elcome to the May 2011 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the award-winning magazine for the changing trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. The 3rd Annual Road Today Truck Show is all set to roll out from the Powerade Centre in Brampton on May 28th and 29th. The show is shaping up to be the premier event for the trucking industry and has something for everyone involved in trucking. The event will present an excellent opportunity to interact directly with the industry experts and thus gain valuable knowledge essential for business and individual growth. We extend a cordial invitation to our readers to visit the truck show along with families. The entry and parking is absolutely FREE. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has posted a proposed regulatory change to the Drive Clean Program. Under the proposed new regulations the requirement for the first emissions test would be extended from five to seven years for all vehicles, including heavy duty trucks, effective September 1, 2011. Road Today welcomes this initiative recognising the greening of technology present in today’s modern heavy trucks. Roadcheck 2011, the largest targeted

enforcement program on commercial vehicles in the world is approaching fast. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance will hold its annual Roadcheck event in North America from June 7 to 9. The 72-hour event will bring roadside inspectors to more than 1,000 checkpoints on highways across North America to monitor truck compliance with safety regulations. Road Today strongly supports such initiatives targeted at various elements of motor carrier, vehicle, driver and cargo safety and security. Team Road Today has always been at the forefront to raise awareness of road user safety issues. In this regard we would be organizing a chain of events as a part of Road Safety Challenge 2011 to make Ontario’s roads the safest in the world. Look out for some unique road safety promotion initiatives when you visit the Road Today Truck Show including the OPP roll over simulator. If you want to reach the Road Today team through social media, we are readily available on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. And don’t forget to tune in to our award winning weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial or listen online at www. goodmorningtoday.ca Drive safe. Always remember: someone back home is waiting for you! See you at the Road Today Show! Manan Gupta Editor

Kenworth T700 with PACCAR MX Engine Named ATD Heavy Duty Commercial Truck of Year

T

he aerodynamic Kenworth T700 equipped with the lowemission PACCAR MX engine was named the 2011 Heavy Duty Commercial Truck of the Year by the American Truck Dealers (ATD) at the annual ATD Convention and Expo in Phoenix. “It’s a great honor for Kenworth Truck Company to receive the prestigious Heavy Duty Commercial Truck of the Year award presented by the American Truck Dealers,” said Bill Kozek, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. The winner was selected by a judging panel of journalists from leading truck publications in North America. Major judging criteria included innovation, design, driver and owner satisfaction, ease of maintenance, and safety. The T700 is the latest evolution in Kenworth’s distinguished history of industry-leading, fuel-efficient trucks. Designed through the extensive use of computational fluid dynamics, Kenworth optimized the T700’s aerodynamic integration while carefully sculpting a distinctive, eye-catching appearance. As a result, the Kenworth T700 has the lowest aerodynamic drag of any Kenworth truck in company history, and has earned Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay program certification. In addition to modern aerodynamic styling, the T700 has best in class forward lighting and excellent serviceability features. The Kenworth T700 targets over the road and team driver operations with its excellent driver comfort features. The T700’s spacious, wide cab has nearly 30 inches between the driver and passenger seats for convenient access to the 75-inch AERODYNE® sleeper and its soaring 8-foot cathedral ceiling. The roomy interior provides an industry-leading, 60-plus cubic feet of storage space. The PACCAR MX engine is available with a horsepower range of 380-hp to 485-hp and torque up to 1,750 lb-ft on selected Kenworth Class 8 models. This power range, combined with excellent fuel efficiency, high reliability and durability, lightweight design, and low cost of ownership, makes the PACCAR MX engine an ideal choice for Kenworth customers operating in many overthe-road, pickup and delivery, and vocational applications. The PACCAR MX engine employs innovative high strength, yet lightweight components and premium material to achieve superior durability and power-to-weight performance. The technologically advanced design reduces in-cab noise levels significantly for a more

comfortable driving environment. The very low-emission PACCAR MX engine achieves U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification, and meets the stringent emission standards of 0.2 grams per brake horsepower hour of NOx and 0.01 grams per brake horsepower hour of particulate matter.

