Welcome to the October 2010 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the award-winning magazine for the changing trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. The “One Person, One Seatbelt” legislation requires every occupant in a motor vehicle to be buckled up properly while traveling in Ontario. However it is a matter of great concern that hundreds of motorists are still charged every month due to seatbelt related offences. We encourage all our readers to use the seatbelt as it is the single most effective way to reduce vehicle related injuries and fatalities. Collisions between vehicles and wild animals can result in serious vehicle damage, personal injury or even death. In Ontario alone, one out of every 17 motor-vehicle collisions involves wildlife, and that number is on the rise due to climate change, human encroachment and an increase in some wildlife populations. Wild animals are unpredictable at all times. However, the risk of a collision is highest from October to January. We have provided some handy tips as suggested by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation on Page 34 and hope our readers will take a note to reduce their collision risk.
Züm - Brampton’s new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service began operations on September 2010 and is now operational running along Queen Street, from downtown Brampton to York University. The $285-million Brampton Züm project is being delivered in two phases, and the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Brampton are equal funding partners. In addition to the Queen Street corridor, Phase 1 also includes construction of BRT lines on Main Street and Steeles Avenue, with scheduled completion by September 2011 and September 2012 respectively. We earnestly hope that the Züm BRT service will provide convenient and timely access to other transit networks in Toronto, Mississauga, York Region and GO Transit, and thus reduce congestion, cut commute times, help clear the air and help drive the economy in the GTA. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Good Morning Today’ our award winning weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am for latest trucking and transportation news, laws and regulations. Please keep channels of communication open and send us your valuable feedback and suggestions, as improvement is a continuous process. Drive safe and see you next month!

Volvo Trucks Touts Technologies to Improve Efficiency and Safety T
Volvo I-Shift In simple terms, the Volvo I-Shift is 12-speed, two-pedal automated transmission that integrates seamlessly with all Volvo engines. But, with the deployment of intelligent electronics, I-Shift is actually a fuel-saving, productivity boosting, driver satisfactionand safety-enhancing technology. Using microprocessors, Volvo I-Shift continuously monitors changes in grade, vehicle speed, acceleration, torque demand, weight and air resistance. With the engine and transmission in constant communication, I-Shift automatically selects the best gear for the engine. “Volvo I-Shift is far superior to any other automated manual transmission on the market,” Girard said. “With the advantage of an intelligent transmission, drivers can shift like a fuel-efficiency expert, reducing costs and putting less stress on the driveline. When combined with Volvo’s new 2010 EPA engines, customers are seeing even more significant fuel savings.” I-Shift improves safety by reducing driver fatigue. The driver can focus on the road, making turns, avoiding other traffic, and the like without worrying about being in the right gear on the right grade at the right time. “Volvo’s commitment to innovation has not wavered, even during difficult economic times,” said Brent Weary, vice president of sales and marketing for Volvo Trucks in Canada. “We continue to bring unmatched value to our fleets and drivers, which ultimately makes a difference to the public in terms of improved safety, a cleaner environment and a reduction in the use of fuel.” Volvo Trucks North America’s operations and products are guided by the company’s three core values: Safety, Quality and Environmental Care. The Volvo VN and VHD trucks are assembled in the United States at the New River Valley Plant in Dublin, Virginia, while Volvo engines for North America are assembled in Hagerstown, Maryland. Both plants are certified to ISO14001 environmental and ISO9001 quality standards.
ruck drivers and fleet managers know they need every advantage in today’s tough economic environment. Thanks to Volvo Trucks, they have access to innovative technologies to boost fuel economy, safety and driver productivity. Three Volvo systems were in the spotlight during a special customer event in Canada held September 9 – 10, 2010. The Volvo Trucks Enhanced Technology Event in Canada demonstrated Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST), Volvo Enhanced Cruise (VEC) and I-Shift – technologies that have been shown to improve efficiency and safety. The event was held at the Waterloo Regional Emergency Services Training & Research Complex in Waterloo, Ontario. “Volvo customers and guests were able to experience first-hand the impact these key technologies can have on truck performance, and their businesses as a whole” said Carol Girard, marketing manager for Volvo Trucks in Canada. Representatives from Volvo Trucks showcased the three systems and offered a roll-over simulation experience as well as a Ride-and-Drive opportunity. Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST) VEST is one of the most important advancements in truck safety. As a standard feature on all Volvo trucks since 2005, VEST assists the driver in maintaining control during emergency maneuvers and braking events, dramatically reducing the likelihood of a rollover, jackknife or loss of control. VEST sensors quickly and accurately detect a dangerous driving situation and respond by automatically reducing engine torque, applying the engine brake and activating the necessary wheel-end brakes more rapidly than a driver can respond. “By automatically compensating for miscalculations or changing road conditions, VEST helps keep the vehicle under control even on wet or snowy roads, black ice and exit ramps,” said Girard. “We believe it’s the kind of safety feature that no driver should be without.” Volvo Enhanced Cruise (VEC) With VEC, cruise control becomes a powerful safety feature. Implementing the latest in advanced collision avoidance technology, the system works with a truck’s cruise control to maintain a safe following distance between vehicles, even in adverse weather and visibility conditions. Using radar sensors, VEC monitors vehicles moving in front of and to the side of the Volvo truck. With the ability to detect up to 32 objects within 500 feet in front of the truck, VEC alerts the driver to potential danger and even automatically slows the truck to avoid a collision. TCA Opens Nominations for Third Annual Best Fleets to Drive For Contest and Survey 2011 contest to showcase North American for-hire trucking companies that provide exceptional workplace environments for their drivers
T
the companies that are already doing a good job, and push others to follow in their footsteps - continually improving the overall average and status quo. “Being listed as a Best Fleet to Drive For has a cascading effect, said Mark Murrell, president of CarriersEdge. “Companies represented in the survey get a lot of positive P.R., which results in more drivers wanting to work for them. Other carriers want the same competitive advantage, so they strive to implement similar or better features within their own companies. The end result is an improved trucking industry for everyone concerned. The survey is open to all for-hire trucking companies with 10 trucks or more, whether TCA members or not. These are evaluated against a broad range of criteria reflecting current HR best practices. Nominations must originate from one or more company drivers and/or owner-operators affiliated with the carrier. Initial information provided by the nominator will be further corroborated through interviews with the company’s management and an additional random sampling of the company’s drivers. Top finishers will be identified as Best Fleets to Drive For, and the highest scoring fleets in each of the Company Driver and Owner-Operator categories will be named that category’s overall winner.
he Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) and CarriersEdge are pleased to announce the opening of the 2011 Best Fleets to Drive For contest and survey, an annual evaluation of the best employers in the trucking industry. Now through October 31, 2010, company drivers and owner-operators may nominate their trucking companies by completing an application form on the website www.bestfleetstodrivefor.com. CarriersEdge, the provider of online driver quality improvement solutions, will be conducting the survey for TCA. As in previous years, the company expects that the survey data will reveal a wealth of carrier success stories in areas such as benefits, professional development, driver and community support, safety record, and company culture. One of TCA’s goals is to ensure that this information gets to the general public, where it can serve as a tool to combat the truck driver shortage. “Best Fleets to Drive For promotes the positives. It shows that there are a lot of good opportunities available right now in trucking, said John Kaburick, chairman of TCA and president of Earl L. Henderson Trucking Company, Salem, Illinois. Another goal of the survey is to focus attention on promoting

