elcome to the August 2011 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. This summer, OPP officers will be targeting the “big four” causal factors for collisions on Ontario roads: aggressive driving, lack of driver and passenger restraints, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and distracted driving. When these irresponsible driving practices inevitably cause collisions, ambulance and fire personnel will be working alongside police officers to save lives. All drivers should slow down, proceed with caution and move over if it can be done safely. In Ontario, Section 159 (2)(3) of the Highway Traffic Act requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law requires the driver to move over and leave one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle if it can be done safely. Failure to do so can result in fines from $400 to $2,000 and three demerit points for a first offence. In 2011, Natural Resources Canada estimates that under-inflated tires will waste 533 million litres of fuel at a cost of $722 million in

unnecessary fuel bills. This wasted full, which is enough to power 275,000 vehicles for a full year, will also release an additional 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. According to the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC), which represents tire makers, the average Canadian motorist who drives 20,000 kilometers per year can save more than $100 dollars at the pumps if their tires are properly inflated. For drivers who spend considerably more time behind the wheel, the annual fuel savings can add up to hundreds of dollars. Despite these obvious benefits, too many Canadian drivers ignore tire inflation. We encourage our readers to follow simple tire inflation tips given on Page 13 to get the best performance and fuel efficiency from their tires. The new photo identification card now available at 21 ServiceOntario locations across the province will make it easier for people aged 16 years and over who do not have a driver’s licence to open a bank account, make travel arrangements or perform other activities that require official ID. We welcome this initiative. If you want to reach the Road Today team through social media, we are readily available on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. And don’t forget to tune in to our award winning weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial or listen online at www. goodmorningtoday.ca Drive safe. Facebook Feedback Leads to Two New Super Singles from Continental F

• Enthusiastic response to both designs at events and Facebook showdown led to decision • Continental plans to have first wide single drive tire for sale in fall 2011

ollowing an enthusiastic response from the Mid-America Trucking Show, ExpoCam and Facebook, Continental Tire the Americas, LLC’s (“Continental”) Commercial Vehicle Tire Division has listened to the comments and feedback of customers and decided to launch not just one, but two new super single truck tires. In March this year, Continental invited truck tire customers to visit its booth at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky. and leave feedback about two competing designs for a wide single drive tire product on its Facebook page. The company repeated the offer at Canada’s national truck show, ExpoCam, in early April in Montréal. After speaking with hundreds of show visitors and reading the comments left for the research and development team on Facebook, director of marketing Clif Armstrong said that Continental will bring both designs to market. Continental’s original decision, Armstrong said, was to launch a wide single drive tire for long haul, highway use which would replace dual fitments and provide superior fuel economy, exceptional traction and weight reduction. The product labeled “Design 223” on Continental’s Facebook photos will be produced for this application as the new Continental HDL2 Eco Plus super single drive tire. It is currently scheduled for November 2011 availability. Continental’s director of research and development for truck tires in the Americas, Roger Stansbie, said that the new HDL2 Eco Plus (Heavy Drive Long Haul) in size 445/50R22.5 will feature 27/32nds of tread depth, a closed shoulder and regenerating sipes in the middle of the tread blocks. A three-dimensional sipe in the center of each tread block couples the groove under compression for increased strength, but still allows more block flexibility as the block exits the footprint. The new HDL2 Eco Plus’ groove geometry was designed to reduce the stress at the groove bottom by placing the element between the two groove bottom radii. This separates the forces at each side of the groove bottom and reduces premature wear, Stansbie said. The tire already meets the U.S. EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership limits for low rolling resistance drive tires, although it has not been submitted for approval yet, he said. The second product produced will be an additional size for the successful HDL2 DL (Heavy Drive Long Haul, Deep Lug) truck tire,

ROAD TODAY AUGUST 2011

also in 445/50R22.5 size. On the Continental Facebook photos it was labeled as “Design 224.” At 27/32nds of tread depth, the HDL2 DL super single tire’s tread design was copied from the existing sizes of the HDL2 DL and provides deep tread depth with the excellent traction of an open shoulder, Stansbie said. This tire also features a bottom groove treatment that reduces stone retention and outside groove geometry designed to distribute stress evenly throughout the groove bottom, providing excellent durability. The HDL2 DL wide base also will meet the U.S. EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership limits for low rolling resistance tires in the drive position, he said. Availability is scheduled for mid-2012. Both the new drive tires will be initially produced and shipped from the Continental truck tire plant in Puchov, Slovakia, but Armstrong said that molds and presses are already being relocated to the recently expanded Continental truck tire plant in Mt. Vernon, Ill. for American production.

