Branch Circular No 609

June 2011

Conference Edition

1

Dear Shipmate Branch Secretary, What a great conference we had in Plymouth. The National Chair has given a good account so I will fill in some details, for those who were unable to be there. The Guildhall was a very sumptuous venue, to suit the important business in hand. The conference was opened by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth and Rear Admiral David Steel gave the keynote address. He reminded the delegates and observers that the Royal navy was facing a tough time with redundancies and called for the RNA’s help in making the transition to Civilian life for these boys and girls as easy as possible – what is now know as the Shipmates Campaign – which I will brief on in an upcoming circular. The National President, Treasurer, Chair and Vice Chair made their reports, with good tough questions from the floor. The morning finished with the Mindworks presentation on the new Corporate image and examples of the new materials. The Member-get Member campaign is easy to understand. The idea is that we all try to recruit one new member each this year. Each branch will be sent in the next few weeks their box of materials (Branches at Conference have already received them). Please put up the posters in your local pub, club, church hall, Legion or shop, with your contact details. Guidance on this and the new image will be sent with this Circular in a smart document called ‘Brand Guidelines’ – please pass around the branch and show to your PRO and Chair. All the new letterheads etc will be available to download on the new website which we hope to go live within 2 to 3 weeks. Each Area has been given a Member-get-member pull up banner for events and meetings. The afternoon saw the debate on motions with the results as follows: • • • • • • • •

National Council motion – Passed Branch motion 1 – Withdrawn Branch motion 2 – Failed Branch motion 3 - Withdrawn Branch motion 4 – Passed as amended to take a report next year before final decision. Branch motion 5 – Carried Branch motion 6 – Failed Branch motion 7 – Carried

The results of the raffle are announced later in the circular, well done all £4,000 raised for the Charity Fund, BZ. The Gala Dinner was fantastic with over 350 attendees – great entertainment and a free miniature of Plymouth Gin each! The rededication of the National Standard at St Andrews went very well in a full church, but we didn’t want to see the new standard in the middle of Plymouth Sound in the middle of a Force 9 gale, so cancelled the Parade, which disappointed the Navy guard from HMS RALEIGH who wanted to be on the Telly. A big well done to Plymouth Branch for a really knock-out job. Finally I am delighted to announce that we have appointed a new AGS. Lt Cdr Andy Christie. He served for 24 years as a rating in the Stores Branch and was selected Warrant Office before being commissioned 12 years ago as an SD officer. He leaves the Navy shortly and was the best of a terrific field of candidates. Andy lives with his wife and family in Stubbington and joins the HQ staff on 15 August 2011. We have a really great deal on walk-in showers etc with Premier Bathrooms, see details in Daily Orders – it is a very good deal.

Best wishes from Semaphore Tower Paul Quinn General Secretary 2

Chairman’s Chat

Dear S hipmates My first comment is to offer a very sincere vote of thanks to the Plymouth Branch for hosting a very good Conference weekend. We had 122 delegates in total, the most we have had for some years, and this is, I’m sure, a testament to holding the event in a traditional Naval port. The evening events were well supported and the Church Service on Sunday proved to be a very good finale to Alan Robinson’s reign as National Ceremonial Officer. Sadly the weather led to the parade having to be cancelled but the Guard from Raleigh and the two Sea Cadet Units still turned up and the Guildhall was opened early to allow us all to enjoy some final banter before departing homewards. The young Sailors from Raleigh and the Sea Cadets particularly enjoyed this informal gathering – and an Ivor Dewdney pastie truck outside was a very welcome sight on a wet and miserable day. The Conference itself was rather a game of two halves. The morning session went very well and everyone was pleased with what they heard and saw. The marketing presentation from MindWorks was well received, even by some who had been quite critical beforehand, and most delegates went to lunch quite buoyed up by what they had experienced. They particularly appreciated the award by the National Council of Life Membership to the National President to mark his 10 years in office, and gave him a well-deserved standing ovation. He has been proudly displaying his new blazer badge to all and sundry since! The afternoon session was taken up with the debates on the motions, the first of which was withdrawn after the proposer realised the National Council opposed it. That was a pity because I felt it was worthy of debate. The remaining debates went the way that National Council had hoped for, and it was clear that the Conference was in a cautious and very considered mood. The delegates were frustrated by some of the speakers who sadly did not do their own cases justice. There is much more to proposing a motion than just uttering the words. Often the actual delivery counts for as much as what is being said if delegates are to be persuaded, and sadly some speakers had lost the confidence of delegates before they finished speaking. The acoustics in the hall did not help, but speakers who had sat through the morning session( and realised the problem), did not take it into account when at the microphone. The afternoon ended with a mini SODs opera led by Dave Tollerton and the Crosby Branch, including the singing of the very appropriate “RNA Song” composed and written by Dave himself. Overall, it was a successful Conference and the National Council feels that it has been given a clear mandate to progress on the paths presented to Conference. Our recruiting, re-branding and Shipmates campaigns have been given the thumbs-up and so we head into the coming year with hopes high for taking the RNA forward and improving its fortunes. The marketing packs for each branch are being distributed, with many collected at Conference, so I hope you will all join with me in spreading the word that we have a great Association which is alive and well and thoroughly deserving of a long and successful future. I have enjoyed meeting many of you over the past year and look forward to meeting even more of you in the year to come. Thank you for all your kind words and encouragement and I shall be working hard to live up to them.

