The Russian Warship RFS Vice Admiral Kulakov enters Portsmouth Dockyard end of August
Branch Circular No 622 September 2012
1
Dear Shipmate Branch Secretary, Welcome to the September Circular, as the nights start to draw in and it is a little chillier in the evenings. You will be pleased to hear that I avoided debtor’s prison and got my daughter safely married too, on a lovely August day – as you can imagine she is now completely loved up! A packed Circular this month with loads of good stuff and a great membership offer! I am delighted to report that we have negotiated a 2 for 1 deal with Portsmouth Dockyard for RNA members, just show your RNA membership card before the end of December. This will more than pay for your RNA membership for a whole year ... details in the Circ ... Go for it!! We also have some places left in our extra HQ Open Day on 26 October please give Andy or Nigel and ring and book your place, boat trip and rum included. We also now have our Cenotaph tickets so please ring in for those too. You will interested to hear that S/M Chris Dovey has been re-elected as National Chair and S/M Keith Crawford as National Vice Chair. You still have time to send me your nominations for Chair of the Standing Orders Committee; please have them to me by Trafalgar Day at the latest. Also Branch Secretaries in 6 Area please let me have your nominations for DNCM 6 Area by the end of the month. A great piece of news this month from the Naval Base Commander in Portsmouth, after constant nagging by the GS he has been able to reduce our rent for the HQ offices by 90% (yes 90), saving thousands of pounds each year. Naturally we still need to pay utilities and phone line rental, but great news indeed. Don’t forget to get booking the Adephi for Conference 2013, it would be a great pity for your branch to lose the chance of such a good deal for a city centre hotel in Liverpool, so action soon please!!! I would ask you to very carefully read the Chairman’s chat this month and the Charter Challenge article in the Circ. This is a very important announcement and gives you the chance to have a hand and voice in the choice of the only memorial that the RNA is likely to commission. Also the National Chair is asking you to put your thinking caps on for fundraising over the next year or so, to get us a memorial appropriate for our great Association. Also at this time of year it is a good idea to start to think of any branch motion that your branch might want to put before Conference 2013. Some very important changes come from Branch motions, such as the ability for Associate members to act as delegates for Area and National Conferences, so get chatting!! The 2013 Conference will see the major Charter and Rule Review put to the Association. I hope to send the draft of the new Charter, Rules and Standing Orders to you within the next 6 weeks or so – going to the National Council, Areas and Branches all at the same time.
Our excellent Christmas cards and diaries are now in and you should get your orders in as soon as possible, order form at the back or contact Nigel. Also we have plenty of Jubilee certificates left for you, just give a shout and they are yours.
2
Finally, many of you will have bought one of Dagenham Branch’s excellent Jubilee pins. You might like to know that the branch sent pins to Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh – and received a lovely reply. A copy below for you to see. We will have made our own presentation of the Masefield poem to Her Majesty by the time this Circular goes to print, photos next time!! Lots to do in a busy term, stay in contact and the best of luck Yours sincerely
Paul Quinn General Secretary

Chairman’s Chat – September 2012 I write this to you in the week following the September National Council (NC) meeting at which I was elected unopposed as your National Chairman for another year. Keith Crawford was also reelected as National Vice Chairman after a strong challenge from NCM Scotland. Keith and I look forward to serving you all, and meeting many of you, for the third year in our respective chairs. It has been a relatively quiet period since I last wrote to you in the August Circular. In that Chat I mentioned the possible ideas for Conference 2014 in the Midlands Area and of including an event at the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) on the Sunday of that weekend. I can now confirm that NC has approved the No 8 Area proposals for the Conference venue arrangements and that all Conference accommodation, meetings, and evening activities will be at the Royal Court Hotel, Coventry, from 6-9 June 2014. The planned visit of the GS and myself to the NMA on 30 August had to be rearranged as the Chief Executive Officer of the NMA was called to an urgent meeting in London and we now have that meeting planned for Monday, 8 October. Included elsewhere in this Circular are details relating to the launch of Charter Challenge 2014 for the design and installation of an RNA Memorial at the NMA. I encourage all branches and members to get involved in this project that aims to place the RNA firmly in view at the NMA, which is now a major visitor centre in the middle of the UK for members of the Service and exService community, their dependants and supporters. These are the very people we are trying to attract to our membership ranks so it is important we put ourselves firmly before them at every opportunity. I have recently had a communication from the Irish Naval Association, which is very keen to establish strong links with the RNA. Their members made a great impression at the Biennial RNA Parade in Whitehall last year and they are already committed to having a strong contingent joining us at the Adelphi in Liverpool for Conference 2013. Such links with like associations is great for the RNA and we will be looking to join some of their events in Ireland in the future. Branches in 10 Area, a region that has close communication links with Ireland via ferries from Anglesey and Liverpool, have already taken part in INA functions in the past and it would be good to have wider involvement from the RNA in the years to come. Our bit for creating good Anglo-Irish relations. While talking of communication links I would like to ask you all to raise the Virtual Branches profile once again with your members. This has been an immense success, especially for shipmates who are either housebound or unable to attend branch meetings regularly. A Virtual Branch provides these members with a frequent opportunity to join in a dit-spinning session with similar shipmates by telephone, at no cost to them personally. While all those taking part have praised very highly the benefit that this initiative has brought to them, unfortunately the numbers involved are short of our target figures, and as a result the funding provided to keep the Virtual Branches going is under threat. While the intention is primarily to give help and support to vulnerable RNA members, more able members are welcome to join in to provide a bigger network of oppos around the country who can become another familiar voice on the line with like-minded interests in the Naval service. This “arm around the shoulder” comfort, albeit by more of a friendly voice in the ear, can make an enormous difference to many lonely and isolated shipmates. Please encourage any of your members who can spare an hour once a fortnight to help make their lives less lonely. A good laugh with fellow shipmates once in a while works wonders. Take care of yourselves, Shipmates, as we head out of the summer, and look after and support each other as only real messmates can.