Fuller models they can replace same day,” notes Fouch. “It’s a winwin for the dealer and fleet: Dealers don’t waste time searching and waiting for units, and fleets benefit from immediate service that gets them back to making money – instead of spending it – sooner.” Should a dealer not have a standard Reman or FLEX Reman unit in stock, same- and next-day delivery is made possible through the Roadranger Logistic Network, which includes 14 strategically located warehouses throughout the United States. In addition to the increase in standard warranty in the United States and Canada, Eaton is now offering Extended Protection Plans for additional coverage beyond the increased standard warranties of two years for linehaul applications and 18 months for vocational applications. For customers purchasing a standard Reman transmission as part of a glider kit installation, they receive an additional year of warranty coverage at no additional cost on the transmission for linehaul applications if they also purchase an Eaton Advantage Series clutch and use Roadranger approved lubricant.

aton Corporation recently announced it has increased the availability and coverage of its Reman transmissions through the addition of a new FLEX Reman line, ensuring fleets receive genuine Eaton quality and content. In addition, Eaton raised the standard warranty coverage of its entire heavy-duty Reman transmission portfolio to two years for linehaul and 18 months for vocational applications within the United States and Canada. “Eaton’s new FLEX Reman transmission is the perfect evolution of our remanufactured portfolio,” says Bill Fouch, aftermarket marketing manager for Eaton’s Truck business in North America. Both Eaton’s standard and FLEX Reman models are made using 100 percent genuine Eaton technology and are performance tested to Eaton standards. However, the FLEX Reman transmissions differ from Eaton’s standard Reman transmissions in three key ways: • No clutch housing (shipped with new gasket); • Standard shift bar housing (forward shift bar housing available); and • Cover a range of torque. Enhanced Reman Transmission Warranty & FLEX Line “Because dealers will have the ability to stock several key FLEX Reman models that cover a range of torque and are not specific in clutch housing, they automatically increase the number of Eaton

Kenworth First in Industry To Offer Factory Installation

enworth Truck Company has announced that its allwheel drive Kenworth T270 Class 6 and T370 Class 7 models now can be factory-ordered with a Fabco® power take-off option (PTO) on the twospeed transfer case. “Kenworth is the first in the industry to offer a factory-installed PTO output drive on the transfer case on a medium duty chassis,” said Judy McTigue, Kenworth’s director of marketing planning and research. “This is a great option for our vocational customers who want to run their body-mounted equipment with a PTO. It’s a cost and time saver too. Those operating other brand trucks must purchase an aftermarket retro kit, which can be costly and time consuming.” The new transfer case PTO option for all-wheel drive T270s and T370s especially serves customers in oil field, fire and rescue,

hydro-excavation, vacuum truck, well drilling and high-rate fluid transfer applications. The PTO output drive, which is located on the upper rear of the transfer case, comes with shift control interlocks to help safeguard PTO operation. When specified with an Allison transmission, a special split shift PTO programming package is included to help ensure maximum system protection and effectiveness when shifting in and out of PTO mode. The new PTO, which produces up to 2,200 ft-lbs of torque using 250 hp, runs up to 3,500 rpm. It is available for the all-wheel drive Kenworth T270 and T370 with a PACCAR PX-6 or PACCAR PX-8 engine and a front drive axle rated from 10,000 lbs. to 16,000 lbs.t Kenworth’s quality medium duty products, combined with excellent dealer support, contributed to Kenworth receiving the 2010 J.D. Smart Drivers Roll With Fuel Efficiency

