elcome to the June 2011 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the award-winning magazine for the changing trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. Team Road Today extends a big THANK YOU to all sponsors, exhibitors, dignitaries, industry friends, volunteers and above all the visitors and attendees for coming out in large numbers to the 3rd annual Road Today Truck Show held at the Powerade Centre in Brampton. It was an event made possible by the overwhelming support from all of you. The truck show season is moving ahead with Stirling Truck Show lined up for the Father’s Day weekend followed by Fergus Show held every fourth weekend in July. Mark your calendars and don’t forget to meet our crew at these shows. Our booths will be loaded with useful giveaways for our valued readers. Ontario’s roads are safer than ever thanks to road safety measures that are saving lives, preventing injuries and reducing collisions. According to the most recent statistics, the number of road-related fatalities was the lowest ever recorded in the province and the lowest in North America. However lot needs to be done. As we enter the busy summer season, drivers are reminded to help keep our roads safe by not drinking and driving, and obeying

the rules of the road. By driving defensively and being on the lookout for impaired, speeding and other dangerous drivers, everyone can help keep Ontario’s roads and waterways safe. The number of drinking drivers involved in fatal crashes is about 60 per cent higher during the summer months. The number of speeding drivers involved in fatal collisions also jumps this time of year, by about 30 per cent. Let’s do our part to make our lives safer by driving sensibly. Ontario is improving the province’s highways, roads and bridges for drivers across the province and creating over 17,000 construction jobs that will help strengthen the economy. The increased construction on our roads and highways means we need to keep road workers safe by being prepared to stop or slow down in construction zones. For updates on summer road construction, readers can call Ministry of Transportation at 1-800-268-4MTO. If you want to reach the Road Today team through social media, we are readily available on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. And don’t forget to tune in to our award winning weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial or listen online at www. goodmorningtoday.ca Drive safe. Always remember: someone back home is waiting for you! See you at the truck shows!

he Cities of Toronto and Hamilton, the Province of Ontario and Fleet Challenge Ontario kicked off the Green Fleet Expo VI at the Courtyard by Marriott in Hamilton on June 2nd. Hundreds of leaders in green fleet technology gathered for the two-day event, which included exhibits from transportation industry vendors, presentations on alternative fuels and electric vehicles, panel discussions on light- and heavyduty vehicles, presentations about green government practices, special green fleet initiatives and the green fleet leadership awards. The popular ride-and-drive opportunity continued to be a success, giving participants the opportunity to test drive the latest electric vehicle technology from Ford, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Mercedes-Benz, to name a few. The guest speaker, Deputy Minister of Transportation Carol Layton, led a panel discussion of four senior officials responsible for green fleet vehicles and technologies for the Province of Ontario. Sponsors for this year’s event include Automotive Resources International and Westport HD. The GFX will return to Toronto in 2012 and will continue to grow as Canada’s premiere event for new and emerging green technology. The City of Toronto is actively implementing the Green Fleet Plan. Toronto has added 117 new green vehicles to its fleet, implemented programs to shut down idling light and heavy-duty trucks and developed the Green Vehicle Evaluation and Selection Tool (GVEST), which assesses environmentally preferred heavy-duty vehicles and is available for all municipalities to use. www.roadtoday.com

Rand McNally IntelliRoute® TND™ Truck GPS now available in Canada

A

s of May, Rand McNally now offers its truck GPS devices for sale throughout Canada. The IntelliRoute TND line is distributed in Canada exclusively by SYNNEX Canada Limited. “Professional drivers in Canada will now be able to access our products at home, rather than coming stateside to make purchases. The IntelliRoute TND has been designed for the North American market with full translation into French and Spanish. In addition, we have features that uniquely address driver needs in Canada, such as the ability to warn of border crossings ahead,” explained Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally. The IntelliRoute TND line was built from the ground up for professional drivers. Beginning with truck-specific navigation from Rand McNally, the units feature a speaker and mounting device designed for truck use, an extra-long power cable, and a suite of specialized Trucker Business Tools to assist drivers in managing the business aspects of trucking. Many of the features in the IntelliRouteTND 510 and 710 units were developed as a direct result of tens of thousands of comments from “Tell Rand,” a unique on-device feature that provides continuous feedback to Rand McNally from the driver community. The units will first be available at Traction, Heavy Duty Parts stores, Lordco – Auto Parts and at Amazon.ca. For more information, call (514) 683-1771 ext. 8935. !

Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 72-hour International Roadcheck from June 7-9

T

ruck and bus safety inspectors will be on the job night and day during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 72-hour International Roadcheck June 7-9, 2011 checking vehicles and their drivers at inspection sites along major highways across North America. In addition, roving patrols will inspect vehicles and drivers traveling other roadways. Since its inception in 1988, the roadside inspections conducted during the annual Roadcheck have numbered over one million, resulting in more than 234 lives saved and 4,293 injuries avoided. It has also provided for the distribution of countless pieces of educational literature and safety events to educate industry and the general public about the importance of safe commercial vehicle operations and the roadside inspection program. Although actual percentage estimates vary, it is widely acknowledged that driver fatigue is a factor in many commercial truck and bus crashes. For this reason, Federal regulations limit the number of both consecutive and cumulative hours a commercial driver may operate his or her vehicle without an off-duty rest period. With the recent increased attention being made relative to driver hours of service and electronic on-board recorders (EOBRs), Roadcheck will emphasize checking driver logbooks and underscore to drivers the importance of maintaining their logbooks, taking breaks, preventing fatigue, and driving without distractions. This year, Roadcheck 2011 will include added emphasis on finding carriers of household goods (HHG) who may be operating “under-the-radar” by using improperly marked rental vehicles and/ or operating as a property carrier rather than HHG carrier.

Escalating Fuel Prices Could Get Even Worse With Federal Biodiesel Mandate Says Consumer Coalition Truckers, bus companies want consumer protection law if mandate goes ahead

F

ollowing the dramatic spike in fuel prices, a coalition of Canadian on-road diesel fuel user associations is raising the alarm over the price impact that a government-imposed biodiesel mandate scheduled to come into force on July 1st of this year will have on their members. The federal government’s own regulatory impact analysis statement (RIAS) said the biodiesel mandate will cost taxpayers $2 ½ billion over the next 25 years and increase pump prices for diesel fuel and reduce the fuel efficiency of commercial vehicles while generating little in the way of GHG reductions. The coalition, which comprises the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), Motor Coach Canada (MCC), which is the national lobby group for bus companies and the Owner-Operator’s Business Association of Canada (OBAC), which represents small independent truck operators, say the national biofuel mandate, if it is to go ahead needs to be amended to provide protection for diesel fuel consumers from prices that exceed those of regular diesel, supply shortages and potential operational issues. They point to individual US states such as Massachusetts and New Mexico, whose biofuel mandates allow for the suspension of the regulations should the price of diesel fuel climb above that of regular diesel fuel. Diesel prices in Canada have been on an upward tear for about two years and recently were within shouting distance of the average price of diesel fuel for 2008, the year that record prices were recorded. Overnight, retail prices of diesel fuel rose by another three cents per litre. Retail prices for diesel have escalated by over 27 per cent over the past year. At the wholesale level (as measured by the average rack price) prices are up by over 30 per cent during the same period. According to the coalition consumer concerns have received short shrift from politicians eager to curry favour with and harvest votes from big agribusiness at the expense of the people and businesses that operate the vehicles that will have to use the fuel. They cite figures from the United States, where various states have introduced biodiesel mandates, showing prices running anywhere from one to eight cents per litre more than regular diesel despite federal subsidies. They argue that the price of canola – expected

to be the prime feedstock for biodiesel in Canada – is already at record prices and volumes. It is common knowledge that Canada will need to import about 85 per cent of its biodiesel requirements to meet the demand created by the mandate. Moreover, prices will be vulnerable to all those things that impact on agricultural commodity prices that no one has any control over, such as the weather, floods, etc. It’s not only trucks and buses that will be paying higher prices at the pump as a result of the planned biodiesel mandate. A growing number of car owners are switching to diesel-powered automobiles because of the greater efficiency and lower fuel costs. For these car owners, the biodiesel mandate will further drive up prices and expose individual diesel car owners to fuel that may void there warranties. Just as consumers received protection under the ethanol regulations, similar protections need to be adopted under a biodiesel regulation. “The biodiesel mandate is going to exacerbate the problem of higher fuel costs through increased prices at the pump and through reduced fuel content of biodiesel,” said David Bradley, president and CEO of the 4,500 member trucking alliance. “The only question is by how much. We can’t control some of the things that are currently impacting fuel prices, but we can avoid introducing policies domestically that could make things worse.” Brian Crow, MCC president, says bus companies, like trucking fleets, are worried about the impact the biodiesel mandate will have on the costs of operating a motor coach, as well as on engine durability and operability. Joanne Ritchie, OBAC’s executive director, says the cost increases associated with biodiesel will hurt her members – mostly single-truck operators. “Fuel is the largest single cost component for these small businesses; a few cents either way can be the difference of whether they survive or not. Even the most conservative estimates suggest this regulation will take $4,000 to $6,000 out of my members’ pockets with no opportunity for a payback.” The federal government has in recent years allocated over $2 billion in subsidies to the biofuel industry.

