elcome to the June 2010 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing face of the trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make a good read. At the very outset, a big THANK YOU to all volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors, dignitaries and above all the trucking industry enthusiasts for coming out to the annual Road Today Truck Show. It was an event made possible by the encouraging support from all of you. The truck show season is moving ahead with Stirling Truck Show lined up for the Father’s Day weekend followed by Fergus Show held every fourth weekend in July. Mark your calendars and don’t forget to meet the Road Today team at these shows. By driving defensively and being on the lookout for impaired, speeding and other dangerous drivers, everyone can help keep Ontario’s roads and waterways safe. The number of drinking drivers involved in fatal crashes is about 60 per cent higher during the summer months. The number of speeding drivers involved in fatal collisions also jumps
“
this time of year, by about 30 per cent. Let’s do our part to make our lives safer by driving sensibly. As a part of our ongoing participation under the Road Safety Challenge, we have compiled few safety tips on ‘Impaired Driving’ and ‘Distracted Driving’ in this edition. Please have a look. Ontario law requires motorists who see the flashing lights or hear the sirens of an approaching emergency vehicle pull to the right and stop the moment it is safe to do so. Every second counts when emergency vehicles, such as police cars, fire trucks and ambulances are rushing to respond to calls for help - any delay can be critical for emergency responders and those who urgently need them. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Good Morning Today’ our award winning weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am for latest trucking and transportation news, laws and regulations. Do send us your valuable feedback and suggestions, as improvement is a continuous process. Drive safe and remember, road safety starts with you! Manan Gupta Editor

Navistar Officially Unveils eStar, Its First Purpose-Built All-Electric Commercial Truck
N
while ensuring FedEx the reliability necessary to meet our commitment for superior customer service.” The eStar all-electric truck transitioned from concept to reality in August 2009, when US President Barack Obama visited Navistar’s manufacturing plant in Indiana to announce a $39.2 million federal stimulus grant to build electric trucks. Less than one year later, Navistar has completed testing and validation, developed and delivered prototype vehicles, and received EPA and CARB certifications. Unlike other electric trucks that are reconfigured models of fossil-fuel trucks, the eStar truck has been purpose-built for electric power, creating an advantage with a low center of gravity (the battery is between the frame rails, not mounted on top) and a 36-foot turning radius. The eStar is engineered with superior aerodynamics, a walk-through cab and a quick-change cassette-type battery that can be swapped out in 2 0 minutes, enabling around the clock operation. It is capable of carrying payloads up to two tons. With zero tailpipe emissions, each eStar truck can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 10 tons annually. Drivers will be able to experience the ultimate in ergonomic design as the windshield provides nearly 180-degree visibility, the low-floor design provides easy loading/unloading and the noise level is nearly non-existent, which makes this nimble vehicle ideal for urban areas facing noise challenges.
avistar has announced that it will deliver to FedEx the first full-production eStar—Navistar’s all-electric commercial truck. The company is currently taking orders for the eStar and intends to deliver 400 units by the end of 2010. The eStar all-electric truck is the first medium-duty commercial vehicle to receive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification as a clean fuel fleet vehicle as well as California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification as a zero emissions vehicle. This Class 2c-3 electric truck—the first in its category—has a range of 100 miles per charge, making it ideal for many urban applications. When it returns to its home base at the end of the day, it can be plugged in and fully recharged within 6-8 hours. “For businesses, municipalities and other organizations that demonstrate their environmental commitment, the eStar provides them with a smart option,” said Shane Terblanche, general manager, electric vehicles, Navistar. “We have brought the eStar to market to meet the needs of responsible customers who strive to have a positive impact on the environment through energy efficiency.” FedEx showcased a prototype of the eStar electric truck during “Charge Up Route 66” tour that began in Chicago and ended in Los Angeles as part of the Fortune Brainstorm Green Conference. FedEx will evaluate the performance of the eStar vehicle in its fleet as it operates in the Los Angeles area. “FedEx is continually looking to connect the world more responsibly,” said Mitch Jackson, Vice President of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability at FedEx. “Navistar’s purpose-built electric truck has the potential to assist in making our business more environmentally sustainable and reduce dependence on foreign oil,

Daimler Trucks North America Offers Exceptional Customer Value Through Extended Partnership with Allison Transmission

