elcome to the November 2011 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing face of trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. One person dies every three hours on Canadian roads, that’s seven people a day, 2,800 people a year. Another 195,000 people a year are hurt – often seriously. Simple actions, such as paying attention while in your vehicle or near a roadway, wearing seat belts, not drinking and driving, not talking on your cell phone or text messaging, can help reduce the number of deaths. Most Canadians wear their seat belts, but those who don’t make up 40 per cent of all traffic deaths. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians can all help by being more careful and by following the rules of the road. We can save lives by rethinking the way we drive. One way to do that is to participate in the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims, which is being held on November 23rd this year. Visit our facebook page to learn about various activities. Natural Resources Canada’s FleetSmart program has recently entered into an agreement with Serco DES Inc., whereby, Ontario’s Drive Test Centres have launched a exciting series of fuel efficiency education and awareness activities targeting entry-level drivers of heavy-duty
commercial vehicles. The goal of the project is to give truck drivers the information and tools to encourage fuel-saving driving practices every time they get behind the wheel. The activites consist of the distribution of free educational materials, SmartDriver training workshops and “Parking Lot Talk” seminars at Ontario’s busiest truck licencing facilities. We welcome this great initiative aimed at creating education and awareness and hope the benefits will be maximized by industry professionals. Road Today Media Group is once again pleased to extend its support to Operation Red Nose in Brampton - a unique program dedicated against drinking and driving. Essentially, the program is a volunteer driving service provided during the Holiday Season to all drivers who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive their own vehicle. It is an original and free way of getting a safe ride in one’s own vehicle without driving it. For more information on opportunities to participate in Operation Red Nose in Brampton, please refer Page 39. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Good Morning Today’ our award winning weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am for latest trucking and transportation news, laws and regulations. Drive safe and see you next month!

Daimler Trucks North America Adds Second Shift and 350 New Positions at Portland Truck Manufacturing Plant
D
aimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has announced the addition of a second shift and plans to ramp up production at its Portland Truck Manufacturing Plant in Portland, Ore., creating approximately 350 new jobs at the facility by the end of 2012. The additional workers represent a nearly 50 percent increase in personnel at the plant and will include approximately 330 shop employees, and an additional 20 engineering and support positions to facilitate increased production. The Swan Island facility exclusively produces heavy-duty Western Star brand Class 8 trucks for use in mining, logging, oil field and construction, as well as on-highway trucks and other specialized vehicles, representing about 2 percent of North American truck sales this year. DTNA’s Western Star launched its newest vehicle, the 4700, earlier this year to enthusiastic customer reviews.
INSURANCE
The increase in production capacity and hiring comes in response to a strong and steady rise in Western Star orders throughout 2011 and company expectations for continued growth in 2012. Western Star trucks are sold internationally with key sales in the U.S., Canada, Australia, South America, South Africa and Indonesia. The Portland plant currently employs approximately 700 shop employees and 50 engineers, managers and support staff. The current hiring activity is the first time since 2006 that DTNA has had open-market hiring for shop positions at this plant. Hiring of new employees will begin in November and the new production shift is slated to be at full capacity by February 2012. A second wave of hiring is planned for next summer to support the projected increase in demand. !

