The Canadian Trucking Alliance has a detailed list of celebration ideas, which is reproduced on page 16. Please have a look. Poor road conditions can cause costly wear and tear on your vehicle. And that's not all - they put your safety at risk. They're bad for the environment. And they can affect your insurance rates. According to

Transport Canada, over 350 fatalities and 25,000 injuries each year can be directly related to poor roads. We encourage our readers to vote for the worst road or bridge in their community by logging onto www. worstroads.ca until September 30, 2009. Worst Roads - It's in your hands Campaign ends on Sep 30th
T
he seventh annual Worst Roads campaign kicked off in August with a plea to Ontarians to tell their municipal politicians to fix their aging roads, bridges and highways. "If you've ever found yourself in the position where you're upset about a road, whether you're a motorist, a cyclist or a pedestrian this is your chance to voice your concern," said Faye Lyons, External Affairs Specialist for CAA South Central Ontario. Ontarians are asked to vote for the worst road or bridge in their community by logging onto www.worstroads.ca until September 30, 2009. Ballots can also be cast at CAA travel stores, CAA Car Care Centres and in select CAA approved garages. The campaign launch was held on Steeles Avenue, last year's Worst Roads winner. The road has appeared on the Top 20 list for six years and has yet to be fixed. This year a campaign theme of 'It's in Your Hands' was announced. "The theme was chosen to show Ontarians their voice has made and will continue to make a difference on improving the state of our roads," said Lyons. To date, over 90 per cent of the roads that have made the Top 20 list have been or are in the process of being fixed. The
campaign has also helped generate $ 400 million for infrastructure from the province and $ 1.9 billion from the federal government. A Worst Roads grocery list was also introduced at the launch event. On average the cost of time delays, vehicle operating costs, accidents, vehicle emissions, CAA membership, vehicle repairs, commuting delays, work compensation, and health care costs associated with excess congestion and hitting a pothole amounted to over $3000 per person each year (based on statistics for a person living in Toronto). In addition to pressuring municipalities to access infrastructure dollars, this year's Worst Roads campaign was extended to also include highways and bridges. "Potholes, sinkholes, fissures and cracks in the pavement, congestion, and pieces of concrete falling from our overpasses, poorly designed streets, bridges to narrow for vehicles and pedestrians to share safely, are all examples of bad roads," said Rob Bradford, Executive Director of the Ontario Road Builders' Association. The campaign, sponsored by CAA and the Ontario Road Builders' Association, will take its message across Ontario during the seven-week campaign visiting 30
What is a ‘Worst Road’? A ‘Worst Road’ is any stretch of paved infrastructure, including bridges, meant for any type of vehicle that shows severe deterioration and/or a stretch of road that is designed in a way that may cause increased traffic, frequent accidents, and congestion which could potentially endanger drivers and pedestrians. Basic Facts About Bad Roads Poor road conditions can cause costly wear and tear on your vehicle. And that's not all - they put your safety at risk. They're bad for the environment. And they can affect your insurance rates. Some of the basic facts related to bad roads are as follows: • Over 350 fatalities and 25,000 injuries each year can be directly related to poor roads, according to Transport Canada. • More than 80 per cent of foreign multinational executives believe Canada's poorly maintained infrastructure adversely affects investors. • The Ontario Chamber of Commerce says congestion costs Southern Ontario $2 billion each year. • Congested roads lead to idling vehicles, which produce 77 per cent more greenhouse gas emissions than vehicles not caught on congested roads. • Every 10 minutes of idling costs at least one-tenth of a litre in wasted fuel.

