Welcome to the Autumn season at the RNCM We reach the grand old age of 40 this season and, amongst a series of special anniversary projects, our Ludwig van festival celebrates the music and legacy of Beethoven, with days devoted to the first and second symphonies this Autumn (22 November and 14 December), the festival continuing after Christmas through to June 2013 (see page 35). RNCM Opera presents for the first time one of Claudio Monteverdi’s operas, Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (9, 11, 13 and 15 December). In total contrast, we present two operas virtually still wet on the page, as Music Theatre Wales and Scottish Opera collaborate to bring us a double-bill first seen at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival (7 November). One of jazz’s greatest drummers, Jack DeJohnette visits the UK this Autumn with a band that includes the equally legendary Don Byron (13 November). American pianists Fred Hersch (10 October) and Uri Caine (22 November) also feature, and the Nu Civilisation Orchestra celebrates the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence with a tribute to Joe Harriott (20 October), this as part of the UKwide Lively Up! Festival. The RNCM Big Band kicks off another year with two projects: with saxophonist Dave O’Higgins and band leader Pete Wraight (17 November) and a Christmas show featuring the remarkable vocals of Liane Carroll (12 December).

Another fine jazz voice breathes new life into the poetry of W B Yeats, as Christine Tobin sails to Byzantium as part of this year’s Manchester Literature Festival (21 October). A second collaboration with MLF (16 October) explores the story of the première of Shostakovich’s ‘Leningrad’ symphony, through readings from Sarah Quigley’s new novel and a live performance of the composer’s Eighth String Quartet. There are yet more stories, real and imagined, from Kathryn Tickell’s Northumberland (27 October) and Seth Lakeman’s Dartmoor (19 October). From over the ocean, we welcome the latest artist riding high on Portugal’s remarkable Fado revival, Carminho (12 November). And three shows together demonstrate the incredible depth of music created here and now: the latest project from Jóhann Jóhannsson, a new score for the 1929 silent film Pandora’s Box created in collaboration with Opera North Projects (2 November); the not-so-silent sonic experiments of Norwegian band Supersilent, working for the first time with ex-Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones (16 November); and a new project from new band Vulgar Display, which promises to explore the territory where the classical piano trio meets heavy metal (6 December). We feature Simon Bainbridge’s work in the festival Music Space Reflection, in partnership with the BBC Philharmonic (18 -19 October), as well as regular Autumn features, the RNCM Saxophone Day (28 October), the RNCM Wind Weekend (10 -11 November) and the third edition of the RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition (26 November -1 December). RNCM piano alumnus Christian Blackshaw brings an all-Mozart recital to RNCM, following glowing national reviews (23 October), whilst Paul Lewis and Imogen Cooper play piano duets together for the first time (10 December). Also in the run up to Christmas, The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments bring the music of angels to life, using many of those eponymous strange and ancient instruments to do so (8 December).

Finally, Manchester Camerata’s season features Mozart concertos and Haydn symphonies in the first concerts of a three-year exploration (13 October and 24 November). You’ll find over 20 free lunchtime concerts this Autumn, with regular performances on Mondays and Thursdays and occasionally on Fridays too. And look out for our free Spotlights, a chance to see a little of the music that we make here at the College every day of the year. Celebrating 40 years This season the RNCM celebrates its 40th birthday. Over four decades the College has nurtured over 5,500 students, many of whom are shaping the artistic world in the UK and far beyond as performers, composers, teachers, artistic administrators and much more besides. And from the very start the College has placed performance at its heart, presenting an artistic programme across four public performance venues that plays a major role in the cultural life of our city, Manchester.
The idea of bringing together the Northern School of Music and the Royal Manchester College of Music was mooted as early as 1955, but it wasn’t until 1973 that this vision became a reality, right here on Manchester’s Oxford Road. One of the founders of the new RNCM was Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw, and we celebrate her own 100th year at the Opening Concert of our celebrations on 15 November, a recreation of the first programme performed by an RNCM orchestra, 40 years to the day that the first notes were played (see page 22). A week later we open Ludwig van, a sixmonth Beethoven festival that explores how this composer transformed Western classical music forever. The festival features not one, but two Beethoven symphony cycles, plus weekends dedicated to his chamber, string and keyboard

