responsibility, but it starts with you. Drinking and driving offences continue to be the leading criminal cause of death in Ontario. The Government is implementing new drinking and driving measures. These new changes effective August 1st will primarily help in protecting young and novice drivers and are a welcome step. Ontario consumers are now eligible for an incentive ranging from $5,000 to $8,500 towards the purchase or lease of a new plug-in hybrid electric or battery electric vehicle. For the purposes of this program a battery electric vehicle (EV) is a vehicle that is powered by electricity and contains a battery to store energy. Please visit www.mto.gov.on.ca for more details. elcome to the August 2010 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. Fergus Truck Show, the leading family entertainment and trucking event in North America has successfully completed 25 glorious years serving the trucking industry. We would like to congratulate the show management for organising another memorable weekend full of chrome, horsepower, music, camping and family fun. See some select show pictures on Pages 24 and 25 and also on our website at www.roadtoday.com Summer is a time to celebrate with friends and family. However it is disappointing to note that we continue to lose precious human lives in roadway collisions due to reckless behavior of few road users. Law enforcement agencies are working hard to focus on “the big three” causes of injuries on the roads - aggressive driving, drinking and driving and improper use of seatbelts. We encourage all our readers to follow road safety rules and regulations diligently. Remember, road safety is everyone’s

Ontario Government Implements New Drinking And Driving Measures

O

ntario’s roads are among the safest in North America and our Graduated Licensing System (GLS) has proven to reduce the collision risk among young drivers. To build on these results, new measures contained in the Road Safety Act, 2009 go into effect August 1, 2010. These changes will encourage new and young drivers to drive responsibly, obey the conditions of their licence class and make Ontario’s roads safer for all drivers. Zero Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) for Young Drivers 21 Years of Age and Under and Novice Drivers Research shows that ages 19, 20 and 21 are the peak years for drinking and drivingrelated collisions. Drivers aged 19 to 21 are almost one-and-a-half times as likely to be involved in drinking and driving fatal and injury crashes. In the 10 years prior to 2006, 235 drivers age 21 and under were killed in drinking and driving collisions. Effective August 1, 2010, all drivers 21 years of age and under, regardless of their class of licence, must maintain a zero blood alcohol concentration level when driving. Penalties for non-compliance are as follows: Young Drivers (21 years of age and under). • Immediate 24-hour licence suspension at roadside. • A fine of $60 to $500 • A 30-day licence suspension. Novice Drivers • Immediate 24-hour licence suspension at roadside. • A fine of $60 to $500 and a licence suspension and escalating penalties, which may include cancellation of the novice licence. Escalating Sanctions for Novice Drivers Any driver that holds a novice class licence will face escalating sanctions for: • Any combination of repeat violations of G1, G2, M1 and M2 conditions • Convictions for individual HTA offences totalling four or more demerit points or; • A court-ordered licence suspension for HTA offences that re sult in four or more demerit points. The Novice Driver Escalating Sanctions are: • 30-day licence suspension for a first instance. • 90-day licence suspension for a second instance. • Cancellation of novice licence, loss of all credit for any fees or

ROAD TODAY AUGUST 2010

time spent in GLS including any Beginner Driver Education time discount, and requirement to re-apply to enter G1 or M1, as the case may be, for a third instance. Reduced Licence Suspension with Ignition Interlock Device Research shows that many drivers with suspended licences continue to drive, despite their suspension. These drivers are a danger to other road users. Collisions involving drivers suspended for a drinking and driving conviction are 3.4 times more likely to be fatal. These drivers are also more likely to have been cited as having been drinking or impaired at the time of the collision. Currently, convicted impaired drivers must serve lengthy driver’s licence suspensions of at least one year and complete a remedial measures program before being eligible to have their licences reinstated. However, about 40 per cent of these convicted impaired drivers never reach this point and research suggests that up to 75 per cent of suspended drivers continue to drive during their suspension. As part of 2007’s Safer Roads for a Safer Ontario Act, Ontario’s Reduced Suspension with Ignition Interlock Conduct Review Program uses ignition interlock to prevent convicted impaired drivers from re-offending and driving while suspended. The program works by reducing a convicted impaired driver’s suspension as long as they agree to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle, submit to regular monitoring of their driving behaviour and abide by other strict program rules. Changing Behaviours of First-time Offenders By offering an incentive to return to the licensing system, the program gives first-time offenders the opportunity to drive their vehicles legally earlier. However, their behaviour will be strictly monitored to help ensure that they are driving sober. The installation of ignition interlock devices can help reduce the risk to other road users in a number of important ways such as: • Preventing drivers from starting their car if they have been drinking. • Helping convicted impaired drivers learn to keep their drink ing and driving behaviours separate. • Reducing the likelihood that a convicted impaired driver will re-offend in the future by up to 95 per cent.