What does it take to become an Owner-operator? By Melroy Coelho
C
lose to 35,000 Canadians experience the challenge of owning and operating their trucking business. Defined, an owner-operator is a self employed commercial truck driver that either works for a commercial carrier or on his own authorities transporting goods across the nation. If they subcontract themselves to a carrier, they are typically compensated on a mileage basis – which is usually higher than what a company driver would get paid. When they operate on their authorities, they obtain freight from shippers, freight brokers or from a load matching service. The Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council recommends that anyone wishing to become an owner-operator gain experience as a company driver and then take business courses to assist in the overall management aspect of being a business owner. The CTHRC offers a series of online courses to teach owner-operators basic business skills. I asked Kim Richardson of K.R.T.S. Transportation Specialists Inc. (Kim is an employer, truck driving school business owner, trucking industry veteran as well as guide and mentor to new entrants to the industry) and Jayne Gunn of Sunbury (Jayne is the
recruiting specialist at Sunbury and the current president of The Brantford Traffic Club. She is heavily involved with the Ontario Commercial Driver Apprenticeship Program and the Career Path Round Table for Transportation) for their expert opinions as a guideline for new O/Op’s. Q. What words of wisdom or advice do you have for anyone considering entering the transportation Industry? Jayne - Do your research. Choose a school that will set you up to succeed and trains to industry standards, not to just pass the Ministry of Transportation road test. (I am a huge advocate for PTDI training standards.) Ensure you understand the lifestyle of the industry and that all family members "buy into" the life you will lead. Kim - Where else can you go with zero knowledge of an industry and in six weeks enter your new career with potential earning of $40,000 - $60,000 in your first year? Some of the brightest and most successful people in our business all started in the same spot- the driver’s seat. Q. What are you looking for in a potential job hire? Jayne - Sunbury’s minimum requirements are two (2) years

cross border experience as well as a FAST card, 2005 or newer model tractor, clean CVOR and driver’s abstract as well as solid employment history. Kim - We hire attitude, you can have the greatest credentials in the world but without the right attitude towards your career and the industry, you are dead in the water. Q. What does it take to become a profitable and successful owner-operator? Jayne - You have to also be a business person now in order to succeed so I would recommend some type of either training or to align themselves with a company like ATBS Canada Inc. (provides specialised business services to owner-operators) to ensure success. Kim - A good knowledge of the business side of trucking and the willingness to learn that side of trucking. A good business plan with goals and objectives and an understanding of the customer. Professionalism, good working equipment and appearance is important. Q. When you have two potential job candidates of similar ability and experience level, what factors will tip the balance in favour of one candidate over the other? Jayne - If one doesn't have a FAST card that would be a deciding factor. If they both had FAST cards, it would come down to the interview, or I would hire the both of them. Kim - We look at the job history number one. Has the candidate done some jumping? How long does he/she stay with company? Again, attitude and willingness to grow is critical. Which candidate best matches the company culture? Our core value is people. Does the candidate like people and communicating with
people? How does the candidate view quality, service and reputation? This is how we built our brand. At KRTS it important our associates keep their eye on the ball and want to become the best of the best. For information and to learn more about the industry, please visit some of the following websites www.Truckingcareers.ca - Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council site that provides comprehensive information on the Canadian trucking industry www.Driverlink.com - Valuable resource for information on truck driving training schools, trucking companies hiring Owner operators, directory of truck stops across North America and for company drivers looking for employment. www.Loadlink.ca - If you are not signed on with a Carrier for regular runs, finding freight is another important aspect of the daily routine of the business. Getting freight from an established, reliable provider is a proven resource to reduce deadhead miles (running without cargo). Melroy Coelho is the product marketing

Kenworth Introduces Additional Sleeper Option For Kenworth C500 Vocational Model
38-Inch AeroCab FlatTop Sleeper Now Available
K
enworth Truck Company has added its 38-inch AeroCab FlatTop sleeper as an option for the Kenworth C500 vocational model. The tough, durable Kenworth C500 is designed to handle
heavy loads over punishing terrain and is ideal for the severest applications, including heavy haul, oilfield services, coal mining and construction. Kenworth’s 38-inch AeroCab FlatTop sleeper enhances the C500, providing additional space for customers that may need to log time in the sleeper berth while waiting on job sites but cannot sacrifice the length. The compact sleeper allows the C500 to remain highly maneuverable with more driver comfort and versatility than a day cab configuration. The compact 38-inch AeroCab sleeper offers plenty of headroom, a liftable bunk with a 24-inch by 78-inch tilt up mattress, over and under bunk storage, a full headliner, insulated rubber floor mats, vented access doors, swivel reading light, lockable luggage compartments and a separate sleeper control console. The sleeper is available with Kenworth’s Splendor interior. The Kenworth C500 also is available with a standard day cab, 42-inch FlatTop sleeper, and Kenworth Extended Day Cab. The spacious Kenworth Extended Day Cab enhances driver comfort with an additional 6 inches of length and 5 inches of cab height compared to Kenworth’s traditional day cab. The Extended Day Cab also offers 2 more inches behind the wheel, additional leg room, up to 21 degrees of recline in the driver’s seat, and 2 extra cubic feet of storage behind the driver’s seat.