CTA Encouraged by Meeting with CBP Commissioner Alliance urges progressive approaches for “trusted traders”
A
s the American and Canadian governments prepare to announce the details of a new perimeter security deal, the Canadian Trucking Alliance recently met with Alan Bersin, commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to discuss several outstanding border issues that continue to affect Canadian motor carriers and thicken congestion at trade gateways. Overall, CTA is encouraged with the Commissioner’s stated willingness to look into issues that have long been a challenge for Canadian carriers operating south of the border. Some of the topics CTA addressed with Mr. Bersin, include: A solution to the issue of repositioning empty foreign trailers by Canadianbased drivers engaged in international commerce; the burdensome requirement that all liquid cargo residues in empty tanker trailers, no matter how minimal, be manifested prior to entering the U.S.; reestablishing the once-common practice of in-transit domestic shipments which travel through parts of the U.S. in between two Canadian points; and mutual recognition and harmonization of “trusted trader” programs between Canada and the U.S. On the latter issue, Mr. Bersin was receptive to CTA’s concerns and assured that solutions would be outlined in the “Beyond the Border” security initiative soon to be announced by President Barack Obama and Prime Minster Stephen Harper. He hinted this would involve streamlining some aspects of the U.S. CustomsTrade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program and the Canadian Partners in Protection (PIP), as well as the bi-national Free And Secure Trade (FAST) program. He also suggested that new preinspection and pre-clearance measures for credentialed transporters would be part of the action plan, but emphasised he would like to see more carriers and shippers certified under these voluntary trusted trader programs in order to take advantage of the benefits. “We continue to be impressed by Mr. Bersin and his candour,” says CTA president and CEO David Bradley. “He seemed to share our opinion that the best way to approach security is to isolate the bad guys and let certified trusted carriers move www.roadtoday.com
across the border more quickly. He also talked about significantly increasing participation in the trusted trader programs, which is encouraging.” Some headway was made on a few other issues CTA has repeatedly addressed with U.S. officials, including greater flexibility in re-positioning foreign empty trailers and examining different approaches towards in-transit shipments and residue reporting requirements for trusted traders. “Mr. Bersin indicated he does want to find a ‘balanced way’ of dealing with these issues,” said Bradley. “These are all good signs, but as always, the proof will be in the pudding when the Better Borders Working Group makes its report in the near future.”

New Driver Features Showcased On N
International Prostar+, Transtar Models
avistar showcased several driver-centric features on two of its most popular models—the International ProStar+ and the International TranStar at the 2011 American Trucking Associations (ATA) Management Conference & Exhibition. “Rebounding freight volume, along with the effects of CSA 2010, have resulted in a growing driver shortage among Class 8 fleets,” said Jim Hebe, Navistar senior vice president, North American sales operations. “Customers today are asking us more and more to provide products that will help fleets attract and retain qualified drivers. We believe these product features deliver on that need.” ProStar+ Features Diamond Interior Concept; Includes New Technology, Creature Comforts The International ProStar+ vehicle showcased at this year’s conference features a new Diamond interior trim package design concept, offering diamond-stitched trim on the seats, door panels, and throughout the sleeper cab. The aesthetics put a modern twist on the classic “tuck-and-roll” look, but is also designed for maximum durability and easy cleaning. This interior option will be available for order in mid-2012. Navistar also featured several new driver-centric options that are available for order in ProStar+ today, including: • A premium in-dash GPS system featuring prognostics, fault code and tire pressure monitoring, and a premium stereo featuring XM Radio, iPod/MP3 command and control and multiple speakers. • The MaxxPower Battery Powered HVAC system delivers a best-in-class no-idle heating and cooling solution. In addition, the auto stop/start feature safeguards against battery depletion under extreme temperature conditions by automatically starting the engine to recharge the batteries. This feature assists drivers with sleep apnea by ensuring the truck battery does not unexpectedly deplete overnight due to CPAP machine operation and ensures adequate starting power after extended bunk time. • The Bendix Wingman Advanced collision mitigation system brings together adaptive cruise control with braking features along with collision mitigation braking technology. Bendix Wingman Advanced provides the driver following distance alerts and, if necessary, will apply the brakes to help the driver potentially avoid the collision, or help reduce its severity. • The Bendix all-wheel air disc brake package not only meets the new reduced stopping requirements, but exceeds them. It provides the very best braking performance in its class. • Bendix AutoVue lane departure warning system alerts the driver when his vehicle unintentionally departs a lane to the left or right. • LED exterior lighting that is designed to last 100 times longer and use 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. This feature helps keep drivers in compliance with CSA 2010 regulations by reducing the number of times a bulb goes bad over the life of a vehicle. • A Fontaine 12-inch Ultra NT fifth wheel offers weight savings of up to 50 lbs. or more over competitive products and features a
