Branch Circular No 628 April 2013
1
Dear Shipmates (Secretaries and our on-line readers) Welcome to our April circular, just as the sun is starting to shine and things warm up. We had our first Open Day of the year last Friday, with a great turn out and a lovely day for the harbour trip. It was a nice mix of branches from Tewksbury, IOW, Hereford and Portsmouth. To some business first: • Conference is approaching, so please ensure that you have nominated a delegate and any observers, the form is at the back for the last time. • I hope that you have managed to discuss the annual report, accounts and the conference motions so that your delegate is aware of the branch view. • If you will need blue badge parking at St George’s Hall on the Saturday of Conference, please let us know now. • We need the President’s Trophies back now ready for Conference. • Thank you for buying tickets for the Main Conference raffle and the Rum Tub. • Before the Conference season and Summer Holidays beckon, please have a branch chat about attending the Biennial Parade, and see a note below about the Arctic Star. We have received a lot of requests for the Arctic Star application form. Here is some very important news: • • •
•
The Second Sea Lord is pleased to present Arctic Stars at the RNA Biennial Parade at the Cenotaph on 8 Sept. Please contact Gen Sec if you or a branch member is interested. Arctic Stars can also be presented at the Conference Parade at Liverpool on Sunday 16 June; the National President will lay a wreath at the Captain Walker memorial and present medals. I have had a long chat with the Navy Medals office about the time taken for applications to be processed and the medals to be issued – in fact a couple of branches have asked me to help speed things up – a most understandable request. Here is the info: o SPVA have been overwhelmed by the number of applications by veterans, the number of 200 surviving was banded about before the announcement. To date they have received over 1,700 applications from living veterans with loads more coming in every day. As a result they have increased the size of the team processing requests by 300%. o All veteran requests are processed in the order in which they are received. If you think you have a genuine case that the application should be accelerated then give the GS a ring. This will require a high level of support from hospice/doctors etc; even then there is no guarantee. Direct applications to SPVA will get nowhere. o Applications that have good supporting documentation are processed more quickly, such as service document copies, Ships served, convoys etc. Applications that need the SPVA to verify service, ships, convoys etc will take much more time. o Non-convoy applications require a lot of historical research and will take much longer. o SPVA have received over 10,000 applications from next of kin, which will all be done after the veterans’ applications have been processed. It is very unlikely that any NOK applications will be satisfied until well into 2014. Do contact the HQ if you have any issues or want advice about the Arctic Star. Info and forms at: http://www.veterans-uk.info/arctic_star_index.htm
I need to correct an item in last month’s circular regarding the Preserved Pensions under AFPS75, I incorrectly said that the minimum qualifying period was 5 years, this is not so, it should have read 2 years minimum qualification. Thanks to S/M John Bailey an HQ roll member for pointing that out.

A huge BZ to S/M Rita Lock for the organisation of the best Welfare seminar yet, a wonderful turnout of 60 shipmates from all over the country, and some really top notch speakers. I have been correctly bollo**ed by Saltash branch who noted in the Annual Report that Plymouth and Liskeard branches are mentioned as providing Phase 1 mentoring at HMS RALEIGH. Saltash branch have been involved from the outset and provide shipmate mentors too – please hand amend your annual report, and give them a pat on the back at Conference!! Those in the virtual branches who have e-mail address are pleased that Rita also sends them the Circular when she receives it, that’s another bonus for being in the virtual branches. Don’t forget if anyone else would like to join please contact Rita on rita@royalnavalassoc.com Rita says thank you for all the lovely letters and e-mails of appreciation.
Thanks – enjoy the sunshine (except in Scotland- enjoy the warmer rain) Paul General Secretary