enworth Truck Company has introduced a new front engine power take-off (FEPTO) option for the Kenworth
T800. The Kenworth T800 FEPTO is designed and well-suited for municipal and vocational fleets that require a front engine PTO for snowplow, dump, mixer, refuse, crane and other applications. This T800 configuration also provides a front-frame extension for applications requiring front-mounted equipment, such as hydraulic rams or hose reels. T h e Kenworth T800 FEPTO utilizes a new hood designed to provide an increase in cooling module size without having to raise the cab height. The grille is mounted to the 1,440 square-inch radiator in a fixed position. This allows the hood to be tilted for daily under-hood inspections and helps prevent the grille from bumping the snowplow, pump or other front frame-mounted equipment.

TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index Records Highest August Spot Market Freight Volume TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index showed a 50 percent yearover-year increase in spot market freight volume with a two point increase from July. Freight for the month of August registered the highest volume ever recorded for the same month in the last five years. Combined cross-border loads were 55 percent higher yearover-year while equipment availability dropped 16 percent as compared to August 2009. Increasing level of freight availability along with a decline in trucks searching for loads has been the steady pattern throughout the last eight months. TransCore’s Loadlink freight matching database constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries and has been available to Canadian subscribers since its inception in 1990. Over 12 million full loads, LTL (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually. As a result of this high volume, TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight movement and provides a historical account of the domestic and cross border spot market freight movement. The Loadlink network provides Canadian based companies with: • The largest online database of available loads and trucks • Unlimited access to the network and integrated services • Guaranteed payment

he Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced that it is again delaying the implementation of the ACI eManifest program for the highway mode, this time by one month from September 31st to October 31st, 2010. ACI eManifest was initially slated to roll out in June of this year, but was pushed to September to allow CBSA to ensure the integrity of the program given the volumes of data being transmitted by highway carriers. According to CBSA the reason for the most recent delay is related to the software of other commercial programs, not ACI. According to Jason Proceviat, CBSA’s eManifest Director, “While ACI is ready to go, we bundle some commercial programs together, and there are a few delays from other areas that need to be addressed before we can go live.” Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) CEO David Bradley said “the trucking industry understands the challenges involved in implementing such a complex program, but we are frustrated by the latest delay.” He said he hopes CBSA will meet
the new implementation date. “Carriers are seeking improved efficiencies at the border,” he said. “This includes electronic transmission of data through ACI, and we are looking forward to implementation sooner rather than later. We want to avoid the stop-start pattern that characterized implementation of the ACE eManifest program in the US.” There is a keen interest from the trucking industry in getting the program rolled out. Carriers have been preparing for ACI eManifest for a number of years now. In fact, close to a hundred carriers approached CBSA just to participate in the early testing of ACI. CTA has been working closely on the development of the program and believes it will have a beneficial impact on cross-border efficiency.

