The 2010 Holiday R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program directed towards the detection and elimination of individuals from our roads who choose to drink and drive, has been launched extensively by the police services and will run throughout the holiday season. Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of criminal death in Canada. Please think before you drink and drive, it is not worth risking life. Road safety is a shared responsibility and it starts with you. Operation Red Nose - a unique program dedicated against drinking and driving is available in many communities across Canada. The program is a volunteer driving service provided during the Holiday Season to all drivers who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive their own vehicle. It is an original and free way of getting a safe ride in one’s own vehicle without driving it. For more information visit www.operationrednose. com Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Good Morning Today’ our weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am for latest trucking and transportations news, laws and regulations. Daimler Trucks North America and Walmart Develop Hybrid Electric Cascadia New truck marks beginning of a long-term strategic partnership between DTNA and Walmart
D
aimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) and Walmart have collaborated to build the first-ever hybrid electric Freightliner Cascadia. This truck also marks the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership between DTNA and Walmart to develop innovative, green technologies. Developed based on a Walmart spec’d truck, the 72-inch raised roof Detroit Diesel DD15-equipped Cascadia features a parallel hybrid system based on an electrically-driven second drive axle. The system uses an advanced lithium-ion-based energy storage and advanced electronic control algorithms that were developed in collaboration with the Daimler Trucks Global Hybrid Center in Japan. With this advanced hybrid technology, the conventional drivetrain remains completely intact, allowing for high system reliability from the very beginning. In addition, initial assessments of fuel efficiency further indicate the potential of this technology. “Starting with our advanced wind tunnel testing facility, DTNA has long been dedicated to developing the industry’s most efficient and environmentallyfriendly technologies, and this new Cascadia marks the next evolution in hybrid electric solutions for heavy-duty vehicles,” said Wilfried Achenbach, senior vice president, engineering and technology for Daimler Trucks North America. “Our customers look to us for advanced solutions in every application, and we will continue to deliver at every turn.” Long-time customer Walmart will work closely with DTNA engineers to create new products that will ultimately serve as a roadmap to future innovations. “Walmart is partnering with our suppliers like Daimler Trucks North America to develop technologies that will improve the efficiency and lessen the impact of our operations. These partnerships help to prove out these technologies and speed up the time to
market,” said Chris Sultemeier, senior vice president of transportation for Walmart. “We look forward to working with DTNA on this and other projects.” “The new advanced engineering partnership with Walmart highlights our commitment to green technologies as well as our desire to work closely with core customers to continue developing alternative fuel vehicles,” said Mark Lampert, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Daimler Trucks North America. “We look forward to seeing what else this joint venture will result in, and to providing Walmart and all of our customers with the right tools that will positively impact their bottom line.” DTNA already offers products powered by alternative technologies, including the Freightliner Business Class M2 106 Hybrid, and the Freightliner Business Class M2 112 natural gas lineup.