Canada Post Adds Navistar’s eStar All-Electric Trucks to Its Fleet

O

n the heels of announcing it had purchased the first fully electric small delivery vehicles, Canada Post has now added the first all-electric step vans in Canada to its fleet. The corporation recently showcased the first of four all-electric commercial vehicles built by Navistar. The eStar™, a Class 2c-3 electric truck and the first in its category, has a range of 160 kilometres (100 miles) per charge and can be fully recharged within 6 to 8 hours. With zero tailpipe emissions, each eStar truck can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 10 tons annually. The windshield design provides nearly 180-degree visibility, the lowfloor design allows easy loading/unloading and the noise level is nearly non-existent. Unlike other electric trucks that are reconfigured models of fossil-fuel trucks, the eStar truck has been purpose-built for electric power, providing a competitive advantage with a low centre of gravity (the battery is between the frame rails, not mounted on top) and a 36-foot turning radius. The eStar is engineered with superior aerodynamics, a walk-though cab and a quick-change cassette-type battery that can be swapped out in 20 minutes, enabling around the clock operation. It is capable of carrying payloads up to two tons. The eStar all-electric truck transitioned from concept to reality in August 2009, when President Barack Obama visited Navistar’s manufacturing plant in Indiana to announce $39.2 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the

Transportation Electrification Initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The race will take place on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 with the green flag flying at 8:00 pm. As one of NASCAR’s top stars, Kyle is a driver whom many fans love to hate for his hot temper mixed with magic on the track. ExpoCam crowd sets record! V

isitor attendance at ExpoCam 2011 – Canada’s National Truck Show was up by over 10 percent compared with the 2009 show and broke the overall crowd record. ExpoCam, which ran from April 7 to 9 at Place Bonaventure in downtown Montreal attracted over 13,500 vistors and exhibitors – close to 1,000 more than 2009 and a boost from the previous record in 2007. Newcom Show Manager Joan Wilson says the turnout was higher than expected and she interpreted the strong showing as a clear signal that the economic tide has turned.

Over 230 companies exhibited at the show. “The exhibitor support for ExpoCam proves once again that no matter how technology and communication change, nothing beats face-to-face interaction for meeting with prospects and getting deals done,” stated Joe Glionna, general manager, Newcom Media Quebec. More than 20 manufacturers launched new products and services at ExpoCam 2011, chief among them Caterpillar, which decided on ExpoCam for the Canadian debut of its brand new CT 660 truck. Ontario Trucking Association Helps Launch Trucks For Change Network T

rucks For Change Network, a newlyformed not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the trucking industry to develop and promote positive social change in communities, is pleased to announce that the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) is the first trade association to become a charter member. The mission of Trucks For Change Network is to help its membership of for-hire and private truck carriers to assist community charities in an efficient way. Using real-time freight matching and donation management technology, Network members can quickly identify charity needs which they can accommodate, and offer their transportation and logistics services on a donated or preferred cost basis. “It’s a matter of being in the right place at the right time with the right capacity”, says Pete Dalmazzi, former trucking industry executive and founder and president of Trucks For Change Network. “Every time our system matches available capacity from a member trucking firm with the needs of a charity client, we improve the charity’s bottom line, and contribute to the great work they do in our communities. Filling extra truck space with charitable freight reduces the trucking industry’s carbon footprint associated with empty miles. What’s more, by providing affordable transportation, we often make possible the delivery of donated items to charity that would otherwise end up in landfill sites, further contributing to a sustainable environment. We’re thrilled to have the OTA supporting our efforts”. Membership to Trucks For Change Network is currently available to all Ontario Trucking Association carrier members. OTA members and registered charities wishing to learn more about Trucks For Change Network membership and services should visit www.trucksforchange.org. www.roadtoday.com

Changes to Drive Clean Reflect Greening of Trucking Industry says OTA

T

he Ontario Ministry of the Environment has posted a proposed regulatory change to the Drive Clean Program on the Province’s Environmental Registry for comments over the next 30 days. Under the proposed new regulations the requirement for the first emissions test would be extended from five to seven years for all vehicles, including heavy duty trucks, effective September 1, 2011. The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) has applauded the move by the Province to extend the testing period by two years pointing out that the fact that heavy duty vehicles were included in the changes is recognition of the greening of technology present in today’s modern heavy trucks. With the evolution of the near-zero emission engine through Environment Canada regulations the need for programs like Drive Clean become less and less relevant. For some years now the OTA has been arguing that with the significant changes to truck engines over the last ten years the industry has reached a point where trucks should not be seen as gross polluters. This policy move by the Province of Ontario is part of this growing recognition by governments at all levels. Since the inception of the Drive Clean Program OTA has worked with the Ontario government to modify the program to recognize investment in green technology by the trucking industry. The latest announcement is the latest modification made by the government to the heavy-duty program.

TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index Sets New All-Time Record

T

ransCore’s Canadian Freight Index sets a new all-time record in March, tops previous record from May 2008. Volumes for March 2011 were up 35 percent from the previous year and 36 percent from the prior month. For the first quarter 2011, volume was up 34 percent compared to the first quarter of 2010 and saw an extraordinary 250 percent increase from March 2009. While load volume reached an all-time high, equipment postings remained at the same low levels recorded for the prior few months. From a historical perspective, available posted equipment was down 24 percent from the lofty capacity levels of March 2009. TransCore’s Loadlink freight matching database constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries and has been available to Canadian subscribers since its inception in 1990. Over 13 million full loads, LTL (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually. As a result of this high volume, TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight movement and provides a historical account of the domestic and cross border spot market freight movement. The Loadlink network provides Canadian based companies with: • The largest online database of available loads and trucks • Unlimited access to the network and integrated services • Guaranteed payment

Improved Spicer LMS Hub System Delivers Greater Reliability

D

ana Holding Corporation has announced the introduction of a hub system that offers original-equipment and end-user customers value and complexity savings while significantly improving driveline reliability and maintenance time. The new Spicer LMSi incorporates Dana’s industry proven LMS (Low Maintenance System) technology and new integrated features that further enhance end-user and OEM savings and convenience. The LMSi hub was designed using the latest in advanced hub technologies. Major benefits include improved retention clamp load for more reliable performance. LMSi also reduces disassembly and installation times by up to five minutes versus conventional hub systems and enhances ease of removal for improved shop safety. The LMSi supports a more eco-friendly position than other designs through better control of contaminates during removal and best-in-class efficient seal technology. The new seal technology provides reduced friction for minimized rolling resistance delivering improvements in fuel efficiency and a reduction of heat to maximize seal life. Through the use of a standard robust aluminum hub, Spicer LMSi offers customers a 20 pound per hub weight advantage when compared with conventional iron hubs. And like the LMS, the LMSi hub allows Dana to approve the use of tandem drive axles from 38,000 to 40,000 lbs. when using 2-inch outset wheels with wide-base tires. This saves the fleets money and reduces complexity by eliminating the need to specify a more costly, non-standard, widewidth drive axle with unique outset wheels. Spicer LMSi is specifically designed to extend user service intervals to 500,000 miles, and is available for a wide range of axle capacities for both steer and drive axles. LMSi can be OE factory-filled with Roadranger FE 75W-90 Synthetic Lubricants, for further supporting fuel efficiency in drive axle systems. The LMSi hubs are also compatible with Extended Life Roadranger Synthetic Lubes. www.roadtoday.com

Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.

Do I need customer service as an owner operator? Most drivers and owner operators forget the importance of customer service because they don’t feel that they have to deal with the clients directly. They are very wrong and in a big way. If you are an owner operator have you thought about who your clients are in reality? Doing this exercise may surprise you if you take it seriously. So let’s look at how you affect the clients while conducting deliveries and communicating with clients. If you run the open board you may not concern yourself with customer service because many drivers don’t think they will return to that client unless they are on dedicated run. The truth is that any client that ships or receives goods with the company by truck deserves the best customer service available from every driver. In the industry we hear about customer service departments, business executives, and don’t see how we are involved in the important aspects of the client but the truth is that each customer has a number of points of contact that the company will be in contact with them. So what are those points? Usually for any large contracts the top executives or appointed sales force will be involved and that will be the first point and most important in the beginning. That will be the point where all of the negotiations will take place to secure the customer’s freight contract. Once that point is completed it will diminish in contact to a point, but is still a critical point in the process. The next point will be the transport company internal client service department, such as customer service, order management, and so on. This point of contact is also critical and may or may not be in direct contact with the client depending on the order management system. This second point may also be done by a third party such as a load broker or load board service, but is still critical to great client service.