Finance Corner
I thought that this month would be an opportune moment, with the spring/summer event fundraising season underway, to clarify a few issues concerning Charitable Collections.
12
•
Branches registering as charities do so under the Royal Charter, as their trust document, and must comply with it.
•
The charitable objects of the RNA are very clear; they apply to funds raised as the RNA. There is great latitude and do not need to be changed.
•
The core issue is that the person giving money must be entirely clear about where it is going. If an RNA member in RNA rig with RNA tin receives a donation, the person giving the money will make the assumption that it is going to be given in accordance with all 8
objects of the Royal Charter of the RNA. This would apply to RNA internal events such as raffles, dinners, days out, branch fees, general charity donations to branch charity fund. •
If however the RNA person in RNA rig has a collecting tin marked (say Lifeboats), the donor will make the assumption that it is going to lifeboats. This money does not have to be spent in accordance with the objects, but must go to the lifeboats. An RNA raffle that is for, say a youth group, may go that way, provided everyone is clear about where the money is going.
•
What is not acceptable is for branch funds raised under the RNA flag, to be voted to nonobject reasons. That said the objects are so broad that they give much latitude.
I hope that this assists Branches in complying with the regulations in this tricky area. If you are unsure give the General Secretary a ring. Now for the most important news of the month.... In order to look my best and charge my battery ready for Conference I will be taking Annual Leave in the sun from the 4th May until 20th May. See you at the Conference, Best wishes: Michelle
15. Guess Where? An Establishment! Can you name the establishment and where it is? Please forward any other pictures to the HQ that you may have for ‘Guess Where’ so that we publish them in forthcoming Circulars. Answer again in next month’s edition. Last month’s answer! HMS Cambridge

‘Sippers Shippers’ – The Last Ever Rum Issue really (unless you know different!!)
In the last Circular HMS Fife claimed to have the last Tot and Guess what......
And...........
Shipmate Brian Cox who is an HQ Roll member read the original ‘Tot’ article with interest. He recalls several 'funeral' events at the time but says his ‘dit’ is less spectacular but probably fairly typical of the day. The Navy had cleverly arranged the last day to be on a bank holiday weekend so that there were not many people on board anywhere. S/M Brian was serving in HMS Yarmouth alongside in Portsmouth. He was an LREM at the time with only the duty watch/fire and emergency party were on board of which, 6/7 were in the Greenies mess and he was duty LEM. The Rum Bosun for the day toddled off at 'up spirits' to get what should have been the messes half dozen tots entitlement. However, Brain and his shipmates were amazed when the duty PO and OOD dolled us out with a 15
full mess issue of 28 tots! The Bosun was not one to argue and he scurried off with the prize and zoomed down the Mess. As you can imagine there was much pleasure that afternoon and thank goodness there were no emergencies! There were a lot of dark mutterings about LE-FAN-U at the time..... Six months later Brian picked up his POs rate and enjoyed the new spirits arrangement of senior rates messes for another 20 years. He also remembers a ‘Jack’ cartoon in the Navy News at the time where the relieving bridge wing lookout one dark cold night said to his oppo 'you can nip down to the mess for a nice cold beer now'. Summed it up I suppose.

A Surprising Trip to the Superstore....
There was a small bit of confusion at my local superstore this morning. When I was ready to pay for my groceries, the cashier said, "Strip down, facing me." Despite, making a mental note to write to Tesco’s head office about Customer relations and the way in which I was spoken to at the till, I complied with her instructions. When the hysterical shrieking finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to my........ credit card. I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future. They really need to make their instructions to us General Secretaries a little simpler and clearer!

MoneyForce Website launched
Shipmates should be aware of the official launch of MoneyForce which is a new programme designed to improve the financial capabilities of members of the Armed Forces and veterans. The MoneyForce website www.moneyforce.org.uk provides easy to digest Armed Forces specific information to help personnel and their families plan their finances. The site is a terrific read and 17
comes highly recommended by the General Secretary to RNA members as it is not just aimed at serving personnel The site is easy to understand, free to use and completely impartial (there are no adverts or links to financial providers). It highlights the sorts of financial considerations that personnel should be making at different stages of their life. It contains the following: • Managing money – useful information on borrowing, saving, budgeting and spending, as well as planning for the future. • Your career – information about different stages of your military career – including pay and career structures, allowances, managing finance as you deploy, assignment in the UK or abroad and making plans for when you leave the Service. • Life and family – information on managing life’s challenges – setting up home, marriage, divorce, children, holidays, booking the RNA Conference. • Managing crises – useful information and guidance to help people through tough times • Tools – A Budget Calculator, a Car Cost calculator and a Credit Card calculator to help you make informed decisions and plan for the future. • Advice on debt and how to go about managing it.

