MTO Update - Ontario's Highway Service Centres
T
he Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has signed an interim agreement with its preferred proponent Host Kilmer Service Centres Inc. (HKSC), authorizing the start of construction on seven of the sites. Local economies will be boosted by the redevelopment of the service centres. Approximately 350 construction workers will be on all the sites during construction. Once complete, each service centre will employ approximately 100 to 150 people. In total, up to 2,500 people will be employed across the service centre system. "The first of our modern new highway service centres are scheduled to be open for motorists in less than a year " said Transportation Minister Jim Bradley. "These new service centres will contribute to road safety, support tourism and create thousands of jobs." MTO and HKSC will issue regular notices to inform motorists of closures, planned interim services and new service centre openings, as other service centres are prepared for renewal. Phase One includes: • Bainsville (westbound), near the Quebec/Ontario border • Tilbury South (eastbound) between Windsor and Chatham Kent • Tilbury North (westbound) west of Chatham-Kent • West Lorne (westbound) west of London • Trenton North (westbound) west of Belleville • Dutton (eastbound) east of Chatham-Kent • Morrisburg (eastbound) east of Prescott
Truck Insurance Auto - Home - Commercial
The first seven service centres will reopen with fuel, washrooms, parking and a convenience store in July 2010 and become fully operational in September 2010. The new centres will offer quick service dining, coffee, convenience retail, enhanced truck facilities, tourism information, and state-of-the-art washrooms that are fully accessible to families and disabled individuals. "We appreciate the patience motorists have shown as we redevelop these sites," Bradley said. Designed with environmentally responsible and sustainable features, the new service centres will be constructed to LEED Silver (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards - a respected green building rating system. For the last several months, the province and HKSC have been working to complete site planning and design to prepare for construction. Activities included environmental planning with public participation, investigating geo-technical and topographical site conditions; and completing the design of the service centres. Infrastructure Ontario has been managing the competitive procurement of a new operator on behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.

National Truck League Repositions for 2010
OTA Hails New HST Legislation
R
od Stiller, President of National Truck League has announced the reposition of the National Truck League brand. “National Truck League is known across Canada, as a leading trucking industry insurance specialist. We want our brand synonymous with our reputation and will now be known as National Truck League Insurance Solutions,” says Stiller. The new brand will reinforce the Company’s focus on providing carriers and Owner/Operators with personal protection, group benefits and truck insurance for individuals and fleets. Stiller comments, “We find there are some in the trucking industry who are not aware of the range of risk management solutions we provide with our insurance products and services. In response to this we are repositioning our sales team efforts, marketing, and customer service to ensure our clients receive the full benefit of our expertise and access to some of the best products in the industry to keep their businesses stable and competitive.” More changes are in the works for 2010 with additional products and services to assist carriers and Owner/Operators in increasing their business operating efficiencies, and to cost effectively manage insurance needs. O
TA President David Bradley has welcomed the introduction in the Ontario Legislature of legislation enacting the government’s proposed new harmonized tax system. “For the Ontario trucking industry the fact that the government has moved forward on its budget commitment to harmonize the provincial sales tax (PST) with the federal goods and services tax (GST) starting next year is extremely good news,” Bradley said. Bradley was particularly pleased to note that according to the Government's background material, as part of the transition to the HST and wind-down of the RST, the Multi-Jurisdictional Tax (MJVT) will also be wound down and that under the transition rules the MJVT would simply no longer apply to renewals or new registrations under the IRP on or after July 1, 2010. In addition, trucks would no longer be subject to RST (exit tax) when they cease to be registered under the IRP on or after July 1, 2010. "OTA has had the opportunity to work closely with the government on the transition rules and we had made the case that the fairest way to wind down the MJVT was to do so without imposing any exit tax on those vehicles already in the MJVT system. We're extremely pleased that the government was receptive to our point of view and that the legislation introduced today eliminates the MJVT without imposing an exit tax," Bradley said. "This is a huge win for the OTA and the trucking industry; it will save fleets with trucks registered in IRP about $2000 per vehicle.” Early in the new year OTA will be hosting webinars with the appropriate government officials regarding transitional rules impacting members and tax filing requirements under the HST post July 1, 2010.

