Based upon the principles of dedication of funding, fairness, equity and accountability, and informed by broad and deep consultation throughout the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA), the investment tools as recommended by Metrolinx deserve a serious and timely

look by our political decision makers. We support the proposed creation of a dedicated Transportation Trust Fund to ensure that the projects are delivered and also to provide the accountability and transparency GTHA residents demand and deserve. Now is the time to get moving towards some tangible results in reducing traffic gridlock and achieving long-term economic growth and benefits for the region. Congratulations to Bramalea Secondary School for the official launch of the unique Truck and Coach program complementing the school’s existing Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in transportation. The program offered in partnership with Centennial College and other advanced training institutions prepares students for entry into post-secondary programs, or a career in the transportation industry upon graduation. As we enter the busy summer season, drivers are reminded to help keep our roads safe by not drinking and driving, and obeying the rules of the road. By driving defensively and being on the lookout for impaired, speeding and other dangerous drivers, everyone can help keep Ontario’s roads and waterways safe. Let’s do our part to make our lives safer by driving sensibly. We request all readers to keep the traditional and modern channels of communication open for an engaged conversation. 5th Annual Road Today Show A Great Success!

he 5th Annual Road Today Truck Show held at the new location Soccer Centre in Brampton was a very successful and well received Show. About 100 exhibitors from a variety of sectors of the trucking and transportation industry took part in the trade show, including companies focused on trucks (used and new), trailers, heavy-duty parts and accessories, s e r v i c i n g equipment and supplies, engines and power train components, fuels and fuel additives, media outlets and financial services. The Job Fair to hire drivers and owner-operators was a huge success. The staff from MTO commercial vehicle enforcement was there to answer queries of truckers. The show featured many activities of interest for attendeesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; young and old, including kids clown, live entertainment, rock wall, bouncy castle, rollover display, driving simulator, seminars, giveaways and lots more. Nearly 7000 enthusiasts came by to visit the Show during the weekend. The mood of exhibitors and visitors was upbeat. The show was inaugurated by Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell

The Road Today Trucking Excellence Awards were presented to Aman Thakral of ITS Transport (Owner Operator of the Year), Dr Peter Gibson of Bramalea Secondary School (Trucking Educationist of the Year) and Hans Janzen of Mississauga (Trucking Ambassador of the Year). he Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has once again thrown its support behind proposed changes to the International Registration Plan. Known as the Full Reciprocity Plan (FRP), the proposal will reduce administrative burdens and, by extension, the associated costs faced by carriers who are registered under IRP, says CTA. It would also eliminate the requirement for carriers to guess their miles travelled in the upcoming year by granting full registration reciprocity in all jurisdictions, as is done already under the International Fuel Tax Agreement. CTA, which backed a similar ballot on the FRP two years ago, has encouraged each of the provincial trucking associations to voice their unanimous approval for the new reciprocity plan to their IRP representatives. It’s expected the proposal will be put to a vote at IRP’s annual meeting in June. RT

Canada and the United States announce first-ever binational border infrastructure investment plan

he Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, along with Ray LaHood, Secretary of the United States Department of Transportation, and Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security have released the first-ever joint Canada-United States Border Infrastructure Investment Plan (BIIP). The development and release of this initiative fulfills a commitment made under the 2011 CanadaUnited States Beyond the Border Action Plan. The BIIP is an interagency and binational planning mechanism developed to establish a mutual understanding of recent, ongoing and potential border infrastructure investments. It outlines the approach that Canada and the United States will take to coordinate plans for physical infrastructure upgrades at small and remote ports of entry. This initiative will be updated and disseminated annually. The BIIP, along with other initiatives under the Beyond the Border Action Plan, is designed to benefit the integrated economies of Canada and the United States, which depend on the fluid movement of commercial and non-commercial traffic across our shared border. Its release follows recent announcements by the Government of Canada of significant investments at four initial priority land ports of entry identified by Canada in the Action Plan: Lacolle, Quebec; Lansdowne, Ontario (Thousand Islands Bridge); Emerson, Manitoba; and North Portal, Saskatchewan. The modernization of major border crossings will reduce wait times, increase reliability of just-in-time shipments, and decrease fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Canada and the United States enjoy the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest trading partnership, with two-way merchandise trade totalling $570 billion in 2012. In addition, the Government of Canada announced, in July 2012, the installation of technology to measure and report border wait times at the Peace and QueenstonLewiston Bridges. For differential exchanges it takes approximately 15 minutes to change over parts. In some cases it’s in the customer’s best interest or preferred by the customer to repair their own unit. In most cases the replacement parts will be in their inventory or easily accessible for a quick turn around on the repair. March 2013 marked the 10th year as an Authorized Allison Transmission maintenance and overhaul dealer. The Allison

