HOW ABOUT
5% BETTER
FUEL EFFICIENCY?
©2010 Volvo Group North America LLC
VOLVO 2010 SCR ENGINES CAN DELIVER 5% BETTER FUEL EFFICIENCY FOR A BETTER BOTTOM LINE. By creating an SCR engine that knocks NOx down to near-zero levels, Volvo was the first truck manufacturer to earn 2010 certification from both the EPA and CARB. But there’s more good news for your fleet. Testing shows that under everyday driving conditions, this new generation of Volvo engines can deliver 5% better fuel efficiency than our highly efficient EPA ’07 engines. Our No Regen* engines with advanced SCR technology allow optimized engine calibration for better performance and lower fuel consumption. Which makes our EPA 2010 solution the best choice for your bottom line. Volvo. Ahead of everyone’s engines. Including our own. For more information visit www.volvoscr.com or call 1.800.444.RSVP. *With Volvo No Regen engines, passive regeneration happens automatically. For normal on-highway operation, active regeneration is eliminated.

elcome to the November 2010 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the award-winning magazine for the changing trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. The next time you get behind the wheel of your vehicle, think about this sobering statistic – one person dies every three hours on Canadian roads, that’s seven people a day, 2,800 people a year. Another 195,000 people a year are hurt – often seriously. Most of the victims are young drivers or drivers that are 75 and older. And for every person killed or injured, there are a countless of loved ones left to deal with the sudden loss or incapacitation of people they love. Simple actions, such as paying attention while in your vehicle or near a roadway, wearing seat belts, not drinking and driving, not talking on your cell phone or text messaging, can help reduce the number of deaths. Most Canadians wear their seat belts, but those who don’t make up 40 per cent of all traffic deaths. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians can all help by being more careful and by following the rules of the road. We can save lives by rethinking the way we drive. One way to do that is to participate in the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims on November 17. See more
details on Page 15. With cold weather just around the corner, unpredictable driving conditions aren’t far behind. This year, don’t be caught unprepared for winter driving. The effect of winter on your vehicle is easily preventable with a few quick checks. The winter scene will be less hazardous if you follow the suggestions provided by TD Insurance as appearing in a column on Page 29. Road Today Media Group is once again pleased to extend its support to Operation Red Nose - a unique program dedicated against drinking and driving. Essentially, the program is a volunteer driving service provided during the Holiday Season to all drivers who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive their own vehicle. It is an original and free way of getting a safe ride in one’s own vehicle without driving it. For more information on opportunities to participate in Operation Red Nose in Brampton, please refer Page 39. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Good Morning Today’ our award winning weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am for latest trucking and transportation news, laws and regulations. Arrow Truck Sales Launches Back On The Road 2011
A
rrow Truck Sales has announced the launch of Arrow’s Back On The Road 2011 campaign, presented by Volvo Trucks North America. Now in its fourth year, Back On The Road is an initiative designed to benefit a deserving trucker in need of a truck and a job. Country music singer Aaron Tippin is once again lending his support to the program, and will serve an active role throughout the search, including helping select the winner. “Truckers are the backbone of our nation’s economy,” said Steve Clough, president of Arrow Truck Sales. “We’re proud to help a deserving driver climb back in the cab and start hauling again.” Beginning immediately, Arrow will solicit stories from truckers across the nation who may have lost their truck, and their livelihood, through unfortunate circumstances beyond their control. The 2011 campaign will also consider nominations for truckers who have, selflessly, served as champions for the profession and the trucking industry in general. The trucker whose story is selected will receive a one-year lease on a Volvo VNL tractor, courtesy of Volvo Trucks North America, a one-year work agreement with Heartland Express, and other great products and services. “Winning Back On The Road was the best thing that could have happened to me and my family,” said Robert Snyder, Arrow’s 2010 Back On The Road winner. “I now have a steady income, a great truck, and I get to see more of my family. I encourage anyone with a worthy story to apply.”

