The Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) 100th anniversary being celebrated this year is an exciting, historic milestone.

We hope the dedicated workforce at the MTO continues to create a safe, reliable and efficient transportation network for the people of Ontario.

Thanks for your continued patronage to our award-winning magazine serving Canada’s multicultural trucking industry! Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the trucking industry plus all the regular column and features.

The winter of 2016 has been mild so far. Thanks to a strong El Nino this year, we saw mild temperatures and also a lack of precipitation. However, things could change drastically in a short time with snow accumulation, freezing rain and a big snow storm disrupting daily lives. We request and encourage all road users especially commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to stay alert and drive according to weather conditions. The current edition carries lot of multilingual informative content aimed to make your trip safer.

A report released by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) and The Co-operators has identified the need for a national action plan to combat distracted driving and recommends the creation of a National Working Group on Distracted Driving that can work with a diverse set of stakeholders to develop such a strategy. We welcome such initiatives aimed to facilitate coordination across multiple groups, efficient exchange of information and outcomes at the national level.

The Smart Trucker seminar series presented by Road Today Media Group and Bruce Outridge Enterprises is aimed to help drivers and owner operators be successful at their positions and businesses. With various locations set throughout Ontario, the day long workshops will be teaching advanced techniques in areas such as customer service, leadership, time management, safety, and business. The series will kick off on March 5th and we look forward to a learning day.

Nipigon River Bridge Update

MTO Hopeful of 2 Lanes Open by End of February

I

n a recent teleconference update with industry and media on the ongoing Nipigon River Bridge closure, Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca says he is confident the bridge will open to two lanes (one each way) by the end of February.

He said experts and engineers will soon decide on one of two options to reconnect the bridge followed by construction over the next few weeks. During this period, Del Duca warned there will be occasions – mostly during off-peak times and overnight – when the bridge will be fully closed temporarily.

He said industry will be notified in advance of full closures and additional restrictions – identifying OTA as a prime source for helping to keep the industry updated.

There is still no alternative road around the bridge other than to enter through the U.S. However, while carriers should plan for the additional restrictions in their operations as they are announced, Del Duca stressed the occasional full closures will not be excessive.

In the meantime – thanks to a temporary emergency contingency plan negotiated between OTA and border officials on both sides of the border – carriers also have the option to transport Canadian domestic goods in-transit through the U.S. using a limited data set at select ports of entry.

In early January, the newly constructed Nipigon River Bridge on Highway 11/17 in northern Ontario (located 100 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay) was closed due to mechanical issues resulting in Trans-Canada highway shutdown effectively closing travel by road between Eastern and Western Canada.

Mack Trucks Green-Lights Renewable Diesel Fuel for Use in Mack Engines

F

ollowing extensive truck and engine testing, Mack Trucks has signed off on the use of renewable diesel fuel in all Mack engines.

Renewable diesel fuel delivers performance similar to diesel refined from petroleum, but with several additional customer benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas and particulate emissions, as well as decreased maintenance costs.

“As the availability and customer requests for renewable diesel fuel increase, we worked to ensure its compatibility with our engines,” said Stu Russoli, Mack highway and powertrain products marketing manager.

“This approval gives Mack customers who seek to reduce their environmental footprint an additional choice when it comes to alternative fuels.”

Similar to conventional biodiesel, renewable diesel fuel is derived from biomass feedstocks, including animal fats and oils. However, unlike biodiesel, renewable diesel fuel is produced using a different

process and maintains physical properties and performance similar to petroleum diesel, meeting the same ASTM D975 standard.

Renewable diesel fuel offers several environmental benefits to customers, including reducing particulate matter. A life cycle analysis of renewable diesel fuel conducted by the California Air Resources Board also demonstrated reductions in greenhouse gases by 15 to 80 percent, depending on feedstock source used.

Customers can also save money with renewable diesel fuel, as it requires fewer maintenance costs compared to other alternative fuels.

The addition of renewable diesel fuel adds to Mack’s alternative fuel offerings. The Cummins-Westport ISX12 G natural gas-powered engine is currently available in Mack Pinnacle DayCab model. The Mack LR and Mack TerraPro cabover models also offer natural gas options with the availability of the RT Cummins-Westport ISL G engine.

PETERBILT INSTALLS ITS FIRST PRODUCTION

PACCAR MX-11 ENGINE

P

eterbilt’s first lightweight, fuel efficient PACCAR MX11 engine was installed recently in the company’s newest vocational truck, the Model 567 in a set-forward front axle (SFFA) configuration. The historic truck-andengine combination was presented to Knife River, who drove it off the assembly line at Peterbilt’s Denton, Texas manufacturing facility. The truck will be used in Knife River’s mixer operations throughout the Northwest U.S. The 10.8-liter PACCAR MX-11 engine became available for order through Peterbilt dealerships in November and production began this week. It has an output of up to 430 horsepower and 1,550 lb.-ft. of torque.

