailer, but after completing his degree in June and putting his resume out, he was immediately contacted by Target. Now working in a leadership role, Massini attributes his success to the skills he gained while in college. "A lot of the skills I learned at Robert Morris, I am using in my current position at Target," he says, "I am able to apply many of the strengths I developed at RMU to my responsibilities on the job. I feel my degree is certainly put to work." For current students, Massini recommends to, "Take everything seriously and use all the
resources given to you at RMU," and "‌don't be afraid to start off lower than you expect and work you're way up; there's plenty of room for growth." Although it can be a difficult time to look for a job, Massini is just one example of how applying the skills and resources available in college can result in a solid career with enormous potential. It may be a long time before employment rates return to a favorable level, but the cooperation between RMU and Target is just one example of how to take advantage of every opportunity while in school. Having caring faculty members like Silvia Arnold in career services certainly doesn't hurt the chances of finding a job either. v

High Hopes
FOR AN NHL SEASON By Dan Ciaglia The past few years have set an ongoing trend of labor disputes and lockouts in the world of professional sports. Just last year, the National Football League’s (NFL) season was nearly lost, and the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) season dropped 16 regular season games due to lengthy negotiations. This year, the infamous NFL Referees Association lockout created mass outrage from NFL players, owners, and fans everywhere. Not so recently was the ’04-05 NHL lockout, which forfeited an entire season.
This year, it seems as if history is about to repeat itself as once again, the National Hockey League (NHL) has locked out its Players Association and have yet to make any progress toward a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. If negotiations cannot move forward, the entire NHL season faces the possibility of being cancelled for the second time in 8 years. To make this simpler to understand, pro sports leagues like the NHL are a separate entity from the players themselves. In other words, the team is its own organization and the players are the employees. Every few years, the league
and players meet to discuss terms of their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which covers legal topics like the division of revenue between team owners and players, contracts, salaries, etc. If the CBA expires before a new deal is reached, the owners ban, or lock out, their players from participating in any hockey activities until a new deal can be reached. The NHL’s CBA, which was agreed upon in 2005, expired in September and negotiations for a new CBA have gone nowhere, forcing the cancellation of the entire preseason as well as the first few weeks of games.
As for this lockout itself, Gary Bettman, the commissioner of the NHL, and Donald Fehr, executive director of the NHL Players Association (NHLPA), are at the head of the stalemate negotiations. These negotiations are based around 4 main proposals from the owners, which are as follows: reduction of the players’ share of hockey related revenue, setting a maximum of 5 years on new player contracts, elimination of signing bonuses and imposing a uniform salary, and an extension of entry level contracts from 3 to 5 years. Since all 4 topics generally deal with limiting and reducing the players’ earnings, it is obvious how the players’ instant rejection arose. As of late October, Bettman has presented the NHLPA with 3 separate Collective Bargaining Agreements, all of which have been rejected immediately. With negotiations at a standstill, many of the league’s superstars and household names such as Alexander Ovechkin, Claude Giroux, and Patrick Kane have signed contracts to play overseas for the duration of the lockout. The fact that many of the league’s best players are moving to international leagues to play indicates that they have some idea that negotiations are and will continue to remain stagnant, leaving NHL fans everywhere with nothing but hope that just maybe the two sides can come together before another season is lost. v
RMU Peoria Hockey Is All in the Family By Jim Sanchez & Jane Wendorff-Craps The RMU-Peoria Hockey team has always considered itself a small family, but this year it is a bit more literal. The Eagles have been helped to their 6-0 record by three sets of brothers. This season’s roster includes Jake and Pat Garrett (Peoria, IL), Ryan and Matt Buchen (Winnipeg, Manitoba), and Jono and Brandon Neville (Peoria, IL). Coach Jim Sanchez said, “I have two brothers and never had the chance to play on the same team as them because of our age differences. I think this is special and the brothers really enjoy it. It is funny to see their sibling rivalry come out in practice sometimes.” Pat Garrett believes there is a definite advantage to having siblings on the same team: “Speaking for the guys in general, I think there’s an unspoken bond on the ice, it’s something that you develop with your teammates, but it’s
almost instinct with your brother. There’s just an added rivalry.” He added that having his brother on the team forces him to “step up his game.” Pat naturally wants his brother to succeed, but he recognizes that when his brother is playing well he, too, must measure up equally. Canadian player Matt Buchen also recognizes the benefits of playing with the Peoria Eagle family: “We rely on each other on and off the ice. We’re not just a team with three brothers; we’re a team of 28 brothers always looking out for each other.” Buchen credits the relationships he has with his teammates to the successes they’ve had on the ice in the past few years. The Peoria team has players from all over North America. Their hockey record may speak for itself, but the quality of player transfers into the quality of the person. The Peoria team prides itself in high GPA, volunteerism, and being overall great people. v