Chris Dovey

The local branch was very pleased to welcome a party of Canadian Veterans including no less than three veterans of the Convoy Escorts who had enjoyed safe haven in Londonderry while their ships were made ready for the return voyage to Nova Scotia. The formal part started on Saturday morning with a memorial service at the Monument marking the final resting place of Crew members from HMS Laurentic, the First World War ship which hit two mines and sank off Lough Swilly in County Donegal. The Monument is in a peaceful graveyard with scenic views of Lough Swilly. The Newfoundland-Inishowen Initiative then hosted an excellent lunch in Fort Dunree and ensured all present were presented with a small bottle of malt whiskey. The Derry City Council hosted a pre-dinner reception in The Tower Museum and The NewfyDerry Convoy Bell was on display, much to the delight of our Canadian and Newfoundland visitors. This was followed immediately afterwards with the Commemoration Dinner held in the City Hotel. The Branch was pleased to welcome Cdr Peter and Lady Moyra Campbell, Capt Harry Harsch, Canadian Naval Advisor, Cdr Don Crosbie, Senior Naval Officer Northern Ireland and the Deputy Mayor of Londonderry among other guests. On Sunday the Parade and the Service in All Saints Clooney Church were well attended and included detachments from the Portrush Sea Cadets and the naval contingent of the local Combined Cadet Force. The Newfy-Derry Bell had been brought to the Church and was incorporated into the Act of Remembrance during the Service. The salute was taken by Cpt Harsch, Cdr Crosbie and the Deputy Mayor. Our Canadian visitors assured us they had enjoyed the Commemorations and they would be coming back, in force, in May 2013 when we intend to unveil a statue in memory of all who served and those who made the supreme sacrifice during the Battle of the Atlantic. We had a great day on 20 May, 35 Shipmates came along and thoroughly enjoyed themselves! ____________________________________________________________________________ 6.  Operation Neptune – Naval Tasks on ‘D Day’, 6 June, 1944. When the Second World War was raging, all those years ago, Here’s a story of a sailor that you really ought to know. Charlie Brown, an Able Seaman, aboard the LCI’s; That’s ‘Landing Craft – Infantry’, to carry and land our guys. They set out from Portsmouth, with two hundred fighting men; Their destination, Normandy, though they didn’t know it then. At Le Havre, a Hun torpedo, sank an Allied ship And while boats picked up survivors, all hell began to rip. Our ships bombarded beaches, with shells screeching overhead. A terrifying spectacle; over fifty miles it spread. The German guns returned the fire and Focke Wolfe’s flew in low And as we landed our brave troops, machine guns began to mow. The sea was full of bodies, but Charlie kept his head And recovered those were living, but had to leave the dead. Then, as he tended to their wounds and tried to keep them calm, Flying shrapnel screamed across the deck and took the Skipper’s arm. They chugged back home to Pompey; wounded men could do no more, Then with next wave of soldiers, set off for the French shore. For four long days they ferried, through bad weather and minefield, Alert for those in trouble, Charlie’s eyes were always peeled. His LCI was peppered with bullets, shot and shell And as soldiers died around him, he lost good mates as well. Charlie never won a medal, though brave and full of cheer And when the war was over, went home to those held dear. We owe a debt of gratitude to the men that paved the way, For victory in Europe on the sixth of June – ‘D Day’. Not many are still with us, in the year twenty ten. We trust the young will learn from history and be proud of them. Don Filliston. Plymouth Conference 2011 was a proud and special event for the West family when three members of it represented their individual Branches as Standard Bearers. Frank West a former Chief TASI from the Scarborough Branch, his brother John West a former Chief GI from Cork and County Branch and their cousin Albert West a former Chief ME (M) from Luton and Dunstable Branch. This proud Naval family who originated from Cork took time out to visit the Naval Memorial on Plymouth Hoe on which is recorded the name of Frank and John’s father CPO Telegraphist JC West who lost his life when he went down on the Cruiser HMS Bonaventure. A photograph (in the back of the circular.) shows the trio, from left to right; Frank, John and Albert. ____________________________________________________________________________ 8. A big thank you from Mindworks- Conference Weekend Thank you for your kind words and hospitality over the weekend. At the moment we are thinking that filming might take place in Portsmouth, and we would be happy to transport people to this location for filming if they were the right contributor and would be happy to travel. I'm looking to talk to some tattooed sailors, old and young, who'd be happy to talk to me about their tattoos, experiences of getting them, and where they had them done. It would be great if you could instruct anyone who might be interested in talking to me to contact me direct. I will of course be happy to call people back. Alternatively, if people are happier to contact their branch of the RNA and come through them, then I am happy to work this way too - though I'm sure the former will be simpler. We're planning to film this item in mid-June, so people will need to be available then, and the sooner I can start speaking to people the better really. I look forward to hearing from some tattooed sporting seamen very soon! 10

