The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. After a successful Mid America Trucking Show in Louisville, everybody is now looking forward to Truck World 2010 – Canada’s National Truck Show held right here in the trucking hub at the International Centre in Mississauga from April 15th to 17th. We invite all readers to visit and meet the team from Road Today Media Group at Booth 5015 in Hall 5. Motor vehicle collisions remain a leading cause of injury-related deaths in Ontario. The social cost of motor vehicle collisions in Ontario is estimated at about $18 billion annually. During a collision, properly fastened seatbelts help to distribute the forces of rapid deceleration over larger and stronger parts of the person’s body, such as the chest, hips and shoulders. In Ontario, every occupant travelling in

a motor vehicle is required to be buckled up properly. Drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers under the age of 16 are properly secured in a seatbelt, child car seat or booster seat, as required by their height, weight and age. Only one person can use a seatbelt at one time. There must be a seatbelt or child car seat for each person in the vehicle. It is illegal for two people to be buckled up using the same seatbelt. The Spring Seatbelt Campaign runs from April 14 through April 24, 2010 and is an excellent opportunity to focus on increasing seatbelt use in your community. We strongly encourage all our readers to use the seatbelt as it is the single most effective way to reduce vehicle related injuries and fatalities. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Good Morning Today’ our weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am for latest trucking and transportations news, laws and regulations. Navistar introduces Next Generation class 8 truck, international Prostar+ Top-Selling Class 8 On-Highway Truck Raises the Bar with Enhanced Aerodynamics, Driver Comfort Features and MaxxForce Advanced EGR Engines
N
avistar introduced the all-new International ProStar + (Plus) at the 2010 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville. As the top-selling Class 8 on-highway truck in the combined U.S. and Canada market, the International ProStar set the standard as the industry’s most aerodynamic and fuel-efficient tractor on the road. The 2010 ProStar+ raises the bar even higher. “We weren’t satisfied with simply being the best—we were determined to make the best even better,” said Jim Hebe, Navistar senior vice president, North American sales operations. “Along with improving the truck’s aerodynamics and reducing its curb weight, we’ve made a number of driver-friendly interior improvements and integrated a no-hassle emissions solution that allows drivers to do what they do best.” The Ultimate Driver’s Truck Powered exclusively by the Advanced EGR MaxxForce 11 and MaxxForce 13, the ProStar+ customers won’t have the worry or inconvenience of finding or filling liquid urea. Listening to direct feedback from drivers, the ProStar+ includes dramatically refined interior functionality. A re-engineered overhead console allows for easier reach and even includes an in-cab paper towel dispenser. Storage has been improved, with the Hi-Rise model seeing a 150 percent increase in captured storage and a 50 percent improvement in total storage. In addition, the ProStar+ cab environment has become even quieter. Already boasting one of the quietest cabs in the segment, ProStar+ cab noise levels have dropped nine percent compared to last year’s ProStar. Other driver satisfaction improvements include a 20-pound force reduction in clutch feel for better driver comfort, providing easier shifting and less fatigue. Lowest Cost of Ownership The ProStar+ offers new aerodynamic enhancements, including optional full-length chassis skirts for sleepers as well as a new cab

roof air fairing for day cab models. ProStar+ also includes many new powertrain features that improve fuel economy, including a clutched air compressor, variable speed fan, low viscosity engine oil and fuel-efficient rear axle lubricant. As vehicle weight continues to be a top priority for customers, the ProStar+ is 700 pounds lighter than its predecessor. When you include the MaxxForce 13, with its durable, lightweight compacted graphite iron (CGI) cylinder block, and MaxxForce Advanced EGR emissions technology, the ProStar+ has an additional 600-pound advantage versus the leading 15-liter engine, providing an extra 1,300 pounds of added payload capacity and fuel economy benefits.

