elcome to the January 2012 edition of Road Today and at the very outset please accept heartiest best wishes for a happy, prosperous and safe new year. We look forward to work closely and effectively with all our readers, advertisers, patrons and industry colleagues through many of our qualitative products, events, services and initiatives during the year. At Road Today Media Group, we always strive to create needful awareness on different road safety elements concerning everyday life. During the year, stay tuned for more information in this publication about some exciting campaigns to be rolled out. Our flagship event – the 4th annual Road Today Truck Show will be organized at the Powerade Centre in Brampton on May 26th & 27th. So do mark your calendar for a fun filled and informative family weekend. As before, entry & parking to the show is always free. You will also be able to meet Team Road Today at many industry-recognized events across Canada. According to Ontario Trucking Association and Owner-Operator’s Business Association of Canada (OBAC), Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Bob Chiarelli, has agreed to reopen discussions surrounding the issue of age-based testing for commercial drivers aged 65 and older. Minister Chiarelli has indicated to proceed with a review of Commercial Driver Licence Renewal requirements for senior drivers in order to make them less onerous without compromising safety. He has asked his Parliamentary Assistant, Vic Dhillon (MPP,

Brampton West), to lead the review. We welcome this initiative and look forward to work closely with the industry stakeholders to address the issue. The recent Canada-US border agreement has been hailed as a historic achievement that takes meaningful steps to bringing the CanadaUS border into the 21st century. According to Canadian Trucking Alliance, the action plans of the agreement effectively balance security and trade imperatives while restoring a meaningful return on investment in the trusted trader programs. The agreement contains many positive measures for the trucking industry and we hope the industry will reap all the benefits in due course. Winter driving can be risky, so be ready and be safe. Keep in mind that proper vehicle maintenance, coupled with safe driving techniques, will help get you through the winter safely. You can reduce the chance of collision and help improve road safety by following basic safety tips like : giving yourself extra distance to stop, clearing the snow and ice off your vehicle, ensuring your wipers are in good working condition, checking weather conditions before hitting the roads, packing a winter driving emergency kit in your vehicle, etc. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Road Today Radio’ our weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial. Drive safe. Always remember: someone back home is waiting for you! Manan Gupta Editor

Motor Carriers Submit Infrastructure Priorities List to Feds

T

o help the federal government prioritize possible infrastructure investments in 2012, the Canadian Trucking Alliance has released a comprehensive list of roads, bridges and border crossings that the country’s motor carriers consider to be in need of improvements. The list identifies priority projects in all the regions of Canada that will increase safety and alleviate congestion on highways while helping to improve the flow of goods across the country. This year, the provincial trucking associations which make up the CTA made particular mention of the need for improved truck stop networks, noting there continues to be a lack of safe rest areas for truckers to park and get their required time-off. They would also like to see the expansion of major cross-country and southbound U.S. arteries.

Hino Achieves ISO 14001-2004 Registration Mr. Shin Nakamura, President of Hino Motors Canada, Ltd. has announced that its manufacturing facility, located in Woodstock, Ontario has recently achieved its registration under ISO 14001. Mr. Nakamura stated: “Hino’s global commitment is to safeguard and preserve the environment. This achievement is one important example of Hino’s resolve to honour its commitments.” Hino Motors Canada, a Toyota Group Company, assembles and distributes light and medium duty commercial trucks in Canada and is headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario with assembly operations in Woodstock, Ontario. Service is provided through its extensive coast-to-coast dealership network and is backed by its industry leading customer care protection program.

RCMP Arrest Two Individuals from Truck R Us for Fraud in connection with Transport Truck Odometer Tampering

A

fter a seven month investigation, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Federal Enforcement Section laid charges against a Brampton area man and woman who were allegedly involved in altering commercial transport truck odometers. Police allege Truck R Us Sales Inc., a Mississauga based company, purchased a large number of transport trucks from various locations in Canada and the United States, altered the odometer and resold the tractor trucks at a higher value to unknowing trucking companies throughout Canada, primarily Ontario. With assistance from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC), RCMP investigators were able to confirm that the odometers had been rolled back, some over 600,000 kilometers, and that these trucks were operating on roads and highways in North America. Consumers become victims of fraud when exact mileage and true dollar value is concealed during the sale of vehicles with altered odometers. “This type of criminal activity demonstrates a lack of regard for safety as well as undermines legitimate businesses,” says Inspector Todd Gilmore, Officer In Charge, RCMP Greater TorontoFederal Enforcement Section. Charged with Fraud and Conspiracy to Commit Fraud and Common Nuisance, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada are: - Balwant (Bill) SEKHON, 46 years old, Brampton, Ontario - Sarabjeet Kaur SHAHI, 39 years old, Brampton, Ontario The accused are scheduled to appear in Brampton Court on January 9th 2012 at 9am. www.roadtoday.com

