elcome to the August 2013 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for Canada’s multicultural trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of collisions in Ontario and easily one of the most avoidable. That is why CAA South Central Ontario, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ontario Provincial Police, Toronto Police Services, Road Today and other Traffic Safety Coalition partners have launched, for the second year in a row, a fourweek long distracted driving initiative called “Missing”. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness regarding high-risk behaviours behind the wheel and encourage safe driving habits in hopes of reducing collisions and fatalities on our roads.Statistics show that drivers who text while behind the wheel are 23 times more likely to crash their vehicle and drivers who talk on their phone are 4-5 times more likely to be involved in a collision. We urge drivers to make a promise to family and friends to end distracted driving and focus on the road. The Canadian Trucking Alliance in partnership with Verisk Crime Analytics Canada - CargoNet, police agencies and the Ontario Trucking Association has announced the official launch of Project Momentum – a

commendable two phase initiative to raise awareness of the growing threat of cargo crime in the high risk corridor along Highway 401 from the Ontario-Quebec border to Windsor. The first phase includes a public awareness and multi-media campaign and a series of three workshops on cargo crime mitigation strategies and the second phase will focus on providing training and awareness to law enforcement, raising the profile of cargo crime and its consequences in the judicial system and strengthening the “partnership” to reduce cargo crime. For more information, visit www.ontruck.org/cargocrimeworkshop Transport Canada has collaborated with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and others to launch the North American Fatigue Management Program (NAFMP), a voluntary, interactive web-based educational and training program developed to provide commercial truck and bus drivers and carriers with an awareness of the factors contributing to fatigue and its impact on performance and safety. We welcome this collaboration aimed to improve motor carrier safety and increase alertness and reduce fatigue. For more information, please visit www.nafmp.org. We always enjoy interacting with our diverse readership through traditional and modern channels of communication. Thanks to all for the continued patronage. Kenworth K270 and K370 Cabovers Offer New Option For Adding a Second 45-Gallon Fuel Tank
K
enworth’s K270 and K370 medium duty cabovers now offer the option of a second 45-gallon fuel tank, providing customers greater range and longer operating times between refuelings. The second, 45-gallon rectangular fuel tank utilizes approximately 28 inches of frame space, clearance between the battery box and the fuel tank is nearly 5-1/2 inches, and from back of the cab to the back of
cabovers over medium duty conventional trucks is a 55-degree wheel cut for a tighter turning radius and greater maneuverability for operating in crowded urban environments. The bumper to back of cab (BBC) of only 63.4 inches for the Kenworth cabovers – compared to a 106-inch BBC on medium duty conventionals – also provides plenty of room
fuel tank is just over 100 inches on the passenger side frame rail. The second 45-gallon tank for the K270 and K370 is available with 19.5-inch tires and wheelbases of 166, 178, 190, 202, 214, 226 and 238 inches, or with 22.5-inch tires and wheelbases of 170, 182, 194, 206, 218, 230 and 242 inches. The Kenworth cabovers are for beverage distributors, pickup and delivery, furniture, food processors and other urban delivery applications. A key advantage of the K270 and K370
for a large van body. This enables the K270 and K370 to haul more payload with a shorter overall length. This is especially important as overall truck length is becoming more regulated in some major metropolitan cities. In addition, the Kenworth cabovers offer a large windshield for enhanced visibility, and room to carry a three-person crew with a driver air-suspended seat and two-person bench seat. Both the K270 and K370 are powered by a 6.7-liter PACCAR PX-7 engine with a standard 220-hp rating and 520 lb-ft of maximum torque. Optional ratings are 240-hp and 560 lb-ft of torque and 250-hp with 660 lb-ft of torque. Both models are available with Allison 5-speed transmissions. RT

