We wish the organization continued success. Beginning on January 1, 2016, Ontario is launching a new pilot to allow for the testing of automated vehicles on Ontario roads. Automated vehicles are driverless or self-driving vehicles that are capable of detecting the surrounding environment using artificial intelligence, sensors and global positioning system coordinates. We welcome this initiative considering the fact that automated and connected vehicle technologies have the potential to help improve fuel efficiency as well as reduce traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions and driver distraction. As these technologies becomes widespread, we hope the consumers, government and manufacturers will also work together to ensure drivers have control over their privacy and personal information, which is becoming an increasingly rare commodity. Canada’s National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims will be held on November 18th. Since 2007, the third Wednesday of November has been set aside for Canadians to pause and remember those individuals who have lost their lives on one of our nation’s roads, while also remembering friends, family and colleagues who have been affected by these tragedies. The objective of the day is to raise awareness in Canada and specifically among those with high-risk driving behaviours as to the impact of road crashes on their communities. Avoiding the four high risk driving behaviours can save lives. When it comes to road crashes, the following are key to avoid: distracted driving, aggressive driving, impaired driving and non-use of seat belts. Ontario is moving forward with its plan to help lower auto insurance rates by requiring all insurance companies in the province to provide a discount for drivers who buy and install winter tires, starting from January 1st. Winter tires enhance safety and reduce the likelihood of collisions by improving traction, braking and handling in frost, snow, slush and under cold and icy conditions. Winter driving in Canada means braving conditions that are sometimes less than ideal. Are you and your vehicles fully prepared for the deep-freeze challenges? If not, please go through the tips appearing on Page 30 which will help to keep you accident-free as well as confident in the driver’s seat. New Detroit Connect Features Enhance Vehicle Insights; Deliver Over-the-Air
Programming Capabilities
Detroit Connect has introduced new features for its Virtual Technician remote diagnostic system to further improve integration and communications.
A
new portal will provide Detroit Connect users additional information about overall fleet health, as well as enable them to take a deeper dive into specific fault events communicated via Virtual Technician. The portal, available on all Freightliner and Western Star models specified with Detroit engines, will also allow users to view and archive Detroit Diesel Engine Control (DDEC) reports, which use diagnostics to further analyze driver and vehicle performance. The portal, which will serve as the access point for all services offered by Detroit Connect, will also include options for communications, reporting and subscription management customization. Detroit Connect is piloting the portal with select customers beginning now, through early 2016, with an anticipated rollout to all customers by spring 2016.
In addition to the portal, DTNA is developing a new telematics platform that will be available on select truck models in 2017. The platform will have new connected vehicle communications hardware that can be used globally. This will enable integration with third-party applications, and will reduce the need for additional hardware. The new telematics platform – which will utilize cellular service connectivity – will mark the introduction flash over the air capabilities, including remote vehicle parameter settings, remote downloading of DDEC reports, and remote flashing of firmware for electronic controllers. “Vehicle connectivity is going to continue to have a significant impact on how customers do business, and DTNA will continue to push the envelope to be part of that evolution,” said Matt Pfaffenbach, director, telematics for Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA). Ontario First to Test Automated Vehicles on Roads in Canada

ntario is launching a new pilot to allow for the testing of automated vehicles on Ontario roads. Automated vehicles are driverless or self-driving vehicles that are capable of detecting the surrounding environment using artificial intelligence, sensors and global positioning system coordinates. Automated and connected vehicle technologies have the potential to help improve fuel efficiency as well as reduce traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions and driver distraction. Beginning on January 1, 2016, Ontario will lead Canada as the first province to test automated vehicles and related technology on-road. Currently there are nearly 100 companies and institutions involved in the connected vehicle and automated vehicle industry in the province. The pilot will enable those companies to conduct research and development in Ontario rather than in competing jurisdictions, as well as support opportunities to bring automated vehicles to market. The province is also pledging an additional $500,000 in funding to the Ontario Centres of Excellence Connected Vehicle/Automated Vehicle Program, in addition to the $2.45 million in funding recently provided. The program brings academic institutions and business together to promote and encourage innovative transportation technology. Ensuring Ontario’s place as a world leader in the auto, transportation, information and communications technology sectors are part of the government’s plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan includes investing in people’s talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario’s history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement RT savings plan.

