ACCOUNTING FOR THEIR FUTURE

Nationwide, student loans outpace credit card debt, and at Robert Morris, a school built around its renowned accountancy program, that number cries out for an accounting of a special sort. So Carol MacPhail M'88, who chairs RMU’s accounting and taxation program, has joined with the accounting faculty to develop a first-of-its-kind faculty-founded scholarship program to put fresh scholarship dollars into the hands of accounting students.

The plan is simple: for every dollar MacPhail’s faculty colleagues put forward to create the Accounting and Taxation Legacy Endowed

Scholarship Fund, she and her husband, Doug MacPhail ’74, have matched the amount. The hope is to inspire alumni and other

stakeholders to create a large enough sum to generate income that will help promising students live up to the promise of a career in accounting. So far, the effort has raised roughly $30,000. They’re going to need more.

“Students at RMU do not have it handed to them,” says MacPhail. “Nearly every student in the accounting program has a part-time

job. Some are working 30-40 hours a week. I am overwhelmed by the needs of the students and their efforts to earn their degrees.”

As Dave Hess, a practicing accountant and professor at RMU puts it: “The Robert Morris profile is hard-working kids who don’t have a

lot of money.” Many of them are students like Kyle Neff, a fourth-year accounting major from Johnstown about to enter the master’s

degree program. He’ll carry $45,000 in student debt into a new life. In years past, college graduates spoke of a new car, travel, or money down on a house. Today, notes Hess, college students “leave with debt that is life-limiting, life-deferring.”

MacPhail says the dilemma is poignant. A career in accounting is a ticket to professional fulfillment and financial success, but getting that ticket punched is now more costly by a factor of one academic year. In the wake of financial scandals of the previous decade,

licensing boards in most states, including Pennsylvania, upped the number of credits needed to become licensed as a certified public

accountant. Instead of the usual 120 credits to graduate, RMU students seeking to become CPAs now need 150 credits— effectively

adding a fifth year to their studies.

That CPA status is what made MacPhail’s life. As a partner in the global public accounting firm of Deloitte LLP, she became one of the

pioneers of women in the top ranks of Pittsburgh’s business community. Like so many students at RMU, hers was the first generation of her family to earn a college degree and the standard of living that comes with it. “I grew up in a house where my parents often had to

borrow from my grandparents to get through to the end of the month,” she says. “I have had a very fulfilling life because of the accounting profession.”

Accounting is the foundation on which RMU grew from a small, regional college to one of the schools of business with the coveted accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. This year, it added a second-place win in a case competition sponsored by the Institute of Internal Auditors and the Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs.

One key to that win was a prototypical RMU student: Zachery Thompson came to RMU as the first generation of his family to attend a

university. His part time jobs have ranged from construction and making pizza to soccer referee. He says he discovered that accounting isn’t just “pushing numbers,” and speaks of a change that came over him after freshman year, where small class sizes and personal attention from the accounting faculty focused him on the goal of getting somewhere through critical thinking. “It’s helped me with where I wanted to go,” he says.

He’s the student RMU is aiming for, says Dave Hess: “They create the culture from which excellent results can be expected.” Those are the same students, adds MacPhail, who could use the boost she is seeking from alumni and friends for the Accounting and Taxation Legacy Endowed Scholarship Fund.

GETTING WITH THE PROGRAMS RICHARD ARCHER ’83 It was 1979 — the Pirates and Steelers were champions, the music was disco, and Richard Archer '83 was a kid from the Beaver Valley who showed up at Robert Morris in search of a business degree. Steelmaking was hitting a downturn and America’s "malaise" was just dawning, but business, says Archer, "was something that would always be around." He had a hunch about computers, and majored in information systems. Entering the computer age at the end of the rotary phone era evokes some quaint memories of just how new — and rare — that technology was at the close of the 20th century. "One of the big challenges was getting to the computer lab and waiting in line to use the terminals," he recalls. Students learned COBOL, a business-oriented software program developed by the Defense Department 20 years earlier. There were three major lines on campus in those days: the cafeteria, the pay phone at the end of the dorm hallway, and the big Prime computer tucked away in the library.