Department is fully equipped with Diagnostic equipment and its own Transmission Dynamometer. Their Allison Trained Technicians are able to cover diagnostics, troubleshoot problems, repair wiring and electrical issues, Transmission failures and much more. The mRIDE is a six-rod spring suspension with Mack ductile iron axle housings and Mack C150/151 series axle carriers. The Mack mRIDE spring suspension creates superior comfort, performance and return on investment for refuse customers. The mRIDE’s spring leaf design and V-shaped torque rods ensure stability by efficiently transmitting forces into the truck’s frame. Shock absorbers in combination with rubber and steel shock towers also improve ride and handling. OTA Helps Launch Bramalea Secondary School’s Unique Truck & Coach Program

epresentatives of the Ontario Trucking Association were joined by politicians and education officials at Bramalea Secondary School in Brampton on May 16th to mark the official launch of the high school’s Truck and Coach program and technical facility. The OTA helped make the event possible with a one-time donation of $20,000 towards the program and new state-ofthe-art facility. Federal Minister of Labour Lisa Raitt, Minister of State for Sport Bal Gosal, Ontario Minister of Education Liz Sandals and many other dignitaries were among those in attendance. “I offer a special thanks to the Ontario Trucking Association and its member carriers for this generous contribution,” said Peter Gibson, vice-principal of Bramalea. “The donation helped ensure the creation of this unique program and facility, which alone sets us apart from any Truck and Coach program in Ontario, and possibly Canada.” The Truck and Coach program offered at Bramalea complements the school’s existing Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in transportation. It prepares students for entry into post-secondary programs, or a career in the transportation industry upon graduation. Students in the program will complete all requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, while taking courses focused on various aspects of the transportation industry. The program is offered in

partnership with Centennial College and other advanced training institutions. Classes take place in a state-of-the-art facility with drivethrough tractor-trailer bays, classroom labs and an open lab work area. Hands-on learning at the facility is strengthened through coop programs, job shadowing, field trips and excursions, all under the guidance of Gibson, who once operated a trucking company. “OTA is proud to be part of the creation of such a worthwhile program,” said Stephen Laskowski, OTA senior vice-president. “We’re hopeful this one-time contribution and support from Ontario carriers will encourage local transportation companies to sponsor similar programs in their communities that also promote trucking careers to young people.” RT

Metrolinx Outlines Detailed Plan to fund Big Move Transportation Plan

he Metrolinx Board of Directors has presented its report to the Province of Ontario and municipalities recommending an Investment Strategy to support over 400 km of new and enhanced transit, along with improvements to roads and highways. “Congestion is getting worse every day. It’s having an increasingly negative impact on both our quality of life and our region’s economy,” said Robert Prichard, Chair of the Metrolinx Board. The Big Move’s Next Wave of projects will transform the region by building new light rapid transit in Mississauga, Brampton and Hamilton; new bus rapid transit in Halton, Peel, Toronto and Durham; subway expansion with the Relief Line and the Yonge Subway Extension into York Region; major enhancements to GO Transit as well as improvements to municipal transit projects, roads and highways, and active transportation options. This Investment Strategy is designed to support a set of transit and transportation projects that comprise the Next Wave of The Big Move. The Investment Strategy is made up

of four parts, with 24 accompanying recommendations: 1. Integrating Transportation, Growth, and Land Use Planning. 2. Maximizing the Value of Public Infrastructure Investment. 3. Optimizing System and Network Efficiency. 4. Dedicating New Revenue Sources for Transit and Transportation. MAXIM CHARITY BBQ BREAKS ATTENDANCE RECORD

