Inside this edition, you will find the latest developments and event updates plus all the regular columns and features Ontario plans to crack down on careless and distracted driving with tough new rules and penalties that would help improve road safety and keep the most vulnerable road users – including pedestrians and cyclists – safe. We applaud the proposed measures, some of which include: • A new offence for careless driving causing death or bodily harm with penalties that include fines, licence suspension and imprisonment • Tougher penalties for distracted driving, such as using a cellphone while operating a vehicle, including higher fines, more demerit points, and license suspensions • Increased penalties for drivers who fail to yield for pedestrians and escalating fines for drivers who are convicted of multiple pedestrianrelated offences within a five-year window With the seasonal color changes beginning across the province, many drivers will be out enjoying the scenery and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding all drivers to focus on the road. Over the last three years, the OPP has investigated over 10,000 collisions annually involving wildlife. Its collision data shows that during the fall season motorists driving in rural areas need to be extra cautious as wildlife become more active. The OPP is reminding motorists to take the following precautions in order to reduce their risk of becoming involved in a collision with wildlife: • Scan the road ahead from shoulder-to-shoulder. Moose, elk and deer are particularly active searching for food, especially at dawn and dusk. • Watch your speed and be careful when driving at night. Slowing down will give you more time to react. • Brake firmly if an animal is standing on or crossing the road, and stop if necessary and safe to do so. Swerving to avoid hitting a wild animal may result in a loss of control and a more serious collision. • Do not direct your full attention to the animal when you take measures to avoid hitting it. Instead, focus your attention on the alternative route you decide to take, again only if this maneuver doesn’t place you and others in danger. To help keep roads safe, Ontario plans to introduce new measures to make drugimpaired driving laws even tougher. On September 18th, Premier Kathleen Wynne and Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation, announced in Toronto that Ontario plans to introduce legislation this fall that would increase the consequences and costs for those who drive under the influence of drugs, including cannabis. The measures add to Ontario’s comprehensive cannabis plan, introduced in advance of the federal government’s plans to legalize recreational cannabis by July 2018. In Ontario, the penalties for impaired driving are already among the toughest in Canada. The province has been working closely with public health and safety experts, police, and federal and municipal governments to develop the proposed measures, which build on Ontario’s recent action to align penalties for drugimpaired driving with those already in place for drunk drivers. New, tougher laws against drug-impaired driving will include zero tolerance for:
• Young drivers aged 21 and under • Novice drivers — G1, G2, M1 and M2 licence holders • All commercial drivers. Zero tolerance means that drivers should not get behind the wheel if they have any detectable presence of drugs or alcohol in their system. For cannabis, the federal government will be approving a screening device and setting the thresholds for detectable presence in the coming months. Ontario’s legislation would also increase monetary penalties for all drivers who fail, or refuse to perform, a sobriety test. As the federal legalization of cannabis approaches, Ontario plans to convene a summit in the fall of 2017 with policing partners, public health and other stakeholders. With the goal of keeping communities safe, the summit will be an opportunity to identify the resources necessary to address illegal storefront cannabis sales, proposed provincial offences, enforcement, opportunities for coordination and collaboration, and associated resource requirements. 30 kg of suspected cocaine found in a truck at the Ambassador Bridge
T
he Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have announced the seizure of 30.6 kilograms of suspected cocaine at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor. On September 22, 2017, two returning residents, a driver and co-driver, were sent for a secondary examination. During the inspection, suspected cocaine was found within the load. Both subjects were placed under arrest and transferred to RCMP custody. The RCMP has charged Preet Kiran Singh Gill and Suresh Nath Sharma, both from Ontario, with the following offences: importation of cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine. A total of 30.6 kg of suspected cocaine consisting of 25 bricks was seized. The investigation continues. “Border services officers are committed to keeping our communities safe. This seizure demonstrates the
hard work and perseverance of our law enforcement officers working together to protect our border,” said Tamara Allard, District Director, Ambassador Bridge Operations, Southern Ontario Region, CBSA.

