elcome to the April 2012 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing face of the trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. The truck show season has begun. After an eventful Mid America Trucking Show in Louisville, everybody is now looking forward to Truck World 2012 – Canada’s National Truck Show held right here in the trucking hub at the International Centre in Mississauga from April 19th to 21st. We invite all readers to visit and meet the team from Road Today Media Group at Booth 5526 in Hall 5. For a free admission, preregister by using our VIP Code ROADTODAY till April 18th, as the admittance is $20 at the door. Motor vehicle collisions remain a leading cause of injury-related deaths in Ontario. The social cost of motor vehicle collisions in Ontario is estimated at about $18 billion annually. During a collision, properly fastened seatbelts help to distribute the forces of rapid deceleration over larger and stronger parts of the person’s body, such as the chest, hips and shoulders. In Ontario, every occupant traveling in a motor vehicle is required to be buckled up properly. Drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers under the age of 16 are properly secured in a seatbelt, child car seat or booster

seat, as required by their height, weight and age. Only one person can use a seatbelt at one time. There must be a seatbelt or child car seat for each person in the vehicle. It is illegal for two people to be buckled up using the same seatbelt. Please buckle up and help the province achieve 100% seat belt usage in order to safeguard and protect countless precious lives. Continuing with our focus on promoting road safety awareness, we are pleased to announce the launch of ‘Road Today Show’ - a weekly program on Rogers Television Cable 10 focused on creating awareness on various elements of road safety amongst road users (drivers, passengers, pedestrians) of all age groups. The program will provide timely information about new rules, regulations, traffic campaigns and much more through interaction with road safety professionals, policy makers and law enforcement staff. The overall objective of the show will be to provide education and awareness in order to reduce the human and financial cost of motor vehicle collisions by nurturing a positive behavior change. Stay tuned for more details as we approach the launch date of May 8th. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Road Today Radio’ our weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am for latest trucking and transportation news, laws and regulations. Enjoy the pleasant weather but please drive safe and responsibly. Manan Gupta Editor

New Detroit Transmission Completes Detroit Integrated Powertrain D

Detroit automated transmission enhances vehicle performance, efficiency

aimler Trucks North America has introduced the Detroit Transmission– the next component in the complete Detroit powertrain. Detroit is now the only OEM that can offer a complete powertrain package, which also includes Detroit axles and Detroit’s industry-leading heavy-duty engines. Detroit’s integrated powertrain is part of Daimler Trucks’ Global Excellence Strategy to have uniform production standards and processes worldwide, resulting in the most efficient, highest quality and lowest cost of ownership products in the industry. The development of Detroit’s powertrain products has been an international effort, with resources being drawn from all of Daimler’s global capabilities. Daimler’s transmission technology has been extensively tested and proven in series production in select European markets since 2005. The 12-speed, direct- or over-drive automated transmission combines a traditional clutch-actuated manual gearbox with highspeed, computer-controlled shift and clutch actuators, which automatically and seamlessly selects the right shift pattern for fuel economy and engine power. The direct drive transmission will be the best technical solution to maximize fuel efficiency for line-haul/long haul operations. It combines improved slow speed maneuvering capabilities with high road speed efficiency. Features such as active driveline protection, which anticipates torque windup; and torque limiting, also enhance reliability and driver comfort. The Detroit transmission employs advanced fuel efficiency technologies including skip shifting, enabling drivers to run through lower gears faster to achieve cruising speed sooner; and EcoRoll, which helps the vehicle coast more efficiently. The transmission’s lightweight aluminum design results in up to a 300 lbs

weight savings (vs. cast iron designs), benefitting fuel economy or increasing bulk payload. Additional features of the Detroit transmission include:

- Hill-Start Aid option to prevent roll-back after standing still on a hill; - Enhanced cruise control and improved dash display; - Shift lever with gear, auto/manual mode and brake selec tion, improving ergonomics; - Driver selectable shift modes for performance or economy. “We have developed a sophisticated tool that improves driver and powertrain communication,” said Hames. “We are committed to providing the best products that help our customers get the job done.” For more information, go to www.DemandDetroit.com.

TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index Records Second Best February in 11 Years

T

ransCore’s Canadian freight index recorded its second best February spot market freight volume in 11 years, surpassed only by last year’s peak in February loads. Month-over-month the index increased by one percent. Intra-Canada loads accounted for 28 percent of the month’s volume. Top regions for loads within Canada were: - Western 42 percent - Ontario 36 percent - Quebec 18 percent - Atlantic 4 percent Equipment postings in February also increased by only one percent from the previous month while year-over-year capacity was up 16 percent from February 2011. The equipment-to-loads ratio remained unchanged from the level established in January. TransCore’s Loadlink freight matching database constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries and has been available to Canadian subscribers since its inception in 1990. Over 13 million full loads, LTL (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually. As a result of this high volume, TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight movement and provides a historical account of the domestic and cross border spot market freight movement.

BENDIX TO LAUNCH SMARTIRE TPMS FOR TRAILERS

Bendix Kit Expands Tire Monitoring Capability for Maximized Vehicle Fuel Economy and Safety Benefits

F

leets and drivers will soon be able to deploy the fuel-economy and safety benefits of the SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) by Bendix CVS on their trailers. Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems expects to release SmarTire TPMS for trailers in the third quarter of 2012 as an aftermarket retrofit kit. A typical kit would consist of eight wheel sensors, harnessing, and a wireless receiver. The company also intends to make SmarTire TPMS available to OE trailer manufacturers. SmarTire technology continuously monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire on a commercial vehicle to provide real-time tire status information to the driver or maintenance technician. When paired with the latest version of SmarTire for tractors, the SmarTire trailer system will wirelessly link with the trailer, displaying both the truck and the trailer tire information. Through this automatic link, the system will display the data provided by sensors monitoring the trailer tires on the existing TPMS display. The SmarTire technology warns the driver of tire-related problems before they pose a safety hazard. The exclusive temperature compensation feature allows the system to provide earlier warnings of a tire problem. Particularly relevant for trailers, the high-temperature warning an invaluable feature that provides the driver with warning of a potential thermal issue, such as an overheated wheel-end due to a bearing or brake issue. To assist fleets with managing the increasing costs of both fuel and tires, SmarTire TPMS provides drivers with the necessary information to keep their vehicle tires properly inflated. Tire under inflation by as little as 10 percent results in a 1.5 percent drop in fuel economy, which can increase fuel spending by up to $1,000 per year for a single truck. Under inflation by 20 percent results in a 30 percent reduction in tire life. SmarTire’s in-vehicle dash display provides information including actual tire pressure and temperature for each wheel location, along with a deviation value that shows the amount of over- or under inflation from each tire’s cold inflation pressure www.roadtoday.com

(CIP). This deviation value provides the user a deviation from target pressure, regardless of tire temperature, an important gauge because tire pressure rises when a tire’s temperature increases from use or outside conditions. For drivers and fleets, this means they can accurately maintain their pressures anytime – whether a truck has been sitting idle or has been driving for hundreds of miles.

reightliner Trucks has announced that the Freightliner Cascadia 113-inch BBC day cab will be available with natural gas technology. Freightliner Trucks has partnered with Cummins Westport to provide the new ISX12 G heavy-duty natural gas engine as a factory-installed option. The availability of the Cascadia day cab with natural gas technology adds to Freightliner Trucks’ portfolio of natural gas offerings, which also includes the Freightliner Business Class M2 112 and the 114SD. Parent company Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) leads the medium and heavy commercial vehicle market in the production of natural gas powered conventional vehicles with a combined sales figure of more than 3,800 natural gas vehicles across its brands. Of those, Freightliner Trucks has sold more than 1,300 trucks and tractors since 2008. In addition to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, natural gas fuel costs up to 60 percent less than diesel (based on current prices) without sacrificing power or performance. Ideal for regional haul, vocational and refuse applications, the 12-liter ISX12 G natural gas engine is based on the Cummins ISX12 diesel heavy-duty engine platform. The ISX12 G will operate exclusively on either compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) and features ratings of 400 hp and 1,450 lb-ft torque, optional engine brake, and manual and automatic transmission capability. In addition, a wider range of optional CNG fuel tank offerings will be available to address the desire for increased range with these vehicles. Production will begin on the Cascadia CNG ISX12 G beginning in Q1 2013. 18