The next point is you, the driver and may be the most critical point of all for the company. You are the live person dealing with another live person and basically could be the face of the company. Whether you are dealing with a receiver on the dock, a shipper in the yard, or phoning the front office for directions you are the face of the

company and should be representing them as such. How you dress, the way you talk, and the ways you act are all important to how the client views your company. Are you pleasant to be around, are you patient when waiting for the load, is your trailer organized and clean? Or are you the opposite, have a filthy trailer, you haven’t showered in a few days, and are tired and grumpy, just a picture of professionalism to be sarcastic. Everyone has a part to play and you need to do yours. But there is one other customer we haven’t discussed and this is the one that can be the most important player of all and also the one that affects your income the most, your company. As an owner operator you are contracted or leased onto your company. That makes your company your main client. That makes dispatch your key contact, and that puts you in a predicament if you can’t get along with them. As mentioned earlier every client has 31

at least three points of contact, the executive level, the order management level, and the shipping /receiving level, or in this case dispatch. The reason most drivers and owner operators don’t think of their dispatch as clients is because they think like truck drivers. As a business owner you need to think like the president of your corporation. Your company or truck is bidding against many other businesses (your fellow drivers) for the same freight and as usual the best lanes pay the best money. And as we all know even though dispatch is suppose to treat everyone the same and not take sides that doesn’t always happen. If they don’t like you, you’re dead! If they don’t respect you or trust you, they wait to see if you will deliver on time before assigning you a return load. And in some cases if they don’t like you they will send you to places that you didn’t even know existed and stop you from getting home for a month. So dispatchers are important people to keep happy. They are your primary point of contact for your company and your own business. So how do you offer great customer service? This will work for any of your customers including the dispatch kind and to sum it up in one word it is SERVICE! Give awesome service to your customers, dispatch, and others and you will be rewarded handsomely. Now I am not going to promise you big money, but my experience in business is it is the little things that make you great. Be on time and reliable; call ahead if delays are possible. Treat everyone with respect and work with them to offer the best service for your clients. Be easy to work with and keep your image clean such as your appearance, and paperwork. Follow up immediately on any issues with a load or client. As I talk about much of the time, take ownership of your position, after all you are the business owner, the customer service agent, and the driver. You are the three points of contact for your company. Act like the professional business that you run! ROAD TODAY

BENDIX LAUNCHES BENDIX WINGMAN ADVANCED New System Combines Adaptive Cruise Control with Braking and Collision Mitigation Technologies

B

endix Commercial Vehicle Systems has launched Bendix Wingman Advanced– A Collision Mitigation Technology. The launch fulfills the next step in the company’s safety technology road map. Bendix Wingman Advanced delivers adaptive cruise control with braking features along with collision mitigation technology. The system builds upon the company’s full-stability technology – Bendix ESP – providing fleets with a system that can help drivers in collisions, rollovers, and loss-of-control situations. Using a radar sensor mounted to the front of the vehicle, Bendix Wingman Advanced delivers both warnings and active interventions to help drivers potentially avoid rear-end collisions or, at least, help reduce their severity. The system provides following distance and stationary object alerts which are always available – whether or not cruise control is engaged. When drivers utilize the adaptive cruise control with braking feature, the system

will also actively intervene to help them maintain a safe following distance behind a forward vehicle by reducing throttle; engaging the engine retarder; or, if necessary, applying the foundation brakes. The collision mitigation feature of Bendix Wingman Advanced provides additional interventions, whether or not cruise control is active, by alerting the driver and automatically applying the brakes to help decelerate the vehicle when the system senses a rear-end collision may be imminent. About two-thirds of the available braking power of the vehicle can be delivered through collision mitigation – compared to about one-third through adaptive cruise control with braking. The driver, of course, still maintains control and can add additional braking or steering inputs to help avoid or minimize the collision situation. Utilizing Bendix Wingman Advanced may help fleets and their drivers in the new CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability)driven environment to maintain a strong safety performance and better scores, which, in turn, may help drive revenue, lower costs, and increase profitability.” Bendix currently is working with International, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, Mack and Prevost to determine timing on the release of Bendix Wingman Advanced through the respective OEMs.