Super Foods Pack the Place for Athletes

Whether it’s Skittles for that sugary energy boost, or your favorite morning breakfast to start your game day. Almost every athlete has a pregame ritual that consists of eating a favorite meal or light snack. However unless you are under a strict diet plan you probably are making the wrong choices. Here are some more healthy foods that surely benefit athletes. Oatmeal: Ditch the over sweetened cereal and start your morning off with a healthy helping of oats. Oatmeal is highly soluble in fiber and complex carbohydrates. Oatmeal is also a good source of protein and vitamin b which helps your body refresh after a hard workout. You can also add a little bit of bananas for an extra boost of energy. Walnuts: Walnuts are a great and healthy plant based snack that is rich is fiber, vitamin E and many B vitamins. Walnuts have been known to lower cholesterol and also improve bone health. They make for a good after workout snack and they even can provide you with extra energy before your workouts.
Wild Salmon: Also known as the king fish because of its nutrients. Wild Salmon has omega-3 fatty acids in it which produces a healthy blood flow and helps reduce the risk of heart disease. Salmon also has vitamin B12 and B6 and other antioxidants that help your body and your metabolism. This is perfect for cardio workouts. Sweet Potatoes: Sweet Potatoes are rich in A and C Vitamins that protects your body against cold weather effects and removes free radicals from your body which keep your body and your skin looking and feeling young. Sweet potatoes are also perfect for producing great muscle functions.
Chia Seeds: Chia Seeds are known for being a fiber enhancing super food loaded with other nutrients as well. The seeds are known for helping the body absorb water and prolonging hydration which makes this super food fantastic in supporting your body and getting you through prolonged training sessions.
By Dan Ciaglia The icy chill in the late September air didn’t stop flocks of RMU faithful from filling the Morris Field stands to cheer on their Eagles to a thrilling 31-28 victory over Trinity International University Trojans in the school’s annual Pack the Place event. The Eagles, led by NAIA leading rusher Lamont Wims’ 282 total yards and 4 touchdowns, improved their record to 5-1 on the year. Needless to say, the victory didn’t come easy. The Trojans came out of the locker room ready to go and showed that by taking an early 6-0 lead on the opening possession after a 75 yard drive that took six minutes off the clock. The Eagles finally got on the board in the 2nd quarter after Trae Berndt’s 15-yard field goal and took a 10-6 lead on their next possession after Wims’ first score of the night, a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:50 left to in the half. The Trojans didn’t take long to get their lead back, going 75 yards in just 1:34 to take a 13-10 lead into halftime. The Marching Maroon, Dance Team, and Cheerleaders kept the crowd entertained and enthused with their halftime performances. When it came time for the 2nd half of football, TIU more or less dominated the start of the 3rd quarter, driving down the
field with an 18 play drive that took 7:45. Despite this, the Eagles’ defense stayed strong and held the Trojans to a field goal. Now down 16-10, Wims and QB Matt Westerkamp put the offense into high gear and took a drive into the 4th quarter, capping it off with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Westerkamp to Wims and a 17-16 lead with 14:56 left to play in the game. However, the stingy Trojans stayed stride-for-stride with the Eagles with a 70-yard touchdown drive. After a failed 2-point conversion attempt, the Eagles wasted no time erasing the 22-17 deficit. Dontrel Chance returned the TIU kickoff 47 yards, and on the very next play, Wims recorded his 3rd touchdown of the night on a 43-yard run. The Eagles extended their lead to 31-22 after stopping a fake punt attempt and a 5-yard touchdown from Wims, his 4th of the night. Once again, the Trojans refused to go down without a fight, taking just 58 seconds to go 80 yards and cut the Eagles’ lead to 31-28. After an Eagles punt, the Trojans had 2:46 left to try and make things interesting. They drove all the way down to the Eagles 10-yard line, but the defense held their ground and kept the Trojans from scoring any points. That proved to be all they needed to send the fans home happy with another Eagles victory. v