t Maxim’s Charity BBQ held on May 29, 2013 in Winnipeg, over 600 participants helped raise of $16,500 for Charity. The record attendance also resulted in a record for funds raised in a single event. “This year’s large selection of raffle prizes really helped us attract more people and raise more funds for charity,” says Steve Young, VP of Parts at Maxim Truck & Trailer and chief organizer of this year’s event. “We owe a great deal of thanks to our vendors and suppliers for their generous support,” he goes on to say. All funds raised during this year’s event will go to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation through their “Challenge for Life” campaign. Maxim’s seven Challenge for Life team

members have now exceeded their goal by raising over $48,000 for this year’s campaign. The Challenge for Life campaign culminates in a 20 km walk on June 8, 2013. While a live band played, the 600 participants that included friends, customers and suppliers were treated to an old fashioned BBQ. oe had been running a small trucking operation for a few years. He had started as an Owner Operator running his own truck and over the years had graduated to owning four units. He had been able to get good drivers to work for him however, times were getting tough and it was getting harder and harder to keep up with repairs and the cost of doing business. The maintenance had been starting to drag a little and inspections were getting farther and farther apart. Fred was a relief driver for Joe and helped out on various runs when required. He didn’t have the experience of the other drivers but was good with directions and maps and able to get around. On this particular trip Fred didn’t have to go far however, he had one obstacle in his way, a mountain grade known as “The Butcher.” It was known as “The Butcher” because it seemed to chop down vehicles that attempted to go down its slopes. There had been a number of accidents

on this mountain in the past. Fred approached the top of the mountain and pulled into the brake check area at the top of the mountain. He did a quick check, found the brakes a little spongy, but not too bad and decided he was good to go down. He put the rig in gear and continued down the mountain at a slow pace. He began to pick up speed however and because he had chosen a higher gear than he should have he was starting to rely on the truck brakes to slow him down even more. At ﬁrst he started with the trailer brakes alone and then started using the pedal even more. The truck picked up even more speed causing Fred to go into panic mode. As he rolled into the lower portion of the turns he realized he was out of control, he could smell the smoke from the brakes and a grey cloud was now following the truck. The speedometer was creeping up faster and faster and Fred was now looking for places to bail if he had to. The signs

for a runaway ramp were now becoming more frequent as he rolled down the side of the mountain and his biggest problem was getting up the nerve to take the ramp. Realizing he had no choice he prepared for the exit, clinging the steering wheel as tightly as he could, he grabbed the radio handset and announced he was in trouble and would be taking the runaway ramp. As he came down the side his face was as red as the summer sun, signs were more frequent outlining the ramp and he tried to focus and stay in control, he was scared, would this be it, would he make it through, would he make it out alive? Thoughts of family went through his mind, in the corner of his eye he caught the ﬂashing lights for the ramp, here we go he thought, bracing for the impact Fred focused on steering the truck into the ramp. As he drove into the gravel pit of the ramp it was as though the truck had drove into a pool, sinking as it went forward, Fred was holding on

for dear life at this point, his eyes were closed, the rest was out of his control. The truck sat idle in the gravel, a blanket of silence covered the area. Was Fred alive? As the rescue crews began to dig him out Fred did make it with a few broken bones. The truck inspected and found to have brakes that were out of adjustment. The charges to the company put Joe out of business. Brakes out of adjustment are the leading cause of out of service violations and ﬁnes. Proper adjustment is critical and starts with the pre-trip inspection. RT