Carrier Transicold’s Vector 6600MT Multi-Temperature Hybrid Trailer Refrigeration Unit Offers Market-Leading Capacity
F
eaturing next-generation technologies, the new Vector 6600MT hybrid trailer refrigeration unit from Carrier Transicold raises the bar on multi-temperature trailer refrigeration system capacity while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. According to a company release, the Vector 6600MT unit provides the highest refrigeration capacity of any multi-temperature unit on the market and delivers up to 20 percent greater fuel-efficiency than its predecessor. At the just concluded Mid-America Trucking Show, the new Vector unit was displayed alongside its single-temperature sibling, the Vector 6500 unit, which was introduced last year. Twins in almost every way, both Vector units take advantage of Carrier’s exclusive Deltek diesel-electric technology, which features high operating efficiencies, significantly reduced maintenance requirements versus conventional belt-drive systems, and an electric standby option for stationary units. In addition, technological enhancements to system components and operating software and a more efficient system design enable higher performance and greater efficiencies than possible with Carrier’s first-generation hybrid systems. At 100oF ambient and a set-point of 35oF, the Vector units deliver 59,000 Btu/hour of cooling capacity. For the Vector 6600MT, that’s 15 percent more capacity than the nearest multi-temperature competitor and 9 percent more than Carrier’s original multi-temperature hybrid and conventional multitemperature unit at the same conditions. At a set-point of -20oF, the capacity is as much as 15 percent greater than the conventional unit. Customers committed to green strategies, such as reducing fuel consumption and emissions, are embracing the Vector’s hybrid technology and especially taking advantage of the electric standby capability. With the refrigeration system’s all-electric architecture, Vector units deliver approximately the same performance on electric standby as they do in diesel operation.

Freightliner & Western Star to Offer Virtual Technician The Industry’s First Real-Time Remote Diagnostic System Will Become Standard on 2011 Model Year Freightliner & Western Star Trucks with Detroit Diesel Engines Equipped with BlueTec Emissions Systems
D
aimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) has announced it will soon be offering Virtual Technician (VT), the trucking industry’s first real-time remote diagnostic system, as standard equipment on 2011 Model Year Freightliner and Western Star trucks with Detroit Diesel engines equipped with BlueTec emissions systems. Virtual Technician is an exclusive and proprietary program offered by DTNA. The new VT program offers realtime vehicle system analysis through remote telemetric vehicle tracking systems. The program formulates vehicle insights based on engine diagnostic codes from sensors and components that are then packaged and analyzed. The result is a series of reports and recommended remedial actions for the vehicle operator provided by the Detroit Diesel Customer Support Center. Benefits of the new Virtual Technician system are: - reduced diagnostic and downtime - real-time communication to fleets and owners regarding the status of the vehicle - repair facility choice and scheduling - advanced notice to facilitate parts and service procedure
www.roadtoday.com
planning - elimination of unnecessary repair referrals - improved diagnostics for reduced downtime According to Dale Allemang, VT program manager and director of field service at DTNA, the emission reduction components and technologies required to meet EPA 2010 emissions mandates have made the development of Virtual Technician possible. The result is a program that will lead to reduced diagnostic time, faster identification of emerging issues, elimination of repeat service visits and an excellent service experience by the customer. Proven after more than 30 million miles of testing, including two million miles of customer freight hauling experience, Freightliner and Western Star customers are pleased with the results of the Detroit Diesel DD15 or DD13 engine with BlueTec. BlueTec, Daimler’s version of SCR emissions control technology, was adapted by Detroit Diesel Corporation to meet the specific demands of the North American heavy duty marketplace and represents the company’s latest innovation in clean diesel engine technology to be fully-developed and commercialized.