GM and Navistar Reach Commercial Vehicle Agreement G Conventional Cab trucks to enter market in 2018
eneral Motors Co. and Navistar have reached a long-term agreement to develop and assemble future medium-duty, conventional cab Class 4/5 commercial vehicles, allowing Navistar to strengthen its product lineup and GM to expand its Chevrolet commercial truck portfolio. “Bringing medium-duty conventional cab trucks back into the portfolio strengthens Chevrolet’s commitment to providing commercial customers with more choices and one-stop shopping for a versatile lineup of trucks, vans and crossovers,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet and Commercial sales. The future trucks will be jointly developed using Navistar’s expertise in rolling chassis configurations and manufacturing capabilities, and GM’s commercial components and engines. The vehicles are slated for production in 2018 and will be manufactured at Navistar’s facility in Springfield, Ohio. According to Navistar, it plans to add 300 jobs and invest more than $12 million in facility upgrades and state-of-the-art equipment to produce the new vehicles. “Our collaboration with GM is another example of our customercentric, open integration approach – providing our customers with “We Care About Our Customers”

Volvo Trucks Launches Certified Uptime Centers to Boost Customer Uptime
V
olvo Trucks will begin introducing Volvo Certified Uptime Centers within its dealer network in 2016 as part of its ongoing commitment to maximizing customer uptime. Dealer locations will receive the certification after adopting a standardized process designed to provide more transparent information to the customer and complete repairs more quickly. Customers arriving at a Volvo Certified Uptime Center will experience more than just a quick diagnosis of a truck’s service issue. The centers will enhance the service experience for any repair, and will utilize improved service workflows supported by Remote Diagnostics, Volvo’s telematics-based proactive diagnostic and repair planning system. In addition, Certified Uptime Centers will be supported by the recently announced integration between

Truck Diagnostics System (TDS) and Volvo ASIST; Volvo’s service management platform. Volvo Certified Uptime Centers feature dedicated uptime bays, where trucks requiring repair time of four hours or less are serviced immediately, eliminating the “first come, first served” practice that is common in vehicle repair today. Currently, Volvo is piloting the certification at 13 dealerships throughout the U.S. and Canada. Pilot locations have seen an immediate increase in the number of trucks being fully repaired during a 24-hour period, as well as an increase in positive customer feedback. The Volvo Certified Uptime Centers pilot will continue through 2015, with the start of the rollout of the certification to the Volvo Trucks dealer network targeted for 2016. RT

Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Releases 2015 International Roadcheck Results Driver and Vehicle Out-of-Service Rates for Level I Inspections Lowest on Record
O
n June 2-4, 2015, commercial motor vehicle inspectors across North America completed 69,472 truck and bus inspections during International Roadcheck 2015, the annual 72-hour enforcement and safety outreach event carried out by members of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). Of the 69,472 total inspections, 44,989 were North American Standard Level I Inspections, which is the most thorough roadside inspection. Of Level I Inspections, inspectors found 1,623 or 3.6 percent of drivers and 9,732 or 21.6 percent of vehicles with out-of-service (OOS) violations, historically the lowest rates for which CVSA has data, back to 1991. Of all inspections, 777 seatbelt violations were issued. Level I Inspections include a 37-step procedure that involves an examination of both the driver’s record of duty status and the safety of the vehicle. Drivers are required to provide items such as their license, endorsements, medical card and hours-of-service documentation, and are checked for seat belt usage and the use of alcohol and/or drugs. The vehicle inspection includes checking items such as the braking system, cargo securement, coupling devices, exhaust system, frame, fuel system, lights, safe loading, steering mechanism, suspension, tires, van and open-top trailer bodies, wheels and rims, windshield wipers, and emergency exits, electrical cables and systems in engine and battery compartments, and loose