New Vocational Truck & Equipment Expo to run Concurrently with Truck World
T
ruck World is the largest trade show in Canada for all those involved in the economically vital transportation industry. The 2010 edition will be held at the International Centre in Toronto from April 15th to 17th. The show is owned and produced by Newcom Business Media Inc., Canada’s leading trucking media company. A new exhibit area will run alongside Truck World, adding an entirely new element to this already powerful trade event. Endorsed by the Canadian Transportation Equipment Association (CTEA), the Vocational Truck & Equipment Expo will have a dedicated section in Halls 4 and 4A, and is expected to attract at least fifty major exhibitors. “Adding the Vocational Truck & Equipment Expo at the same time as Truck World is perfect for the industries. There is so much exhibitor and visitor crossover that everyone will agree this marriage makes perfect sense. No one wants a second, separate show, but it’s obvious that Canada was missing a vocational truck and equipment exposition. This arrangement allows exhibitors and visitors to maximize their savings and time. Newcom is looking forward to working with the CTEA and building a great show in the years to come”, said Joe Glionna, Director of Newcom Shows. The event will attract 20,000 industry professionals from across Canada and the USA. They will meet and do business with hundreds of exhibitors on a spectacular 300,000+ sq. ft. exhibit floor. Exhibitors will feature the latest in trucks, trailers, heavy duty parts and
accessories, engines and power train components, service shop equipment and supplies, tires, fuels, financial services, and many other products and services used in the trucking industry. The show attracts transport company owners, fleet managers and drivers, owner / operators, managers and purchasing agents, service shop owners, private carriers, garage personnel, government transport officials and heavy duty parts jobbers. “Truck World is a premier event and provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the Canadian Transportation Equipment Association. The CTEA brings an exciting new flavour to the event since our members truly shine when it comes to specialized truck and trailer equipment”, said Don Moore, Executive Director of the CTEA. Up-to-the-minute information on Truck World / Vocational Truck & Equipment Expo is available at www.truckworld. ca. Information on the Canadian Transportation Equipment Association is at www.ctea.ca.

Navistar First OEM to Reach 5 Million Hybrid Miles Success with Energy-Efficient Hybrid Trucks and Buses Paves the Way for Future Opportunities
T
he number of owners and operators of Navistar’s hybridpowered commercial vehicles is growing as hybrid trucks and buses become more and more attractive to businesses looking to “green” their fleets and improve fuel economy. In fact, the popularity of these hybrid vehicles has helped Navistar become the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to accumulate more than 5 million real world miles in the hands of customers driving hybrid-powered International trucks and IC Bus brand school and commercial buses. “With a wide range of hybrid trucks and buses, we continue to be a leader in providing energy-saving, environmentally friendly transportation solutions,” said Jack Allen, president, Navistar’s North American truck group. “By developing clean vehicle technologies that reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, we’re able to deliver significant savings to the customer’s bottom line and, at the same time, help them reduce their overall carbon footprint.” In November 2007, Navistar launched the Class 6 medium duty International DuraStar Hybrid, becoming the first OEM to enter assembly line production of hybrid commercial trucks. Building on the success of that platform, Navistar expanded
its hybrid product portfolio in October 2008 with the Class 7 International DuraStar Hybrid Tractor, targeting general freight haulers and food/beverage distributors with diminishing loads. This past March, Navistar introduced the Class 7 severe service International WorkStar Hybrid 4x4, the industry’s first hybrid four-wheel-drive commercial truck. Depending on the specific application and other conditions, International hybrid trucks can deliver up to 40 percent fuel savings in stop-and-go driving and pick-up/delivery operations. Beyond the fuel savings potential, the hybrid trucks produce zero emissions when auxiliary equipment (like an overhead utility bucket) operates solely on the truck’s hybrid battery power.

