INNOVATION

Walmart unveils the WAVE futuristic concept truck

Walmart has unveiled the Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience (WAVE) concept truck which will be 20 percent more aerodynamic than its current trucks and have a micro-turbine hybrid powertrain that can run on diesel, natural gas, biodiesel and probably other fuels still to be developed.

T

he vehicle is a collaboration between Walmart, Peterbilt, Capstone Turbine and Great Dane Trailers. The concept truck may never make it to the road, but will allow Walmart to test new technologies and new approaches. WAVE incorporates advanced aerodynamics, a sliding driver’s door, a driver’s seat in the centre, an electronic dashboard and a full sleeper at the back.

The trailer incorporates 53-ft. carbon fibre panels that run the length of the trailer. It’s the first time that one-piece 53-ft panels were ever built. The concept truck was one of the innovations discussed at the Sustainability Milestone Meeting held by Walmart. By seeing through the lens of sustainability, Walmart is accelerating the pace of innovation across the business. RT

Trailcon Leasing Purchases Hubs Trailer Service National trailer rental, leasing, and fleet maintenance specialist Trailcon Leasing has announced its purchase of Calgary-based Hubs Trailer Service, changing the landscape of fleet leasing and support services in western Canada.

T

railcon President Alan Boughton announced the purchase from the company’s head office in Mississauga, Ontario. He says Trailcon has been looking to expand its existing Calgary operation and acquiring Hubs is a “right-fit” opportunity. Boughton started Trailcon in 1992. Today, with more than 100 employees, Trailcon owns a fleet of 6,500 units, servicing companies such as ATS Healthcare, Canada Cartage, Loblaw, Target Canada, and Walmart. Its maintenance

operation looks after an additional 8,500 customer-owned units across Canada. Existing customers of both Trailcon and Hubs will benefit from a larger network of fleet support services. “Our customers shipping across Canada used to have to find their own support in the various markets they travelled through,” said Hubs owner Mitch Hancock. “Now they’ll be able to access a much larger service and repair network when they need it. This is one of those ‘one plus one equals three’ kind of deals,” he said.

All Hubs employees will be brought into the Trailcon family, along with a 15,000-square-foot facility housing eight service bays. Trailcon has operations in Mississauga and Cornwall in Ontario, and Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta. The purchase of Hubs Trailer Service is the first Trailcon has made since the 1990s but is not expected to be the last. “Trailcon is blazing a new trail -- a trail of acquisitions,” Boughton said. “We’re in growth mode, with our sights set on further expansion across Canada.” RT

New Options Now Available for Western Star 4700 A frame rail mounted vertical exhaust stack is now offered as an option for Western Star 4700 set-back and set-forward truck and tractor models. This configuration is now available in combination with the aerodynamic roof and side fairing options.

P

referred by vocational fleets that pull dry van and reefer trailers, the addition of the new frame mounted vertical exhaust, combined with the aero fairings, provides fleets with enhanced ability to achieve greater fuel economy with Western Star regardless of their desired exhaust configuration. In addition to the new vertical exhaust, it also has a cab-mounted vertical exhaust and a horizontal tail pipe option. “We know our customers seek customization options and configurations that personalize their trucks without compromising performance,” said Guy Lemieux, marketing segment manager for Western Star. “The Western Star 4700 has a wide selection of premium, aerodynamic and lightweight options that are as tough as our trucks.” Hand-built and available with a broad range of engine choices and many other options, the Western Star 4700 is the ideal highway solution for bulk haul and construction applications. INDUSTRYEVENT