Along with the computer, there was another rarity on campus: a young woman who was just breaking into the geeky world of programming. Richard’s high-school sweetheart, Lynn Tucker Archer '83 was destined for her own degree in business and information technology, and a romance framed in kilobytes. The pair left Robert Morris for good-paying jobs in the world of Pittsburgh business and a life together as a married couple. Lynn started working with IT companies, and after their first child arrived, she went on to take an advanced degree in education and moved her career into the world of academia. Richard went on to work with Mellon Bank and today is an executive at KPMG, one of the Big Four accounting firms. And he doesn’t have to wait for a computer terminal. He has one at his desk. Each of their four kids has a laptop too, and several tablet computers are to be found around their Franklin Park house, as are six smartphones with as much memory as the old Prime computer now long gone from the Robert Morris library. "We have a programmable thermostat," he laughs. He also has a deep loyalty to RMU. Together, Richard and Lynn are members of the President’s Council of annual donors. Richard serves on the Board of Visitors of both the School of Communications and Information Systems and the School of Business. "I want the university to stay viable," he says. "I want to see it help others as it helped me. You don’t do it all by yourself." Companies such as KPMG depend on a steady flow of young employees trained in business skills and, most importantly, taught how to think critically when confronted with a challenge. "The people that will make KPMG successful, the people that will make our country successful … they happen because of the Robert Morrises of the world."

Now, 31 years after graduating to a business world where complex information is a few taps away on a keyboard, Richard Archer is moving forward and giving back, and it all started with computer programming software that dates to the Cold War. But even though its origins are in computing’s Paleozoic Era, COBOL isn’t quite the fossil you might guess. "Believe it or not, there’s still a demand for it," says Richard.

FINDING A NEW HOME, REMEMBERING THE OLD R. Kamau Njenga was born and raised in Kenya, and his family moved to the United States in 2006, when he was 13. They first came to Detroit, but found it to be less safe than they had hoped, so they moved to Ephrata, Pa., near Lancaster. A shy student in his small high school, Njenga joined the track and field team, excelling in the triple jump.

Robert Morris offered Njenga an athletic scholarship, as well as a merit scholarship and the Rande and Georgia Somma "Integrity First" Scholarship for a business student. He is working on a combined B.S.B.A. in management and M.S. in competitive intelligence systems, with the aim of becoming a business analyst. Njenga also is extremely involved in campus organizations, becoming a class officer and joining the Uzuri Think Tank and Colonial Leadership Academy. As a class officer, Njenga teamed up with other organizations to raise money for breast cancer awareness. He also recently completed a successful internship with Enterprise Rent-A-Car in which his group ranked first internationally in sales. Last year, Njenga had a difficult decision to make when the university eliminated its men's track program as part of an athletics program reorganization. While all affected athletes' scholarships were still honored, Njenga strongly considered transferring to another university to continue his track career. "However, deep down, I looked back on how much I had grown in my faith, character, and experience at RMU," he says. "My life had changed, affirming the school's slogan. RMU won my heart that day because it got personal. Nowadays, all I want is for others to sincerely experience their 'Change a Life' moment at RMU."

This year as a senior, Njenga volunteers as an assistant coach and social media intern with the women's track and field team. He is also an active member of the Senior Class Gift committee. "I chose to be a part of the RMU Class Gift because I wanted to show that I care," he says. "My life’s motto is to leave a place better than I found it. I've heard alums say, 'That wasn’t here when I was a student!' I want to be the reason people say that. " Njenga’s mother is traveling back to Kenya to spend Christmas with their large extended family, and he has been saving money in hopes of joining her on the trip. It would be his first time back to his native land since the family moved here almost nine years ago. Both parents are from big families, and while he stays in touch, he's eager to see the relatives all together again, face to face. "I am named after my grandfather on my father's side and I would love, more than anything, to see him and share time with him," Njenga says.