Cummins validates its ISX11.9 as better engine choice for vocational and specialty vehicles ISX11.9 receives 2010 EPA and ARB Certification

C

ummins has received certification from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (ARB) for its ISX11.9 diesel engine. The new ISX11.9 is an expansion of the industry-leading Heavy-Duty engine product line for Cummins and will commence with full production in August. Certification of the ISX11.9 rounds out the complete lineup of Cummins engine offerings for on-highway applications for 2010. The current EPA regulations took effect January 1, 2010, and are the most stringent in the world for on-highway commercial vehicle engines. Cummins ISX11.9 meets the emissions regulations for Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) of 0.2 grams and 0.01 grams per brake-horsepower-hour, respectively. The rugged ISX11.9 builds upon the legacy of strength and performance of the Cummins ISM engine and the proven technology of the ISX15. Cummins ISX11.9 has improved reliability and durability that can be attributed to the benefits of 10 years of advancements incorporated into the ISX15, today’s market-share leader for the Class 8 commercial vehicle market. The Cummins ISX11.9 utilizes common components with the ISX15, including an enhanced cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, a single VGT Turbocharger and the proprietary XPI fuel system. Like the lineup of on-highway Heavy-Duty and MidRange engines, the ISX11.9 will also utilize Cummins Aftertreatment System with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.

Featuring better pulling power, excellent driveability and stronger clutch engagement torque, the ISX11.9 is designed for rigorous duty cycles, including those for work trucks such as dump and mixer trucks, and refuse applications. Additionally, a full suite of horsepower and torque ratings are available for fire and emergency vehicles, recreational vehicles and motor coaches as well as tanker and day cab operations in Class 8 trucks. “Cummins is excited about the expansion of the Heavy-Duty product line to include the ISX11.9, which is ideally suited for vocational and specialty vehicles,” said Ed Pence, Vice President and General Manager – Heavy-Duty Engine Business. “Customers can be confident that the ISX11.9 is the better choice for these applications, which require strength, performance and maximum uptime in their operations.” Cummins will offer horsepower ratings of 310-450 (231-336 kW) and torque ranging from 1150-1650 lb-ft (1559-2237 N•m) for the ISX11.9, depending upon vehicle application. The compact design of the ISX11.9 allows customers to select engine options that have been tailored to suit unique operating needs. Optional features include single- and dual-cylinder air compressors, Front Engine Power Take-Off (FEPTO) and the enhanced Cumminsdesigned Rear Engine Power Take-Off (REPTO) for customers who need to maximize payload.

TST Overland Express Launches Reduced Delivery Times from South Central and Western US to Western Canada TST Overland Express recently introduced a new freight delivery model that cuts delivery times from California and the South Central regions of the US to 2 days to Vancouver and 3 days to Calgary. There are two key factors at the core of the transportation network improvements – direct line haul and proprietary technology. Direct line haul lanes have been implemented from Texas and Los Angeles to Calgary and Vancouver. The new service reduces freight handling and transit times from origin to destination, which in turn enables TST to provide industry-leading service. Proprietary TST technology applications have been designed specifically for expedited, efficient management of route and cross border activity. Based on input from customers, brokers and both US and

Navistar Receives J.D. Power and Associates Customer Satisfaction Awards International Brand Commercial Trucks Rank Highest in Vocational Truck Segment and Dealer Service Among Class 8 Customers

N

avistar, Inc.’s International brand commercial trucks rank highest in customer satisfaction among Class 8 truck owners in the Vocational Truck and Dealer Service segments—the only two categories recognizing the Class 8 truck industry this year—according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Heavy-Duty Truck Customer Satisfaction Study released last month. “We are proud to be recognized by J.D. Power and Associates with awards that signify Navistar’s commitment to providing the best possible experience for International truck customers,” said Jack Allen, president of Navistar’s North American truck group. “It’s gratifying to be acknowledged for our work to continuously improve our products and service to better meet the needs of our customers’ demanding businesses.” In the vocational truck segment, International brand Class 8 commercial trucks rank highest, performing particularly well in the engine, cab and body and transmission factors. In the service segment, International also ranks highest in Class 8 customer satisfaction and performs particularly well in all factors driving satisfaction: service delivery; service advisor; price; dealer facility; service quality; and service initiation. According to J.D. Power and Associates, with sales shrinking during the past few years, dealers have placed heavy emphasis on