no-slack feature which reduces the “chugging” caused when a trailer ball has excess room in the fifth wheel, making for a smoother ride for the driver, especially in stop-and-go situations. TranStar Now Features Eagle Interior, In-Dash GPS and Allison TC-10 Transmission Navistar has upgraded the International TranStar with a premium Eagle interior trim package—the same package currently offered on ProStar+ —featuring premium air-ride seats, a woodgrained dashboard, chrome accents and bezels, and an ergonomically-designed “wing panel” over the center console. This interior offers a more premium and more comfortable driving environment for regional haul applications. In addition, TranStar is now available with a new Rand McNally in-dash GPS system with truck-specific map software to helps drivers stay on course and on schedule. Wakefield opens Canada’s first DEF solutionizing facility for H2Blu
W
akefield Canada has opened its H2Blu diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) solutionizing facility in Toronto. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place well ahead of the original business timetable. The plan called for building a facility eventually when H2Blu volume warranted the step; the strength of sales in the first six months has already justified the investment. Wakefield Canada has been marketing its own brand of DEF, H2Blu, for less than half a year and its market success has already accelerated the company’s plans for Canadian production.
Wakefield is able to absolutely control the product’s purity. Purity is critical to the operation of today’s SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) clean diesel vehicles; impurities can cause engines to operate improperly, slow down (derate) or even stop. In addition to the manufacturing equipment, Wakefield has also increased its distribution fleet adding the specialized trucks required for distribution of sensitive DEF. MacDonald noted that the investment in the new facility and trucks is significant for the company but helps strengthen Wakefield’s commitment to manufacturing and distributing vital products to the automotive and heavy-duty sectors. The company’s strong relationships within the HD and automotive industry, built on the strength of its Castrol lubricants representation, will create synergies that MacDonald anticipates will propel the company into a leadership position in the DEF segment.
Background on Diesel Exhaust Fluid Effective January 2010, the Canadian and U.S. EPA legislated new diesel emission standards for all on-road trucks and buses in North America. These standards have greatly limited the allowable NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen or Nitrogen Oxides) levels, to be emitted from diesel vehicles – trucks of all classes, passenger cars, and buses. These requirements demand that all new road vehicles with diesel engines, from 2010 on, have engines with technology that will ensure the emission standards are met. Most diesel engine manufacturers have focused on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from diesel exhaust. SCR uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and a catalytic converter to achieve the allowable standards. DEF is defined as AUS 32 (Aqueous Urea Solution 32%) made from 32.5% high purity urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. DEF is easily compromised in terms of quality therefore extreme care must be taken in handling and storing to ensure it does not get contaminated. Impurities will cause the fluid not to work properly; even one teaspoon of salt can contaminate a 20,000 L tanker full of DEF - or can cause damage to the SCR catalyst, causing engine problems to the point of reduced engine performance or possibly nullifying engine warranties.

Bob MacDonald, President of Wakefield Canada, cut the ribbon officially opening the high tech facility that will take prilled urea, the raw ingredient in DEF, and process it into ready-to-use H2Blu DEF. The solutionizing facility is housed within Wakefield’s existing lubricant blending plant in Toronto’s Long Branch area. The facility is understood to be the first of its kind in this country. Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

t’s easy to spot cell phone offenders. They whiz past you on the road, yakking away on their device while cutting people off and running red lights. In tight, crowded places, they talk loudly so everyone has no choice but to listen to the latest celebrity gossip. And if you’re out with such offenders, they’ll answer their phone and have a 15-minute conversation while you sit uncomfortably, pretending not to eavesdrop as you pick lint off your shirt. Cell phone offenders definitely earn a bad rap these days. And if you’re one of them, here are some tips to banish the wrongs and make it right: 1 Resist the urge to answer every call. If your phone rings while you’re out with a friend or on a date, let your voicemail pick up the call. It is poor etiquette to answer the call and talk for longer than a few minutes. Respect the time of the person who is talking to you face-to-face. 2 Focus on driving. Talking or texting on the road is a major distraction and can cost you a ticket or demerit points in some provinces. It also risks your safety and the safety of those who share the road with you. 3 Use your cell phone for a good cause. Donating via text message is all the rage now and you can support charities like Christian Children’s Fund of Canada that provide hope to the world’s poor. Text “CCFC” to 45678 to make a $10 donation. Terms at: www.mobilegiving.ca.

Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.
What’s in a Consultant?
N o w a d a y s many companies hire consultants on a regular basis to provide information and opinions on a variety of products and services. In the transportation market alone there are many consultants especially in the field of safety and driver training that are either employed or freelance to many industry clients. Whether you’re big or small at some point in your business career you will need the help of a consultant to help keep your business running profitably. So if you do decide you need a consultant what should you look for, what types of things do you need to know. First take the price equation out of the picture, not that you shouldn’t focus on price, but that should not be your initial focus. Price can be evaluated after other areas of expertise have been established. The first area of expertise is knowledge, does this person focus on a few areas of expertise or a list of 100 topics. Many of us have few areas of strong topics that we are known for in the industry. Does the consultant work regularly in your industry? I see this many times companies will bring in someone from outside of their industry to give a presentation, sometimes you can get away with that depending on the reason for the session but for important topics try to get someone from the industry you are in so that the audience can relate better
to the presenter. Will the presenter relate to your audience? If the person giving a presentation can’t relate to the people in the audience your message won’t have a hope in getting across.
When looking at the work a consultant may do away from presenting, make sure you are able to track progress of the work, did they do their job? Are they following the timelines set out during the proposal stage, are they giving regular reports and did they explain everything up
front as to what will be done and how it will be done? Many business owners especially owner operators feel they don’t need a consultant to help them, that the cost outweighs the profits. Well, that is the wrong way to think of hiring a consultant and like I said before, price is the last evaluation on the list. A consultant for your business may be the best thing you could do to help make your business successful. A consultant will bring a number of things to the table. First he will bring a fresh set of eyes to your business, you may have been too close to the business to see potential problems. Second a good consultant will set you on a track to success by creating an action plan and a review plan to make sure you are staying on track. Next your consultant will be someone of high integrity that you can trust and is dedicated to seeing your business be successful. Think of a consultant as your personal success manager. A good consultant is like a good accountant, if he knows his stuff then you will save money instead of spend money. The first step on your end is to make the call and then trust him to be there for you.

ROAD TODAY NOVEMBER 2011
Driverless future – are we ready? T
echnological advances have made it possible for a vehicle to run without a driver, but is a driverless future actually desirable? Volvo Trucks says that making vehicles more autonomous is perhaps not a question of excluding drivers, but rather of emphasizing their importance. The history of autonomous vehicles dates back to 1970s Japan, and various projects are currently underway at universities, research institutes and high-tech companies around the world. Hundreds of thousands of driverless kilometres have been clocked up, and proponents of the technology believe that such vehicles will increase road capacity, reduce congestion, and most importantly improve road safety by eliminating driver error. The tech liberals argue that if 90 percent of accidents are due to the human factor - as statistics indicate - why not completely take the driver out of the equation? Opponents, meanwhile, raise concerns about the fallibility of the computerized systems. And who is legally responsible if one of these unmanned vehicles causes an accident? Automated systems like sensors, cameras and radar for monitoring the traffic situation and the vehicle’s surroundings are regarded by many as having some advantages over humans, but Carl Johan Almqvist at Volvo Trucks believes the safest approach is to combine the automated system’s 360-degree awareness with the professional driver’s knowledge and experience. “We believe in the driver and appreciate that the human brain can make decisions that automatic systems struggle with,” he says. “The computer never gets tired, but it can only do things for which it is programmed. As soon as you are outside of normal situations, that is where the driver’s skill comes in. Drivers are often best placed to assess a situation and to choose between slowing down, panic braking or driving round an obstacle.” Volvo Trucks is therefore working on systems that support drivers in situations where they are under-stimulated, such as when stuck in a traffic jam. “When you are moving slowly your mind wanders, you aren’t focused on driving and if the car in front suddenly stops, you might hit it,” says Almqvist. “These are situations where it’s a good idea to support the driver.” ROAD TODAY NOVEMBER 2011