4. The 2013 Annual Conference will be hosted by Area 10 and will held in Liverpool from Friday 14 to Monday 17 June 2013. The Conference will be held in one of the rooms of the fantastic St George’s Hall. It is a building in Neoclassical style which contains concert halls and law courts (no longer in use), and has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building. On the east side of the hall, between it and the railway station is St George's Plateau and on the west side are St John's Gardens. The hall is included in the William Brown Street conservation area. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner expressed his opinion that it is one of the finest neo-Grecian buildings in the world. In 2004 the hall and its surrounding area were recognized as part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site. Accommodation has been arranged in the renowned Adelphi Hotel at a minimal cost of £129 per person for three nights Bed Breakfast and evening meal, the Saturday night being a Gala Dinner. The Hotel is only a five minute walk from Lime Street Station, the main station for Liverpool and is a level walk. The hotel has limited car parking space so travel 8
by rail or coach is advisable. Liverpool is a very friendly City and you will find that you will be made very welcome where ever you go. Step outside the hotel and you are right in the City Centre, here you will find many shops, bars and restaurants and the newly constructed Liverpool One, one of the largest shopping venues in Europe, which consists of a large number of quality shops many only seen in London, along with many restaurants and cafes. Only a short walk from the hotel you will find the River Mersey, here you will get chance to see and travel on the famous Mersey Ferries, and a chance to take a forty minute cruise at a very competitive rate tour of the River and dock complexes. A must visit is the Albert Dock Complex, a series of 19th centaury warehouses now converted into offices ,Shops and restaurants and bars and the famous Beatles Museum. The Sunday Service will be held in St Nicholas's Church known in Liverpool as the Sailors Church, the Church overlooks the River and one which stands out to mariners leaving or returning to Liverpool. The parade afterwards will take place along the famous waterfront in front of the Liver buildings ending up near the Statute of Capt Johnnie Walker, famous for the Battle of The Atlantic, who after dining in the Adelphi Hotel with the officers of his ships suffered a heart attack (caused by overwork) whilst on his way home with his wife and died the following day in the Naval Hospital at Seaforth, Liverpool. Area 10 are working hard to make sure that the Conference in Liverpool will be one you will remember! Note; the booking form for the weekend is at the rear of the circular and also available on the RNA website!

Charter Challenge 2014
Introduction 1. The year 2014 is the Diamond Jubilee anniversary of the RNA being awarded its first Royal Charter. As one celebration of this milestone year the National Council (NC) have approved the installation and dedication of an RNA Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) at Alrewas in Staffordshire during 2014. At their recent September meeting the NC also confirmed acceptance of the provisional bid made at Conference 2012 by No 8 Area to host the 2014 National Conference, which will be at the Royal Court Hotel in Coventry, a single venue for all Conference events. This will be a Friday to Monday event similar to that in Liverpool next year, with similar inclusive facilities and costs. The NMA is just 25 miles from the Royal Court and Area 8 have also proposed that a parade and memorial dedication be held there on the Conference Sunday, rather than in Coventry itself. Coach transport will be provided from the hotel, and there will be time for many members and guests who have not visited the NMA before to enjoy a walk around the site to explore this excellent memorial venue, which is continually expanding. Memorial Design Competition 2. The NC is keen to ensure that all members and branches of the RNA have the opportunity to contribute ideas, suggestions, comments and even possible designs for an RNA Memorial, rather than have its own ideas imposed upon the membership. It has therefore been decided that a competition will be held, open to the whole Association, to submit possible designs, or ideas for designs, to HQ. The NC will set up an assessment panel to review the entries and extract what 9
they feel are the best to present to the full NC to consider. The NC will then recommend a final shortlist to present to Conference 2013 in Liverpool for the delegates to vote upon their preferred choice. This will leave a year in which to get the memorial created and installed ready for Conference 2014, a timescale which memorial masons that have been contacted assure us will be ample time. The National Chairman and General Secretary are visiting the NMA on 8 October to discuss the project with the CEO. 3.