Alliance Truck Parts Launches Online Parts Cross-reference Tool A

Aftermarket Diesel Particulate Filter Replacements

lliance Truck Parts, the aftermarket parts provider for the commercial transportation industry, has launched an online parts lookup tool to help customers find the right part among countless competing numbers and naming conventions. The web-based tool consolidates data from the top OEM and independent manufacturers creating a single point of access to find the right all-makes part. With a simple web interface, visitors can search for the part needed in two ways: by the Alliance Truck Parts number or by a competing supplier’s part number. With the click of a mouse, the parts lookup and cross-reference tool provides the suggested part number and information from Alliance Truck Parts, and by entering a city and state, it offers links to dealers and relevant parts specials in the area. The tool was created with dealer parts managers, fleet managers and independent customers in mind. Previously, multiple parts catalogs had to be consulted and compared to find the desired part. The new online tool solves that issue, saving valuable time, as well as being more accurate with up-to-date part number information from multiple suppliers. The cross-reference tool is currently loaded with information from more than 30 different product lines, with more being added as new products become available from Alliance Truck Parts.

WABCO Showcases OnGuardPLUS Collision-Avoidance Assistance Technology at Mid-America Trucking Show

WABCO Holdings, a global technology leader and tier-one supplier to the commercial vehicle industry featured its breakthrough OnGuardPLUS collision-avoidance assistance technology at the 2012 Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS). OnGuardPLUS - which builds on WABCO’s industry-leading OnGuard collision mitigation system (CMS) - is the industry’s first advanced emergency braking system (AEBS), thus offering significantly greater levels of vehicle safety and driver effectiveness. OnGuardPLUS uses forward-looking radar to monitor traffic ahead. It reduces risk of colliding with moving vehicles and decelerating vehicles ahead that come to a standstill. It fully applies brakes in imminent collision situations. It provides the driver with acoustic, visual and haptic warnings. It autonomously initiates emergency braking, enables maximum possible deceleration and can bring the vehicle to a complete stop. In the event of stationary vehicles ahead such as when approaching traffic congestion, the system warns the driver and autonomously applies partial braking. This advanced safety function is the industry’s only innovation of its kind in North America. WABCO recently disclosed a long-term agreement to supply more than 50,000 OnGuardPLUS systems annually to the European operations of a global manufacturer of commercial vehicles beginning in the third quarter of 2013. The company also previously disclosed a long-term OnGuardPLUS supply agreement for trucks made by Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles. OnGuardPLUS is WABCO’s newest generation of collisionavoidance assistance technology. It is built on WABCO’s breakthrough OnGuard system, which was launched in 2008. Today, market leading OnGuard is onboard vehicles built by three of the four major truck manufacturers in North America. 20

Help pave the way for safer roads Y

CAA launches Worst Roads Campaign

ou are driving along, minding your own business when all of a sudden you hit a pothole. Before you know it you are hit in the pocketbook with hefty repair costs to your vehicle. Damage caused by crumbling pavement or traffic congestion can mean repair bills ranging from $60 - $3,000. CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) has launched the 9th Worst Roads campaign. “We want to know the worst road you have driven on in Ontario. Whether the issue is congestion, potholes, road signs, traffic lights or pedestrian and cycling safety, we want to hear from you,” said Faye Lyons, Government Relations Specialist, CAA SCO. “Your votes make a difference.” “Over the years, CAA’s Worst Roads Campaign has been successful in creating awareness about the importance of our infrastructure to the Ontario economy, public safety and our quality of life,” said Rob Bradford, Executive Director, Ontario Road Builders’ Association. “When the public speaks, governments listen and the Worst Roads Campaign provides a way for the public to make its concerns known about our growing infrastructure debt.” Cast your ballots for the worst roads in Ontario at www.worstroads.ca until April 24th. Nominate as many roads as you like, but you cannot vote for the same road twice. In 2010, Toronto roads held eight spots on the Top 20 Worst