Recognized for Over Half Century of Passion for Trucking
“I love trucking!” That’s usually how George Ledson, founder and president of Cavalier Transportation Inc., of Bolton, ON and recipient of the prestigious Shaw Tracking-OTA Service to Industry Award for 2010 often starts or ends a conversation. 2010 marks George’s 53rd year in the trucking business and his passion for the industry is as strong today as it was in the beginning. He started his trucking career as a credit clerk for Intercity Truck Lines where over the next twenty years he continued to move up the ladder from traffic manager, to costing manager, to vice president operations and Toronto terminal manager. In 1978, he started his own business, Cavalier Transportation, which started out as a consulting company with its offices at the Ledson family’s kitchen table, but quickly evolved into a successful load brokerage which continues to this day. In 1985, the company expanded to include a licenced for-hire trucking company providing local cartage and regional service in the GTA. In 1990, Cavalier Logistics was formed which includes a large warehouse operation. From those humble beginnings around the kitchen table, our recipient’s companies now employ over 180 people, operate a fleet of 85 trucks and 265 trailers providing domestic and international service in Canada and the United States as well as over 250,000 square feet of state of the art storage space. In addition to building a successful family business, George has also served for many years on the board of directors of both OTA and the Canadian Trucking Alliance. From 2002 to 2004 he served as chairman of OTA, which he claims was such an honour it was like winning an Oscar. In 2007, he was inducted into the OTA Pioneer’s half-century club. He also continues to serve on the board of trustees of the OTA Education Foundation. George and his wife, Bonnie, are long-time residents of the Caledon/Orangeville area. He is very active in several charities in his community. In fact, an entire wing of the Headwaters Health Care Centre is named after him. He is also past chairman of the Caledon Chamber of Commerce and the Caledon Meals on Wheels. George is an avid horseman, owning and training thoroughbreds. In fact, Cavalier Transport is named after his father’s favorite horse. Mike Ham, vice president business services at Shaw Tracking, says “George exemplifies commitment, contribution, and dedication to the Ontario trucking industry and to OTA; he is a most deserving recipient.” OTA president, David Bradley, echoes Ham’s sentiments. “George is passionate about the trucking industry and is one of the most respected people in the business.” 10

VAC-CON and Freightliner Trucks Develop First Turnkey Natural Gas Truck Upfitted with Vacuum Body
F
reightliner Trucks has announced that it has delivered the first turnkey natural gas truck upfitted with a vacuum body. Developed in collaboration with VAC-CON, the Freightliner Business Class M2 112V Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck will also be equipped with a CNG-powered auxiliary-mounted engine that powers the truck’s water system. Jacksonville, Fla.-based VAC-CON provides combination sewer cleaners to municipal and private markets throughout the world. Its combination cleaners combine high-pressure water and vacuum systems to effectively clean both sanitary and storm drainage infrastructure. VAC-CON tapped Freightliner Trucks to develop the CNG truck based on its ability to fulfill VAC-CON’s unique specs and need for a turnkey chassis solution. “There’s a tremendous green movement happening now, and our customers are looking to us to provide efficient products with alternative fuel options,” said Tom Jody, marketing manager for VAC-CON. “From the beginning, the team at Freightliner Trucks had a genuine interest in this concept, and in its success.” The truck will include an Allison 3000RDS transmission for optimum performance and efficiency. The ideal transmission for alternative fuel vehicles, Allison transmissions include patented torque converter technology that results in improved startability at the launch of the vehicle, full power shifts, and a better performing engine.
ROAD TODAY DECEMBER 2010
The Freightliner M2 112V also features a 2,500 square-inch windshield for enhanced visibility; outstanding maneuverability; and a roomy interior for exceptional driver comfort. “VAC-CON strives to provide our customers with the best blend of cleaning equipment and chassis, and because our focus is on the cleaning equipment, it makes our relationship with Freightliner Trucks extremely important,” said Jody. “The CNG project was truly a partnership and we look forward to continuing our work with Freightliner to further refine this and other natural gas products.”

MTO Announces Rules for Commercial Vehicles When Vehicle Impoundment Law Takes Effect December 1st
T
he Ontario Government has announced that when its law designed to get tough on people caught driving with a suspended licence by impounding their vehicle for seven days comes into force on December 1st, commercial vehicles will be treated differently than cars. Under the regulations announced by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) if the driver of a commercial vehicle is caught driving under an HTA-related suspension, including default of family support, the vehicle will not be subject to a 7-day impoundment if the driver’s licence has been suspended for less than 100 days. As a result, any carrier that checks the status of their drivers’ licences every three months should be able to catch any suspended drivers in time to ensure that they do not run the risk of having their equipment impounded. OTA President David Bradley reacted to the release of the new regulations by saying that, “the new rules provide a reasonable balance between ensuring that carriers do their due diligence to ensure that their drivers are properly licensed and recognizing that it’s simply impractical to expect them to verify the status of all of their drivers every single day.”