arch 20th marked the first day of spring. Along with the warm weather and sunnier and brighter days, spring also brings a new positive energy in everyone’s life. There seems to be a direct relation between warm and brighter weather and human ‘feel good’ psychology; Human beings are more productive, enthusiastic and energetic in the spring. It is also the time when business people can generate more opportunities to boost their organizations by coming out of their business offices in which they have hibernated all winter. It’s the time for business networking. Business networking is a marketing method by which business opportunities are created through networks of like-minded business people. The purpose of networking is to build relationships, to get leads from someone you know, or from someone who knows someone you know. The purpose of attending a networking event is to meet business people from various industries and to get exposure for yourself and your business. There are several prominent business networking organizations that create models of networking activity that, when followed, allow the business person to build new business relationships and generate business opportunities at the same time. Networking can help a business to improve performance, products and staff skills. It can also help to develop knowledge and skills by providing opportunities to participate in benchmarking, which can help to identify those areas where you can improve business performance. Networking can boost a business’ reputation and gather new leads. A business owner can raise their profile by becoming an established and regular networking member. Networking also helps to expand markets by generating new business contacts with potential customers, suppliers and partners. Networks can also be a key source of information and support. The extent to which one benefits depends on the events and services the network partnership offers and how actively someone becomes involved. Some businesses are reluctant to seek advice or get help for fear of being embarrassed or giving a competitor an opportunity 14
to take advantage. However, for most businesses, the benefit of taking an active role in a network usually outweighs any potential concerns or reasons not to network. In the transportation industry, there are many significant networking events. Among them, there are the truck shows and conventions, which take place each year. These are organized every spring or summer in many metropolitan cities in Canada and U.S.A. The major benefits of attending these shows are: • Incredible display of the latest trucks, equipment and technology; • A chance to see the latest and greatest in transportation industry; • Meeting business associates and friends; • Developing new contacts; • Free demonstrations and evaluations of technology products; • Gaining information, knowledge and newer trends in the industry; • Marketing your product and services. There are two prominent truck shows happening around Greater Toronto Area in the next few months: • Truck World 2010 - April 15 – 17, 2010: International Centre, Mississauga • Road Today Truck Show – May 29 – 30, 2010: Powerade Centre, Brampton So, mark these dates in your calendars, and start planning to get the most out of these spectacular spring and summer networking shows.

Arrow Celebrates 60th Anniversary As Used Truck Industry Leader
A
TRUCK SALES
A Volvo Group Company
www.roadtoday.com
rrow Truck Sales, Inc. is celebrating its 60th year as the premier retailer of used, heavy and medium duty trucks and trailers in North America. The company was founded in April, 1950 as a small used truck lot in Kansas City, MO. by business partners Jerry Nerman and the late Melvin Spitcaufsky. They started their dealership with a total investment of $8,000 between the two partners. Arrow has since grown and prospered into 19 retail stores located in the US and Canada – including the recent opening of two new retail stores in Denver and Minneapolis. They carry a diverse inventory of 2,500 units of all makes and models and offer a variety of value-add services. In the 50s and 60s, the company did well, primarily wholesaling trucks. By the early 70s, business had expanded rapidly. Current headquarters in Kansas City, MO was built in 1977. In the early 1980s, the federal government deregulated trucking lines which led to a major shakeout in the industry, providing another huge boost to the company’s wholesale business. Entry into the retail business took place in the 1980s, and the first retail store opened in Atlanta, GA in 1984. In 1990, Arrow launched its own finance company, Transport Funding. The Volvo Group purchased 50% ownership of the company in November, 1998 and completed acquisition in January 2001. Carl Heikel was named CEO and President in 2004, and continues in that role today. In February of this year, founder Jerry Nerman celebrated his 90th birthday and announced that he was retiring after 60 years. Asked why he was now retiring, Jerry quipped “to pursue other interests,” which includes dedicating more time to his vast, contemporary art collection and being more involved with the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art on the Johnson County Community College campus in Overland Park, KS. Among Jerry’s many accomplishments in the trucking industry is helping to found the Used Truck Association (UTA). “It’s truly amazing, and even a bit humbling, to realize where Arrow started as a company, and see where we are today,” commented Carl Heikel, President & CEO. “Our success and growth through the years is a direct reflection of our dedicated people, quality products, exceptional customer satisfaction and perseverance in an extremely com petitive industry.”