Respect is a two way street, where are you parked? Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.

I

f you are familiar with my steps to becoming a professional driver you will notice that respect is in there with the rest of the steps and although it is not a hard application it is very important. Our industry in general has been trying to get respect from the general public for as long as I can remember. This is partially due to the way many drivers in the early days got their jobs as drivers and that continued into the 90’s and in some regards is still a factor today. We have passed this model down through our kids by telling them to get an education and get a decent job. Our society in general doesn’t regard truck drivers as a skill to be taken seriously, so of course we have no respect. My question to you is, why? I don’t understand how a person can drive a truck in an industry for years themselves and then tell everyone else to go and do something else! If you don’t like the job then go do something else, if you like the profession then why not share that with others. If you don’t respect yourself then no one else will. Respect comes right down to the way you operate on a day to day basis. If you think that you are just another stupid truck driver then you are telling yourself that you are not as good as the next person and we all know that is not true. Those of you in the industry know how hard it is to do this job, and the information you need to know most people don’t comprehend. Go ahead, next time you sit down with your friends and family start telling them about hours of service regulations, distributing the weight properly on a trailer to run legal, or the science behind specking a trailer with 10’-1’ spread. If they are still sitting there when you finish they will be amazed, if they have left then they don’t feel adequate because they don’t understand any of that. You have to be a smart cookie to be a truck driver in this day and age and as has been shown in many statistics the weak don’t make it for long. Respect is so important that it translates into everything you do. So

what is the secret to gaining more them a helping hand, of it and being seen as a world everyone was new once. class operator? Think of it this way, The secret is you! CTA Urges CVSA to Count “Screen/Triage” Inspections Only way to accurately, fairly assess carrier, industry performance

I

n a discussion paper recently submitted to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) insists that anytime a commercial vehicle is required to enter a truck inspection station or is stopped by a mobile enforcement unit -- even if it is only a quick check, or what the enforcement community calls a “screen” or “triage” inspection to make sure the driver and vehicle are safe to continue down the road – an inspection should be deemed to have taken place and be recorded on the carrier’s profile as a passed inspection. CTA, a federation of the provincial trucking associations representing about 4,500 Canadian motor carriers, says it is sensitive to CVSA’s desire to utilize state and provincial inspection resources most efficiently by attempting to select for more thorough inspection (CVSA level I, II or III) those carriers/vehicle/drivers most likely to have deficiencies. However, it says the systems used to rate carriers – such as CSA in the United States or provincial carrier monitoring systems in Canada -- must accurately reflect a carrier’s inspection performance in a true context of exposure. To do this, it is critical that all inspections, including screen/triage inspections, are documented, says the trucking alliance. In its submission, CTA cites an example of a carrier, whose trucks operate mainly along a major highway and which therefore have a high rate of exposure to a truck inspection station – say 100 a day. Of those 100 trucks, 98 are screened/triaged and then sent on their way to destination leaving only 2 subject to further inspection. Of the 2 trucks that undergo a CVSA level 1, II or III inspection, one passes with no out-of-service defects and one has defects. Because CVSA currently only tracks inspections that

generate reports, the out-of-service rate for the carrier on paper for that day is 50%. In reality, CTA argues, the failure rate should be 1% because 99 of the company’s 100 trucks were deemed fit and sent down the road. CTA estimates that in Canada about 96 of every 100 trucks that are “screen/triaged” are sent on their way without any documentation or recording of the event -- an important statistic and one that should be reflected when reporting on the safety and mechanical fitness of the industry. While some enforcement personnel argue that a “screen/ triage” inspection is simply that, a quick glance -- nothing more and no credit can or should be given, CTA maintains that even in the short time it takes to conduct a screen/triage inspection – usually 35-40 seconds -- a significant amount of intelligence is gathered on the driver and the vehicle. It argues many of the fundamentals of driver and vehicle inspections found in CVSA Level 1, 2 & 3 inspections are performed in that short period of time and that CVSA-trained officers interact with trucks and drivers 24/7, 365 days a year; they are professionals and know what they are looking at. CTA acknowledges importance of the screen/triage inspections in keeping the flow of truck traffic moving through the inspection stations. The more formal CVSA inspections require an estimated 15-20 minutes to generate an inspection report, so drivers and carriers would not support a protocol that would have their trucks sitting for longer periods of time simply to generate a piece of paper.