Natural gas fleet workshop series held across Canada

S

ix natural gas fleet workshops were held across Canada during February 2014 with a focus on medium- and heavy-duty factory-built natural gas vehicles. The half-day workshops were supported by Natural Resources Canada’s ecoENERGY for Alternative Fuels program. These workshops were aimed to give fleets much needed information on operating compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles including project implementation information as well as details regarding economic and environmental benefits. In Ontario, the workshops held in London (Feb 18) and Mississauga (Feb 19) were organised by the Eastern Information Hub operated by MARCON Management Consultants. The GO WITH NATURAL GAS INFORMATION Hubs are a new service for Canadian fleets. The Hubs deliver fact-based information, education materials, access to resources, and fleet workshops. They connect fleet managers with their peers who are already using natural gas vehicles to offer real world experiences and lessons learned. “Natural gas for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles is one of the biggest made-in-Canada environmental stories of the

decade” says Douglas Stout, Vice President of FortisBC and Chair of the Canadian Natural Gas Vehicle Alliance. “Canadian innovation created the engines that can replace diesel with natural gas, and this technology is being used to transform the heavy vehicle transportation sector in North America. Switching to natural gas is a strategy that all fleet owners should be considering.” Operating fleet vehicles on natural gas can make transportation companies more competitive and help municipal fleets become greener and cleaner. Heavy vehicles are one of Canada’s fastest growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Natural gas vehicles reduce emissions by up to 20 percent compared to diesel vehicles. There are an estimated 50 models of factory-built trucks and buses to choose from. RT

Cummins-Peterbilt SuperTruck Achieves 10.7 MPG in Latest Test Cummins and Peterbilt Motors have announced that the latest version of their SuperTruck demonstration tractor-trailer achieved 10.7 mpg last month under real-world driving conditions.

D

eveloping a truck that could meet or exceed 10 mpg when fully loaded was considered unlikely, if not impossible, just a few years back, with most trucks averaging between 5.5 and 6.5 mpg. However, with advances in engines, aerodynamics and more, SuperTruck has proven that 10 mpg is attainable. SuperTruck averaged a 75 percent increase in fuel economy, a 43 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an 86 percent gain in freight efficiency in 24-hour, head-to-head testing against a 2009 baseline truck -- all significant improvements. The Cummins-Peterbilt SuperTruck was on display for President Barack Obama’s announcement of firm deadlines for the next generation of national fuel-efficiency and GHG emissions standards for heavyduty commercial vehicles. The goal of the SuperTruck program, initiated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is to improve long-haul Class 8 vehicle freight efficiency. The program focuses on advanced and highly efficient engine systems and vehicle technologies that meet prevailing emissions and Class 8 tractor-trailer vehicle safety and regulatory requirements. In addition to the benefits of reduced fuel consumption and petroleum usage, the improvements in engine system efficiency will deliver a significant reduction in GHG emissions. Cummins has partnered with Peterbilt Motors Co. for the SuperTruck project. The project objectives have included development and demonstration of a highly efficient and clean diesel engine, an advanced waste heat recovery system, an aerodynamic tractor and trailer combination and a lithium ion battery-auxiliary power unit, to reduce engine idling.

14

MARCH 2014

/roadtoday

The Cummins-Peterbilt SuperTruck uses the PeterbiltModel 579, with best-in-class aerodynamic efficiency. The engine, based on Cummins industryleading ISX15, converts exhaust heat into power delivered to the crankshaft, and has electronic control software that uses route information to optimize fuel use. The SuperTruck also includes chassis refinements, improvements in the aerodynamics and other significant advances in the engine. Lightweighting throughout the tractor-trailer also enables increased freight efficiency. Eaton Corp., also part of the CumminsPeterbilt SuperTruck project team, is developing a next-generation automated transmission that improves fuel efficiency in heavy-duty trucks. Eaton’s contribution includes the design, development and prototyping of an advanced transmission that facilitates reduced engine-operating speeds. Cummins and Eaton jointly

designed shift schedules and other features to yield further improved fuel efficiency. The Class 8 Peterbilt Model 579, powered by a Cummins ISX15 engine, achieved 10.7 mpg during testing last month between Denton, Texas, and Vernon, Texas. The 312-mile route was the same one used two years ago, when the first version of the Cummins-Peterbilt SuperTruck averaged just under 10 mpg. The testing in both instances was conducted on a round-trip basis, to negate any wind advantage that might have been gained by traveling one way, and each tractor-trailer had a combined gross weight of 65,000 lb running at 64 mph. A longer, 500-mile route between Denton and Memphis, Texas, was also used to demonstrate the vehicle’s fuel-efficiency improvement over a 24-hour test cycle. The increase in fuel economy for the Cummins-Peterbilt SuperTruck would save about $27,000 annually per truck based on today’s diesel fuel prices for a long-haul truck traveling 120,000 miles (193,121 km) per year. It would also translate into a more than 43 percent reduction in annual GHG emissions per truck. RT

