elcome to the March 2011 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. The truck show season is ready to roll out with exciting events lined up through out the spring season. To start with, the Mid America Truck Show will be held later in the month in Louisville, USA, immediately followed by the ExpoCam in Montreal (April 7-9) and then continue with our own show here in Brampton to be held on May 28-29. I would like to encourage all our readers to spare some valuable time and visit these events to keep updated with the latest industry updates. Many of the shows offer free entry to pre-registered visitors, so check out their websites and don’t miss out on the opportunities to network and be well informed. The Red Tape Review Commission, established by the Prime Minister to identify federal regulatory requirements in areas where businesses feel reform is most needed to reduce the compliance burden, especially on small business is a welcome decision. The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) recently appeared at the commission’s roundtable discussion in Toronto and is encouraging all carriers to make their own views known and provide real life examples of where government red tape should be eliminated
or reduced by going to the commission’s website at http://reduceredtape.gc.ca Distracted driving continues to be a major reason for accidents on the roads. A recent oneweek enforcement campaign by the Toronto Police led to more than 2500 charges laid for distracted driving related offences. Readers need to note that it is an offence to operate a motor vehicle at anytime on the roads while using a hand-held entertainment or communication device or viewing a screen that does not have direct relation to the navigation of the vehicle. While the use of BlueTooth technology or wired head-sets are allowed under the distracted driving legislation, people should realize that the true danger to public safety lies in the distraction, not the device. In next few weeks, we will be launching Road Today 360 – 24/7 online tv. This video presentation will bring you latest updates, interviews, and coverage of industry events plus much more. Stay tuned for more updates as we embark upon another glorious chapter and please send us your valuable suggestions. If you want to reach the Road Today team through social media, we are readily available and visible on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. And don’t forget to tune in to ‘Good Morning Today’ our weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial. Drive safe. Always remember: someone back home is waiting for you! Next Generation Waste Haul Tire from Continental
G
reater structural stability and enhanced product performance are the hallmarks of Continental Tire the Americas, LLC’s latest waste haul truck tire, the HSU2+, the company announced last month. The HSU2+ is the next generation of Continental’s heavy truck tire designed for waste hauling and other severe service applications. While the tire incorporates the previous HSU2’s wide tread and shoulder ribs for improved wear, a robust cut- and chip-resistant tread compound and unique tread groove designs to reduce stone retention, a new feature is Continental’s premier “Stable” bead construction, said Roger Stansbie, director of truck tire engineering for the Americas. “The ‘Stable’ bead construction is a new, technologically advanced bead design that incorporates the best that Continental’s engineers have to offer for severe service, construction and other off-road applications,” Stansbie explained. “With the improvements we have made to the bead design, waste haulers and other tough customers will see even longer casing lifetimes and better structural durability with the HSU2+.” The Continental exclusive “Stable” bead features an 18 percent increase in chafer cord density, an increase in the amount of tear-resistant wrap at the chafer and ply edges of the steel cord, an optimized chafer angle for improved stiffness across the body ply of the tire and an extruded sidewall, turn-up cover and rim strip. “For heavy, front axle load applications, the ‘Stable’ bead ensures maximum performance and greater retreadability,” Stansbie said. Continental’s HSU2+ sports an extra-deep 26/32nds of tread depth, as well as 276 millimeters of tread width for greater stability. It is available now in size 315/80R22.5, load range L from authorized Continental truck tire dealers. www.roadtoday.com

TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index Leads 2011 with Record Results
T
ransCore’s Canadian Freight Index recorded the highest load volumes ever posted in the month of January; volumes exceeded the previous record set during the upsurge in 2008 by 4 percent. January postings were up 30 percent over January 2010, while month over month declined by just over a percentage point from the previous month’s record load volumes in December 2010. With loads reaching a peak in January, equipment postings reflected the exact opposite results. Equipment postings descended to the lowest levels for the month in over five years. TransCore’s Loadlink freight matching database constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries and has been available to Canadian subscribers since its inception in 1990. Over 13 million full loads, LTL (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually. As a result of this high volume, TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight movement and provides a historical account of the domestic and cross border spot market freight movement. The Loadlink network provides Canadian based companies with: • Th e largest online database of available loads and trucks • Unlimited access to the network and integrated services • Guaranteed payment