is to participate in the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims on November 17. “We’re asking Canadians to take a moment to remember victims, their families and friends, and to ask themselves what they can do to prevent such senseless tragedies,” said Canada’s Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Chuck Strahl. Since 2006, the Government of Canada has taken action to curb dangerous driving, by recently passing two new important pieces of legislation. It has made penalties for street racing more strict, and increased the penalties for driving under the in uence of drugs. There are many ways you can participate. One of those ways is to create your very own event. You can easily download posters, ads, post cards and safe driving tips at www.rememberroadcrashvictims. ca as well as post an online tribute to someone you loved and lost.

Not only does the handbook explain the different methods drivers can use to track their expenses, it also includes simplified record keeping forms that can be used to support the claim. One book should last a year for most drivers, so for just over $5.00, carriers can support their drivers by making sure they never miss out on a meal deduction claim again. Plus, drivers will sleep easy, enjoying the peace of mind that their expenses are being tracked properly! This book explains: 1. Who can and can’t claim the deduction for meals and lodging; 2. how much can be claimed; 3. what length of trip qualifies for a meal allowance and expenses in the US; 4. detailed explanation and examples of the record keeping methods along with frequently asked questions.

OPERATION AIR BRAKE HITS HISTORIC HIGH IN NUMBER OF VEHICLES INSPECTED Significant Drop in Out-of-Service Defects Seen for Brake Components Th e number of vehicles inspected during Operation Air Brake’s “Brake Safety Week” reached a historic high this year while also showing a signifi cant drop in the number of out-of-service defects for brake components and overall out-of-service (OOS) defects, according to results from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). Brake Safety Week is a component of the Operation Air Brake campaign, an ongoing eff ort of an international truck and bus brake safety program dedicated to improving commercial vehicle brake safety throughout North America. Brake Safety Week took place September 12-18, 2010 across North America. “While enforcement is a major focus of Operation Air Brake, education also is critically important,” said CVSA’s Executive Director Stephen A. Keppler. “CVSA recently completed a survey of 7,500 drivers during Brake Safety Week that showed us education remains a big issue. We use the information gathered from Operation Air Brake to really try to understand problem areas and assist industry in increasing their compliance to improve highway safety for them and the motoring public.” Overall results show: • 30,472 vehicles inspected. Th e highest number of vehicles inspected since program started in 1998. Th ere were 26,630 inspections in 2009. • 2,717 vehicles were placed OOS for brake adjustments (8.9% in 2010, 9.0% in 2009). • 2,435 vehicles were placed OOS for brake components
(8.0% in 2010, 9.2% in 2009). 4,117 vehicles were placed OOS for brakes (13.5% in 2010, 15.1% in 2009). Th e Operation Air Brake campaign exists, in part, to reduce the out-of-service rate for brake-related defects. Th is Selective Traffi c Enforcement Program (STEP) model has been used successfully in other areas of traffi c safety, and is being employed throughout North America to focus on the very important issue of brake safety and regulatory compliance. Th e Operation Air Brake Campaign was developed and initiated by Canada in 1998. Historically, OOS rates have been lower in Canada and this continues in 2010. During Brake Safety Week 2010, 13.7% vehicles in the U.S. were placed OOS for brake adjustments compared to 10.3% in Canada. Canada also reported a signifi cant drop in the OOS rates for brakes in 2010 (4.4%) versus 2009 (6.5%). “Th e Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is to be commended for their outstanding eff orts toward improving safety on our roads and highways,” said FMCSA Administrator Anne S. Ferro. “I thank CVSA for their leadership during Brake Safety Week and for their partnership throughout the year in protecting lives.” CVSA is an international not-for-profi t organization comprised of local, state, provincial, territorial, and federal motor carrier safety offi cials and industry representatives from the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Winterize your vehicle – Cold weather’s coming (NC)—With cold weather just around the corner, unpredictable driving conditions aren’t far behind. This year, don’t be caught unprepared for winter driving. The effect of winter on your vehicle is easily preventable with a few quick checks. “Driving in cold weather conditions can be stressful, but you can make it more bearable by staying a few steps ahead and being proactive with maintenance.” says Henry Blumenthal, Chief Underwriter, TD Insurance. “Luckily, some of the most effective steps are also the simplest and in the end, will help make you a more confident driver when the snow flies.” TD Insurance offers the following tips for winterizing your vehicle: 1. Consider investing in winter tires or replace your allseasons. Worn, bald or badly aligned or balanced tires can mean accidents on ice, rain or snow. By paying just a few more dollars, you will be saving in the long term. In addition, winter tires are mandatory in some provinces, 2. Check your tire pressure. Properly inflated tires ensure good contact with the road. 3. Top up all the fluid, from the oil to antifreeze. Make sure your vehicle has what it needs. 4. Typically winter means reduced visibility. Check your wiper blades and invest in winter windshield washer fluid – it won’t freeze when you need it the most. 5. Pack an emergency kit for your trunk including items you
would need if you were stuck or stranded on the road. Items in a winter kit could include blankets, candles, non-perishable snacks, and a first-aid kit. 6. Stay alert and prepared. Ensure you have enough fuel, watch for black ice, and keep a mobile phone with you just in case you need to call for help. 7. Plan ahead. Travelling in winter conditions can take longer – be prepared to drive slower and for longer in certain weather conditions. Additional tips and information about auto insurance are available online at www.tdinsurance.com or toll-free at 1-888-7880839.