Film Review
HERE COMES THE BOOM By Adrian Saucedo If the sole role of a movie is to entertain, then Here Comes the Boom achieves its goal. Often times, movie trailers make a movie more appealing than it is or fail to demonstrate the essence of the film. In this case, the movie trailer shows exactly what the film is about and what to expect from it. The film is a comedy, it is not an action film although it does have some action scenes, and it is certainly not drama as there is little development in the storyline and characters. As a comedy, the film is average it is neither too comical nor too bland. At times, the film tries to be serious touching on social issues without going to deep into them such as the failing school system, the struggling family man, immigrants’ quest for citizenship, and the economy. The film stars Kevin James as Scott Voss, a careless biology teacher. After learning the school is struggling financially and Principal Becher (Greg Germann) plans to cut extracurricular activities, including the music program, Scott pledges to raise
the money and save music teacher Marty (Henry Winkler) from being laid off. This gesture attracts the attention of Bella Flores (Salma Hayek), a colleague. To raise the $48,000 the school needs to save the music program, Scott first attempts to teach a citizenship class, but soon realizes he will not raise enough money. It is through one of his students, Niko (Bas Rutten) a former MMA
The film stars Kevin James as Scott Voss, a careless biology teacher. fighter, that he gets the idea of raising the money by becoming an MMA fighter after one night at Niko’s apartment of watching a UFC match and learning that the loser gets $10,000 while the winner gets $50,000. Fans of Kevin James will be pleased with his performance, since this film is Kevin’s best performance since Hitch. He is a likable character as are all the actors in the
film. The film casted real MMA stars including Bas Rutten and Mark DellaGrotte who did a good job playing their roles, both with humor and credibility. It is also worth mentioning that Kevin James co-wrote the script with King of Queen’s writer Rock Reuben and Allan Loeb (The Dilemma). Frank Coraci directed the film, he is known for The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer and The Zookeeper. Overall, the film is average. It fails to develop a strong storyline with defined characters, delivers a few laughs, and is very predictable. What deserves praise are the actors’ performances, especially Kevin James’ performance as he prepared for the role a little more than a year before filming began. Kevin took his role seriously and lost around 80 pounds through diet and training to portray his role with more credibility. Although it is the same underdog role he has been playing in other films, in this one he showed his commitment to the portrayal of his character and the audience gets to see a more serious though still funny facet of Kevin James.v

Most artist seem to favor party and fun music while others branch into the more serious and deep category. Watsky is one of few artists who has mastered both styles and it all shows in his music. Watsky’s first major accomplishment came in 2006 when he competed in the national slam poetry contest as a representative of the San Francisco team that won fourth place. His performance at the competition got great reviews from critics as he was dubbed as the Bay area’s teen champion. His poetic prowess has even gotten him a short profiling in the Boston Globe. Watsky soon released two hip hop albums
the first one entitled Watsky in 2009 and Guilty Pleasures in 2010. He then started to upload his music to his YouTube channel. Along with his already large poetic fan base and his newly attained rap fan base he became one of the most popular people on YouTube. His popularity on YouTube gained him a role as William Shakespeare in the popular Epic Rap Battles of History series in which popular historical figures face off against one another in a rap battle style format. In 2011 he released his next project titled A New Kind of Sexy. Which features the title song and a free verse titled pale kid raps fast. He released a video for the song and changed the title to Watsky raps fast as the video hit 21 million views on YouTube which is his most to date. The video had gained so much popularity he was he
invited on the Ellen DeGeneres Show to perform the song. His most recent work consist of a mix tape titled Nothing Like the First Time which has both deep and fun filled tracks on it like “Wounded Healer,” which tells the story of his father dealing with a friend’s death and “Rich Girl,” which is a fun take on women and their love for material things. So whether it’s because of his poetic prowess or his passionate and heartfelt music George Watsky is surely an artist that you should know.v

Shiny Toy Guns: III

The Los Angeles based quartet released a long-awaited new album, III, on October 23 after a three year hiatus. Shiny Toy Guns reunited with the original vocalist, Carah Faye Charnow, who is known for hits like “Le
Disko” and “You are the One” for this album. Charnow’s return brought cohesion to the band’s well-known sound but also urged a new musical direction. The album flows as a cohesive work, while each song has characteristics of being a single on its own. The first track, “Somewhere to Hide”, starts the album off with strong synth-rock melodies and brings forth an upbeat optimistic feel, while introducing Charnow’s ability to bring forth captivating vocals. “Waiting Alone”, the first single from the album, combines the vocals of Carah Charnow and Chad Petree, which is classic Shiny Toy Guns. The single resonates with anyone lost in love and confusion, with the bittersweet chorus repeating “I’m always waiting alone for you/You used to make me feel so much alive.” The breakout single begins a series of much deeper and emotional songs, such as “Carrie”, which explains
the band’s need for Carah Charnow’s return. “Speaking Japanese” surprises the listener with electro-heavy chorus lines and Charnow’s edgier vocals, reminiscent of Season of Poison’s “Ghost Town”. Charnow and Petree show their musical chemistry on “Wait for Me”, with Charnow’s light and soft melody and Petree’s solid harmonies. The buildup in the track reminds the listener of changing seasons, especially with its ambient intro and glowing electronic interludes. After ten tracks of mostly electro-pop, the last song, “Take Me Back to Where I Was”, consists of Petree’s solo vocals and piano instrumentals which fade into the distance and provide a cohesive conclusion to the record. III brings out a lot of strengths from Shiny Toy Guns and satisfies the fans who have been waiting for this new record. The album is very consistent with the band’s sound and its surreal atmosphere is what
truly captivates the listener. Charnow’s lyrics are very personal and introverted on most of the tracks, which probably stem from her recent personal issues. The happy electronics often contradicts the darker emotional lyrics, which causes some tracks to lack a certain emotional punch. The album may seem repetitive at times, but the spacing is well-done overall. Both surreal dream-like qualities and jump-heavy characteristics can be found on III. This album brings out a lot of classic features of Shiny Toy Guns, but the sound is a lot more mature than previous records. III has more grown-up themes and real emotions than the Grammy nominated We Are Pilots, yet it lacks the musical cohesion of this record. Overall, the record is an enjoyable experience, which provides a surreal escape from the harsh day-to-day reality of our lives. v