(NC)—Ask any driver across the country about what upsets them most about owning their car and chances are they’ll say one word: insurance. Not only does it seem to go up every year but there doesn’t seem to be a way that a good driver can control his or her rates, until now. A system called usage-based insurance tracks a driver’s habits and analyzes the data in order to calculate any potential insurance savings. It’s a program that has been common in the United States, Britain and Europe for several years. Now, Canadians can start taking advantage of this tool. This past May, Desjardins Insurance launched its usagebased insurance program — Ajusto. New and existing customers of Desjardins Insurance in Quebec and Ontario will be among the first in the country to use this new program and potentially save up to 25 per cent in addition to other savings offered by Desjardins Insurance. Ajusto will be launched in other provinces over the coming months. “This is truly an innovative and personalized technology that will help transform the traditional model of car insurance. By tailoring premiums to individual driving habits in addition to traditional predictive factors such as age, gender, type of vehicle and home location, drivers can now take control of their savings,” said John West, vice-president of Business Development at Desjardins Insurance. “Our studies show that our employees who participated in the Ajusto pilot program were on track to achieve an average additional savings of 12 per cent.” How does it work? Ajusto is a free and voluntary program for owners of cars made in 1998 or later with limited exceptions. The driver’s habits are tracked through a small wireless telematics device that is easily installed into the vehicle’s diagnostic port, usually located under the steering wheel. The data is collected and updated daily into an online dashboard. The customer can then access the dashboard to view a graphic of their savings. This same information is then used by Desjardins Insurance on a confidential basis solely to determine applicable savings upon renewal. The program measures three factors to determine cost savings: • Distance travelled annually (up to 10 per cent off) • Extent and frequency of hard braking and acceleration (up to 10 per cent off) • Time of day the vehicle is driven (up to 5 per cent off) Premiums will not increase as a result of participating in the program nor will it result in any other adverse effects. Customers can opt-out of the program at any time and without penalty. For more information on the Ajusto program, please visit www.ajusto.com or watch the video at www.youtube.com/ mouvementdesjardins. RT

Best Fleets to Drive For: Canada will honour top employers in Trucking A new national program will soon honour fleets which have established the best workplaces in Canada’s trucking industry. Best Fleets to Drive For: Canada will be led and managed by Trucking HR Canada, a national partnership-based organization that develops, shares and promotes the trucking industry’s best practices in human resources and training. The program will be powered by CarriersEdge systems and technology. Best Fleets to Drive For is an annual survey and contest conducted by CarriersEdge and Truckload Carriers Association, identifying for-hire trucking companies that provide the best workplace experiences for drivers. The Canadian program will build on the successes of that initiative, but focus exclusively on Canadian fleets and their human resources issues. For-hire and private fleets will each have unique selection criteria, with independent programs run in partnership with the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) and Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC), respectively. The need to promote positive human resources practices was emphasized by CTA’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Driver Shortage in Trucking. In its statement of core values to help address a long-term, chronic shortage of qualified drivers, the task force noted that compensation packages need to compete with other employment options, while issues like driver wellness and driver security should also be a priority. CTA & CargoNet Announce September Event to Deal With Cargo Crime Along 401 Corridor
T
he Canadian Trucking Alliance in partnership with Verisk Crime Analytics Canada - CargoNet, police agencies and the Ontario Trucking Association has announced the official launch of Project Momentum -- an initiative to raise awareness of the growing threat of cargo crime in the high risk corridor along Highway 401 from the Ontario-Quebec border to Windsor. Project Momentum will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase includes a public awareness and multi-media campaign and a series of three workshops on cargo crime mitigation strategies attended by carriers, law enforcement, shippers, the insurance sector, and officials from all three levels of government. Jeff Bryan, president of Jeff Bryan Transport and OTA Chairman, will host the first workshop on September 5th in

Burford, Ontario where his company is located. “The goal is to educate everyone from carriers, to the courts, to the public of the scope and seriousness of cargo crime and the impact it and the organized syndicates behind it is having not only on the business world but in our communities,” he said. “There is some momentum building,” says Bryan. “Industry has taken the first steps, law enforcement is there beside us to help, but so much more needs to be done.” Including, he says, tougher sentencing. Project Momentum’s second phase will focus on providing training and awareness to law enforcement, raising the profile of cargo crime and its consequences in the judicial system and strengthening the “partnership” to reduce cargo crime. Plans to roll out similar events in other hot spots across Canada are being planned. RT