Volvo Trucks Introduces Innovative Lightweight Fifth Wheel System V
olvo Trucks in North America now offers a new fifth wheel option, installed directly into a truck’s frame. The smaller, lighter design preserves ride and drive quality while weighing up to 100 pounds less than current standard-duty fifth wheel systems. Working in conjunction with Fontaine Fifth Wheel on the new system, Volvo Trucks in North America developed a new lower assembly that supports both the fifth wheel and the truck frame. This design allowed engineers to reconfigure the fifth wheel top plate as well, without sacrificing stability, strength or durability. The cast steel top plate weighs just 165 pounds. “Fifth wheel system designs have historically been limited by the need to fit on top of the frame rails – this innovative frame-mount design eliminates unnecessary weight without sacrificing the refined ride and drive characteristics of a Volvo,” said Wade Long, Volvo Trucks marketing product manager. “Reducing vehicle weight lowers fuel consumption, costs and greenhouse gas emissions. We’re committed to providing customers with the safest, most fuel efficient and most environmentally friendly trucks on the road.” The integrated frame-mount system incorporates Fontaine’s top plate lock design that prevents high hitching of the trailer kingpin, as well as a secondary lock. Air actuation with in-cab release – operable only when the parking brake is engaged – is an available option. The new fifth wheel can readily handle a vertical load of 50,000 lbs. and a drawbar pull of 150,000 lbs, which is typical for onhighway applications.
Volvo Trucks’ new integrated fifth wheel system, developed in conjunction with Fontaine, saves up to 100 lbs. over current standard-duty systems. www.roadtoday.com

Grote Introduces CSA Roadside Lighting Repair Kit
G
rote Industries has announced the introduction of the industry’s first advanced, compact, portable Roadside Lighting Repair Kit. The company said the kit was a logical response to the problem of unpredictable lighting and wiring failures that occur in the field. The kit contains 23 of the most practical, commonly used, missioncritical lighting components found in today’s commercial vehicles. The kit has everything a driver needs to make a first-class field repair and make it back to the hub or to the nearest service center– –without a roadside service call, without an error and without an incident. The authorities track approximately 220 CSA violations related to vehicle maintenance. Violations that wreak the most havoc within the CSA scoring system include: driving out of service (level of severity 10), tire defects (level of severity 8), suspension defects (level of severity 7), defective lights (level of severity 6), steering defects (level of severity 6) and brake defects (level of severity 4). Violations leading to an out-of-service order result in a doubling of the point penalty. Vehicle maintenance violations (such as those for lighting defects) will affect a driver’s score for 36 months and a fleet’s score for 24 months. The kit comes complete with 23 of the industry’s most commonly used lighting-related parts: 12 lamps, four styles of pigtails, three unique grommets, two unique brackets, conspicuity tape and a selection of 14-gauge butt connectors. The kit also includes a selection of zip tie fasteners to help stabilize any field repair.