or temporary seating on buses. Other inspections conducted included Level II walk-around, Level III driver-only, and Level V vehicle-only inspections. Each year, International Roadcheck places special emphasis on a category of violations. The special emphasis for International Roadcheck 2015 was cargo securement. While checking for compliance with safe loading regulations is always part of roadside inspections, CVSA highlighted cargo safety as a reminder to drivers and carriers. The proper loading and securing of cargo on vehicles is a matter of public safety. For many types of loads, particularly those that are not sealed or otherwise inaccessible to the driver, regulations require the driver to stop within the first several miles of a trip and recheck
the tie downs and other load-securing equipment. During International Roadcheck 2015 a special emphasis was placed on reminding carriers about and enforcing regulations on proper load securement. During the event, inspectors issued 2,439 violations for load securement. The leading load securement violations, by number of violations issued, were: (1) failure to prevent shifting/loss of load; (2) failure to secure truck equipment (tarps, dunnage, doors, tailgates, spare tires); (3) damaged tie downs (typically unacceptable wear on chain or cuts and tears on web straps); (4) insufficient tie downs; and (5) loose tie downs. Load securement enforcement is a normal part of Level I Inspections, but securing cargo and equipment are vital to safe operations. RT

Preparing for Winter
O
ne of the most important rules for safe driving through the winter is to be prepared.Even when you are well prepared, you may still spin out or get stuck in the snow. It can really help to take supplies on the road in case of an emergency, including the following: • Charged cell phone • Ice scraper, snow brush, flashlight, extra blankets • Hat, gloves/mitts and extra clothing • Canned food (and a can opener), energy bars • Safety flares or warning lights, waterproof matches • Medication (if you need it) and a first aid kit • Paper towels or cloth, reflective vest • Extra windshield washer fluid and lock de-icer Some things you may not have thought of include... Candles, Matches and a Tin Can Candles not only give you light, but they also raise the temperature inside the cab a few degrees. You can use a tin can as a holder for the candle. Old, Heavy Socks Socks can be used as mitts, window cleaners, draft blockers, and of course, extra socks for your chilly feet. if you need them. Throw a few heavy ones in a box and keep them around. Kitty Litter Kitty litter is a great traction aid. Throw a few handfuls under the drive wheels on an icy road to help you get moving. Collapsible Shovel Many collapsible shovels feature graphite blades and folding or telescoping handles. Some are quite sturdy, as well as being light. Shovels like these aren’t going to move icebergs, but they’ll clear snow from your wheels, so you can get going a little more easily. Lip Balm Chapped lips are annoying and distracting. Having some lip balm on hand during the winter makes a big difference if you’ve been out in the wind.