anitoba Infrastructure and Transportation (MIT), together with the University of Manitoba Transport Institute (UMTI) and the Manitoba Trucking Association (MTA) present the GrEEEn (Economically and Environmentally Efficient) Trucking incentive program. Re-introduced for the Fall of 2010, the program offers incentives to companies/owner-operators to install various technological improvements. The key objectives of the GrEEEn Trucking program are to further demonstrate Provincial commitment/leadership in promoting technology and innovation as a way to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the freight transportation sector and help the private sector, through financial incentives, implement GHG emission reduction technologies. 14
Participants are required to invest a minimum of $2,000 in technologies to be eligible for rebates. These rebates range from 15 per cent up to 25 per cent (maximum $2,500 per unit) of the company’s capital investment. The GrEEEn Trucking program offers a flexible way for Manitoba’s trucking industry to combine technologies, enhance efficiency and reduce GHG emissions. Hendrickson launches 12,500 pounds rated STEERTEK front steer axle and enhanced AIRTEK integrated front air suspension and steer axle system with Daimler Trucks North America
H
AIRTEK is an integrated front air suspension that incorporates the STEERTEK fabricated front steer axle to work together to form an integrated torsion system. Hendrickson has engineered and optimized multiple components to form a system delivering unmatched ride, stability and handling characteristics with reduced weight and maintenance. New, lightweight air springs support 50% of the vertical load while providing low spring rate. The quick “snap” design and “push-to-connect” air supply design also provide fast and easy air spring installation and removal. With their innovative design, the leaf springs provide superior stability, performance and a soft ride as they share the load equally with the air springs. Durable rubber front and rear bushings require no lubrication, contributing to reduced maintenance requirements. Optimized design of the front and rear frame brackets delivers weight reduction and further durability. This lightweight system provides premium driver comfort and is ideal for on-highway, line and regional haul operations. To further enhance Hendrickson’s focus on providing value to their customers, STEERTEK comes with a standard 10-year, 1 million mile limited warranty. The warranty coverage includes the axle beam, steering arm, knuckle assemblies and kingpins when used in Hendrickson-approved applications in the United States and Canada and within the proper guidelines of STEERTEK.
endrickson Truck Suspension Systems officials announce the innovative, weight saving STEERTEK front steer axle is now available at a 12,500 lbs. capacity rating on select Freightliner and Western Star truck models. STEERTEK’s unique fabricated design saves up to 30 pounds compared to traditional I-beam axles. AIRTEK integrated front air suspension and steer axle system has been enhanced and is now available at a 12,500 lbs. capacity rating on Freightliner Cascadia and Coronado models as well as the Western Star 4900 truck model. Enhancements include new lightweight air springs, innovative leaf springs, and optimized design of the front and rear frame brackets. AIRTEK saves up to 40 pounds compared to traditional steel springs with I-beam axles. The unique manufacturing process of the STEERTEK axle allows for greater design flexibility to meet the varied industry applications and also contributes to STEERTEK’s significant weight savings compared to traditional forged axles. STEERTEK’s rigid, box-shaped design resists twisting forces more effectively than traditional I-beams, while the patented two-piece knuckle assembly simplifies kingpin bushing serviceability. In addition, integrated steering arm and tie rod attachments increase strength and further reduce weight, providing greater durability and helping to reduce maintenance costs. STEERTEK is also available with mechanical leaf spring suspensions up to 12,500 lbs.

NEW BLACKBERRY APP CONNECTS TRUCKERS WITH MICHELIN TRUCK TIRES M
ichelin Americas Truck Tires (MATT) is rolling out a mobile dealer–locator application for Blackberry smart phones used in the U.S. and Canada. As the first truly mobile tire– related application in the trucking industry, the new MICHELIN Blackberry application joins the existing MICHELIN ONCall emergency road service (ERS) and online dealer and service locator in Michelin’s “Wherever You Go” offering. “Based on research into the most popular mobile platforms in the trucking industry, we launched the Blackberry application first,” said Jaye Young, U.S. country marketing manager, MATT. “But the Android and iPhone applications are not far behind. It’s no secret that today’s business runs in real–time, and our customers expect information literally at their fingertips—including information about where they can find Michelin tires.” The Blackberry application provides the location of the nearest Michelin truck tire or service provider, as well as basic information about that location, all from the hand–held Blackberry device. Users can call MICHELIN ONCall ERS directly from the app or search for a provider by category, including emergency road service, travel plazas, onsite tire service or MRT retread providers. The application can provide service providers based on the user’s current GPS location or an entered location. It also gives users the ability to call the service provider or save the provider’s information
to their device’s contacts or address book. In addition to being able to call for emergency road service directly from the application, Michelin has recently enhanced MICHELIN ONCall ERS at 1–800–TIRE–911. “We now have direct contact with service technicians in order to ensure timely service of customers who need us, many times in the middle of the night,” said Clive Guest, emergency roadside service manager, MATT. “We’ve also implemented very clear service metrics, so our partners are accountable for their performance. The initial response has been very positive, with call volumes increasing significantly in a very short time.” For more information on the Blackberry app or MICHELIN ONCall, please visit www.michelintruck.com.

