Building a Culture of philanthropy

We are more than halfway through the 2023-2024 academic year, and it brings me joy every time I visit the beautiful RNS campus to see it alive with energy, excitement, and a true commitment to excellence. Whether joining the students for lunch, taking in a game, attending the AGM, or Reunion Weekend, I am always amazed by the spirit of camaraderie and emphasis on community that defines our remarkable school.

As Chair of the RNS Foundation, I would like to offer this report as an opportunity for you to reflect on the theme woven throughout these pages – Building a Culture of Philanthropy. RNS is a great school made even better thanks to the people who give back to ensure its continued success. Fostering a culture of giving back is not just about financial contributions; it is about protecting and championing the RNS community, taking shared responsibility, and being dedicated to a school that shapes lives.

In an independent school setting, where individuality and innovation flourish, the impact of such a culture is profound.

Thank you for all you do for RNS – your gifts are foundational to building bright futures.

In gratitude,

Rick Buckingham ’74 The RNS Foundation is made up of the following members: Rick Buckingham ’74 (Chair), Tanya Moran (Treasurer), Peter Campion ’82, Hilary Drain ’74, Sylvia MacVey ’75, Drummond Macdougall ’72, Lloyd Shears ’74, Diggy Turnbull ’81, Tyler Veriker ’06, Sheena Young ’04, Rob Beatty (ex officio), Jim Brennan (ex-officio), and Paul McLellan (ex officio).

Your Support helps RNS stand the test of time

Welcome to our new Impact of Giving Report. This report provides a way to thank our many generous, community-minded donors, without whom we would not be able to offer our lifechanging educational experience. It’s thanks to our supporters from near and far that RNS stands the test of time. Looking around our campus, it is clear why it is the envy of schools across the country. But that’s not through luck; it is because of gifts made by donors who understand the importance of giving back.

The tradition of giving back is deeply rooted in RNS history. Every building on our beautiful campus has been a gift. From benches and paths to lamp posts, buildings and trees, our alumni demonstrate that the lessons of giving back they learned here are in practice after graduation.

Tuition does not cover the total expense of an RNS education. In fact, there is a tuition gap of 10%. We need to fundraise to lessen the burden this gap causes on our operational budget. There are numerous ways you can help us continue to impact every aspect of our students’ lives, transforming them into the leaders of tomorrow: the RNS Endowment, Capital Giving, Legacy Gifts, and the Annual Fund.

Please continue to show your support for your school. All donations, big or small, or of talent and time, demonstrate your commitment to a place that is so special to so many.

Sincerely,

2023-2024 3

A Spirit of giving back

When I think about Building a Culture of Philanthropy within the RNS community, I do not have to look far to see the seeds of that mindset being planted on our campus every day. Our students show up for each other by cheering on the Riverhawks, applauding loudly from the theatre during performances, and helping at peer tutoring every week, to name only a few examples. Beyond the Hill, they show up for the broader community by diligently supporting the Terry Fox Run, the Saint John Community Christmas Exchange, and Relay For Life. Our students fundraise, serve meals, make blankets, mentor, and help wherever they can. If there is a hand to lend, we always get more volunteers than we expect.

The spirit of giving back extends to our faculty, who are at the heart of everything the students take on; their dedication to our kids is the reason our student initiatives are successful. Not to mention the faculty support of the Student Success Program, which you will read more about in this report.

RNS is a registered charity, much like the others we assist year-round. We need your help to meet the financial needs of our students, close the tuition gap by contributing to our endowment, and keep our building and facilities operating at the highest standards.

Please continue giving back in ways that are meaningful to you. When you lead by example, you inspire others – especially our young global citizens – to pay it forward.

As we embark on this journey of Building a Culture of Philanthropy, I invite each member of our community to consider the unique role they can play. Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to our shared vision of a vibrant, growing community that gives back.