Market Segmentation - II By Dara Nagra
I
n today’s competitive and recession hit market, it is very important that a company focuses its resources to target its proper market segment. There are different approaches to tackle different market segments: Mass Marketing or Undifferentiated Marketing: Go after the whole market with one offer and focus on common needs rather than differences. Product Variety Marketing or Differentiated Marketing: Target several market segments and design separate offers for each according to segment specific needs. Target Marketing or Concentrated Marketing: Target market is the group of potential customers selected for marketing. For new products, there is a theory that different groups of people have different risk tolerances. Innovators Early Adopters

Innovators and Early Adopters: The innovators and early adopters are critical to launching a new product. If a company can target its initial efforts at these groups, its limited resources will be well spent. They will become its champions. It is not an easy task to find these groups. From some studies, the characteristics of the innovators and early adopters are: Venturesome: the willingness and desire to be daring in trying something new and different Social integration: frequent and extensive contact with others in one’s area
Cosmopolitan: extending point of view beyond the immediate neighborhood or community Social mobility: upward movement on the social scale Privileged: attitude and possession of money (less risky to try something new) But be aware that it is not necessarily a smooth ride to go from one risk group to define a market segment. another. apacity of Texas has introduced the Pluggable Hybrid Electric Terminal Tractor (PHETT) into Canada. The PHETT is the latest evolution of innovative hybrid technology, combining the advantages of scientific and mechanical expertise to reduce emissions and overall carbon footprints. Glasvan Great Dane Sales Inc., the exclusive Capacity dealer in Ontario, Canada officially launched the truck by organizing a well attended open house on August 25th, 2009 at its headquarters in Mississauga. "We are pleased to provide this one of a kind technology in the Terminal Truck Industry for our many customers," stated George Cobham, CEO, Glasvan Great Dane Sales Inc. "As a leader in the terminal tractor industry, we are pleased to offer our Pluggable Hybrid Electric Terminal Tractor. Capacity of Texas is dedicated to environmental stewardship by offering products with the latest technology in green propulsion. This product will change
perceptions, reduce operational expense and emissions at all Ports, Intermodal Yards and Warehousing/Distribution Centers not only in North America, but throughout the world," stated Phillip Ford, President of Capacity of Texas. The PHETT is a charge sustaining series hybrid that utilizes a constant and efficient rate generator to supply power, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. In third party testing conducted at several locations, fuel consumption was reduced an average of 50%. The most significant reductions were in emissions, a decrease of NOx by 77% and PM by 82% compared to a baseline 2002 diesel engine study conducted by the Port of Long Beach. In comparison to a 2009 (tier 3) engine, a reduction in NOx by 39% and PM by 53% was achieved with this technology. With the lowest operational cost per hour, the PHETT also incorporates an AC traction motor and on board grid charging system. Integration and introduction of this technology into ROAD TODAY l SEP 2009

