Interior Design Design Situation: The Bauhaus has been recognised as being one of the most significant influences on the development of architecture and industrial design during the 20th Century. The designers of the time believed that there was no place for ornament (decoration). Design Brief: Design and produce a leer holder inspired by the Bauhaus Movement which can be used to support envelopes. Criteria for success: (a list of the exact standards for the project) The successful leer rack must: ! Be designed using simple geometric shapes and primary colours ! Only use the supplied materials. ! Use a pine base. It is to remain the same length and be painted only one primary colour ! Use wood cut into creative shapes as the side pieces for your design Be joined using PVA glue and small nails.

Investigating
The Bauhaus movement is a school of art, architecture and design founded in Germany in 1919. The Bauhaus style is typically characterised by its use of geometric shapes and bold primary colours. The school was founded by Walter Gropius who was an architect. Its style became one of the most influential in modern design and had a significant impact on art, architecture, graphic design, interior design and industrial design. INTRODUCTION – Outline a brief history of the Bauhaus design movement. Explain who Walter Gropius and William Morris are.
The Bauhaus is dedicated to design in Germany. The Bauhaus is based on a simple form of geometric shapes and what people thought were rational forms. The Bauhaus started in 1919 ( the 20th centenary) by the founder named Walter Gropius. It moved to Dessau until 1932 and then it moved to berlin during its final few months, Even though the Bauhaus itself had a short life the ideas didn't. The Bauhaus ran for about 14 years. The main idea that came out of the Bauhaus was functionalism. Walter Gropius was an early 20th century architect known for creating the Bauhaus school of design. Walter Gropius studied architecture in Munich and worked in the office of Peter Behrens in Berlin. In 1910 he formed a partnership with Adolf Meyer. William Morris was a leading figure in the revival of the decorative arts in the second half of the nineteenth century, and has sometimes been referred to as the father of modern design. The work he designed drew heavily upon nature. This influence can be found in his preference for strong, flowing curves and repeat patterns. He involved himself in almost all the decorative arts - wallpapers, curtains, carpets, furnishing fabrics, furniture, stained glass windows, embroidery and tapestry weaving.

The Area of Design that the Bauhaus used and made was the built environment. I think this fits in the area of design because they were functional and were created to handle the products they produced.

I will use the Bauhaus as an inspiration to my letter holder by using Simple shapes such as squares,circles,triangles and straight line. I will also use Primary colours such as Red,Yellow and Blue. I wont use the primary colours for the base which no-one will see that often. The base will be Natural colours.

Drill Press
Large industrial machine used to drill holes into large and small materials such as wood, metal and plastic.
Scroll Saw
The scroll saw is used for freehand cutting intricate shapes in relatively thin wood. The scroll saw uses very thin blades that allow you to cut very small radius curves. Think of a scroll saw as being an upside down bayonet saw, but with a much finer blade, and you will not be too far from reality.
Steel Rule
The steel rule is a basic measuring tool. When used correctly, a good steel rule is a surprisingly accurate measuring device.
Hand File
hand files to use on wood and metal. Files can be used to shape wooden fishing lures; for finishing metal molds, jigs, and other lures, for cutting tempered steel wire, hooks, metal hardware
PVA Glue
P.V.A glue is a strong glue and is used mainly for stiking items together.
Dust Mask
. They can sometimes provide comfort against hot/cold air and nuisance (non-toxic) dusts, fumes, or mists, and in this they "protect" against discomfort. They are not respirators in the sense that this word is typically used, and they ARE NOT to be used for protection against airborne toxic particulate matter or for gases or vapors. If your work area or supervisor allows or requires the use of dust masks, study the information presented here and check the topic on the PPE training checklist in order to indicate that you have been informed of these facts.

Safety goggles are used to protect the eyes of the wearer during activities where eye injury is a risk.