Under-Inflated Tires Will Waste 533 Million Litres of Fuel in 2011 Tire Inflation Tips W

ith the summer driving season in full swing and thousands of motorists hitting the highway, drivers are reminded they can save at the pumps by ensuring their tires are properly inflated. Every year Canadian drivers waste millions of litres of fuel simply because their tires are not inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation. In 2011, Natural Resources Canada estimates that under-inflated tires will waste 533 million litres of fuel at a cost of $722 million in unnecessary fuel bills. This wasted full, which is enough to power 275,000 vehicles for a full year, will also release an additional 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Why does an under-inflated tire burn more fuel? A tire that is under-inflated does not roll as smoothly or as easily as it was intended. The result is increased rolling resistance, which causes the vehicle to consume more fuel than necessary. According to a recent study commissioned by the RAC, one third of Canada’s 21 million vehicles have at least one under-inflated tire, and only 30 per cent of drivers measure their tire pressures monthly. The study also revealed major knowledge gaps about tire inflation. For example, only 52 per cent of drivers knew how to locate the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure (owner’s manual or vehicle placard) and 26 per cent wrongly believed that the pressure stamped on the sidewall, which refers to the maximum pressure a tire can contain under maximum load, was the recommended inflation level. As well, 59 per cent of drivers interviewed made the serious mistake of relying on a visual inspection to tell them if their tire pressures should be measured. In fact, a tire can be under-or over inflated by 20 percent or more and look normal.

www.roadtoday.com

Here are some tire inflation tips for motorists who want the best performance and fuel efficiency from their tires: 1. Invest in a reliable tire gauge. The most accurate way to know if your tires need to be inflated or deflated is by measuring their pressure with a reliable gauge monthly. Too many drivers make the mistake of thinking a visual check will tell them if their tire pressures are correct. A tire can be under or over inflated by 20 percent or more and not be noticeable. 2. Always inflate your tires to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation. The right tire pressure by wheel position is listed on the vehicle placard, which is located on one of the vehicle’s inside door posts, or inside the glove compartment or fuel door. Never use the tire pressure stamped on the sidewall. That pressure refers to the maximum pressure a tire can contain under maximum load. If you experience difficulty locating your vehicle placard, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for its location. 3. You should only measure tire pressure when the vehicle has been stationary for at least three hours, or has not been driven more than two kilometres. Tires heat up when rolling, so if they are measured after driving more than two kilometres, the pressure reading will be inaccurate.

Bad Driving Habits on the Rise, Canadians Tell CAA T

hree out of four Canadians say drivers are exhibiting more annoying habits than they did five years ago, according to results of a national poll released today by the Canadian Automobile Association. Only two per cent of Canadians feel drivers are less irritating than they were five years ago, while about one in five (21%) say drivers exhibit the same number of bad driving habits compared to five years ago. Road rage, drivers that cut other people off, and drivers that send text messages while driving are the top 3 annoying habits identified in the survey. “It’s clear that Canadians think driving habits are getting progressively worse,” said Jeff Walker, CAA vice president, public affairs. “The good news is these are all correctible behaviors. If we concentrate more on good driving habits, and on being courteous to fellow motorists, we will all benefit.” Here is a list of the driving habits Canadians found most annoying, according to the poll: -- road rage (86%) -- cut people off (86%) -- text while driving (85%) -- follow too closely (78%) -- talk on the phone (78%) -- throw trash out the window (73%) -- do not use turn signals (73%)

-- too aggressive (72%) -- block intersections (67%) -- speed excessively (62%) -- constantly change lanes (59%) -- park too close to others (54%) The poll of 5,044 Canadians is considered accurate to within 1.38 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

resistant compounds with a cool base tread layer to preserve the casing. The tire features extra-thick sidewall protection to guard against shocks, snags, impacts or other damage, and it is available in two sizes: 11R22.5, 11R24.5. The XDY-EX2 tire improves on the last-generation XDY-EX tire, offering better off-road and mud traction from an aggressive tread design with more void area. Maximum tread and casing life is once again obtained due to Co-Ex Technology. With extra-thick sidewalls, the XDY-EX2 tire provides considerable protection from the shocks, snags and impacts typically associated with severe service. The tire is available in an 11R24.5 size.