Peel Goods Movement Conference
The Peel Goods Movement Task Force brought together 300 private and public sector leaders to discuss goods movement in Peel Region and the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The conference, “Delivering the Goods: Meeting Freight Challenges through Partnerships and Innovation” held on November 3rd at Walmart Canada’s head office in Mississauga was a major milestone for the Task Force as it works to improve how goods are moved. The Peel Goods Movement Task Force is a partnership of private and public sector stakeholders involved in the movement of goods within Hon. Kathleen Wynne, Ontario and through Peel Minister of Transportation Region. The Task Force was established to foster collaboration, communication and action on goods movement issues. Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Minister of Transportation, highlighted the need to both partner and innovate to move people and goods in better ways and to build a modern transportation system that will benefit Peel, Ontario and Canada. Minister Wynne cited
the development of the Ontario-Quebec Continental Gateway and Trade Corridor Strategy as a collaboration that brought together transportation service providers, shippers, municipalities, transportation authorities and other stakeholders to plan how to connect Ontario and Quebec to North America and the rest of the world in new, dynamic, productive and sustainable ways. Minister Wynne also spoke to the success of the Long Combination Vehicle (LCV) Pilot Program, noting that there have been more than 17,000 LCV trips in the Wi n d s o r - G TAQuebec corridor and that industry Emil Kolb, Peel Regional Chair and Chair of sees the benefits an the Peel Goods Movement Task Force. road expansion projects and support for Pearson International Airport, a major rail intermodal terminal, and the LCV Pilot Program. Leslie Woo, Metrolinx Vice President, spoke to Metrolinx’s goal of fundamentally transforming how people and goods move across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). While addressing the impacts of congestion, Ms. Woo noted that the annual cost of congestion in the GTHA in 2006 was $6 billion (and that, if nothing is done to improve the transportation system, these costs could rise to $15 billion by 2031). Ms. Woo also noted that Metrolinx is developing a GTHA Urban Freight Strategy that will complement the Ontario-Quebec Continental Gateway and Trade Corridor Strategy. Gerald Rawling, a freight consultant, spoke to the formation and ongoing work of Chicago’s Intermodal Advisory Task Force, providing lessons and encouragement for the Peel Goods Movement Task Force. Mario Iacobacci, Director of Economics at AECOM, spoke about productivity growth in Canada’s freight modes. Industry and government panel discussions addressed challenges and opportunities for the movement of goods in Peel and the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Key points raised include: t Congestion and the unpredictability of traffic delays are major issues that hinder economic competiveness; t Delays at the Canada-United States border need to be reduced; t Optimizing the use of existing transportation infrastructure and making targeted investments in new infrastructure are critical; t Innovative solutions will need to be developed; and t Industry and government need to work together to address goods movement issues. Drive Safely This Winter Season Winter Driving Tips for Motorists As Ontarians begin another Canadian winter, motorists need to take extra precautions and adjust their driving habits to cold, icy and snowy conditions. The Ministry of Transportation’s Winter Driving booklet provides driving tips for winter road conditions. For example,
roof • Double your distance from the vehicle ahead - it takes longer to stop on slippery roads • Be visible - switch on the vehicle’s full lighting system in poor weather or low light conditions. Do not rely on the vehicle’s daytime running lights The booklet includes other tips on winter driving and information about technical improvements that are being made by the government to manage snow-covered and icy roads. Get up-to-date information on road conditions, constructionprojects and traffic conditions on major highways through MTOcameras. Or call the ministry’s road information line at 416235-4686, toll-free at 1-800-268-4686.