Reflection on the New Volvo VNL Series of Trucks

ecently, Road Today magazine was invited to Volvo North America headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina for an on-highway ride & drive event featuring the new Volvo VNL models. I was pleased to represent the publication and interact with various product experts from Volvo Trucks North America. Many enhancements have been included in the new design, the most obvious exterior changes being the shape of the truck. The new design is much more aerodynamic with the reshaped front end incorporating LED headlights that beautifully blend into the fenders in a swept back motion that flows seamlessly to the cab. The hood nose was narrowed by 4 inches at the sides and the bumper pushed forward slightly. This once chunky looking truck is a much more attractive vehicle when viewed from the front and the side. The LED headlights duct the heat from the heat sink behind the lamp to the inside of the housing to defrost the headlight assembly in harsh winter conditions to eliminate ice buildup. All lighting on the vehicle is state-ofthe-art LED lighting which is much longer lasting and energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. The exterior enhancements include the massive side mirrors and the new seventy inch sleeper all shaped to slip aerodynamically through the wind. Side skirts continue the smooth design lines that not only give the truck a modern profile, but also clean up airflow below the cab ahead of the rear wheels. Many hundreds of drivers were interviewed by the design team to see what concerns existed and what really mattered to the people who actually use and often live in these trucks. As a result of the feedback, the design team went to work to incorporate the suggestions into the actual finished product. A five inch, high definition, programmable colour LCD screen is

centered in the gauge cluster allowing the driver to display a wide range of vehicle data alerts and system settings. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes but also tilts relative to the steering column. Allowing the driver to select the most comfortable position for their individual needs avoids fatigue and strain on the driver’s neck, arms and shoulders. Coupled with active driver assist, which will warn the driver of an impending collision with a stationary object ahead and apply the brakes in an emergency situation and lane departure warning, the driver can safely maneuver the vehicle to avoid on-road incidents. The top of the dash has a recessed “bird bath” storage area with a removable mat for easy cleaning. Gone are the days of phones or other personal communication devices sliding around on the dash out of reach of the driver. Removable rubber floor mats make cleaning of the cab easier, but also allow easy access to the fasteners for the engine cover. Optional cup holders and storage can be mounted on the lower dash/engine cover as per driver preference and are made to break away in the event of a crash. Looking to the right where the dash
curves around toward the driver, is a new to the industry 7 inch infotainment display which offers high-end audio, Bluetooth, navigation and exterior camera options via touch-screen and physical controls. The Volvo folks like to say that “ at Volvo, safety is in their DNA”. The three point seat belts are height adjustable and Volvo is the only heavy truck manufacturer that offers a driver’s side airbag as standard equipment. Volvo is currently the only long haul truck manufacturer to use high strength steel and the cab exceeds the tough new ECE29 standard. The sleeper was lengthened from 61 inches to 70 inches and is 8 feet wide. An industry first adjustable, reclining bunk allows the driver to read or catch up with paperwork on the folding table top. The airplane style window shades slide into place in one easy motion. All cab temperature controls are within easy reach as is the larger fridge located just behind the driver’s seat. More storage space has been added for those long days on the road as well as USB and 12 volt charging ports in both the upper and lower bunk areas. The design team focused on creating a functional, ergonomic, calming and comforting space where the driver