OTA Gives Thumbs Up to MTO Transition Strategy for New Periodic Mandatory Inspections Standard

S

tarting this July the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) will be adopting the national safety code standard for periodic mandatory vehicle inspections of trucks, trailers and converter dollies. The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) has now given its thumbs up to MTO’s enforcement strategy that although the national standard will take effect by regulation on July 1, 2011, carriers will be able – for the first 24 months – to choose to inspect vehicles according to either the current requirements (as per Regulation 611 Schedules 1, 2 and 4, as they were in effect June 30, 2011); or, they can conduct inspections according to the new requirements contained in the national standard. “The two-year period will allow the industry to become familiar with the new inspection criteria and to incorporate them into their safety management systems,” said OTA president, David Bradley. “This should lead to an orderly, well-planned transition to the new requirements.”

Wajax Announces Acquisition of Harper Power Products Business

W

ajax Corporation has announced that its Wajax Power Systems division has acquired the assets of Harper Power Products Inc. for $21.6 million, subject to post-closing adjustments. For the year ended December 31, 2010, Harper had adjusted annual sales of approximately $71 million. Wajax Power Systems will assume the operation of Harper’s 10 branches in Ontario located in Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Sudbury, Timmins, Kingston, Cornwall, Niagara Falls and Pembroke. Harper is the authorized Ontario distributor for Detroit Diesel, Mercedes-Benz, MTU and Deutz engines, MTU onsite generator sets and Allison transmissions. With the exception of Deutz engines, Wajax Power Systems is presently the authorized distributor of these lines in the rest of Canada except for portions of British Columbia. This business will be rebranded as Wajax Power Systems. The business and assets of Harper Truck Centers Inc., a separately operated

on-highway truck dealer in the Greater Toronto Area, and Harper’s Thomas Built Bus business, were not included in the purchase transaction. Commenting on the acquisition, Neil Manning, President and CEO stated: “This is a very significant acquisition for Wajax Power Systems. Through Harper’s established business, we are gaining a significant presence in the Ontario market where we previously had limited coverage. It also represents a major step towards attainment of the division’s strategic objective to become a national total power systems solution provider.” Wajax is a diversified corporation that has three core distribution businesses engaged in the sale and after-sales parts and service support of mobile equipment, industrial components and power systems, through a network of 118 branches across Canada. Its customer base spans natural resources, construction, transportation, manufacturing, industrial processing and utilities.

Wakefield Canada launches H2Blu Diesel Exhaust Fluid

W

akefield Canada has launched H2Blu, its new Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to the Canadian HD marketplace. H2Blu is formulated with an emphasis on purity and performance providing Canadian carriers with consistent product reliability. The purity of H2Blu enables users to realize the substantial benefits from SCR Technology engines. Such benefits as improved fuel performance by up to 5%, less heat and fewer contaminants in engine components and meeting EPA and Canadian Emissions Standards.

Broad distribution via Wakefield Canada’s existing HD and expanding fleet distribution networks assure availability right across the country. This distribution network will build product availability continuously as the demand for DEF increases in the immediate future driven by new vehicles meeting the EPA’s January 2010 specs replacing older vehicles on the road. H2Blu is being offered through Wakefield as follows: 9.46 L/2.5 gallon jug 208L/55 gallon drum 1040 L / 275 gallon tote Bulk