Volvo’s vision of combining a well-trained professional driver with increased automation is being realized through the SARTRE (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) project. The idea behind the project - of which Volvo is a part through its centre for research and innovation, Volvo Technology - is to develop a technology for vehicle platooning - that is, a convoy where a professional driver in a lead vehicle drives a line of other vehicles. Each vehicle in the convoy measures the distance, speed and direction to the car in front, and adjusts accordingly. The vehicles are not physically attached to each other and can leave the procession at any time. But once in the platoon, the following drivers can relax and do other things while the platoon proceeds towards its destination under the expert guidance of the lead driver. Platooning is expected to deliver a number of benefits: road safety will improve as the human factor is minimized; fuel consumption - and therefore also CO2 emissions - will be reduced by up to 20 percent; road congestion will be reduced as vehicles will be only a few metres apart; and the drivers of the following vehicles will be able to rest, work or eat. The technology has been successfully tested with one car following the lead vehicle. Public acceptance and the relevant legislation may, however, be longer in coming. Volvo Trucks participates in several technologically-driven projects such as SARTRE, since the outcome and lessons from such projects are always regarded as valuable knowledge. “Safety is one of Volvo’s core values, so we are investing considerable effort in automation while doing it in the safest possible way,” says Almqvist. “The technology is moving quickly, but getting it to work in a safe way with a human being is our ultimate aim. You should feel as safe as you do when driving yourself, even if it is a computer that is doing the work.” Carl Johan Almqvist points to the autopilot systems used in aviation as a more realistic way forward for the road transport industry. “Today you can push a button and fly on autopilot from when you leave the gate until your arrival at the other end,” he says. “But you still have a pilot. Two, in fact.”

What is ORN?
9pm to 3:00am (last call) www.ornbrampton.org
Features of the service The Operation Red Nose service is not intended just for people who have been drinking alcohol. Any person who does not feel fit to drive, due to fatigue or other reasons, can call. A person may call once, or more than once, during the course of an evening, either to go from one place to another, or simply to go home. The service is free. Donations are accepted and are turned in full to local St. John Ambulance youth programs. The only requirement: the client must show proof of valid insurance and own the vehicle at the time of their call. In other words: no vehicle, no service. Operation Red Nose is not a taxi service, but rather a volunteer driver service for motorists and their vehicles. The client is driven in his or her own vehicle and never in the vehicle of the Operation Red Nose volunteers. Other passengers may also ride in the client’s vehicle (just as long as there are enough seat belts) and will be dropped off before the owner's car is taken to the requested destination. The service is confidential. The volunteers commit to be discreet by signing a form in which they agree not to give any details that could help identify a client.
Operation Red Nose is a unique program that helps to prevent drinking and driving. Essentially, it is a volunteer driving service provided during the Holiday Season to all drivers who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive their own vehicle. It is an original and free way of getting a safe ride in one’s own vehicle without driving it! Since 1984, Operation Red Nose’s mission has been to encourage responsible behaviour with regard to impaired driving in a non-judgmental manner by enabling communities to provide a free and confidential chauffeur service to their members, the financial benefits of which are redistributed to local organizations dedicated to youth.
The Service A CONFIDENTIAL, EFFICIENT AND FREE SERVICE How does the service work? The Operation Red Nose service is provided by a team of three volunteers. Two of them, the client driver and the navigator, ride with the client in his or her vehicle while the other volunteer, the escort driver, follows them behind in their own car to pick the volunteers up at the end of the ride.