Design considerations should include: a. b. c.
4.
Size, shape and material (granite, Portland stone etc) Type of Data and images to appear on the memorial Specifics regarding close areas around the memorial (pathways etc)
The proposed timetable is as follows, all dates in 2013 unless otherwise stated:
a. 1 Feb Final date for submission of design ideas. b. Mid Feb NC Memorial Assessment Panel meets c. March NC selects final designs shortlist d. End March Final designs sent out to branches e. June Conference selects preferred design f. July Memorial commissioned g June 2014 Memorial unveiled and dedicated 5. A prize of ÂŁ250 and two bottles of Pussers Blue Label Rum will be awarded to the member/branch submitting the winning design and that member, or member of that branch, will be invited to share in the unveiling of the memorial. Fundraising 6. The NC has already allocated a budget of ÂŁ50,000 towards this RNA Memorial project. This will be a memorial not only to all former RNA shipmates but to all former Naval personnel, irrespective of arm, branch or rank. All RNA members and branches, friends of the RNA, ex-Naval personnel and any interested Naval organisations are invited to share in this memorial by sending donations to RNA HQ. The more donations we receive the more impressive a memorial we can create. New techniques are now available which can provide special carved codes on memorials to make them interactive. It is hoped to include at least one such code to enable visitors to the memorial to see a list of all those donors who have contributed to its creation. Charter Challenge 2014 Launch 7. This note forms the formal launch of Charter Challenge 2014 and all those interested in being part of this project, as designers or donors, are now invited to make their contributions to HQ. If you are submitting a donation to HQ please be sure to mark your donation as being to Charter Challenge 2014. 8. The National Memorial Arboretum is now a major visitor centre in the UK for service and exservice personnel, with some 300,000 visitors a year currently, and increasing annually. For those who have not been there, or know little about it, the link http://www.thenma.org.uk entered into the address line of your internet browser will take you to the NMA website. 9. It is hoped that an RNA memorial will provide yet another opportunity to put the RNA in high profile with those members of the public with a strong interest in the ex-Service community, amongst whom will be many who could swell our membership ranks. Please support this project as positively as you can, and encourage any others you think might be interested to give their support too.

6. Brentwood Branch RNA “Summer ?” Garden Party The second event in our 30th. year celebrations was our “Summer” Garden Party. In view of Her Majesty the Queen’s Jubilee it was decided to make this a joint event. While our Branch first commissioned in October 1981, October 2011, with its established Trafalgar celebrations, would have left little time for anything else so July 2012 was chosen being not only the 30th. Anniversary of our standard, but offering time for other events. Saturday 14 July didn’t exactly dawn; it went from pitch black to dark grey with incessant rain. Even in the large marquee erected some days earlier, “the going was very soft”. Our hostess, who had kindly allowed us to use her gardens, provided us with tarpaulins to spread across the floor of the marquee on which our tables and chairs were placed. This was to save many a guest from suddenly finding themselves sitting much lower down than they thought they were, or being tipped out of their seat as the back or front legs drove into the ground independently. That morning in the continuing rain the brave souls setting up the marquee could be heard asking aloud if anyone else but them would actually bother to turn up. One of the best attributes of the British people is a sheer determination mixed with a generous share of blind optimism that “it will be all right on the day”. Happily for us, both guests and members shared these qualities and turned up very promptly, including a party of 8 Instructors and Sea Cadets. As usual our lady members had done us proud with the food and cakes, and the bar was well stocked. Soon everyone was mingling, eating, drinking, and eyeing up the raffle prizes, in a happy and relaxed mood. In view of the weather, dress of the day had been relaxed to casual/practical which proved a sound decision, as the best was yet to come. Festivities over, lower deck was cleared to assist a car stuck on the grass. Like a well oiled machine, (some truth here), we sprang into action in a manner that would have made a Field Gun Instructor cry and reach for his discharge papers. Advice was freely given and equally freely ignored and other than some new interesting furrows in our Hostess’s grass, no real progress was made. Then came a wise man bearing a long coil of rope. A tow was passed to a car on firm ground and the end was soon in sight. By now some of us looked like the losing entrants in a very poorly organised Mud wrestling contest, but a good Bath and Dhobi soon fixed that. The Car owner, a true gent phoned later to thank each of us personally, and then “called us round” for free wets, which was much appreciated. To our Hostess, a very kind Lady who sees her muddied lawns, and yet still remains our friend, our Branch says a very big “Thank you” from us all. 7. RNA Haverhill It is with great sadness that I report the Crossing the Bar of Stoker 1st Class, Harold Limeburner (89). Harold enlisted in the Royal Navy 25 days after his 18th birthday, and enjoyed 11
initial training in Malvern then posted to Chatham. His first ship was on the Capetown Castle which was in transit to Egypt via Liverpool running the gauntlet of German U boats as she made her passage. His career on Minesweepers took him to Italy and Malta and North Africa where he had many escapades and was highly thought of by all wherever he went. Finally he had done his time so was sent home via Malta and the South of France and onto Blighty, where he was demobbed. Harold will be sorely missed by his family and all at the RNA Haverhill, where he was an outstanding member and a dear friend to all. S/M Helen Beaumont – Vice Chairman 8. RNA Vancouver Island The picture was taken by the Hon Sec Harry Cossey at our annual picnic, Sunday August 26th. Our Branch Chairman said that, "Rig of the jig will be everybody wearing caps", and all trained sailors the equally well trained wives all obeyed. A great day was had by all with the help of a drop of the hard stuff and the equally superb food !