Meritor WABCO Launches SafetyDirect
Offers Fleets Greater Efficiency with Comprehensive Real-Time Safety and Data Reporting
M
eritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems has announced the availability of SafetyDirect at the 2010 American Trucking Association Management Conference and Exhibition. SafetyDirect is immediately available for order for all North American commercial vehicle fl eets seeking to simplify delivery of detailed trend data as well as instant notifi cation of vehicle safety and performance. SafetyDirect allows customers to use as a single point of access to monitor and synchronize driver performance reports on braking, stability control, following distances, collision safety system braking and lane-departure warnings for individual drivers as well as the entire fl eet. Th e comprehensive reporting includes event location, date, time, speed, odometer reading and safety trending data. “We are pleased to launch SafetyDirect to our North American customers. We fully expect the system to revolutionize the way fl eets monitor report and capture safety data,” said Jon Morrison, president and general manager, Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems. “By integrating data from our company’s SmartTrac and OnGuard active safety systems into Iteris’ SafetyDirect and lanedeparture warning systems, it’s easier for fl eet managers to collect the information they need to meet and improve safety and business goals.” SafetyDirect works by combining the technologies in Meritor WABCO’s SmartTrac and OnGuard active safety systems with their
partner Iteris’ SafetyDirect, an online application for analyzing data generated by Iteris’ data logger and lane departure warning system. Th e SafetyDirect application uses information transmitted from the vehicle by the fl eet’s onboard mobile communications system via leading telematic providers such as Qualcomm and PeopleNet. Safety systems supported by SafetyDirect include: SmartTrac – a suite of active safety systems that can assist the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle in response to an impending loss of directional or roll stability. OnGuard – a forward-looking radar-based collision safety system that can detect objects in a vehicle’s path and automatically engage the throttle, engine retarder, and service brakes when it senses an impending collision thereby assisting the driver in avoiding rear end collisions. Iteris LDW – a lane-departure warning system that uses a camera and onboard computer to track visible lane markings and detect when a vehicle drift s toward an unintended lane change.

Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.
Checklist for Employment Are you ready to embark on your career in this massive transportation industry? In a presentation last month I spoke to a group of new students heading into the industry, helping them become professional drivers. Th ere are six steps which I think if new recruits would take time to check over and ensure they possess will help to ensure you a position in this competitive industry. With CSA 2010 arriving this month, drivers will be playing an even more important position in how a company is positioned. Drivers need to become an asset to the industry as opposed to another clog in the wheel. So let’s assume you’re new to the transportation industry and are beginning to look for work as a professional driver, where do you start? Th e fi rst step and I have six outlined for you in this article is “Attitude”. As mentioned earlier, will you be an asset to our industry or a clog? How you conduct yourself while on the job and away from the job are critical to your success in the industry. Plan on coming into this industry as an ambassador, educating the public on the importance the transportation industry plays in their daily lives. If your attitude is not in check, you’re wasting your time even trying to get into this industry.
Th e next step of importance is “Training”. Are you properly trained for this industry? In the old days, as long as you can shift the gears, companies would give you a chance. Th ose days are long gone and even experienced drivers are being sent out for road tests before being accepted. You need to ensure you have the proper training and make sure it is from an accredited school. Th e third step is to ensure you are “Properly licensed”. I am not just talking about you’re A-Z or D-Z license, I’m talking about your background, most companies are requiring FAST cards for employment, but that is not the end of it, you’ll need to have a passport should an emergency happen while in the States. Your background needs to be criminal free as police checks may be required by certain companies before employment is granted. Th e next important area is “Drugs and Alcohol”. You need to be drugfree these days. Gone are the days of the all night Saturday night party and then leaving on your run on Sunday aft ernoon. Th e new safety rating under the CSA standards will be very heavy on anyone found with drugs and alcohol in their system. Most companies that I know of are very strict in their policies for drugs and alcohol. Th is next step should be one of the fi rst steps in my book as I am big on “Appearance”. If your daily dress
consists of a ball cap worn backwards, pants around you knees and a ripped t-shirt, you may fi nd it hard to land a job. Take a good look in the mirror and make sure you fi t the bill. You will be representing the company you work for, so let them feel comfortable that you will represent them in a positive way. Appearance matters so get yours in check. Th e fi nal step of importance is “Knowledge”. I am not saying you must possess all of the knowledge you require as you’re brand new What I am talking about is that you are willing to obtain that knowledge. Are you willing to listen and learn the proper way to perform as a professional driver? Th e know-it-alls don’t make it too long in this industry. Problem drivers will be noticed as there is a tight community within the transport industry. So there you have the six steps to starting your quest for employment as a professional driver. To recap, check your attitude, training, licensing, drug and alcohol usage, your appearance and your willingness to gain knowledge. If you are lacking in any of those areas, then you are best to take care of those issues before embarking down the road for a position of a professional driver. I wish you well with your journey.