MACK MP Engines Certified for EPA2010
M
ack Trucks, Inc. diesel engines have been certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board to meet the near-zero emissions standards which take effect in January 2010. The Mack MP7 and MP8 engines are now officially recognized to meet the strictest diesel emissions standards in the world. “Achieving certification involved many dedicated employees working for many years,” said Kevin Flaherty, Mack senior vice president. “It’s critical that our MP engines continue to deliver the power, performance, durability and reliability for which they are known. Our customers now not only have the cleanest engines in the world, they also have the performance they expect from Mack.” “The new Mack engines are so clean that in some areas, the exhaust leaving our trucks will be cleaner than the air going in,” Flaherty said. “Our EPA’10 engines also have significantly improved fuel economy. Using less fuel shrinks the trucks’ carbon footprint, reduces operating costs for customers and cuts the need for imported oil.” This major step forward is driven by Mack’s use of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to bring nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions down to EPA’10 levels. Mack tested SCR in North America customer fleets for more than two years, accumulating 5 million miles of field testing. The technology has billions of miles of realworld experience in other markets. The Mack SCR technology also
essentially eliminates active regenerations of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) to save even more fuel and further reduce operating costs. SCR enabled Mack to use the proven MP series without major modifications to the engines or cooling systems. SCR permitted Mack engineers to retune the MP engines for additional power, lower heat rejection and reduced fuel consumption.
Mack Trucks, Inc. diesel engines have been certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to meet the EPA2010 standard for near-zero emissions. Mack uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for EPA’10, the most stringent diesel engine emissions regulations in the world.

ichelin Retread Technologies has expanded its retread offering for X One wide single truck tires by introducing the MICHELIN X One XZU S Pre-Mold Retread. The new retread will enable refuse fleets and other urban, high-scrub or regional application vehicles to realize the benefits of both a retread and a wide single tire. “The X One XZU S tire has become a very popular tire in the urban and regional applications, especially for refuse vehicles,” said Tom Brennan, vice president and director of MRT. “Fleets have seen the advantages of X One tires and can now take full advantage of the X One XZU S retread to further reduce their operating costs.” The X One XZU S retread is now available as a Pre-Mold Retread in a 390/430 tread size. estport Innovations has announced that Volvo has entered into an agreement with Westport as a Tier 1 Development Supplier for its heavy duty natural gas engines and associated supply chain. Westport will supply its Westport HD technology and work together with the Gothenburg, Sweden engine manufacturer to qualify appropriate suppliers consistent with Volvo volume and quality expectations. The new natural gas engines are expected to meet future European emission requirements. “High energy efficiency and low emissions of greenhouse gases are a key focus for our strategic development efforts as natural gas and its renewable fuels counterpart, biogas, quickly become the mainstream alternative fuel choice for heavy-duty engines. We are excited to be working together with a global leader who recognizes the importance of both performance and environmental stewardship,” stated David Demers, CEO of Westport Innovations Inc. In July 2008, Westport announced an agreement with Volvo to integrate and test Westport’s HD system on Volvo engines. Under the new agreements, Westport and Volvo will share program development expenses. The agreement requires Westport and Volvo to work to negotiate further agreements regarding certain elements of the development program. It also requires Westport and Volvo to satisfy certain milestones in order for the development program to continue, including the completion of the relevant technological, engineering and cost requirements and the completion of the further agreements. Westport Innovations Inc. is a global supplier of proprietary solutions that allow engines to operate on clean-burning fuels such as compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen and biofuels such as landfill gas. The Westport GX engine and LNG system for heavy duty Class 8 trucks offers class-leading emissions and allows trucking fleets to move to lower-cost, domestically available natural gas. Cummins Westport Inc., Westport’s joint venture with Cummins Inc., manufactures and sells the world's broadest range of low-emissions alternative fuel engines for commercial transportation applications such as trucks and buses.