Canadians have a double standard on distracted driving
(NC)—A recent poll by Allstate Insurance Company of Canada shows that although 94 per cent of respondents are aware of current distracted driving penalties, only seven per cent say this would prevent them from driving distracted. Respondents were more likely to name awareness of the dangers of distracted driving as a deterrent. However, this awareness hasn’t lead to a significant change on the roads. Insurance industry research shows that while most people understand the dangers of distracted driving, and disapprove of the behaviour, many of these individuals admit to engaging in those practices. “We found that 89 per cent of teen respondents said they would voice a concern if they were a passenger in a vehicle where a driver was driving distracted, and yet many of these same respondents admit to doing it
themselves,” says Saskia Matheson, spokesperson for Allstate Canada. Some of the most common distractions reported in the poll include drivers adjusting music (82 per cent), eating or drinking (59 per cent) and talking on the phone without a handsfree device (15 per cent). “Car crashes are the leading cause of death among youth in Canada, and distracted driving puts everyone in danger,” says Matheson. “We need to personalize the risks and consequences and turn awareness into action and real behavioral change.” Matheson says tools and resources like Allstate Canada’s distracted driving pledge and parent-teen contract (available at goodhandsadvice.ca/ distraction) can help parents and educators talk to kids about safety behind the wheel. CLIFFORD TRUCK SHOW CONTINUES TO WOW!
T
he Clifford Truck Show was another smashing success this year, held June 28-30 at Rotary Park in the quaint little village of Clifford, Ont. About 160 trucks, maybe even more, crowded into the park for a festive weekend celebration of chrome, and even a little rust. I’ve written about this show before, and what’s great about it is that you’ll find all manner of trucks here: the classic beauties, the everyday workhorses and the untouched antiques that haven’t yet had their turn in the shop for an overhaul. If you have an interesting truck to show, you’ll be welcome at Clifford. There are no prizes and a very small exhibitor area; this show is all about the trucks. Once again this year, Mack was well represented in the Bulldog Coral. One of the more interesting trucks on display was this Scania from Holland. A huge thumb’s up goes out to the Great Lakes Truck Club, which puts on this grassroots truck show. Also, a special thanks to the all-decked-out-in-pink Convoy gals for the unexpected birthday serenading. If you couldn’t make it to the show yourself, please enjoy some of the pics below and try your best to make it next year. RT

Alliance Truck Parts Reminds Truckers to Stay Cool with HVAC Maintenance Tips
A
s temperatures begin to heat up, the last thing a driver needs is to be stuck on the road without air conditioning. To keep truck drivers as comfortable as possible, Alliance Truck Parts reminds truckers of the necessity of regular HVAC maintenance. Inspection Interval Have your entire HVAC system inspected on a yearly basis to ensure it is operating efficiently. Early detection is key. Even small leaks or damaged components can spread damage to the entire system, adding up to expensive repair bills and increasing downtime. Repairing Leaks If you notice a leak, immediately take your truck in for an inspection. Do not use any leak fixing products. They are only a temporary fix and can increase your repair bills due to excess debris in the system. HVAC Air Filter Maintenance A dirty or clogged air filter dramatically reduces the airflow into the cab and can cause bad odors. Check and replace your filter regularly to ensure it is clean. The best way to tell if your
filter is in good condition is to remove any debris, then shine a light through it. If you can see the light, the filter probably is clean. Condenser Maintenance Keeping your condenser free of debris ensures it will maintain a perfect cooling temperature in your cab. Check and clean your condenser regularly, especially in the fall and winter when leaves and other materials build up on the fins. Be careful cleaning the fins; bending or breaking fragile condenser fins can cause problems throughout the entire HVAC system. Detecting a Faulty Blower Motor A faulty blower motor will reduce or even stop airflow to your cab, decreasing the performance of your HVAC system. If you notice decreased airflow or hear a buzzing, grinding, or humming sound as you turn on your HVAC, take your truck to an Alliance Truck Parts dealer for an immediate inspection. If left unchecked, a faulty blower motor eventually will lower the pressure of the freon running to your condenser, potentially damaging your A/C system. RT

Transport Canada collaborates with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and others to launch interactive driver fatigue management tool
T
he Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, and Anne S. Ferro, Administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) have announced the launch of the North American Fatigue Management Program (NAFMP), a website that provides training and education on commercial bus and truck driver fatigue management. The NAFMP is a voluntary, interactive web-based educational and training program developed to provide commercial truck and bus drivers and carriers with an awareness of the factors contributing to fatigue and its impact on performance and safety. It provides: • information on how to develop a corporate culture that facilitates reduced driver fatigue; • fatigue management education for drivers, drivers’ families, carrier executives and managers, shippers/receivers and dispatchers; • information on sleep disorders, screening and treatment; • driver and trip scheduling information; and,
• information on Fatigue Management Technologies. The program was developed by multiple partners, including Alberta Employment and Immigration, Alberta Transportation, Alberta Worker’s Compensation Board, Alberta Motor Transport Association, Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail du Québec, Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the American Transportation Research Institute, and Transport Canada (TC). The NAFMP fatigue management tool does not replace or override the FMCSA or TC’s regulation on hours-of-service. FMCSA and TC-regulated commercial motor carriers and drivers continue to have a duty to know and comply with the respective FMCSA or TC hours-of-service regulations. The NAFMP is a complement to hours-of-service regulations that aims to improve motor carrier safety and increase alertness and reduce fatigue. For more information on the North American Fatigue Management Program, please visit www.nafmp.org. RT