Navistar Reaches Development Agreement with Ecomotors International on Groundbreaking Engine Design
N
avistar International Corporation has announced it has reached a development agreement with EcoMotors International™ in support of the company’s opoc® (Opposed Piston-Opposed Cylinder) engine architecture. EcoMotors International’s first product targeted for commercial application is a turbo-diesel version of the innovative opposed-piston, opposed-cylinder engine. “We continue to be on the cutting edge of technology and our development agreement with EcoMotors once again demonstrates our commitment to develop new, innovative approaches to the commercial vehicle industry,” said Dan Ustian, Navistar chairman, president and chief executive officer. “Our company has a long history of pushing the envelope to deliver state-of-the-art, customerfocused solutions and we see great promise in EcoMotors’ breakthrough engine design.” Khosla Ventures’ Vinod Khosla, EcoMotors primary investor along with Bill Gates, sees the Navistar-EcoMotors alliance as a reflection of the disruptive nature of the opoc technology. EcoMotors’ patented engine design creates a ground-breaking internal combustion engine family architecture that will operate on a number of different fuels, including gasoline, diesel, natural gas and ethanol. The opoc’s new opposed piston-opposed cylinder direct gas exchange operation provides the well known emissions benefits of 4-cycle engines, the simplicity benefits of 2-cycle engines, the power density of the less well known opposed piston engine, and the extraordinary developments in electronics and combustion technology all tied together in a new and proprietary engine architecture. The opoc engine comprises two opposing cylinders per module, with a crankshaft between them— each cylinder has two pistons moving in opposite directions. This innovative design configuration eliminates the cylinder-head and valve-train components of conventional engines, offering an efficient, compact and simple core engine structure. The result is an engine family that is lighter, more efficient and economical, with lower exhaust emissions. EcoMotors’ opoc engine has a number of distinct advantages over traditional internal combustion engines. The opoc engine has very high power density of nearly one horsepower per pound resulting in an unprecedented lightweight and compact engine. The opoc engine is perfectly balanced enabling stackable power modules. This unique modular displacement capability is one of the long standing, but elusive goals of engine engineers’ quest for high efficiency. In addition, it also results in much less NVH than a conventional engine of comparable power. It’s elegantly simple design allows for low cost, efficient www.roadtoday.com
manufacturing and increased operating durability: • 50 percent fewer parts than a conventional engine • Straightforward assembly • No cylinder heads or valve-train • Uses conventional components, materials and processes

Federal Biodiesel Mandate Will Do Little for Reducing GHG
T
he Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) is challenging government claims that its members stand to reduce their carbon footprint in any significant manner through a biodiesel mandate announced by Minister of the Environment Peter Kent and Minister of Agriculture Gerry Ritz. According to CTA, there is strong evidence, including a 2009 study done by EcoRessources Consultants (ERC) for Environment Canada, that shows the environmental impact of a biodiesel mandate in terms of GHG reduction is negligible and certainly outweighed by the costs. According to ERC, the total incremental cost to society of the proposed biodiesel regulation for onroad use would be $4.5 billion between 2011 - 2035, whereas the benefits, in the form of reduced GHG emissions, are valued at only a tad over $860 million. On a regional basis, Western Canada would take the biggest cost hit at about $1.8 billion, followed by Ontario at $1.3 billion and Quebec at more than $450 million. The report makes clear that consumers - the trucking industry and the increasing number of people buying more fuel-efficient diesel powered light-duty vehicles - would ultimately be burdened with the incremental costs of a biodiesel mandate, both in terms of direct costs and by the flow through of the increased costs to the petroleum refining sector, with very little GHG reduction benefit. According to CTA’s CEO, David Bradley, “It’s no wonder other countries are re-thinking their biodiesel policies. Furthermore, under the proposed US heavy-duty truck GHG reduction regulation, which Canada says it will harmonize with, biodiesel isn’t even mentioned as an option for meeting the new standard. If this is about the environment, then it behooves the Minister of the Environment to provide the trucking industry with emission credits for using this product.” “CTA made it clear from the outset,” says David Bradley, “that we are not opposed to the introduction of alternative fuels that could reduce our reliance on oil-based product, so long as it works in our engines, is in plentiful supply, is affordable and won’t impair our engine warranties.” CTA concluded that in a time of rising fuel prices it is frustrating that a government would add cost to hard working businesses with questionable environmental returns as the basis. www.roadtoday.com

CTA and Provincial Trucking Associations Appear Before Red Tape Reduction Commission
T
he Red Tape Review Commission, established recently by the Prime Minister to identify federal regulatory requirements in areas where businesses feel reform is most needed to reduce the compliance burden, especially on small business, is travelling the country holding hearings. And at each stop so far the local provincial trucking association has been on hand to provide input. The commission is made up of both Parliamentarians and private sector representatives, including Denis Prud’homme, former owner of Prud’homme Trucking and past president of the Saskatchewan Trucking Association. The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) recently appeared at the commission’s roundtable discussion in Toronto. The CTA’s submission focused on the ongoing problem of lack of adherence to national standards governing extraprovincial trucking; the increased burden of complying with and the overlapping of border security measures; and the way certain regulations, or the way they are administered, or the lack of meaningful consultation at the early stage of their development impede innovation and competitiveness. Carriers are encouraged to make their own views known and provide real life examples of where government red tape should be eliminated or reduced by going to the commission’s website at http://reduceredtape.gc.ca/index-eng.asp

