Volvo Trucks To Recognize Safest North American Fleets with 2015 Award Volvo Trucks is seeking North America’s safest fleets to recognize them with the Volvo Trucks Safety Award. For the seventh straight year, two fleets with the safest driving records and top safety programs will receive the annual award and $25,000 to be used for their safety-related activities.

The Volvo Trucks Safety Award is open to all U.S. and Canadian fleets operating at least five Class 8 units. Fleets must have at least one Volvo tractor in operation to be eligible for the award. Entrants will be ranked by their accident frequency rates and will also be judged on their accident prevention activities. The two grand prizes will be awarded to the fleets with the best records in two divisions based on annual vehicle miles traveled: less than 20 million miles and more than 20 million miles. The deadline for entry is June 30, 2015. The award winners will be announced during the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition in October 2015 in Philadelphia. Ryder to Train Entire North American
Maintenance Workforce on
Natural Gas Vehicle Technologies
R
yder System has launched a new online natural gas vehicle maintenance training program for its entire North American maintenance network. Over 6,000 maintenance and service employees across Ryder’s 800 maintenance facilities will be trained on the new technology. The program will provide the company’s technician workforce with knowledge of all natural gas vehicle platforms and configurations. This program supplements existing customized natural gas vehicle training completed by employees who are already fueling and performing maintenance on natural gas vehicles operating in customers’ fleets. Ryder has more than 30 million miles of experience, 14 natural gas vehicle maintenance facilities, and 260 natural gas vehicle trained technicians. Since deploying its natural gas vehicle program in 2011, Ryder has replaced approximately 4.6 million gallons of diesel fuel with lower emission domestically produced natural gas. Customers can tap into Ryder’s extensive knowledge of natural gas and rapidly evolving advanced fuels maintenance network, along with its highly trained and experienced technicians, to ensure the safe operation, maintenance, and fueling of natural gas vehicles. Ryder’s advanced fuels sales team can also help businesses determine which vehicle configurations work best for their specific applications. Ryder is able to leverage its buying power, knowledge of emerging fleet technologies, as well as government rebates and tax incentive programs, to help reduce natural gas vehicle costs for customers and offer more competitive lease and rental rates. Ryder actively monitors public and private incentive programs throughout the U.S. and Canada to leverage those areas that offer incentives. MEETING DISCUSSES NATIONAL SAFETY CODE STANDARD 11

he monthly meeting of the Automotive Transportation Service Superintendents Association (ATSSA) Toronto held on February 10th received overwhelming attention from the membership and industry guests. The meeting hall was in full capacity to learn more about the changes made to National Safety Code Standard 11 Maintenance and Periodic Inspection Standards. The evening saw excellent presentations made by Rolf VanderZwaag (Manager of Maintenance & Tech. Issues at Ontario Trucking Association) and Rob Monster (Senior Engineer at MTO Carrier Safety Enforcement Branch). Additional educational resources were provided for a better understanding and compliance of the new changes. Attendees optimally utilized the opportunity to get their queries answered from the guest speakers.
What is Changing • Criteria for safety standards certificates (SSC), annual and semi-annual inspections for trucks, trailers, buses, accessible and school purposes vehicles can be found in the National Safety Code Standard 11 Part B 2014 “Periodic Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections” (NSC 11B). • Modifications to NSC 11B have been made in Regulation 611 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) “Safety Inspections”. • Complementary amendments have been made to HTA Regulation 601 “Motor Vehicle Inspection Stations”.

Online Tool Helps Volvo Trucks Customers Select Most Efficient Powertrain

Volvo Trucks in North America is assisting customers in finding the best powertrain torque package for their operation through a recently launched and easy-to-use online survey. Using the theme “Don’t Go Power Crazy,” Volvo is promoting the survey with several short videos emphasizing the importance of using the right amount of power for the job.
T
he online tool – available at www.volvotrucks.us.com/ torque – poses several multiplechoice questions designed to gather key information about the customer’s duty cycle and preferences. Based on various factors, such as load profile, cruise speed, terrain, type of roads used and the customer’s priorities for fuel efficiency versus performance, the survey recommends one of several torque packages and provides a link to more information. To emphasize the notion that truck owners should seek the right power, not the most power, Volvo produced three short videos that highlight the pitfalls of using too much power in everyday life, such as when watering the garden, lighting the yard or making a salad. “Our torque management software and integrated powertrain allow us to deliver highly customized specs to match customers’ specific applications,” said John Moore, Volvo Trucks product marketing manager-powertrain. “The number of choices can be confusing, so the new online tool

