elcome to the July 2011 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the award-winning magazine for the changing trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. The truck show season is in full swing. Congrats to the show management at Stirling Truck Show for organizing another successful event. Coming up next is the Fergus Truck Show. So do mark your calendar for the July 22nd weekend. Visit with your families and please do not forget to meet team Road Today at Booth M 10. With the start of summer and end of school, we would like to remind pedestrians and drivers of the need to be vigilant, in order to prevent a tragedy. During this time of year, with young children out from school and playing outdoors, drivers and pedestrians alike are reminded that road safety is a shared responsibility. Summer also brings increased traffic to our roads and highways. We need to slow down, look around, signal our intentions and always be trying to identify anything that could be a potential hazard while we travel. Drivers are reminded that they need to give their full attention to driving safely and obeying the rules of the road. Pedestrians are reminded that their safety is in their hands. They need to be fully aware, at all times, of the movement of vehicles in their
vicinity. Remember, road safety is everyone’s responsibility, but it starts with you. Toronto’s Board of Trade says gridlock is now the greatest threat to economic prosperity in the region and wants provincial parties to address the issue in the upcoming election campaign. A board of trade report says infrastructure under funding is creating a gridlock problem that is costing the region $6 billion annually, and rising. We hope the decision makers look at this serious problem of gridlock and do take constructive measures to improve the flow of goods and people through out the region. Starting July 1, drivers can tow recreational vehicles (RVs) if they have a full class G licence. This will make it easier for Ontarians to travel this summer and save RV owners about $200 in initial licence costs. Until now, Ontario drivers have needed a class A licence to tow RVs that weigh more than 4,600 kg. With this change, Ontarians can tow and operate RVs with a full class G licence. If you want to reach the Road Today team through social media, we are readily available on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. And don’t forget to tune in to our award winning weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial or listen online at www. goodmorningtoday.ca Drive safe. Always remember: someone back home is waiting for you! See you at the truck shows!

Volvo Trucks Leads the Charge for Industrial Energy Savings
V
olvo Trucks’ New River Valley (NRV) manufacturing plant in Dublin, Va. reduced its energy intensity by nearly 30 percent in just one year, making it the first company to meet a 10year challenge set by the U.S. Department of Energy. T h e Department of Energy (DOE) launched the Save Energy Now LEADER Program in Oct. 2009 as a challenge to the U.S. industrial sector. Volvo Trucks in North America and 31 other major companies pledged to reduce their intensity of energy per unit of production by 25 percent over a decade. The plant reduced its MMbtu per truck (the DOE metric for energy intensity) from 79.64 in 2009 to 60.42 in 2010 – a reduction of 29.6 percent. Every Volvo truck sold in North America is assembled in the U.S. at the NRV plant. Since introducing No Regen SCR aftertreatment technology to meet current EPA standards,Volvo Trucks has improved the fuel efficiency of its trucks by up to 8 percent or more, with near-zero regulated emissions. Customer response to these trucks, fully certified to the EPA 2010 emissions standards, has been extremely positive, driving an increase in demand. To reach the aggressive energy reduction goals, Volvo Trucks

took advantage of DOE assessments, established a dedicated energy team at the NRV plant, and worked to make energy savings part of the employee mindset. A detailed energy map was developed, clarifying where and how energy was being used. Team members agreed to pursue many small energ y-saving tactics and also to attack the biggest energyconsuming process: the paint operation. T h e e n e r g y team worked closely with paint shop employees to find ways to make energyintensive processes more efficient, including optimizing stop and start times. Other company-wide efforts include the use of a building automation system to control building temperatures and turn off lighting, a passive solar wall and photovoltaic solar panels. Skylights, new light fixtures (including LED), infrared heaters and solar water heaters were installed. As cost savings were found, those funds were re-invested in other energy reduction strategies. The New River Valley plant’s improvements haven’t gone unnoticed by customers, who often visit Volvo to see production first-hand, learn about innovations, and test-drive trucks.