This announcement, part of the bi-national U.S.Canada Beyond the Border Accord, is a key deliverable under the Beyond the Border Action Plan issued by Prime Minister Harper and President

Obama in December 2011. Canada and the U.S. are using the pilot to test the concept of conducting U.S. Custom and Border Protection (CBP) primary inspection of U.S.-bound truck cargo in Canada in order to better manage their shared border and improve economic opportunities for both countries. Minister Blaney, Minister Nicholson, Deputy Secretary Mayorkas and Congressman Higgins toured the CBP truck cargo pre-inspection area in order to see first-hand how pre-inspection will work with a view to alleviate the challenges travellers and truck traffic face with congestion when crossing the bridge. Michael A. Regan, Trent W. Victor and John D. Lee, looks to inspire further research and countermeasure development to prevent and mitigate the potentially adverse effects of driver distraction and driver inattention, and, in doing so, to save lives. Evidence (reviewed in this volume) suggests that driver distraction and inattention are even more dangerous as contributing factors in crashes than drug and alcohol intoxication. Having a solid evidence-base from which to develop injury countermeasures is a cornerstone of road-safety management. This book adds to the accumulating evidence-base on driver distraction and inattention, throughout its 24 chapters written by 52 authors from 10 countries. Michael A. Regan is with the University of New South Wales, Australia and also works as an Adjunct Professor with Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden; Dr. T.W. Victor is a Senior Specialist

in Safety Analysis and Human Factors at Volvo Technology, a research and innovation company in the Volvo Group; and Professor Lee is the Emerson Electric faculty in the department of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. RT

INDUSTRYREGULATIONS

ACI eManifest Mandate Published in Gazette 1 The Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) proposed regulations to mandate eManifest requirements for highway carriers under the Advanced Commercial Information (ACI) program have been pre-published in the Canada Gazette, Part I.

T

he Canadian Trucking Alliance and its members have been working very closely with CBSA since 2005 in designing the ACI program, specifically the highway eManifest policy as well as operational and technical details. Significant time has been invested by CTA and highway carriers in the consultation process. The Alliance is pleased that the mandate is finally being implemented. What this means is that the mandatory requirements for carriers to supply advance conveyance and shipment information to CBSA will soon be implemented. Voluntary submission of eManifest began

in October 2012. According to CBSA, stats from December 2013 indicate over 10,600 highway carriers are currently engaged in eManifest, representing over 95% of the cross-border highway volumes in 2013. Now that the regulations have been pre-published in the Gazette Part I, public and industry stakeholders will have 30 days to submit comments on the proposed regulation. CBSA will then respond to all comments it receives and once any necessary adjustments are made, the regulations will be published in the Canada Gazette Part II. CBSA will then make a subsequent announcement that eManifest will soon be mandatory and highway

carriers will have 45 days advance notice of the mandatory compliance date. Once the system is mandated, there will be a six month period where zero-rated Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) penalties will be applied to those who do not comply. Following that, carriers risk penalty for non-compliance. CTA has been working closely with CBSA in discussions around the ACI AMPS penalties. Carriers with questions with respect to the ACI AMPS can contact Jennifer.Fox@ cantruck.ca for more information. Highway carriers not yet submitting eManifests to CBSA should prepare now. Carriers can provide eManifest information to CBSA using a variety of methods, either through EDI, Direct Connection with the CBSA, service provider with established connection with CBSA or using the CBSA web based portal. For more information on how to start filing eManifest, please go to CBSA’s website. RT

Volvo Trucks Introduces Interior and Exterior LED Lighting for North American Models

In-cab LED lighting is now standard across Volvo Trucks’ North American vehicle lineup. Optional LED headlamps, designed for better visibility and longer life, are now available for the Volvo VNL and VNX. Both the LED interior lighting and LED headlamps are available for order. The solid-state LED interior lights and headlamps consume oneeighth the energy required of standard incandescent lighting and are designed for a significantly longer life.