ichelin Americas Truck Tires (MATT) is introducing two new tires for on/off road applications. The new MICHELINÂŽ X Works XDYÂŽ commercial truck tire is designed for exceptional traction and wear in on/off road applications, while the new MICHELINÂŽ XDY-EX2™ tire is Michelin’s most aggressive drive axle tire for extreme operating conditions, such as logging, oil fields and mining. “For today’s construction and on/off road fleets, it’s all about operational efficiency,â€? said Ted Becker, vice president of marketing for Michelin Americas Truck Tires. “Traction and overall tire protection are paramount to maintaining uptime. August is Driver Appreciation Citizen Online ‘Road Watch” Month at Detroit Diesel Reporting System

etroit Diesel has announced that in recognition of all of the hard-working truck drivers that keep our economy rolling, it has designated August as “Detroit Diesel Driver Appreciation Month.” During the month of August, truck drivers and owners will have the exclusive opportunity to visit the Detroit Diesel manufacturing facility for a special presentation, lunch and a behind-the-scenes plant tour. Guests will also receive official Detroit Diesel merchandise and an information packet. “Detroit Diesel drivers are truly the backbone of our business because they are actually experiencing the engines at work, every day,” said Brad Williamson, manager, engine and component marketing for Detroit Diesel. “Our Driver Appreciation Month is our way of saying thank you to all of our hard-working customers and potential customers.” Detroit Diesel’s state-of-the-art facility manufactures the DD13, DD15 and DD16 family of engines. The site has received recognition for its environmentally-friendly production processes, most recently earning the 2011 Michigan Green Leader Award from the Detroit Free Press. To schedule a visit, CDL licensed drivers must sign-up at least 48-hours in advance. To register, go to www.DetroitDiesel.com

Peel Regional Police have launched an online Road Watch reporting system that allows residents to file some reports online. The Road Watch Program is a community initiative that gives residents and visitors an opportunity to report instances of dangerous and aggressive driving to police. The online reporting system allows residents to submit a Road Watch form directly to police, via the internet. The submitted reports are reviewed, entered directly into police records and then they are assigned to officers in Traffic Services. Citizens will be able to report such unsafe driving incidents as: • Unsafe lane changes, • Drivers failing to yield to pedestrians, • Drivers and cyclists failing to stop at stop signs and red lights, and; • Drivers failing to stop for school buses. This system is not for emergency situations, if citizens are in an emergency situation they should utilize 9-1-1. The online reporting system will complement residents’ current ability to attend Divisions and Community Stations to file a police report. The online system will allow residents to file these specific reports in a convenient and expedient manner. Citizens who wish to file an on line report can visit the Peel Regional Police website at www.peelpolice.on.ca and select the Online Reporting tab under “How Can We Help You?”

NAIC DEVELOPS LEADERS, STRENGTHENS ENFORCEMENT, INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP

C

ommercial vehicle inspectors representing nearly every jurisdiction in North America each year train and prepare for what in the commercial motor vehicle (CMV) enforcement industry is the equivalent of the Super Bowl – a once in a lifetime opportunity to win a coveted trophy and be named champion in the North American Inspectors Championship (NAIC). This year, candidates from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will convene in Orlando, FL, August 8-13 to compete. NAIC develops future leaders, strengthens industry and enforcement partnerships and promotes camaraderie between inspectors, jurisdictions and countries. This in turn, ensures the quality, uniformity and reciprocity of the more than four-million roadside inspections conducted each year across North America. NAIC gives inspectors the chance to compete for top honors in individual event categories in pursuit of the Jimmy K. Ammons Grand Champion Award. The events sharpen their skills and provide a snapshot of the current roadside inspection environment as well as a forum to evaluate both successes and areas for improvement. Not only does NAIC recognize the best of the best CMV inspectors, it also provides member jurisdictions with a better understanding of the strengths and weakness of their CMV safety program. NAIC’s purpose is to recognize the inspector for demonstrating inspector excellence. NAIC contestants are evaluated in the following six categories: 1. North American Standard Level I Inspection; 2. North American Standard Level I Inspection Procedures; 3. North American Standard HazMat/Transportation of Dangerous Goods Inspection; 4. North American Standard Cargo Tank/Other Bulk Packagings Inspection; 5. North American Standard Level V Passenger Vehicle (Motorcoach) Inspection; and, 6. OPP Urges Motorists To Obey “Move Over” Laws To Ensure Safety Of Emergency Personnel

LEAVE A LANE. IT'S THE LAW.