ana Holding Corporation and Eaton Corporation have jointly announced that the marketing relationship between the two companies will end by the middle of 2012. Over the next six months, each company will be preparing to sell, market, and service customers independently of each other. Eaton will continue to provide field services and support for all Eaton and Dana products through the middle of 2012 under the Roadranger brand, after which Dana will have the support systems in place to effectively service and support its customers independently. Both companies have committed to make this transition a seamless transition. “Going to market independently will afford Dana greater opportunity to communicate with customers directly and to better understand their needs,” said Wallace. “This closer, direct relationship with customers will, in turn, provide the foundation for innovation and technology in Dana’s core axle, driveshaft, wheel end, and tire management systems.” “Eaton intends to continue operating the Roadranger marketing organization as we have in the past – focused exclusively on serving our customers,” said Sinden. “We will continue to collaborate with our OEM customers, Dana and other powertrain providers on virtually integrated powertrain systems for the North American commercial vehicle marketplace.” For additional information throughout the transition process customers are encouraged to access www.Roadranger. com/alliance or www.Dana.com/CV. Rising Driver Turnover Rate Makes Driver Comfort Critical for Retention and Recruitment

T

ick, tick, tick. That’s the sound of driver turnover rates ticking upward, making driver comfort especially critical in fleet efforts to retain and recruit drivers. The growing driver shortage is estimated by some industry analysts to reach several hundred thousand. It can cost thousands of dollars to recruit a new driver to replace a driver who leaves. “We don’t expect that turnover number to abate anytime soon,” said Reid Nabarrete, Kenworth assistant general manager for marketing and sales. “As a result, driver comfort is becoming an increasingly critical dynamic in both driver retention and recruitment. It’s imperative for fleets to operate the right quality equipment and provide important amenities in their tractors to secure and keep drivers.” So, where does comfort start? “Since drivers spend most of their time at the wheel, driver comfort really begins with seats,” Nabarrete said. The Kenworth T660 and Kenworth T700, both aerodynamic models offer numerous seat choices, including the Kenworth Air Cushion Premium Plus. For those fleets running sleeper trucks, a high-quality, comfortable mattress is important for rest periods. “Kenworth’s premium pocket innerspring mattress is standard on lower bunks in our Class 8 models equipped with sleepers,” said Nabarrete. Independent high-tensile wire coils in a cylindrical spring are wrapped in highdensity fabric to maximize wear strength and minimize friction and noise. Each coil ROAD TODAY JANUARY 2012

forms an individual pocket, which absorbs weight and does not distribute the load to other coils. This enables the mattress to provide even support, a higher comfort level, reduced motion and increased longevity. For fleets running regional hauler or vocational applications, Nabarrete recommends spec’ing the Kenworth Extended Day Cab, which further enhances comfort with an additional six inches of length and five inches of cab height compared to Kenworth’s traditional day cab. Ergonomics also plays an important part of the driver comfort equation. In the cab, the optional and ergonomic Kenworth SmartWheel provides engine brake, cruise, and light controls at the driver’s fingertips on the steering wheel. Kenworth also offers an easily adjustable, telescoping tilt steering column as an option. Since the Kenworth cab design does not require a doghouse for the engine, the driver receives room for a more ergonomic foot placement when running in cruise control. For easy access and viewing, the Kenworth dash features large and chrome bezels, LED back-lighting in the face plate and pointers, and dash rocker switches with LED indicator lights. The PACCAR MX achieves the noise reduction through use of compacted graphite iron (CGI) to increase stiffness of the cylinder block and head, combustion optimization that helps minimize excessive combustion noise, and the cam-in-block and rear gear train which reduce torsional vibrations in the engine. The PC-based, in-dash NavPlus system includes true truck-specific navigation, vehicle data, hands-free phoning, audio 20

controls, camera inputs, roadside assistance, and optional Internet access. NavPlus is pre-programmed with the 1-800-KWASSIST number for one-touch access in the event of a roadside incident, offering driver peace of mind. The PACCAR proprietary navigation and business technology system, is standard on Kenworth trucks with all premium interior trim offerings and on Kenworth diesel-electric hybrid vehicles. The system is available as an optional upgrade with all other Kenworth interior trim packages. www.roadtoday.com

ROAD TODAY JANUARY 2012

CSA is a year old. What has it really done for us?