breaks the decision down to just a handful of key questions that will help identify a recommended option in less than a minute.” For customers seeking to maximize fuel efficiency in over-the-road applications, Volvo offers XE – eXceptional Efficiency – powertrain packages, which lower engine rpm at a given vehicle speed through integration of theVolvo I-Shift automated manual transmission and Volvo power. XE is available in High Torque, Economy and Adaptive Gearing packages depending on application. Customers needing more of a balance between efficiency and performance might choose Eco-Torque, which is available in the following packages: Eco-Torque Performance and Eco-Torque Economy. For some heavyduty and vocational applications that require different torque delivery characteristics, the best option might be straight torque. Volvo torque options are available for Volvo’s proprietary 11-liter D11, 13-liter D13 and 16-liter D16 engines. Securing Cargo to Reduce Rollover Risk
C
argo securement regulations specify that a securement system must be able to withstand a sideways force of 0.5 g (50% of the cargo’s weight). If your securement system is not strong enough, a turn might push your cargo to the side of the vehicle and unbalance it. Even if the securement system is working the way it should, going too fast around a curve can cause a rollover because of the lateral forces acting on both the vehicle and cargo. Most rollovers result from excessive speed and not shifting cargo. All vehicles will roll over if they take a turn too quickly, but the likelihood of a rollover also depends on the vehicle’s center of gravity and weight. This is known as the roll threshold. The lower the roll threshold, the more likely a vehicle will roll over. Because of their large size and weight, commercial vehicles have a high center of gravity and a low roll threshold. When the load increases in height and weight, the vehicle’s center of gravity increases and the roll threshold is even lower. To reduce the risk of rollovers, you must observe posted speed limits on turns and curves. The limits are based on typical roll thresholds, between 0.05 to 0.17 g. If your speed is 70 km/h (45 mph) on a ramp posted for 40 km/h (25 mph), your vehicle will produce lateral acceleration of about 0.5 g, and you will have difficulty keeping the vehicle on the road. If you are carrying an especially high or heavy load, it’s best to err on the side of caution and reduce your speed even more than what is posted. Remember! Cargo should always be positioned in the center of the trailer in order to prevent one side from being heavier than the other. Vehicle imbalances can also increase the potential to roll over.

mall and mid-sized businesses (SMEs) are not immune when it comes to fraud. In fact, due to their size or to their limited resources, these companies are often the target of costly scams from both outside and inside sources. “According to Industry Canada, SMEs represent two-thirds of all the jobs generated in the private sector, so they need to be healthy in order to contribute to the vitality of our country’s economy,” says François Ramsay, the senior vice-president of corporate affairs for Yellow Pages. “That’s why it’s important to equip them against the various types of fraud they are regularly exposed to – and the best way for a company with limited resources to combat fraud is to set up simple prevention systems that will save considerable amounts of money and provide invaluable peace of mind.”

Identify your company’s weaknesses so that you can create and implement internal preventive mechanisms. Examples include reassessing if only one person is responsible for finances, or curbing free access to your inventory. Deal only with suppliers that are included on a list approved by management and whose invoices are regularly checked. Be aware of fraudulent solicitations of invoices or agreements, a particular kind of scam that masquerades as a legitimate company, like Yellow Pages. In response, Yellow Pages has put together a guide to help identify such fraud. Get to know your employees. Check their references and their professional and academic history for instances of fraudulent or illegal activities. If you want to fill a stock management position, you might think about running a credit check with the applicant’s permission. Install security cameras to monitor activities at checkouts and in areas where products are stored. People are less likely to commit fraud if they know they are being watched. Conduct spot checks of specific functions in your company where fraud might occur. Spot checks are a useful deterrent, because employees know there’s a chance that fraudulent activity will be discovered. Check over bank statements yourself. Watch for: missing cheques or cheques issued out of sequence; unknown recipients; cheques that appear to have been altered or not signed by authorized signatories; and any other unusual detail. Develop a fraud policy and distribute it to all employees. This way, you make it clear that not only do you take such activities seriously, but that they have consequences. This in itself can be a deterrent. Take the necessary measures when you discover fraud. Having a fraud policy is useless if you don’t apply it. Gazzola Paving and Quality Collision – A Reliable Team
W
hat started as a landscaping business slowly became a paving business, when customers expressed an interest in having a paved driveway to finish off their newly landscaped yard. The Gazzola fleet, which today numbers over 140 trucks, is comprised mostly of Mack units. The fleet has included Ford, International, Peterbilt and Sterling in the past. Given the nature of the construction, road building and snow clearing operations that form the backbone of Gazzola’s business, reliable vocational trucks are an absolute necessity. The customized Peterbilt shown on the cover and on these pages started out as a 1987 Peterbilt 379 purchased at auction after being used as a highway hauler. Gazzola used the truck to haul an asphalt tank trailer for their asphalt plant in Rexdale. The truck was originally rust coloured, however Virgil Gazzola, the grandson of company
founder Virginio and operations manager for the company, painted the truck in the red and white company colours. Virgil’s father Vern had some hot rods when he was growing up and Virgil was always a car guy. He liked customizing cars and keeping the truck fleet looking clean and polished. Virgil worked with a shop to add some chrome and a wood floor to the Pete. The modifications looked like someone had just added parts to the truck and did not satisfy Virgil’s vision of what the truck could be. While at a show, Virgil saw a truck that had been modified in a manner that matched his vision. He contacted Frank and Ken Fenwick at Quality Collision Centre on Clark Boulevard in Brampton, Ontario and mental images became artists renderings which led to the finished product. Quality Collision has done numerous custom trucks, as well as a 1951 Ford dump truck to replicate the first truck in the Gazzola fleet. The shop foreman at Gazzola, Tony Calitri, a former stock car racer, stripped the truck down to the frame rails. The entire frame was disassembled, sandblasted, lengthened by 36 inches, painted with red polyurethane and