Operation Slo-Mo - A Unique Road Safety Blitz in Hamilton

T

he Hamilton Police Service Station 30 Divisional Safety Officers are working towards creating safer roads through education and enforcement with the launch of Operation Slo-Mo. A 10-month project, which was launched on March 15th, 2011 and operational until to December 15th, 2011, Operation Slo-Mo is focusing on reducing the number of collisions, especially personal injury and fatalities, along the Upper James St. corridor working in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation truck enforcement unit. Upper James St. is a major north/south thoroughfare on the Hamilton Mountain. Over the past three years, four intersections along Upper James St. (Mohawk Rd., the Lincoln Alexander Parkway, Stone Church Rd., Rymal Rd.) were identified by the City of Hamilton as being within the top 20 locations for collisions across the Region. In 2010, there were 24 traffic fatalities in the City of Hamilton with 16 occurring within Division Three, of which three were on Upper James St. Speed is a contributing factor. Studies have shown that the risk of becoming involved in a casualty crash approximately doubles with each 5 km/h increase in travel speed over 60 km/h. Speed will be one of a number of Highway Traffic Act infractions that will be a focus of the initiative with a zero tolerance approach; of concern also will be Visit www.cfmsonline.com stop-light compliance, pedestrian safety or call 877-454-4076 Hilton Suites Toronto/Markham and heavy commercial vehicle fitness. Coast clear It was two o’clock in the morning and a husband and wife were asleep, when suddenly the phone rang. The husband picked up the phone and said, “Hello ... How the heck do I know? What am I, the weather man?” and promptly slammed the phone down. His wife rolls over and asks, “Who was that?” The husband replies, “I don’t know. Some guy who wanted to know if the coast was clear”. Where there is a will The rich, old, dying man called his lawyer to his bedside for the purpose of disposing of his worldly goods. “How many children have you?” the lawyer asked. “That, sir,” said the old-timer, “will be decided by the courts when my will is contested.” Tax trouble A man wrote a letter to the CRA: “I have been unable to sleep knowing that I have cheated on my income tax. I understated my taxable income and have enclosed a check for $200.00. If I still can’t sleep, I will send the rest.” Emergency case The doctor answered the phone and heard the familiar voice of a colleague on the other end of the line. “We need a fourth for poker,” said the friend. “I’ll be right over,” whispered the doctor. As he was putting on his coat, his wife asked, “Is it serious?” “Oh yes, quite serious,” said the doctor gravely. “In fact, three other doctors are there already.”

PATELLAR TENDONITIS- JUMPER’S KNEE At first glance, truck driving may not seem like a profession that would be prone to knee injuries. However, due to the physical demands of their job, many drivers develop painful and sometimes debilitating knee conditions. A common knee injury sustained by drivers is called patellar tendonitis, which is better known as jumper’s knee. This is a condition that affects the tendon that connects your knee cap to your shin bone. The patella tendon functions to help your muscles straighten your knee like when you are walking up or down stairs or kicking a soccer ball. Patellar tendonitis is caused by repeated stress and strain on the tendon. Eventually the stress leads to small tears in the tendon itself. As more and more tears occur, inflammation and pain in the tendon start to appear. For truck drivers, the most common causes of this injury are climbing in and out of trucks, jumping off trailers and long hours operating the clutch and gas pedals. Other risk factors that may affect drivers include tight leg muscles, muscular imbalances and access weight. The first symptom of patellar tendonitis is usually pain just under the knee cap. Initially, the pain will only

be present during physical activity. The pain is usually sharp in nature but disappears once the activity is stopped. As the condition worsens, the pain may become constant. In most cases, the diagnosis of patellar tendonitis is determined based on the patient’s signs and symptoms as well as a physical exam. However, if it is still unclear, diagnostic testing such

as x-rays ultrasound, and MRI may be necessary. It is important for your doctor to rule out other more serious knee conditions. Once a diagnosis of patellar tendonitis is reached, your doctor will discuss possible treatment options. The good news is that most people respond very favorably to conservative treatment and surgery is not usually required. The first mode of treatment is to rest and reducing the amount of strain on the knee. Next, ice and antiinflammatory medications are used to reduce the swelling in the tendon. Massage and gentle stretching are also effective to reduce the pain and

43

irritation. Finally, in the later stages of treatment your doctor may recommend strengthening exercises and body mechanic modification all of which a physical therapist or chiropractor can help you with. If all else fails and no significant improvement is observed after 10 to 12 months of conservative treatment, surgery may be considered. The goal of surgery is to repair any tears or remove severely damaged sections of the tendon. Although you can not completely prevent this condition, you can reduce your risk of developing it. For starters, avoid activities that may put excess strain on the patellar tendon such as jumping off of your trailer. In addition, try to use proper mechanics when getting in and out of your cab i.e. “Three point technique.” Lastly, try to maintain a healthy body weight and perform lower body stretches regularly. As you can see, patellar tendonitis is not a life threatening injury, however, if left untreated, it could develop into a very painful and debilitating condition. Just try to keep some of these simple hints in mind and you will be well on your way to having pain free knees. Until next time, drive safely!