407 ETR opens new lanes 4
Investment in construction and infrastructure now tops $1.2 billion
07 ETR recently opened more than 18 kilometres of new lanes that will keep customers moving along all-electronic, barrier-free toll highway. The new lanes run both east and west between Highway 404 and Markham Road. While one lane in each direction was officially opened, 407 ETR built a total of two lanes in each direction to accommodate future growth. The investment made this year to construct both lanes at the same time means the other lane in each direction can be opened in the future without the need for major new construction or inconvenience to customers. As with 407 ETR highway construction projects, this project has undergone in-depth inspection and audit and complies with allOntario Ministry of Transportation standards. The new lanes bring the total number of individual lane kilometres on the highway to more than 1,100 kilometres. 407 ETR spans 108 kilometres across the GTA - from Burlington in the west to Pickering in the east. The new lane capacity along this important corridor of the highway is one of many infrastructure projects over the past several years that have served customers well and kept traffic moving. Investment in construction and infrastructure since 1999 now tops $1.2 billion. In addition to keeping traffic moving, construction and other improvements provide the communities and businesses the highway serves with additional capacity to support growth and development. 407 ETR construction projects also create thousands of local jobs which has been especially important during the recent period of economic recession. 407 ETR makes use of leading edge technology in the operation of 198 unique non-stop entry and exit points along Job Seekers: Sign up this month for a chance to the highway which allow customers to win a Sirius Sportster 5 Radio with Universal Boombox. continually move on and off the highway Today’s Trucking and highwaySTAR magazines, and without the need to stop at a toll booth. Kenworth Offers Special T700 Website Section
K
enworth Truck Company offers a special website section (www. kenworth.com) for the new Kenworth T700, the latest evolution of Kenworth’s aerodynamic product line. The Kenworth T700 targets over the road and team driver operations with its excellent driver comfort features. The T700’s spacious, wide cab has nearly 30 inches between the driver and passenger seats for convenient access to the 75-inch AERODYNE sleeper and its soaring 8-foot cathedral ceiling. The roomy interior provides an industryleading 60-plus cubic feet of storage space, and nearly 25 percent more interior volume compared to a similarly specified Kenworth T660. The ergonomic cab has modern dash styling, state-of-art multiplexed instrumentation, and the Kenworth Driver Information Center. The new Kenworth NavPlus, the trucking industry’s first PC-based, in-dash system, includes true truck-specific navigation, vehicle data, hands-free phoning, audio controls, camera inputs, roadside assistance, and optional Internet access. Kenworth NavPlus will be standard on T700 premium trim offerings and optional for all other trim levels. The T700 also has best in class forward lighting, excellent serviceability features, and modern aerodynamic styling. The Kenworth T700 has the lowest aerodynamic drag of any Kenworth truck in company history and earned Environmental Protection Agency SmartWaySM program certification. The site includes an informative 4-minute video that shows the T700 in action on the highway and highlights key features. The downloadable 6-page T700 brochure, which also is available from Kenworth dealers in the United States and Canada, provides information on fuel efficiency and savings, driver comfort, interior color schemes, and standard and optional features for the cab and sleeper interior. A full page is devoted to the 2010 PACCAR MX engine, which is available with a horsepower range of 380 hp to 485 hp and torque outputs up to 1,750 lb-ft. This power range, combined with excellent fuel efficiency, high reliability, durability, lightweight design and low cost of ownership, makes the PACCAR MX engine an ideal choice for both over-the-road line-haul and vocational applications. The T700 site also includes a downloadable brochure on the disc-brake compatible Kenworth AG130 front air suspension for the Kenworth T660, T700 and T800. The AG130’s four air-bag configuration handles the majority of the vertical load while a lower leaf spring handles the remainder to help the suspension resist high input torque encountered with disc brakes. The design reduces vibration into the cab and onto the chassis to help provide a smooth ride.
Kenworth T700 and PACCAR MX Engine Making Good Impressions on Canadian Fleets, Owner Operators O
ff the heels of a successful tour in the United States, Kenworth’s T700 and PACCAR MX Engine Tour continues to draw hundreds of truck operators in Canada as the tour winds its way from British Columbia to New Brunswick, with stops in between. In Greater Toronto Area, the tour stopped at Kenworth Truck Centres in Kitchener and Concord on September 23rd and 24th respectively. The Open Houses at both the locations were well attended and there was a good feeling in the air about both T700 and the PACCAR MX engine. The interior space, stylish look and aerodynamic features on the new T700 impressed a lot of customers. The Kenworth T700 and PACCAR MX Engine Tour offers fleets and drivers a close-up look at the new, aerodynamic Kenworth T700 and the fuel-efficient 2010 PACCAR MX engine during stops at more than 80 Kenworth dealerships. The tour also showcases the new Kenworth NavPlus navigation and business technology system for Class 5–8 trucks, Kenworth AG130 front air suspension, and Eaton UltraShift Plus automated transmission. The PACCAR MX engine has accumulated more than 50 million test miles in rigorous and severe conditions in North America. It is available with a horsepower range of 380-hp to 485-hp and torque output up to 1,750 lb-ft. The PACCAR MX engine leads the industry with a B10 rating compared to the B50 rating of other competitive engines. A B10 engine life rating means that 90 percent of PACCAR MX engines are expected to reach 1 million miles compared to just 50 percent of those with a B50 / 1 million-mile rating.

PETERBILT’S DENTON FACTORY CELEBRATES 30 YEARS P
eterbilt Motors Company recently celebrated the 30-year anniversary of its Denton, Texas manufacturing facility. The Denton plant first opened its doors in August of 1980, with 82 employees producing only one model, the Model 359. Today, the company’s broad range of on-highway and vocational models are manufactured in Denton and are recognized throughout the industry as the highest quality vehicles on the road. “Peterbilt takes great pride in achieving 30 years of manufacturing excellence at our Denton facility,” said Bill Jackson, Vice President of PACCAR and General Manager of Peterbilt. “This significant milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of our employees, the support of our dealer network and our loyal customers who recognize the quality, performance and value of every truck that bears the Peterbilt logo.” In 1980, the plant produced only 15 Model 359’s each month. Today, the facility far exceeds its original production capacity, producing eight models for the on-highway and vocational markets. “As our products have evolved, so has our manufacturing processes,” said Mike Dozier, Peterbilt’s Assistant General Manager of Operations. “Investments in advanced technologies such as robotic paint and welding systems, combined with our engineering team’s continuous product design improvements, have allowed Peterbilt to continually advance the industry leading quality of our products, while also achieving environmental leadership in the automotive
industry.” Peterbilt encourages its dealers and customers to visit the world class facility to witness trucks being built from start to finish. The craftsmanship and technology throughout the Denton factory have a tremendous impact on Peterbilt’s customers who participate in tours. “The plant plays a significant importance in attracting new customers and retaining existing ones,” said Arlen Savitt, Peterbilt’s Assistant General Manager of Sales & Marketing. “Tours of our world-class facility have directly resulted in truck sales as customers have the opportunity to observe first-hand the superior quality, pride and dedication built into every vehicle we produce.” Peterbilt’s loyal workforce has also played a strong role in the facility’s ability to keep pace with an ever-changing marketplace, where customers require customized vehicles to meet their operational requirements. Of the first 82 employees who began at the Denton facility, ten people still remain at Peterbilt. “I have witnessed amazing changes over the past 30 years,” said Susan Bishop, one of Denton’s first employees. “But what has remained consistent through the decades is the great pride and passion I, and all of my fellow co-workers, bring to the job every day. We are dedicated to delivering our customers the very best truck possible and I feel honored to represent one of the best brands in the world.”