HMS Venomous
Shipmates may able to assist Bill Forster who published a book about his Father’s service in HMS VENOMOUS, during the war. The ship was based in Londonderry while serving as an Atlantic escort during the Battle of the Atlantic and some of its crew were from Ulster or married Ulster girls and in this anniversary year I am updating the book and asking for others people with connections to her to tell their stories on my sites. http://www.holywellhousepublishing.co.uk/A_Hard_Fought_Ship.html and http://www.holywellhousepublishing.co.uk/Pilgrimage.html Bill is in contact with 90 year old Jack Bolton who came from Strabane and met his wife in Derry but would like to contact the family of: William J. ("Dolly") Gray who was described by shipmate Harry Haddon as a "likable Irishman with strong political opinions". He came from Belfast and was killed when HMS Albatross was torpedoed on 11 August 1944. He is seen here with Cyril Hely who is playing a ukulele. Can anyone help put Bill in touch with his family? Or suggest how he might trace them? 18

The Goldfish Club
The Goldfish Club was formed in 1942 for Aviators Rescued from the Sea. Initially we had many hundreds of members but our numbers have decreased since then and we presently number around 450. Qualifying for membership is very simple you have to have ditched into the sea from an aeroplane, balloon, helicopter or any form of flying machine and subsequently been rescued from the sea. Our members are mainly serving or ex-serving RAF/RN, a number of overseas members and a few civilians. We are very proud of our very few remaining WWII members. Each year we have an annual reunion weekend and this year we will be meeting in Torquay where the main event is a dinner dance at The Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. We have a number of RN members who are graduates of the college including the present Commander of the college. Holding the event there is especially appropriate in this the 60th anniversary of the RN SAR service. If you would like any further information on the Goldfish Club please visit our website www.thegoldfishclub.co.uk. Details of our forthcoming reunion can be found in the shortcast below.
27. HMS Queen Elizabeth Newsletter 5
HMS Queen Elizabeth has undergone some major advancements during the last three months, key of which was the joining of Lower Block 04 and the first two rings of Centre Block 04 to the Super Block 03 and Lower Block 02 over Christmas – this alone added over 10,000 tonnes to the dock. 19
In January at Rosyth the first MT30 gas turbine (Bob) was installed in Sponson 01 and is one of two gas turbines that will power the ship. The New Year saw the forward island (known as Upper Block 07) emerge from the build shed in Portsmouth ahead of delivery to Rosyth. This four storey high, 680 tonne unit will house the ships navigations systems and command centre. Over 30km of wiring and over 4000 pipes had been installed prior to delivery to Rosyth in February, and on 14 March the Secretary of State formally lowered the island into position on the flight deck shown in the video at this Youtube link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bJVMlvYUGY Moving across to Cammell Laird in Birkenhead; they completed work on the remaining two rings of Centre Block 04 in mid-March. The level of outfit on these two rings is very high and they have already been wired for power. They were lifted into place at Rosyth just a few days ago. In February the forward flight deck section was put in place which means we now have a flight deck almost the full length of the ship. Finally Lower Block 05 was lowered into the dock, meaning the entire lower hull is now in place. She now looks like a real ship. It really is quite an impressive sight and I am looking forward to the remainder of the ship structure coming together at the end of this year. It is hard to believe that we have almost two thirds of the ship sat in the dock and will be launching this ship in little over a year from now. Progress is also picking up on Prince of Wales: we now have Lower Blocks 02-04, Centre Blocks 02 (2 Rings) and some of the Sponsons in build. Lower Block 01 (the bulbous bow) is already complete and delivered to Rosyth. While all the focus is on Queen Elizabeth we are not forgetting Prince of Wales and are applying lessons learnt from the first ship to ensure we optimise progress on the second. Crew numbers have now increased to 18 and they are throwing themselves into their work, getting to grips with the ship and how they will operate her. This is evident with the work the crew are doing at our shore development sites to get up to speed on the ship communications network (known as the Internal Network Environment (INE)) by helping to test and commission the system. The INE is the heart of the ships’ mission systems and will link virtually every computer and information system on board the ship and, where appropriate, connect them to the outside world via satellite. Having early crew involvement in this process will pay dividends later, as the crew are able to give direct feedback to the contractors to ensure the system delivers what they need. As crew numbers steadily increase over the next two years, I am expecting to see them involved with the test and commissioning of the majority of the ship systems they will be using. So in summary there are 20
clear signs of an aircraft carrier in the dock while inside the ship and ashore significant progress is being made in putting in place key components of the infrastructure. LV power is on in two blocks and we are now starting to move from block assembly to system completion with a mind to starting system commissioning, which I will address in my next bulletin. Rear Admiral Steve Brunton RN Director Ship Acquisition