A DRIVER’S CONTRACT
We have to remember that this is Canada. We have two official languages and many, many, unofficial languages. That is the beauty of Canada. Having said that it is imperative when drawing up a Kevin Snobel is a frequent speaker at Industry Seminars, Driver’s Contract, everything is spelt out. and has been involved in It first and foremost sets out the the Transportation Industry, and taught about the Industry driver’s obligations. At the same time it since 1976. He is presently spells out the company’s obligations. It is employed at Caravan Logistics Inc where he is Director of never as simple as drive from Point A to Safety and Compliance. Point B and we will pay accordingly. All drivers need to know exactly what they will be paid. They need to know if they are paid by the mile, what the company is utilizing to determine the mileage. Is the company utilizing PCMILER current version, or Rand McNally, current version. Is the company paying the same rate if you are loaded or empty, waiting time, etc. Is the company attaching a satellite to your truck if you are an Owner Operator ? If so, are you being charged a fee every month for this service ? Some companies charge $ 100.00 per month for satellite plus they charge to install and take off the satellite when you leave. Are you being charged for the license plates on the truck? Are you being charged for the use and or costs to obtain transponders? If so, how much? Some transponders such as QuikPass and EZPASS are only $10.00 or $20.00 a month Are you
being charged a rental fee for the use of the company’s trailers? (Don’t laugh some companies try to charge the drivers for this). Fuel tax, tickets, penalties for late deliveries, penalties for border delays, of course the list goes on and on. Recently I was in court for an ex driver. He had a contract. The charges the company was charging him were ridiculous. He was being charged for Certified Cheque fees. For what? Administration Fees? Dispatch Fees? C.O.D. Fees etc. and the list goes on and on. Every driver whoever it is must ensure they understand and clarify exactly what they are signing. The contract is the beginning of a relationship. It should clearly define what the driver is expected to do. What the driver will be paid, how the driver will be paid, when the driver will be paid. And of course what deductions are taken off of the driver’s pay. Conversely the company also has to put in the contract exactly what it will deduct. Any deductions, being held by the company that are not in the contract, unless clearly posted and notice given to all drivers, is illegal. Most companies will charge if you are an Owner Operator, and leave within 3 to 6 months an administration fee. This can range from $ 300.00 to $ 1,000.00. Is it in the contract? If so then the deduction is more than justified. Worse yet, the deduction is legal. Why do they charge the owner operator for this ? The cost of licensing a truck is very labor intensive, the preparation of the permit book, the added costs to add your truck onto the existing

fleet insurance, the cost to issue you customs cards, fuel cards, register you with transponders for EZ PASS, QUIK PASS, FAST etc. The whole interview process is time consuming. Issuing you company handbooks, company rules and regulations. All of this costs the company money. It is very time consuming and a lot of work is required to setup a new owner operator. There is a lot of work involved on the company’s part. There is also mention of a holdback. Industry insiders say to hire, orientation and plate a new driver can cost between $ 5,000.00 and $ 10,000.00 per driver. That is a substantial investment the company makes before you earn them or yourself a dime. What exactly is a holdback ? The company holds a specified amount of money (usually between $ 3,000.00 and $ 5,000.00). This holdback is used to cover any expenses that may occur once you leave the company. This may be used to offset any expenses the company is charged with that you the Owner Operator incur. This may be used to offset the first portion of any accident that you may be involved in. It may be used to offset any fuel purchases you did not report. It may be used to offset any unreported accidents. The company safety wise is always concerned with preventable versus non-preventable accidents. This however does not preclude the fact you may be determined to be at fault. Even if you were not charged, it is usually up to the accident review committee and the insurance company to determine preventable versus nonpreventable accidents. Remember the holdback is your money! The contract, should also specify the time between, when you leave a company and when the holdback will be returned to you. The contract should also contain any bonuses you may be eligible to receive. What routes you are expected to drive, and
any other items that may affect not only the driver but also the company. This is every driver’s opportunity, to ensure they are signing a legal document and question it before signing it. If you drive a different route than the company is paying, will you be charged for the extra gas used? Some companies give their O/O a reduction in the insurance costs as a bonus based on meeting certain criteria. Make sure the contract spells out all of the criteria. For example you join a company and they are charging you 5.25% of your gross pay for insurance. Does this also cover the gross pay on the fuel surcharge? If so every time the company increases the fuel surcharge they pay to you, are you really receiving any of it? Or is it just being reduced by the insurance surcharge you are paying? How often will the percentage be reduced? After a year, if you meet all of the criteria a drop to 4.5%. However, let’s say, you get a ticket during the year, does your insurance increase immediately, upon your receiving your ticket, or on your anniversary date. Which would be fair for both sides? Some companies are trying to attract new O/O’s by advertising locked in fuel costs. This is a great concept. They were locking in at $ 0.80 per litre. However upon further inspection, the contract and the pay rate, worked out less then what the O/O were already receiving at their present company. What is the point here. As O/O you are a small business. You are in business to make money. So is your employer! Make sure everything is in writing and bring to the attention of the company immediately any discrepancies. Do not wait a month or 2 months. The company cannot go after their clients either that late, which means you do not get paid either.