How Secure is Your Cargo L
ori was loading a particular metal for the first time with this company. She was excited with her new career, the thoughts of traveling all over the country, the feel of commanding a big truck down the highway. She was excited but also very cautious. She had been taught well in school of the dangers of the open road. She had been a top student and graduated top of her class so there was no worry about her handling life on the road. What she found out since she was hired is that life on the road doesn’t always match the controlled environment of the classroom and this load was a premium example. Remembering her lessons on cargo securement, she focused on weight, blocking, and movement. There was a couple problems however, the freight was giant pieces of metal called ingots, she had a van trailer, each one weighed around 2000 pounds, and she had no idea how to block them in. Being new she decided to
follow the instructions of the shipper, after all they loaded these every day. Lori was told to load them down the centre so they wouldn’t move ahead on her. It sounded like sound advice so she loaded that way. Beginning her trip she was very nervous, she stopped as she was supposed to check the cargo and all seemed intact. As she rolled down the road things seemed fine to her but in the back of the trailer something different was happening. The load was shifting! There was one important point that Lori forgot when loading, the fact that trailers vibrate from side to side when traveling down the road and the freight was slowly creating space within the load. At her next stop she checked the load and saw that the ingots were beginning to move. She became nervous but there was no way she could move them back in line on her own. She decided to take a chance and continue to her destination. Driving
very cautiously she reached the city limits, one more hour and she was there. No problem she thought, then it happened........ All she remembers is telling the officer how she was driving down the road when this car came out of nowhere, it had darted into traffic from the entrance ramp. Once in front of Lori the car slammed on its brakes to avoid the car in front causing Lori to brake hard and lock up the wheels of the truck. She couldn’t remember anything after that but the accident recovery team explained it to her. The ingots had moved out of line enough to create space within the load. When the accident happened the hard brake shoved the load forward causing the trailer weight to be put on the drive wheels of the truck. The weight blew the air bags causing the trailer to sit on the frame rails of the tractor. Lori was charged with an unsecured load and the four hour clean up caused her company much money,
and her much stress. She had learned the hard way about life on the road. Many times a load may seem secure but will eventually move due to the vibration and constant movement of the vehicle. Make sure all freight cannot move, is secure with proper bars and strapping. RT