Royal Marines - Leave Afghanistan for the last time
I am sure Shipmates would like to know that the last commando group of thousands of Royal Marines to serve in Afghanistan are returning to the UK – marking the end of more than a decade of operational deployments in the country. In an historic moment, troops from 40 Commando Royal Marines (40 Cdo) symbolically lowered the Royal Navy’s white ensign that has flown above their main operating base (MOB) Price, in the Nahr-e Saraj district, for the past six months – the last time the flag will fly in Helmand Province. 40 Cdo are the most recent Royal Marine unit to serve in Afghanistan after successive deployments that have seen Marines serve in areas such as Sangin, Nahr-e Saraj and Musa Qala. 40 Cdo were also the very first British troops to deploy to the country in 2001, securing Bagram airfield and going on to patrol the streets of Kabul. The equivalent of over 14,000 Marines have deployed on operations in Afghanistan. The 7,200strong Royal Marine Corps has deployed units to Afghanistan 12 times, along with many individuals who have been attached to other units. And the Royal Marines have been awarded nearly 200 honours for their acts of bravery and distinguished service in Afghanistan, including a George Cross, seven Distinguished Service Orders and ten awards of the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross, including one posthumously. The commando group, who have now handed over to 1st Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, have seen security improve dramatically during their tour. Working out of MOB Price, which the Marines nicknamed “HMS Price” in line with Royal Navy tradition, they have developed the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan police units in the area to take on responsibility for security and have worked together to successfully tackle the insurgency. In the past year, the number of UK bases across Helmand has reduced from 80 to 12 as they are handed over to Afghan forces or dismantled, in line with growing Afghan security capability. MOB Price is expected to be handed over to the Afghans in due course. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: “The courage of the Royal Marines, and indeed all of our Armed Forces who have served in Afghanistan over the past decade, has been truly outstanding. Their commitment has made sure that transition of security to Afghan control is deliverable by the time we end our combat operations in December 2014. “I recently saw for myself the capabilities of the Royal Marines as they undertook arduous winter training in Norway. I was extremely impressed by these Commandos who are absolutely committed to preparing for contingency operations that may arise whenever and wherever in the world. “The hard work of 40 Commando Royal Marines in Afghanistan over the winter has led to impressive progress in the capabilities of Afghan forces as they take on security responsibility, with decreasing levels of assistance from UK and ISAF forces. “It is these Afghan forces, developed and trained by UK personnel, who will ensure that Afghanistan never again provides a safe haven for terrorists.”
Some Royal Marines will remain serving in Afghanistan on an individual basis, working alongside their colleagues from other services, as the UK continues to support the development of the Afghan National Security Forces.

Remembrance Paving Stones at the National Memorial Arboretum
The Royal Naval Association has been given early sight of this project and invites you to communicate this at the earliest opportunity to your organisations and members. It would be good to see the Navy in prime position! Since the opening of the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, visitor numbers have increased from 65,000 to 300,000. A recent research project showed that this figure is likely to increase to half a million in the next ten years. A £12million appeal was launched to rebuild the visitor centre so that those making the journey to the Arboretum would be able to enjoy outstanding facilities. The appeal was launched by HRH the Duke of Cambridge, the Patron, in 2009, and has £4m left to raise. The Duke is also Patron of the Appeal. The Appeal Committee includes many prominent people including Admiral the Lord Boyce who commented as follows : “The National Memorial Arboretum, set in a beautiful landscape and with a multitude of evocative sites, is a truly moving place to visit. It is not surprising that it is becoming a venue which anyone who has had connections with men and women who have lost their lives on public service will want to visit. The concept of paving stones to populate Heroes’ Square, described below, will allow associations, units and individuals to have very special recognition; and they will provide an added dimension for the visitor. I most strongly commend the idea.” The new visitor centre will include rooms for Education, Interpretation and Exhibition. There will be a beautiful Atrium area for groups to gather. There will be a large restaurant and small café, both with outside seating for the summer. There will also be a large Pavilion for functions of up to 300 people. In the middle of this stunning new development is a courtyard called Heroes’ Square. To help fund the project, the appeal is offering a limited number of paving stones to be engraved with the names of associations and individuals. Each engraved stone will have plain paving stones around them so that they are not ‘crowded’. The stones are the Yorkstone Scoutmoor, chosen for their hard wearing qualities. Large paving stones are being offered for engraving to Ships, Squadrons, Commandos, Establishments and Associations and will carry their badge or crest. These cost £3,000 each. Smaller paving stones are offered for engraving in the name of individuals who have served this country, whether it be family or friends. These are offered at £600. More information is available (from 1 May 2013) on the website www.thenma.org.uk/pavings 24