9. Spalding Branch - Games Maker at the 2012 Olympics Spalding RNA Branch Secretary Terry Day was a volunteer Games Maker at the 2012 Olympics, spending most of his time in the main thoroughfare of the Olympic Park in London, meeting, greeting, taking thousands of Photographs for the visitors and generally being an all round kind of guy. One day was spent checking the accreditations of celebrities entering the Olympic Stadium, on the sporting side at least 7 previous Olympic gold Medal winners past through, including such names as Mo Green (USA), Jonathan Edwards, Darren Campbell, David Hemery, Sally Gunnell, Daley Thompson, Lyn Davis and Tani Grey-Thompson as well as many other non sporting celebrities.
Terry - welcoming Spanish visitors to the Olympic Park.
Altogether a once in a lifetime experience, and an absolutely brilliant time was had by Terry, and he would like to thank his daughter Rhoda for putting him up in London and his wife Shirley for letting him attend the ultimate event.( Don’t think she wanted to watch 2 weeks of sport on the telly !!).
10. RNA Wallasey - Is this a Record? Or do you know differently! I have been reliably informed -that the Branch Secretary at RNA Wallasey (S/M Alfred Nelson) is on his 47th year as secretary for the branch. This got us all wondering at HQ, Is this a record ? 12
Maybe, there is someone out there who has been in an office who is able to beat this record, if so let us know at HQ and we will run a story!

12. Accessible Accommodation - Blackpool and St Anne’s I am writing from the Bond Hotel - we offer accessible accommodation in 2 locations on the Fylde Coast. We offer 2 hotels, one in Blackpool and one in St Annes. Both have very different atmospheres and are fully accessible with wet room style bathrooms. We provide specialist equipment (hoists, bed rails, raiser beds etc) as needed and can cater for a range of dietary requirements. Both venues offer a supportive, understanding environment where people living with disabilities can feel accepted and safe. We offer entertainment and cabaret each evening and fun and participation is expected! We have cabaret every evening and offer day trips out on our 2011 coach capable of carrying 8 people using wheelchairs. We also use this coach and other smaller vehicles to provide a door to door service to our hotels. We also have a hydrotherapy pool available for use by all guests located at our St Annes hotel. In addition to the accommodation, we can also provide personalised care packages, from 1 hour to 24 hour support if required. Obviously the flexibility of our care service means that we can cater for those who need a little more support through to people who require highly structured care. We can also provide respite where necessary and often have couples and indeed families visiting with 1 member of the party receiving care from our care team, leaving others able to relax and simply enjoy the company of the person they care for. We are able to carry out sleeping and waking watches where required and also provide social care if necessary. Our prices for care remain competitive and our carers are experienced, professional and above all else friendly and caring! For guests that wish to maintain their independence, we have 5 accessible holiday homes on the Blackpool Haven Park. The holiday homes are ideal for accommodating people who have recently become disabled and whose homes will need alterations. They are also ideal for the latter stages of rehabilitation. We also enjoy organising group holidays for many disabled support groups and their families/carers. We can offer substantial discounts to groups of 30 and more and up to 15% off brochure price for groups of more than 12 people. All groups have their own group co-ordinator; can alter menus, entertainment, days out etc to ensure the holiday really is tailor-made to your specifications and your group. 13
Should you have any queries, questions or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me on the landline detailed below. I can also arrange for a tour of our hotels and caravans should you wish to see the services we offer first hand. Marie Lord Telephone: Fax: Email: Web:

13. Nunhead Cemetery - War Graves Plot rededication on the 4 November 2012 After several years of discussion with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, a War Graves Plot containing nearly 300 men from WW1 has been renovated and will be rededicated on the 4th of November. The service is to start at 1pm and I would like to extend an invitation for any representatives from the Royal Naval Association to attend along with their standards, or if they wish to provide a wreath, which we would lay on their behalf. The cemetery in question is Nunhead (All Saints) in South East London Linden Grove, SE15 . There are nearly 300 men buried in this plot and there are 6 men listed as being from the Royal Navy. The intended itenery is, form to up behind the Cadets band, along with RBL and other associated regiments and standard bearers, and march around the cemetery stopping at the various sectors and ending besides the plot which has been renovated, where there will be a short service, followed by Last Post and two minuets’ silence. For more information and to register your attendance please contact, Eddie Barclay (former Royal Engineers) on 01303 872753. http://hidden-london.com/the-guide/nunhead-cemetery/