improving the service experience to retain current customers and to help attract new ones. The average number of days to complete a repair has improved from 2.3 days in 2009 to 2.0 days in 2010. Getting a truck back on the road nearly a half day earlier may save the truck owner thousands of dollars in potential lost revenue and greatly improve overall service satisfaction. When it comes to meeting the needs of its customers and providing top-level customer service, Navistar prides itself on going “beyond the truck.” This past March, the company introduced OnCommand by Navistar— a bundled approach to service and after-sales support offerings. As one of the largest and most comprehensive packages of support services in the industry, OnCommand by Navistar helps customers achieve more efficient repairs and maintenance, better lifecycle value and an overall lower total cost of ownership—a combination that gives customers increased visibility and better control of their business. The 2010 Heavy-Duty Truck Customer Satisfaction Study is based on responses from 1,682 primary maintainers of 2009 model-year Class 8 heavy-duty trucks. The study was fielded in February and March 2010.

roduction of the 300,000th Volvo Group 13-Liter heavyduty diesel engine was celebrated on July 15 during an event in Hagerstown, MD, recognizing both the North American team that assembled it and the customer who will put it into service. The 300,000th Volvo 13-Liter, a 500 hp D13 engine, was recently assembled at the Volvo Powertrain plant in Hagerstown, and placed in a new Volvo VN780 chassis at Volvo Trucks’ New River Valley assembly plant. The completed truck was delivered back to Hagerstown and presented to its new owner –– Abilene Motor Express of Richmond VA –– during the July 15 recognition event. “We are happy and humbled to have assembled the 300,000th Volvo 13-Liter engine here in Hagerstown,” said Carlos Hungria,

senior vice president and chief operating officer, Volvo Powertrain. “This is a significant global occasion that solidifies the longevity and reliability of the engines powering Volvo Group products throughout the world. We’re particularly pleased that our 300,000th is an EPA2010-certified D13 engine that meets the most stringent emissions standards in the world.” Denny Slagle, president and CEO of Volvo Trucks North America, said the milestone sends an important message to the industry about the size, stability, and performance of Volvo Group. During the July 15 ceremony, Slagle presented the milestone vehicle’s keys to Abilene’s president, Keith Jones, who has been operating Volvo vehicles since 1999. Abilene’s Class 8 fleet includes 140 VN780s, with more than 50 EPA10 versions either already in service or soon to be so.

T

he Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) Livestock Transporters’ Division (LTD) is calling on industry members, customers and government to work together to create a safe, responsible and accountable system of live animal transport in the Province of Ontario The LTD recently issued a policy paper entitled, “Policy Recommendation to Create a Safe, Educated and Accountable Live Animal Transportation Supply Chain,” which outlines the Division’s proposal for improving the integrity of livestock transport in Ontario. Along with making several key recommendations, the policy paper also provides a brief history of animal transportation in Ontario and discusses the impact of several changes on supply chain members, the state of animals in the care of trucking companies and issues of government oversight. “Like every industry, our sector has undergone dramatic changes over the years greatly impacting our labour pool and our training and equipment requirements, as well as causing us to meet growing demands from fewer and fewer customers,” said Randy Scott, OTA LTD Chairman. The OTA LTD recognizes the need for increased focus on the safe and humane transportation of animals. The recommendations contained in the OTA LTD policy paper seek to ensure that animals are only entrusted to properly certified and trained trucking fleets. “The OTA LTD is committed to jointly developing a system with government and other members of the supply chain that ensures livestock is only transported by certified carriers and drivers,” said OTA Senior Vice President Stephen Laskowski. “However, within this system, government must be willing to impose penalties or fines on all members of the supply chain for failure to utilize certified transportation experts,” added Laskowski. The OTA LTD recommends: • Carriers retain control over their training programs in an effort to continually incorporate industry input, changes and best practices; • Training programs such as TQA and CLT, perhaps modified versions based on industry input, be made mandatory for drivers of livestock-carrying trucks, accompanied by appropriate enforcement 14

measures; • That all livestock transporters should fall under the same provisions as trucks required to have a CVOR; • Farmers and producers be required to ensure that their carriers satisfy CVOR requirements; • An Entrant Program (EP) be developed for all trucking companies engaged in the movement of live animals in Ontario, requiring the completion of a oneday course on safety and animal knowledge; • CFIA conduct random animal inspections at any loading points during livestock pickups to determine animal health; • Excellence should be demanded at all points of the supply chain. In addition to ensuring livestock transporters are trained, CFIA inspectors and members of the onroad enforcement community should also be educated so they can optimally fulfill their duties; • In addition to animal weight, all facilities handling livestock must be required to report previous feeding and watering of animals to drivers upon livestock pickup; • MTO conduct annual safety blitzes on highways and rural roads focusing on livestock carriers; • MTO conduct surprise mobile inspections at processing facilities; • OTA LTD be given a seat on the Ontario Pork Board, ensuring livestock transporters are fairly represented; • The Ontario Pork Board review the freeze on 1992 rates. The Ontario Trucking Association Livestock Transporters’ Division members operate close to 600 tractors across Ontario and Canada and enjoy over 50 years of experience in the transportation of live animals. hino Motors canada announces the Release of its 2011 Model Medium Duty truck line-up