Kenworth Earns 2009 J.D. Power and Associates Customer Satisfaction Awards Over The Road, Pickup and Delivery, and Dealer Service Honors
K
enworth Truck Company achieved the highest ranking in customer satisfaction among Class 8 truck owners in the Over the Road, Pickup and Delivery (P&D), and Dealer Service segments, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Heavy Duty Truck Customer Satisfaction Study released last month. The annual study ranks customer satisfaction by evaluating manufacturer performance in the areas of vehicle performance, quality, cost of ownership, warranty, and dealer service. The study is based on interviews with primary maintainers of 2007 model year Class 8 trucks. Kenworth has earned the Over the Road honor five consecutive years, as well as receiving all five Pickup and Delivery awards presented, and three Dealer Service awards. Kenworth has received 16 heavy-duty truck customer satisfaction awards since J.D. Power and Associates initiated the studies in 2003. In the J.D. Power and Associates Heavy Duty Truck Dealer Service segment, Kenworth was ranked the highest for Dealer Facility, Service Quality, Service Delivery, Service Initiation, and Service Advisor categories. “It is a great honor for Kenworth to receive three prestigious 2009 awards from J.D. Power and Associates,” said Bill Kozek, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. The Kenworth dealer network is comprised of more than 300 locations in the United States and Canada. Daimler Trucks North America Announces Pricing For Detroit Diesel BlueTec and Cummins Emissions Technologies to Meet EPA 2010 Standards
D
aimler Trucks North America has announced pricing for meeting EPA2010 standards with its Detroit Diesel BlueTec or Cummins mid-range engine emissions technologies. Emissions technology surcharges for vehicles equipped with Detroit Diesel DD15 and DD16 big bore engines, as well as the medium bore DD13, will be $9,000 per vehicle. A surcharge of $7,300 will be added to vehicles equipped with the Cummins ISC8.3 engine, and a $6,700 surcharge will be added to the price of vehicles equipped with Cummins ISB6.7 engines. The surcharges reflect costs associated with adding selective catalytic reduction (SCR) which has been proven to significantly improve fuel economy compared to EPA 2007 engines while reducing long-term operating costs and meeting the stringent, near zero emission standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that take effect January 1, 2010. "SCR is the only emissions technology in decades proven to be as good for business as it is for the environment," said Martin Daum, president and CEO, Daimler Trucks North America. "Daimler Trucks North America and Detroit Diesel lead the North American trucking industry in both the research and development of SCR technology and the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) infrastructure to support it. Our decade of commitment
to this technology as a vertically integrated chassis and engine manufacturing company has allowed us to contain design and development costs. Most importantly, we're pleased to deliver a proven solution that gives our customers a return on their emissions technology investment." SCR is an emissions technology that treats NOx emissions downstream in the exhaust so that the engine can be tuned to run more efficiently and economically. SCR technology consists of an after-treatment catalyst system that allows engine exhaust to be treated with a non-hazardous fluid known as diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) that reduces harmful NOx into simple nitrogen and water. Advanced electronic engine controls link the elements of the system to make SCR a convenient and economical solution for vehicle owners and drivers. And since virtually no base engine changes are needed for SCR to work, service technicians will also find no engine maintenance changes for EPA2010. "SCR is the only technology that will provide significant fuel savings to our customers," said Mark Lampert, senior vice president of sales for Daimler Trucks North America. "In fact, customers are reporting up to a 5 increase in miles per gallon with BlueTec-equipped EPA 2010 test engines hauling freight today.

No WSIB Rate Hike for Trucking in 2010 But Warehousing and Couriers get Rate Hikes
Avaal moves ahead with 40th successful batch
T
he Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board has released its preliminary rates for 2010, giving employers advance notice of what they can expect to be paying in premiums next year. For the trucking industry it is a case of good news and bad news. The good news is that despite strong pressure on the WSIB to raise rates to make up for ever worsening financial situation at the Board, the rate for General Trucking (rate group 570) will be unchanged, remaining at its current level of $5.79/$100 of insurable earnings. However, the bad news is that the Warehousing (rate group 560) and Courier Services (rate group 577) will see increases, with Warehousing increasing by almost 5% from $2.64 to $2.77 and Courier Services by 1.2% from $2.43 to $2.46. OTA President David Bradley said that overall the news was better than expected, “We were concerned that given the state of the WSIB’s finances and the fact they have been hit hard in their investment portfolio by the recession that we would see significant rate hikes. While we are disappointed that the warehousing and courier rates jumped up we’re obviously pleased that on the whole the Board has been able to keep rates stable. Though warehousing and courier rates still remains relatively low, less than half the trucking rate, we will be looking into the reasons why these rate groups saw increases this year.” However, Bradley was also quick to warn that fight to keep rates down is far from over, saying, “While we’re obviously pleased that rates are being held down for 2010, the fact that the WSIB’s unfunded liability continues to grow at an alarming rate means that the pressure for rate hikes has in no way diminished and we will have to fight this battle again and again every year. What’s needed is a long term strategy for managing the WSIB’s funding strategy to provide employers with confidence that rates will remain stable.”

Dignity and Distinction By Bruce Outridge
D
ignity or distinction, or is it both? When you’re in the transportation industry those positions may be presented together or separately at any given time or there may be days when both are present at the same time. You may not even know when they’re present, but you should because you control when they are present. You may be asking yourself why this is important, why should you care? Well, it is important and you should care because it is about you! Dignity or distinction is about how you see yourself and how you are seen in the industry. Let’s talk about the distinction part first. Most of us are seen as “truckers” in the eyes of the public. To some that means crazy, grease balled guys out to terrorize the highways. Ask most of the public who don’t understand us and we hog the roads, tailgate, and drive too fast or too slow and are generally disrespectful of people on the road. That’s "distinction" in a negative way. Probably not the kind of distinction we or the industry is in need of at this or any point of time. Now, you and I know that distinction isn’t true. I‘m sure that most people who know you and the trucking industry in general also know how untrue that image is of the industry. The industry is ever changing and that may or may not be positive depending on your view of the industry. But one thing you can count on is that the industry is changing! You can either be a