T

he optional LED headlamps from Truck-Lite Co. available on the Volvo VNL and VNX, models significantly improve visibility through an expanded beam pattern and light coloring similar to daylight. The headlamps also feature a lens coating to resist hazing and yellowing. Standard interior LED lighting on Volvo VNM, VNL, VNX, VHD and VAH models provide far longer life than standard bulbs while also placing less strain on the truck

batteries than incandescent lighting. Red LED reading lamps are also available with the interior combination lamps, providing reading capability at night without sacrificing forward visibility. “In addition to improved efficiency and visibility compared with incandescent lighting, LEDs are designed to last far longer, so use of LED lighting can help reduce vehicle downtime and potential CSA violations,” said Jason Spence, Volvo Trucks RT product marketing manager.

Optional LED headlamps, designed for better visibility and longer life, are now available for the Volvo VNL and VNX models.

New GT Radial GDM635 Mixed Service Tire Features Deep Lug Tread Design The new GT Radial GDM635 on/off highway drive tire is being introduced in North America to provide mixed service fleets consistent traction and effective protection against stones and long tread wear.

F

eaturing a full inch (32/32nds) of tread rubber for outstanding durability and wear, the GT Radial GDM635 is currently available in the 11R24.5 size. It is backed by the GT Radial six-year limited warranty. “We’re excited to kick off the year with the introduction of an outstanding new drive tire for on/off highway applications,” said Justin Wright, commercial product marketing manager for Giti Tire USA, which markets and sells GT Radial tires in North America. “The GDM635’s deep lug tread design is one of the tire’s strongest selling points, offering a full inch of rubber to get the job done.” Wright said the new deep-tread drive tire is perfectly suited for a variety of mixed service fleet operations, including logging, mining and oil field services.

The GT Radial GDM635’s aggressive independent block design is optimized to provide consistent traction, and the tread’s v-shaped grooves with stone ejectors offer effective protection against stone retention and drilling. The tire has been engineered with four belts which provide effective casing protection for outstanding durability and retreadability. It has a special cut/chip tread compound to resist cutting, chipping, chunking and tearing in harsh off-highway environments. In truck and bus tires, the company provides a wide range of GT Radial long haul, regional and mixed service products in North America. Most of the GT Radial premium long haul line is verified by SmartWay: GSL213FS for steer axles, GT669+FS for drive, and the GT979FS (low profile sizes 22.5 and 24.5 only) for trailers. RT

AUTO TALK

Is your spare tire in good working order? (NC) There is nothing drivers dread more than the sound of rubber flapping on asphalt. Typically, the first reaction to a flat tire is disbelief, followed by annoyance and then a quick phone call to a towing company.

B

ut what happens when there is no phone signal and no tow truck in sight? Emily Chung, a licensed mechanic, and the brand ambassador for Hankook Tire Canada, gives us five easy steps to changing a flat for a spare: 1 – Look ahead Most car manufacturers include with the vehicle all the essential tools needed to change a tire. Inspect that the equipment

is not only where it should be, but also that it’s in good working order - before you need it. Not sure what you need? Here’s a quick check list: a spare tire, a diamond jack, a tire iron, a pair of gloves and a flashlight. 2 – Get loose You need to do a little prep before you get to work. Start by loosening the lug nuts. These small pieces of metal keep tires attached to the car so they’re typically screwed on very tightly. You’re going to need a tire iron and a little elbow grease to get this done. 3 – Lift it up Here’s where the heavy lifting takes place, but luckily not by you. Place the diamond jack under the frame of the vehicle. Many new vehicles have a designated slot for this, so take some time to ensure the jack is secured. Begin by twisting the lever and continue until the vehicle is high enough that the tire can be easily removed. You don’t need to get under the vehicle at any point in this process.