Kevin Snobel is a well experienced Logistics Executive with a strong Operations background, and a commitment to Safety and Compliance. He possesses diverse experience in Ground, Air and Ocean Transportation and has a consistent track record of translating a company’s business plan into a profitable enterprise. Kevin can be reached at 647-225-1367 or kevins@sympatico.ca

T

he CSA learning curve has been steep in 2011 and in 2012 it will become steeper. Drivers who are still with us today, for the most part, have a good chance of being here this time next year. Carriers however may not be so fortunate since CSA has only graded 15% of the industry. Even the small carriers are being audited now, especially in Canada. There are still plenty of carriers with extremely high SMS numbers that will find 2012 financially and legally very difficult but it will be because of their own undoing. Drivers on the other hand should have a better year ahead unless they are working for some of these leftover outlaw carriers who are so arrogant as to believe they are above CSA regulations. But how about these CSA tested drivers who are still around. The number one concern for about a third of the carriers out there today is the

TRUCK SALES A Volvo Group Company

belief that a driver shortage has begun. Carriers that are experiencing tight driver pools are growing every day. At some point in time a bidding war for drivers will emerge. The best drivers will be sucked out of the driving pool by the highest bidder when the reality of a shortage finally sinks in. The FMCSA has stated they will make it more difficult for drivers to get jobs in 2012 unless they have a clean PSP. That is going to turn the industry thinking upside down as driver pools shrink. Drivers who have marks on their PSP will have to stay put with their present company, if they want to continue to drive. For the drivers who are well prepared this will be a good thing. For those who do not know how to take advantage of the situation, the situation will take advantage of them. The 2012 CSA qualified driver will not be a job hopping driver! Number one, it is not the best method of earning the most money. Number two, everytime a driver changes jobs they lose money no matter how they think

about it. Just missing a paycheque for two weeks will cause a driver to have to work a solid year to make up for it. A year wasted. Three, everytime a driver leaves a carrier you also leave the routes that you have learned over time. Routes that you became efficient in running. All the short cuts, all the places you know to avoid during high traffic times have been lost and you have to learn that all over again. It costs drivers and carriers more money a year than we care to think about, or for that matter, comprehend. A driver quitting a job is in the wrong business. If fact, carriers should get together and ban drivers who switch carriers more than two times in a year. That gives a driver one chance a year in case of an emergency plus overall it would save millions of dollars a year for drivers and carriers, in training and recruiting costs alone. It would be great if every company out there, ensured drivers had a mandatory paid vacation every six months so they don’t burn out on the road.

Canadian Truckers Say Canada-US Border Agreement Delivers

T

he Canadian Trucking Alliance is hailing Canada-US border agreement announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and US President Barack Obama as a historic achievement that takes meaningful steps to bringing the Canada-US border into the 21st century. Trucks are the major mode of transborder freight transport between the world’s largest bilateral trading partners. “The leaders and the governments of both great nations are to be commended. The action plans effectively balance security and trade imperatives while restoring a meaningful return on investment in the trusted trader programs and creating the opportunity for a more efficient and productive border,” said David Bradley, president of the 4,500member company trucking alliance. Over the past several months, CTA consulted extensively with both agencies responsible for drafting the Action Plan -- the Beyond the Border Working Group and the Canada–US Regulatory Cooperation Council – proposing a number of doable measures the Alliance felt would improve trade facilitation and reduce unnecessary regulatory barriers. “Of all the announcements made, perhaps the greatest bang for our buck in the Action Plan is the harmoniza-