OPP RELEASE RESULTS OF “OPERATION CORRIDOR” OPP Report Number of Charges Down from Last Year

ith Operation Corridor 2011 wrapping up on June 15, 2011, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has released the results of this 24-hour initiative that targeted aggressive commercial drivers and unsafe commercial vehicles. speed-limiter charges), 123 equipment charges were laid and 50 commercial vehicles were taken out of service due to equipment issues or hours of service violations by OPP officers. In comparison, last year during Operation Corridor (2010), 1,769 commercial vehicles were stopped and a total of 433 charges were laid for various Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act offences. Of those charges, 159 of them were for speeding. The OPP is cautiously optimistic that with half the number of speeding charges being laid during this year’s campaign, that commercial vehicle drivers are making an effort to curb aggressive driving behaviour. Operation Corridor is one of six provincial and national traffic safety strategies supported by the OPP’s award-winning Provincial Traffic Safety Program. The program addresses highrisk behaviours involving occupant restraint, impaired driving, aggressive driving and distracted driving. Operation Corridor is an annual border-to-border highway safety initiative that focuses on high visibility, enforcement and education opportunities on highways and roads. The 24-hour initiative ran from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14 to 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday June 15, 2011

The wireless technology also eliminates the need to install and maintain the additional wiring and trailer plugs required to connect sensors to the cab readout in typical hardwired systems. The system’s Smart Sensors, available for both air-ride and mechanical suspensions, can be installed without any special tools or skills. Using two common AA batteries in each sensor, typical battery life is 8-12 months in normal use. The next-generation Smart Scale system is available immediately for both air-ride and mechanical suspensions through the company’s website, www.TruckWeight.com, or by calling 877-7577888.

Federal Budget: The Sequel
CTA hoping trucking industry gets lion’s share of $48 million for development of green transportation regulations and initiatives
N
CTA speculates that measure might also include incentives for “next generation” clean engine technologies and fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel electric hybrids. Given their current high cost, CTA contends that significant financial incentives are required if Canada is to develop and market such technology. The budget also contained funding announcements on a number of transportation infrastructure projects including: • $228 million over three years to fund much-needed repairs and maintenance of the Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges in Montreal. • $150 million over five years was allocated to the construction of an all-season road between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk. • $1 billion to fund up to 50% of new international crossing at Windsor-Detroit • Refurbishment of Saint John Harbour Bridge • Creating new capacity at Ridley Terminals in Prince Rupert • $150 million for inter-provincial and international crossings in Eastern Canada The Red Tape Reduction Commission received some ink in the budget. While no trucking-specific measures were revealed, the government stated that in future regulators will be required to take particular caution, using a “small business lens,” in applying new regulations to small business.
ot surprisingly, the Harper government’s post-election budget was for the most part a reintroduction of the measures previously announced in the March budget speech. From a trucking perspective, the potentially most significant measure re-announced was the $48 million dollar commitment to develop GHG transportation sector regulations and next generation clean transportation initiatives. The budget did not provide details of how the funds would be allocated, or how they would be divided amongst the modes. However, David Bradley, CEO of the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) which represents over 4,500 companies through the provincial trucking associations, said his members “are looking forward to learning how the environmental technology funds will be invested and are hopeful that the lion’s share will go to a program to stimulate investment in currently available and proven fuel economy technologies for existing and new tractors and trailers.” “CTA has been working with Transport Canada, Environment Canada and Natural Resources Canada over the last few years on a voluntary shared investment initiative calledenviroTruck, which is designed to supplement and complement the government’s proposed fuel economy/GHG reduction standards for heavy trucks,” he said. “The pay-back from such a program would be increased GHG reduction compared to what would be achievable through the proposed regulation on its own and the environmental benefits would accrue to Canadians at an accelerated pace.”