Just to let you know in case you‘ve been sleeping under a rock or driving in a bubble all by yourself the change has been going on for a while. Canadian Trucking Alliance Supports US Regulatory Proposal to Simplify Insurance Filing Requirements
T
he Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has submitted comments to the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration supporting that agency’s regulatory proposal to simplify the manner in which Canadian insurance companies file information on behalf of their motor carrier clients. Under existing arrangements, Canadian insurers are only allowed to sign proof of financial responsibility forms for motor carriers as an agent of a US insurer, rather than directly. The US and Canadian insurers enter into “fronting arrangements” under which the risks are re-insured back to the Canadian insurance company. While US insurance companies must file a Power of Attorney and Undertaking in order to insure US carriers in Canada, there is no similar requirement to enter into a fronting arrangement with a Canadian insurer. According to the proposal, “it is inappropriate to impose on Canadabased carriers and insurance companies requirements that Canada does not impose on U.S.-based motor carriers and insurance companies.” It goes on to note that “the benefits of this rulemaking are largely the relief of a disproportional cost and administrative burden and inconvenience currently being borne by Canada-domiciled motor carriers in comparison to their U.S. counterparts.” FMCSA estimates that, if adopted, the proposal will lead to a net benefit to Canadian carriers of $273 million over a ten year period. It should be noted that there will be no change in the minimum insurance levels required of Canadian carriers operating in the U.S. The proposal came about following discussions between industry and government, including CTA, on ways to streamline motor carrier insurance procedures. In response to these discussions the Canadian Embassy in Washington submitted a petition to have the US rules changed, and the matter was subsequently identified as a commitment under the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) of North America. Though the matter has taken longer than expected to address – the SPP deadline to complete the changes was June, 2006 – CTA is pleased to note that progress is now being made. “The change being proposed is an example of the so-called low-hanging fruit that initiatives such as the SPP were designed to address in the name of North America prosperity” stated CTA Chief Executive Officer David Bradley. “I have to admit to being frustrated by the pace of reform, but in the end FMCSA has done the right thing and we hope to see a final regulation published in the not too distant future.” 32

Lakshmi Mittal, the steel baron, made the NRI dream a reality when he became the third richest man in the world. Wonder if Mittal would have made it so big had he decided to package the recipe of his favourite mango pickle internationally? Maybe, maybe not. But many enterprising immigrants-tobe, in their quest to make mega bucks abroad, have started learning achaar, chutney recipes as well as the Yoga asanas, even before their visas get the approval stamp. A short-term crash course is all it takes to have the firangis eating out of their hands. Says Raj Suri, a media professional who has applied for immigration to

‘Hindi movies are overrated’
Past allegations of underworld links, controversies down South, her failed relationships and a career in Bhojpuri films. BT gets actor Nagma in the hot seat... Actor Nagma’s not been around for a while. She has been travelling a lot and doing regional movies. BT caught up with the actor...
On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.
OUT OF ACTION? Actor Nagma
End of her political career? When the controversy
erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.
Personal relationships not working out:
I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to.” The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft.” Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

MacKinnon Transport and Walker Group Join Forces to Expand Service Offerings
Arrow Truck Sales presents mega prize to the winner of Road Today Truck Show
M
acKinnon Transport has acquired the St. Thomas, Ontario- based Walker Group of companies, which consists of LE Walker Transport Ltd. and Mid America Freight Systems Ltd. Both companies are major players in the dry van and flatbed marketplaces in North America. The deal creates a combined entity that will operate out of MacKinnon’s head office in Guelph where the company will manage over 1,300 pieces of equipment and employ a workforce of 420 people. “This deal, which is effective immediately, represents a great opportunity for both companies,” said Evan MacKinnon, President and CEO of MacKinnon Transport Inc. “We are merging the best business practices of the Walker Group and MacKinnon Transport,” said Walker Group President Julie Tanguay. The decision to combine the two fleets is welcomed by leaders of both companies who say the move positions them to streamline service delivery and exercise opportunities for increased business growth. Inking the deal means MacKinnon and Tanguay become business partners through their joint ownership of the combined entity. MacKinnon will remain as President and CEO of the organization, which will continue to operate as MacKinnon Transport Inc. Tanguay will take on the newly created role of Executive Vice-President Sales, and will head up sales efforts for the combined fleet from the company's head office in Guelph.