Penske Truck Leasing Selects Freightliner Cascadia for EPA 2010 Solution Company Orders 750 Freightliner Cascadia Tractors Equipped with BlueTec Selective Catalytic Reduction Emissions Technology
aimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has extended its partnership with Allison Transmission through a multi-year, long-term agreement. Allison Automatics will be the exclusive automatic transmission installed in all DTNA product lines, including: Freightliner, Western Star, Freightliner Customer Chassis and Thomas Built Buses, and will work in conjunction with engines from DTNA’s sister company, Detroit Diesel Corporation. The formal partnership provides superior engine/transmission integration in areas such as fuel efficiency and future product offerings. The partnership with Allison Transmission continues to differentiate DTNA brands from its competitors. “Allison Automatics are the benchmark in the medium and heavy-duty truck industry,” said Mark Lampert, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Daimler Trucks North America. “Our commitment to Allison Transmission provides exceptional transmission performance and value to our customers and will strengthen our competitive position.” Freightliner Trucks and Western Star Truck Sales, Inc. recently announced plans to release Allison Optimized packages across a variety of vocational vehicles. Allison Optimized packages offer a holistic approach to configuring a vehicle’s driveline that delivers the best combination of performance, reliability, durability, fuel efficiency and driveline protection for a specific vocation/duty cycle, all within a streamlined spec’ing process.
Freightliner Trucks has announced that Penske Truck Leasing has ordered 750 Freightliner Cascadia tractors equipped with BlueTec selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions technology. This purchase makes Freightliner Trucks the majority supplier of 2010 EPA-compliant tractors to Penske Truck Leasing. Penske Truck Leasing offers commercial and consumer truck rentals, full-service leasing, contract maintenance, transportation and supply chain management solutions to individuals, small companies and multinational organizations. Its order includes 50 Cascadia 113-inch single-axle day cab tractors equipped with Detroit Diesel DD13 engines; 450 Cascadia 125-inch tandem-axle day cab tractors equipped with DD13 engines; and 250 Cascadia 125” tractors with a 72-inch raised roof and Detroit Diesel DD15 engines. Penske Truck Leasing customers have also ordered an additional 132 Freightliner Business Class M2 106 trucks with SCR-equipped Cummins engines and 50 Cascadia tractors to-date, equipped with a combination of Cummins ISX, DD13 and DD15 engines. The aerodynamic Cascadia was specially designed to incorporate EPA 2010 emission engines. BlueTec emissions technology – Daimler’s solution for meeting the 2010 EPA emissions standards – reduces emissions to near-zero levels of NOx and particulate matter as measured at the tailpipe and increases fuel economy by up to five percent over other emission treatment systems.

Impaired Driving I
mpaired driving, which means driving while your ability is affected by alcohol or drugs, is a crime under the Criminal Code of Canada. If convicted, you calose your licence, be fined, or spend time in jail. Your vehicle does not even have to be moving; you can be charged if you are impaired behind the wheel, even if you have not started to drive. Drinking and Driving Drinking and driving is a deadly combination. One drink can reduce your ability to concentrate and react to things that happen suddenly while you are driving. The more alcohol in your blood, the more difficulty you have judging distances and reacting to sudden hazards on the road. To make matters even worse, your vision may become blurred. Drugs and Driving Any drug that changes your mood, or the way you see and feel, will affect the way you drive. This is not only true for illegal drugs. There are prescription drugs and some over-the-counter drugs that can also impair your driving ability.
cation or get allergy shots. • Read the information on the package of any over-the-counter medicine, including allergy and cold remedies. • Drugs and alcohol together can combine to impair your driving even more drastically; ask your doctor or pharmacist. Remember, fatigue and stress will also affect your ability to drive. Convicted Impaired Drivers If you drive impaired, and your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is more than 0.08, or you fail or refuse to comply with alcohol or drug testing, you can be convicted under the Criminal Code. Individuals convicted for impaired driving offences face penalties under the Canada’s Criminal Code and Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act. Upon conviction, consequences include additional suspension period, alcohol education and treatment programs, Ignition Interlock Program and fines. Driving-related Criminal Code convictions remain on a driver’s record for at least 10 years.

AeroFlex Fairings from Carrier Transicold Improve Trailer Efficiency A
Another EcoDriven Solution
eroFlex fairings, which have demonstrated up to a 7.5 percent improved fuel economy for tractor-trailer rigs, are now available from Carrier Transicold’s North American dealer network. Developed by Freight Wing, Inc., AeroFlex trailer side fairings offer the greatest boost to fuel economy of any side fairings on the market, based on independent tests verified against the SAE/TMC J1321 Type II test procedure, according to the manufacturer. A verified EPA SmartWay technology, fairings are now required on many trailers operated in California. Available for standard as well as refrigerated trailers, patent-pending AeroFlex fairings are made of impact-resistant, flexible TPO (thermoplastic olefin) plastic that maintains a good appearance over the long haul. The material is UV stabilized for prolonged outdoor use. The flexibility of the material, coupled with a 180-degree top hinge, allows the low-clearance fairings to flex and withstand both side and bottom impacts. Reflective of their exceptional durability, AeroFlex fairings have a three-year limited warranty, backed by Carrier’s coast-to-coast dealer network. Weighing only 160 pounds, AeroFlex fairings can be installed in a 5-degree angled configuration. This “wedge” configuration more efficiently diverts airflow along the side of the trailer, away
from drag-inducing rear wheels, axle components and cross members. Designed for ease of installation, the fairings can easily be modified to accommodate under-trailer fuel tanks in refrigerated trailer installations. In 2007, Carrier Transicold became the first nationwide distributor of Freight Wing’s original aluminum “gap” and side fairings, products the company continues to offer.
“AeroFlex fairing installation showing angled “wedge” configuration, which efficiently diverts airflow along trailer sides for optimal fuel savings.”