Road list. Since then, five of those roads have been or are scheduled to be repaired. Meanwhile, due to the tremendous success of the initiative here in Ontario, the Worst Roads Campaign is also being rolled out in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Could Social Media Bring the Brotherhood Back Into Trucking? T

ruckers have always formed a pretty tight-knit community. In its heyday, truckers stood a little bit apart from the rest of society, trading the suits and ties worn by the 9-5 crowd for plaid shirts, trucker hats and the open road. They used the CB radio to speak their own language. They were different and they liked it that way. It could be a lonely job, sure, but despite the long hours alone, truckers could be counted on to warn each other of accidents and traffic problems. They would advise each other of speed traps and pull over to lend a hand to a fellow trucker in need. They were a community. According to a growing number of truckers, however, times have changed: Truckers are less willing to pull over, help out or share a kind word. According to some, the environment has become downright toxic: As long-time trucker Aubrey Allen Smith wrote in his 2007 article, The Brotherhood of Trucking “I turned off my CB radio about ten years ago. The abusive, childish action that asserts itself constantly through the speaker, had finally taken its toll on me. It's nearly impossible to have a "normal" conversation like years past. Now, if a trucker breaks down on the side of the road, they can expect no assistance, and will be called fouled names and ignored by the "brotherhood." So, what happened to the good old days? Well, it’s tough to say: Some blame the transportation companies. Others blame society in general for

the decreased trust and willingness to help one another out on the road. Either way, the days of ‘doing unto others’ in this business seem to have gone the way of ‘Convoy’ and ‘Smokey and the Bandit’...into the archives of the way things used to be.

Or have they? Like every other industry in North America, social media is being used by a growing number of truckers to do their jobs better. For truckers, this means moving their loads faster, cheaper and more comfortably... But there is something bigger at play: The more drivers turn to their laptops, smart phones and tablets, the more I wonder if social media might be just the catalyst our industry needs to help put the ‘brotherhood’ back into trucking. And if you think about it, social media isn’t all that unlike the old way of doing things: It’s kind of like the CB radio...but on steroids! Truckers are now Tweeting, Facebooking, blogging and posting YouTube videos 29

on anything and everything: • They warn each other of flooding and snowstorms, post pictures of tornadoes and advise of the best spots to take shelter when bad weather hits • They give each other a headsup on speed-traps, weigh stations, accidents and heavy traffic areas • T h e y can ask for and provide advice to their fellow truckers on just about anything • T h e y post videos on everything from how to chain up properly to how to eat well while on the road • T h e y provide frank reviews of rest stops, restaurants, truck washes and more • They unite to initiate change on issues of common concern, such as driving regulations and working conditions • They voice their opposition to the things that are wrong in the industry, such as the Truckers Against Trafficking page on Facebook, which has over 4000 followers • They mobilize to help each other, such as through the Missing Truck Driver Alert Network, also on Facebook Notice a theme here? Social media is all about being able to ask, find or provide information and assistance that will help other truckers. Sounds an awful lot like the makings of a community to me! times greater retention of particles during fuel surge and engine vibration than its closest competitor. Fuel surge results from the fluctuation of fuel flow due to the increase and decrease in the engine output. Focused on reducing injector failure by removing harmful particles and by delivering fuel that meets Fuel Injection Equipment (FIE) manufacturers’ suggested ISO 12/9/6 cleanliness level, engines equipped with the FF5782 fuel filter showed no signs of injector wear after more than 190 hours of testing. An engine in identical condition, using standard fuel filters, showed significant wear after only 50 hours, ultimately leading to premature injector failure.

J

ohn was a brand new driver, he had only been driving a month and was scared to death of going to the East Coast. Until now he had been running mostly midwest without too much trouble. He had heard the stories of places like Hunts Point Market in New York and cities like the Bronx. The company he ran for however operated within 500 miles of his home terminal so he knew at some point he would be asked to go to that part of the country. He spent another few weeks running midwest and then it happened, he was asked to go east. As the load came out the window from dispatch he read it and almost fainted, Long Island was the town noted on the paperwork. Long Island, how would he get to Long Island? He had two choices to make, he could refuse the load or he could take it and make the best of it. After a moment of thinking John decided to refuse the load, and therefore was put back at the bottom of the dispatch log. It would mean another half day waiting for another load to come his way. This happens to many drivers and owner operators who have heard stories from other drivers about traveling the East Coast. The stories are so bad they scare the crap out of anyone who even listens to them. Unfortunately too many guys believe the stories and find out too late that the story wasn’t as bad as first explained. All the reasons are usually stated like traffic, crime, tight corners, expensive

tolls, and rude people. I’ll agree that many of those issues can be found in the city, but those issues can be found in any big city across North America, or the world for that matter. Show me a city that doesn’t have traffic, crime, tight corners, and expensive tolls, or rude people. You will never get away from that and even running midwest you will find those problems in Chicago, Indianapolis, and other cities.