Nevio Turchet of SelecTrucks of Canada presented the awards and started by saying, “All of the applicants put a lot of time and effort into their retention plans and definitely deserve recognition as leaders in this great industry. Thank you to all of the companies that applied”. In the Fewer than 100 Power Units Category, the award was presented to TST Truckload Express of Mississauga, Ontario and the award was accepted by Tom Philips and Denise Elliott. New Emerging Business Trends - III By Dara Nagra
T
he new emerging business trends directly impact the quality of our work life. The term ‘quality of work life’ is a prominent indicator of the overall quality of human experience in the workplace. The companies which are committed for organizational behavior learning are working hard to increase the quality of work life for their employees. Allowing employees to take one day off as a Family Day, Fitness Club membership, organizing pot-luck lunches where everyone brings their home food to share, celebrating company successes with all the employees and their families, having simple contests like best organized work desk, best department for tidiness, employee of the month contests, social events, participating in charity events are a few examples of commitment towards increasing quality of work life. The positive impacts from these changes are: • Increased productivity as employees who enjoy their work life are more productive, creative, committed to and loyal to the employer • Increased customer service and satisfaction Some of the negative impacts are: • Extra Budget: There is a necessary commitment for extra budget to increase the quality of work life, which may be of significant importance when the company is going through tough times. • If the management is not sincerely committed to these causes, the extra activities just become routine and fail to win the employees’ hearts.

s Ontarians begin another Canadian winter, motorists need to take extra precautions and adjust their driving habits to cold, icy and snowy conditions. The Ministry of Transportation's Winter Driving booklet provides driving tips for winter road conditions. For example, drivers should remember to: • Plan ahead - make sure that your vehicle is "winter ready" with a maintenance check-up
“
QUICK FACTS
• Each year in Ontario, there are 60,000 traffic collisions during the winter months, many involving motorists who fail to adjust their driving habits to weather conditions. • In Northern Ontario, residents and visitors staying less than 30 days (between October 1 and April 30) can legally use studded tires during the winter months to help with braking on slippery surfaces. • Using winter tires in good condition provides better traction and handling and can shorten braking distances by as much as 25 per cent.

Avaal organizes 43rd Dispatch Specialist Course Graduation Ceremony
O
ntarians have voted for a new vehicle licence plate that will encourage consumers to switch to environmentallyfriendly cars and trucks. The new plate will have green lettering on a white background with the picture of a trillium in the middle. It was selected from four choices in an online vote that ran from July to October. Drivers sporting these plates on a plug-in hybrid or battery electric vehicle will be able to: • Use Ontario's High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes until 2015, even if there is just one person in the vehicle • Access recharging facilities at GO Transit and other provincially operated parking lots • Use designated parking spots at the University of Toronto and private companies such as Walmart Canada. The Ministry of Transportation and ServiceOntario will work with the plate manufacturer to develop the winning design for production in accordance with technical and readability standards. The plate is expected to become available in 2010.
“
QUICK FACTS
• The winning design received over 47 per cent of the 14,000 votes cast online. • Ontario's Climate Change Action Plan proposes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Ontario to six per cent below 1990 levels by 2014, and to 15 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020.

Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council By Melroy Coelho
T
he supply chain is one of the most essential components of the Canadian economy, involving more than 730,000 employees from a range of occupations and industries. The success of this sector in meeting its human resources and labour-market challenges has the potential to influence the future of Canada, and the quality of life that we all enjoy. The Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council (CSCSC) was established based on recommendations outlined in the 2005 Study of Human Resources in the Supply Chain Sector published by a group of industry stakeholders. Kevin Maynard, executive director of the CSCSC provided some insightful information into the workings of the council and its mandate. Q: What are the major HR issues the council addresses? A: • Sector governance; • Training and development/education; • Marketing the sector and the “profession”; • Policy implications for governments; and • Human resources processes and practices. The work has been centred on recommended actions in these five areas and covers a range of initiatives intended to address the sector’s major labour market issues: • Attraction and retention; • Education and training;
• Knowledge and skill requirements that allow our labour force to keep pace with changing technology and business conditions; and • Succession and career planning including human resources planning to deal with the demographics of our workforce. Q: What has been achieved so far? A: Training Development/Education • Completed a review of learning system providers and developed programs/courses/training that is available for supply chain employees in Canada; • Developed an “Affinity Group” of learning system providers ; • The Council is active on a number of Program Advisory Committees to guide curriculum development for postsecondary institutions and professional associations; • CSCSC has supported a number of workshops for professional associations where there is a clear linkage to one of the five strategic areas of work; • Completed phase one of the development of Occupational Standards; • Launched a National Accreditation Program (NAP) ; • Developing a set of Occupational Standards and a subset of the NAP specifically for material handlers. Marketing the Sector and the Profession • Developed an initial communications strategy