15. RNA West Lothian Branch West Lothian Branch, recent winners of the Briggs Rose Bowl has had a busy time over the past couple of months with participation in local and National events. In May the Branch was represented at the Diamond Jubilee Parade in Edinburgh and marched down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace where they were inspected by the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay before joining the 14
RN contingent for lunch and drinks in the main hall. The Officers and Ratings from the ships and establishments were engaging and entertained the RNA Vets with a few true dits’. Eleven members of the Branch also took part in Edinburgh’s Armed Forces Day in June and enjoyed some light refreshment in a local hostelry (insert picture attachment 1 please - WWII Veteran, Shipmate Jackie McFarlane) before joining members of the Edinburgh Branch (insert picture attachment 2 please - West Lothian and Edinburgh RNA Branch Members) for the main parade. Again it was an ideal opportunity to spread the work of the RNA and encourage those who weren’t member to join their local branch. Despite the weather a good day was had by all and members managed to stay dry in one or Edinburgh’s many watering holes. In July, Branch members came together to discuss a joint venture with the Livingston Branch of RBLS to place a Poppy Cross on every known war grave in the West Lothian area. This worthwhile venture is being coordinated by Branch Secretary, Shipmate David Liddell and has seen members come together and work for a common cause. Mr Secretary has also managed to press gang members of the Queensferry and District Sea Cadets to assist with this task which will commence two weeks before Remembrance Sunday. In August, sixteen members attended the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (insert picture attachment 3 please – Shipmates K Elliot, E Wilson, B McMorran, M Elliot, B Beech, A Clarkson and J McFarlane) and a fantastic night was had by all. The line-up of nearly 1000 performers included hundreds of musicians, pipers, drummers, singers & dancers who were as you would expect eclipsed by the band of HM Royal Marines. A lot is happening in West Lothian and you can keep up to date by visiting www.facebook.com/rna.westlothian or attending a Branch meeting at 1900z on the last Monday of the month (details on site).
16. Calling all World War Two Veterans – “Sods Opera Hands” Calling all World War Two veterans! (Concert Party Dames) I am doing a study into cross dressing as a form of entertainment for WWII troops, hoping to identify its effects– whether it was simply a morale booster, serving as a reminder of the women at home who were being fought for, or perhaps a hint that the fluidity of gender identities were changing. My aim is to collect anecdotal first-hand accounts of WWII entertainment which I will use as evidence and so if you are willing to help and answer a few questions – get in touch with myself, Emma, via email: emmalouise.jackson@hotmail.co.uk
17. Guess Where? An Establishment! Can you name the establishment and where it is? Please forward any other pictures to the HQ that you may have for ‘Guess Where’ so that we publish them in forthcoming Circulars. Answer again in next month’s edition. Last Month’s answer! Southwick House 15
18. ď ? Silver Surfers – Simple Surfing Tips! Using keyboard shortcuts can greatly increase your productivity, reduce repetitive strain, and help keep you focused. For example, highlighting text with the keyboard and pressing Ctrl + C is much faster than taking your hand from the keyboard, highlighting the text using the mouse, clicking copy from the file menu, and then putting your hand back in place on the keyboard. Below are our top 10 keyboard shortcuts we recommend everyone memorize and use. Ctrl + C or Ctrl + Insert Copy the highlighted text or selected item. Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert Paste the text or object that's in the clipboard. Ctrl + Z and Ctrl + Y Undo any change. For example, if you cut text, pressing this will undo it. This includes your Internet browser to find text on the current page. Alt + Tab or Alt + Esc Quickly switch between open programs moving forward. Tip: Press Ctrl + Tab to switch between tabs in a program. Tip: Adding the Shift key to Alt + Tab or Ctrl + Tab will move backwards. Something to think about, with all our new electronic technology! Not all thieves are stupid. GPS A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen. MOBILE PHONES I never thought of this....... This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet... Etc...was stolen. 20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago.' When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account. Moral of the lesson : 17
Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mum, etc.... And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text you ! I never thought about the above! As of now, I no longer have 'Home' listed on my cell phone.