tion between Canada and the U.S. on the data requirements for in transit goods movement which temporarily travel through one of the two countries,” said Bradley. Canada’s rules allow the movement of goods in-transit by a US carrier. But after post-Sept. 11 security rules were implemented, the U.S. essentially killed Canadian carriers’ ability to transport domestic loads through the U.S. by requiring full customs documentation. Restoring carriers’ ability to move in-transit means more efficient trade, lower costs and faster truck transit times for Canadian carriers moving domestic goods through the U.S. To restore competitive balance, the U.S. government has effectively agreed to harmonize its current rules with Canada. The alternative would have been for Canada to mirror the U.S. policy, putting an end to the practice and effectively eliminating the efficiencies altogether. Among the many positive measures for the trucking industry contained in the announcement are as follows: s Mutual Recognition of Trusted Trader Programs -- The Alliance also applauds the Perimeter Action Plan’s mutual recognition of the two main “trusted trader” risk assessment programs -- the U.S. Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) and the Canada Border Services Agency’s’ Partners In Protection (PIP). CTA had been urging greater flexibility in how each program de-

Leaders’ announcement is historic, helps create 21st century border

termines carrier and shipper access to FAST lanes into Canada. Currently, companies must apply to both programs separately, despite the fact that the information required is identical. s FAST Cards -- Governments will examine ways to allow FAST cards to meet requirements of other security programs, involving CBSA, CBP and other government agencies. s Pre-Inspection -- Another intriguing border provision could reduce the number of customs inspections for truck freight moving across the Canada-U.S. border. A pilot slated for launch at the Port of Montreal will introduce an ‘inspect once, accept twice’ concept, where freight arriving at the North American border will only be inspected by one Customs agency but will be accepted by both countries. s Pre-Clearance -- USCBP will implement a preclearance pilot at a land border by Sept. 2012, quite possibly the Peace Bridge, where infrastructure limitations contribute to traffic congestion. Facilities at the Peace Bridge would allow trucks to be precleared on the Canadian side of the border by CBP prior to entering the U.S.

CTA has historically cautioned against any initiative that would see trucks stopping twice where currently there is only one stop, however the Alliance looks forward to working with governments and local port officials on this initiative to ensure optimum efficiencies are achieved. s Border Crossing Fees -- Governments have committed to conduct an inventory and assessment that examines the rationale and impact for the multitude of border crossing fees, including such irritants as the APHIS fees. s RFID -- Border infrastructure means more than just building roads and bridges. CTA is pleased that funding has been identified for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and anticipates that under the review of trusted trader facilities it could lead to expansion of FAST lanes and RFID technology for commercial lanes. s Wood Packaging Material -- The action plan commits to finding ways to ensure that inspection of pallets and other packaging materials is done away from the border and does not disrupt border operations.

Truckers Ask Ontario Government to Keep Eyes on the Road

O

ntario is certainly likely to face some economic challenges in the coming months, which, says the Ontario Trucking Association, is all the more reason for the government to stay the course it paved through the recession. In a pre-budget submission to the Ontario Standing Committee on Finance, OTA vice president Stephen Laskowski commended several provincial initiatives supported by the trucking industry. But even as some of the challenges ahead of the 2012 provincial budget appear daunting, Laskowski stressed that this is no time for government to waver in its commitment to successful programs. The introduction of the HST eliminated the unfair and antiquated tax system which saw Ontario trucking companies pay provincial sales tax on virtually all business inputs and thereby placing them at a competitive disadvantage with carriers from jurisdictions that either exempt trucking equipment from sales taxes or already had a harmonized system. OTA believes the province has done a good job of maintaining investment in highway and bridge infrastructure despite the financial hurdles it faced in recent years. The association urged the government to prioritize projects that ensure the viability of key trade routes to domestic and international markets, such as the Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) process, which aims to build a second bridge at the congested Windsor-Detroit trade Gateway.