• Developed a trade show booth with posters and collateral. • Developed Careers In Supply Chain portal for use by target audiences. • Launched model for secondary school partnership through the Toronto. District School Board and Lakeshore Collegiate. • Media partnerships have been established with trade publications to raise awareness of issues facing the sector. Human Resources Policies and Practices • A Labour Market Information Study completed in 2007 led to the development of an online toolkit launched in early 2009; this toolkit provides updated labour market information for each of the 26 NOC coded in the sector, by province and census area, data is also presented by industry; current labour market demand is illustrated using a Google Map interface linked to the National Job Bank; a wiki platform enables employers to share viewpoints on future employment trends . • A Virtual Human Resources Department was launched in early 2009. • A recently launched Recruitment and Retention Project will be used to develop a toolkit that can be used by employers (and other stakeholders) to promote careers within the sector to distinct target markets. Q: What are the council’s plans for the next 12 months? A: The Council will continue the development of occupational standards, material handling skills up-grading and promoting the NAP to both employers and providers. It is expected the Recruitment and Retention Project and its deliverables will appear at many events as work is accomplished. Aboriginal Engagement Project identify linkages between
supply and demand of aboriginal workers in the lower mainland of British Columbia and through a gap analysis provide career exploration, occupation specific training and employment within the sector. Outreach aims to closely connect the Council with employers across Canada. Cross-Sectoral Research on Mature Workers define the current status of older workers (those 45 and over) in the supply chain workforce and identify any issues relating to this group. Q: Briefly describe what you do and what are some of the challenges you face. A: As executive director of the council I view myself as a relationship broker, charged with managing all the perspectives and viewpoints around our collaborative table. My primary function is to support the director’s as together we tackle the challenges of this sector. My primary challenge is to keep the organization focused on strategic objectives, while accomplishing tactical objectives through activities that have outputs that impact on those objectives. ROAD TODAY l DEC 2009
A Second Chance By Bruce Outridge
“
Tis the Season” as they say. What I want to know is who are they? Whether you like it or not, Christmas will soon be upon us. For some it will be an extremely busy time, for others it may remain slow as mud. That’s just the nature of the beast. How busy you are may depend on your performance in the last 12 months. So, if you’re slow, maybe things haven’t been going so well. If you were busy, was it because your performance was good or is everyone just comfortable in their skin and afraid to change. Let’s talk about that a bit. Let’s assume you’re the first company and things are slow, and realize some of that is due to the economy. Realize that factor makes it even more crucial to have outstanding performance. How can you change the odds into your favour you ask? There is no better time than the present. Why? The fact is people are generally in a happier mood over the holidays. How will that help you? Well, if you’ve had bad performance now may be the time to talk with that key person from your customer. Let them know their happiness is your main concern and see what can be done to enhance the relationship between your two companies. What type of new systems or guidelines can be put in place to make sure things run smoothly beginning in the New Year? With the holiday spirit that person may be more open to listening to a resolution “But Bruce that could be done during the year”. You’re right, but during the year everyone is busy and many other problems
are on the table. During the holiday time, people switch gears, their schedule eases and the whole company relaxes. This is what you want – a relaxed client. So, how do you get into seeing the client if they’re not so excited to see you? The all important Christmas gift! I’m not kidding, what better excuse is there than to offer someone a gift. Receptionists may receive you with open arms, but if you’re smart you’ll book an appointment. Remember, it’s a start and the inside willing to go to bat for you. I’ve had that happen at companies it may not save your business, but at least I’ve worked for before and it was the you’ll be on the right track. Evaluate your diff erence between winning and losing a performance, create a plan to correct any contract. Use that holiday spirit to solidify problems, make the appointment and that relationship further. Road safety tips for National Safe Driving Week
A new plan for tires has rolled into Ontario
N
ational Safe Driving Week, which runs December 1-7, is a great time to brush up on responsible driving practices with some key reminders to help keep you and those around you safe on the roads this winter. Prepare your vehicle for winter driving The Canada Safety Council recommends installing winter tires to provide greater traction under snowy or icy conditions and to keep a snow brush/scraper in your car, along with possible emergency items such as a lightweight shovel, battery jumper cables, and a flashlight. Go hands-free Several provinces in Canada have adopted a ban on hand-held cellphone and mobile device use while driving. As a general rule, if you need to use a phone while driving use of a hands-free device such as an ear-bud or bluetooth will ensure you keep two hands on the wheel and two eyes on the road. Mobile providers like Rogers Wireless have a variety of car-kits and hands-free options that not only make great holiday gifts but help keep friends and family safe. Learn how to control skids When skidding, you actually need to go against your natural instincts and turn into the skid and accelerate, says the Canada Safety Council. Doing so transfers your vehicle's weight from the front to the rear and often helps vehicles to regain control. Know what to do in the event of an accident If you find yourself in an emergency situation remain calm and follow these simple steps, courtesy of Rogers: 1. Pull off to the side of the road when it is safe to do so and dial 9-1-1. 2. Give your name and wireless phone number with area code first, and identify yourself as a wireless user. 3. Give the exact location of the incident. Landmarks and street names can be extremely helpful. 4. State the service required - police, fire, ambulance. 5. Report any known injuries. 6. Report any suspect person(s) and their direction of travel. 7. Stay on the line until indicated by the operator. (NC)