H

ino Motors Canada will release its newly re-designed 2011 medium duty truck (“MDT”) line-up in September. The 2011 MDT line-up will feature a bold new design and functional improvements to enhance the trucks’ flexibility and driver comfort, efficiency and safety. The MDT’s will also feature significant technological improvements to meet new emissions regulations. Styling improves with a new hood and front grille. Driver comfort is enhanced with the addition of a driver’s seat armrest. Driver safety and efficiency improves with the addition of a Bluetooth-enabled GPS stereo and a new easy to read driver information display. All 2011 Hino MDT’s will utilize Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to fully comply with 2010EPA emissions requirements. Hino’s application of the technology is also expected to reduce fuel consumption by 3%-5%. The 2011 Hino 338 will receive a boost in power to 260 hp while the torque on the Hino 358 increases to 660 lbs-ft. The

changes will improve the throttle response and driveability of both models. Front axle capacity on the Hino 358 increases to 14,000 lbs. A ‘clean chassis’ option will be available for the Hino 268, 338 and 358. By transferring parts previously mounted on the outside of the frame rails behind the cab, this configuration will be ideal for beverage bodies, car carrier configurations and other applications. According to Eric Smith, National Sales Manager, “The launch of these new trucks is a milestone for Hino. The trucks have been redesigned virtually from the ground, up. Drivers will notice the bold new styling in addition to chassis and power train refinements. The environment will benefit from advanced SCR emissions controls that are fully EPA2010 emissions compliant. New chassis configurations and power improvements will open up new market opportunities for our products.” The new trucks will be assembled at Hino’s Canadian assembly plant located in Woodstock, Ontario.

Temporary Driver’s Licence Extension Expires September 1, 2010

O

ntario driver’s licences that were temporarily extended to accommodate drivers during the DriveTest strike will expire on September 1, 2010. It is important that you book now so you can complete your test on or before August 31, 2010. Your driver’s licence will not be valid after that date. To book your test, call 1-888-570-6110 or visit a DriveTest Centre in person. Between August 24, 2009 and January 4, 2010, regular driver examination services were unavailable at Ontario’s 56 DriveTest centres. To help affected motorists stay on the road, the Ministry of Transportation granted a temporary extension to drivers who needed to take a test in order to renew their driver’s licence, but were unable to do so because of the strike. transcore’s canadian loadlink service Enhances logistics Freight and Equipment Matching tools with google Maps

T

ransCore’s Canadian-based Link Logistics has announced the integration of Google Maps API Premier into its Loadlink logistics freight matching service. This major value-added integration allows Loadlink customers to map the origin and destination of all freight and equipment postings and matching leads with the ease of widely used and recognized Google Maps. Loadlink subscribers across Canada benefit from the convenience of mapping all their freight and truck matches based on the preferred sorting criteria they use to organize their search. Customers also have the option of viewing their leads in satellite and street views from Google Maps, providing them with a complete overview of available freight and equipment. The integrated Google Maps service enables dispatchers to make quick decisions based on the mapped coordinates within their Loadlink application without the time consuming process of searching multiple applications to find locations. The deployment of this feature for Loadlink.net version 2.8 users will be seamlessly integrated into the service without requiring any configuration changes. This value added service will be available to all Platinum customers at no additional charge this year. TransCore’s Claudia Milicevic explains, “Loadlink customers will experience improved dispatch and operations efficiency by optimizing their trip scheduling and logistics planning. This performance enhancing and mapping integration is part of our ongoing process to provide valuable and easy-to-use decision making tools for our customers.” Close to 5,000 Canadian transportation companies use Loadlink every day, conducting over 1.5 million searches on the largest freight and truck matching database in Canada.