New study finds patchwork of licence requirements for older drivers A
Challenges loom as first of the baby boomers turn 65 this year
national study shows that licensing polices for older drivers, which until now have not been fully documented, vary widely in Canada. Requirements for licence renewal, reporting practices, appeals processes and options for restricted licences largely depend on where someone lives, according to the researchers, Anita Myers from the University of Waterloo, Brenda Vrkljan from McMaster University and Shawn Marshall from the University of Ottawa. The study, funded by the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation and Transport Canada, found little agreement between the provinces and territories on the best ways to identify and regulate older drivers who may present a risk to themselves and other road users. 2011, the Canadian Year of Road Safety, also marks the year Canadian boomers begin turning 65. Transport Canada data shows that in 2009 there were 3.25-million licensed drivers aged 65 and older, 14 per cent of the total driving population. The volume of senior drivers is expected to more than double in the next decade. As drivers age, they are more likely to develop vision and other health problems that may compromise driving safety. In some provinces, but not all, drivers are subjected to medical review once they turn 70, 75 or 80. Mass screening, however, is costly and apart from in-person renewal, has shown minimal impact on fatalities. Experts agree that the focus should be on identifying potentially medically-at-risk drivers regardless of age and thoroughly
assessing each person’s capabilities for continued safe driving. In most provinces, physicians are required to report patients they suspect are medically unfit to drive. This puts enormous pressureon doctors who have increasing numbers of older patients with chronic conditions and lack valid tools to determine fitness-to-drive. Access to driver assessment centres, wait times and costs to drivers themselves also vary widely from province to province, according to the study. For many seniors, driving is crucial for maintaining mobility and freedom. Surveys show that most would rather have restricted licences (such as no night or highway driving) rather than lose their driving privileges altogether. Licensing authorities are under pressure to expand restricted licences for older drivers, comparable to graduated licences for novice drivers. Prior to the study, however, it was unclear which options were available across the country or how authorities monitor driver compliance with license restrictions. To make this information widely available, the Canadian researchers partnered with the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety to produce a comprehensive website on current practices and promising approaches regarding medically at-risk and older drivers. The site provides one-stop shopping for professionals and the general public looking for information on licensing regulations and resources. For more information on the study, visit www.Candrive.ca.

MICHELIN INTRODUCES NEW XZA3®+ EVERTREAD STEER TIRE, GUARANTEES 30 PERCENT MORE MILES
T
rucking fleets and owner-operators who want more miles out of their steer tires while still saving fuel can now take advantage of the new MICHELIN XZA3+ EVERTREAD steer tire. The EPA SmartWay verified tire delivers fuel savings the industry has come to expect from Michelin’s line of steer tires while also guaranteeing 30 percent more miles than the competition. “Michelin is always looking to build on our existing industryleading products and bring to market new technologies that deliver the next level of performance without compromise,” said Ted Becker, vice president of marketing, Michelin Americas Truck Tires. “The XZA3+ EVERTREAD tire, with its use of Michelin’s new patent pending Dual Compound Tread, is proof of this idea. In fact, Michelin is so confident in the XZA3+ EVERTREAD tire that we guarantee fleet and owner-operators will get more road than competitive tires.” The new steer tire is guaranteed to last at least 30 percent longer than the competition in long-haul applications. The XZA3+ EVERTREAD tire is able to deliver significantly longer wear life due to Michelin’s new generation of Co-Ex Technology, the patent pending Dual Compound Tread. This technology allows tire designers to utilize multiple rubber compounds at different places in the tread. One compound is specifically engineered to control tread stiffness and stress to reduce irregular wear, delivering unrivaled tread life without compromising other
characteristics. Another compound delivers ultra fuel-efficiency and keeps the tire’s operating temperatures low, guarding the casing for retreading. The tire also features a three-retread limited warranty. This warranty further demonstrates the advantage of the Dual Compound Tread, as well as the robust casing integrity through the enhanced inner liner, bead area and rectangular bead bundle. The XZA3+ EVERTREAD tire is now available in North America in four G-load range sizes: 11R22.5, 275/80R22.5, 11R24.5 and 275/80R24.5; as well as two H-load range sizes: 11R22.5 and 275/80R22.5.