The Used Tires Program in Ontario
ROAD TODAY l DEC 2009
O
ntarians can now feel better about where their old tires are going with the launch of Ontario's Used Tire Program by Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS). This Program will ensure the more than 12 million scrap tires generated annually will now be diverted from burning and landfilling to other uses, such as rubber mats, playground products, hockey rinks and automotive parts. The Used Tires Program is an ambitious initiative to responsibly recycle scrap tires into useful products, creating investment and new green jobs, and driving innovation in Ontario. “Ontario's Used Tires Program will bring new life to the millions of used tires coming off vehicles every year,” said Andrew Horsman, executive director of Ontario Tire Stewardship. “Funding for research and development to create new processes and markets for recycled rubber products within the province will create green jobs and economic benefits for Ontarians.” Through a network of registered Collectors including retailers, municipalities and other collection locations across the province, the program will allow Ontarians to drop off up to four used tires per person, at no charge, to be recycled. Tracking systems will help eliminate the illegal dumping of scrap tires and ensure that used tires are managed responsibly. The Used Tires Program also includes a threeyear plan to eliminate the approximately 2.8 million stockpiled tires across Ontario. (NC)

New Professional Certification For Experienced Driver Trainers
T
hose who train and assess truck drivers can now have their own skills and experience recognized through a new Professional Driver Trainer Certification Program offered by the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC). The new certification recognized by the Canadian Vocational Association will reflect past work experience, a review of training materials and procedures, and the successful completion of an online exam. “The goal is to recognize the experienced Driver Trainers who meet National Occupational Standards,” says CTHRC Executive Director Linda Gauthier. “This certification program will help to establish and promote the standards for safety and professional practice, while increasing recognition for the profession of Driver Trainers.” The certifications are offered for those who train in the classroom only, in the cab only, or in both training environments. To earn a certification once they are accepted into the program, applicants need to score 80 % in an online exam and must submit a “training portfolio” that includes a detailed lesson plan, teaching material, and a video of their training in action. To qualify for the in-class certification, applicants must have conducted a minimum of 1,500 hours of verifiable in-class training, completed a recognized train-the-trainer program, and passed the Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) for Professional Driver Trainers. The in-cab certification requires a minimum of 1,500 hours of in-cab training experience, five years of driving experience, a Class 1/A driver’s license, and the successful completion of both a recognized train-the-trainer program and the Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) for Professional Driver Trainers. To qualify for a combined classroom and cab certification, applicants will need a minimum of 3,000 hours of in-class (1,500 hours) and in-cab (1,500 hours) training experience, five years of driving experience and a Class 1/A driver’s license, and must have completed a recognized train-thetrainer program and the Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) for professional Driver Trainers. “This certification program was developed by industry stakeholders for industry,” says Mayne Root, Executive Director, Alberta Motor Transport Association. “It provides consistency across the industry sectors and across the country and has been developed to meet nationally recognized standards. The goal was to have a certification process that was easily accessible to anyone who wanted to participate in it, and I believe that has been accomplished."