Mack MVASIST and OneCall Complete Care Integrated Innovative service management system, streamlining maintenance and reducing downtime, now even more effective
C
work. The combination of MVASIST and OneCall gives fleets a turnkey system for breakdown support and service management and maintenance. Mack customers, already familiar with OneCall, will appreciate the added benefit of more effective and efficient communication when they need it most. A OneCall technician will arrange for towing or repair at a nearby Mack service center. Using MVASIST, the service center will then be able to communicate directly and accurately with fleet decision-makers. Mack dealers and service providers use MVASIST to assemble consistent, complete, professional estimates of service recommendations, including standard repair times, regardless of which dealer in the Mack network performs the service. The system also delivers fleet and vehicle-specific information, including warranty coverage and previously negotiated parts pricing. The fleet manager has the ability to authorize or deny service steps, share information and options, and receive status alerts during the entire service event. MVASIST also allows the option of being proactive in planning and scheduling routine inspections and service. A service advisor can recommend appropriate maintenance, and fleet managers can, at a glance, see the vehicle’s history and decide on additional service. A majority of dealers in the Mack network are currently enrolled in the MVASIST system, with full participation planned for the end of 2010.
oordinating fleet repairs and maintenance just got even easier, thanks to a new capability integrated into MVASIST from Mack Trucks, Inc. MVASIST is a web-based system that lets fleet managers, service providers and now the MACK OneCall Complete Care customer support network work together – in real time – to expedite repairs and maximize uptime. Developed through a partnership between Decisiv, Inc. and Mack, MVASIST gives fleet customers the technology to improve communications, manage costs, reduce downtime and maximize performance for every truck. At the same time, the Mack service network is able to dramatically improve service processes and boost customer satisfaction. The original MVASIST platform increased the efficiency of the service process by pulling together historically separate silos of information and placing them within a single web portal. Now, Mack and Decisiv have integrated MVASIST with the Mack OneCall support network.Mack OneCall provides customers with fast, reliable, 24/7 access to trained technicians capable of diagnosing and troubleshooting repair, routine service or warranty

CTHRC and CTA Team Up to Produce TV Profile of Trucking Industry Uses cable TV, Internet to showcase career opportunities for younger demographic
T
he Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) and the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) and the provincial trucking associations have teamed up to produce a profile of the trucking industry that will air on an upcoming episode of The Profile Series, an award winning informational TV series hosted by Lou Gossett Jr., and distributed in the USA to CNN, Bravo and via the Internet. The CTHRC-CTA production will air in Canada on a yet-to-be finalized national network. The broadcast version of the profile will also be posted to popular social networking sites such as You Tube, Google Video, etc. However, viewers can get a sneak peak of a customized version of the profile by visiting the CTA website at http://www.cantruck.ca/media/clip/ cta.html. Linda Gauthier, executive director of the CTHRC says “the purpose of the production is to showcase the Canadian trucking industry and its many career opportunities.” One of the key reasons for partnering with The Profile Series is that the company seeks out stations and internet venues that appeal to a younger demographic. “We’re attempting to promote the industry to a younger demographic,” says David Bradley, CTA’s president and CEO. “We need to attract more young people to the industry so it’s logical that we would use media that they are more likely to tune into.” The stars of the show are the people of the Canadian trucking industry who appear in the profile and do a great job of promoting
the various jobs and career opportunities on offer. They include drivers, mechanics, driver trainers, administrators and company owners. They are all from companies that provided much-needed sponsorship for the project: Bison Transportation of Manitoba, Rosenau Transport of Alberta, Robert Transport of Quebec and Cavalier Transportation, Challenger Motor Freight, Jeff Bryan Transport, Manitoulin Transport and Rosedale Transport of Ontario. Financial support was also provided by the Alberta Trucking Association, the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, the British Columbia Trucking Association, the Manitoba Trucking Association, the Ontario Trucking Association and the Saskatchewan Trucking Association.

B
y the time this article is published we will have passed the month that holds “National Trucking Week” and be moving onto other concerns. Did you celebrate “National Trucking Week”? Did you see signs, flags, and celebrations? How many companies and institutions celebrate at this time and I wonder if it gets down to street level, to the people who need to see that praise and know that they make a difference. Why is it only a week, why not a month, two months, or a year? I think over time the celebrations seem to lose their vibe, their oomph! Years ago it was all over the place; everywhere you went. Even if it is still around within the industry why is it not promoted to the public? Why are there not television ads, radio ads promoting the transportation industry? Have some so the public understands the trucks and drivers they encounter on the road are working for them. Maybe we should be taking notes from the “Ladies of the Highway” on how to promote our industry. The lady drivers for years have been struggling to have their voices heard and fit in within an industry dominated traditionally by men. When I began in this industry there were very few and when you spotted a woman driver, it was like spotting the Northern Lights – very rare. Today women drivers are
much more common and very much a part of the industry. As times change more women are finding the industry as a viable way of making a living. What I find interesting is that the women who have good reason to celebrate their accomplishments have chosen to make their voices heard. They are celebrating their fellow lady drivers and are excited about their future. This holds true in many of the classes I teach. I have found the women coming into the industry have a passion and want to learn what it takes to be the best in this industry. When speaking with the men, many are content to just get a position and join the “status quo”. So how are the ladies celebrating their part in the industry? From a training standpoint many training facilities are focusing on courses in the transportation industry just for women. Places like Microskills offers both driving and customer service courses. In seminars I see more women filling the seats, asking questions, taking notes, and showing great interest in not just the driving, but future as an owner operator in this industry. Many companies are making it easier for lady drivers to access the system. “Women in Trucking” has also been a major player in getting the ladies voices heard. Probably the largest celebration though is through the ladies who have created “Convoy for a Cure”. For
the last few years the convoys have grown in numbers and areas starting in Eastern Ontario and now growing throughout Ontario, the Atlantic Provinces, Western Canada and the United States. This is no small feat as the coordination, purpose, and people they are helping cannot be understated. By creating this band of convoys across North America they are doing two things. One is they are celebrating the women in trucking by allowing anyone with a license above a basic car licence to roll with the convoys and the second benefit is they are raising awareness and funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Now as I was saying earlier our celebrations should last longer than a week and October is “Breast Cancer Month”, so their voices will be heard all month long. All of the convoys are being held within this month. This keeps the awareness level high and creates more of a celebration. If you would like to join the fight against breast cancer and help celebrate the “Ladies of the Highway”, then talk to many of the lady drivers, or visit the Convoy for a Cure websites. The one for South Western Ontario is www. convoyforacureonwest.com and there you can find information on all of the convoys. Maybe we men should take a lesson from the ladies. Good luck ladies and congratulations on a job well done.