Welfare Brief Serving and former S/Ms do have families, so this month we look at support and respite care for children with special needs or disability of younger serving or former S/Ms. Other care for children may be available from previously listed local authority sources. What is a child? Children are generally defined as from birth to age 18 What is the need? A child with special needs or a disability presents serving or former S/Ms with extra responsibilities, additional stresses as well as very special moments. The pressures can be distressing but S/Ms are not alone and help/advice can be obtained from branches, SSAFA and RBL. What help is needed? This will vary from family to family. This can be purely financial and good advice regarding your benefit entitlement may be all you need. However additional costs can arise, such as needing room conversion to accommodate a child with a disability. Numerous charities and funds may be applied to and the local Benefits Office may provide assistance such as Budgeting Loans. Contact the Benefits Helpline, Disability Benefits on 0800 882 200 to discuss your options. However, as a Naval family, you may also be entitled to funding or grants from Naval charities. Many of these are listed on the Royal Naval Community Network website at http://www.rncom.mod.uk/Support_services/Charities.aspx

and associated specific web page: http://www.rncom.mod.uk/Support_Services/Special_Needs/Child_Special_Needs.aspx

Who provides what? There are a number of naval charities which will help S/Ms as well as their dependants. These have been listed previously. Those specifically aimed at children include the Royal Naval and Royal Marine's Children's Fund (RNRMCF) supports children of serving and retired RN, RM, QARNNS and Reserves personnel in need of care and help. Grants are given for education, equipment, home care, etc, where a social need is proven. Should the request be outside the Fund objects requests are passed onto other charities quickly, Call 023 92639534, email rnchildren@btconnect.com or look on web at www.rnrmchildrensfund.org.uk/ . The Forces Children Trust (FCT) specifically helps dependant children that have lost a parent or have had a parent injured whilst serving with the Armed Forces. Contact Denny Wise on 01737 361077 or use the web address of www.forceschildrenstrust.org/contact-us.html to contact them for help. The Catholic Church supports work such as that of IHCPT(RN) via the Pilgrimage Trust. This takes children of Service families with special needs to Lourdes for a week-long pilgrimage with respite care. Each child has a 1-to-1 helper who is from the Royal Navy or Royal Marines. In addition, each group has an appropriate health-care professional and usually a Chaplain. Groups exist around Plymouth, Portsmouth and Faslane. These pilgrimages provide faith activities and a great number of opportunities for fun. More details in DIN 2010DIN01-132 or contact Philip.sparke@consilium.europa.eu The Joint Service Hosanna House Group (JSHHG) gives the opportunity of a week-long respite care pilgrimage to Lourdes for ex-Service personnel or any of their special needs dependants. Hosanna House, a specially-adapted care home for Hosanna House groups nationwide, provides retreats. Further details are available by contacting richard.tipping@blueyonder.co.uk. Ship’s Office Pusser’s Rum Competition Outrageous dits concerning rum related fun may be entered for a prize of blue label Pussers Rum. Entries to: The General Secretary at Room 209, Semaphore Tower, PP70, HMNB, Portsmouth PO1 3LT.

PUSSER’ S RUM REKINDLES THE SPIRIT OF SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC London, June 21, 2011 – The spirit of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and the heroes of the 1912 Antarctic Expedition will be celebrated by a team of British Service personnel when they undertake an historic expedition in Antarctica later this year. On the day of the centenary - January 17, 2012 – the team of 24 Navy, Army and Air Force personnel will pause and toast their achievements and the memory of Scott’s British heroes with Pusser’s Rum, the traditional rum of the Royal Navy for more than 300 years. Pusser’s rum will be carried into the Antarctic in the expeditioners’ packs. Pusser’s Rum will also be the toast spirit at a pre-expedition dinner in December in the splendour of the Painted Hall at the former Royal Naval College, Greenwich, where Scott sat his Lieutenant examinations in 1888. Major David Jones, a member of the British Services Antarctica Expedition ( BSAE) says: “Scott would have undoubtedly enjoyed Pusser’ Rum as the rum ration was a standard naval provision (courtesy of the Crown) until it was withdrawn in 1970. As a naval officer, he would also have been very familiar with the traditional toasts associated with the daily rum tot”* While the expedition will seek to emulate the “Spirit of Scott”, rather than follow in his footsteps, as Scott’s primary intention was to “further the bounds of human exploration and knowledge”. For this reason the team will undertake cutting edge scientific research on the Peninsular Arm of Antarctica and explore regions where no one has previously ventured The BSAE2012 is seeking to promote the value and science of Scott while re-invigorating his memory among school children and young people. To these ends, the BSAE2012 is operating in conjunction with the International Scott Centenary Expedition under the banner ‘Spirit of Scott Expeditions 2012 (see www.spiritofscott2012.com) Area and Branch Updates Area 7