4 – Make the switch Remove the loosened lug nuts and slide the flat off. Lift the spare onto the vehicle and align the holes of the rims with the bolts of the tire. Position the tire into place and begin to screw on the lug nuts with your hands as far as you can. Next, lower the vehicle to the ground and remove the jack. Once the vehicle has been lowered, use the tire iron to tighten the bolts in a diagonal pattern as tightly as possible without stripping the thread. 5 – Change it up “Spare tires are not meant to be a permanent replacement,” says Chung. “They’re typically smaller and less equipped to deal with the demands of the road. So you only want to use the spare to get you to your mechanic or auto shop in order to get your all-season tires back on.” More information can be found at www.hankooktire.ca. RT

Spare tires are not meant to be a permanent replacement. Head to your local dealership or garage and get your all-season tires back on as soon as the weather warms up.

PIT Introduces Technology Certification Program PIT Power provides accurate fuel economy value rankings

F

PInnovations’ Performance Innovation Transport (PIT) group, a not-for-profit engineering and research group for the North American trucking industry, has announced PIT Power at its First Annual Emerging Technologies Conference held in Toronto. The event, attended by the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Federal Minister of Transport, and under the auspices of Christopher G. Trajkovski, Vice President of Fleet Maintenance at Bison Transport, brought together leading developers, suppliers and fleet owners from across North America and Europe. “With a long history of research activities in the forest industry’s transport sector,

30

MARCH 2014

/roadtoday

FPInnovations is proud to be working with the multi-national transport fleets in their efforts to improve fuel efficiency”, stated Pierre Lapointe, President and CEO of FPInnovations. “PIT Power is only one of many steps we are taking to lead the global sector towards an intelligent transport system”. PIT Power is a new certification program that fleets can use to quickly and accurately identify the fuel efficiency value of a technology. “We developed PIT Power based on our internationally recognized Energotest, which is the industry’s most accurate, independent and indisputable evaluation process of the return on investment fleets can expect from green technologies,” said Yves Provencher, director

of PIT. “PIT Power uses the stringent testing protocols to reliably rank fuel efficiency. Suppliers can take advantage of this new certification process to demonstrate the real value of their technologies.” PIT Power provides suppliers who submit technologies for evaluation with the credibility associated with an exact, indisputable fuel economy ranking. The ratings start at 2, which indicates a 2% fuel savings, and have no upper limit. A supplier that receives a PIT Power rating will be able to demonstrate its achievement by posting the PIT Power logo on its technology. Fleets can look for technologies displaying PIT Power ratings as proof of performance. RT

GUESTCOLUMN

Winter Driving Means Keeping Your Options Open In Ontario Canada, winter driving is probably the time of year when driving conditions can change on a dime. That being said, in many other parts of North America you can find weather conditions that are just as terrifying, just as variable, and just as problematic as other times of the year. No matter which type of weather affects the area of North America that you travel in, it is important to know what type of weather can happen in the area and keeping your eye on your options can be the key to making it through your trip in a safe and timely fashion. Experienced professional drivers know that keeping your options open are the key to a successful trip. In fact for many, watching and learning about weather patterns can make you money.