Promethius By Kimberly Martinez Prometheus takes place in the year 2089, with a group of scientist and archaeologist discovering behind the rocky mountains of Scotland, ancient drawings of people pointing towards the sky at a constellation of stars. They do not find it to be coincidental that in other cultures in different parts of the world, very similar drawings have also been found to the one recently discovered in Scotland. Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and her boyfriend Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Greene) together interpret these findings as an invitation to a new world where they might find answers of how humans took form on earth. Luckily, their theory catches the eye of the very wealthy, Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), who decides to fund their expedition to the moon LV- 223 aboard the USS Prometheus. On board, as the crew hibernates through the trip and the ship travels at light speed, David (Michael Fassbender), an android, pilots the ship as he learns new languages
and observes very disturbingly the dreams of Dr. Shaw. The team arrives to their destination in the year 2093 to find a structure near where they landed. Ecstatically Dr. Shaw and her boyfriend Charlie immediately decide to scout through the place, but are immediately reminded of their place in the expedition by the heartless, or though it seems that way throughout the film, MerDavid the clone, emotionless as he is, carries out his own wicked little experience on the Prometheus... edith Vickers (Charlize Theron), daughter of the now deceased Peter Weyland. danger the whole crew as spiraled down series of events unleash in and around the ship; some of the crew goes missing, and before no time the discovery of the plague contained in the found structure is unveiled. Very quickly, it is realized that the harmonious place Dr. Shaw was expecting to find is not harmonious at all but the complete opposite. The generous Creators she was hoping to find are soon found to have had a treacherous plan, a plan that would have been carried out accordingly if it had not backfired on them first. Religious views, individual morals are tested, and the endless bloodshed continues as they all struggle to survive and regret the idea of traveling towards the unravel of their creators. Seems to be that there is a reason why some questions are left unanswered, because the answer that may be discovered may well be the answer that many are not ready for. Although an enthralling and worth-while film to see, it is not for those disturbed by very visual blood scenes, but for those with curious minds, do enjoy. v

Quesadillas

~ 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil ~ 1/2 medium onion, chopped ~ 1 clove garlic, minced ~ 5 medium mushrooms, cleaned and sliced ~ 1 large handful of fresh baby spinach ~ 1 whole wheat tortilla ~ 1/4 cup shredded pepper jack cheese ~ Salsa and/or sour cream
1. Heat oil in a skillet and cook onions over medium heat until soft, 5 to 7 minutes. 2. Add the mushrooms and garlic and continue to cook until caramelized. 3. Add spinach and cook until wilted. 4. In another skillet lay tortilla in the pan over medium high heat. Layer tortilla with the cheese, then add spinach and mushroom mixture over one half. Fold when cheese starts to melt, and cook until browned. 5. Serve with toppings of your choice.

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt. Stir in flour, chocolate chips, and nuts.

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Cook bacon, drain fat, crumble or chop and set aside to cool. 3. In a medium bowl whisk together eggs and milk. Pour into pie crust, top with cheese, vegetables, and bacon. 4. Bake in oven for 50-60 minutes, until top of quiche begins to turn brown.