Simply visit the Hold an Event section of our website to find out more. You’ll be joining an illustrious list that includes Plymouth, Cardiff, Cleethorpes and Grimsby. GRANNY ON OPERATIONS As we are all gearing up for Armed Forces Day, let’s spare a thought for those people in the Armed Forces that may not fit our preconceived notions of Service personnel. Marie Semple is an Army reservist working in the field hospital in Camp Bastion. Nothing that different there you might think, but you would be mistaken. Marie is actually a semi-retired grandmother of five and has cared for wounded soldiers, Afghan civilians and even insurgents during her current tour.
25
When asked about why she chose an operational tour of Afghanistan, Marie said "I didn't think twice about coming out. I joined the TA late in life for the challenge and for the possibility of deploying somewhere. The whole idea of joining was to deploy but I have certainly got my money's worth out of it." Marie, aged 55, has certainly made the most out of being part of the TA. Since signing up eight years ago she has completed an operational tour of duty in Iraq in 2003, and was previously in Afghanistan during 2008. Major Semple is one of two grandmothers currently working the wards at Camp Bastion. She said her grandchildren are too young to fully understand exactly what her duty entails - "I don't think they know the context of war as such. I told them I was going to Afghanistan, got them a map and explained what I was doing. I sent a picture home and my grandson said 'Oh granny is shooting bad people'. They don't understand that I am a nurse - I am not out here on the ground." Reservists will yet again play a big part in Armed Forces Day celebrations, in particular on Wednesday 26 June when they are being encouraged to wear their military uniforms to their day job to demonstrate the huge contribution that ordinary citizens can make to the Armed Forces. Last year saw thousands of Reservists across the country - from gardeners to bankers - hang up their usual work clothes and proudly don their Service uniforms. Reservists come from every walk of life, and from communities up and down the country. Many of those who will wear their uniforms have deployed on at least one tour of duty, to places such as Afghanistan, and their invaluable experience and skills gained through their Service jobs directly benefit employers.

Naval Historical Collectors & Research Association
The NHCRA was founded in 1988 by naval enthusiasts who felt there was no organisation catering for their varied interests. Some are avid collectors of medals, badges and photographs, while others research naval personnel, ships, battles or social history. Many are keen family historians while others just enjoy reading The Review, a polished quarterly journal produced for members. For more information, go to our website at www.nhcraonline.org or call the General Secretary on 01924 256644.

This decision will be generally welcomed throughout the Fleet. The nebulous term naval aviation has never been popular . . .’ – The Times, 21 May 1953. The Casulties of the Merchant Navy
It is, without doubt, difficult to quantify the sacrifices made by the Merchant Fleet during the Battle of the Atlantic in terms of loss of shipping but also considerable loss of life. The Merchant Fleet was by no means unfamiliar with great loss having suffered during the First World War, however, these numbers were significantly increased during the Second World War. Proportionately, in terms of the total headcount across the four services, the number of casualties suffered by the Merchant Navy was approximately three times that of the Army and over twice that of the Royal Navy or the Royal Air Force. According to estimates from the War Office, with these figures in mind, this equates to ‘roughly 1 in 6 [..] became casualties’ (Dr M Llewellyn‐Jones Aug 12). A U‐boat shells a merchant ship which remained afloat after being torpedoed, unknown date.