21. ď ? Share the world's best kept auto secrets with your friends.
We all have been driving for many years... I would think I should have noticed the little secret on my dashboard that was staring me in the face the whole time...I didn't...and I bet you didn't either.... Have you ever borrowed a car and when arriving at the gas station wondered...mmm, which side is the gas filler cap? My normal solution was to stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look, try to see in the side mirrors or even get out of the car! Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of discomfort or injury. If you look at your gas gauge, you will see a small icon of a gas pump? The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the gas pump? If your tank is on the left, the hose will be on the left? If your tank is on the right, the hose will be on the right (see photo). It is that simple! Don't feel dumb, just go out and share the world's best kept auto secret with your friends.

22. ď ? Lord Kitchener Memorial Holiday Centre - Lowestoft The Holiday Centre is a registered Charity and is open from April until late October each year. Originally a convalescent home for ex-servicemen, the deed of the charity has since been varied to provide holiday accommodation exclusively for ex-servicemen and women and their respective spouses/partners. The day-to-day running of the Centre is by a manager, appointed by the Trustees, under the supervision of a Management Committee. Half board (room, breakfast and an evening meal) is provided in the mid-nineteenth century building which overlooks gardens and the sea. There are ten twin-bedded guest bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms (two now converted to walk-in shower-rooms) and furnished to a comfortable standard, befitting those who have served their country. There is a lift and three public lounges and meals are served in the air-conditioned dining room. The aim of the management is to keep the total cost for each visitor at or below the minimum income support level. This is only achieved by sponsorship from several major service charities who regularly contribute towards the cost each year: ABF The Soldiers' Charity (was known as Army Benevolent Fund) Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund Seafarers (was known as King George's Fund for Sailors) Their funds, however, have suffered from the prevailing low returns from their investments and the Holiday Centre has no reserve of funds of its own and to continue to provide the service is always looking for both practical and financial help My reason for writing is to make other Shipmates aware of this wonderful centre, which is in danger of closing. The manager, Steve Schofield and his wife Lorraine run it and they are really good at it. Steve is ex-Army but is very approachable, so please give him a ring for a chat if you would like any more information, his number is: 01502 573 564. Their website is:http://www.kitchener.lowestoft.org.uk/ Hoping you can see that this is a good charity to support, as several of Mansfield Branch members attend every year and it would be a shame to see it close. Yours aye, S/M Glyn W Johns Hon Sec.
23. ď ? RNA Bexhill Branch On Monday 20th August 2012 the Vice Chairman and Social Secretary, Shipmate Derrick Trew, sadly "Crossed the Bar". Derrick joined the Branch on 25th April 1994, becoming Social Secretary in August 1995. He took on the role of Vice Chairman in 2001. Both of these positions he held until 20th August 2012. He was very busy with the arrangements for our Trafalgar Dinner, to be held on Friday 19th October 2012, even though he was seriously ill. Derrick served in the Royal Navy from February 1942 through to 19
February 1955. During this time his service saw him onboard HMS Bulldog on convoy duty to West Africa and South Atlantic, HMS Hotham on Atlantic convoys and D-Day landings. He formed part of Naval Party 100 "Murmansk" North Russia W/T Station as a Leading Telegraphist. After this he served on HMS Lioness in the Far East sweeping Japanese minefields, then back to UK to do his PO Tel’s course and then on to Whitehall W/T Station. In 1950 he joined HMS Solebay in the Home Fleet. He then completed the Wireless Instructor Course before joining HMS Birmingham, Flagship Far East for the Korean War, finishing his time at HMS Ganges as CPO Tel. (W/I). As if this was not enough he joined the Police Force, ending up as a Chief Superintendant with the Metropolitan Police. Needless to say Derrick will be sorely missed by all of his shipmates at the Bexhill Branch, and all of us will do our utmost to make his last contribution to the RNA a first class evening. Yours aye, Fred Cayton, Hon Sec Bexhill Branch 24. ď ? RBL in partnership with Dementia UK Recognising the need to support the veteran community, the Legion has partnered with Dementia UK to provide a new community nursing service - The Royal British Legion Admiral Nurse Service. Now operating in Lancashire and shortly in the West Midlands, the aim is to roll out the service nationally over the next two years. The focus of the service is to achieve a better quality of life for those with dementia, their carers and families by ensuring they get the practical support and advice they need. The Legion currently employ three Admiral nurses in the Lancashire area including a lead nurse and have successfully recruited a lead nurse for the West Midlands are are recruiting two additional nurses for that area. The Legion's head of care services, Laura Morton, said: "Dementia has been identified as the next health time bomb with the number of sufferers worldwide set to double in the next eight years. "Studies have shown that caring for a person with dementia can be very demanding and carers are more likely to experience physical and mental stress. "One of the best ways to improve the quality of life for people with dementia is to support those who care for them, so we're delighted that we will be offering the Admiral Nurses Service to members of the Armed Forces family. "Fifteen per cent of those aged 65 years and over have care and support needs that the state doesn't currently meet. Combined with health spending cuts at local and national level, this means there are serious gaps in provision when it comes to supporting people who care for those with dementia." There are those out there in the Veterans family that we do not know about because their relatives do not like to talk about it, here is an opportunity to seek help. To be eligible for this service, the Legion beneficiary can be either the person with dementia or the carer. Further information and contact details regarding the West Midlands service will be published when available. Note; this service is only run in Lancashire and West Midlands at present. 20