Financial planning is a discipline designed around budgeting to meet financial goals. For comprehensive financial planning, seek the advice of a Certified Financial Planner with the CFP designation. As a family man, husband and father of two, financial planning is important to me and outlines our financial well-being and areas requiring improvement. When I provide financing for truck drivers, our conversations revolve around mileage and income generated, weighed against the expenses that arise from fuel, insurance, maintenance and truck loan payments. These expenses need to be covered each and every month. With this in mind, one aspect of financial planning often overlooked is what steps to take regarding the expenses and income if the trucker is injured or sick or an unforeseen accident results in a loss of the truck. Financial planning isn’t always about calculating revenue and expenses. Truck drivers need to consider questions such as, how will I make my truck payment if I am injured or sick? How will I cover any shortfall from an insurance payout that does not cover all expenses owing on the truck after it has been written off? Where will I obtain the money to buy a new truck? These questions are not always addressed until a critical moment, and in many instances, the lack of planning for such situations can leave the truck driver in a financial crisis. Today, coverages such as gap coverage, down payment protection, and life and disability insurance are available to help protect the trucker’s loan obligations and ultimately protect his or her credit. Credit protection is paramount to a trucker’s ability to continue buying and replacing vehicles. Every trucker knows that a better credit profile means lower truck monthly payments and, ultimately more left over in their pocket. Gap coverage helps the trucker with shortfalls /roadtoday
from the insurance company when a payout is not enough to cover the full amount owing on the truck. Down payment protection will often help the trucker recover some of the deposit used to purchase the truck. Recouping these funds provides a more seamless transition when purchasing a replacement truck. These solutions address a write-off situation, if the trucker becomes ill or injured. How will fixed costs such as truck insurance be covered? How will the truck payment be covered? Today, disability insurance coverage protects the truck monthly payment and is affordable. Such coverage allows the trucker to ensure that the truck payments are made. Truckers that fall ill or become disabled have the resources to find a replacement driver for their truck. The peace of mind that disability insurance will cover the monthly payments on their truck, ensures that their income is protected. The fundamental question is, how much do these coverages cost? This is the crucial time when value received for the premium costs are weighed against each other. Such costs can amount to an additional $100-$200 per month. Financing companies today can provide extended terms to help make the additional costs affordable. The most important question is not whether the coverages are affordable but rather can the trucker afford to be without them? Ultimately, this is another instance in our lives where the balancing act of value versus cost arises. We are often faced with these types of decisions in everyday life, but when families and their financial well-being are a part of the equation, the awareness of financial security is heightened. opening of Largest Natural Gas Fleet Fuelling Station and Operation in Canada Open to Public
T
he Emterra Group officially opened its fourth state-ofthe-art compressed natural gas (CNG) fuelling station in Canada on October 26th. This is the largest CNG fuelling station in Canada open to the public. Located at 1611 Britannia Road in Mississauga, the CNG fuelling station is a key part of Emterra’s new capability to provide recycling and waste collection services to a significant portion of the Region of Peel’s residents and businesses, with cleaner-burning, quieter-running, CNG-fuelled trucks. Together, over 100 new CNG trucks to serve Peel Region, the fast fill CNG fuelling station, along with the purchase and upgrade of a heavy truck maintenance facility certified to CNG requirements represent a $50 million investment in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). “The ‘fast-fill’ station will be open to other fleets and operators of CNG vehicles, expanding opportunities for the transportation sector in and around the GTA to ‘go greener’ using a lower cost fuel, helping to make Ontario trucking
businesses more competitive and sustainable,” said Emterra’s Founder and CEO Emmie Leung. Emterra’s partners in the venture are GAIN Clean Fuel, a division of U.S. Venture Gain Fuel Canada of Appleton, Wisconsin and C.A.T. Inc. (formerly Canadian American Transportation, Inc.) of Quebec. Ontario’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Glen Murray applauded Emterra Group for doing their part to support a low carbon economy in Mississauga, one of Canada’s busiest transportation hubs. CNG-fuelled trucks reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20% and they run as much as 90% quieter compared to diesel-fuelled engines, substantially cutting noise pollution. “The Region is dedicated to providing valuable service to the Peel community, in an environmentally-sound manner,” said Peel Region Chair Frank Dale, who also spoke at the event. LOAD SECUREMENT
L
oad securement is one of the top issues with Carriers and Drivers across the country. Let’s start with an example like below: “It is not uncommon that we see a ladder fall off a truck traveling on the highway. The driver following behind the truck has to take evasive action that result in a collision” This scenario brings to mind many important issues, including hazard avoidance, responsibility for your load, and responsibility for others on the road. An object of any sort falling off the vehicle in front of you is definitely a surprise and a distraction that calls for quick thinking and luck. A load that may shift while taking a curve can cause a roll-over, which can result in death of a driver or others, travelling beside the truck. The driver in the example above was directly responsible for this collision, as he may not have paid attention to how the load was secured, or if it was properly fastened down. During our meetings with the carriers, they often asked about load securement. We always underline the importance of the driver walk around check to ensure that the load is safe and secure. If there are any doubts, you should not drive the vehicle until you are satisfied that it is safe. Unsafe loads are a risk to all drivers on the road. You should always make sure to tell drivers to make time for the walk around check, this is a very important part of their pre-trip planning and inspection, and should not be over looked. Even MTO and DOT want carriers and