The PACCAR MX-11 engine has six inline cylinders and a double overhead camshaft design. PACCAR MX engines are the only commercial diesel engines to use Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) in both the engine block and cylinder head. CGI is approximately 20 percent lighter and 75 percent stronger than traditional gray iron. The PACCAR MX11 engine is designed to achieve an industry-leading B10 life of one million miles. It also utilizes a common rail fuel system with injection pressures of

Black Ice

I

f you haven’t had a lot of experience with black ice you may be a little concerned about how to handle it. There are a few things to be aware of with this particular hazard.

Black ice is clear water that has frozen on dark roadways, resulting in a hidden trap for drivers who can’t see it. It’s often found on bridges, below overpasses and in areas surrounded by trees where it tends to be colder. You can tell when you’ve hit black ice because your vehicle will become very quiet - you won’t hear the tires on the asphalt because they’re running on ice.

Black ice occurs most often when temperatures are near or below freezing and often forms when the temperature drops suddenly. Because road surfaces can freeze long before water freezes, drivers often think a shiny road surface indicates water, when it’s really ice. A thermometer will help you keep track of the temperature outside your truck. When you notice it dropping quickly, be aware that black ice might be forming.

Black ice can form even when it’s not raining or snowing. Condensation from dew on roadways will freeze when temperatures drop and form a thin layer of ice. Even in areas that aren’t accustomed to freezing temperatures, such as the Gulf Coast and Southeastern United States, a sudden blast of cold air from the north can quickly freeze and leave roadways very slick.

Be careful of black ice in the following areas when the temperature is around the freezing point: • Pavement that looks dry but appears darker in colour • Low-lying areas that may have water runoff from nearby trees or land • Bridges, which typically freeze first, and • Underpasses and other road areas that are shaded from the sun Watch the spray coming up from other vehicles. If it stops, there is ice ahead!

Here is what might be in your future: 1. Safety: Proximity sensors to warn you of hazards ahead on the road, automatic-braking, and park assist are just a few of the technological advancements being included in new vehicles.

2. Vehicle information: Digital messages can let you know about looming issues like worn brake pads, a brake light that is about to burn out, or other problems well beyond what most current vehicles can sense.

3. Location information: Based on your specific location, your car will be able to provide suggestions for local restaurants, attractions and hotels in the area.

4. Communication: You will be able to connect to other devices, including other cars, phones, computers, home appliances and thermostats.

5. Data tracking: Information about vehicle speed, usage and driving tendencies will be collected by

your vehicle. Among the uses for this information are usage-based insurance policies which set premiums based on driving behaviour.

While our cars might be able to do more for us, what will it mean for our privacy? Vehicles are increasingly capable of transmitting information wirelessly, leading to questions about privacy and security.

Many manufacturers are planning to collect this information but the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) believes that as the driver you should have the ability to control which information is shared and where it goes. Among other things, vehicles should be built with a clear menu so consumers can opt in to share the information they want to with the automaker or other service provider, such as a garage.

While some of these technologies may seem futuristic, there are currently data-collecting capabilities that car vendors use every time our car is serviced. Vehicles have been collecting limited repair data for years. The big change that is coming is two-fold: way more information will be collected, and it will be capable of being transmitted wirelessly to your vehicle manufacturer.

New report will lead to creation of national plan to combat distracted driving

T

he Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) and The Co-operators has released Distracted Driving in Canada: Making Progress, Taking Action, a report that provides a snapshot of activities underway in Canada to reduce distracted driving. Based on an environmental scan TIRF completed in partnership with Drop It and Drive (D.I.A.D.), it identifies the need for a national action plan to combat the problem and recommends the creation of a National Working Group on Distracted Driving that can work with a diverse set of stakeholders to develop such a strategy. In the months ahead, TIRF will take the lead on creating the working group, with the ongoing support of The Co-operators.

The report contains the results of an environmental scan and compiles statistics, recent initiatives and lessons learned about distracted driving strategies throughout the country, to establish a solid foundation upon which future activities may be planned and coordinated. It examines five main areas of focus: provincial and territorial government approaches to understanding and addressing the issue; enforcement strategies and outcomes; data collection and measurement; education and awareness campaigns; and legislation.

The report revealed that a primary emphasis was placed on improving data collection, and raising awareness and educating Canadians about distracted driving. In addition,

there was a high level of coordination of activities within individual jurisdictions. Nevertheless, the problem of distracted driving persists. In fact, the research revealed that distracted driving is a significant contributor to crashes that is comparable to impaired driving in several jurisdictions.

The report concluded that distracted driving is widely considered a top priority by provincial and territorial governments across the country, which have implemented a number of measures to begin to address the problem.

Researchers, non-profit organizations, industry professionals and media are equally engaged and working to strengthen efforts using complementary approaches.

Yet there is a gap in specific mechanisms to facilitate coordination across groups of stakeholders, and efficient exchange of information and outcomes at the national level.

TIRF will be working closely with D.I.A.D. in early 2016 to form the National Working Group and engage its members in the development of a national action plan.

Distracted Driving in Canada: Making Progress, Taking Action is based on information collected from a broad cross-section of stakeholders from all three levels of government, police departments, insurance companies, health care institutions, non-governmental, academic and RT community organizations.