music, and a contemporary festival-within-afestival that re-invents his music for the 21st century (see pages 25, 33 and 35). In November, we launch the RNCM in the City series, a gift to Manchester of 40 free public concerts featuring music of all shapes and forms in 40 different venues across the city. The first concert will take place at the Town Hall (see page 26) and the line-up of all 40 concerts will be announced in the Autumn.
Person’s Guide to the Orchestra for the digital age, celebrating our partnership with Opera North with an Opera Gala on 22 January, and enjoying An Enchanted Evening with Sir Willard White (currently the RNCM’s President) at The Bridgewater Hall on 12 June. And to close our celebrations we will be creating the latest in a series of large-scale musical installations for major public spaces, this time working for the first time in an iconic site in London.
RNCM in the City runs through to June 2013, as does the Ludwig van festival, which closes with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at The Bridgewater Hall on 28 June, 40 years to the day that the RNCM was officially opened by HRH The Duchess of Kent in 1973. It retells the story of the performance of Shostakovich’s seventh symphony during the siege of Leningrad in 1942, following Shostakovich and the conductor of the infamous performance, Karl Eliasberg. Carminho Carminho is Portugal’s brightest new star. Brodsky Quartet Wheel of 4Tunes
In celebration of their own 40th year, RNCM alumni the Brodsky Quartet have put together a fantastic evening which promises a diverse programme of music with an element of audience interaction, including a ‘Wheel of Fortune’ comprising 40 of their favourite quartets and short pieces. Throughout the evening, either the quartet or an audience member will spin the wheel, and the quartet will then play the pieces chosen by it. With all 40 scores and parts to hand, the quartet will also discuss the music and invite questions from the audience. Whilst there is no set programme, audiences will be treated to a rare opportunity of actually getting to know the musicians and their history as an ensemble. Vulgar Display
ROOF St Petersburg Charity Concert
Launched in February this year, Vulgar Display is a new music ensemble that seeks to render an irreconcilable antagonism between extreme metal and contemporary classical music. As such, the instrumentation embraces both the brutality and aggression of the former and the (perceived) delicacy and subtlety of the latter: heavily distorted and detuned electric guitar, a percussion battery and a traditional piano trio. A number of eminent composers, including Gary Carpenter, David Horne, Emily Howard and Larry Goves, have written music especially for the project and their work is showcased tonight.

Their roles in the life of mankind are various; they appear as guardians, guides, judges and interpreters and cross barriers of culture, language, religion and geography. Many are a force for good, but there are also fallen angels, angels of death and others who are spirits of wrath, destruction, confusion and vengeance. In this programme, The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments explores music associated with angels: the maverick and fallen, as well as the divine. Playing some of the instruments that appear in depictions of angels through the ages, this talented early music ensemble presents traditional tunes, dances, songs and carols in a celebration of these heavenly and occasionally diabolical beings. Wooed on all sides by the men of the court, what she doesn’t know is that he’s already home, deposited in the dead of night on a beach by some friendly Phaeacians. Reunited by the gods with his son,
Telemachus, the disguised pair makes their way to the Royal Palace. There, Penelope’s loyalty is tested by a trial that features a huge bow and arrow, with husband and wife eventually reunited in complete, loving bliss.

The Outreach team designs and manages a large number of bespoke projects and events for a wide range of participants, involving work with under-5s, schools and community groups. RNCM Music for Health This is an innovative programme of training and professional support for musicians and health care professionals wanting to engage musically with people in health and social care settings. Delivered in collaboration with the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Lime and a wide range of partners, the programme trains musicians and health care professionals to co-create and play music with patients, visitors and staff in hospitals and community care centres, and also incorporates a regular concert series at the hospitals. External Performances RNCM ensembles and soloists regularly perform at venues and in high-profile concert series throughout the UK and for a wide range of promoters from music societies and clubs to orchestras, opera companies and individuals. Look out for regular concert series in St Ann’s Church in the city centre, Emmanuel Church in Didsbury and the Whitworth Art Gallery on Oxford Road, as well as RNCM in the City, a series of 40 free public performances in 40 different venues across the city running from December 2012 to June 2013 as part of the RNCM’s 40th anniversary celebrations (see pages 4-5 for details).

The RNCM’s restaurant, bar and grill serves morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea, all-day snacks, pre-concert dining and much more. Table reservations are strongly recommended.
Afternoon Tea Traditional afternoon tea is served from 2pm -4pm Monday -Friday, and is the ideal accompaniment to a lunchtime concert. Priced from £9.95 per head, tables for afternoon tea must be reserved in advance. Please call 0161 907 5353 or 0161 907 5252 to book.
Pre-Concert Dining Pre-concert dining is available from 5pm and offers a full-service experience with waiting staff taking orders at your table. Bookings can be made from Monday -Saturday. Please call 0161 907 5353 or 0161 907 5252 to reserve your table.
Café Open from 8am until the interval during evening performances, our Café serves refreshments and light snacks all day, and hot dishes from 12 -2pm and 5pm -7pm.
Concert Bar The Concert Bar is open from Monday - Saturday from 6pm, and during and after concerts. Interval drinks may be pre-ordered. Wherever possible the RNCM uses Fairtrade products. All food items and menus are subject to availability.
Guide dogs are welcome, please inform the Box Office when booking your ticket. The RNCM Concert Hall and RNCM Theatre are fitted with hearing assistance systems and receivers (available from the Front of House team on request). Receivers can be used in conjunction with a standard hearing aid in the ‘T’ position or an earpiece provided. The RNCM Studio Theatre, Carole Nash Recital Room and RNCM Lecture Theatre are fitted with induction loops (hearing aids should be switched to the ‘T’ position). Free parking is available for disabled patrons, reserve your space with reception on 0161 907 5300.