Average Age of Canadian Truck Driver Even Older Than Reported
A
n analysis of the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) by the Conference Board of Canada shows that the average age of a truck driver has continued to increase at a faster rate than the rest of the labour force and is even older than previously thought. In its report on the driver shortage and economic implications released earlier this year, the Conference Board relied on the 2006 Census and Labour Force Survey to find the average driver age to be 44 years – four years higher than it was for the average worker and increasing more rapidly as well. The Conference Board characterized the situation the trucking industry finds itself in – a rapidly aging and relatively older workforce of drivers combined with few young entering the occupation – as a “demographic tsunami.” It estimated that the national shortage of truck drivers could reach 33,000 by 2020. The more recent numbers from the NHS (which is voluntary and replaces the long census questionnaire) confirms this challenge confronting the industry and suggests the situation may be even more pronounced. Based on its review of the NHS data, the Conference Board now finds the average truck driver age is 46 years, compared to the average age for all workers in Canada of 41.5 years. Most importantly, the Conference Board says the increase in the average driver age is due to a drop in the share of drivers between 20 and 29 years old. In 2006 11.6 per cent of truck drivers were in that age group but in 2011 this share declined to just 8.8 per cent of the driver population. Also of note is the fact that in 2006 the share of drivers in the 30 to 34 year range was 10 per cent, the same as it was for the total labour force. However, by 2011 8.5 per cent of drivers found themselves in this age group. For the total labour force there was a slight increase to 10.4 per cent. On the other end of the spectrum the share of the driver
population in the age group 55 years and older has increased from 20 per cent to 26 per cent. Furthermore, the NHS data indicate that 4.4 per cent of drivers are 65 and over (compared to 3 per cent in 2006) while for the total labour force the share of this age cohort increased from 2.6 per cent to 3.5 per cent. According to the Conference Board, this confirms that in the trucking industry more than in others a primary source of “new” labour is delayed retirements – which it says is “nothing more than a bandage solution.” The Conference Board was also able to examine the variation in the driver age by province. The NHS data indicate drivers are slightly “younger” in Alberta, where the average age is 44.9 years (in part reflecting the generally younger labour force in Alberta (40.6 years relative to the national average of 41.5 years)). On the other hand, the average driver age is over 47 years in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Manitoba (although in provinces where the driver population is particularly small some caution should be taken when interpreting the results). The data also show that truck driver remains the second most common occupation among men in Canada after retail sales person. Unsurprisingly, Ontario continues to be home to the largest number of drivers, with over 92,000. Quebec, Alberta and B.C. follow with 57,000 39,000 and 32,000 respectively. The Conference Board concludes “it will ultimately be up to the industry to address this ongoing challenge and to make the occupation more attractive to younger drivers. But as we also put forth (in its earlier report), it will also be important to convince customers of the need to address this challenge now and to work with them to develop strategies that will make best use of drivers’ time, as the trucking industry has a long track record of sharing its productivity benefits with customers through lower prices.” RT

PETERBILT UNVEILS NEW INTERIOR FOR MODEL 320
P
eterbilt Motors Company has unveiled its all-new Model 320 interior during the Waste Expo show held recently in New Orleans. The new ProBilt interior for Peterbilt’s low-cab forward vehicle features ergonomic improvements, system enhancements and improved overall visibility for maximum operator efficiency and comfort. “The Model 320’s new interior delivers unparalleled fit and finish and provides drivers a comfortable and productive operating environment for outstanding performance in this specialty market,” said Robert Woodall, Peterbilt Director of Sales and Marketing. “Inside and out, Peterbilt’s Model 320 performs the most challenging jobs with uncompromising durability and quality.” Ergonomic, Efficient Design The Model 320 interior underwent a floor-to-ceiling re-design, beginning with the new ergonomic dash layout. An in-mold process embeds color directly into the dash for a durable, long-lasting finish, which virtually eliminates fading, scratching and peeling. Removable dash panels allow easy access to electrical and HVAC components. An improved HVAC system maintains reliable performance and consistent heating and cooling throughout the cab. The new header includes overhead HVAC controls and toggle switches for body devices and the ConcertClass audio system. The cab’s B-pillar has been re-designed to include cab corner windows for increased visibility. A lowered dash brow and a large, retractable sunshade that spreads the length of the front windshield also contributes to improved overall visibility. The new interior includes a large, multi-purpose center console. Removable panels allow for easy installation and convenient access to body controls. Storage space is abundant, with multiple large storage compartments, a space designed specifically for a small lunch cooler, driver and passenger side cup holders as well as a USB charging port and 12VDC charging outlet. The cab features the extensive use of contemporary LED lighting, including two directional dome lights in the headliner, as well as two over-the-door lights and one large light on the back wall. LED lighting reduces eye fatigue and power consumption and also provides extended bulb life. Safety and comfort were key considerations in the new pedal position package. Additional features include: • Padded headliner for improved thermal and acoustic performance; • 4-speaker audio system;
• Vertical-parked windshield wipers; • Header and over-door storage capacity; • Padded door panels with power controls for windows
and mirrors; • Tilt/telescoping steering wheel; • Multi-function turn-stalk; • Heated seats; • Available in left-hand and right-hand drive configurations. The ProBilt interior is available in Titanium Gray. Model 320 Features & Benefits The foundation of Peterbilt’s rugged Model 320 is the huck-bolted aluminum cab that features lap seam construction and bulkhead style doors on a zinc-coated, steel subframe for maximum durability and corrosion resistance. In applications where stopping distance is critical, the 320 comes standard with air disc brakes, which improve brake life and reduce service time. An industry-leading, 65-degree cab tilt provides technicians easy access to key service points for improved serviceability and reduced downtime. Use of LED marker lights, instead of incandescents, extends service intervals. The Model 320 offers a full range of axle selections in single, tandem or tri-drive configurations, plus a full complement of liftable axle options and a tandem steer front axle configuration rated at 36,000 lbs. In addition, the Model 320 is available in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) with the Cummins Westport ISL G and ISX 12 G Engines. Both configurations provide flexibility to locate the fuel tanks either off the frame rail or integrated with the body. RT August 2013 RoadToday.com