M

y wife and I were on our way back from Florida one year. We had gone on vacation over the Christmas period and were now on our return trip back home. Our normal route would have brought us up the East Coast from Atlanta arriving along the shores of Erie Pennsylvania, through Buffalo and home to Toronto. Our other option was to stick to I-75 travelling up through Detroit, along the 401 through Ontario for 4 hours to home. Both routes are common routes for people travelling from the Sunshine State. As we travelled back home I was keeping a keen eye on the weather patterns. The winter had been riddled with severe winter storms as seems common around the Holidays and even our time in Florida had been much colder than expected. Now many people start looking at weather patterns when it arrives close to the area they will be driving through, however I had started watching the weather that was coming across from the West Coast from Southern California, Texas and other locations. Once a weather system got east of Colorado it would warrant my attention and my goal was that it would fizzle out way before it would reach the Midwest or East Coast. We began our journey on the route originally intended and thought we would miss any patterns long before they impacted our route. That wouldn’t be the case however and a system travelling east looked like it would make the last leg of our trip something to be reckoned with. As we were watching the weather system, I was thinking about our route, so when suggested to my wife that we stay in West Virginia overnight instead of Ohio the suggestion wasn’t met with high excitement. I had to back up my suggestion with some logic. This storm

was going to be a bad one and when I estimated where we would be at the time it hit the road we would have been on we had a good chance of being caught in the worst part. By stopping at a point in our trip where we could make a decision and possibly come up behind the storm made much more sense. Overnight the storm continued on its track and because we made some decisions early we were able to travel to the west side of Lake Erie and had good weather almost all the way home. The other way would have had us on the east side of the Lake where the weather would have been the worst. Weather patterns travel in regular patterns and watching them travel and estimating your travel route for problems may be just the thing that makes your trip a memorable occasion. Always keep your options open when travelling as Mother Nature has a way of wanting to be everyone’s travel partner. RT

BUSINESSSECURITY

Is your business cyber-safe? (NC) With the increasing use of mobile devices and the prominence of social media in our lives, cyber crime poses serious security risks, especially for small businesses. In 2013 alone, cyber crime has cost Canadians $3 billion (in USD) according to a recent Norton report.

B

eing cyber safe is a practice that should be part of a company’s regular operations,” says Paul T. Ryan, Chief Technology Officer for Yellow Pages Group, a company that provides digital media and marketing solutions to Canada’s small businesses. “Small business owners may believe that they are too small to be targeted by cyber criminals, but the fact is that they’re a huge target because of their often less robust security systems.”

Ryan suggests implementing a few security measures for small businesses that are looking to protect themselves against cyber fraud: n Tablets and smartphones are great tools for sales teams but, because of their size, they are a target for both theft and fraud. Always protect your devices with a password, frequently back-up your data, and install security, encryption, and locator apps to protect sensitive business information. Most importantly, don’t access private information on free Wi-Fi networks, as they often aren’t very secure. n With the growing use of mobile comes the move to cloud computing. It’s great for data storage, as well as for marketing and sales, but this means that you’re storing your data online, outside your business and sometimes outside the country. Protect yourself by using a service that allows you to encrypt information before uploading or sharing and by only giving access to a limited number of people in your organization. Don’t forget to do your research before choosing a service provider;

read their legal terms, know where your data is being stored, and make sure their service fits your security needs. n Social media sites provide another marketing tool for small businesses to reach their potential customers, but they’re also easy targets for hackers looking to get access to private business information. If you’re using social media to promote your business, select only a small number of individuals who can post on your company’s behalf. Also, it’s important to use the site’s privacy controls, ignore requests for sensitive business information, and continue to be on the lookout for spam posts. For small businesses, cyber crime continues to be a very real threat. Ultimately, cyber safety must become the responsibility of all members of an organization, and with the implementation of simple security measures, the high cost of falling victim to this kind of fraud can often be prevented. More information on this topic is available online at yellowpages360solution. ca/fraud. RT

TEST FLIGHT Taxiing down the tarmac, the jetliner abruptly stopped and returned to the gate. After waiting about an hour, it finally took off. A concerned passenger asked the flight attendant what had happened. “The pilot was bothered by a noise he heard in the engine,” said the attendant. “It took us an hour to find another pilot!” TOMATO FLAVOUR Doctor: “That’s a big slash cut on your head. How did that happen?” Man : “My wife hit me with some tomatoes.” Doctor: “That’s incredible, I can’t imagine how any tomatoes would make a cut like that.” Man: “They were still in a can.”