ith a strategic focus on efficiency and sustainability, Bison Transport leads the industry in the use of Long Combination Vehicles (LCV) in North America. Also known as Turnpike Doubles, LCVs have been proven to reduce GHG emissions by as much as 40% when compared to single trailer over-theroad operations. Bison Transport recently unveiled a GHG calculator on its web-site that estimates total carbon emissions of single trailer and LCV transport operations for a given length of haul. The calculator is located at http://www. bisontransport.com/environment. LCVs combine technology, efficiency and reduce GHG emissions by 40%. Bison's LCV Division has grown significantly over recent years, particularly in Western Canada. Today they operate over 15 Million miles annually, generating cost savings in fuel and driver wages. In addition to the Western Canada turnpike operation, Bison is also a part of the Ontario LCV Pilot Program that is currently in place. The GHG calculator is a continuation of Bison's Sustainable Transportation strategy which also includes initiatives such as a speed reduction policy, idle reduction technologies in all tractors, fuel efficient tractors, trailer side skirts, and providing industry leading fuel efficiency training to all of the Bison fleet of Drivers. "For Bison, our Sustainable Transportation Strategy guides each of us to seek improvement throughout all our operations and the services we deliver to our customers" says Jeff Pries, VP, Sales & Marketing. "It is our commitment to corporate social responsibility and our means of ensuring that we 'do what is right' to protect our business, our jobs, our customers and our environment."

On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to.” The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft.” Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

Tax Strategies By Fred Watkin
T
hey say that only two things are certain in life – death and taxes. Frankly I could do without either of them, but since I make my living through tax consulting, I guess I can accept it. Death is also part of it, since I handle a number of estates as well. One of these days I will probably do a commercial similar to Russell Oliver and promote tax work on the sidewalk. Interestingly, a number of years ago a colleague of mine called me Tax on Wheels since I am constantly driving between here and North Bay each week. The difference being you get a nice big truck that is probably better in the snow than my car. I thought I would pass along a number of things you can think about since it is the end of the year and its time to think about Christmas and taxes. Why they seem to come hand-in-hand is beyond me. RRSP contributions This is a great tool to save on taxes. For each dollar you put in, you save approximately 15 cents in tax. There are contribution limits each year so just be aware of how much you are allowed to put in. The benefit is that you save on the tax now, and withdraw your funds in the future when you will be in a lower tax bracket. Another investment tool tied in with this is the tax-free savings account. If you have low income, it is better to put into a TFSA rather than your RRSPs because the tax impact will have the opposite effect.
While the funds you contribute are not tax deductible, the income you earn is tax-free. There is really no restriction on what you can have for a TFSA–it is just a name. Some people have stocks and bonds as their TFSA, others have mutual funds. The deadline for RRSP contributions is March 1, 2010; the maximum you can contribute will be $21,000 or whatever amount was stated on your 2008 Notice of Assessment. Personal Payments If you are an owner-operator with your own company, you may have been required to make corporate tax instalments. Remember that the final instalment due date is December 15. If you plan to make any charitable donations for 2009, remember that they need to be made prior to December 31 in order to claim on your 2009 tax return. Medical expenses can be claimed for any 12-month period ending in 2009 – talk to your tax preparer or professional advisor on maximizing the amount you claim. Total amounts in excess of 3% of your net income or $2,011 are eligible. These expenses include dental visits, chiropractors, prescription drugs, prescribed cosmetic surgery etc. If you have children under 16 you are entitled to a non-refundable tax credit of up to $500 for each child in an eligible physical activity program. Other fees that you can claim on your
tax return are the following: • Interest paid on loans used for investment purposes • Safety deposit box fees • Rent/property tax paid (for Ontario tax credit calculations) • Professional fees • Child care expenses (remember that if you paid child care expenses to an individual, you will need that person’s SIN number in order to claim the expense) Home Renovation Tax Credit Earlier this year, the federal government introduced a new tax credit called the "The Home Renovation Tax Credit" (HRTC) which is based on expenses for improvements to your house, condominium or cottage. It can be claimed on your 2009 income tax return and applies to eligible purchases made only after January 27, 2009, and before February 1, 2010. These expenses include carpeting, new kitchen, decks, pools, painting, garage doors etc. They do not include expenses relating to cleanup jobs. The credit applies where you paid a total over $1,000, but not more than $10,000, resulting in a maximum