DEPLACEZ -VOUS LIBEREZ UNE VOIE. C'EST LA LOI.

ntario Provincial Police (OPP) officers, other police service personnel, ambulance workers and firefighters are always out in force keeping Ontario’s roads safe and rescuing the unfortunate. But their own lives are endangered by drivers who do not obey “Move Over” legislation. “Officers report that often it is older drivers who are ignorant of this law since it was enacted in 2003 after many current motorists already had their licence. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse to endanger the life of a police officer or an emergency worker,” says OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis. OPP officers will be targeting the “big four” causal factors for collisions on Ontario roads: aggressive driving, lack of driver and passenger restraints, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and distracted driving. When these irresponsible driving practices inevitably cause collisions, ambulance and fire personnel will be working alongside police officers to save lives. All drivers should slow down, proceed with caution and move over if it can be done safely. www.roadtoday.com

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.

Presentation is everything – how do you stand up? In the world of business, presentation is everything. How you present yourself, how you act, and what you do and say all play a huge role in how you are received and valued. It may not be right, but that’s the way it is in the world and how you handle it can determine your success or failure. Most business people understand this which is why there are certain codes of conduct in a company’s culture. In the transportation world however the message seems to get lost. Partly to blame is that most drivers work independent of the office and may not be seen for long intervals, some of the blame is due to the culture of trucking from the beginning as the type of job you do when you can’t find work anywhere else or you came from a farming background. However, how the industry got its perceived value may not be totally known but one thing for sure it is beginning to change. You’re probably asking yourself why it has to change, you are comfortable the way you are doing things, nobody has said anything to you before and you have survived up to now? That may be true but it doesn’t make it right. The whole industry is changing from how companies are being rated for safety to the technology required to manage the fleets. But there are two other areas that are driving change the most; profits and recruitment! Since companies have come out of the recession there has been a wide

awakening as to how companies move forward in the industry. The companies that survived realized they have to look carefully at how they are running their business for the future. How do they increase those profit margins to keep them afloat for the future, these are the questions being asked of managers in today’s industry. The other piece of

the puzzle is recruitment and everyone is feeding from the same driver pool. With the changes in the industry picking the person that is breathing is no longer an option, drivers now have to operate in safe manner, run smarter while on the road making decisions to help the company survive. Drivers

willing to step up to the plate can enjoy a long and illustrious career in the industry. Companies are looking for help, and they’re looking to their driver pool to get it. That’s because the most areas that have variable expenses are with the driver, fuel mileage, equipment wear, etc. So how can you measure up and secure the career you want within the industry? First of all it is time to do a personal check on yourself if you haven’t done so already. First check your attitude, are you negative about your job, career, or company? Do you hate going to work every day, if so it is time for a change? The next area is to check your appearance, have you been on the road so long you now dress in gym clothes, don’t bother to shower because you don’t see anyone for days at a time? All of these affect your attitude and presentation to customers. The third area is your operation skills, are you driving safely, do you make wise choices on the road, or are you part of the problem that your company is having trying to stay alive? I hear many drivers whining and moaning about their careers, but don’t see them doing anything about it. If every company you go to ends up the same way then maybe the problem is in the mirror. Being an “A” class professional driver can keep you in the seat for as many years if you would like, being a bad one will also keep you in the seat, the problem is that seat may be the couch at home.

Transport Canada releases findings of the 2010 Pickering Lands Needs Assessment Study

T

ransport Canada has released the findings of the 2010 Pickering Lands Needs Assessment Study. The study was conducted to broaden and update previous work on the role and capacity of airports in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area in meeting future needs for passenger, cargo and recreational traffic within a 25-year horizon. The Government of Canada has noted that the study determined that an additional airport will be required in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area in the future and that the Pickering Lands would be a prime location for a new airport. The study also recommends that the Government of Canada retain and protect the site for future development of a new airport. “With more certainty regarding timing for the need for an airport, our government’s next step is to come up with a plan for the Pickering Lands, taking into account the needs of the region and stakeholders, said the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “We will develop a plan for the short- and long-term development and use of these lands, including the potential for a future airport, for the benefit and economic growth of the Greater Toronto area. The Government of Canada will prepare a federal plan for the Pickering Lands in the coming months. “The Pickering Lands represent a unique economic and environmental opportunity to help transform a key area of the GTA

through job creation, economic activity and environmental stewardship, said the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance and Minister responsible for the Greater Toronto Area. Transport Canada undertook a due diligence review prior to releasing the study, checking and verifying its assumptions, methodology and findings to ensure completeness and adequacy. The study determined that an additional airport will be required in the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area between 2027 and 2037. Future development will depend on economic factors, the development of existing airports and population growth.