Western Star Introduces Two New Suspension Options
W
estern Star Truck Sales has announced two new suspension options available for its various truck models and configurations. The first - a Neway 60,000 pound capacity AD 260 Tandem air suspension system - is available for all Western Star truck models utilizing Dana D60-190 axles, and contributes to the vehicles’ road-holding and handling and positive axle alignment, virtually eliminating tire hop and providing superior traction. The highest capacity air suspension in the industry, the Neway system also provides predictable roll stiffness for high center of gravity loads particularly important for front and rear discharge mixers. In addition to the Neway system, the 40,000-pound TufTrac All Wheel Drive (AWD) high-performance vocational suspension is also available as an option for the Western Star 4800 with 40,000-pound axles. Specifically designed for on- and off-road high articulation operations where it’s important to navigate bumps, ridges and washboard without bottoming out, the 40,000-pound TufTrac mounting is a lighter, more affordable alternative than the 46,000-pound option. Additional benefits of the 40,000-pound TufTrac include a uniform load over each wheel, maximum traction and a smooth and quiet ride. Both the Neway AD 260 Tandem and 40,000-pound TufTrac suspensions are now available to order.

Angela Splinter named Executive Director of CTHRC A
ngela Splinter has been named the new Executive Director of the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) following a national search by the organization’s Board of Directors. Splinter has extensive experience in human resources management, particularly in the area of sector council programming. She recently served as the Electricity Sector Council’s Director – Projects and Development following six years as a management consultant for councils serving the electricity, mining, automotive repair and contact centre industries. In that time, she worked on projects including national occupational standards, certification and training, labour market information and foreign credentials recognition. “We are confident that Angela Splinter has the skills to build on the solid foundation established under Linda Gauthier’s leadership,” said CTHRC Board Chair Gord Peddle, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Atlantica Diversified Transportation Systems. “By finding an Executive Director with her broad experience, we enjoy the added benefit of a fresh outlook for our programs, services and business practices.” “With half a million workers, the trucking industry continues to play a key role in the Canadian economy. But it faces numerous human resources challenges that threaten the bottom line of every business,” Splinter noted, referring to examples such as shortages of qualified workers. “I am thrilled to join the CTHRC team that knows the trucking industry and is committed to addressing these HR needs.” Splinter recently attended the Council’s Board of Directors’ Meeting and Annual General Meeting, where she had a chance to meet with several leading industry representatives. In the coming months, she plans to focus her attention on ensuring that the needs of industry stakeholders continue to be met by developing a business plan that will help make the Council’s new strategic direction a reality.
Western Star Offers BluetoothEnabled Radio for Full Product Line
W
estern Star Truck Sales has announced that a Bluetoothenabled radio is now available as an option for its full product line, including the Western Star 4700, 4800, 4900 and 6900 truck models. Mounted in the cab’s overhead console, the Bluetooth technology enables drivers to talk on cell phones hands-free. Operating through the cab speaker system, the technology mutes the radio when the driver places or receives a call, helping drivers not only keep their eyes on the road, but also stay in compliance with handfree cell phone laws. Navigation systems with Bluetooth capability will also work with this new system. Similar to the phone, the radio is muted when the navigation system announces a driver’s next turn. “Safety is one of our top priorities, and the availability of Bluetooth will not only benefit the drivers, but help keep the roads safer for everyone traveling,” said Ann Demitruk, director of marketing, Western Star. The new Bluetooth-enabled system comes standard with Sirius XM Radio and is available to order now for all Western Star truck models.

