liberatingourselvessolelybyourowneffbrtsalmost impossible.Heknewtbattoendone,sproblemsand attainlastinghappinessmanypeoplewouldneedtbe helpofanotherBuddha:Amitabha,theBuddhaof InfiniteLightandInfiniteLifb· AlmostalloftheteachingsbySakyamuniwere theresultofhisbeingaskedaquestion.Ina

departurefromthenorm,andknowingWhenthe timewasright,Sakyamuniinitiatedtheteachingthat introducedAmitabhaandhispurelandThis

spontaneousteachingbySakyamuniiswbatmakes thisteachingsospecial.

Inthisteaching’Sakyamunirecountedbowtbe bodhisattvaDharmakara,afterwitnessingtbe

attainBuddhaboodunlesshisvowsfbraperfbctpure land,whereaIbeingswouldadvancealongthe Buddhistpatbandneveragainfallbackintosamsara, wereaccomplisbedOncethesevowswere accomplished,DbarmakaraBodhisatIabecame AmitabhaBuddba路HeisnowspeakingtheDharmain hispurelandandhelpingallWhoaretrulysincerein theirvowstobereborntbere.

VVitbhelpfromAmitabha,wedonothavetorely solelyonourselvestoattainenlightenmentaswe wouldwitbothermetbods.InPureLandBuddbism,

werelyonthecompassionateBuddhasand bodhisattvastobelpus.Thus,relianceonselfandon