RECRUITING THE PERFECT DRIVER She sits behind her new desk overlooking stationary, pictures and manuals left by the person she replaced a few days ago. She has been hired as a recruiter and is expected to bring on a number of drivers in the upcoming months. As she looks around her office she wonders the best way to find the perfect driver. Her name is Ellen; she is bright, outgoing and naturally good at talking with people. In the back of her mind she feels she was chosen for the job because she is cute and has a feeling that her boss thought more guys would talk with her because of her figure. Being very goal oriented she writes out some goals to help her meet her objectives. Hire twenty drivers by May 2011, hire 15 by August 2011 are the first two goals put down on the empty piece of paper. She then makes out a list of all the places she would run into drivers to share the benefits of working for her company. As she begins to write out the company benefits, she feels confident it will be no trouble to find drivers. Their wages are a little above other companies so they have good mileage rates, they run good areas of North America, and with little New York City. Her confidence grows as she completes her goals and feels good she has put together an action plan for recruiting. As she works her way through the upcoming months she speaks with
many drivers and explains the benefits of her company, but her recruiting efforts are not turning out the results she desired. She wonders what is wrong. She looks out her office window to the truck parking lot wondering what is wrong. The trucks seem okay, nothing special; a truck is a truck after all. She decides to spend her next few days on a fact finding mission. Ellen explains to her boss as she has never driven a truck and she would like to spend a week in the trucks learning how the professional driver works. The next morning she arrives in the yard bright and early on the dock to watch the drivers load their trucks. Apparently morning coffee is in short supply here as everyone is at each other’s throats. She then enters the truck after buckling up in the passenger seat and takes a look around the truck. She has never seen the inside of a big rig and is certainly not impressed with this one. The truck is dirty, obviously had a few drivers as its habitants and is in rough shape. As they pull out, the driver who is very nice, but does not exactly ooze professionalism, has dirty clothes, is unshaven, wearing a beanie hat, lacks organizational talent but drives the truck managing to get through the day without incident. The next day she views the same wake up routine on the dock by the drivers. She goes out with a different driver today and notices similar circumstances. The only difference is this driver’s attitude is a little more negative. He
has stopped caring about his job, is late for delivery appointments and does not show any personality. She even overhears a receiver complaining about the company to another driver. As the week goes on she notices similar problems with other drivers. At this end of the week she goes over the results of the week with her manager. His response is that drivers are all that way and that is the norm. After suggesting ways to improve the company, her boss turns down her suggestions telling her to focus on her job. She realizes the company will always have trouble hiring quality drivers and decides to look for other opportunities. The boss in this story was actually correct. Many companies operate that way and consider it normal operations. However if you are trying to attract quality drivers, good mileage rates may not be the answer. Drivers basically live in their truck all week and for many that’s more important than the mileage pay. Many drivers actually approach a company based upon recommendations by other drivers. So the best recruiting method might be to evaluate your fleet and drivers first and make sure you are attracting the drivers you want. If you want quality drivers they are attracted to quality companies. If you upgrade the professionalism of your drivers you will find your recruiting efforts are complemented through the driver pool making your job much easier. Good luck.