OTA Welcomes Budget Announcement Reaffirming Commitment of $1 billion for New Windsor-Detroit Crossing
Truck Wash Discount for Petro-Pass Holders 8 - 100 ft. SERVICE BAYS
T
he federal budget was welcomed by the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) for its recommitment to the Windsor-Detroit crossing. “The $1 billion re-commitment announcement in the budget was not surprising but it was still good news,” said OTA Senior VP Stephen Laskowski. The budget allocated $1 billion for up to 50% of the cost to construct the bridge. With the Michigan legislature continuing to move closer to introduction, and hopefully passage, of legislation enabling construction of the bridge to begin, the budget commitment is a clear signal that the Canadian Government’s commitment to the new crossing has not wavered. “It’s clear that the Government is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to the new Windsor-Detroit crossing,” Laskowski said. “Hopefully this budget commitment will help the efforts in Lansing by Governor Rick Snyder to get the Michigan Legislature to finally move forward on this important project.” Regarding other Ontario projects bridges in eastern Ontario, MacdonaldCartier and Alexandra Bridges were also the benefactor of federal money for improvement. On the environmental front, OTA echoed the call from the Canadian Trucking Alliance hoping the $48 million dollars allocated in the federal budget will be targeted toward a program assisting carriers to purchase fuel efficiency improvement equipment, aerodynamic devices, idling reduction, and energy efficient tires. Such an incentive program would be a welcome addition to Ontario carriers with the elimination of Ontario’s Green Commercial Vehicle Program. www.roadtoday.com