Its how you handle them that make you a professional driver. Refusing work based on a story you heard, or because you believe it may be a bad place is a waste of time. You will only hurt yourself in the long run as you won’t be perceived as a team player, your financial picture will suffer as you spend much of your running time waiting for loads, and you will always be afraid of that area of the country. The solution to the problem is to run by your own rules and be good at

what you do. The thin line is to make sure you know why you are running this way and to be consistent. This isn’t just a way to get out of work, this is a way to keep you in work. For instance when I used to run New York City and the East Coast I made up rules that I would stick to. I wouldn’t refuse a load to the East Coast but would have provisions such as if I didn’t feel safe sleeping in that area I would pull the truck out to an area I felt safe. I would go back in the next day if I had to. This put the pressure on dispatch to think about my back haul ahead of time, and if I did pull the truck out of that area I would get paid for my miles. Many times I got my return load before even leaving for the trip. You will find dispatch is happy to have anyone go to the East Coast. Study the area for yourself, know your equipment and what it can do. My other rule is the 40 mile an hour rule. I use this one for bad weather, but if I can’t do at least 40 miles an hour then I am best to find a truck stop to stop in and wait for the weather or road conditions to clear up. If this puts you late to a customer you need to back yourself up by being able to explain why you were late. The secret to running by your own rules is communication and a willingness to get the job done. Many times you can make better money running the East Coast so refusing work in this area is foolish. Since most companies run in this areas there is lots of work there, if you want miles then that is the area for you.

Driver-Vehicle Licence Fees on the way up in Ontario T

he Government of Ontario has announced that for the first time in 15 years it is moving to implement “modest and gradual increases” to provincial driver and vehicle licence fees to meet its commitment to eliminating the deficit and to “ensure provincial roads and bridges remain safe and in good repair for future generations.” The changes start to take effect in September. Information provided by the Ministry of Transportation shows that minimum heavy commercial vehicle validation fees (for vehicles with a GVW of 3,001 to 3,500 kg) which have not changed since 1988 will increase from $109 today to $142 on September 1, 2012 to $185 in 2013 for vehicle, for a total increase of 70% over two years. The maximum fees (for weight class 63,001 kg to 63,500 kg) will rise from $2,722 to $3,539 on December 1, 2012 to $4,601 in 2013 – also an increase of 70% over two years. The Class A driver’s knowledge test (which was last increased in 1994) will jump from $10 today to $15 in 2013 and the classified practical test will go from $75 to $85 in 2013. Oversize/over-weight permit fees will also be increasing. A single trip (dimension only) permit will increase from $50 to $65 in 2013 and a super load permit (greater than 120,000 kg) will increase from $500 to $700 (a 40% increase) over the same time

period. Commercial 10-day trip permits, which were last changed in 1993 will be increased gradually starting in 2013 from $15 to $23 in 2015 for unladen commercial vehicles (the minimum). The maximum fees for combinations of commercial motor vehicles and trailers will increase from $132 to $201 over the same period. David Bradley, president of the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) says, “while it may have been inevitable that we would see higher commercial licence fees given the provincial government’s current fiscal challenges, it’s still a bitter pill to swallow; no one likes tax/fee increases.” He says the blow might have been softened if some of the more significant increases (e.g., commercial vehicle validation fees) were spread out over a somewhat longer time horizon instead of having to be absorbed in their entirety in 2012 and 2013. “At least carriers have some time to adjust their rates to include these fee increases,” he said. “We hope the extra money raised actually goes into the road/ highway network and the bridges since revenues received by governments are not dedicated to any specific person and instead are deposited in general reserves,” he said.