drivers to go safely about their business without interruption, but if you are stopped by enforcement officers and there are concerns about load securement, then they will take robust action. Make sure your load is safe..!! All drivers of commercial vehicles have a legal responsibility to ensure the load they are hauling is secure, for the protection of themselves and other drivers in and around their vehicle. As part of the driver daily walk round checks the load security should be a matter of their routine pre-trip inspection. Even when a driver collects a preloaded vehicle they are responsible for making sure the load is secure. And never forget to ensure that your drivers carry extra securement devices, based on different load types at all time. Ask yourself : • Can the load slide or topple forward or back? • Can the load slide or topple off the side? • Is the load unstable? • Is the load securing equipment in good condition? • Are there any loose straps or loose cargo that might fall off the load or vehicle? • Does the load security or stability present an immediate risk of injury? If the answer to any of these questions is yes or you have any doubt, then reconsider securing the load to the vehicle. These are the type of questions enforcement officers will ask themselves when assessing the load securement of your vehicle. RT

he 6th Annual Trucking for a Cure convoy took place successfully on Saturday, October 3rd at the TA Travel Centre, (Hwy 401 Exit 230) in Woodstock. The overwhelming support of sponsors, fleets, drivers, volunteers and organisers helped raise awareness and generous funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF). The day was packed with fun filled festivities including live music, BBQ and lot of prizes. D
istracted driving has been a problem for many years and certainly since the invention of the cell phone and other communication devices. In fact distracted driving has now become the largest factor in accidents today overtaking alcohol and speeding. How you use your electronic devices is up to you and certainly something that should be taken seriously by everyone and certainly put away in the vehicle. But this article isn’t about driving or electronic gadgets but distractions in general and maybe it offers the real solution to becoming distracted. As a driver I do my best to be attentive to the road and follow the rules like I think most of you do as well. I believe in safety on the road and because I know fines are also involved when using electronics in the car so I am good
at following the rules of the road. In fact I am serious enough that I don’t answer my phone if I am within the city limits even with a headset. My biggest wakeup call came from outside of the vehicle however, in a coffee shop no less! Here is what happened. I was meeting a business associate for a lunch meeting to discuss the future direction of my business. This coffee shop is a large chain with gourmet sandwiches and the like. We ordered our meal and my friend asked the girl at the counter a question about his sandwich. I was paying for both lunches so as she answered my friend she handed me the payment machine. Some joke was made during the conversation and I was half listening to the conversation and the other half of my brain was trying to remember my password to enter into the machine. As I have used these payment machines many times in the past I didn’t pay much attention to the machine although I was entering information in while listening to conversation. At this point the conversation ended and my focus returned to the task at hand. Then I noticed it, the numbers stood out like white chalk on a blackboard. The amount of $200,724.14 entered into the tip line for a $23.00 lunch. My heart raced like a stallion as my finger tried to smash the CANCEL button on the machine as many times as it could. Finally the machine spit out a piece of paper stating the transaction had been cancelled. With a sigh of relief I handed the girl behind the counter the machine apologizing that she would have to re-enter the transaction information. I then had to explain that I didn’t remove the tip because I didn’t think she was worth it. She went a long with the joke and I left her a very good tip as we all laughed about my abilities to use machines. The situation at the coffee shop showed me two things. One, it showed me how important it is to keep your mind on what you are doing especially if it is something important. Two, it showed me the importance of letting someone else pay for lunch. I hope the humour in my story helped you see the importance of not being distracted in the tasks you do each day.

Protecting our privacy in the digital age P rivacy is becoming an increasingly rare commodity. From phones to computers, to credit cards and now even our vehicles, everyday devices are collecting more information than we could ever imagine. Companies have jumped on the information-collecting bandwagon to gather as much data as possible to sell more products, services or ads that are specifically relevant to our demographics and preferences. Many of us are learning the importance of staying safe online to protect our identity. There are simple things we can do to safeguard our online privacy, like protecting passwords on smartphones, keeping social networking activity private, using firewalls on the computer, and monitoring online banking statements. However, one area that many of us haven’t even thought about is our vehicles. Some high-end new vehicles today, and almost all of them by 2020, will be loaded with a myriad of sensors feeding into an onboard computer that will record a number of issues. While this information can be useful to protect our safety, our cars will also be capable of