The MTO is coming to do an audit! What do we do?? Q
C
uite simply as much as you can to make their job as simple as possible. This means everything you have been doing all along needs to given to them on a silver platter. 1) They can come in anytime The Highway Traffic Act states clearly that fact. They do not, nor are they required to give any advance notice. 2) They can request information for as many drivers as they please. There is no limit or maximum or minimum they can request to look at. In fact once they start finding problems, be sure they will audit more drivers. 3) They want to match time lines with the driver's logs. This means, Trip reports, Toll receipts, Bridge crossings, Fuel pump receipts, Service receipts, Satellite readings, all have to be made available to them. It is a given if they are are coming in to see you there is already a problem and they want to discover what it is! 4) The hta says all information should be kept together easily identifiable in chronological order. when a driver comes back from a trip photocopy the receipts, put them all together, and staple them to the trip report they hand in. That way the MTO auditor can see everything clearly
and concisely. No questions, no gray areas, everything is accounted for. The auditors in question, know what they are doing, have a pretty good idea of time lines, and have all the tools with them to make their job easier. 5) The auditors will ask you questions! Remember everything and anything you say can be used in court. They are representing the Crown and you are representing the company. If, as Safety and Compliance Managers, you are responsible for the day to day functions, then you will need a letter, signed by a Director (READ SIGNING OFFICER), of the Company authorizing you to speak, act, and provide and and all information on behalf of the company. We have said it many times, and in many articles, by many, many authors, the mindset has to be such, in a company from the Top Down, that everything is done to ensure not only the Driver’s safety but the General Public on the roads they share at the same time. Within reason as long as there is nothing to hide, it should never be an arduous task. It should be simple, and straight forward. Keep your records, as organized as possible in chronological order, easily identify trucks, drivers, loads, dates, etc. and there should not be any problems.
What is at stake? How about the business and customers you service. Remember initially business was obtained because you had a service to offer. You still do. However now your safety rating drops to Conditional from Satisfactory. Some of those same clients do not want to deal with you anymore. They do not have the same comfort level, they used to with you. How about Insurance rates? We all know how Safety ratings affect the cost of Insurance these days. If as a Company, you cannot operate at a Satisfactory level, and have been Downgraded to Conditional then of course they too realize something is wrong. Everything is not operating the way it should be. As a partner in your business, and for the amount of money Insurance costs these days, there is too much at stake not to look at Ratings issued by the appropriate Government authority. What else is at stake? This will now effect, any future growth plans as well. It may limit the number of trucks you will be allowed to operate. It may limit the new opportunities you can pursue (L.C.V's). The public may not be aware, but everyone inside the business is aware, if you do not have a Satisfactory rating with the MTO you cannot operate LCV's. One more way the Ministry keeps tabs on what you do and how you do it.
International Safety and Innovation Award now open to Canadian companies
anadian companies now have the chance to compete for the European Transport Training Association’s (EuroTra) prestigious Safety and Innovation Award, recognizing the best product or service that can be used to improve road safety in Europe’s trucking and logistics industry. The opportunity is one of the first benefits to emerge through the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council’s (CTHRC) recent affiliation with the Association. Last year’s EuroTra Safety and Innovation Award was awarded to a joint partnership between Shell Chemicals Europe BV (the Netherlands) and Bertocco Automotive Engineering (Italy). Both companies developed an innovative early warning device that helps prevent tanker rollovers. Representatives of Volvo Trucks and EuroTra will judge how submissions are: • clearly linked to road safety and encourage a continuous process in road safety • connected to the benefits of training and education
• helping to solve environmental issues • innovative in nature Winners of the honour will earn 1,500 Euros (about $2,150) and have the chance to deliver a short presentation on their product or service during an award ceremony at the EuroTra Winter Assembly to be held Dec. 1 and 2 in London, England. EuroTra will pay the travel and accommodation costs for the winning company’s representative. EuroTra includes 20 member training organizations in 14 European countries. The Association is dedicated to developing and training human resources, enhancing the transport and logistics sector’s image, helping to develop and implement innovative training methods and tools, and promoting road safety among fleets and drivers. A copy of the award submission form is available through CTHRC. Submissions are due by Friday, Sept. 16 (12 p.m. Central Europe Time) and are to be sent directly to EuroTra.
PeopleNet Introduces More Efficient, More Compact Version of BLU In-Cab Computing System: BLU.2
P
DOT instead of having to call dispatch to have logs printed and faxed to them. Ed King, mobile communications manager for Intermodal Cartage, an IMC company, explained that after completing beta testing, he’ll be replacing the PeopleNet Driver Terminal displays with 225 BLU.2 units and later converting an additional 350 units for the Intermodal Service divisions he’s responsible for. He said, “The drivers now using BLU.2 took to it like a duck to water. The transition is easy and intuitive. They’re having no problem getting used to the bigger, seven-inch color screen display.” King also discussed how BLU.2 will make his drivers more efficient. “First, roadside inspections should be quicker and easier, because the eDriver Logs grid displays full details of a driver’s time. And because BLU.2 is Windows based, we have more opportunities for electronic forms that will eliminate re-entry of information into our proprietary computer system.” Running on WinCE 6.0, BLU.2 operates more quietly and offers more installation options and louder sound range, further enhancing the platform’s Text to Speech feature which allows drivers to play an audio version of messages on screen. Safe Mode enables fleets to limit driver interaction with the system while the vehicle is moving. The BLU.2 device and common codebase are a reflection of PeopleNet’s commitment to its large BLU installed base, which PeopleNet will support indefinitely.
eopleNet, the provider of innovative and integrated onboard computing and mobile communications systems for effective fleet management has introduced a more efficient, more compact version of its BLU in-cab computing system. Making the announcement at the PeopleNet Canada Transportation Symposium held recently in Toronto, PeopleNet CEO Ron Konezny said, “Our next-generation BLU.2 onboard computing system demonstrates our continued support of BLU as a platform. In addition to new features that enhance driver efficiency, it’s 65 percent lighter, thinner, and provides better extreme temperature performance with 40 percent faster startup in cold weather. Because BLU.2’s platform is the same as BLU, customers will be able to add BLU.2 to their current BLU network. And because the software between each model is nearly identical, the new display can be easily added without reprogramming back-office software. Further, existing Driver Terminal customers can upgrade to the BLU.2 device while using their existing onboard computing and mounting options, so they can leverage their investments and save significant costs on upgrades.” Mackinnon Transport Linehaul Coordinator Shelley Hickey describes BLU.2’s new functions as “absolutely wonderful.” In particular, she cited the ability to change duty without having to contact the firm’s safety department; the panic alarm feature that goes directly to whomever is designated as the primary contact; the onscreen keyboard; and electronic logs available on screen for