David Bradley to step down as CTA/OTA President and CEO at end of 2017

A

fter more than 30 years in the trenches fighting on behalf of the trucking industry, David Bradley has announced he will be stepping aside as president and CEO of the Canadian Trucking Alliance and the Ontario Trucking Association at the end of 2017.

Bradley joined OTA as Director of Economics in 1985 after starting his career on Bay St. Six years later, at the age of 33, he was promoted to president of the OTA. In 1997 he developed a plan to rejuvenate the national trucking lobby which culminated in his taking on the additional responsibility of leading the newly formed Canadian Trucking Alliance.

Over the course of his career Bradley has steered both organizations through some of the industry’s most turbulent times – brought on by deregulation, an unrelenting focus on truck safety, free trade, numerous recessions, at least one major overhaul of the tax system, changes to weights and dimensions standards, labour unrest, a thickening of the Canada-US border, and environmental regulations, just to name a few. Through it all he has been a tireless defender of the industry and a strong advocate of responsible trucking and tough safety standards, demonstrated by his unrelenting support of regulatory initiatives such as mandatory activation of speed limiters and the upcoming requirement for electronic logging device. He’s been quoted over the years as saying he’s RT loved every minute of it.

The role – for me it has always been more than a job – has its challenges and requires certain sacrifices, but the rewards are enormous. Meritor Launches PlatinumShield III Coating for New and Remanufactured Brake Shoes

M

eritor announced at Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week ’16 (HDAW) that it has launched PlatinumShield III coating for aftermarket customers purchasing new and remanufactured Meritor brake shoes.

The third generation of the corrosion protectant centers on a refinement in the shoe preparation and coating process, which offers superior adhesion of the PlatinumShield III coating to the brake shoe’s metal surface. The result is a dramatic improvement in resistance to corrosion.

“With the new process, the coating protects the brake shoe for a significantly longer period of time on the road, maximizing vehicle uptime and fleet profitability,” said Pete Freeman, senior manager, Aftermarket for Meritor.

Meritor developed PlatinumShield coating to resist microabrasion caused by movement of the brake lining against the shoe table during normal use. Rust-jacking occurs when rust forms on bare shoe metal under the lining, causing the lining to lift and crack. Since its introduction in 2009, the PlatinumShield technology has protected more than 25 RT million new and remanufactured brake shoes.

Nail Fungus

N

ail fungus which is also referred to as tinea unguium is common condition that can affect both toenails and fingernails. However, the majority of the time nail fungus tends to grow in toenails.

In order to understand nail fungus, it is important to know exactly what fungus is. Fungi are microscopic organisms that do not require sunlight to survive. Fungi thrive in warm and moist places such as showers and swimming pools. For this reason, toenails are more often affected by fungi due to the fact that they are frequently in a dark, moist and warm environment such as shoes or work boots. In addition, toes usually have less blood flow which decreases the immune systems’ ability to detect and stop infections.

Although anyone can get a nail fungus infection, some populations are at an increased risk. First of all, older people are at more risk of developing nail fungus due to reduced blood flow to the lower extremity as well as slower growing nails. People who perspire heavily such as athletes or construction workers also are at a higher risk. Males seem to develop nail fungus more than females. The reason for this is still unclear. Finally, individuals with a weakened immune system or circulation problems are also at a higher risk.

A nail fungus infection usually starts as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail. As the infections progress, the fungus may cause the nail to discolour, thicken or become brittle. It can affect one or more nail at a time.

In severe cases the nail may separate from the nail bed causing pain.

In mild cases, no treatment is usually required. However, if pain is present or there is significant thickening of the nails, medication may be needed.

If self help and over the counter treatments are unsuccessful, it may be necessary to seek medical attention.

A doctor will generally be able to diagnose nail fungus by simply examining the nails. However, your doctor may scrape off a sample of the nail to be sent to a lab in order to identify the type of fungus causing the infection. Other micro organisms such as bacteria and yeast also cause nail infections. Thus, it is important to identify exactly what the cause of the infections is in order to determine the best course of treatment.

Oral antifungal medications such as Lamisil are often prescribed to patients with severe nail fungus infections.

These drugs are usually taken for six to twelve weeks depending on the severity of the infection. The goal of these medications is to grow new nail which is free of infection. Another form of treatment is medicated nail polish.

Studies have shown that using oral

antifungal mediation in conjunction with a medicated nail polish have the highest success rates. If all other forms of treatment fail, your doctor may recommend surgically removing the nail. A new nail will usually grow in its place however, this can take up to a year.

As I always say, prevention is the best medicine. Washing your hands and feet often and keeping your nails short and dry is by far the best way to avoid getting a fungal infection. In addition, wearing socks that wick away moisture is also good practice especially if you wear work boots on a daily basis. To add to this, changing socks often, especially if your feet tend to sweat a lot is also good practice. Finally, try to avoid going barefoot in public places such as showers and pools.

Keep these simple tips in mind and you will be well on your way to fungus free nails.