First Phase of Highway 401 Service Centres Complete Full Complement of Restaurants and Other Amenities Now Open
T
he driving experience along Highway 401 has improved with the opening of seven service centres built and managed by Host Kilmer Service Centres (HKSC). These new ONroute Centres are part of the Province of Ontario’s redevelopment program of 23 service centres along Highways 401 and 400. “Redeveloping our highway service centres is part of the McGuinty government’s Open Ontario plan to invest in our infrastructure and create opportunities for Ontario families. These state-ofthe art service centres will serve motorists better and help showcase our province in a positive way,” said Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Minister of Transportation. The new dining selections, ranging from Tim Hortons, A&W and Coldstone Creamery, to KFC, BURGER KING and Taco Bell are featured throughout the network of new centres. These quick service restaurants supplement the Canadian Tire gas stations / convenience stores and washroom facilities that opened earlier this summer east of the GTA on Highway 401 at Bainsville, Morrisburg, and Trenton North, and west of the GTA on Highway 401 at Tilbury North and Tilbury South, Dutton and West Lorne. “We are proud to open these centres on time and with full services as promised,” said HostKilmer representatives Ken Tanenbaum, EVP, Kilmer Group, and HMSHost Vice President, Michael Jones. “We appreciate the patience of Ontario travellers during the construction period, and we’re confident they will agree that these clean, comfortable and state-of-the-art travel centres are places worth celebrating.” Motorists will also find The Market, a custom travel retail store that features an outstanding selection of fresh gourmet “foods to go” as well as newspapers, maps and magazines. Convenience and
travel items, including everyday essentials, add to the many offerings and amenities travellers will now find along the highway. “The partnership between Canadian Tire’s gas bars and convenience stores and Host Kilmer’s ONroute Centres delivers outstanding value, services and experiences to travellers,” said Bruce Allen, President of Canadian Tire Petroleum. “Our sites will offer topquality gas, great service and an opportunity to earn Canadian Tire ‘Money’®.” “These service centres reflect the Ontario brand creatively, are designed to accommodate current green technology, and are adaptable to the needs of travellers in the future,” said Les Klein, Principal of Quadrangle Architects. “It is important that we offer travellers a consistent, excellent experience and a design that reflects the nearby communities.” Staffed tourist information centres are located at the Tilbury South and Bainsville ONroute centres. These Highway 401 centre locations are the gateways to the province from the east and west. Larry Daer, EllisDon’s Executive in Charge of Construction said, “We are pleased to achieve this important milestone with HostKilmer on the Province service centre project. This redevelopment process encompasses a complete design-build of these centres, including having them built to target LEED Silver certification. This will significantly improve travellers’ experience across Ontario’s busiest highway.” Construction on the three subsequent phases will continue through to 2012, and openings for these phases will follow in 2011 through 2013. For construction updates and more information about the phased construction schedule, please visit: www.mto.gov. on.ca. For updates specific to the centres, the customer experience or to apply for a job, please visit www.onroute.ca.

T
he following is an excerpt of an interview with Guy Broderick, Driver Trainer with APPS Transport
Group. Guy, please tell us how you came into the trucking industry and elaborate upon your career as a driver. I actually started my career in the trucking industry - a little different than most drivers. My first job during high school was with a lumber company in Mississauga. Lansing Buildall. During my 13 years at Lansing, I was able to obtain both my DZ licence and my AZ licence through an internal training program they offered. This I must say was the best training a driver could have. I was trained on every kind of flatbed load you can think of and this training was not just for a couple of weeks. More like 6 months. When I went for my driving test at the old John Rhodes Testing Centre in Brampton, I arrived with a fully loaded truck trailer combination unit. The road examiner was quite surprised to have a fully loaded truck and trailer for a road test. He asked me to back it into their simulated loading dock area. To his surprise, I snaked it there without even touching the curb once. He said he was impressed. I must say having 6 months practice of backing up through construction sites really helped with my precision. I stayed at Lansing when I was in college and upon completion of my schooling I started working for a cross border carrier involved in the automotive industry as an Operations/ Fleet Manager for an international carrier. After working there for five years I decided to get back behind the wheel for my present employer, APPS Transport. I have been a driver trainer there for roughly 15 years. Can you tell us about the Road Knights? What are the Road Knights’ objectives and why is this organization
important to you? The Ontario Trucking Associations Road Knights Team is a group of professional drivers that are selected every two years to serve as ambassadors for the trucking industry. OTA Road Knights are committed to maintaining the highest standards of a professional truck driver. Our mission is to help make our roadways safer by encouraging all road users to be partners in safety. We do this by making presentations on safety and the importance of the transportation industry to school groups, governments
and other community groups anywhere in the province. To be selected for this team a driver must have a spotless safety record, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to provide evidence of a daily commitment to road safety. These qualities I take very seriously, and I always practice them in my daily routines. For drivers who fit these criteria, you should talk with your safety department about this program. The OTA is presently looking for drivers for the 2011/2012 term. To review the requirements please see the section on public affairs on the OTA website www.ontruck.org What words of advice do you have for newcomers to the industry? You want to make sure you pick a good driving school. This industry is growing and it needs qualified drivers now. I have been in it for 22 years, and 33
I feel it is a rewarding career. Please review the following websites for information on truck driver training schools. OTA website: www.ontruck.org ProfessionalTruckDriver Institute: www.ptdi.org Driverlink: www.driverlink.com Please describe a typical day at work. My daily run starts out from Brampton, ON, at 0330 am and I drive down to London, ON. I do anywhere from four to eight deliveries in and around London, and I could go anywhere in south western Ontario for my pick up. That area could be Windsor to Sarnia. I usually run about a 10 to 12 hour day. What are the challenges you see coming up for the industry and drivers in the coming months.? Some of the changes I see are really big. CSA2010 is set to start up in November. This really only applies to drivers running stateside, but what you do up here will affect your scores south of the border. As a professional driver you will want to keep up-to-date records on your scores and make sure your company does as well. These programs will weed out the bad carriers and leave only the better ones. In my opinion, that is a good thing. There have been too many carriers flying under the MTO/DOT radar for years. What are some of the work related or other relevant successes you have enjoyed in the last 12 months? I must say the biggest thing to happen in my driving career has been the OTA Road Knight appointment. My wife has always said I have a knack for talking about this industry, how safe it is and how important it is to Canada. She has always been my biggest supporter and having the ability to talk to people through the OTA Road Knight program was the icing on the cake for my driving career. ROAD TODAY