If this doesn't make your dog salty, I don't know what will!! I remember standing on the foc'sle on a Morning watch weighing anchor with the smell of the North Wind whipping in from ahead and the taste of salt spray on my lips. The feel of the ship beneath me, a living thing as her engines drive her through the sea. The sounds of the navy, the piercing trill of the boatswains call, the clang of the ships bell, the harsh squawk of the main broadcast Tannoy and the strong language and laughter of sailors at work. The warships, sleek destroyers, fussing frigates, plodding fleet auxiliaries, menacing submarines, purposeful mine hunters and steady solid carriers. The proud names of the Navy's capitol ships, Ark Royal, Eagle , Lion and Tiger The descriptive names of destroyers, Daring, Battleaxe, Cavalier, and frigates, Active, Undaunted, Vigilant to name just a few. The military beat of the Royal Marine Band blaring on the upper deck as we entered harbour in Procedure Alpha. The pipe "Liberty men fall in" and the spicy scent and sights of a foreign port. Going ashore in No 1 uniform to meet the ladies and visit the watering holes of these foreign ports. My mates, men from all parts of the land, from city and country alike and all walks of life, I depended on them as they depended on me for professional competence, comradeship, trust and courage, in a word we were shipmates, a band of brothers. A loud game of Uckers in the evening with my messmates. My shipmate slinging my Mick for me coming aboard after a run ashore knowing that I would do the same for him. The surge of adventure in my heart when the calls of "special sea duty men close up" or "Away seaboats crew" were piped. The joy of hearing the call "Up Spirits" The sudden adrenalin rush when the "Action Stations" alarm blared, followed by the clamour of running feet on ladders and the resounding thump of watertight doors and hatches being shut as the ship transformed herself from a peaceful home to a deadly weapon of war ready for anything. The atmosphere of the ship in the darkness of night, the dim red glow of the nightlights and the navigation lights. Standing on the quarterdeck as "Lifebuoy Ghost" watching the sparkling phosphorescence from the screws as they constantly pushed tons of water astern of the ship, carrying us to our next destination. The "Watch on Deck" on a balmy tropical night in the South China sea watching the glorious sunset, and flying fish gliding for amazing distances across the surface of 21
the sea. Drifting off to sleep in a hammock, lulled by the myriad of noises large and small that told me that my ship is alive and well and that my shipmates were on watch and keeping me safe. The aroma from the Galley during the Morning Watch. Cheesy, Hammy, Eggy, Train Smash, Sh*t on a Raft and Figgy Duff The wholesome taste of Kai during the middle watch on a cold, dark winters night. The sound of the bow slicing through the mirror calm of the sea and the frolicking of dolphins as they darted in and out of the bow wave. Watching the ships wake disappearing back towards the horizon knowing that it will be gone in a short time and being aware of the fact that we were not the first or will not be the last to leave our mark on the water. The state of the art equipment and the orange glow of radar screens manned by young men in anti-flash gear using sound powered phones that their grandfathers would still recognise. The infectious feeling of excitement as we returned home again, the hugs and kisses of welcome from family and friends. The work was hard and dangerous, the going rough at times, the parting from loved ones painful but the robust navy comradeship, the all for one and one for all philosophy of the sea was ever present. The traditions of the navy and the men who made them and the heroism of the men who sailed in the ships of yesteryear. Now that I am home I still remember with fondness and respect the sea in all its moods from the shimmering mirror calm of the tropics to the storm tossed waters of the North Atlantic, the bright colours of the White Ensign snapping at the yardarm, the sound of hearty laughter. I am ashore for good now and grow wistful about my navy days, when I was young and a new adventure was ever over the horizon. Stamped on my brain is my Official Number and an anchor where my heart is. Numbers will never be the same again: Uniforms: Number 1s 2s 3s 8s 10s 10As Punishments: Number 9s, 14s Even as times change, and young matelots take over from old seadogs, some things will never change: The old days were always harder. The recruits always looked younger Official Numbers were always smaller. The waves were always bigger The girls were not as good looking in Pompey as they were in Guzz. Your last ship was always the best. If I haven't been there, it doesn't exist - or we blew it off the map. Only a sailor knows, I was a sailor once and I know. I look back and realise it was not just a job, it was a way of life. A life where shipmates were a family, never to be forgotten. I was part of the navy and the navy will always be part of me. HOW ANCHOR FACED CAN ONE GET ?