Canadian Jurisdictions Conduct Roadcheck Annual Inspection Blitz

T

he annual North American roadside safety inspection blitz Roadcheck was conducted June 8-10 by enforcement agencies in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The event is coordinated by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) in partnership with CCMTA member-jurisdictions. As part of this year’s event, 80% of commercial vehicles inspected successfully passed, demonstrating the high level of mechanical fitness of Canada’s truck and bus fleet. Inspections were conducted at 158 sites across all Canadian jurisdictions, with those vehicles not bearing a valid inspection decal subjected to the most comprehensive and stringent of the CVSA on-road inspection procedures. Over the three-day event, 7,311 vehicles and drivers underwent full inspections for mechanical and driver fitness. Of those, 5,848 vehicles and 7,112 drivers passed CVSA’s rigorous roadside inspection criteria. Inspectors issued 6,911 new decals to individual trucks, trailers and passenger carrying vehicles across Canada, signifying CVSA’s highest degree of safety and mechanical fitness. In total, 1,434 trucks, 29 passengercarrying vehicles and 199 drivers were placed out of service for various safety defects and violations. An out-of-service condition can occur for infractions as simple as a rear signal light not working to the extreme of faulty steering or brakes. Other defects may include wheels, tires, frame and load security. In many cases, drivers are able to make the necessary adjustments on site, are re-inspected and continue on Interior Parts, Custom Products and Accessories their way. A total of 2.7% of drivers were placed out of service for log book, driver qualification or paperwork problems, a slight improvement over past figures. While slightly higher than last year’s figure of 17.8% , this year’s average vehicle out-ofservice rate of 20.0% continues an overall downward trend in the national OOS rate over the past several years. Brake-related defects continue to account for close to half of all outof-service violations. As such, CVSA Region V officials strongly encourage governments, industry associations and individual carriers and drivers alike to take an active part in the upcoming 2010 Brake Safety Week planned for September 12-18. The event is dedicated to enhancing knowledge, regulatory compliance and performance of commercial vehicle braking systems. ALK ALK Technologies has announced the newly released version of PC*MILER Web Services 24. This hosted interfacing application provides industry-standard PC*MILER map data and functionality quickly and efficiently to customers. It does this regardless of the IT infrastructure via a schema driven XML/SOAP interface developed in Microsoft.NET, packaged as a Web Service. It's a standardized way of embedding PC*MILER's truck-specific routes, mileage, maps, and reports with third party Web Services, and .NET applications. PC*MILER Web Services incorporates all of the features and benefits of PC*MILER 24, an essential tool to predict and manage operating and transportation costs. It reduces out-of-route mileage, saving time, tolls, and fuel. PC*MILER Web Services 24 also calculates precise truck-specific toll costs based on vehicle weight and axle count. The service also offers multiple version capabilities, supporting the special needs of customers with various versions of PC*MILER for contracts and billing. PC*MILER 24 encompasses 627,000 new and updated North American truck restrictions and 21,700 miles of new and updated truck-restricted roadway. The recently updated map data includes 3.52 million commercial truck restrictions, such as bridge heights, clearances and load limits. Its 427,600 urban road designations help keep commercial vehicles out of city centers and on designated truck-through routes around the city. PC*MILER is the most comprehensive and accurate truck-specific digital map data available. PC*MILER Web Services is hosted in a tier-one data center to ensure stability and reliability. Users can choose their Feature Option Level to gain access to the features of choice: Lite, Standard, or Premium. An ALK-designed, hosted and maintained Graphical User Interface (GUI) is also available that includes the service's features and functionality, eliminating the need to develop a graphical interface on your own.

Shaw Tracking Provides Enhanced Speed Data for Increased Safety SpeedGauge and Shaw Tracking Announce Partnership

S

peedGauge and Shaw Tracking have entered into a strategic alliance and patent license that gives customers integrated technology allowing carriers to schedule reports that rate and rank drivers and identify speed limit violations. Excessive speed is a major factor in 30% of fatal truck accidents and is a leading indicator of other types of poor driver behavior including poor fuel economy and vehicle maintenance costs. As fleets prepare for the implementation of Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 (CSA 2010), monitoring and managing speed is an integral part of any safety and compliance program. SpeedGauge is a simple, straight forward patented driver behavior safety training tool that uses street-level speed limit analysis to identify high-risk driving behavior. The system uses GPS data (location and speed) to identify high risk driving behavior. Specifically, SpeedGauge helps fleet managers identify drivers that habitually drive at excessive speeds on different types of roads. • Find drivers that speed through residential neighborhoods • Rank drivers tendency to exceed interstate speed limits • Measure changes in driver behavior over time • Compare drivers performance to the average for the

entire fleet • SpeedGauge services are available in both English and French “Our shared vision of providing superior fleet performance information to fleet management will make for a great partnership with Shaw Tracking,” said Bob Red, Vice President, SpeedGauge. “Safety and driver behavior are critical factors today and we look forward to working with Shaw Tracking to bring our solutions to market”. “The changes that we have seen in our industry are paramount, the roads are more congested, customers are more demanding and the regulatory issues that are being driven into our industry are increasing every year. Shaw Tracking continues to offer solutions that provide our customers with the data they need to make smart business decisions. We continue to leverage business with innovation,” said Mike Ham, Vice President, Shaw Tracking.