Canada, “My wife is a software expert but I’m into the media line which is not so well-paying abroad. So I’ve signed up for Yoga classes and for the next three months I’ll perfect my asanas, so that I can make some money when we finally move.

THE GLASS CEILING: Mandira Bedi dazzles in the contemporary diamond jewellery created by MAIA — the soon to be launched fine jewellery store in Khar
On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.
OUT OF ACTION? Actor Nagma
End of her political career? When the controversy
erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.
Personal relationships not working out:
I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to. The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft. Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

OTA Slams WSIB Rate Hikes Worst possible time to increase payroll taxes: Bradley The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), whose workers’ compensation system currently has a $14 billion unfunded liability, has announced that the 2011 premiums paid by Ontario employers will rise by an average of 2%. DATES OF BRAMPTON OPERATION: November 26 & 27 December 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18 9 p.m. – 2.30 a.m.
What is ORN?
Operation Red Nose is a unique program dedicated against drinking and driving. Essentially, it is a volunteer driving service provided during the Holiday Season to all drivers who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive their own vehicle. It is an original and free way of getting a safe ride in one’s own vehicle without driving it! Since 1984, Operation Red Nose’s mission has been to encourage responsible behaviour with regard to impaired driving in a non-judgemental manner by enabling communities to provide a free and confidential chauffeur service to their members, the financial benefits of which are redistributed to local organizations dedicated to youth.
The Service
A CONFIDENTIAL, EFFICIENT AND FREE SERVICE
How does the service work?
The Operation Red Nose service is provided by a team of three volunteers. Two of them, the volunteer driver and the navigator, ride with the client in his vehicle while the other volunteer, the escort driver, follows them behind in his own car. • Volunteer driver This volunteer drives the client’s vehicle. • Navigator This volunteer rides along with the volunteer driver and the client in the client’s vehicle. He or she usually sits in the back, along with the client, and makes sure that everything is going according to the client’s expectations. This person is also responsible for preparing a receipt and handing the client an Operation Red Nose client envelope. • Escort driver This volunteer uses his vehicle in order to drive the volunteer driver and the navigator to the location where the next client is waiting. The escort driver follows the client’s vehicle. Once the client reaches destination, the volunteer driver and the navigator join the escort driver in his vehicle. At this point the team either goes back to the headquarters, or simply calls the dispatch center to know where to pick up a new client.
Features of the service
• The Operation Red Nose service is not intended just for people who have been drinking alcohol. Any person who does not feel fit to drive, due to fatigue or other reasons, can call Operation Red Nose. • A person may call once, or more than once, during the course of an evening, either to go from one place to another, or simply to go home. • The service is free. Donations are accepted and are turned in full to local youth or amateur sports organizations. • The only requirement: the client must own or operate a vehicle at the time of his call. In other words: no vehicle, no service. Operation Red Nose is not a taxi service, but rather a volunteer driver service for motorists and their vehicles. The client is driven in his own vehicle and never in the vehicle of the Operation Red Nose volunteers. Other passengers may also ride in the client’s vehicle (just as long as there are enough seat belts) and will be dropped off before the owner's car is taken to the requested destination. • The service is confidential. The volunteers commit to be discreet by signing a form in which they agree not to give any details that could help identify a client.
Volunteers Needed!
Want to get involved with Operation Red Nose Brampton? There’s always room! The program needs people drivers, navigators, escort drivers, dispatchers, hosts, and mascots. If you are interested in participating in this exciting campaign, please contact Heather LeBlanc at 905-451-3113, ext. 3224 or at heather.leblanc@on.sja.ca.