Merchant Navy Memorial ‐ ‘No Grave but the Sea’
Nestled beside the historic Tower of London is the Tower Hill Memorial at Trinity Square Gardens, commemorating those men of the Merchant Navy and fishing fleets who lost their lives during the two World Wars. The first (designed by Edwin Lutyens), commemorates the 12,000 men lost during The First World War. The Second World War Memorial (designed by Sir Edward Maufe), is sited in a sunken garden and honours the 24,000 men of the Merchant Navy and fishing fleet, and 50 Australian seamen, who lost their lives in the service of their country. Source: www.barrowuponsoarwarmemorials.co m/userimages Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in November 1955 and designed by Charles Wheeler, two columns, one representing an officer and the other a seamen, flank the inscription “THE TWENTY‐FOUR THOUSAND OF THE MERCHANT NAVY AND FISHING FLEETS WHOSE NAMES ARE HONOURED ON THE WALLS OF THIS GARDEN GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY AND HAVE NO GRAVE BUT THE SEA”.

The Maritime Context of the Battle of the Atlantic The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign of The Second World War and was pivotal to the overall success of the allied forces. It started with the sinking of the SS Athenia on 3 September 1939 and ended with the surrender of Germany on 8 May 1945. About 30,000 Merchant Navy (MN) personnel were lost and thousands of ships and cargoes sunk. After the fall of Europe the main supply route for the continued prosecution of the war was between the United States / Canada and the UK via the North Atlantic. It was the successful protection of this vital sea corridor by the defeat of the German Surface and U‐boat threat that enabled the massive logistic build up that led to victories in North Africa, at D‐Day and then through to the fall of Germany. The Battle of the Atlantic demonstrated the enduring importance of control of the sea to provide a highway for the transport of raw materials, munitions, and men, to maintain the nation’s security and to project power across the globe.

ROYAL MARINES – THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC
In the Battle of the Atlantic, Royal Marines were part of the crews of all RN ships of cruiser size or larger. Traditionally they manned the ‘X’ gun turret, while the RM Band’s action stations were in the ‘Transmitting Station’ deep inside the ship, where they carried out the calculations necessary to lay the guns on target. In HMS HOOD’s action with the Bismarck in May 1941 the whole detachment of 164 Marines, including the Band, lost their lives: the Bismarck herself was sunk a few days later. Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships – ‘DEMS’ ‐ were equipped with guns manned by ex‐service pensioners, with former Royal Marines playing a full part: a number were awarded either the British Empire Medal or the Lloyd’s War Medal for Bravery at Sea.

Our Island Nation
During the Second World War, and most significantly the Battle of the Atlantic, the UK was heavily dependent on the sea for imports crucial to the survival of the nation and its ability to sustain forces on the battlefronts across the world. Whilst it would be easy to assume that this has changed with the developments in aviation, this is not the case. The UK remains heavily dependent on the sea for its economic development, both in terms of trade and energy supplies. This is not just restricted to home waters, international sea lanes need to be maintained for the benefit of all; the Royal Navy and Royal Marines play a key role in achieving this.
Maritime Context in Numbers (Source: Royal Navy Website) •
The Sea: The UK is an island with 10,500 miles of coastline, 600 ports, approximately 290 offshore oil and gas installations and a significant fishing industry: we are almost entirely dependent on the sea for our economic prosperity.
•
UK Trade: 95 per cent of UK trade by volume (580 million tonnes) goes by sea. In terms of tonnage handled, UK ports are the largest in Europe.
•
Energy Security: The UK’s dependency on imported gas is set to rise and overseas sources will provide up to 80 per cent of UK energy needs by 2020. Seaborne Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) shipments will be central to future UK energy demand.
•
Economic Impact: In total, UK‐based shipping contributes £10bn a year to GDP and almost £3bn to tax revenues making it the UK’s fourth largest services sector industry. The Arctic Star th
As preparations continue to commemorate the 70 Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, the UK Government has taken the opportunity to further recognise the contributions made by the veterans of the Arctic Convoys with the announcement of the Arctic Star medal. This medal recognises service between 1941 and 1945 in delivering vital aid to the Soviet Union, running the gauntlet of Arctic weather, enemy submarine, air and surface ship attacks. The first medals were presented by the Prime Minister in Downing Street on 19th March 2013.
