The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. The 4th Annual Road Today Truck Show 2012 – Canada’s Multicultural Truck Show will be rolling out on May 26th & 27th at the Powerade Centre in Brampton. The trucking event will include plenty of activities including Inside & Outside Trade Show, Show & Shine Competition, Job Fair, Trucking Excellence Awards, Family Entertainment, Ethnic Food Stalls and lots more. Entry & parking to the show is always free for visitors. Companies interested in reaching out to the changing face of the trucking industry are encouraged to contact the show management and reserve the booth space at the earliest. From March 1 to April 30, 2012, the Region of Peel prohibits any axle on a commercial motor vehicle or trailer to transmit to the highway weight in excess of 5,000 kg (5 tonnes per axle) on various Regional roads. Violators can be fined in accordance with Section 125 of the Highway Traffic Act. Inside this edition we carry a detailed notice highlighting the 2012 axle weight load restrictions from the Region of Peel. We request all truckers to have a look and keep the information handy for ready reference.

The Harper government’s Red Tape Commission has issued its final report, titled ‘Cutting Red Tape; Freeing Business to Grow.’ The report reviews the burden federal regulations place of Canadian businesses and highlights areas for potential reform. There are key recommendations in report pertaining to trucking and we hope the same will be duly addressed in near future. Police services across Ontario say they are seeing an increase in “pocket dialed” and unintentional 911 calls. These calls represent a serious threat to public safety and negatively impact police resources. Pocket dials happen when a keypad on a mobile device carried in a pocket, purse, or backpack is accidentally pressed. To prevent a cellular phone from pocket dialing, keep it in a holster that is designed for that specific cellular phone. Every 911 call is taken seriously. When a 911 caller doesn’t respond, that could be a sign of trouble – a possibility emergency responders can’t ignore. If this happens to you and you find that you have called 911 accidentally, please do not hang up. Let the emergency operator know it was a pocket dial. Livestock Haulers Go Live With Campaign to Raise Industry Standards Sales Professional

hether they’re hauling cattle, sheep, hogs or poultry, Ontario livestock carriers and their drivers all share a critical interest – ensuring the animals hauled in their tractortrailers are handled and transported safely and securely. Carrier members of the Ontario Trucking Association’s Livestock Transporters’ Division are the unquestioned leaders of the livestock transportation industry in Canada and are proudly at the forefront of the food supply chain. Knowing that the transport of livestock is a specialized service which requires an expert level of knowledge and skills, the number one priority of Ontario Trucking Association’s Livestock Transporters’ Division is the safe and secure transport of animals. To help promote its goals and get buy-in from the food supply chain community, the OTA-LTD has developed a short, highdefinition video which outlines the safest driving practices, animal handling techniques, proper climate control, equipment upkeep and other important skills. Daimler PlatinumShield II: Meritor’s SecondGeneration Brake Shoe Coating Trucks North Punishes Rust-Jacking America eritor has announced it will begin the immediate production of PlatinumShield M II, a second-generation brake shoe coating that features an advanced formula uniquely suited to the needs of the Aftermarket customer to prevent rust-jacking. D

aimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has announced the addition of a second shift and plans to ramp up production at its Freightliner Truck Manufacturing Plant in Cleveland, N.C., creating more than 1,100 new jobs by the end of 2012. The additional workers represent a 72 percent increase in personnel at the plant and will include approximately 1,072 shop employees and an additional 29 engineering and support positions to facilitate increased production. A majority of the positions will be filled with recalled workers who were laid off in 2009.The ramp-up will nearly double the daily production rates at the Cleveland plant by October 2012. The increase in production capacity and hiring comes in response to demand growth which has created backorders as long as six months for the Freightliner Cascadia model. The Cleveland plant currently employs approximately 1,400 shop employees and 72 engineers, managers and support staff. The largest Freightliner Trucks manufacturing plant in the United States, this facility exclusively produces Class 8 on-highway truck models, including the Cascadia, Columbia and Argosy product lines.

ccording to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), statistics show that commercial drivers are three times more likely to have an accident or ‘safety-critical event’ if they’re reaching for a cell phone, and six times more likely if they’re dialing. As part of the effort to reduce distracted driving and enhance safety, hands-free calling is now the name of the game in the trucking industry. To help encourage hands-free calling, there are now stiff fines for drivers of up to $2,750 in the United States and smaller, yet significant fines in Canada, for using a hand-held cell phone while driving. Fleets may face a penalty of up to $11,000 if they fail to require their drivers to comply with the new U.S. cell phone regulations. Volvo Trucks Expands XE13 Horsepower Offering Volvo Trucks will now offer a 455 horsepower rating for the XE13 – exceptional efficiency – powertrain package. Volvo Trucks introduced the initial XE13 package with a 425 horsepower rating in September 2011. The new rating provides additional horsepower while still allowing the engine to cruise at just 1150 rpm at 65 mph.