Big deal A guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: ‘Free to good home. OSTEOPOROSIS: THE SILENT THIEF Have you ever wondered why some elderly people have a “hunch” or “hump” back? This is usually caused by multiple compression fractures in their spine. With these types of fractures, the vertebrae in your spine become a wedge shape and the end result is an increased curve in the thoracic spine. Osteoporosis is a disease that decreases the density of bone, which makes the bone more brittle and susceptible to fractures. Osteoporosis is a common condition that affects millions of people around the world. The word osteoporosis literally means ‘porous bones.’ Bones are composed of collagen, calcium and minerals. It has a hard smooth outer shell with a less dense inner core which resembles an intricate labyrinth of honeycombs. In a person with osteoporosis, there is structural deterioration of bone tissue in the inner core of the bone. This results in a decrease in bone mass, which affects the integrity of the bone. There is also a decrease in bone density which causes the bones to become brittle which make them more susceptible to fractures. There are many risk factors that predispose a person to osteoporosis. Risk factors include, any type of fracture that results from minimal trauma after the age of 40, a family history of osteoporosis, long term use of glucocorticoid therapy such as prednisone, and the presence of celiac or Crohn’s disease. Common lifestyle
risk factors include a low calcium intake, smoking and an excess intake of caffeine or alcohol. Since bone loss can occur without any symptoms, many Canadians have osteoporosis and are not aware of it. Since there is a gradual loss of bone, without any symptoms, osteoporosis has been known as the “silent thief.” If you have many of the major or minor risk factors consult your health professional. The most accurate method to measure bone density is by doing a Bone Mineral Density test. The most common bone density test in use today is called a dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Anyone over the age of 65 should have a BMD test done.
There are 1.4 million Canadians who suffer from osteoporosis. One in 4 women and 1 in 8 men over the age of 50 has osteoporosis. Although, the disease is more common in older individuals it can occur at any age. Osteoporosis has also been a condition that has traditionally been associated with women. Although 80% of those who are diagnosed with osteoporosis are female, there is a small percentage (20%) of males who will also get the disease.

Fractures are the most significant complication associated with osteoporosis. The most common areas for fractures are in the spine, wrist and hip. Although most fractures will not have any major complications other than pain, fractures of the hip can lead to permanent disability and mortality. What can you do to prevent osteoporosis? Your genes will determine the potential and strength of your bones. However, there are some lifestyle factors that you can incorporate into your daily routine that will save or increase your bone density. By the age of 20, the average person has acquired 98% of his/ her skeletal mass. Building strong bones early on in life can be the best defense against developing osteoporosis. How do we do this? The best method is by performing weight bearing exercises such as running and weight training, having healthy lifestyle and eating a balanced diet which is rich in calcium and vitamin D. Osteoporosis is a disease that is common and affects millions of Canadians annually. It affects women more then men, but does affect both sexes. How does this affect you? You may not be at risk, but someone you know may be. Let them know what they can do to build strong bones, and educate them about the disease. Remember, if you are over 65 you should have a bone density test. Until next month drive safely and take care.