Thank you,

IMPACT of giving 4

WHY I give

SHEENA Young ’04

Attending RNS as a boarding student gave me independence and confidence, along with a unique lived experience that prepared me to live my best life. Coming from a small rural community where ‘it takes a village’ is a mindset that was instilled in me from a young age. I have seen the power of giving, and that’s why I give back to RNS.

When I think back to the many volunteers and contributors who made my experience at RNS the best it could be, I want to follow their lead to ensure the experience of the student body of the future is the best it can be.”

WHY We give CLASS of ’83

Contributed

by Tom Wellner ’83

“I was fortunate to have been given a scholarship to attend RNS. I have always been grateful for the opportunity and look for ways to repay the gift.

The Memorial Chapel renovation gave the perfect opportunity to give. Our Class was very connected with Reverend Jim Golding, and we wanted to show support for his work and memory.

I am very proud of our Class as we collectively stepped up and made a difference to this important project.”

Our Students in service

One of the RNS school values is community, and caring for our community is part of our DNA. Being a good person and a good neighbour is taught in chapel and in classrooms, and is put into practice every day. In fact, our students spend more than 10,000 hours giving back each year. Here are a few examples of our students living lives of service:

• RNS Community Day was established in March 2023 by former Head Prefects Emma Moriarty ’22 and Megan Leung ’23 as a way for RNS to engage in hands-on activities to give back to the local community. The inaugural event included reading to and mentoring elementary school students and community clean-up efforts.

• We present an annual Youth for Youth concert to raise funds for the Saint John Teen Resource Centre.

• The RNS Gender & Sexuality Alliance fundraises for Chroma to support pride, inclusion, and equality.

• We host the annual Interhouse 12 Days of Sockmas/ Cozy Collectables and donate to those in need during the holiday season.

• Throughout the year, we fundraise for the international

Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) in various ways.

• Members of our hockey teams skate with three-and-fouryear-olds from the Rothesay Nursery School in our arena.

• We host the annual Relay for Life on Quinn Field for cancer research and support.

• We provide our facilities to like-minded groups that give back to the community, like Touchstone Academy and the Rothesay Yule.

And these are only a few of the commitments our students and our school take on to give back.

In the classroom, our Grade 11 and 12 students undertake CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) hours, which are a mandatory component of the IB curriculum. Through CAS, our students have profound and life-changing experiences serving the greater good.

Service is among the seven prefectship opportunities available to our Grade 12 students as well as a cohort of Middle School Ambassadors. We also have a Service Round Council, which is based on the Round Square IDEALS.

IMPACT of giving 18

Our students graduate from RNS with a strong understanding that giving back to the broader community is a fundamental aspect of being a responsible global citizen. By sharing resources, skills, and time, volunteering and philanthropy, RNS students, employees, and alumni make a positive impact on the lives of others.

The RNS Culture of Philanthropy truly is a living ecosystem of support, compassion, and leadership.

Please help us keep the generosity of spirit and giving in full circle.

Over the last 3 academic years, our students have raised:

Saint John Community Christmas Exchange - $14,125

Relay For Life - $5,166

Youth for Youth (TRC) - $14,350

Maddy Murphy ’16 Memorial Foundation - $7,823

Everything we do at RNS is for the kids.”

Gray, RNS Faculty & Student Success Program Committee Member

Established in 2018, the RNS Student Success Program is a financial resource funded by RNS employees through bi-weekly payroll deductions, with contributions matched by the school. The program supports students by offsetting the costs associated with extracurricular trips and leadership opportunities throughout the year. Students apply for a $750-$1,000 grant through a process that allows them to demonstrate how the funding will impact the RNS community. Approximately 20 students per year receive an

award. “We do this to show the kids that we’re here for them,” says RNS faculty Jamie Gray and Program Committee member. “We receive emails from recipients saying ‘thank you for this bursary, I really appreciate the generosity of the teachers and staff,’ and parents saying they recognize the value of the program and they appreciate it more than we know. Everything we do at RNS is for the kids.” The Student Success Program has awarded $35,000 to deserving students to strengthen our community since its inception.