“Our first introduction of the XE13 concept focused on exceptionally fuel-conscious fleets that spend considerable time cruising at highway speeds,” Ron Huibers, Volvo Trucks president of North American sales and marketing, said. “The new 455 horsepower rating is aimed toward the higher performance demands of long-haul fleets.” “Integrated with our Volvo engines, the intelligence of the proprietary Volvo I-Shift automated mechanical transmission and software gives us great flexibility as we expand our “downspeeding” concept to offer improved fuel efficiency.” said Ed Saxman, Volvo Trucks product manager – powertrain. Through the XE13 package, Volvo Trucks lowers engine rpm at a given vehicle speed, a concept Volvo calls “downspeeding.” “Customer data shows that the XE13 package consistently operates in the engine’s “sweet spot” – 1050 rpm to 1500 rpm – with up to 70 percent of operation in the most efficient range of 1100 rpm to 1200 rpm,” Saxman said. “Operating in this range yields about a 1.5 percent fuel efficiency improvement for every 100 rpm of “downspeeding,” so the XE13 package with the 455 horsepower rating will deliver about a 3 percent fuel efficiency gain.” Available on Volvo VN series tractors, the XE13 455 hp package is rated up to 80,000 pounds (GCWR) and includes the following components: • Volvo D13 engine with 455 horsepower and 1750 lb-ft of torque • Volvo I-Shift overdrive transmission with a 0.78:1 ratio • Axle ratios of 2.64 to 2.69 • Proprietary software that facilitates seamless communication between Volvo’s integrated powertrain components. Initially introduced in September 2011, Volvo Trucks’ XE13 powertrain package boosts fuel efficiency for Volvo customers, who are already achieving up to 8 percent improvements in fuel efficiency over EPA ’07 engines. In November 2009, the launch of Volvo’s EPA ’10 certified No Regen engines with SCR technology gave customers a 5 percent boost. Volvo’s powertrain enhancements and advanced aerodynamics announced at the 2011 Mid America Trucking Show deliver up to an additional 3 percent. 20

Federal Red Tape Commission Releases Final Report Recommendations include several matters pertaining to trucking

and their communication to regulated parties. Provide a predictable and uniform business environment across Canada for the trucking industry and to reduce current compliance burden and associated costs, Transport Canada engage its provincial and territorial counterparts with concrete proposals to advance the harmonization of regulations that pertain to the National Safety Code (including hours of service). The department should aim to eliminate unnecessary compliance burden on inter-provincial truck commerce stemming from differences in regulatory requirements across jurisdictions. Provide businesses with greater certainty and predictability through reasonable timelines and service standards, Transport Canada streamline its processing of exemptions under the Motor Vehicle Transport Act. Additionally, the Commission echoed many of the initiatives already announced by the Harper government in the recent Border Action Plan, including harmonizing “trusted trader” programs with the U.S., and reducing border wait times by improving programs such as Free and Secure Trade (FAST). CTA looks forward to discussing with Transport Canada and other government departments regarding the implications of the Red Tape Commission’s final recommendations on the trucking industry.

he Harper government’s Red Tape Commission has issued its final report, titled ‘Cutting Red Tape; Freeing Business

to Grow.’ The Commission is made up of a dozen MPs and business stakeholders, including Denis Prud’homme, former owner of Prud’homme Trucking and past president of the Saskatchewan Trucking Association. The report reviews the burden federal regulations place of Canadian businesses and highlights areas for potential reform. In 2011, CTA along with its members appeared before the Commission to recommend areas where reducing red tape can improve business efficiency and job growth. Key recommendations in report pertaining to trucking, include: Eliminate administrative burden on small businesses, Transport Canada implement plans to exempt small businesses that use smaller trucks locally from the administrative requirements in relation to hours of service (including the maintenance of logbooks). Increase the uniformity in the enforcement of the transport of dangerous goods regulatory regime and reduce administrative burden, Transport Canada accelerate initiatives designed to effect improvement in the consistency of application of program delivery

OPP caution public about 9-1-1 pocket dials T

he Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding the public about important but simple steps they can take to avoid what is commonly referred to as “9-1-1 pocket dials”. A pocket-dial occurs when a cellular phone stored in an insecure fashion in places such as pockets, handbags and backpacks inadvertently place calls while being tossed about. Across