Detroit Diesel Unveils New Two-Year Extended Warranty on Powerpacks Replacement Fuel Injectors
D
etroit Diesel PowerPacks, a set of six reliabilt fuel injectors for Series 60 and MBE 4000 engines, now are available with an extended two-year, 150,000-mile warranty when installed by the experts at authorized Detroit Diesel service outlets. Coupled with Detroit Diesel's reputation for quality and reliability, the new PowerPacks extended warranty offers additional peace of mind and cost savings for owner-operators. "Fuel injectors wear at approximately the same rate, so installing PowerPacks and replacing all six fuel injectors instead of just one will save the owner-operator money in lower labor and parts costs, and reduce down time," said Kelly Gedert, Daimler Engine Product Marketing Manager. "In the long run, replacing all fuel injectors at once as part of a standard maintenance schedule can help avoid costly and time-consuming breakdowns, and improve engine performance." Remanufactured to original equipment specifications, Detroit Diesel reliabilt fuel injectors deliver diesel fuel to cylinders at precisely calibrated pressures and exact timing to prevent diminished performance over time due to normal wear. In addition, Detroit Diesel reliabilt fuel injectors are the only replacement injectors recommended for Series 60 and MBE 4000 engines.

Raghbir Chauhan, who is a professional realtor, SSTV Anchor, Raghbir Chauhan with the 1320 AM Radio Host & was Professor in Sant Longowal Engg. College took it upon himself Anmol Khajana CD to bring to a larger audience the work of his own father who translated the Japji Sahib into a poetic version that is easier to understand for today's generation. Raghbir says, "The translation too was done in poetry form by my late father, S. Nirmal Pathankoti. He took five years to complete the project." It was a great feeling for him to do the project as he held the original work in great reverence and the translation after all was the work of his own father. In the CD, the Japji Sahib voice is rendered by Bhai Karnail Singh while Raghbir’s voice is recorded in poetic version. The CD was recorded by Harry Sandhu. Raghbir says, "The main purpose of recording this in CD form is to reach out to a larger number of younger people so that they can understand and appreciate the meanings of Japji Sahib better." Raghbir says he plans to distribute 10,000 of these CDs free of cost to the people sometime in November to coincide with the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji. Delivery truck A truck driver was driving along on the freeway and noticed a sign that read: low Bridge Ahead. Before he knows it, the bridge is right in front of him and his truck gets wedged under it. Cars are backed up for miles. Finally a police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, “Got stuck, huh?” The truck driver says, “No, I was delivering this bridge and I ran out of gas.”

Whiplash
By Dr. Christopher H. Singh

ello everyone! This month I have decided to talk about a very common neck injury called whiplash. In this article, I will discuss its symptoms, causes as well as its treatment options. Let’s get started. Basically, whiplash is an injury that occurs when the head suddenly moves backwards and then forward under extreme forces. This violent movement causes the soft tissues in your neck such as the muscles and ligaments to be stretched and strained. The good news is that in most cases, people recover within four to six weeks. However, some people may develop chronic pain due to damaged ligaments, disks and joints of the neck. The most common cause of whiplash is a rear ended auto collision. The person in the front vehicle usually is at more risk of whiplash due to the fact that they are often unaware that the collision is about to occur and thus are unable to brace for the impact. Other less common causes of whiplash include amusement park rides and contact sports. The symptoms of whiplash usually occur with in the first week. Symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. However, most people experience neck pain and stiffness, headaches and pain between the shoulder blades. Other symptoms which may occur include dizziness, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, irritability, fatigue and problems

Muscle relaxants may also be extended periods of time can actually impair recovery. helpful in the early stages of injury. Unfortunately, there is no way to One of the most common questions I get asked in my office, is whether to completely prevent whiplash. However, use ice or heat on an injury. The general maintaining good flexibility and muscle rule of thumb is to use ice during the strength in your neck as well as good first few weeks of recovery to help reduce driving habits will help to reduce your inflammation and then to use heat in chances of getting whiplash. Well, I hope you found this article the later stages to relax tight muscles. interesting and informative. If you have Whiplash is no exception to this rule.