People’s mood start to change as the weather gets better and joy and freshness share the air. March also brings on a string of events in the transportation world. Job fairs begin, truck shows get ready for launch and companies are hungrier than ever for top employees. Drivers are of course top of the list and anyone with a commercial license should be working, yet many are not! If there is such a shortage in the industry and the shortage is growing then why do we have so many people struggling to get a job? From what I have been hearing in the industry it is not just the license that is the issue but the other parts of transportation. I believe that is where many of the new drivers are missing the boat. They are missing the importance of what makes a person in the industry successful. It’s not that the schools are not teaching new students the skills they need but many of the students focus so much on the license portion of the course that they dismiss the other functions that are presented. Comments like these are common in classrooms across the country, “Dispatch will tell me where to go.” They may tell you where to go but they won’t tell you the best way to get there. The reason so many are having trouble getting positions is the back end of their resumes. They have a license but they haven’t taken care of past criminal charges, or they aren’t putting forward special skills that may make them of interest to potential employers. Many times they feel it doesn’t apply to their new profession as a professional driver. What we need to be sharing and possibly training for are other positions in transportation. Take the story of a women we will call Linda. She had a management position at a large company in the U.S. that got downsized and she unfortunately lost her position. She came back to Canada and began training as professional driver. Once hired on with a carrier they found she had many other skills that she gained while in prior roles. The company
was smart enough to see she could offer more in other positions and made her a Recruiter six months into position as a professional driver. She has now gone on to owning her own company within the transportation field. So when you are building your resume for employment don’t short yourself by hiding skills that may get you into other positions in a company. Driving is just one of many positions needed in the transportation industry and in itself can be a lifelong position or a stepping stone to other positions. When writing your resume highlight those area of skills that you have learned in the past that may be of interest. That may include presentation skills, customer service courses, safety positions, or past positions in security. Even if those positions were far down the line in your past from where you are now I would include them if they are relatable to your future career. Many career counsellors will tell you not to make your resume too long or a certain format. To me the resume is meant to showcase your talents and if you have so many talents that it takes more than one page then so be it. @roadtoday

For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

Broken Ribs R
ib fractures are a fairly common injury. A broken rib occurs when one or more of the bones in the rib cage are cracked or broken. In the majority of the cases, broken ribs are mild cracks that are painful but not life threatening. The most common cause of broken ribs is direct trauma to the chest or ribcage. Athletes that participate in contact sports such as hockey and football are at an increase risk. Slips and falls are also a common cause of broken ribs. In fact, I recently had a patient, who is a professional truck driver, crack three ribs after falling off the deck of his flat bed trailer. Ribs can also be broken from repetitive trauma such as frequent golfing or rowing or even from severe coughing. Finally, motor vehicle accidents account for the majority of severe rib fractures due to the increased amount of forces that are present during the collision. The pain that is associated with a broken rib is usually described as a small localized tender spot in the rib area that begins after trauma. The pain usually worsens when you take a deep breath, bend and twist your body or directly press on the tender area. In most cases, fractured ribs will heal without treatment within one or two months. In severe fractures in which the rib bone is completely broken, the potentially sharp end of the bone could puncture or lacerate blood vessels or internal organs. Both of these conditions could be life threatening thus, it is important to seek medical attention if you suspect a broken rib and you experience pressure or squeezing in the center for your chest or significant difficulty breathing. If your physician suspects a broken rib, he or she may order an x-ray or other diagnostic tests to confirm the diagnosis. Surgery
is only required in the most severe cases. Most of the time pain relieving medication is all that is required. It is important to control pain in order to be able to breathe deeply enough to prevent developing pneumonia. If oral medications are not sufficient to control the pain, your doctor may recommend injections of long lasting anaesthesia around the nerves that supply the ribs. The good news is that even severe rib fractures usually heal within six weeks. Although it is not possible to prevent all rib fractures, there are a few simple tips to keep in mind. First of all make sure you keep your bones strong by getting enough calcium in your diet from food and supplements. Also, try and prevent slips and falls by wearing proper footwear. Lastly, when participating in contact sports, it is important to wear the proper protective equipment. Until next time, drive safely.