Driving requires your full attention. M
• • • •
any drivers today tend to view driving, especially in familiar environments, as a simple everyday task that requires minimal attention. In fact, driving is a task that requires your full attention every time you get behind the wheel. At the very least you are: Operating a heavy piece of machinery at high speed Navigating across changing terrain Calculating speeds and distances Responding to other drivers, signs signals and obstacles around you
• Grooming activities • Eating or drinking • Tending to children or pets
Managing distractions is easy. The following are some tips to help reduce driver distraction:
• Make it a habit to use your cell phone only when parked, have a passenger take the call or let the caller go to voice mail. • Before you start driving turn off your cellular phone. • Identify and preset your vehicle’s climate control, radio and CD player. • Attend to personal grooming and plan your route before leaving. • When hungry or thirsty, take a break.
ROAD
Reducing Distractions
There are a number of potential driver distractions and these may include: • Devices such as hand-held cell phones, organizers and lap tops • Reading maps or other material

Owning Your Success
Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.
By Bruce Outridge I came across some startling facts the other day that eight out of ten businesses fail in their first three years and eighty percent fail in their first five. Now those are pretty scary statistics considering the trend right now for people to become entrepreneurs and start their own business. What is the allure of entrepreneurship? Especially for owner operators as Statistics Canada supports the business findings in that eight out of ten owner operators don’t make over $20,000 a year. So, why do it? Being in business for myself now and in the past owning trucks I wanted control of my time and career path. Very rarely is money the only decision making factor for business owners. The equity built up in a truck and the satisfaction of creating a career path you can be proud of can be a main focus for many. My question is, why do some owner operators become successful and others not? The secret is ownership; most guys own their truck like they own a car. You know, just do the miles, make the money, pay the bank and keep the truck. Just like a car; pay the payments and you own the car. No planning, no advise, no process. A friend of mine owned a truck this way, he didn’t plan his business and he didn’t know if he was profitable on a monthly basis or not. He went and bought himself a big fancy truck about a year old. Figuring he had a good warranty program, he didn’t save any money for maintenance or unknown expenses. Instead of putting systems in place, he bought a new pickup truck with his big pay check because some
guy gave him really good advice. He was told if he calls it a “service truck” he could write it off. The problem with advice like that is you still have to pay the payments for the pickup truck. So he continued to go down the road and then, it happened, he got star struck. What’s star struck you asked? That’s when you look at a guy’s map book and the pages are torn out from “M” to “Z” because he doesn’t run New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania. Of course, I understand California is much farther than New York, but guys get comfortable only running west. Owner operators need to go where the money is no matter which direction. Like all areas of trucking areas get slow now and then and that’s what happened. Because my friend wasn’t flexible, things got tight and he ended up losing his truck. Well, if everyone operated that way there would be no owner operators. What makes some guys successful? I got thinking of my other friend who has been very successful. He started the same way as a good driver; a company was starting an owner operator division and asked him to be a part of it. Now, he didn’t know about business so he asked for some advice. He was told to develop a business plan, buy a decent truck. The business plan also showed him he needed systems in place such as bookkeeping, accounting and a place to get ongoing business advice. I remember his first truck was about three years old and he had it for another three years. I believe the only thing he replaced
on the truck was an alternator. Horse shoes or what! Today he has been an owner operator for about 25 years and is planning his retirement. Yeah right! I have been hearing that for the last three years. He has however, bought a house in Florida, successfully operated a business consisting of two trucks as a mini fleet, and most important of all beat the odds of business failure. I ask you which percentage you will be in, the eighty percent or the twenty percent. I know for my businesses I am focused on the twenty percent even better the top ten percent. You can choose the eighty percent but of course you know the outcome. There are systems to help you such as the ATBS system or the old way, ledger books! The choice is yours. I wish you luck and success as you start your owner operator journey. Remember, run it like a business and let it take care of you; run it like a purchase and you will have to take care of it. Until next time! Bruce