For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. Transit alone is not going to solve the congestion problem, says OTA President Bradley

etrolinx has unveiled its proposed investment strategy to raise the money needed to pay for its regional transportation plan, called The Big Move. The plan, almost entirely focussed on transit, will require $20 billion over the next 10 years. In coming up with its recommended “revenue tools,” Metrolinx – the Government of Ontario’s agency created in 2006 to improve the coordination and integration of all modes of transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) – examined a number of potential new or increased taxes and fees, including such things as employer payroll taxes, tolls, distance taxes etc., before settling on the following short-list of proposed measures: • Establishment of a legal, dedicated transportation trust fund. All funds raised through the Metrolinx investment strategy would go into the fund; • A 1-per cent increase in the HST on either a regional or province-wide basis; • A 5-cent per litre regional diesel fuel and gasoline tax; • A variable regional business parking levy; • An increase in regional development charges. The ball is now in the Government of Ontario’s court to decide on which of the measures to implement and how. Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has said she plans to embark on a series of “conversations” over the course of the summer. She has indicated the need to alleviate congestion in the GTHA is such a priority that she is prepared to fight an election on the issue. OTA president David Bradley says the association will be a constructive voice in the consultations, saying “gridlock is a real and growing problem in the region and the Premier is to be commended for making it a priority.” However, he cautions that transit alone is not going to solve the problem. “Goods movement received only a passing, over-simplified glance in the Big Move,” he said. “An efficient system of roads, highways and bridges in the region and throughout the province is needed and all the monies raised from the industry by fuel taxes and commercial vehicle registration fees – which are in the process of being raised by 70 per cent incidentally – should be dedicated to that purpose through a specific highway trust fund on a provincial basis.” The proposed 5-cent per litre diesel fuel tax proposed by Metrolinx raises a number of issues in terms of the impact on the competitiveness of carriers located in the region, added Bradley. “There is a question whether it is fair that truckers are asked to pay for transit,” he said. “Unlike motorists, who have a choice in terms of whether to take transit or continue to drive, truckers have no such choice. The evening was graciously hosted and sponsored by Wakeﬁeld Canada, the Canadian Distributor of Castrol branded products. With the new engine speciﬁcations being mandated by the EPA for 2016, the engine oil manufacturers will need to meet the engine specs as well. A new service category will be issued in 2016,

Trigger Finger

s part of their jobs, many professional truck drivers put tremendous strain on their hands. Whether it is gripping the steering wheel or securing a load, drivers are more prone to developing a hand condition called trigger finger than the average person. The medical term for trigger finger is stenosing tenosynovitis. This condition is characterized by a finger or thumb being stuck in a bent position. When straightened, the finger releases with a quick snap similar to a trigger on a gun. Trigger finger most often affects people who continuously work with their hands. Repetitive gripping motions are by far the most common cause of this condition. The repetitive movement of the hand causes irritation and inflammation in the sheath that surrounds the tendon of the affected finger. This eventually leads to narrowing of the sheath which in turn restricts the movement of the tendon. At times the tendon will catch or get stuck in a bent position before popping straight. With

prolonged inflammation, the tendon may thicken and scar which can lead to the formation of nodules. When this occurs, the movement of the finger is greatly affected. The symptoms of trigger finger range from person to person. It can be as mild as morning stiffness in the finger. Another common symptom is popping or clicking of the

tests such as MRIs or CT scans are not necessary. The type of treatment your health professional will recommended is usually based on the severity of your symptoms. For mild cases, splinting is a common form of treatment. Your health professional may require you to wear a splint that keeps your ﬁnger in an extended position

finger during movement. In the most severe cases, the finger will lock in a bent position. Trigger finger most commonly affects the thumb and first two fingers of a person’s dominant hand. However, more than one finger can be affected at a time. The diagnosis of trigger finger is usually based on a detailed medical history and physical examination by your health professional. In most cases, sophisticated imaging

for up to six weeks. The splint prevents you from moving or bending your finger which will reduce the irritation and inflammation. Another commonly used treatment is finger exercises which are aimed at maintaining movement of your finger. To add to this, avoiding repetitive gripping movements for a few weeks is a good idea. For more severe cases, your health professional may recommend anti inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen. These

medications may help to reduce the swelling and pain that is associated with trigger finger. Steroid injections are also a possible treatment for severe cases. Although much less common, surgery aimed at releasing the trapped tendon may be performed. Alternative therapies such as massage and acupuncture have also been shown to help relieve the symptoms of trigger finger in some cases. If you do begin to notice the symptoms of trigger finger in yourself, it is important to consult with a health care professional as soon as possible due to the fact that this condition is much easier to treat in its early stages.
