Heartiest congratulations to the members and leadership of the Automotive Transportation Service Superintendents Association (ATSSA) for completing 75 glorious years of exploring, promoting and implementing ways and means to enhance maintenance practices involving commercial vehicles and fostering a spirit of fellowship. The ATSSA is comprised of commercial vehicle fleet maintenance supervisors along with others in allied industries - all with a vested interest, in vehicle safety, the environment & in the operating efficiency of such equipment. We encourage industry stakeholders to get involved with the ATSSA and benefit from their rich pool of experience and commitment for a safe working environment. Almost 2,200 people are killed each year on Canada’s roads and highways, and another 170,600 are injured—often seriously. That’s an average of six deaths every day or the equivalent of 30 busloads of people a year. Most of the victims are young drivers and those 75 and older. The social cost of motor vehicle collisions is about $63 billion per year. Around the world, 1.2 million people

die following road crashes every year and the United Nations expects this number to grow if road users don’t change their behaviour and driving practices. Simple actions, such as paying attention while driving, wearing a seat belt and not drinking or consuming drugs and driving can help greatly reduce the number of deaths. Most Canadians wear their seat belts, but those who don’t make up 40 percent of all road victims. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians can all contribute to road safety by being more careful and by following the rules of the road. Canada’s National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims will be held on Wednesday, November 20th. Please observe a moment of silence for those who have died, for the injured, and for the families and friends who have lost so much. We are entering into a festive mood starting with celebration of Diwali, Gurpurab followed soon after by Christmas and New Year parties. Let us resolve not to mix drinking and driving in order to prevent serious injuries and loss of precious human lives. Please plan ahead for a safe ride home as there are many safe alternates available like using a designated driver, taxi service amongst others. Volvo Trucks Announces ‘XE11’
Fuel Efficiency Package for 11-Liter North American Engine president of Volvo Trucks North American Sales & Marketing. “XE11 delivers a proven strategy for reducing fuel consumption.” Volvo first introduced XE packages for its 13-liter D13 and 16-liter D16 engines. To date, more than 24 percent of all Volvopowered trucks ordered in 2013 also feature XE powertrain packages.
Volvo Trucks has expanded its XE – exceptional efficiency – powertrain package lineup with the introduction of XE11 for its 11-liter Volvo D11 engine.

The powertrain package improves fuel efficiency by up to 3 percent. “Demand for XE powertrain packages continues to grow as customers increasingly look to combat fuel costs through optimized truck specifications,” said Gӧran Nyberg,
The XE11 package includes the following components: n Volvo D11 engine with 405 horsepower rating and 1550 lb.-ft. of torque n Volvo I-Shift overdrive transmission with a 0.78:1 ratio n Axle ratios of 2.64 to 2.80 n Proprietary software that facilitates seamless communication between Volvo’s integrated powertrain components. XE packages improve fuel efficiency by lowering engine rpm at a given vehicle speed, a concept Volvo calls “downspeeding.” Possible through the combination of Volvo’s I-Shift automated manual transmission and a Volvo engine with modified software, XE allows the engine to cruise about 200 rpm less than the average truck sold today. Fuel efficiency improves by about 1.5 percent for every 100 rpm of downspeeding, so customers spec’ing the XE package can expect up to a 3 percent improvement when compared with another overdrive transmission in a similar operation. Maiden Natural Gas Vehicle Canada Conference Opens New Gateway of Opportunities The 1st Annual Natural Gas Vehicle Canada Conference & Exhibition (NGV) held from October 1 to 2 at The Ritz Carlton, Toronto brought together industry’s leading experts and a host of specific and dedicated sessions tailored directly to address the most pressing NGV challenges.
T
he Natural Gas Vehicle Market in Canada has gained tremendous momentum over the past year, fuelled by regional incentives and large scale investments from some of Canada’s largest fleet operators including Robert, Bison and Vedder transport who are truly embracing LNG as the transport fuel of the future. As compared with conventional fuels, natural gas technology offers 30-40% fuel cost savings and 20-25% GHG emissions reductions. According to information shared at the conference, Canadian companies have invested over $350M in vehicles, infrastructure and R&D to date. The conference hosted by FC Business Intelligence brought forward a number of topics and key challenges that need to be addressed in order to develop a profitable and sustainable market for NGV’s: including