RNS Sustainability REPORT CARD

As a progressive, future-looking school educating tomorrow’s leaders, we know that metrics related to our social and environmental impact are important to share for transparency and accountability. We hope that by identifying and sharing this data, we can demonstrate that the RNS value of a commitment to the community is a priority for our students, employees, and our Directors and Governors. We also hope that this Report Card is not only inspiring but challenges us to do better every year in the pursuit of the greater good.

This measurement tool is a snapshot of our current state and will help us track our progress into the future. It is our commitment to YOU that we are putting the RNS vision of bringing out the best in every student by giving them the skills, confidence, and passion they need to chart their own path and make a significant contribution to the world around them into action.

To support our efforts in understanding and measuring our impacts, we are following three globally recognized sustainability pillars: Environment, Social Impact, and Good Governance (ESG).

Our students graduate from RNS as global citizens determined to make a difference in the world. This is how we are nurturing that mindset as a school.

More than 30+ new trees planted on campus this year, with hundreds of saplings planted along the back waterline of the new field. RNS also underwent an Energy Audit by MCW Maricor for sustainable energy solutions.

Composting happens daily in Heritage Hall and is used in the RNS Student Garden. Food that cannot be repurposed is donated to Outflow Ministry Inc. shelter twice a month. Perishable foods are donated to local shelters and food banks ahead of school breaks. There is signage on site to remind diners about portion sizes and composting.

Each year, RNS students serve the community by donating their time to the following organizations:

- Outflow Ministry Inc. – 500 hours

- Heart and Stroke Fdn. – 120 hours

- Big Brothers Big Sisters – 1,200 hours

- Saint John Teen Resource Centre tutoring – 50 hours

- IB Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) Hours - 9,000+ hours

In 2022-2023 the RNS Environmental Round Council and faculty volunteers created a student garden on campus. This initiative cultivates Seven Generations Thinking (an Indigenous philosophy that decisions made today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future), while promoting composting, skills building, and responsibility.

RNS works proudly with:

IMPACT of giving 20

As part of our Community of Care framework, all RNS students have toured the Wellness Centre to meet the staff and learn about the services on campus to support their physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health and well-being. Our employees have access to a comprehensive benefits program, which includes health, dental, and mental wellness services. The Roslyn Isobel Stollery Fitness Centre is available for all students and employees.

RNS Directors and Governors were offered the following professional development workshops this year:

- Good Governance for Independent Schools

- Risk Oversight for Independent Schools

- Climate Governance and Independent Schools

To educate our community about the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), RNS has student advocacy groups including RISE (Resist Injustice, Seek Equity), the GSA Committee (Gender & Sexuality Alliance), PRIDE Week Committee, and bi-weekly Head’s Circle luncheons.

We Want to Hear from You! Email paul.mclellan@rns.cc to share your feedback on this report.

RESPONSIBLE INVESTING Managing Investments with an ESG Focus

Contributed by Fraser Wells ’11

The portfolios for the RNS pooled investments are managed with an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) lens. Responsible investing is inherently subjective, as ESG has different meanings for different investors. For some, it may entail exclusionary screening of companies in certain sectors, such as gambling, tobacco, and ammunition. For others, it resonates at a deeper level, and these investors may invest to generate a measurable positive social or environmental impact (otherwise known as impact investing).

While ESG investing is not the core driver of the portfolio composition,

it’s an important lens we use in the ongoing evaluation and addition or elimination of portfolio holdings. We use a combination of RBC’s research capabilities, as well as the expertise from our third-party research provider, Sustainalytics, which is a global leader in providing independent ESGrelated research. Sustainalytics provides a comprehensive view of all material ESG risks present in most major companies globally and generates scores for these companies that we integrate into our ongoing management of the portfolio. As the space evolves, we plan on continuing to integrate best practices for responsible investing into the RNS investment portfolios.