QUICK FACTS
• Each year in Ontario, there are 60,000 traffic collisions during the winter months, many involving motorists who fail to adjust their driving habits to weather conditions. • In Northern Ontario, residents and visitors staying less than 30 days (between October 1 and April 30) can legally use studded tires during the winter months to help with braking on slippery surfaces. • Using winter tires in good condition provides better traction and handling and can shorten braking distances by as much as 25 per cent.
drivers should remember to: • Plan ahead - make sure that your vehicle is “winter ready” with a maintenance check-up • Keep your vehicle in good working order - be sure to keep your gas tank at least half full, top up your windshield uid, and clear snow and ice from windows, lights, mirrors and

CarriersEdge Celebrates Fifth Anniversary With Exponential Growth Through Recession More than 100,000 served in first five years
C
arriersEdge, the provider of online driver improvement tools recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of its launch in the Canadian marketplace, serving out more than 100,000 training modules to drivers across the country. Originally launched in the fall of 2005 with a basic set of safety and compliance titles, CarriersEdge now includes more than 40 modules, in English and French, covering both Canadian and U.S. regulations and industry best practices. “We’re delighted to see so many Canadian fleets integrating CarriersEdge into their training programs and we’re extremely pleased to celebrate five years of serving the industry”, said Mark Murrell, President of CarriersEdge. “We’ve been growing steadily at about 70% year-over-year through the recession, and most of that has come from referrals and recommendations. As we continue to expand the library with more titles - like the recently released Winter Driving course - we expect that growth to continue.” The CarriersEdge online driver improvement system includes training modules covering hot topics such as defensive driving, hours of service, vehicle inspection, and dangerous goods, along with professional development topics like owner-op business skills, driver wellness, and fuel efficiency.

Transport Institute and TransCore Release Initial Research Findings on Spot Market Freight
T
he University of Manitoba Transport Institute and TransCore Link Logistics have announced the initial results from their joint research project looking at Canadian trucking and logistics trends using TransCore’s Loadlink® freight matching data. This will be the first installment in a four-part educational series. Loadlink’s database constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries. Over 13 million full loads, LTL (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually. As a result of this high volume, TransCore’s data is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight movement and provides a historical account of the domestic and cross border traffic. This data is also used on a monthly basis for the Canadian Freight Index. “Using this unique data set provides us a particularly compelling view into the Canadian logistics market,” said Paul Larson, director of the Transport Institute at the University of Manitoba. “Observations that in the past might have been more intuitive in nature are now backed with qualitative and quantitative assessment, both confirming and expanding our understanding of the dynamics at play in the Canadian market. This information also supports UMTI’s commitment to the Innovative Freight Practices project to reduce empty backhaul miles and GHGs.” TransCore’s Link Logistics General Manager Claudia Milicevic adds, “By identifying patterns of freight movement within Canada and across the U.S. border, Canadian transportation companies can make valuable insights to improve their operating efficiencies. It can also assist carriers with better load planning by optimizing their trip scheduling and reducing empty miles.” Research Results - highlights from initial findings include: • Postings originating in the United States bound for Canada amounts to more than 61 percent of total freight volume and 39 percent of equipment volume. • Outbound postings from Canada to the United States accounts for 13 percent of load volumes and 31 percent of equipment volumes. • Domestic freight within Canada is 21.8 percent and equipment is 30 percent. • The top sources of freight by province or state are (in descending order):

And, New York. • The top twelve freight destinations by province or state are (in descending order): 1. Ontario, 2. Quebec, 3. Alberta, 4. British Columbia, 5. Manitoba, 6. Saskatchewan, 7. New Brunswick, 8. New York, 9. Nova Scotia, 10. Texas, 11. Pennsylvania, 12. California. • The top five source cities for freight are: 1. Greater Toronto Area – including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton & Concord 2. Montreal, 3. Calgary, 4. Edmonton, 5. Chicago. • The top five destination cities for freight are: 1. Greater Toronto Area – including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton & Concord 2. Montreal, 3. Calgary, 4. Edmonton, 5. Winnipeg. • Year-over-year load postings have recovered dramatically from the lower than average values of the summer of 2009. Yearto-year postings have increased from 30 percent to 52 percent. • Year-over-year equipment postings have decreased between 12 and 18 percent. • Year-over-year recovery in the loads from July-Sept/09 to July-Sept/10 was greater in the transborder market. The reduction in capacity may be hitting the Canadian domestic market harder than the transborder market. One possible explanation is: since the transborder load market recovery has been proportionally greater than that of the Canadian domestic market, trucks have been diverted to the transborder market at the expense of the Canadian market. • Year-over-year load postings in the domestic Canadian market increased between 30 and 48 percent, whereas domestic equipment postings decreased between 10 and 36 percent. • Year-over-year load postings in the transborder market increased between 29 and 55 percent, whereas equipment postings only decreased by 12 to 20 percent.