Should they be Seen?
When is the use of nudity a form of art, and when is it just plain pornography? The line seems to be very blurry, and debates will continue to generate controversy over the topic. Who can be the ultimate judge or definer of whether nudity is good or bad, an art form or not, when the topic is so subjective. To some it is very clear that nudity is a form of free expression and anyone who is against it is a narrow-minded person. Supposing the art department is allowed to have nudism for the art value, how will the freedom of expression of those who oppose it be protected? How will the people whose religion, beliefs, culture, or morals are against nudism be respected? What will be their alternative? Often times, conservative views are cast as censorship, while liberal views are considered freedom of expression. But who is to say that liberal views are not imposed on conservatives? Arguing that human bodies are beautiful and an artistic tool is not sufficient explanation to want to accept nudism in school. If we consider nudism as a form of art,
we have to take into account the artists’ intention in using nudity, whether it is to portray the beauty of the human body or to objectify it. Secondly, we have to consider whether the observer views the work as a piece of art or provocation. In the context of art education, we have to consider why is it necessary to have nudism in art? What is this obsession with making the human body the subject of works of art? It is not liberalism to objectify the human body. There is a whole movement against that and now we are going to allow that to happen in our school when students have done well without it. Art is broader than just painting human bodies. Nudism is not equitable with sex, but it can be used to objectify rather than empower individuals. It can make us more self-conscious of our bodies rather than liberate us. Nudism can have both positive and negative effects, but the point is that nudism has no context in an educational institution. It is not necessary and that is the only valid argument. If it is not necessary, then why have it?
We have all been in the sex education or biology class where someone snickered at the word penis or vagina. The teacher tends to get annoyed and tell the giggler to grow up. It is thought that laughing at human anatomy is childish, yet adults still approach the topic in a very taboo manner or avoid it all together. Recently, in the State Street Gallery, an artist was asked to replace a large portion of his artwork to accommodate the University’s no nudity policy. RMU is not the only college or university to not allow nudity in their art gallery, but still this behavior only encourages young people to think there is something to laugh about when concerning the human body. The Art Institute in Chicago, which all RMU students get in for free, has countless pieces of work with mild to explicit nudity. Schools in the area frequently take classes to the museum for a field trip. There, they will see art uncensored and unedited. Humans are naked under their clothes and a reminder of this will not corrupt young minds, but educate them and make them more aware. The Art Institute exposes youth to culture and other worldviews. Shielding youth from that only hinders their knowledge. There is actually still a piece of artwork in the

gallery that has subtle nudity. The fact that this artwork is up has not corrupted anyone or caused a mass panic. Actually, it has not changed much at all, other than the fact that students and the public are welcome to view a different outlook on things through the artwork. Institutions for higher education like to air on the side of caution and therefore they are more conservative than they would like to think. Universities and colleges have been notorious for having a very large number of liberal faculty and students, but the administrators are usually a bit more conservative. If schools are run by more conservative people, then progressive moves forward are less likely to take place. Do not misconstrue that being conservative is a bad thing, but both parties should keep an open mind. Artwork as old as the Sistine Chapel has nudity. There is nothing wrong with tasteful nudity. It is a human in its purest most vulnerable state. Artists use nudity to express innocence, vulnerability, and other emotions. This should not be censored due to the fact that children giggle at the human form. If we did not hide it from them, maybe they would not laugh.

RMU'S NEW
Online Registration By Kim Martinez Robert Morris recently launched its new technique for students to register for classes, online. Before it would be that you would got down to the Academic Advising on the third floor, meet with your advisor, sign for your classes, and then the first week of the new quarter you’d search for the advisor and sign the official schedule. Now, with a link via email from the advisor you look over the schedule and submit it to register for the new classes. Of course, because it is a change to the usual class registration, students reacted differently to the new system put in place. After talking to a couple students around the Chicago campus, three different reactions were received: Those who liked the new way to register for classes electronically, others whom believed it was inconvenient, and those who felt indifferent about the new process. One of the students whom was talked to about the new arrangement in place, Andres Garcia, stated “ I like how easy and the little time it takes to register for my classes online and from where ever I may be.” Because registration is online students have the flexibility to register from any part of the country or world,
if necessary, or from the comfort of their homes. An adverse reaction though, was received from a different student at RMU regarding online registration. Steven Garofalo on the other hand exclaimed, “Registering for classes with the advisor was more convenient for me because any questions I had or changes I wished to be made I received an answer or feedback from them instantly. Now if I want to register for the classes at a given moment but need to email or visit with the advisor first with any concerns it takes a bit more time for reassurance.” Then there are those that feel apathetic to either way of registering for classes due to the fact either system put in place works to register. If one of those, as long as registering for classes can be done in a timely manner, then any arrangement made by RMU to register for classes is accepted openly. If this is of any concern for any student at RMU, be advised that before making a decision on submitting the class registration form online, that help is sought from the assigned advisor with time so that all questions may be answered. v