LEAVE A LANE. IT ' S THE LAW.
Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

LaugOUhT Loud! SILENCE PLEASE! Eight-year-old Sally brought her report card home from school. Her marks were good ... mostly A’s and a couple of B’s. However, her teacher had written across the bottom: “Sally is a smart little girl, but she has one fault. She talks too much in school. I have an idea I am going to try, which I think may break her of the habit.” Sally’s dad signed her report card, putting a note on the back: “Please let me know if your idea works on Sally because I would like to try it out on her mother.” ROBBERY LESSON A robber walks into a bank, produces a gun and points to the teller saying, “Give me all the money or you’ll be geography.” The teller looks up and says, “Don’t you mean history?” The robber replies, “Don’t change the subject.” RAISING CHILDREN An elderly gentleman was strolling through a quiet residential neighbourhood when he came upon a little boy sitting on the curb, crying. “What’s the trouble, son?” he asked. “Are you lost?” “Worse than that,” the youngster sobbed. “Mom lost her book on child rearing and now she’s using her own judgment!” EXAM SCARE Father to son after exam: “Let me see your report card.” Son: “My friend just borrowed it. He wants to scare his parents.”

TRP Introduces Trailer Camshafts and Bushing Kits TRP has announced the availability of trailer camshafts and bushing kits designed to meet the demands of today’s heavy-duty brakes. The trailer camshafts and bushing kits feature camshaft head and shaft splines induction-hardened for long life and durability, forged camshaft heads for precision-sizing and strength, and a nationwide 12-month warranty. They are offered in a variety of sizes for all makes. “The brake camshaft is the foundation of the truck and trailer unit’s air brake system,” said Jeff Hughes, TRP development manager. “Worn camshafts can cause uneven or premature brake wear, which can result in decreased stopping power.” Worn trailer camshaft bushings can also ultimately lead to an out-of-service violation. Since 1980, motor carrier safety officials and industry representatives from the United States, Canada and Mexico have worked together through the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) to develop uniform commercial vehicle inspections. CVSA developed protocols for inspections and the various criteria that warrant declaring vehicles out-of-service. The out-of-service criteria became the backbone of the Federal

Ruptured Eardrum
he tympanic membrane, more commonly known as the eardrum, is a thin layer of tissue that separates your outer ear from the middle ear. Although fairly uncommon, a ruptured or perforated eardrum can occur. The good news is that in most cases a ruptured eardrum will heal within a few weeks without any treatment. The main functions of the eardrum are to aid in hearing and to act as a barrier for such things as water and other foreign substances from entering the middle ear. A common cause of a ruptured or perforated eardrum is a middle ear infection. The infection results in an accumulation of fluid in the middle ear which increases the pressure on the inside of the eardrum. If this pressure is substantial enough it may cause the eardrum to rupture. Another cause of a ruptured eardrum is barotrauma. Barotrauma is caused by unequal pressure on either side of the eardrum. A common example of barotrauma is associated with air travel. As a result, barotrauma is commonly referred to as airplane ear.
Barotrauma can also occur when scuba diving or direct trauma to the ear. Injury to the eardrum caused by loud noises or blasts is referred to as acoustic trauma. Examples of this include explosions or gun shots. In these cases, the large sound wave essential tears the eardrum. Lastly, foreign objects such as cotton swabs may also cause injury to the eardrum. The signs and symptoms associated with an eardrum rupture will vary from person to person. However, a common symptom is severe, constant ear pain that suddenly stops. In the case of an ear infection, a clear or bloody discharge may leak from the ear. Often times, varying degrees of hearing loss and/or ringing in the ear is noticed. In severe cases vertigo, nausea or vomiting may also be present. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience any of the above symptoms. Your doctor can often diagnose a perforated eardrum by taking a detailed history and performing a physical examination. During the physical examination your doctor will inspect your ear using an otoscope. If your
doctor feels it is necessary, he or she may order other diagnostic testing to determine the root cause as well as the severity of the rupture. As stated earlier, most perforated eardrums heal without medical intervention. However, if the eardrum does not heal on its own, medical treatment may be necessary. The overall goal of treatment is to close or seal the ruptured eardrum. Treatments may include an eardrum patch which is essentially a paper patch placed over the hole or in severe cases surgery may be required. A surgery called tympanoplasty in which a surgeon grafts a small patch of your own tissue over the ruptured eardrum is usually performed on an outpatient basis. If you have a ruptured eardrum there are a few things you can do at home to help it heal. First of all, try to keep the eardrum dry by using waterproof ear plugs or a cotton ball coated with petroleum jelly during showers. Avoid placing foreign objects such as cotton swabs in the ear until the eardrum has healed fully. Lastly, refrain from blowing your nose as the pressure
caused by this action may cause re-injury. Preventing a ruptured eardrum is not always possible. However, taking precautions such as wearing protective earplugs during work or recreational activities that expose you to loud sounds is always a good idea. Avoiding airplane flights when you have a cold may also reduce the risk of a ruptured eardrum. In the case of children suffering from a middle ear infection, it is important to consult with your health care professional as soon as possible to obtain the proper advice and treatment. Until next month, drive safely.