The Art Art of of Customer Customer Service Service The

Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.

I

t always surprises me the lack of Customer Service found in companies when speaking to their customer service agents. Now, I have worked for various companies large and small and have seen good and bad in both sizes of companies. The reason I bring this up is in the last week or so, I found some of the worst customer service in North America. What I have found in many cases is that the large companies who normally have the most access to customer service training have the worst customer service. I believe this is because they begin to know that they are the largest in their industry so they stop caring about the competition and forget why they are there. There have been many reports in the media as of late of large conglomerates abusing their power so I ask you to think about your business customer service. I meet with many entrepreneurs and small business and their customer service is usually very good. Why, because they are trying to get business and understand the importance of good customer service. What do they tell you in most training programs to do with marketing? Don’t focus on price, focus on value and service! In the transportation industry it is the same. The carriers bidding on price never win, but those with good equipment, and people don’t have that problem. Their problem is more often than not too much business.

Let me share with you this issue that got me to writing this article. I have left out the names to protect the guilty. If you’re doing any of these things, please stop, you’re killing your future. In the last couple of weeks I reserved a trailer to move some large pieces of furniture around town. This trailer is coming from a very reputable equipment agent here in town. I reserved in person a trailer for 2 days, no problem. About a week later I decided it would benefit me to change one day to a week earlier, so I called in with my confirmation number. To my surprise I hooked into a call centre in the United States. Not only that but I believe one of those independent call centers where each rep is actually in their pajamas at home. After the initial hello, the air went dead. All I could hear was breathing that really was annoying. After twenty minutes on the phone repeating myself many times interspaced with the annoying breathing bit and having to explain what a postal code was, the customer service agent ( to put it lightly) came up with a confirmation number and while remembering his closing remarks wished me a good day. I received a call the next day from the actual rental location and was asked to call back. When I returned the call I reached the call centre again, this time a different agent with the same annoying breathing. After two minutes into the call I could see we were heading in the wrong direction and told her I would

just drive over to the rental location. So that’s what I did, not holding back on the point that they need to improve their call centre’s customer service program. Their reaction was to get rid of it all together. In confirming the changes with the actual rental agent, I found out the call centre didn’t change my original confirmation for a trailer, but had now added another one for the same day. Why he would think I needed two trailers on the same day as I only have one car. The actual agent rectified the situation in two minutes flat. Now I understand people make mistakes and I also understand people may be learning, etc., however, if someone will be on the phone representing your company, there are some basic fundamentals they must possess or be trained on. First, NO DEAD AIR!!! That is not only offensive but very annoying to listen to. Talk about the weather; anything, maybe even try confirming the account of the person you are talking to. Be pleasant and uplifting and don’t give the impression you’re working in your basement in pajamas even if you are! Confirm details of the order and make sure the person is happy. Many companies want you to follow a script which is fine, but make sure you put some personality into it. After all so many companies are automated that a real person on the phone may just put your company in front of the rest. I hope my trailer is there when I arrive.

Canadian Carriers running the U.S.A. Check your CSA 2010 Status M

otorCarriers, operating in the USA can now check their CSA 2010 status by using their U.S. DOT number and assigned PIN. You will be able to review your safety performance data by the new Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). If you don't already have your P.I.N. you can request one via http://safer.fmcsa. dot.gov/ or by calling 1-800-832-5660 for assistance. FMCSA's CSA 2010 initiative will change the way carrier and driver performance are measured. CSA 2010 replaces SafeStat with a new Safety Measurement System (SMS) that measures the previous two years of roadside violations and crash data. With SMS, every inspection counts, not just out-of-service violations, and both driver and carrier safety performance are monitored using seven new BASICs. CSA 2010 will mean more contact between FMCSA and you the carrier. The new Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICS) : 1. Unsafe Driving 2. Fatigued Driving 3. Driver Fitness 4. Controlled Substances and Alcohol 5. Vehicle Maintenance 6. Improper Loading/Cargo Securement 7. Crash/Incident Experience These are some of the things we need to work on. Track and analyze your roadside inspection reports. Do you see