The World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) is one of the world’s largest and most respected environmental organizations, whose vision is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. The WWF Climate Savers Program is mobilizing multinational companies to cut their emissions of CO2. The “Climate Savers” companies promise to reduce their CO2-emissions in accordance with an agreement between the WWF, the company and independent technical experts. The agreement between The Volvo Group and WWF will apply for the Volvo Group’s truck companiesMack Trucks, Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks, and UD Trucks, and states that: • The total amount of CO2 emitted during their lifetime by trucks manufactured and sold between 2009 and 2014 will be cut by 13 million tons compared with 2008 models by introduction of cutting edge fuel economy technologies. The amount equals the total amount that is being emitted from Sweden in three months. • Volvo will produce a truck prototype with 20-percent lower fuel consumption than the equivalent 2008 model. • Volvo will be able to offer trucks in the commercial market that run on renewable gas before 2014. • The Volvo Group will also reduce CO2-emissions from its production plants by 0.5 million tons (12 percent) before 2014, compared with 2008. Independent technical experts will annually monitor and oversee that the Volvo Group complies with its undertaking. In 2007, the Volvo Group presented the world’s first CO2-neutral vehicle plant in Ghent in Belgium with wind-generated electricity. The long-term ambition is that all plants will be CO2-neutral.

Signs of Wiper Blade Wear (NC) – Keeping yourself and your family safe on winter roads can be difficult, but did you know that driver’s vision is a factor in more than 40 percent of all vehicle crashes? While there are many factors outside of our control in winter driving, like snowfall and water or slush splashing on the windshield from other traffic, maintaining wiper blades in good repair can provide the best visibility possible and is something cost-effective and easy to address. But how do you know if your blades are in good repair? Many factors can contribute to wiper blade wear, including use, extended exposure to temperature extremes, ozone, road salt, oil and even automatic car washes, according to wiper blade expert Robert Peers. Blades can also become damaged by ice, snow and debris removal. To avoid the risks of driving with limited visibility it is important to recognize the warning signs of wiper blade wear and damage. Streaking Visual inspection of the wiper blade reveals rubber that has hardened and/or cracked due to exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, tree sap, and road tar, automotive chemicals like oil, brake fluid, coolant, and road grit. Bands of water remain after each wiping stroke. Chattering Extreme hot or cold temperatures or extended periods of non-use can cause blades to exhibit chatter. The blades may skip and vibrate. The characteristics to look for include a choppy wiping action or an overall performance set or curve to the blade rubber in one direction and smeared windshield appearance while wiping.
Worn Rubber When the wiping edge of the blade is no longer sharp, but rounded in shape or appearance, the wiper will smear the water across the windshield instead of clearing it off. This causes cloudy
and impaired visibility. Bent Wiper Arm Automatic car washes and the wear and tear that results from aggressive removal of snow and ice build up can cause considerable damage to the wiper arm assembly and blade and negatively impact its performance as the blade loses contact with the windshield. Squeaking The old or worn rubber of the blade does not move quietly across the windshield. Among the choices you have for replacing worn blades, a new hybrid blade has just come on market. Michelin Stealth hybrid wiper blades (www.michelinstealthblade.com), featuring new patent-pending hybrid technology that provides superior contact with the windshield for improved performance, are now available at Costco Canada warehouses.