New Michelin X ONE XDA Energy Wide Single Tire Helps Truck Fleets Slash Fuel Costs T
for the stability normally associated with solid tread blocks. The X One XDA Energy tire is available in size 445/50R22.5 coast-to-coast, and will replace the Michelin X One XDA tire. With more than 550,000 wheel positions currently on the road, Michelin offers X One tires for various applications such as on-highway, off-highway, urban, waste hauling and recreational vehicles.
o celebrate its 10th year of X One wide single truck tires, Michelin Americas Truck Tires (MATT) has introduced its most fuel-efficient drive tire to date, the Michelin X One XDA Energy tire. Announced to the public at the Mid-America Trucking Show, the tire was part of commissioned independent tests where the Michelin tires were proven to be more than 7 percent better than top competitors’ most fuel-efficient tires. “For long-haul truck fleet managers and owner-operators still sitting on the fence about wide-single tires, now is the time to make the switch from traditional duals,” said Don Baldwin, product marketing manager, Michelin Americas Truck Tires. “The X One XDA Energy tire is the most fuel-efficient drive tire versus the leading North American competitors —hands down—and can help truck fleets save at least 7 percent in annual fuel costs when used with Michelin XZA3 steer tires and X One XTA trailer tires.” The X One XDA Energy tire is more fuel efficient thanks to innovative belt designs and Advanced Technology compounds. The MICHELIN wide single tire is made possible by the InfiniCoil Technology—more than a quarter-of-a-mile of steel cord wrapped circumferentially around the crown of every X One tire. The Infini-Coil reduces casing growth and stabilizes the contact patch, reducing irregular wear. In addition, Matrix Siping Technology helps provide exceptional traction on dry and slippery surfaces. Mack Top Exporter of Trucks from North America in 2009
M
ack Trucks, Inc. finished 2009 as the leading exporter of heavy-duty North American trucks. Mack had nearly one-third of total truck exports from the U.S., Canada and Mexico to countries outside North America, with a 30.8% market share. Mack has made strategic moves to strongly grow its presence in new and existing markets around the world, and to satisfy the desire for American-style trucks in many countries. This demand is particularly strong for construction and heavy-haul applications, and Mack is well-positioned to meet this demand via its extensive product range and access to the infrastructure of its parent company, the Volvo Group. “International sales continues to be an area of opportunity and growth for Mack as we strengthen our presence in established markets, such as Latin America and Australia, and grow elsewhere, such as Africa and the Middle East,” said Ron Huibers, Mack senior vice president, international. “Our products have a strong reputation as the epitome of rugged, tough and reliable American-style trucks.” Mack’s ability to draw upon the Volvo Group’s existing global infrastructure, with efficient logistics, strong dealers and expanded customer financing, is an important advantage in entering new markets. In addition, Mack’s products complement the offerings of other Volvo Group business areas, such as Volvo Construction Equipment – a customer already purchasing construction equipment from VCE might also operate dump trucks or equipment transporters. Ever since the Mack AC model saw service in Europe during World War I, Mack has been an internationally recognized truck manufacturer. Today MACK trucks are sold and serviced through an extensive distribution network in more than 45 countries.

C Choosing a Lane
W
ith the recent recession many people are looking at the transportation industry for a second career. Some are familiar with the industry and some are from others countries and are not sure what to expect. Just getting your license is just one piece of the puzzle. So, where do you begin? How do you pick an industry within the industry to work in? Let’s take a look. Some of your personal attributes may play a factor in your choice of companies such as age, physical condition, etc. Family obligations and lifestyle will also play a huge factor into the type of business you get into. Let’s evaluate some different types of industries within the bigger transportation industry umbrella. Many new members of the transportation business don’t realize the products hauled play a big part in the type of money that can be made. The first industry I would like to talk about that people don’t talk about very often, the moving industry. This industry has various industries within it and can be very profitable to someone not afraid of some hard work. It’s a great way to learn how to be in business. As a driver you’re in charge on the job, and a long distance driver has to buy his own help, arrange customer deliveries, etc. Typically, an owner operator gets paid by percentage that may be as much as 60% for household furniture. You will typically be tied to a local agent, but deal with the National Van Lines dispatch when on the road. You can choose between moving household goods, electronics, tradeshows, etc. The drawback
By Bruce Outridge
to the business can be heavy work, heavy to lifting, and summer will be your busiest lift times so don’t expect summer vacations. The moving industry does allow for control over your career and can be very profitable. Another area is general freight. This area is the largest and the one that most of you will fall into. Most for-hire transport companies haul all kinds of general freight. The incentive here is that most freight will be no touch freight unless you work flatbed, etc. Usually the pay is by the mile. There is a vast choice of companies here, but you may find moving your career path ahead tough unless you run more miles or change the products you haul. One way to create your own career path in this area is through becoming an owner-operator and creating a business path. Two other areas that are often overlooked are the auto-transport markets and the heavy equipment companies. Many drivers make good money hauling cars. It usually offers steadier loads and less waiting for backhauls. In addition to being paid mileage usually you are paid a loading fee. Of course, work is based upon the car makers so the economy can play a huge part of the industry. The one downfall in this area is usually it can be hard to get in on a steady basis with a company. Be prepared for a couple of years of unsteady work but it can be very profitable once involved. Also, looped into this area are the heavy haulers. Oversized loads pay very well and can offer specialized treatment for those that choose that mode of freight. Be aware that wait