LEAVE A LANE. IT 'S THE LAW.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

Few Surprises in Ontario Budget OTA remains concerned aggressive scheduling to licence fees maintained

T

he announced spending cuts to the province’s transportation infrastructure didn’t come as a surprise to the Ontario Trucking Association, which has been warning motor carriers for months to expect certain budget constraints to highway spending. In fact, despite reports Premier Dalton McGuinty would take an axe to the budget, total spending will continue to rise 1.4 per cent in the next two years. However, although the province announced it would increase its total transportation budget from $2.3 billion this year to $2.6 billion in 2012-13, infrastructure spending will fall from $308

million to $278 million next year. The cuts to highway spending appear to affect construction projects that have not yet begun, such as delaying some highway expansion and HOV projects. Projects already in the works, such as the Windsor Essex Parkway leading to the Windsor, Ont.Detroit border and a Hwy. 407 eastbound extension, will continue as planned. The OTA remains concerned, however, that the previously announced schedule to increase commercial vehicle licence fees by 70 percent in one year was maintained in the budget.

Federal Budget 2012 Focuses on Sound Public Finances and Long-Term Economic Growth C

anada’s finance minister, Jim Flaherty, introduced his seventh budget in Ottawa and while some may have been expecting an austerity budget; the government did propose rather modest spending cuts including civil service staff cuts and expects to achieve balanced budget in three years, it also included some new spending and says that the government remains “focused on an agenda that will deliver highquality jobs, economic growth and sound public finances.” There is little specific to the transportation or trucking industry in the budget beyond a rehash of the initiatives already underway through the perimeter security agreement. However, there are some measures which will be of interest to business owners such as a focus on new trade agreements with emerging economies, resources development and changes to the Employment Insurance system such as limiting EI premium rate increases to 5 cents each year until the EI Operating Account is balanced and extending

the Hiring Credit for Small Business for one year to help small businesses to defray the costs of hiring new workers. The budget also proposes to realign the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) to better meet labour market demands. However, as it relates to the TFWP, businesses will still have to first look to the domestic labour force before accessing the TFWP.

Dandruff

his month I am going to discuss dandruff which is a very common condition in North America. Dandruff is simply an irritation of the scalp which leads to itching and flaking of the skin of the scalp. In this article, I am going talk about the causes of dandruff as well as its symptoms and treatment options. Let’s get started. The most common cause of dandruff is dry skin. This tends to occur during the winter months due to the cold outdoor air temperature and warm dry indoor environments. The flakes produced by this type of dandruff are usually smaller and less oily than those produced by other causes of dandruff. Dandruff that is caused by dry skin is usually accompanied by dry skin on other parts of the body such as legs and arms. Another cause of dandruff is a skin disorder called psoriasis. This disorder is characterized by dead skin cells that form thick silver colored scales. Psoriasis most commonly affects the elbows and knees but may also occur in the scalp. A rarer cause of dandruff is called malassezia which is a yeast-like fungus. This type of infection can cause scalp irritation leading to severe dandruff. The signs and symptoms of

dandruff are fairly easy to recognize. An itching, scaling scalp and white, oily flakes in your hair and on your shoulders are the classic presentation of a person suffering from dandruff. Babies can also suffer from dandruff, a condition called cradle cap.

It most frequently occurs in newborns but can occur anytime during infancy. Cradle cap usually clears up on its own within the first year of life. Some people are more at risk of developing dandruff than others. Older men seem to be most at risk. Scientists think that this is due to certain male hormones. Also, people with poor diets or those who are deficient in certain vitamins may also be at greater risk. Finally, patients suffering from high levels of stress and certain illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease seem to be at greater risk for reasons that are unknown. Although most cases of dandruff do not require any medical treatment it is important to consult your physician if it doesn’t clear up within several weeks of trying over the

counter shampoos. The treatment of dandruff always begins with daily cleansing with a gentle shampoo in order to reduce oiliness and skin cell build up on the scalp. If this fails, your doctor may recommend an over the counter dandruff shampoo. The majority of cases respond very well to these dandruff specific shampoo however, several different shampoos may be required before the most effective one is discovered. If over the counter shampoos fail to resolve the dandruff your doctor or dermatologist may recommend prescription strength shampoo or steroid lotions. There are also a few home remedies that may be effective at controlling mild dandruff. First of all, shampooing regularly will help control the oiliness of the scalp. Limiting the use of styling products such as gels and hair sprays will also reduce the build up of oils. Lastly, tea tree oil, which is from the Australian tea tree, has also been shown effective in controlling dandruff. As you can see, dandruff is rarely a serious medical condition. However, severe dandruff can cause significant discomfort and embarrassment. By following some of these simple home remedies, you will be well on your way to a dandruff free scalp. Until next month, drive safely.