To ensure product purity and quality, all larger packages have closed Micro Matic systems. H2Blu diesel exhaust fluid is a premium quality product guaranteed to be pure. Wakefield Canada tests the product at several stages throughout the manufacturing and delivery process and verifies every batch. Wakefield uses closed systems on drums and totes and tests bulk with the customer at delivery to ensure purity and engine performance meeting EPA and Canadian emissions standards. H2Blu meets ISO 22241 and has been API certified and carries the API label (If any DEF product does not carry the API certification label, its quality is not guaranteed to meet the API specs.) Effective January 2010, the EPA set new standards for diesel emission standards in North America. These have greatly limited the allowable NOx levels, to be emitted from all diesel vehicles –trucks of all classes, passenger cars, machinery, etc. These requirements have been legislated so that all new road vehicles with diesel engines, from 2010 on, will have new engines with technology that will ensure the emission standards are met Most diesel engine manufacturers have focused on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from diesel exhaust. SCR uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and a catalytic converter to achieve the allowable standards. DEF is defined as AUS 32 (Aqueous Urea Solution 32%) made from 32.5% high purity urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. DEF is easily compromised in terms of quality therefore extreme care must be taken in handling and storing to ensure it does not get contaminated. Impurities will cause the fluid not to work properly; even one teaspoon of salt can contaminate a 20,000 L tanker full of DEF.

Next one After a young couple brought home their new baby, the wife suggested that her husband should try his hand at changing diapers. “I’m busy,” he said. “I’ll do the next one.” The next time came around and she asked again. The husband narrowed his eyes as he looked at his wife. “I didn’t mean the next diaper. I meant the next baby.” Mental case Mad men are given a test to check their mental state. The instructor draws a door on the wall and orders them to go out. They start rushing to the door but one remains sitting. The instructor goes to him and asks; “why didn’t you join the others?” He replies, “Let them fight, they forgot I have the keys”. Passing by From a passenger ship, one could see a bearded man on a small island, shouting and desperately waving his hands. “Who is it?” a passenger asked the captain. “I’ve no idea. CONSTIPATION Dr Christopher H. Singh Chiropractor, runs Trans Canada Chiropractic at 230 Truck Stop in Woodstock, Ont. He can be reached at 519-421-2024 E-mail: chris_singh@sympatico.ca

B

y definition, constipation is simply infrequent bowel movements or difficult passage of stools. It is a very common condition which effects most people at some time during their life time. The good news is that most cases of constipation are temporary and are alleviated with simple lifestyle modifications. Due to their lifestyle and job demands, professional truck drivers are more prone to developing this condition. N o r m a l frequency of bowel movements varies from person to person. However, passing less than three stools a week is a good indication that you may be experiencing constipation. Other symptoms of constipation include: • Hard and dry stool • Incomplete evacuation after having a bowel movement • Excessive straining during bowel movements The most common cause of constipation is slowly moving stool through the digestive track. This causes the stool to become hard and dry. There are several factors that can cause an intestinal slowdown which include inadequate fluid or dehydration, low fiber diet, ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement and lack of physical activity. Medical conditions such as stroke, diabetes

and Parkinson’s disease may also cause constipation. In rare cases, constipation may occur as a result of a more serious medical condition such as cancer or autoimmune diseases. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience unexplained constipation or change in bowel habits that last longer than three weeks. Also see your doctor if

you experience intense abdominal pain, blood in your stool, rectal pain or unexplained weight loss. In most cases, your doctor will be able to diagnose your constipation by taking a detailed medical history and performing a physical examination. More sophisticated diagnostic testing such as barium enema X-ray and abdominal ultrasound are usually reserved for severe cases. The treatment of constipation is usually very simple. Changes in diet and lifestyle can reduce and often alleviate the condition. Firstly, eat a diet which is high in fiber as it helps your body form soft bulky stool. It is recommended that you eat at least 20-35 grams of fiber each day. Good sources of fiber include beans, whole

43

grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. Try to reduce your intake of meats and processed foods. Physical activity and adequate fluid intake are also important in stimulating intestinal activity. Finally, do not ignore the urge to have a bowel movement. If diet and lifestyle modifications are unsuccessful, your doctor may recommend some form of laxative. There are several types which include fiber supplements, stimulants, stool softeners and osmotics. All of which are designed to treat the underlying causes of your constipation. Alternative therapies such as massage and acupuncture may also be helpful in the treatment of constipation. However, make sure to consult with your doctor before beginning any of these therapies. As you can see, in most cases constipation is more of an annoyance than a serious medical condition. However, left untreated, it may lead to other more serious physical ailments. After reading this article, it should be quite obvious that professional truck drivers have many of the risk factors of constipation. As a result, it is important for you to make the necessary lifestyle modifications in order to minimize your chances of developing this condition. Until next month, drive safely.