New PeopleNet/TMW Integration First to Automate Inspection-Ticket
Peel Police - Safe Driving Campaign Ends with 1,531 Charges being Laid

DRIVE SAFE
eel Regional Police have laid 1,531 charges during the recent Safe Driving Campaign, which focused on road safety and ensuring compliance with recently introduced legislation on our roadways. The campaign ran from Monday, August 23, 2010, to Monday, September 12, 2010. The “End of Summer Safe Driving Campaign” targeted drivers that were not complying with the rules of the road. This campaign was a zero tolerance approach to road safety.
The following charges were laid:
-Eight drivers, 21 years of age or under, were charged with having alcohol in their system -577 people were been charged with seatbelt offences -946 drivers were charged with failing to comply with the new handheld devices legislation Peel Regional Police would like to remind drivers that officers will continue to enforce all traffic laws, including the most recent legislation. We urge motorists to drive safely and responsibly, particularly when traveling through residential areas and school zones.
P
eopleNet, the provider of integrated onboard computing and mobile communications systems for effective fleet management, has announced an industry-first integration with TMT Fleet Maintenance software that will reduce operational costs by automating the inspection-ticket workflow. The announcement was made at TMW’s user conference, TransForum, held in Dallas. According to PeopleNet Vice President of Tailored Solutions Randy Boyles, “Over the past 10 years, TMW and PeopleNet integrations have demonstrated that tightly integrated fleet processes enable workflow automation.” The two companies have begun working on eDVIR (electronic driver vehicle inspection report) to automate the creation of inspection tickets. In this centralized closed-loop application, TMT Fleet Maintenance polls PeopleNet’s message history and creates a work order when it detects a vehicle defect identified by a driver in an eDVIR form message. The system automatically red-tags safety-related issues for highest priority maintenance. When the vehicle repair is completed, the system sends a message through PeopleNet Fleet Manager to dispatch and the vehicle’s scheduled driver, identifying the mechanic and the corrective action that was completed. The complete eDVIR report along with eDVIRs that do not require maintenance are stored in TMT Fleet Maintenance.

W
hat are the benefits of using an Industry specific job board for recruiting? Recruiting in general can be a time consuming task, however, recruiting for qualified professionals such as Drivers and Owner Operators can be even more daunting. Deciding where to advertise your job posting can be the important decision you make in the entire recruiting process. “Fish where the fish are” is an old saying that is very appropriate in the recruiting context. Scouring through loads of paper resumes to qualify and pre-screen candidates can weigh down the most determined recruiter. Short listing your screened candidates and scheduling their interviews is the next phase that takes considerable time and energy. Depending on your employee retention rate this recruiting process can become a routine that takes up most of your work time, leaving you with precious little time to focus on employee retention programs. This leaking cup syndrome (constantly losing employees due to various reasons) can become a very costly affair and can adversely affect employee morale, corporate productivity,
company revenue and profits. Registering with a job board gives you access to resumes as well as allows you to advertise your currently available jobs. This will give you the flexibility to shortlist potential candidates for future interviews as and when the hiring opportunity becomes available. Furthermore it will also shorten your recruitment process to days rather than weeks. Ways to boost the return on your recruiting dollars • Take to the internet to cast your recruitment net and you will find a pool of active job search candidates much faster and spend less money than the traditional way of recruiting . • Register with an established job board that is specific to trucking and logistics. • It is also better to register with a job board that has nationwide coverage, this will ensure that potential candidates that are looking to re-locate can apply to your jobs . • Budget your search by seeking promotional offers, package deals (by month or by number of jobs) or unlimited access to resume search and job posting. • Create a company profile on these job boards and encourage
candidates to consider your company when hiring opportunities become available. • Describe why your company is an attractive place to work and what they can expect – Be authentic in your description. • Take advantage of automated alerts that notify you of newly registered candidates that suit your requirements. • As companies regularly register new job openings on job boards, your advertised jobs will consequently drop down the list – so make sure you regularly update your posted jobs in order that they stay at the top of the list. • Refresh your job postings by adding new and updated information on a regular basis so candidates know that your posting is actively monitored and managed by a hiring professional. The best advice I have heard from a recruiting professional is to “plan and prepare for any situtation”. That means using recruiting tools such as job boards well in advance of when you actually need them. So when a department manager comes to you with a hiring requisition, you can get back to her or him within hours with a shortlist of potential candidates.