What If? Not too long ago I was watching a movie called “Invictus”. The movie featured one of my favorite actors Morgan Freeman playing the exceptional Nelson Mandela. The movie basically told the story of how Mandela changed the face of Africa through changing the attitude of one person at a time. It got me thinking about how this might apply to the transportation industry? What if you were the next Mandela? What if you changed just one person’s attitude? Now, I know you’re laughing hysterically in your chair, but take a minute and think about it. The FMCSA is starting the ball rolling by bringing in CSA 2010. By doing that they are putting the awareness on the driver to step up to the plate. Measures like that are usually meant to deal with the bad drivers in our industry, but how many of us are the good ones. What if you were one of the good ones and stepped up to the plate as a true professional driver and promoted the industry. Think of it like this, a friend cleans and cleans his truck and starts to get attention with new chrome bumpers, extras for his truck and so on by the company. So you decide you like the way he is being treated and start doing the same. At some point, you start getting noticed with perks for yourself in the way of special assignments, truck accessories and more. Then another driver starts doing
the same and as the saying goes so on and so on and so on. Now what you’ve done is improved yourself, which improved your company’s image, which improved their client base and driver retention for the future. Can this seriously be done you ask and the answer is yes. You have just changed another person’s attitude and belief system. Now let’s expand that scenario for a larger purpose. What if you not only affected your company with a positive attitude but you affected a whole industry? What if the next time you spoke with someone about our industry you remained positive? Stop the whining and belly aching we hear all the time. If something is wrong about your position at the company see management and offer a positive suggestion to the problem. Let’s assume you’ve influenced the other drivers and they begin to see the industry in a positive light and send that message out to other drivers. Then you will have done the same thing that Nelson Mandela did with Africa. The trick for him is that he used sports to unify the nation. We’ll be using trucks. Now I realize that this is a very optimistic view for the future. I also realize there will be many drivers that don’t care and refuse to participate. That’s fine I can live with that, we’re all human. But what would happen if we changed a portion even as little as 10%. With an industry that has
around 400, 000 drivers nationwide, ten percent can make a big difference. Ten percent would be 40,000 drivers. Suppose it caught on and even more drivers believed that professionalism is worth working for? Let’s say we can positively convert 50%, what would that do for our industry? The effect would be truly amazing. So how do you get started on such a mission? Well you’re not going to do it in a day, a week or even a month. It’s something that will take time and a consistent effort. The secret is not to change everyone, just try to change you. If you’re happy being a driver then show it, otherwise find another job. Try this exercise for the next 30 days; try to speak positively about the industry to other people in day to day conversation. When you find yourself talking negative then your 30 days begins again. If you successfully hit the 30 days then try for another 30 days. It’s said that it takes 21 days for something to become a habit. The second thing to do is to make sure your own house is in order. Are your equipment, attitude and behavior reflecting the industry in a positive way? With CSA 2010 you already have a reason to be better, but I ask you these questions – What if you were the next Mandela for the transportation industry. What if you had the power to change the world? Only time will tell…….. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

ROAD TODAY
DECEMBER 2010
Liberty Linehaul’s Brian Taylor Becomes OTA Chairman
B
Living Proof That Small Carriers Have a Voice