tracking data about where we’re going, what speed we’re travelling at, and who we’re travelling with. As car technology increasingly advances, this information represents a growing concern for drivers, privacy advocates and even car companies themselves. The questions become: who has access to our information and what are they planning to do with it? Currently many manufacturers plan to collect the information about you and your car for their own needs. The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) believes that you, the driver, should have the ability to control what information you share, and where it goes. “Vehicles are transforming into smartphones on wheels,” says Jeff Walker, vice president of public affairs at CAA. “There’s a wealth of information that cars are going to be capable of transmitting, but when it comes to sharing it, the consumer has to remain in the driver’s seat.” Before this technology becomes widespread, consumers, government and manufacturers need to work towards vehicle technology that will not only keep drivers physically safe on the roads, but that will also give drivers control over (NC) their privacy and personal information.

ntario is moving forward with its plan to help lower auto insurance rates by requiring all insurance companies in the province to provide a discount for drivers who buy and install winter tires, starting January 1, 2016. Winter tires enhance safety and reduce the likelihood of collisions by improving traction, braking and handling in frost, snow, slush and under cold and icy conditions. When buying winter tires, Ontario is also reminding drivers to: • Look for tires marked with a logo of a peaked mountain with a snowflake • Install winter tires in sets of four • Do not mix tires with different tread
patterns or size Change tires that are worn close to the tread-wear indicators • Check the tires’ air pressure at least once a month Over the last two years, the government has introduced a number of important and necessary reforms to Ontario’s auto insurance system to reduce costs and lower the premiums of Ontario’s more than 9.5 million drivers. In order to continue achieving rate reductions, the government outlined a series of further initiatives in the 2015 Budget, including bringing costs more in line with other provinces and providing Ontario consumers with more choice in purchasing auto insurance to suit their needs. Reactive Arthritis
S
imilar to other forms of arthritis, reactive arthritis causes painful and inflamed joints. What makes reactive arthritis unique is that it is triggered by an infection in another part of the body. In most cases, urinary, intestinal or genital infections are the culprit. Reactive arthritis most often occurs in people between the ages of 20 to 40 years old. Both men and women can develop this condition. Some studies have shown a genetic link with reactive arthritis however, further research is necessary to confirm this finding. There are several bacteria that can cause reactive arthritis but the most common are chlamydia, salmonella, shigella and campylobacter. This form of arthritis is not contagious however, the bacteria that causes it can be transferred from person to person through sexual contact or contaminated food. The most common joints affected by this form of arthritis are the knees, ankles and feet. The symptoms associated with reactive arthritis usually start a few weeks after the triggering infection. The most widely reported symptom is painful stiff joints of the lower leg. In some cases, patients report swollen toes and fingers. Interestingly, many people who have reactive arthritis also develop eye inflammation or conjunctivitis. Urinary problems may also occur. It is important to seek medical attention if you have new or worsening severe joint pain. At your visit, you doctor will take a detailed history and perform a physical examination. During the physical examination your doctor will examine the affected joints for
swelling and tenderness as well as range of motion. If deemed necessary, your doctor may recommend blood tests or a joint fluid analysis in which a small amount of fluid is removed from the joint with a needle. The joint fluid will then be assessed for the presence of white blood cells, bacteria and crystals. The results of this test will help determine the cause of the joint inflammation. X-rays may also be useful to rule out other forms of arthritis. The main goals of treatment are to manage symptoms and treat any underlying infections that may still be active. Antibiotics are usually prescribed to fight the infection. Anti-inflammatory medications may be used to reduce pain and inflammation in the joints. Corticosteroid injections into the affected joints can also help to reduce pain and inflammation. Physical therapy has been shown to be effective to help people with arthritis improve joint function. Stretching and strengthening
exercise are usually prescribed to help develop the surrounding musculature which in turn will increase joint stability. In addition, range of motion exercises are used to decrease joint stiffness and increase mobility. The good news is that reactive arthritis is relatively rare. However, it is always a good idea to maintain good sanitary practices to avoid the spread of bacteria. Hand washing and proper food preparation and storage are essential to prevent the transfer of food borne bacteria that can cause reactive arthritis. Keep these simple tips in mind and you will be well on your way to preventing reactive arthritis. RT Until next month, drive safely!