times will be much longer than usual and the permits and regulations can be extreme. So investigate thoroughly. Now the industry that is usually not mentioned a lot is the gravel or dump industry. Usually you are paid by the ton, mile, or hour depending on the company. If you’re working for a paving company or smaller operation, realize you may be required to operate other machinery or do other tasks. Also note that the construction business may cause for weird schedules depending on the company. The last area is the private fleet, this area really isn’t an industry but I separated it because it is quite a change from for hire fleets. If you want the best of trucking, many times a private fleet is the answer. Many haul the same products as a for hire fleets but have an extreme focus on delivery and customer requirements, equipment can be specialized and benefits can be great for the drivers. This is certainly a goal for most professional drivers. The pay can be higher and hours more conducive to lifestyle with family, etc. Company perks can be amazing in private fleets. Whichever industry segment that you choose, investigate it, and make sure you look into the flow of the freight movement and the company. All segments have positive and negative parts to them so be careful and talk to people in those industries and get all the facts. I wish you good luck in your choices.

The following is an excerpt of an interview with Kevin Snobel, General Manager of Caravan Logistics. Q: Kevin, please give our readers a summary of your experi ence in the trucking industry A: I have been in transportation since 1976 in various roles such as a clerk in a traffic department, assistant manager for central dispatch, vice president of a steamship line and also spent time in freight forwarding and customs brokerage. I have worked in trucking for the last 19 years. Q: What advice would you give to someone new to the industry? A: 1. Absorb and learn as much as you can 2. Be prepared to do the hours, don’t be a clock watcher 3. Be prepared to pay your dues and earn accordingly 4. Continually upgrade your skills & knowledge – This is a big key to success Q: What are the best practices in the industry you have seen and developed over the years? A: I believe that success is a 3 step process: 1. All departments need to work together in harmony to achieve the organizations’ objectives. Every department in an organization is important. Running a trucking company is the same as managing an army. The general ensures that everyone works together towards achieving the same objective. Treat all your employees fairly, pay them on time, pay drivers for waiting time and make sure there is someone in the office or accessible 24/7 in case there is a problem. 2. Diversify your customer and industry base. Caravan went through a big change in the way we did business a few years ago. We fired some of our clients because as a company we had to decide – do we want 15 customers that will pay us a premium price or do we want 100 customers that will pay us the bottom price. We prefer to have a mix of customers so we can go to different customer groups to fill in when business is slow with any one group. We have

APRIL 2010
diversified to the point that we are no longer reliant on any one industry. Ensuring that our drivers are always busy and moving plays a big part in driver retention as they are earning money and not asked to stay idle. 3. Constant communications, training and feedback with employees and most importantly acknowledge contributions made by your employees. For example, when we get an idea from a driver (which might save the company several thousand dollars); we give him a gift and thank him for the suggestion in front of his peers. And here are some other insights into best practices that Kevin has implemented through the years. Keep it legal: You have to look at every facet in the organization and see how it impacts everything else. When dispatch asks a driver to run illegally, the driver will eventually fatigue and might have an accident. This will lead to insurance claims for the truck, the trailer and the freight. Then the authorities will slap the company with a violation. All of this could have been avoided by ensuring that all your drivers run legal. Sincerity: Hear and listen to people, show them that you care because they can tell if you are being insincere. Hiring: We try to hire experienced drivers as much as possible. We have hired new drivers who turned out to be some of our best drivers. What we tend to do with our newer drivers is to put them in a team with our most experienced drivers. We take the time to train them and show them what it takes to run that route or go back and forth across the border. Most importantly we let them know what our expectations are and what they have to do to be successful.