Volunteers Needed! Want to get involved with Operation Red Nose Brampton? There’s always room! We will need drivers and navigators, but we also need dispatchers, mascots and mascot handlers. If you are interested in participating in this exciting campaign, please contact Heather LeBlanc at 905-451-3113, ext. 3224 or at heather.leblanc@on.sja.ca.
St. John Ambulance Brampton is pleased to host Operation Red Nose Brampton. 2011 marks their third year as host to this lifesaving program.

Show off A girl in our office got engaged some time ago. She came to office wearing her engagement ring but none of the other women in the office even noticed. Finally, in sheer and total exasperation, she said “Boy!!! It’s so warm in here today, I think I’ll take off my ring.” Dog’s day out An ad in a local newspaper read: “Purebred Police Dog $25.” Thinking it to be a great bargain, Mrs Freeman ordered the dog to be delivered. The next day, a van pulled up and left her the mangiest-looking mongrel she had ever seen. In a rage, she telephoned the man who had placed the ad. “What do you mean by calling that mangy-mutt a purebred police dog?” “Don’t be deceived by his looks, Ma’am,” he replied. “He’s in the Secret Service.” Memory lapse The man looked a little worried when the doctor came in to administer his annual physical, so the first thing the doctor did was to ask whether anything was troubling him. “Doctor, I seem to be getting forgetful. I’m never sure I can remember where I put the car keys, or whether I answered a letter, or where I’m going, or what it is I’m going to do once I get there — if I get there.” “So I really need your help. What can I do?” In his kindliest tone, the doctor answered, “Pay me in advance.” www.roadtoday.com

Sties- No Crying Matter I recently had a driver come into my clinic complaining of pain in his upper eyelid. During the examination I noticed a small red lump on the inside of his eye lid. As it turns out, he had developed a sty or a hordeolum. Sties are a very common condition within the population. It is safe to say that most of us will experience a sty a few times during our life time. There are two categories of sties, internal and external. Internal sties form on the inner lining of the eyelids while external sties form on the outside of the eyelid. Other than their location, the two types of sties tend to cause the same collection of symptoms. The symptoms associated with sties occur rapidly and generally only last from 7-10 days with out treatment. The most common symptoms include a red lump on your eyelid which looks similar in appearance to a pimple, eyelid pain/swelling and tearing of the eyes. Sties are caused by an infection of the sebaceous glands at the base of our eyelashes. Poor hygiene that exposes your eyelids to bacteria is by far the most common cause. Touching or
rubbing your eyes with soiled or dirty hands can transfer bacteria to your eyelids. Contact lens use is also associated with sties. Changing your contact lenses without properly washing your hands can lead to sties.
Similarly, failing to thoroughly clean and disinfect contact lens can lead to the development of sties. Finally, improper use of make up may increase your risk as well. The majority of sties are merely a harmless nuisance. However, it is important to seek medical attention if the sty does not resolve within a weeks time or there is excessive swelling and redness of the eye or surround cheek area. Your doctor will diagnose a sty by performing a detailed physical examination and testing for bacteria. By identifying what type of bacteria is present, your doctor will be able to better recommend a treatment. In most cases, sties will typically resolve
by themselves with no medical treatment. However, in persistent cases, your doctor may recommend antibiotic eye drops or even surgery. Surgery to treat a sty usually involves lancing the sty in order to relieve the pressure and pain. There are a few home remedies that you can perform to help speed up your recovery. First of all, avoid touching or squeezing the sty. Secondly, placing a warm wash cloth over your closed eye may help to relieve pain as well as encourage the sty to drain on its own. Finally, avoid wearing contact lenses and make up until the sty has fully healed. Preventing sties is really quite simple. The key is to avoid introducing bacteria into the eye. By washing your hands with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer several times each day, you will greatly reduce your chances of developing a sty. Also, keeping your contact lenses clean and well disinfected is very important. Lastly, wear proper eye protection when around hazardous or toxic substances. I hope you found this article interesting and informative. Until next month, drive safely.