or less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers the search continues everyday for loads to fill up empty spaces in the trailer. Truckload (FTL) carriers that have agreements with shippers and freight brokers also need to find backhaul loads. The various sources for obtaining freight include - manufacturers and shippers, freight
brokers, freight matching load boards, as well as load monitors at truck stops. Freight matching services: There are a number of companies offering varying levels of services. The established ones create an online community of brokers and carriers that provide real-time leads, profiles on the companies that are posting, credit bureau reports on members and membership discount programs with third party suppliers to the industry. When the freight matching is integrated with dispatch and other operation management processes, it saves valuable time and money. The most crucial benefit is the data available on each company so you make an informed decision whether to conduct business with the other party or not. How can I generate more leads, greater revenue and higher profit? Create a relationship with key decision makers to identify their buying needs and requirements. Customize your service to match these needs and charge accordingly. This is the key to retaining your existing customers and getting more business from them.

Do not rely on one source of revenue or one customer – diversify and develop multiple income streams from various customers and markets. Manage your cash flow more effectively. An increasing number of carriers that want to improve cash flow are selling their invoices and accounts receivables to factoring companies. Although this means you get paid quickly (sometimes within 24 hours), you pay a fee for this service. The fee is usually a percentage of the total value of the invoice. The Sales Manager at TransCore Loadlink Freight Matching has suggested the following best practices for posting equipment and loads on freight matching load boards. 1. Enter your equipment as a posting for each lane that you travel and create new postings daily. Alter your posting regularly so you attract your audience’s attention (just like an advertisement). 2. Request additional training and support from your provider to get more leads, generate more revenue, and gain better exposure for your company among your prospects. 3. Actively network with other established members – consider joining trade associations. 4. Provide feedback - both negative and positive, so that improvements can be made to the services they provide. 5. Contact the complaints department should an issue arise. If you have a problem with a company, it is likely that others have had them as well and your provider should have a policy to deal with the offending party. 6. Inquire about any membership benefit program to obtain discounts from merchants and suppliers. 7. Request comprehensive training for your new employees, from the service provider. 8. Do not post negative comments on the system. Contact customer service or the complaints department to notify them of your concerns. 9. Do not post rates – why not? because it gives you the opportunity to make contact, determine specific requirements and charge appropriately for different requirements. 10. Do your due diligence (reference and credit checks) on every new company you are going to be doing business with.

On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to.” The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft.” Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

DEHYDRATION A
s the weather begins to warm up our bodies are required to sweat more, in order to maintain its core body temperature. Thus, physical exertion during the summer months can cause severe water loss. If this water loss is not replenished, it may lead to a very serious condition called dehydration. In this article, I am going to discuss what dehydration is, as well as its causes, symptoms and treatment options. Let’s get started! Dehydration occurs when your body does not have enough water to carry out its normal functions. Anyone can become dehydrated however, children and older adults seem to be more at risk. In order to understand dehydration you must first understand the importance of water to the human body. First and foremost, water is the main constituent of all body fluids such as blood, enzymes and digestive juices. It is also very important in the elimination of waste. The average person loses more than 2.5 liters of water everyday by sweating, breathing and other body processes. In addition to water, your body loses electrolytes such as minerals and salts which play an important role in the maintenance of the fluid balance in the body. In most cases, you can replenish these nutrients through the consumption of foods and liquids. However, if you eliminate more water than you consume, your body will essentially dry out. The most common causes of dehydration include excessive sweating, vomiting and intense diarrhea. Basically, anything that

By Dr. Christoper H. Singh causes the body to lose excessive amounts of water can lead to dehydration. Other causes such as increased urination which is associated with diabetes and severe burns are less common. The symptoms of dehydration are fairly easy to recognize. In mild cases, you will experience a dry, sticky mouth, thirst, headaches, dizziness or light headedness and muscle weakness. As the condition worsens, you will notice an increase in the previously mentioned symptoms as well as a lack of sweating and urination, sunken eyes, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure and loss of elasticity of the skin. Severe dehydration can lead to serious complications such as kidney failure, seizures, swelling of the brain and shock. The good news is that in most causes of mild to moderate dehydration, drinking fluids regularly will solve the problem. However, it is vital to consult a physician if you experience any of the severe signs of dehydration as this condition can be fatal. As I always say, “Prevention is the best cure.” So during these summer months when you are driving down the highway or working outside around your truck, make sure to drink plenty of water. Try to remember that thirst is not a good indicator of your body’s hydration level. A better gauge is the color of your urine. If it is clear and light, then you are well hydrated but if it is dark yellow or amber it indicates that your body needs more water. Well, I hope you found this article interesting and informative. Until next month, drive safely.