When preparing your permit book for your truck or trucks, you should have the following in the permit book at all times. I suggest you prepare a Table of Contents, and number each page. 2013 Kenworth Road Tour visits Mississauga The Kenworth Road Tour travelling across the United States and Canada made a stop at Kenworth Truck Centre in Mississauga on October 15th during a special event well attended by customers and industry patrons.
T
he interactive, self-guided exhibit housed in a state-of-theart, double-expanding, 53-foot tour trailer with nearly 1,000 square-feet of exhibit space provided customers to learn more about the key features of both the T880 and T680, see the new 12.9-liter PACCAR MX-13 engine, and experience 90 years of Kenworth history. The new Kenworth T880 is designed to help maximize performance in applications as dump, mixer, refuse, and heavy haul. The T880 dump truck has a standard 122.5-inch BBC hood and a PACCAR MX-13 engine rated at 500-hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque. The T880 flatbed hauler features the 116.5-inch BBC short hood optimized for the PACCAR MX-13 engine. That truck’s
engine is rated at 455-hp and 1,650 lb-ft of torque. The PACCAR MX-13 engine offers excellent fuel efficiency, high reliability and durability, lightweight design, and low cost of ownership. Transporting the 53-foot tour trailer exhibit was the T680 52-inch sleeper equipped with a PACCAR MX-13 engine rated at 500-hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque. This new sleeper configuration joins the T680 day cab and T680 76-inch sleeper offerings. All are designed to maximize performance in line haul, pickup and delivery, and regional hauling operations. Navistar First To Market With Portfolio Of Fully Automated Transmission Options Offerings increase fuel economy in a variety of applications

avistar has announced that it is the first to market with a portfolio of fully automatic and automated manual transmissions for a range of applications. The options will be available on International ProStar and International TranStar vehicles. “Our portfolio of fully automated transmissions reduces the variance between expert drivers and first-timers by electronically monitoring vehicle speed, grade, weight and more to select the best gear for the engine. This not only improves efficiency, but it will extend the life of the driveline,” said Bill Kozek, president of North America Truck and Parts, Navistar The company’s portfolio of fully automatic and automated manual transmissions includes Cummins Eaton Smart Advantage, Eaton UltraShift Plus LSE and Allison TC10 transmissions. Cummins Eaton Smart Advantage Available on the International ProStar, the Cummins Eaton Smart Advantage is a 10-speed automated manual transmission

paired with the Cummins ISX15 engine. Providing significant benefits across the board for linehaul and regional haul fleets, the engine and transmission share critical data, determining the torque curve and power level needed to match real-time load demand. This optimizes performance and fuel economy as a total unit. Cummins and Eaton estimate that drivers can achieve between three and six percent improved fuel economy. Navistar is the first to market with this product combination and it is available for order now. A standard five-year or 750,000 mile warranty is also included. Eaton UltraShift Plus LSE Eaton’s UltraShift Plus LSE transmission is designed exclusively for Navistar. The new 16-speed direct drive automated mechanical transmission maximizes fuel efficiency in linehaul applications and Eaton testing has validated drivers can achieve six percent improved fuel economy. Designed with a small 17 percent step between gears, the transmission optimizes a diesel engine’s most efficient RPM zone to reduce fuel consumption.
The UltraShift Plus LSE has 16 forward gears and two reverse gears, and an overall ratio of 14.40. The standard warranty is five-year/750,000 miles for the transmission and three-year/350,000 miles for the clutch. This option is now available for order on the International ProStar. Allison TC10 The first fully automatic transmission for the Class 8 on-highway segment, the Allison TC10 provides a blended architecture with full-power shifts, a torque converter and a twin countershaft gear box. Available on International ProStar and International TranStar vehicles with MaxxForce 13 engines with SCR, its 10 forward speeds and two reverse make the TC10 ideal for distribution applications where the tractor-trailer splits its work cycle between city and highway conditions. A standard five-year or 750,000 mile warranty is also included. International trucks with the Allison TC10 will be available for delivery in early 2014. RT

BCTA Seeks 25 Immigrant Truck Drivers to Test New Skills Assessment Tool The BC Trucking Association (BCTA) has developed a new skills assessment tool called IDRIVE and is looking for 25 recent immigrants with professional truck-driving experience to participate in a pilot test to be scheduled in November or December 2013.