Watch WildLife for
Reduce Your Collision Risk
Collisions with wild animals can result in serious vehicle damage, personal injury or even death. • On average, there is a motor vehicle/wild animal collision every 38 minutes • One out of every 17 motor vehicle collisions involves a wild animal • Motor vehicle/wild animal collisions are increasing annually. In 2007, 13,954 collisions were reported. Many more go unreported. • 89 per cent occur on two-lane roads outside of urban areas • 86 per cent occur in good weather Wild animals are unpredictable at all times. However, there are two peak times when the risk of a collision is highest: May and June and from October to January.
Watch • Scan the road ahead from shoulder to shoulder. When you see wildlife beside the road, slow down and pass carefully as they may suddenly bolt onto the road. • Watch for the yellow wildlife warning signs that indicate an area of increased risk. Slow down when travelling through these areas. • Use high beams at night where possible and watch for glowing eyes of animals Steer • Stay in control. Watch your speed and take extra precautions when driving at night as visibility is greatly reduced. Slowing down will give you that extra second to respond. • Never swerve suddenly. This could cause your vehicle to go out of control or head into oncoming traffic. Brake • Brake firmly if an animal is standing on, or crossing, the road. Never assume the animal will move out of your way.
The Province of Ontario has taken a number of steps to help keep animals from wandering onto the road, including: • Installing fencing along major highways • Removing roadside brush to improve sightlines and visibility for drivers • Draining salty ponds beside highways, which may attract wild life • Posting warning signs where there is a history of wildlife colli sions • Installing highway lighting to improve visibility at night
Stop • Stop as safely as possible if a wild animal is crossing the road. Remember, if one animal crosses the road, others may follow. If possible, avoid driving during dusk or dawn when most wildlife collisions occur. Swerving to avoid hitting a wild animal may result in a more serious collision. If hitting a wild animal is unavoidable, remember to stay in control.

Canada, “My wife is a software expert but I’m into the media line which is not so well-paying abroad. So I’ve signed up for Yoga classes and for the next three months I’ll perfect my asanas, so that I can make some money when we finally move.

On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

End of her political career? When the controversy
erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.
Personal relationships not working out:
I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to. The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft. Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

GOVERNMENT PARTNERSHI ZÜM BUS RAPID TRANSIT
avid Tilson, Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon; the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Ont ario’s Minister of Transportation; and Her Worship Susan Fennell, mayor of Brampton participated in a launch event for Züm, Brampton’s first bus rapid transit (BRT) service, and the official opening of the new Brampton Transit Bramalea Terminal. Züm service runs along Queen Street, from downtown Brampton to York University, and began operations on September 20, 2010. “Investments in regional transit links will connect cities, create jobs, boost the Canadian economy and improve the environment,” said MP Tilson. “This rapid transit system will provide commuters in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area with a more efficient transit option, while cutting commute times and taking more cars off the road.” “Supporting public transit projects across Ontario makes good economic and environmental sense,” said Minister Wynne. “New Züm BRT service will provide convenient and timely access to other transit networks in Toronto, Mississauga, York Region and GO Transit, and reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. Transit investments like this are part of the McGuinty government’s Open Ontario plan to strengthen our economy and create more jobs and opportunities across the province.” “The launch of Züm marks an incredibly important milestone for both Brampton Transit and the City of Brampton,” said Mayor Fennell. “City council made it a priority to work quickly and efficiently with senior levels in government to deliver a modern, reliable and environmentally friendly bus rapid transit system to the people of Brampton, on time and on budget. With the launch of Züm service on September 20, Bramptonians will benefit from a sleek, state-of-the-art, world-class rapid transit system that will connect them with major events and activities in and around Brampton, and across the GTA.” The $285-million Brampton Züm project is being delivered in two phases, and the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Brampton are equal funding partners. In addition to the Queen Street corridor, Phase 1 also includes construction of BRT lines on Main Street and Steeles Avenue, with scheduled completion by September 2011 and September 2012 respectively. Work is ongoing and future events will be held to mark important construction milestones. Phase 2 of the project will expand services along Queen Street and Steeles Avenue, as well as introducing service on Bovaird Drive. Completion of the second phase is expected by 2021. The Government of Canada is contributing up to $95 million through the FLOW initiative. The Province of Ontario has already provided its contribution of $95 million, and the City of Brampton will fund the remaining $95 million in total project costs.
INFORMATION ON FLOW AND OTHER TRANSIT PROJECTS IN THE GREATER TORONTO AREA FLOW FLOW, the Government of Canada’s transportation action plan for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), is designed to reduce congestion, cut commute times, help clear the air and help drive the economy in the GTA. It consists of key transportation infrastructure projects that are being funded and built in the short to medium term. In most cases, the projects are being cost-shared by the three levels of government — federal, provincial and municipal. The projects were selected following consultations with the Province of Ontario, mayors in the GTA, regional chairs, municipal councillors and various community groups. This plan was developed to help enhance the quality of life for residents and help businesses increase efficiency by keeping people, ROAD TODAY OCTOBER 2010