rian Taylor, founder and president of Liberty Linehaul Inc., has been named chairman of the board of directors of the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) for the 2010-12 term. Brian formed Liberty Linehaul in 1987 as an LTL and truckload carrier specializing in international freight between Canada and the United States. The company currently has a fleet of 48 tractors and 95 trailers operating out of its Ayr, ON terminal. In 1997, a subsidiary company, Liberty Linehaul West Inc., which operates out of Montebello, California, was established. Shortly after starting the company, Brian joined the Ontario Trucking Association. He recalls that one of his first roles with OTA was to become involved in what became known as the “wheel-off crisis” of the mid-1990s, where he drew on his background as a former mechanic to try and help find solutions. Shortly thereafter he was elected to the OTA board and was ultimately appointed to the association’s executive committee. In recent years, Brian has also become a member of the Canadian Trucking Alliance board of directors. “I have always felt it is important that carriers support their industry through OTA,” he says. “As a small carrier I was pretty intimidated when I was first elected to the board; but the rest of the board -- including the big carriers -- was very welcoming. I remember feeling somewhat amazed that my opinion counted and still does.” OTA president, David Bradley, says that is “just Brian being his modest self. He impressed everybody right from the beginning and earned their respect for his balanced, thoughtful and progressive approach to issues.” Brian says he doesn’t think he needs to be an advocate for small carriers, since most of OTA’s members are small carriers already but he is living proof that “it is not how many trucks you have that determines your influence, it’s what you have to say and your commitment to improving the industry that counts.” He says “there are some small carriers out there that may have some preconceived notions about OTA that are simply not reflective of the reality. Everyone has a voice at OTA.” He also says that “having the opportunity to network with so many successful carriers – small or large -- has certainly helped my business, no question.” As for his chairmanship at OTA, Brian says that he will
continue the progressive agenda the association has staked out over the past several years. “I think the policy groundwork has been laid,” he says. “The pursuit of measures to make all operators accountable in terms of safety and practical actions to reduce GHG emissions through improved fuel efficiency will continue to be a key focus. OTA will be pro-active both provincially and with CTA in helping Brian Taylor to shape the new EOBR standards, GHG reduction regulations, etc.” One area that Brian feels is deserving of more attention is the relationship between carriers, shippers and 3PLs and the obligations of the parties to each other. “I believe strongly that where third parties add value to the equation in terms of cartage services, warehousing or other value-added services, then everyone benefits.” He says his company has fostered excellent, long-term relationships with those sorts of 3PLs. However, he says “where the 3PL’s role is purely transactional, there simply isn’t enough profit in the system to warrant more fingers in the pie.” He is also concerned about “the lack of balance in many current contracts and the disrespect afforded the conditions of carriage by some shippers.” Finally, Brian says he also intends to continue the dialogue on what needs to be done to recruit and retain quality people in the industry. ‘At Liberty we have many long-term customers because we strive to give them more than they expect in terms of service and we accomplish this by hiring and training the best people available. We provide our drivers and other employees with the best equipment maintained to our exacting standards. We realize the value of great people. We commit to give them a safe, clean work environment where they will receive fair compensation, realistic assignments and recognition for good performance.” “For the industry as whole, I really think we have a great future. As the economy turns back up, I think there is a lot of opportunity for people and businesses in our field,” he says. Brian’s wife, Lorna, is a former trucking company owner. They have 4 grown children and five grandchildren. Both Brian and Lorna are avid golfers and Brian also plays old-timers hockey.

Canada, “My wife is a software expert but I’m into the media line which is not so well-paying abroad. So I’ve signed up for Yoga classes and for the next three months I’ll perfect my asanas, so that I can make some money when we finally move.

On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.
OUT OF ACTION? Actor Nagma
End of her political career? When the controversy
erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.