CTA is working with BC motor carriers to find ways to address a shortage of professional drivers that could run as high as 33,000 across Canada by 2020, according to a Conference Board of Canada study. To assist, BCTA has partnered with the Asia Pacific Gateway Skills Table to develop a truck driver skill and experience assessment tool with input from motor carriers. IDRIVE stands for “Immigrant Driver Readiness – Industry Validation and Engagement,” and it reviews the professional experience of drivers who are new to Canada, to provide them with a verified report on their readiness for employment in BC. IDRIVE tests industry knowledge, essential skills, employability characteristics (including customer service skills) and driving skills. IDRIVE is made possible by the Immigrant Employment Council of BC. Funding is
provided by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia. Participants must not be employed currently in the trucking industry, but must live in BC and have a BC Class 1 commercial driver’s licence – or be willing to obtain one within the timeframe of the pilot project, which includes a road test. Tom was running late, he left too late the night before and with a rash of problems following him from Customs to a truck repair he was pushing it to get to his delivery by the appointed time.
A
rriving in Chicago at 9:00am for a delivery appointment is no easy task and doing it in a tractor trailer is even worse. It doesn’t help that the clock in the truck is reading 8:30am and he is still 30 minutes away from the customer. Tom was beginning to get aggressive with his driving. He had made an improper lane change a few miles back and had caused some tension in drivers around him. He was determined to make it however, and was at a point where traffic was starting to break. He sped up to make up lost time. Ten more minutes and he would make it. His customer was a national account and if you missed the delivery window it would cost money and time to make it right. At last he could see the exit he needed, four more exits on the right and he would be there, it would be tight, but he may just sneak in there before the allotted time. Driving much faster than he should have been he began to move over for the exit, as the blast from the car’s horn behind him reminded him again that he had cut his lane change too tight. The tight lane change didn’t stop him there as he had to do it again to squeeze onto the ramp. This made him very unpopular with the other motorists around him especially the one that had to swerve and almost hit another car. He seemed oblivious to the car horns at this point. As Tom made it into his delivery he was now flustered and bursting into the receiving area with his paperwork and that didn’t make him anymore welcome. As he related to the Receiver the bad trip he had experienced to get there, the receiver didn’t show the same concern. While Tom was inside, outside
an observer was looking at his truck and taking notes. After Tom had left, an Executive from the company came down to the dock to talk with the receiving department employees. After asking some questions about the driver that just delivered it was explained how frazzled the driver was. The Receiver mentioned this is not the first time the company had done this so the Executive said he would take care of it. A phone call a short time later explained to the driver’s Supervisor that the company would not put up with careless driving with their products and their contract was being terminated. It turns out the person that the driver cut off was the Executive of the company. The trucking company lost a million dollar contract with the company.
As professional drivers it is your duty to remain calm and professional while on the roadways. Careless driving can kill. Learn techniques to keep you calm while driving and plan your routes for the least amount of problems. We have all come across situations such as this and they can be dismissed as a bad day for most, but if you feel that this is becoming habit then you need to look at your time management techniques. In this story the contract was lost, but it could have been much worse. It could have been a life. Time management is critical in the world of transportation and safety needs to be at the forefront. MACK GuardDog Connect Unleashed Bulldog’s Proactive Approach to Truck Maintenance Takes Another Bite Out of Customer Operating Costs

ack Trucks has launched MACK GuardDog Connect, a telematics solution built upon the existing MACK GuardDog maintenance monitoring system, keeping wheels and revenues rolling by strengthening communication among the truck, driver, customer and dealer. GuardDog Connect enables quick diagnosis of issues, proactive scheduling for repairs and confirmation that needed parts are in stock and ready to install, all while the truck is still on the job. “We at Mack are committed to having our customers’ backs,” said John Walsh, Mack vice president of marketing. “Our new telematics-based solution, GuardDog Connect, clearly demonstrates our determination to ensure that our customers keep their trucks on the road where they should be.” Like a true watch dog, the GuardDog maintenance monitoring system keeps an eye on the truck and makes the driver aware of potential issues. If the situation is something like a clogged filter, low fluid level or upcoming recommended service interval, GuardDog sends a message to the driver via the MACK Co-Pilot display on the dash. The new GuardDog Connect solution, which is fully integrated into the truck when manufactured, kicks in should a
more serious situation be detected. This triggers a series of events that starts with an automatic alert to MACK OneCall, Mack’s 24/7 customer support center staffed by trained support specialists. Upon receiving the notification and while the driver continues working, the Mack OneCall team immediately evaluates the situation. A case is opened in the MACK ASIST web-based fleet service management platform, the owner or fleet service manager is contacted and the repair planning process begins through a customer-chosen dealer. This process includes verification that a bay and the necessary parts are available while Mack OneCall electronically sends repair instructions to the dealer. Every step of the process happens within minutes of the initial GuardDog Connect heads-up and is constantly managed by Mack OneCall. Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