Reusable Filters: Another Way Truck Fleets Can Lower Maintenance Costs W
ith the ever-mounting cost of fuel beyond the control of heavy-duty fleet managers, many are focusing on maintenance costs as a way of reining-in manageable expenses. Among the maintenance items that are gaining new attention are filters. An increasing number of fleets and independent operators are looking at reusable or cleanable filters as a way of saving on maintenance costs. Filter outlays can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for some fleets. Although initially more expensive that standard filters, some reusable filters promise to survive the lifespan of the most durable high-speed diesel engines, providing a strong return on investment and a significant relief to stretched maintenance budgets. “Reusable filters are not giant sellers in the marketplace yet, but sales are likely to continue growing in the future, particularly if the OEMs and the aftermarket in general are willing to acknowledge their use as a recommended practice. The fleets are the big category, and that’s what our task force is trying to look at,” says Karl Dedolph, President of D3 Consulting. The task force of which Dedolph is the chairperson is sponsored by the ATA’s Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC), and is currently qualifying questions for the evaluation of cleanable and reusable filtration devices. The filters under consideration include air, coolant, fuel, lube - any kind of filtration that is used on class 6, 7 and 8 trucks. “The main challenges that the task force addresses are economic,” Dedolph explains. “And the potential benefits of heavy-duty truckers using reusable/cleanable filters are certainly within that scope, including savings on filter costs, inventory costs, and disposal costs.” He adds that those fleets and owner operators who are interested in the “green” benefits of “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” will probably also be impressed with the sustainability appeal that this type of filter inherently offers.
44 RoadToday.com August 2013
Dedolph was also quick to point out that while quality reusable filters do seem to meet the economic criteria, there are some other important standards that reusable filters must meet. Filtration devices are like basic insurance policies for all types of engines, helping them operate efficiently and protecting their systems, he says. In order to fulfill that “insurance,” filters must be meet the accepted OEM standards for efficiency, capacity and flow. Of these three measures, capacity seems to be the prominent one in the eyes of the TMC task force. If a reusable filter does not provide the necessary capacity over the PM duration, the other economic and performance benefits could be in question. The cleanable, reusable filter technology was first developed, tested, and manufactured by Parker Hannifin’s Racor Division almost a decade before they turned the technology over to Filtration Technology Group (FTG), a full-service Racor distributor, which has independently manufactured it for the past several years. Parker Hannifin Corporation, a $13 billion, global company, is the world’s leading diversified manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems. As far as potential savings are concerned, FTG has cited cases where a fleet of 300 Class 8 heavy-duty trucks has tracked its use of conventional filters for a 10-year period and calculated expenditures of $350,000. There is evidence that converting to reusable filters would save the same fleet over a thousand dollars per vehicle. He adds that in some ways DPF (Diesel Particulate Filters) make the best case for reusable filters. The ceramic core that is used today is expensive, perhaps $4,000 to replace, Dedolph adds. Plus, the core will sometimes crack or chip or burn too hot and have to be replaced. Or they won’t withstand the cleaning mechanism. RT