The Government of Canada has committed up to $95 million, while the Province of Ontario has already provided $95 million. The City of Brampton will fund the remaining $95 million in total project costs. The project will be constructed in two phases. The first phase is expected to be complete by 2012 with three BRT lines (Queen Street in 2010, Main Street in 2011 and Steeles Avenue in 2012). The second phase will be complete by 2021. Other GTA Transit Projects Mississauga Transitway This project involves the construction of an east-west dedicated bus right of way across the City of Mississauga between Winston Churchill Boulevard and Renforth Drive. This project will improve local and inter-regional bus operations across the City of Mississauga. A total of 11 stations will be constructed along the route. The Government of Canada has committed up to $83 million to the project. The Province of Ontario has provided the City of Mississauga with $65 million through MoveOntario to support the project and has committed to providing an additional $48 million in Metrolinx investments. The project is expected to be complete by 2012. Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension The existing Spadina subway line will be extended by 8.6 kilometres through York University to the Vaughan Corporate Centre. The Government of Canada is committing up to $697 million towards the eligible project costs. The Province of Ontario provided $870 million through MoveOntario for this project. The City of Toronto and Regional Municipality of York previously committed their contributions and are responsible for the remainder of the project costs. The total cost of the subway extension is estimated at $2.6 billion; it is expected to be complete by 2015. York Region Viva Phase 2 (vivaNext) The Viva rapid transit system will be enhanced through the construction of dedicated BRT lane systems along the Yonge
Street and Highway 7 corridors. The Government of Canada has committed up to $85 million towards eligible project costs. VivaNext is a priority in Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The Province of Ontario has committed up to $1.4 billion to vivaNext through MoveOntario. FLOW also includes three highway projects. Who’s the boss? The boss was concerned that his employees weren’t giving him enough respect, so he tried an old-fashioned method of persuasion: He brought in a sign that said “I’m the Boss” and taped it to his door. After lunch, he noticed someone had taped another note under his. “Your wife called. She wants her sign back.” Work in winter One winter morning, an employee explained why he had shown up for work 50 minutes late. “It was so slippery that for every step I took ahead, I slipped back two.” The boss eyed him suspiciously. “Oh, yeah? Then how did you ever get here?” “I finally gave up,” he said, “and started for home.” No complaint The eight-year old boy had never spoken a word. One afternoon, as he sat eating his lunch, he turned to his mother and said, “Soup’s cold.” His astonished mother exclaimed, “Son, I’ve waited so long to hear you speak. But all these years you never said a thing. Why haven’t you spoken before?” The boy looked at her and replied, “Up until now, everything’s been okay.”

Hernias
his month I have decided to write about hernias. Do you have an unexplained bulge in your abdomen area or near your groin? Does it hurt to cough or lift heavy things? Do you have chronic acid reflux (heart burn)? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a hernia. Hernias are a fairly common condition among truck drivers who are required to perform lifting tasks as part of their job. In this article I am going to discuss what a hernia is, the different types as well as some treatment options. Let’s get started. A hernia is a protrusion of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening in the body. Most hernias occur, when a portion of the intestines slips through a weak point in the abdominal wall. For the majority of hernias, when this occurs, there is a visible bulge that is seen in the abdomen. Typical areas for hernias are in the groin area and just below the ribs. The hiatus, inguinal and abdominal hernias are the three most common types of hernias. Of the three, the hiatus hernia is a little bit different then the other two. A hiatus is a hole in an organ which allows another organ to pass through it. When a hiatus hernia occurs, part of the intestines bulges through the diaphragm muscle. The diaphragm has a hiatus in it, to allow the esophagus to pass through. The hiatus in the diaphragm is usually tight and snug around the esophagus. Sometimes, the diaphragm becomes weak and the hiatus enlarges and allows the intestines to pass through it, the end result is a hiatus hernia. Since the diaphragm is a thin sheet like muscle that separates your lungs from your abdomen, when a hiatus hernia occurs, it cannot be seen. This makes diagnosing it a little more difficult. A diagnosis is usually made through an upper gastrointestinal barium x ray. In most patients a hiatus hernia does not cause any symptoms. Some
patients however may experience chronic acid reflux or heart burn. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acids enters the lower part of the esophagus. The burning sensation that is experienced is due to the acids irritating the esophagus. Chronic “heart burn” can result in bleeding, anemia and or low red blood cell count. Due to the chronic irritation of this area, scarring may occur which results in narrowing of the esophagus. This in turn makes swallowing difficult and food does not pass easily into the stomach. Treatment for a hiatus hernia
is only required when you are experiencing any of the above symptoms. Treatment involves limiting the food that increases stomach acid secretion (i.e. nicotine, caffeine, fatty foods, alcohol, peppermint and chocolate). Try to eat smaller, more frequent meals, make sure you do not eat 2-3 hours before bedtime. Avoid bending, stooping, abdominal exercises, tight belts and anything that can possible increase pressure of the abdominal cavity. In general, increase abdominal pressure stresses the abdominal musculature. If it is weak, there is an increase chance for a hernia to occur. If you are overweight, try and lose some weight because the excess weight will also increase the pressure in the abdomen. Finally, try and elevate your head about 8 to 10 inches by using a pillow under your mattress. Gravity will help keep the stomach acid from entering the esophagus. Surgery is not usually done unless it is a medical emergency. Most hiatus hernias are treated with lifestyle modifications and medications. The abdominal and inguinal hernias are the two types of hernias that 43
most people are aware of. These two hernias occur when there is a weakness in the abdomen wall, resulting in the intestines pushing through. When this occurs there is a visible bulge in your abdominal or groin area. A good analogy is using a bicycle tire. Think of a hernia as a bulge in the tire. The outer wall is your abdominal wall, and the inner tube represents your intestines. When there is a weak spot in the tire, the inner tube pushed through a bulge is seen. Unfortunately, it is hard to predict who will have a hernia. A hernia can be present at birth or may develop over time. If you are constantly straining or increasing the pressure of the abdominal wall (i.e. coughing, lifting heavy objects) along with being obese, your risk of having a hernia is higher. This is why drivers that are required to unload their trucks manually or “hand bomb” their loads are at more risk of developing a hernia. With an abdominal hernia it is important to get it examined by your doctor. If the abdominal hernia is a reducible type hernia (can be pushed back in) there is no serious health related issues. If it is non reducible, it is a medical emergency. With this type of abdominal hernia, blood flow can be decreased to the intestines leading to cellular death. Strangulation of the intestines may occur, making it difficult for digestion and causing extreme pain. Surgery is the usual treatment for these two types of hernias, depending on severity. For more information contact the Shouldice Clinic in Thornhill, an internationally respected centre of excellence for hernia repair. Until next month take care and drive safely!!