PETERBILT RANKS HIGHEST IN CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AMONG HEAVY-DUTY VOCATIONAL TRUCKS IN J.D. POWER AND ASSOCIATES STUDY P

eterbilt Motors Company has announced that it has achieved the highest ranking in customer satisfaction in the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Heavy-Duty Truck Customer Satisfaction Study in the vocational truck segment. “Peterbilt’s vocational vehicles consistently exceed customer expectations in a wide variety of configurations and applications. We are extremely proud that our superior level of customer satisfaction is reflected in the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 study as customers rated Peterbilt’s vocational vehicles as the greatest in the industry,” says Bill Jackson, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President.

The foundation of Peterbilt’s vocational vehicles is the durable and lightweight all-aluminum cab with lap seam construction and bulkhead doors for toughness and corrosion resistance. Peterbilt’s Model 367 and Model 365 are available with the PACCAR MX engine, which provides customers industry-leading quality, exceptional reliability and proven performance. The MX engine combines maximum power and outstanding fuel efficiency for low cost of operation and high resale value. The Model 367 and Model 365 are also available with Peterbilt’s revolutionary SmartNav system, which provides truck-specific navigation, telematics, an integrated audio system with iPod capa-

Model 365 In the study, J.D. Power and Associates reported, “Peterbilt ranks highest and performs particularly well in the engine and cost of operation factors.” The J.D. Power and Associates study is based on interviews with more than 1,651 owner/operators and fleet managers of 1-year-old trucks. The study analyzes customer satisfaction in six key areas: engine; transmission; ride/handling/ braking/; cab/body; cost of operation; and warranty. Vocational Model 367 & Model 365 Peterbilt’s Class 8 vocational lineup includes the rugged Model 367 and Model 365, designed to withstand the rigors of daily severe service markets in construction, dump, mixer, logging and other vocational applications, where the workload and environment demand trucks to perform day in and day out. “Peterbilt’s Models 367 and 365 provide unmatched quality, durability, reliability and overall performance,” says Jackson. “Each vehicle is designed and manufactured to endure the most challenging work environments, provide lasting value and ensure our customers’ business needs are always addressed to help increase their profitability.” ROAD TODAY AUGUST 2011

Peterbilt’s vocational product line includes set-forward and set-back axle configurations to optimize maneuverability in tight working conditions, while Peterbilt’s proprietary suspensions improve ride and handling to increase driver comfort and productivity. A 90-degree hood opening enhances serviceability by providing easy access to key service points, while a multiplex electrical system reduces downtime with clearly numbered, color-coded wiring. Peterbilt’s vocational interior is durable and easy to clean, yet surrounds the driver in a comfortable, productive work environment. The interior features a dash that reduces glare and shows less scratches and scuffs. Power controls for door locks and power windows are conveniently located in the door panel. And, robust pod headlamps feature halogen reflector technology for exceptional nighttime visibility and longer bulb life. The Models 367 and 365 are available in a day cab configuration, or with a selection of detachable, Unibilt sleepers. 34

Canadian Jurisdictions Conduct Roadcheck Yearly Inspection Blitz

T

he annual North American roadside safety inspection blitz Roadcheck was conducted June 7-9 by enforcement agencies in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The event is coordinated by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) in partnership with CCMTA member jurisdictions. As part of this year’s event, some 82% of commercial vehicles inspected successfully met the CVSA’s most comprehensive and stringent on-road inspection procedures. Inspections were conducted at 132 sites across Canadian jurisdictions, with only