repeating operational or driver issues that could be corrected now? Audit your driver files. Are your drivers’ credentials current? Do your records accurately document the medical qualifications of your drivers? Create and communicate safety standards with comprehensive policies and procedures. If you have written procedures, review them to ensure you’re covering all your bases. Analyze your accident records for unsafe driving areas. Train on problem areas or retrain problem drivers. Make sure your operating authority and vehicle registrations are current. Check your vehicle maintenance records. Are your service records and schedules well documented? Review your Drug & Alcohol Testing programs. Is your program compliant? Are your supervisors properly trained? Have drivers received the training and information required under the law. A good Driver Behavior Management System will include the following training courses. These courses can be delivered and documented in class at the Conestoga Doon campus (Kitchener), The Ingersoll Skills Centre or on-site at your carrier place of business. 1. CSA 2010 Training 2. Roadside Inspections Training 3. Defensive Driving Training 4. Cargo Securement Training 5. Commercial Driver Alcohol & Drugs 6. Hours of Service Canada Training 7. Hours of Service USA Training

8. Vehicle Inspections Canada Training Another point I would like to touch upon is the EOBR rules. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has issued a sweeping new rule governing the manufacture and use of Electronic On-Board Recorders (EOBRs) in commercial motor vehicles. The rule will require thousands of carriers to install EOBRs - and encourage others to install them voluntarily - to monitor their drivers’ hours of service. One way a carrier might be able to lower its insurance costs is to install electronic on-board recorders (EOBRs) in its vehicles. A carrier who voluntarily installs EOBRs in all its vehicles openly demonstrates its resolve to provide the safest working environment for its employees and the public, and to manage above the standards of the industry. This carrier’s insurance provider, in all likelihood, will be ecstatic with this approach and may very well offer the motor carrier the financial benefits of a “low risk” carrier. Opting to install EOBRs may be the best investment a motor carrier could make! PTSI is in partnership with Conestoga college developing and delivering Transportation Training solutions. If you or anyone you know is in need of help in these areas please give us a call at either Conestoga College @ 1 519 748 5220 xt 2456 ask for Shawn DeBruyn or PTSI @ 1 647 232 7874 ask for Reg Emerson

Commercial Vehicle Wheel Service (CVWS) Training Program

hrough the joint efforts of the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) and the Ontario Tire Dealers Association (OTDA), the enhanced Commercial Vehicle Wheel Service training program is now fully deployed. The revisions build on the program that was initially launched in 1996. The Commercial Vehicle Wheel Service training program materials entitled “Practical Tire & Wheel Service” are offered in response to Ontario regulations. The regulation requires all individuals who remove or replace wheels on heavy trucks and truck trailers, having a manufacturer’s gross weight rating of 9,000 kg or higher and all motor coaches to be certified. All certificates issued since 1996 remain valid. Persons who wish to take refresher training can also attend the revised training courses. The certification training program consists of 17 learning modules and allows individuals to become certified at one of four different levels. These levels are based on the specific needs of the individual and based on the job tasks each person is required to perform. Each of the basic certification levels are very limited in scope and are intended for drivers and other individuals who must perform certain job functions as listed below. The advanced stream is designed for tire service technicians - people who perform tire service work as a primary part of their job function. • Basic I. – Inflation (Modules 1-3) Appropriate for drivers

and other individuals whose job descriptions require them to reinflate tires, but not to perform any other work related to tires or wheels. • Basic II. – Inflation & Checking (Modules 1-5) Appropriate for drivers and other individuals whose job descriptions require them to re-inflate tires and/or perform checks of wheel fastener security, but not to perform any other work related to tires or wheels. • Basic III. – Remove and Replace (Modules 1-9) Appropriate for drivers and other individuals whose job descriptions require them to remove and replace mounted tire and rim assemblies on their vehicles. • Advanced – Service Technician (Modules 1-17) Appropriate for individuals whose job descriptions involve removal and replacements of tires and wheels from vehicles, tire de-mounting and mounting, and tire repairs. To become certified an individual must attend the appropriate level of training delivered by a qualified Instructor and successfully complete the knowledge test. To inquire about training, to register, or to obtain a list of qualified Instructors, please contact, OTDA @ 866-375-6832 or OTA @ 416-249-7401.