Why Your Transportation Company Should Give a Hoot About Social Media

I

t wasn’t too long ago that social media was something my kids did instead of doing their homework. It was something that they used to gossip, watch videos of cats playing the piano and to let everybody know what they had for breakfast. While some are ahead of the curve, it is only recently that many transportation companies are waking up to the idea that social media more than just a fad. Social Media Isn’t Just for Kids Anymore Over the past few years, social media has revolutionized the way we communicate. It has significant implications in the way we live play... and work. If you’re still not convinced,

here is some food for thought: According to a survey by the Worldcom Public Relations Group, an estimated 83% of companies are using social media for marketing and sales.1 In addition to this, the number of people on social media networks is truly staggering: • Almost 700 million people are on Facebook2 • Approximately 200 million are on Twitter3 • 101 million people use LinkedIn4 Turning Marketing and Communications Inside-Out Social media will continue to evolve and is most definitely not a passing fancy. Your transportation business should have social media on your radar because it is turning the way we’ve traditionally done marketing, communications and sales on its head. Here’s how: 1. The ‘sell’ is secondary

Do you ever call up a potential business partner or client just to touch base, introduce yourself or catch up over a drink or a meal? Of course, while making money or some other kind of business interest is usually the

ultimate motivator in these meetings, it isn’t typically the focus of your discussion. Social media is not unlike this kind of networking: It’s about building relationships and trust as a first step before moving on to the ‘sell.’ It’s also about getting yourself and your company known so that you are the first choice when an opportunity or need arises from the client. 2. Collaboration is the Key In social media, traditional one-to-many bullhorn marketing is being eclipsed by marketing that is ‘many-to-many.’ With social media, your customers, business partners, colleagues and even your competitors are the creators of YOUR content:

better to be part of the conversation? 3. Real-Time, Any Time Social media can be a great tool to conduct market research. It lets you watch trends in the industry, keep tabs on what your competitors are doing and keep your finger on the pulse of what matters to your clients as well as what they like and don’t like about your products and services…all in real-time. People can access content, do business, and carry out transactions any time from their office, home, or waiting in line at the post office from their mobile device. This is an opportunity to be able to service customer demands on an as-needed

basis but may also present some challenges as our businesses play catch-up with our technology and systems If your transportation company doesn’t use social media yet, now is the time to think about getting up-tospeed. It’s high time the transportation sector gives a hoot about the social media revolution. 1.

They can now use the internet to repost and comment on anything you do or say, online or offline. One of the biggest barriers keeping businesses away from social media is a fear that people “will say bad things” about them. While this concern is justified, burying your head in the sand by avoiding social media altogether is not the best answer because people will talk about you whether you are online or not. Isn’t 29

hat the heck is a QR Code? If that is your response to the title of this article then it is time to read on about the fastest growing technology in marketing. The QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a small black and white abstract looking box that holds information that would be of interest to users. The user uses a scanner, more likely an app on their phone or device that they point at the code box and when scanned are redirected to a web page, informational text, or video. Now this technology has been around a long time and has been used in almost every large manufacturing company in the country to scan and sort items for production and storage. With the changes in cell phone technology and the creation of apps for phones the applications are now accessible to the general public therefore allowing businesses a new way to market their wares. Now before you go having all kinds of codes created remember there has to be a use for them, they have to point to something such as your website. Creating the code is not too difficult for someone experienced with web based language. The QR code is usually put on print material or signage to give an interactive element to the display. To give an example a person would point their phone with the scanner open at the black and white box, the scanner would read the code and open up the web page or information set into the

code. So how would you use this for recruiting lets say? Lets assume you have put an ad in a magazine or you are doing a trade show and have signage up about your company. You would place the QR code in your ad or on the sign in

plain view for people to see. If you’re talking to the general public or clients once you have them interested in your business you can have them go right to your web page or other important information by scanning the code right there while standing in the same spot. This way you can capture their interest even more and answer any questions they may have. You may even go a step further and have your application set up on a QR Code so that code is scanned, filled out immediately, and sent back to the office for processing immediately instead of waiting until you return to the office trying to remember all the discussions you had by memory. This technology helps in many ways at shows especially shows where you want that interactivity but don’t have hydro or power readily available. You could have the QR code displayed and when scanned by the phone it would take the user to your

unique video or web page anywhere that cell phone coverage is available. There are many possibilities for this technology for those who wish to use it. The important part to think about with QR codes is that the information coded should be of interest to your potential clients. Creating codes for the sake of creating codes will not make them anymore useful. For instance don’t create a code to show a video of you answering questions that you can answer in talking with your client. You can answer those right there so you want the video or web page to be an additional level of information that is best shown on the web or video. In marketing, many companies are using QR Codes to offer special discounts, promotional specials and more. If someone scans the code and is redirected to your website and fills out the form with an email address they can now be sent a special gift for filling out the form via email once the information is sent and that is done immediately. So the best place to start with QR codes is to download the free scanner app and when you see a QR code scan it to see how different companies are using them. I have seen them used everywhere from business cards to movie information and more. Once you have an idea how they can be used see where it best fits in your marketing and recruiting plans. You can check out one I have by scanning the one on this page. Good luck with the marketing efforts.

