A HELPING HAND FOR STUDENTS Paul E. Block M’87 has built a career around giving back.

Nonprofits are more than half of his clients at Albanese Sinchar Smith & Co., the North Huntingdon CPA firm where he is manager of the tax department — the others are individuals, estates, and trust work. He has also been volunteering his time on various nonprofit boards of directors for more than 20 years.

“I see it as working from the inside out versus the outside in,” he says. “And it’s what originally got me interested in supporting students, by helping them pay for their education.”

That’s just what Block has been doing by giving back to Robert Morris University for 27 years, including the last 25 consecutively. His Paul E. Block Endowed Scholarship generates around $1,000 annually to help deserving RMU students. “I get regular updates on the scholarship and who the recipients are, and I’m always excited to get a thank you from them,” he says. “It really shows how every little bit helps.”

After earning a B.S. in economics from Allegheny College in 1975, Block went on to get an M.B.A. from Duquesne University. But as he continued to build his career as a certified public accountant, he realized he wanted to build his knowledge of taxes, so he enrolled in RMU’s master’s in taxation program. “RMU was the only school offering the degree at the time,” says Block. “There is definitely a demand for it out there. You just don’t get that kind of in-depth training in an undergraduate degree.”

Block rates the M.S. in taxation program highly because it’s taught by experienced practicing C.P.A.s and professors who actually work in the area they are teaching. “I even took a couple classes I didn’t really need,” he says, “just because I wanted to learn more from the instructors. They were just so knowledgeable.”

For Block, the program provided exactly what he needed for his career. “It was very practical. The teachers had real work experience in the field, and they brought that information to the table, which was so important, because there are some things that you can only learn on the job.”

Today Block continues to build on more than 35 years in the nonprofit and financial planning arenas, with experience in individual income tax, retirement, estate, charitable and investment planning. He also continues to serve on boards for places like the Animal Rescue League, the Tamburitzans, River City Brass Band, the Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows Program, and the Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery (P.O.W.E.R.).

Knowing what he does about the university’s programs and faculty, Block says he would highly recommend RMU accounting students to anyone. “They are well taught and understand the value of hard work,” he says. “After all, life is a learning experience itself.

And once you figure out what you want out of life, you’re going to have to work for it.”

HELPING OTHERS AND GIVING BACK Ever since she was a child and watched nurses care for her little sister, who was born prematurely, Ally Greenaway has been determined to become a nurse in a neonatal intensive care unit.

Thanks to instruction from internationally recognized faculty, hands-on experience in clinical settings, and the generous support of RMU donors, she is fulfilling her lifelong dream.

“I never thought as a rising senior I’d be this far down the path to my chosen career, but I am,” Greenaway says.

While researching her college options, Greenaway took a tour of RMU, and once she saw the simulation lab in the Regional Resource and Innovation in Simulation Education (RISE) Center, she knew RMU was the right university for her. She earned a merit scholarship and received financial aid, just like 83 percent of RMU students. The staff at the VETS Center also helped out, since Greenaway’s father wanted to use his G.I. Bill benefits to help fund her education.

RMU’s excellent academic reputation is what attracted Greenaway, and the university has not disappointed. In addition to her classroom studies, she gained immersive experience in the RISE lab, networked with medical professionals, and recently earned a coveted position at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC as a care attendant. “I don’t think I’d have my job at Children’s Hospital without the experience I had at RMU,” she says. “The hands-on experience, the faculty, and the lab really prepared me for the clinical setting, so when I went into the hospital I was familiar with the setup of the room, the equipment — everything.”

From day one, Greenaway immersed herself in all the campus had to offer, from the deep and meaningful friendships with her sorority sisters in Delta Zeta and the excitement and school spirit of each Bobby Mania celebration. This August she gained experience in a very different setting — the barrio around Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. As a student in an RMU-sponsored service-learning course, Greenaway assisted at the health clinic and conducted in-home health assessments for a Nicaraguan family. “Four people shared one bed in a home with dirt floors and minimal food, but when we asked them what they needed, they said, ‘Nothing.’ They taught us not to take things for granted and to be thankful for the things we have.”

Greenaway says gratitude for her experience at RMU led her to help launch Student Philanthropy Ambassadors on campus to create a culture of giving among students.

She is co-chair for her class and will help create two events this year. Greenaway is also leading the fundraising for the class gift, which will provide a scholarship for a student to hold an unpaid internship.

“I love it here, and I almost don’t want to graduate,” she says. “But it’s amazing to know that in a few months, I’m going to achieve my dream.”

THEY SEE THE BENEFITS EVERY DAY Professors who care. Mentors who help students to follow their dreams. Robert Morris University has long promoted the personal connections students enjoy with faculty and staff. To demonstrate how much RMU’s faculty and staff believe in the university’s mission, consider the widespread and growing level of charitable support they give back to their place of employment to help change students’ lives.

Faculty and staff at Robert Morris have contributed more than $1.8 million in donations to the institution since 1979. And the share of employees who make a donation has risen substantially in recent years. For FY 2014-15, a total of 288 faculty and staff members — 48 percent, or nearly half — made a contribution to the university, many through voluntary monthly payroll deductions. Their generosity added up to almost $224,000 to improve the quality of the university’s offerings. Compare that to FY 2005-06, the first full fiscal year under former president Greg Dell’Omo’s tenure, when only 12 percent of the faculty and staff made a donation to Robert Morris University.

“We have an extremely generous faculty and staff in this university,” says Kim Hammer, J.D., vice president for development in RMU’s office of institutional advancement.

“They always rally to make sure our students are taken care of.”

Dave Synowka, Ph.D., is now in his 26th consecutive year of making a contribution to the university, a streak that puts him at the top of the list for annual giving. Synowka, a sport management professor and head of the department, is a member of the President’s Council, the top tier of supporters who give at least $1,000 per year to the university. He has used part of his annual contributions to establish a scholarship fund in his own name; a committee of sport management alumni pick the student recipient of the Dave Synowka Scholarship.

“For me the top priority at Robert Morris University has always been students,” says Synowka, who came to the university in 1978. “Trying to help them grow, personally and professionally, and creating a positive culture of relationship-building and understanding the importance of giving to others.”

Mary Gerard M’05 is another dependable donor, now in her 16th straight year of giving to RMU. Gerard, the assistant director of alumni relations, first began working at Robert Morris in 1997, making student ID cards part time while raising her children. She later earned her M.S. in nonprofit management from RMU, and each of her three children have studied or are currently enrolled at the university thanks to its tuition waiver program for staff and faculty and their dependents. Mary’s husband, George Beidler ‘74, is also a consistent and generous donor to his alma mater.

“I like supporting our students because I’ve worked with them on the Class Gift program and seen their passion for the things they believe in and want to support,” Gerard says.

“And I understand that I’ve been very blessed working here, because it’s paid for my education and my children’s educations too. The university has given that to me, so my children don’t have the same college tuition debt that we know a lot of other young people have.”