Canada, “My wife is a software expert but I’m into the media line which is not so well-paying abroad. So I’ve signed up for Yoga classes and for the next three months I’ll perfect my asanas, so that I can make some money when we finally move.”

On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to.” The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft.” Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.

TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index Trends Upwards, Consistent with U.S. Improvement T
ransCore’s Canadian Freight Index based on Loadlink freight matching data sees increase in year-over-year load volumes. Loadlink metrics for Canada indicate the daily average posting of loads has increased 56 percent in February 2010 versus February 2009. Truck postings have decreased 10 percent for the same time frame, likely indicating that excess capacity is being trimmed or that carriers are filling up with freight from contract shipments. There has been an overall improvement in truck to load ratio of 42 percent YOY. Cross border loads posted have gone up by 63 percent in February 2010 over the same time last year, another possible sign of market improvement. These numbers reflect only actual load postings and do not include carrier truck searches which have also seen substantial increases. Claudia Milicevic, general manager of TransCore’s Link Logistics based in Toronto, stated, “Trucking has seen one of the most challenging periods in the last year, but we are seeing substantial increases in load posting volumes and carrier searches.” TransCore established the largest freight-matching network in North America by merging both U.S.-based DAT Services and Canadian based Link Logistics online services. Today, Loadlink
offers more than 150,000 available loads and trucks daily along with access to other services such as Quickpay factoring, credit reports, private networks, mileage software and more. Milicevic added, “To further aid in evaluating Canadian data and emerging trends across organizations, TransCore has created strategic relationships with the Transport Institute of the University of Manitoba, invested in advanced technology, and cemented existing partnerships with clients and industry stakeholders to provide additional value to our customers.” Close to 5,000 transportation companies across Canada use TransCore’s Loadlink freight and equipment matching service to post available freight and match freight with trucks to deliver loads on a daily basis. Loadlink data has become a leading indicator of spot market freight for Canadian and cross border surface transportation.

Alzheimer's Disease

lzheimer’s disease is caused by the degeneration of healthy brain tissue which eventually leads to a decrease in memory and/or cognition. Although it is not a common disease, Alzheimer’s is the number one cause of adult dementia. Approximately five percent of the population between 65-74 years of age have Alzheimer’s. The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease can vary from person to person however, most people experience slight memory loss as the first sign of the condition. Don’t worry if you occasionally forget where you put the keys to your truck, this is normal. The memory loss which is associated with Alzheimer’s disease is much more consistent and generally worsens over time. People with Alzheimer’s commonly repeat things, forget family member’s names and misplace things. As the disease progresses it will eventually lead to irreversible mental impairment. At this time, scientists do not know the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease. However, it is widely accepted that it is caused by a combination of risk factors which include your genes, lifestyle and environment. Obviously, age is a major risk factor. As you

age you are much more likely to develop the disease. Lifestyle factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and poorly controlled diabetes have also been shown to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. This is very important for professional truck drivers as many of them have one or all on the above mentioned lifestyle risk factors. This is yet another reason to try to maintain a healthy lifestyle while on the road. If your doctor suspects Alzheimer’s disease, he or she will order specific tests to help distinguish it from other forms of dementia. Firstly your doctor will order a blood test to rule out conditions such as thyroid disorders or vitamin deficiencies. Next, they may order brain scans such as a MRI to better visualize the brain. This will allow your doctor to identify any physical abnormalities such as tumors and blood clots. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease at the present time. In most cases, doctors will prescribe medications to treat the associated symptoms such as depression, anxiety and sleeplessness. In addition, your doctor may prescribe a drug that will slow the cognitive deterioration. The good news is that recent studies have shown that maintaining a healthy weight and eating healthy may reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s. A diet which includes lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grain breads is recommended. Physical activity and exercise have also been linked with a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. Don’t forget to exercise your brain as well! Doing cross word puzzles and reading books and articles like this one, are a great way to keep your mind fit. Well, I hope you found this article both interesting and informative. Until next month, drive safely.