Above and Beyond the Call of Duty – How Trucking Helped a Little Girl! It’s Tuesday morning and I am swimming from end to end of the massive pool for my morning swim. Normally I have the pool to myself due to the time of day, but this morning I am joined by another person who has taken up the other side of the pool. We both swim our laps and every once in a while take a break at the deep end of the pool. On this particular break the woman decides to strike up a conversation and we carry on about the weather as most people do. She asks what I do for a living and I tell her about my various businesses and what they entail. After mentioning that I have been in the transportation industry for over thirty years and drove a transport truck for twenty five of those thirty years her eyes light up. After some more brief conversation she tells me about her early childhood. Apparently when she was a child her family grew up in poverty. They were living in the United States at the time and were a very hard working but poor family. Although I don’t know the details, the women shared with me that she was selected as a recipient of a scholarship to go to school. The sponsor of the scholarship was the American Trucking Association also known as the “ATA”. She is now in her retirement years and is well off with cottages in the Muskokas, and a vacation place in Florida. She feels she owes much of the success in her life to the truckers of this world for giving her that chance to be more than she felt she could have been if it wasn’t for the scholarship. She has a great respect for the men and women of the highway and makes sure to always flash her lights and leave room to let a big rig into the lane in front of her. You’re probably wondering why I shared that story with you, what
does swimming have to do with transportation? The reason I shared that story is to let you know that because you are driving a truck doesn’t mean that you are not helping humanity on a whole. Although this was the American Trucking Association it could well have been the Ontario Trucking Association, or Manitoba
Trucking Asscoiation, or any of the other major associations here in Canada. You as a driver may not always see the big picture of how people are helped
on a daily basis, but know that you are helping people. Look at it this way. You are helping people daily in bringing them products that they can use in their daily lives. Your company may give money and donations to charities and also be part of a larger organization such as the Ontario Trucking Association. The Ontario Trucking Association may be part of a larger group again such as the Canadian Trucking Alliance. That larger organization may give away a certain amount of money in the way of scholarships, aid, or other types of donations. So as you can see you are just one small piece of a much larger puzzle. You are helping people everyday just by doing your job. When your company has “Jean Fridays” or “United Way Mondays” then you are helping people. Look at my friends at KRTS Transportation; they hold a food drive each year bringing tons of food to their local food banks and people in need. The point is that you should feel good about what you are doing for the world while you are doing your job. Whether you realize it or not you are helping your local charities, your country, and yourself by being in the driver’s seat. Even if you didn’t help millions of people maybe you changed a life, maybe you helped just one little girl. Not bad for a day’s work.

Manitoulin Transport TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index Records Opens One of the Largest Transportation Facilities Second Highest in Western Canada Volume in 2011
M
T
anitoulin Transport recently celebrated the grand opening of its new 100,000 sq. ft. terminal in Acheson, Alberta. The terminal, which represents an important company investment in western Canada, will enable significantly more shipping capacity for Manitoulin Transport and provide its customers with access to a full suite of transportation services. Manitoulin Transport’s two existing terminals in Edmonton have been consolidated into the new facility and all incumbent personnel have transferred to the new premises at 402-53114 Range Road 262, Acheson Industrial Area. The new terminal is one of the largest transportation facilities in western Canada, with a terminal and garage building, including a large freezer and cooler area, situated on 30 acres of land. The extensive property enables over-dimensional shipments to be staged and maneuvered with ease. The cross-dock terminal has 80 dock doors enabling faster and more efficient loading and unloading of shipments. This investment will serve as a springboard for future developments, such as additional service coverage, in order to accommodate customers’ constantly evolving needs.
ransCore’s Canadian Freight Index posted the second highest number of loads this year. May 2011 volume rose two percent from April with an eight percent increase year-overyear. Equipment postings in May reached the highest levels for 2011, with capacity up over 13 percent from last month’s total. Capacity remained at the same recorded levels for May 2010. With the higher volumes in equipment availability, the equipment-to-loads ratio increased for the first time in three months. TransCore’s Loadlink freight matching database constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries and has been available to Canadian subscribers since its inception in 1990. Over 13 million full loads, LTL (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually. As a result of this high volume, TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight movement and provides a historical account of the domestic and cross border spot market freight movement.