Volvo Trucks Safety Award Continues in 2011 A
gain this year, two fleets in North America will be recognized for their commitment to safety through the 2011 Volvo Trucks Safety Award. The honorees will each receive $25,000 to be used in their safety-related activities.
2011 marks the third consecutive year that Volvo Trucks will highlight the safety efforts of two outstanding fleets. Michelin again joins Volvo in sponsoring the Volvo Trucks Safety Award, focusing on the importance of highway safety for the trucking industry and
all motorists. “Safety has long been a Volvo core value, and a central concern of the entire trucking industry,” said Ron Huibers, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Volvo Trucks in North America. “The Volvo Trucks Safety Award is a way to recognize the industry’s best for their excellent work and dedication to safety.” “Highway safety starts long before trucks take to the road,” Huibers said. “Our vehicles feature active safety technologies, like Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology and Volvo Enhanced Cruise, that make the highways safer for all of us. Volvo Trucks and Michelin view this award as an opportunity to support fleets in furthering their own commitments to safety.” The Volvo Trucks Safety Award is open to all U.S. and Canadian fleets operating at least five Class 8 units. Fleets must have at least one Volvo tractor in operation to be eligible for the award. Entrants will be ranked by their accident frequency rates. Participating fleets will also be judged on their accident prevention activities. The deadline for entry is June 30, 2011. The winners of the award will be announced during the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition in Oct. 2011. The two grand prizes will be awarded to the fleets with the best records in two divisions based on annual vehicle miles traveled: less than 20 million miles and more than 20 million miles. Complete rules and entry forms are at http://www.volvotruckssafetyaward.com The winners of the 2010 Volvo Trucks Safety Award were MacKinnon Transport of Guelph, Ontario, and Upper Lakes Foods, Cloquet, Minnesota.

Canada, “My wife is a software expert but I’m into the media line which is not so well-paying abroad. So I’ve signed up for Yoga classes and for the next three months I’ll perfect my asanas, so that I can make some money when we finally move.

THE GLASS CEILING: Mandira Bedi dazzles in the contemporary diamond jewellery created by MAIA — the soon to be launched fine jewellery store in Khar
On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

End of her political career? When the controversy
erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.
Personal relationships not working out:
I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to. The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft. Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

Don’t Let Pallet Rules Disrupt Border Crossings Supply Chain Needs Time to Prepare and Adjust, According to CTA
I
n a submission to the United States Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) cautioned US officials that there will be serious disruptions at the land border unless industry is given adequate time to prepare for impending rule changes governing treatment of wood packaging materials (WPM) that are designed to reduce the spread of harmful insects that attack forests.
In a proposed rule issued by APHIS in December 2010, the agency outlined a plan to eliminate a Canadian exemption on treatment of WPM, such as pallets and dunnage, entering the United States from Canada. Chemical or heat treatment of WPM is designed to reduce the spread of harmful insects, and international standards are applied to WPM entering the United States and Canada from third countries. The rules are not currently applied against WPM used for Canadian or US origin goods moving across our shared border. According to the US Department of Agriculture, there are 320 million pallets used each year in transporting Canadian goods into the United States. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) plans to eliminate a similar exemption for WPM entering Canada from the United States. “CTA takes no position on the science behind the decision to eliminate the exemption,” noted CTA Chief Executive Officer David Bradley. “Canada and the US share a common interest in protecting our forest resources, and if this means treatment of pallets and dunnage, then so be it. But at the same time, CTA’s discussions with industry and government officials have made it abundantly clear that we are simply not ready at this time to ensure that there is an adequate supply of treated WPM in circulation to meet the demands of Canada-US trade, and nor has APHIS outlined detailed plans on how it will apply and enforce the rules at the border.” According to a written submission Job Seekers: Sign up this month for a chance to to APHIS, CTA argued that enforcement win a Sirius Sportster 5 Radio with Universal Boombox. should not begin “until APHIS and CFIA, Today’s Trucking and highwaySTAR magazines, and working with industry, are satisfied that Workopolis Niche Network have partnered to bring you there are enough WPM compliant pallets TruckCareers.ca. Looking good While her husband was lying down, his wife removed his glasses. “You know, honey,” she said sweetly, “Without your glasses you look like the same handsome young man I married.” “Honey,” he replied with a grin, “Without my glasses, you still look pretty good too!” Private talk While watching a movie recently, a man couldn’t hear the dialogue over the chatter of the two elderly women sitting in front of him. Unable to bear it any longer, he tapped one of them on the shoulder. “Excuse me,” he said, “I can’t hear.” “You should not,” she replied sharply. “This is a private conversation.” Missing tail light “Pull over the curb,” said the policeman. “You don’t have a tail light.” The motorist stepped out, looked in back of the car, and stood quivering and speechless. “Oh, it’s not that bad,” said the policeman. The man mumbled, “It’s not the taillight I am worried about. Where are my wife and trailer?” Smart witness While Mark was shopping for pet supplies, one of the salespersons came running up to him. “Mark! Mark! I just saw someone driving off with your BMW!” “Dear God! Did your try to stop him?” “No,” said the clerk, “but don’t worry. I got the licence plate number!” www.roadtoday.com