XRS and Navistar Testing Real-Time Fleet Diagnostics System OnCommand Connection Is the First Single Remote Diagnostics Portal With an Open Architecture Platform

RS Corporation has announced at the American Trucking Association (ATA) Management Conference and Exhibition that the company is real-time testing a new remote diagnostics platform from Navistar, Inc. The new system -- Navistar OnCommand Connection -- is the first single remote diagnostics portal to use an open architecture system, allowing direct interfaces with existing telematics providers. The system is designed to increase vehicle uptime by supporting quicker repairs and controlling maintenance and repair costs. Navistar OnCommand Connection will be available beginning in January 2014. Due to EPA regulations and OBD compliance requirements, there are an unusually large number of different fault codes, making diagnostics complex for drivers and fleet managers. Navistar’s OnCommand Connection helps de-code fault data in real time to communicate each fault code’s level of severity and determine

A dashboard of capabilities for customers includes the ability to view action steps as well as the location of vehicles requiring attention on a map in proximity to service locations. Knee T Bursitis Bursitis of the knee is simply an inflammation of one or more of the bursae that are located near the knee. It is most common in the bursa over the kneecap or on the inside part of the knee joint. A bursa is a fluid-filled sac that is located around the joints of the body.
he symptoms of knee bursitis can vary from person to person. Also, the particular location of the affected bursa will determine the type and severity of the symptoms experienced. However, most patients suffering from knee bursitis report that the affected knee feels warm to the touch and appears noticeably swollen. The pain associated with knee bursitis usually occurs when the knee joint is moved or if pressure is applied directly to the inflamed area. Most cases of knee bursitis are caused by repetitive injuries to the bursa. Jobs that require frequent kneeling such as a flooring installer increase the risk of developing knee bursitis. Another common cause of knee bursitis is direct trauma to the knee. It is common for soccer and football players to develop knee bursitis due to the physical nature of the sport. Other less common causes of knee bursitis include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and bacterial infection. It is important to note that excessive body weight also seems to increase the risk of knee bursitis. The diagnosis of knee bursitis is often reached by taking a detailed medical history and performing a physical examination. If your physician feels that it is necessary to rule out more serious causes, he or she may recommend further diagnostic testing. MRI, X-ray and ultrasound are commonly ordered tests. If your physician suspects an infection, he or she may perform a needle aspiration in
which a small sample of the liquid is removed from the knee and analysed. If you are diagnosed with knee bursitis, the first form of treatment is to rest the knee in order to reduce the inflammation. Ice application and compression will also aid in the reduction of swelling. If these conservative treatments are unsuccessful, medications may be prescribed. Corticosteroid injection directly into the affected bursa may help to reduce the inflammation. Antibiotics may be prescribed if infection is suspected. Physical therapy may also be suggested by your doctor to help increase the flexibility and strength of the knee which may reduce the risk of recurrence. In very rare cases of chronic knee bursitis, surgical removal of the bursa is required. As I always say, prevention is the best treatment. There are a few prevention strategies that you can keep in mind while performing physical tasks. First of all, take frequent breaks to rest and stretch out your legs. Avoid extended periods of time on your knees. Wearing protective knee pads during high risk sports or while kneeling will also reduce your risk. Finally, avoid repetitive or excessive bending of the knees which places significant strain and pressure on the bursae. Although knee bursitis is not a life threatening condition, it can become very debilitating if left untreated. If you suspect that you are suffering from knee bursitis and have tried these self help tips, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. RT Until next time, drive safely.