non-refundable tax credit of 15% which is equal to a tax savings of $1,350. The HRTC will not be reduced by other government tax credits, grants, or incentives that you may be entitled to. Transit Pass Tax Credit Ride a bus?A non-refundable tax credit is issued for the cost of public transit passes (yearly, monthly, weekly and cost-per-trip electronic cards) provided that certain conditions are met. Basically, it works out to one month free. Monthly TTC passes, GO Transit passes etc qualify. Allocating Pension Income to Your Spouse If you receive a pension (CPP or other pensions), you are able to elect to allocate up to one-half of your income that qualifies for the existing pension income tax credit to your resident spouse/common-law partner. This may result in greater after tax income from your retirement plans. If you are over 65, your eligible pension income includes payments from a registered pension plan (RPP – a pension from an employer-sponsored defined benefit plan or a defined contribution plan), income from a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) annuity, a registered retirement income fund (RRIF), a LIF (a locked-in RRIF), or a deferred profit sharing plan (DPSP) annuity. If you are under 65, eligible pension income includes only payments from a registered pension plan (RPP – defined benefit or defined contribution). Eligible pension income does not include guaranteed income supplement (GIS), old age security (OAS), RRSP withdrawals and income from retirement compensation agreements (RCAs).

Anemia
By Dr. Christopher H. Singh
D
o you feel tired and weak even after a good nights sleep? Do you run out of energy very easily? If you said yes to either of these questions then you may have anemia. In simple terms, anemia is a condition in which your red bloods cells do not carry sufficient amounts of oxygen to the tissues of your body. There are several causes of anemia however, some are more common than others. In order to understand anemia we must first discuss red blood cells. The main purpose of these cells is to transport oxygen from your lungs to your brain, organs and tissues, through your blood stream. In order for your body to function normally, it needs a constant supply of oxygenated blood. Red blood cells contain proteins called hemoglobins which are mainly made up of iron. This is what gives your blood its red colour. Oxygen from your lungs is carried in the hemoglobin proteins through your bloodstream. The most common cause of anemia is an iron deficiency. In fact, this type of anemia affects about 1- 2 percent of adults in North America. Due to the lack of iron, your body is unable to produce enough hemoglobin for healthy red blood cells. Another cause of anemia is vitamin deficiencies. In addition to iron, your body requires folate and vitamin B-12 to produce healthy red blood cells. A diet which is lacking in these nutrients may lead to decreased red blood cell production. Other chronic conditions such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, Crohn’s disease and
kidney failure may also cause anemia. The signs and symptoms of anemia can vary from person to person depending on months or longer. However, in the case of its cause however, many people experience an underlying condition causing anemia, fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, once the condition is identified and treated, headaches, dizziness and irregular the anemia will often disappear on its own. heartbeat.