this year. Canadian consumers will benefit from this merger in several ways over the coming months. To start, SiriusXM Canada will be launching a new channel dedicated to Aboriginal content by September of this year. “We’re excited about the launch of this new channel which further demonstrates our commitment to the diverse cultural makeup of Canadian content,” said Redmond. The merger will have no immediate effect on the current service coverage or existing radios, and in the near term, customers can expect to interact with each company as they always have.

Brachial Plexus Injuries in Truck Drivers The brachial plexus is a bundle of nerves that runs from your spinal chord through your shoulder and all the way into your hand. This vital network of nerves carries signals from your brain to your entire upper limb. Injuries to the brachial plexus usually occur when these nerves are stretched or torn. This is a fairly common injury among professional truck drivers due to the demands of their job. In most cases, brachial plexus injuries happen when your shoulder is pressed down while your head is pushed up and away from that shoulder. This movement causes tension on the nerve bundle and may damage individual nerves. The most common cause of this type of injury that I see in my practice is truck drivers raising and lowering the landing gear of a trailer. Often times the gear will slip causing the driver’s arm to be forced forward with high velocity. A similar situation occurs to flatbedders when the chain slips when they are securing a load. In both cases, the brachial plexus is stretched and injured. Other less common causes include slips and falls, inflammation and tumors. The symptoms of a brachial plexus injury vary from person to person. However, usually only one arm is affected. Minor injures to the brachial plexus which are often referred to as “stingers,” cause symptoms such as a feeling of an electrical shock or burning shooting down your arm. It may also cause paresthesias, which is
a sensation of numbing and weakness in the upper limb. These symptoms often only last for a few seconds or minutes, but some may persist for days or weeks. Severe injuries to the brachial plexus result from tears and ruptures of the nerves themselves. In this situation, you may lose the ability to move your shoulder, elbow and/ or hand as well as severe pain in the upper limb. It is important to see your doctor if you suspect that you have a brachial plexus injury as it can lead to permanent weakness or disability.
In order to help your doctor diagnose the severity of the injury to the brachial plexus, they may order a few tests. The first test is called an electromyogram. This test is designed to check the health of the nerves that move your muscles. The next test is called a nerve conduction study. This test measures how quickly the nerve impulse is conducted through your nerves. Finally, your doctor may order a MRI or CT scan. Both of these tests will help to visualize the injured nerve structures. Once your doctor has identified the location and severity of the injured nerves, they will discuss with you the possible treatment options.

In less severe cases in which the nerves have only been stretched, no treatment is required as the nerves will recover on their own. However, in more severe cases where the nerves have been torn or severed, surgery is often the treatment of choice. Surgery to repair damaged nerves should ideally be done within three to six months after injury so as to avoid significant muscle wasting. Recent studies have shown that the success rate drops tremendously if the surgery is performed more than one year after the onset of symptoms. Some medications have been shown to help manage the pain which is associated with this type of injury. Drugs containing opiates, such as codeine, are usually prescribed after the injury. Antidepressant and anticonvulsant medications have also shown to be effective in some cases. Although most brachial plexus injuries can not be prevented, professional truck drivers can take a few precautions to help minimize their chances of injuring themselves. Maintaining concentration and staying focus on the job at hand will help reduce careless mistakes. To add to this, using proper form and body postures while performing job tasks is important. Finally, keeping your muscles and joints flexible will help to reduce the tension of the brachial plexus. This can be accomplished by stretching on a regular basis. Well, I hope you found this article interesting and informative. Until next month, drive safely!