26. Salute to the 40’s – 15 & 16 September 2012 - Chatham HMS CAVALIER, The Historic Dockyard Chatham’s very own Second World War destroyer, will mark her own “Salute to the ‘40s” by firing a ‘broadside’ using all three of her 4.5” guns at 12.00 noon on Saturday 15th September, the first day of the Salute to the ‘40s event. The last broadsides fired from operational Royal Navy ships were by HMS LONDON as she returned to the UK before paying off in February 1982 and HMS ZULU on paying off in 1984. 22
Three rounds will be fired from A, B and Y guns on board HMS CAVALIER by the Historic Naval Gun Crew, a group of re-enactor volunteers who have assisted in restoring the ship’s guns and who will also re-create Captain’s Defaulters and bring the ship to life over the weekend of the Salute to the ‘40s event. HMS CAVALIER was one of ninety-six war emergency destroyers built for the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Awarded the Battle Honour ‘Arctic 1945’ for operations off northern Norway and in support of the homeward-bound Russian convoy RA64, CAVALIER later operated in the Western Approaches, undertaking duties which included the high-speed escort of the liners-turned-troopships RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth. HMS CAVALIER, together with an adjacent bronze monument is now the National Destroyer Memorial 1939-1945 marking the very special contribution made by these ships and the men who served in them. The destroyer is an important central display at Salute to the ‘40s on 15th and 16th September at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. ‘Life on the Home Front’ is superbly re-created with a host of enthusiastic re-enactors, civilian and military vehicles, a village square and encampments. The great line-up of 1940s-style singers, dancers and musical artistes will keep visitors entertained and those who come suitably attired in forties style can join in the parade of forties fashion each day. Tickets are now on sale with discounts for advanced purchases and Historic Dockyard 12 month ticket holders. With so much happening over the weekend the new two-day tickets offer exceptional value for money. Go to www.thedockyard.co.uk/salutetothe40s for prices and details of how to purchase on line, by post, by telephone or in person. Salute to the ‘40s is sponsored by BAE Systems and supported by Best of British Magazine and Kent Messenger Group. 27. Pensions and Benefits – If you don’t ask for it, you won’t get! An Evening with the Band of the RAF College Lincoln – 12 October 2012 Under the direction of Squadron Leader Chris Weldon, the Band of the Royal Air Force College Cranwell and Royal Air Force Swing Wing will perform their first ever combined concert in the Lincoln Drill Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 12 October. Although Royal Air Force Swing Wing is a wellestablished Royal Air Force ensemble with the Lincoln community, Chris Weldon (Director of Music) says “this will be the first time the full military band has performed together at the venue. Consequently, in this special Diamond Jubilee and Olympic year, we will be celebrating in traditional Royal Air Force style with some superb musical arrangements and entertainment for all ages.” Highlights of the programme will include Matthew Walker singing the music of Matt Monro, along with some stunning band arrangements from the film scores of Ennio Morricone. The concert will also feature the first performance of “Journey Through Europe”, which is a new musical arrangement taking the audience on a wonderfully linked musical journey across the continent. Music from the big screen continues with Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and the traditional Dambusters March, and of course no such concert would be complete without the music of Glenn Miller! 24

Public support for our deployed personnel and sending gifts at Christmas The MOD acknowledges that there is a significant desire among members of the general public to support our personnel on operations over Christmas and expresses its gratitude for this support and generosity. • Support for our personnel deployed on operations is always welcome, but the high volumes of unsolicited gifts and packages from the general public expected during the Christmas periods, although well intentioned, increases pressure on the in-Theatre postal system and logistic supply chain. Personal mail from family and friends can therefore be significantly delayed. • With less than 100 days to go until Christmas, the MOD is today launching a campaign to remind members of the public how to express their support other than by sending unsolicited gifts and packages. Details of the many ways to do this, including making donations to Service Charities, can be found on the MOD website: www.mod.uk/PublicSupportForOurServicePersonnel 32