LEAVE A LANE. IT 'S THE LAW.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

Same service A husband visited a marriage counsellor and said, “When we were first married, I would come home from the office, my wife would bring my slippers and our cute little dog would run around barking. Now after 10 years, it’s all different. I come home, the dog brings the slippers and my wife runs around barking.” “Why complain?” said the counsellor, “You’re still getting the same service.” Getting divorced A woman walks into a lawyer’s office and asks, “Is it true that if I get divorced, I’m entitled to half of my husband’s possessions?” “In most cases,” answers the lawyer, “it is true. Are you getting a divorce?” “Not yet,” the woman replies. “First, I’ve got to get married.” Poor girls A man was watching FTV when suddenly his son came into the room. To conceal his embarrassment, he said: ‘Poor girls, they don’t even have enough money to buy clothes. The son replied: “If you want to see some girls even more poor than them, I have a CD dad”. Driving expert The car sped off the highway, went through the guardrail, rolled down a cliff, bounced off a tree and finally shuddered to a stop. A passing motorist, who had witnessed the entire accident, helped the miraculously unharmed driver out of the wreck. “Good Lord, mister,” he gasped, “Are you drunk?” “Of course,” said the man, brushing the dirt from his suit. “What do you think I am-a stunt driver?”

Don’t let the bed bugs bite! Dr Christopher H. Singh Chiropractor, runs Trans Canada Chiropractic at 230 Truck Stop in Woodstock, Ont. He can be reached at 519-421-2024 E-mail: chris_singh@sympatico.ca

ed bugs are small parasitic insects that feed on the blood of warm blooded animals such as humans. The name bed bug was derived from the fact that they like to live in areas where people sleep. Generally, bedbugs are reddish brown, oval and flat, and approximately the size of an apple seed. For the most part, bed bugs are nocturnal. During the day time, they will hide in cracks and crevices of beds, headboards and bed frames. They can also be found under peeling paint, loose wallpaper, under carpeting near baseboards. Fortunately, they have been eradicated from most developed countries since the 1940’s. However, there has been an increase in their prevalence since the early 1990’s. The reason for this increase is not completely understood however, it is believed to be related to increased international travel, changes in pest control practices and insecticide resistance. The symptoms of bedbug bites can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from other common insect bites. In most cases, bedbug bites present as

a red, itchy spot located on the face, neck, arms and/or hands. Often times, the bites are arranged in a cluster or line. Some people may experience an allergic reaction which can include severe itching, blisters or hives. The

symptoms of bedbug’s bites usually subside on their own within two weeks. Oral antihistamines and hydrocortisone creams may help to speed up recovery. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction or the symptoms persistent. Many people believe that bedbugs are attracted to dirty or unhygienic environments however, this is not the case. It is important to note that the presence of bed bugs is not a reflection of the cleanliness of their environment. All that is required for a bedbug infestation is a warm host and sufficient hiding places. If you suspect the presence of

bedbugs in your home or bunk of your truck, carefully inspect your bed and surrounding area. Make sure to look in all the small nooks and crannies as they like to hide. Also, look for dark specks along mattress seams which may be bedbug excrement. Bedbug exoskeletons may also be present as they molt a few times before becoming adults. These exoskeletons are light brown in color. Once the presence of bedbugs has been confirmed, it is important to take the necessary steps in order to eliminate them. This can be a difficult task because they are very good at hiding. A good place to start is to do a thorough vacuuming of the infested area. Next, washing all of your clothing in hot water can kill bedbugs. Similarly, placing clothing in a clothes dryer under high heat for 20 minutes will kill bedbugs and their eggs. Finally, if all else fails, contact a professional exterminator. As you can see, bedbugs are more of a nuisance rather than a serious medical condition. However, left unchecked, they can lead to a significant problem. Until next month, drive safely and don’t let those bed bugs bite!