Personal relationships not working out:
I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to. The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft. Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

HOV lanes open on QEW between Burlington and Oakville Ontario Government Easing Congestion, Boosting Economy
Drivers in the GTA will enjoy a more efficient and reliable commute on High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes that opened November 29th on the QEW. More than 16 kilometres of High Occupancy Vehicle lanes - the longest stretch in the Greater Toronto Area - are now operational on the QEW between Trafalgar Road in Oakville and Guelph Line in Burlington. They will also ease congestion, encourage carpooling and improve air quality in the region. Since 2007, more than $380 million has been invested to improve and widen the QEW from six to eight lanes, including HOV lanes in both directions. About 4,400 jobs have been generated. What is an HOV Lane? HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes are designed to help move more people through congested areas. HOV lanes offer users a faster, more reliable commute, while also easing congestion in regular lanes - by moving more people in fewer vehicles. Full competition The flight home from a recent business trip was pretty empty. So the pilot made a simple request of the passengers. “We have a little extra room tonight, folks,” he said over the PA system. “So if you wouldn’t mind, please take a window seat so the competition thinks the plane is full.” Surgical error A surgeon goes to return some books he borrowed from the library. The librarian quips after checking the books. “Sir, your books are always returned with the last page missing in every single book.” The surgeon replies, “I can’t stop myself from removing an appendix when ever I see one.” Last wish John was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully. “Give me one last request, dear,” he said. “Of course, John,” his wife said softly. “Six months after I die,” he said, “I want you to marry Bob.” “But I thought you hated Bob,” she said. The Common Cold
Hello everyone! I know that I have discussed the common cold in the past, however a little review never hurts anyone. Now that the weather is changing, our bodies are forced to adjust to the cooler temperatures. Unfortunately, this signals the start of cold season. The common cold can creep up on us at any time and in any season however, it is more prevalent during this time of the year. It is usually a harmless infection in the upper respiratory tract that is more of an annoyance than anything else. In this article, I will discuss the causes, symptoms and treatments of the common cold as well as some simple preventative measures. Let’s get started! Although there are more than 200 different viruses that cause the common cold, the rhinovirus is by far the most common among humans. This virus is highly infectious and contagious. In most cases, the virus enters the body through the mouth or nose usually by means of droplets in the air when an infected individual coughs or sneezes. Another method of transmission is through hand-to-hand contact with someone who has a cold or by using shared objects, such as utensils, towels, toys or telephones. Now that we know what causes the common cold and how it is transmitted, let us discuss the different risk factors. Children are especially susceptible to colds due to their immature immune system. They have yet to develop resistance to most viruses that cause colds. To add to this, they tend to spend a lot of time with other children who
are not always diligent about washing their hands or covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze. As you age, you develop immunity to many viruses that cause common colds. Thus, you will have colds less frequently than you did as a child. Both adults and children are more prone to colds during the fall and winter months when children go back to school and we spend more time indoors. Other common beliefs about how you can catch a cold, such as going outside with wet hair during cold temperatures, are starting to be studied by researchers to determine whether there is any truth to them. I think that it is fairly safe to say that most people are aware of the signs and symptoms associated with a cold. These symptoms usually occur one to three days after exposure to the virus and could include the following; runny/ stuffy nose, itchy/ sore throat, cough, congestion, body aches/ headaches, sneezing, watery eyes, low fever, or mild fatigue. As well, nasal discharge becomes thicker and has a yellowish to greenish colour. Note that the common cold does not usually produce high fevers, extreme fatigue, vomiting, severe headaches, ear pain, and persistent coughing. Colds usually run their course in a week or so, however if symptoms do not begin to clear up within that time frame you should consult your doctor to ensure you do not have a bacterial infection in your lungs, sinuses or ears. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for the common cold at this time. Antibiotics are not effective in treating a cold. Also, over-the-counter medication will not speed up your recovery however, they will help to
43
relieve some symptoms such as a runny nose and coughing. If you do take overthe-counter medication, please ensure you read the labels before driving or using heavy machinery as some medication can cause drowsiness. Finally, here are a few preventative strategies that are simple and easy to do. The easiest and most effective thing you can do to prevent yourself from catching a cold is to wash your hands thoroughly and often, especially before eating. Make sure to wash your hands with warm, soapy water for at least thirty seconds. If you do not have access to water, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is a good alternative. Another thing to keep in mind is to always sneeze and cough into tissues. Always discard used tissues right away and wash your hands carefully. You may also want to consider some dietary supplements such as Vitamin C, Zinc or Echinacea. Although the effectiveness of these supplements is still controversial, some preliminary research has produced promising results. However, make sure to check with your physician before taking any supplements, especially if you are currently taking other prescription medications. Well, that is about all I have to say about the common cold. I think this article gives you a basic understanding about the possible causes and treatments of colds. So next time when you feel under the weather you will know what is going on inside your body. I hope you found this article both informative and interesting. Until next month, drive safely! Happy Holidays!