those vehicles not bearing a valid CVSA decal subjected to inspection. Over the three-day event, 7,834 vehicles and drivers underwent full inspection for mechanical and driver fitness. Of those, 6,373 vehicles and 7,608 drivers successfully passed. Roadside enforcement officials issued 7,003 new decals to individual trucks, trailers and passenger-carrying vehicles across Canada, signifying CVSA’s highest degree of safety and mechanical fitness. In total, 1,431 trucks, 30 passenger-carrying vehicles and 226 drivers were placed out of service for various defects and violations. An out-ofservice condition can occur for infractions as simple as a rear signal light not working to the extreme of faulty steering or brakes. Other defects may include wheels, tires, frame and load security. In many cases, drivers are able to make the necessary adjustments on site, are re-inspected and continue on their way. A total of 2.9% of drivers were placed out of service for log book, driver qualification or paperwork problems, a figure in line with last year’s improvement. (Results from this year’s initiative as well as Roadcheck 2010 and 2009 are shown in the attached tables.) This year’s average vehicle out-ofservice rate of 18.6% continues an overall downward trend in the national OOS rate over the past several years. Again this year, brake-related defects continue to account for close to half of all out-of-service violations. As such, CVSA Region V officials strongly encourage governments, industry associations and individual carriers and drivers alike to take an active Job Seekers: part in the upcoming 2011 Brake Safety Sign up this month for a chance to win a Sirius Sportster 5 Radio with Week planned for September 11-17. Thrombophlebitis

Dr Christopher H. Singh Chiropractor, runs Trans Canada Chiropractic at 230 Truck Stop in Woodstock, Ont. He can be reached at 519-421-2024 E-mail: chris_singh@sympatico.ca

T

hrombophlebitis is essentially a fancy word for a condition in which a blood clot causes swelling and inflammation in one or more of the veins in your body. Professional truck drivers are more at risk of developing thrombophlebitis due to the fact that their lifestyles on the road cause them to have many of the risk factors of this condition. In this article I am going to discuss the causes, risk factors, symptoms and treatment options of thrombophlebitis. Let’s get started. Thrombophlebitis can affect both the superficial and deep veins of the body. In most cases, this condition affects the veins in the legs. A blood clot in a deep vein, called a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is a much more serious condition as it can lead to a pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolisms, which can be life threatening, occur when a dislodged blood clot travels into the lungs and blocks a pulmonary artery. The symptoms of thrombophlebitis can vary from person to person. However, many people experience warmth, tenderness and pain in the affected area. Some people also experience redness and swelling. If a vein close to the surface of your skin is affected you may notice a red, hard and painful cord-like structure just under the surface of your skin. If a deep vein is affected, your leg may become swollen and painful especially when you stand and walk.

DVT may also damage valves in your legs which prevent blood from flowing backwards leading to varicose veins. The most serious complications of this condition are pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke, all of which can be life-threatening. The cause of thrombophlebitis is simply a blood clot. Blood clots can be caused by many different factors. One of the major causes of blood clots is long periods of inactivity such

as sitting in your truck for several hours at a time. Other risk factors that apply to truck drivers include obesity and cigarette smoke. The risk of developing a thrombophlebitis also increases if you have a family history of blood-clotting disorders or have certain types of cancers. As you may have guessed, the more risk factors that you have, the greater your chances are of developing thrombophlebitis. In order to diagnose thrombophlebitis, your physician will perform a detailed history and physical examination. Then, if needed, your physician will order special diagnostic tests such as an ultrasound, CT, MRI and/or venography. Once a diagnosis has been

reached, your physician will discuss possible treatment options. If it is just a superficial vein that is affected, the usually course of treatment includes self care steps which may include rest and heat as well as over the counter medications. In most cases, the symptoms will subside with in a week. In the case of DVT, your doctor may prescribe medications that are designed to thin the blood which are called anticoagulants. In addition, your doctor may recommend support stockings to help prevent swelling. In more severe cases, surgery is necessary to remove a clot. As with all medical conditions, prevention is the best treatment. First of all, avoid tobacco smoke. Also, try to get out of your truck as often as possible. I know that it is sometime difficult to do this due to time constraints but even if you can stop the truck and walk around for five minutes it will make a significant difference. I recommend to my patients that they try to get out of their trucks every 2-3 hours, if possible. If you can not get out of the truck, try to move your legs regularly. Carefully, try and push your feet into the floor in front of you at least 10-15 times per hour. As you can see, thrombophlebitis can be a very serious condition for truck drivers. If you experience any of these symptoms it is important that you consult your physician as soon as possible. Until next month, drive safely!