Ontario thousands of pocket dials are made every day to 9-1-1 Call Centres. OPP Provincial Communications Centres (PCC) continue to see far too many pocket dials. In 2011, York Regional Police Communications 9-1-1 Call Centre responded to 97,886 accidental pocket dials, averaging 268 dials per day and 37.33 per cent of the total 9-1-1 call volume. These calls unnecessarily tie up 9-1-1 lines and can result in delayed response for people who are dealing with real emergencies and need immediate assistance from police, fire or medical personnel. To prevent a cellular phone from pocket dialing, keep it in a holster that is designed for that specific cellular phone. If you don’t have a holster, make sure to lock your device’s keypad. Since some cellular phones allow 9-1-1 to be dialled even with a locked keypad, it is important to read your user manual or contact your cellular phone service provider to find out what other features are available to prevent pocket dials. Every 9−1−1 call is taken seriously. When a 9−1−1 caller doesn’t respond, that could be a sign of trouble – a possibility emergency responders can’t ignore. If this happens to you and you find that you have called 9−1−1 accidentally, please do not hang up. Let the emergency operator know it was a pocket dial. Volvo Trucks Hits Record North American Market Share in 2011

According to retail sales data compiled by WardsAuto Group, Volvo Trucks in 2011 recorded the North American heavy-duty truck industry’s largest market share gain of the year. Volvo also hit a company record market share of 12.1 percent of the combined U.S. and Canadian retail market, and reached record penetration levels for its proprietary engines and innovative I-Shift automated manual transmission. WardsAuto Group gathers industry data on retail sales to end-users. Volvo Trucks’ record year was fueled by a particularly strong performance in the United States, where the company’s retail market share jumped nearly three points and retails increased 109 percent over 2010. For the combined U.S. and Canadian market, the company hit a record 12.1 percent market share (vs. 9.6 percent), and boosted its total retail volume to 23,820 vehicles, vs. 12,100 in 2010. “Coming after our two-point market share gain in 2010, this record 2011 performance demonstrates the market’s continued recognition of the excellent fuel efficiency and industry-leading driver comfort and safety features that Volvo Trucks is delivering today,” said Ron Huibers, president of North American truck sales and marketing. “The performance of our broad dealer network helped achieve an improved customer mix, and our fuel efficiency leadership means we’re well positioned as fleets intensify their focus on lowering fuel costs.” Huibers credited the excellent performance of Volvo Trucks’ proprietary engines and the company’s innovative I-Shift automated manual transmission for driving sales. The percentage of Volvo trucks sold with the company’s proprietary engines hit a record of nearly 80 percent in 2011, and I-Shift penetration also hit a record level of more than 40 percent.

ost of us transportation folks realise that social media is here to stay. In fact, quite a few have starting using social media to network, market and sell. For some of us, however, social media is still something we think we should be doing but just haven’t gotten around to. Others are perplexed and secretly intimidated by terms like ‘tweet,’ ‘hoot’ and ‘blog.’ But for many of us, the issue with

MACK Granite Medium WSIB Premiums Heavy Duty (MHD) Rolls for Trucking Into Vegas to Increase 2 Per Cent in 2012

A

fter initially indicating that the trucking industry should expect to see workers’ compensation premiums rise by the same order of magnitude of last year’s 11.1 per cent increase, the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) appears to have had a re-think and instead has announced that the 2012 rate increase for the trucking industry will be a more moderate 2 per cent. According to the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA), which along with other employer groups in the province has been urging the WSIB to do a better job of cost control as opposed to jacking up payroll taxes on employers, this is perhaps an indication that the message is starting to sink in. Nevertheless, says OTA president, David Bradley, “any increase in these economic times is unwelcome and while a 2 per cent increase is better than the double-digit increase of last year, it is not clear what the long-term performance or burden of the WSIB will be.” The 2012 rate will be the last ad hoc premium rate setting before the Funding Review is completed and a new rate setting model is implemented. In 2012, the General Trucking (rate group 570) rate will increase from $6.43 to $6.56, the Courier Services (rate group 577) rate will increase from $2.89 to $2.95 and the Warehousing (rate group 560) rate will increase from $3.28 to $3.35.

