AN ALUM WITH ENERGY ROBERT STOVASH When Robert Stovash '61 was growing up in Bethel Park, he never imagined one day he'd have friends in places like Belgium, Italy, and Ireland.

Today he and his wife, Eileen, have close ties with people all over Europe, thanks to his 26-year career in international sales with Consol Energy. "I traveled to Europe at least 10 times a year, two weeks at a time," he says. In the early 1980s, he and Eileen moved to Brussels, Belgium, and stayed there for two and a half years while he set up Consol's first overseas sales office. "We enjoyed it very much, and we still get back at least once a year to visit friends and customers all through Europe."

Right out of high school, Bob decided he wanted to get a degree in accounting, and as soon as possible. His family had a heritage of

hard work deep beneath the hills of western Pennsylvania; his father, grandfather, and even his younger brother were members of the United Mine Workers of America. "It's hard work, and my father wanted me to have a better life," he says. "I will always admire the

miners, and I'm proud of my heritage. But I wanted something better for myself." So while working during the day as a proofreader for Ernst & Ernst (today Ernst & Young), he took evening classes at the old William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. "I liked Robert

Morris's program because of the length of the program and the school's business reputation," he says.

In 1963, while serving in the Army reserves, he joined what was then the Consolidation Coal Company in its controller's department, and became assistant controller. After 14 years, he moved on to the international sales department, where he spent another 26 years calling on utility companies all over Europe and northern Africa. He retired in March of 2003.

Today Bob and Eileen split time between their home in Pittsburgh and another in Orlando. They have two grown children — a son, Robert, who has his own law firm in Orlando, and a daughter, Janice Veith '84, who works at PNC Bank. Janice's daughter, Mandy

Kotz '06, graduated from RMU with a degree in hospitality and tourism. Several other relatives also have earned degrees from Robert

Morris: Tammy Davis Janero '91, Jeffrey Stovash '93, Dominic Janero '93, Linda Yonish '04, Kerry Veith ’07 M’07 and Mark Weil '13.

"Over the years, we've developed a pretty close association with the administration and some of the faculty members," says Bob, "and those relationships have been a big part of my other family members attending Robert Morris."

Bob and Eileen have always been steady contributors to RMU, and recently they set up the Robert and Eileen Stovash Endowed

Scholarship. "We always made small donations over the years," he says. "And when we learned we could roll all our past contributions into a scholarship fund, we knew that was something we wanted to do." In all, the Stovashes have contributed more than $90,000

toward their scholarship fund. "We wanted to give students the same kinds of opportunities that we've had. We got so much out of the university, and we wanted to help other people, too."

STILL INSPIRING MARCO GIOVENGO “Seize the day,” “follow your dreams,” and “live in the moment” – It’s the kind of advice everyone hears, but how many people actually live that way, every day? Marco Giovengo ’12 did, say the family and friends of the late Robert Morris University senior who died on March 16, 2012, just weeks before his graduation ceremony. He had muscular dystrophy and related health problems, but his mother, Donna Iannelli Giovengo ’76, says he didn’t let those define him. Rather, Marco strove to live an independent, successful, and in many ways ordinary life as a college student. And he loved every minute of it.

To thank the RMU community for helping their son enjoy such a rich college experience, Jude and Donna Giovengo created the Marco Giovengo Memorial Fund. Through several fundraisers and many individual donations, they plan to begin offering a scholarship this fall, to be awarded to a sport management major who demonstrates leadership and commitment to volunteering, just like Marco.

Marco arrived at RMU already having accomplished quite a bit. He was honored with several awards for his volunteer work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was in the band at North Allegheny High School and attended prom. Donna believed strongly that her bright, talented child should go to college, but she admits she was a “nervous wreck” when Marco left home to come to RMU. She was quickly put at ease. “It was the perfect fit. From day one, he just fell into place. The students just totally took him in,” Donna says. Marco required a ventilator, motorized wheelchair, and nursing support, and lived in a fully accessible apartment in Lexington Hall. “It gave Marco the privacy to expand as a young man, as an adult. He just blossomed there.”

Marco was very active in campus life. He pledged Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and became chapter secretary, was a drummer with the RMU marching band and pep band, and was elected a member of the 2011 Homecoming Court. He regularly attended practices and games of many RMU sports teams. “He always just wanted to be one of the guys,” says close friend Danny Bonaventura ’13. “He wanted to live a normal life. He loved the independence, he loved living on his own.”

Marco grew up loving baseball, playing in a league for kids with disabilities and attending many Pittsburgh Pirates games with his family. He had just interviewed for summer internships, including one with the Pirates, when he died.

The young man clearly influenced people who knew him, and many who didn’t. Two days after Marco’s death, a grieving Danny wrote a blog post about his friend, describing a passionate and courageous person who talked trash during video games, always cheered for the underdog, and readily told friends “I love you.” The touching tribute spread rapidly around campus, with at least 3,000 views. At the funeral, mourners included fraternity brothers, bandmates, and sports teams. “We thought they were all inspiring him so much, and they all told us how he inspired them,” Donna says.

The RMU Sport Management Association has hosted two Pirates game nights in Marco’s honor, with a portion of ticket sales going toward the memorial fund. On October 5, more than 100 friends and family gathered on campus for a memorial event to dedicate a tree and bench near the band entrance to the stadium. A plaque reads: “Follow your dreams. I did.”

Kate Gatto D’12, director of major gifts, said RMU offers about 175 scholarships providing critical financial support for students. Marco’s fund has grown to more than $45,000, enough for an endowed scholarship in his name next year. “A scholarship makes a lasting impact on our campus. It’s something that is really permanent and a legacy,” she adds.

Danny says he believes Marco would be thrilled to be remembered in such a way. “Marco was never a person who was down for too long,” Danny says. “We’d talk about always staying positive and always moving on. As much as I miss him, I know this is what he’d want for us, to keep going on rather than mourning him. I want it to be like we’re celebrating his life as well.