PANIC ATTACKS I recently had a driver come into my clinic complaining of shortness of breath, rapid heart rate and chest pain. He reported that it started about one hour ago, when he was driving in heavy traffic during a snow storm. Naturally, I referred him to the emergency room to be checked out for a possible heart attack. As it turns out, his heart was fine and he had just experienced his first panic attack. A panic attack is simply a sudden feeling of intense fear that develops for no apparent reason. Often panic attacks trigger severe physical reactions. In the past, panic attacks were attributed to stress or over active nerves, however they are now recognized as a legitimate medical condition. Fortunately, modern treatments are often very effective. The symptoms of a panic attack can vary quite greatly from person to person. They can include: • Chest pain • Rapid heart rate • Shortness of breath • Sweating • Nausea • Dizziness • Headache • Chills • Hyperventilation As you can see, many of the above symptoms can resemble life threatening conditions. Thus, it is vital to seek medical attention as soon as possible. In most cases, panic attacks begin suddenly without any real warning. They can occur at anytime even when
you are sleeping. However, many people experience panic attacks during stressful situations. The symptoms of a panic attack are usually short lived, most only lasting between thirty to sixty minutes. The exact cause of panic attacks is still unknown. However, researches think that genetics and stress are the two main contributing factors. Traumatic events such as the death or serious illness of a loved one or major life changes are common initiating factors. Diagnosing panic attacks is not always an easy task. Your physician will first have to rule out other serious medical conditions. A physical examination is usually where your physician will start. From there, laboratory investigations such as blood tests and electrocardiograms will help pinpoint a diagnosis. A physician or a mental health worker may also perform a psychological evaluation. The good news about panic attacks is that treatments are very effective. In most cases, the goal of treatment is to reduce or eliminate all of your panic attack symptoms. The two main treatment options for panic attacks are medications and psychotherapy. Many physicians recommend a combination of both treatments. Medications such as antidepressants are often the first to be prescribed. Popular drugs such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft are widely prescribed for panic attacks. Other medications such as mild sedatives may also be recommended by your physician. If one particular medication is not effective in treating

your symptoms, your physician may recommend switching to another. In addition to medications, psychotherapy has been proven to be effective in treating panic attacks. The main type of psychotherapy used to treat this condition is called cognitive behavioral therapy. This type of therapy can help you identify patterns and triggers of your panic attacks. During these sessions, you will learn how to cope with the feelings of anxiety and physical symptoms associated with panic attacks. In recent years, researches have explored several natural treatments for anxiety disorders. However, two alternative treatments have shown significant potential. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, deep breathing and mediation may be an effective treatment for some people with panic disorders. Also, nutritional supplements which aid in the action of serotonin may reduce the frequency and severity of panic attacks. It is important to note that these products may cause side effects and may interact with your other medications. Talk to your physician before taking any natural supplement. As you can see, panic attacks are not a life threatening condition. However, they can cause major disruptions in a person’s life. Although there is no way of preventing panic attacks, seeking treatment as soon as possible will stop them from worsening. So next time you are sitting in a traffic jam, remember to take a few deep breaths! Until next month, drive safely.