Yokohama Tire Corporation Launches Online Fuel Savings Calculator for Commercial Fleet Owners Y

okohama Tire Corporation has launched an interactive, online-based tool on its Web site that will enable commercial fleet owners to learn how they can improve their bottom line in terms of gas savings. Called the Yokohama Fuel Savings Calculator, the interactive tool performs a side-by-side comparison of Yokohama’s fuel-efficient tires against competitors. The savings are shown in three ways, which are the Annual Fuel Savings per Truck, Annual Fuel Savings for Fleet and Annual Gallons of Fuel Saved. “The Fuel Savings Calculator is specifically designed for fleet owners to see how much they can improve their bottom line by using our truck tires,” said John Cooney, Yokohama director of sales,

Commercial Division. In addition, the Fuel Savings Calculator shows the total reduction of carbon footprint with the use of Yokohama tires. “Besides the pure monetary savings, there’s also a ‘green’ benefit to the calculator,” said Cooney. “With fleets being more environmentally focused, it’s important for them to see how the right choice of tires can dramatically reduce the carbon impact on the environment. For example, a comparison between Yokohama tires and a competitor’s shows more than 2,000 pounds of CO2 saved from being released into the atmosphere via gallons of fuel saved. It’s another example of our commitment to produce environmentally-sound products.”

Canada, “My wife is a software expert but I’m into the media line which is not so well-paying abroad. So I’ve signed up for Yoga classes and for the next three months I’ll perfect my asanas, so that I can make some money when we finally move.”

THE GLASS CEILING: Mandira Bedi dazzles in the contemporary diamond jewellery created by MAIA — the soon to be launched fine jewellery store in Khar

On keeping a low profile of late:

My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working

on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.

Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.

What went wrong down south?

I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.

It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.

Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

OUT OF ACTION? Actor Nagma

End of her political career? When the controversy

erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.

Personal relationships not working out:

I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to.” The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft.” Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

Custom Made Orthotics – Give your feet a break

ello everyone! I hope you are all enjoying the summer and staying cool. This month I am going to discuss custom made orthotics as I have had many questions pertaining to them in my clinic recently. Well, let’s get started! Before we talk about orthotics let’s talk a little bit about our feet. It is important to understand that your feet have direct impact on the rest of your body and support you with each step. Any small abnormality or disturbance in your feet can have a significant impact on the rest of the body causing pain and discomfort. When you are running, the pressure or force on our feet increases by three to four times your body weight. It is estimated by researchers that the average person takes 8-10 thousand steps a day. This will add up to about 115 thousand miles in a life time or more than four times the circumference of the globe! In addition, 25% of the bones in our body are located in our feet. Our feet are made up of a complex system of 52 bones, 66 joints, 214 ligaments, and 38 muscles and tendons. It should be no surprise to you to hear that 75% of the general population will experience foot problems of varying degrees at some point in their lives. As you can see, our feet are actually a very delicate and complex system. Therefore, it is very important for us to protect them by selecting the proper footwear. The best way to do that is to consult with an expert for the best

brand and model for your particular foot. Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind when you are selecting your shoe. When shopping for shoes make sure you go in the afternoon as feet tend to swell throughout the day. Also, bring the proper socks for the style of shoe you are buying and if applicable, bring your custom made orthotics. Shoe sizes vary based on shoe make and style, hence do not always assume you will have the same sized shoe every time. Alright, now that we know a little bit about our feet, let’s now talk about custom made orthotics. Custom orthotics are corrective devises made to assist a foot that has failed biomechanically. Orthotics are made to control abnormal function, reestablish proper weight distribution and improve overall biomechanics. Many biomechanical complaints such as heel pain, arch pain, shin pain, achilles pain, flat feet, knee pain, and lower back pain are caused by poor foot function. Therefore, orthotics realign the foot and ankle bones to their neutral (natural) position, thereby restoring natural foot function. Custom orthotics are made using a state of the art manufacturing system. After your clinician has performed a postural and gait evaluation, a neutral position foot mold is taken. This mold is then sent to a lab where a positive cast is produced. This positive cast is made out of thermal plastics, which are vacuum heat molded to increase strength and durability. In my clinic, the most common

question I am asked about orthotics is “I don’t feel any pain in my foot. Do I need orthotics?” The reality is many clinical conditions present without any obvious foot problems. Subtle imbalances in the foot are amplified as they go up the leg, knee, hip and back resulting in problems that may not have been properly assessed due to lack of biomechanical evaluation. So as you can see, most people can benefit from orthotics. Even if you do not suffer from any obvious foot pain, you may have some biomechanical problems later in life if left untreated. How long do orthotics last? With everyday use, under normal conditions, you should get between one to three years of correction from your custom made orthotics. Orthotic type, age, weight, and activity will play an important role in this issue. Well, that’s all I want to say about orthotics. I hope this has answered most of your questions about this topic. If you do have any further questions, please feel free to contact me or your health care professional. Until next month, be good to your feet and drive safely!