ou’ve heard me talk in the past about stepping up to the plate when you’re going into business for yourself. In fact I think you should step up to the plate when becoming a professional driver in general. Just when you think people are starting to get it I read an article or hear a story about how foolish people can be. I just finished reading an article on how to dress and operate when going through a road test and interview at a company that again was going over the basics of how to dress, and how to act. Have we not beat that horse to death already, have people not got the message? Apparently not or we wouldn’t be talking about it. The same thing happens in business, eventually you have to get the message. Eventually you have to decide if you are going to be in business or be a statistic for failure. Now before I get all kinds of comments I realize that businesses fail for much more reasons than not operating business like or taking themselves too seriously. Those aren’t the businesses I am talking about here. There are many factors that determine if a business stays profitable or not. That being said I do believe that through an entrepreneurial view and Owner Operator standpoint many people getting into business today take it seriously until they have to do the work. So what am I getting at here? Evaluation, operation, and dedication are the keys to success as

a business owner or Owner Operator. For those of you that are new Owner Operators you will get good and bad information on the industry, certain companies, and the life of an Owner Operator from others. That advice however may not be from sources that are interested in seeing you succeed in this industry. To succeed in this industry and be one of the successful instead of one of the statistics takes working with the keys of a successful operation. The three keys listed above if used

correctly will go a long way to helping you have a successful business whether it be as an Owner Operator or other business arrangement. Evaluation is the first one however these aren’t in any particular order. Evaluation of your business is the key to creating a successful business. I remember when I started out in business I thought I was on the right track, but the drive for success, and the will to take on some risks for rewards down the road kept me evaluating each success and failure. The failures were turned around as learning

curves and either revised or trashed so they will never happen again. As I look back down the road if I hadn’t been evaluating my business, if I hadn’t kept pushing the envelope for new opportunities we wouldn’t be in business today. It is important to keep your eye on the big picture. Operation is an area that many people get lost in especially Owner Operators and entrepreneurs. They get overwhelmed in the many tasks and duties expected of them and end up doing all of them badly or some not at all. Bookkeeping and taxes come to mind in this area. You need to keep fine-tuning your operation, making sure the important areas are being taken care of by qualified people not just someone looking to make an extra buck. It is vital that you keep evaluating what works and how to make your operation run smoothly. Go through a tax audit and you will quickly learn what information is required. Dedication is the final key and when you signed on the dotted line, or you left your job to open a business, or you decided to make this your life’s work, you went into dedication mode. Be dedicated to being successful in your business by thinking like a business owner, getting advice from professionals, evaluating your operation on a regular basis. Doing that will go a long way in helping you become a success rather than a statistic.

think that it is safe to say that all of us have experienced hiccups at some point during our lives. In most cases, hiccups are more of an annoyance rather than a serious m e d i c a l condition. In this article I am going to discuss what causes hiccups as well as simple ways to help prevent and treat them. Let’s get started. Hiccups are due to involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, which is the muscle that separates your chest and abdominal cavities. The diaphragm plays a significant role in breathing. The characteristic “hiccup” sound is caused by the sudden closure of your vocal cords which follows each contraction of the diaphragm. The most common causes of hiccups are over eating and drinking carbonated or alcoholic beverages. Sudden changes in temperature and emotional stress have also been linked to hiccups. Generally, a bout of hiccups only lasts a few minutes however, in rare cases, hiccups may last months. It is

important to consult your physician if your hiccups last more than 48 hours. Nerve damage or irritation is the most common cause of chronic hiccups. The two nerves that serve the diaphragm muscle are the vagus

and phrenic nerves. Conditions such as laryngitis or acid reflux may cause irritation of these nerves. In rarer cases, a tumor, cyst or goiter in your neck may put pressure on the nerves. If chronic hiccups are left untreated it can lead to speech, eating and sleeping problems. During the physical examination, your doctor will most likely perform a neurological exam which includes checking your reflexes, muscle tone, muscle strength, balance and coordination. In addition, if your doctor suspects a more serious underlying condition he or she may recommend more sophisticated lab testing. In this case, you may need

to give blood and urine samples. Your doctor may also suggest other imaging tests such as CT scans and MRIs to better visualize anatomical abnormalities. As stated earlier, most hiccups subside without m e d i c a l treatment. In the case of an underlying condition, your doctor will focus on treating the condition that is causing your hiccups. In some cases, your doctor will prescribe medications to help treat chronic hiccups. If conservative treatments fail to be successful, your doctor may recommend a nerve block injection. This involves injecting an anesthetic to block your phrenic nerve to stop the hiccups. Before you call your doctor’s office there are a few home remedies that you can try to relieve your hiccups. Holding your breath, breathing into a paper bag and sipping cold water may help to relieve your symptoms. Other alternative therapies such as hypnosis and acupuncture have also shown to be helpful in some cases. Until next month, drive safely.