could rest in comfort to get some restful sleep. LED lighting provides a more comfortable environment and lower power consumption. The range of trim options available to the buyer starts with the fleet package, then the touring and the limited. Each trim level offers progressively better material quality choices for tailoring the interior to the buyer’s needs and tastes. The Globetrotter name originated in the 1970’s and has now been introduced in North America as Volvo’s premium product. Volvo has long been known for excellent fuel mileage. The new D13 Turbo Compound engine uses a new, patented piston design that not only allows a more complete fuel burn, there is a 90 percent reduction of soot, taking a major strain off the emissions after treatment system. Coupled with aerodynamic and other tweaks, Volvo anticipates a fuel savings of up to 7.5 percent over previous engines. Speaking of exhaust after treatment systems, Volvo’s “one box” system reduces weight by 17 pounds (7.73 kgs) over 2 piece systems. The “one box” configuration saves frame rail space, better encasing of exhaust energy and improves muffler efficiency. The materials chosen for the construction of the system maximize the life of the system while being the most effective use of the technology currently available to eliminate hazardous emissions. Engine selection is most successful when the purchaser of the new vehicle is able to specify how and where the vehicle is to be used, but also for what purpose. Volvo has computer programs that can match specific vehicle powertrain combinations with the geographical and weather conditions of the area of intended use. Most truckers are looking for the most powerful engines, when sometimes, all it gets you is bragging rights at the truck stop and a huge fuel bill at the end of the month.
The new VN series in both the VNL (long haul) and VNR (regional or daycab) variants come with a full range of engine displacements and computer programmable power outputs. The D11, 10.8 liter, four stroke inline 6 cylinder engine puts out 325425 hp producing 1250-1550 lb-ft. of torque. The D13, 12.8 liter inline 6, puts out 375-500 hp and 1450-1850 lb-ft. of torque. If that is not enough power, the Cummins X-15, 14.9 liter inline 6 can be ordered. This engine puts out 400-565 hp with a torque output of 1450-1850 lb-ft. The engine choices cover the broad range of power needs required to get loads to their destinations economically, reliably and on-time. For this writer, who remembers the Ford Louisville trucks of the 1970’s with 2 shifters, the I-Shift transmissions are pure joy. I must admit that there was this old trucker prejudice against not shifting a manual transmission. As you age, the left knee, subjected to constant shifting in stop and go traffic, becomes a major health issue. Driving the Volvo with the I-Shift transmission was a huge revelation. It was like “where have you been my whole life”. To clear up any confusion, this is not an automatic transmission! This is a “manual transmission with a computer on top” as described by one of the Volvo product managers. The I-Shift transmission can also be specified for severe duty service and with crawler gears for vocational work in quarries and construction sites. The transmission shifts at the optimized shift points based on engine, drive train and load parameters to optimize fuel economy and pulling power. The clutching is done mechanically. Gone are the days when some “gear jammin’ cowboy” dumps the clutch trying to lift the front end of the truck off the ground at a stop sign while destroying the clutch, transmission, drive shafts and rear end gears. For fleet owners, the I-Shift transmission is another way to minimize maintenance costs incurred by drivers with an “it ain’t mine, so I don’t care” attitude. The driver can manually select gears to best suit his or her driving style and driving conditions, but if the tractor has been correctly specified for the anticipated use of the truck, putting
the transmission in drive is the driver’s best option. Transmission choices for the new truck also include Eaton Fuller 10, 13 and 18 speed manual transmissions as well as well as the Allison 6 speed automatic transmission. The I-Shift transmission is now installed in over 90 percent of new trucks built by Volvo and with constant refinements in the areas of drivability and reliability, that number will only increase. There are so many more features on these new trucks from Volvo that due to space limitations, I have not been able to address. What I have hopefully achieved is to give you an overview of a new vehicle offering that certainly impressed me. Is Volvo the only manufacturer that has all the features on these trucks? No. Do the other manufacturers compete with similar offerings ? Of course. In future articles, Road Today will highlight the other manufacturers’ offerings and let you, the reader decide what best suits your needs and budget. What I can honestly say is that in my opinion, Volvo has knocked this one out of the park. As a person who has been familiar with heavy trucks since the 1970’s and who owns heavy duty vocational vehicles, the Volvo group has done their homework and this new truck is certainly the product of a lot of hard work well done. Meritor Announces Electric Solutions Platform for Commercial Vehicles

eritor has announced it is developing a platform of electric drive axles and suspensions as well as supporting systems to position the company as a leader in electric solutions for the commercial vehicle market. Meritor’s flexible e-carrier design will be the foundation for various drivetrain configurations, including full electric, hybrid, single or tandem axles with various options based on application, according to Jay Craig, CEO and president for Meritor. Designed for city-delivery, medium-duty and transit bus, as well as off-road and severeduty applications, the electrified, lightweight carrier offers several benefits over remote-mounted
electric motor configurations. Meritor designed the e-carrier as a drop-in replacement of a conventional mechanical carrier that does not disrupt axle or suspension packaging. Because the electric motor is integrated into the axle, space is freed up for batteries and other electrical components, offering easier packaging and installation and a safer, more protected location inside the frame rails to mount the batteries. The solution also eliminates cost and weight associated with a driveline and mounting a remote motor with brackets. The following near-term electrified product solutions are under development by Meritor:

Truckers Welcome Extra Capacity at North America’s Busiest Border Crossing
T
he Canadian Trucking Alliance welcomed news the Government of Canada will permit the Detroit International Bridge Company to build a sixlane crossing to eventually replace the current Ambassador Bridge. Along with the planned Gordie Howe International Bridge set for construction a few kilometers away, the new span to be built next to the original Ambassador will significantly increase commercial truck crossing capacity at North America’s busiest border crossing. The 87-year-old, fourlane Ambassador will be dismantled once the new bridge has opened. The Ontario-Michigan gateway sees over 4.2 million trucks cross between the two existing Michigan and Ontario bridges (Ambassador and the Blue Water bridge in Sarnia-Port Huron) carrying $210 billion CDN worth of trade between Canada and
the United States. “With this development, the Canadian trucking industry and supply chains on both sides of the border – which depend on fast, efficient trade – should be welcoming not just one, but two contemporary new bridges capable of supporting international trade demands in a modern economy,” said CTA President Stephen Laskowski. “The additions of these two new modern structures – as well as significant investments recently made at the Blue Water Bridge – bodes well for the future of trade by truck between Canada and or largest trading partner.” Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau stated the construction of the replacement Ambassador Bridge, together with the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, will ensure that Canadians continue to benefit from the efficient movement of people and goods. Cummins Unveils Next Generation of Energy-Diverse Products and Technology Solutions
D
uring an event at its historic technical center in Columbus, Ind., Cummins unveiled its latest power solutions and energy-diverse products, demonstrating that the company is prepared to win with new and future technologies. The company displayed the latest in near-zero natural gas engine technology, super-efficient diesel engines (the X12 and X15), and shared plans to introduce a revolutionary heavy-duty diesel engine in 2022. Electrified Powertrain Solutions With the unveiling of the Concept Class 7 Urban Hauler EV, Cummins introduced a state-of-the art battery pack offering, redefining energyefficiency and density capabilities for the EV market. The truck is named Aeos, the mythological horse that drew the Sun Chariot with 3 other horses across the sky with the Greek God Helios. The lighter, denser battery design allows it to hold a longer charge for improved range and faster charging, reducing down time. Mack rolls out new Anthem highway truck

ack Trucks introduced its new, nextgeneration highway hero, the Mack Anthem, during the Mack Global Dealer Summit in Allentown, Pennsylvania last month. Road Today was in attendance to witness the launch of the Mack Anthem which is a re-engineered, redesigned and reimagined interpretation of what today’s highway truck should be – aerodynamic, comfortable and connected. With a bold grille and prominent Mack wordmark, the Anthem features an all-new exterior design with optimized aerodynamics for improved fuel efficiency. New driving and sleeping environments were crafted with an emphasis on increasing driver comfort and productivity. The Anthem is available in several configurations, including a Day Cab, an all-new 48-inch Flat Top Sleeper, and an all-new 70-inch Stand-Up Sleeper. A New Highway Hero Despite its chiseled appearance and muscular looks, the Mack Anthem’s new aerodynamic enhancements improve fuel efficiency by up to 3 percent. The Anthem’s redesigned hood
and bumper not only improve aerodynamics, they also help cut
service time. Both feature threepiece construction for improved serviceability in the event of damage. A new hood latch and release system also saves drivers’ time during pre-trip inspections. All exterior lighting on the Anthem is now exclusively LED, meaning brighter, longer-lasting lights that draw less energy. A new flat-bottom steering wheel is a Class 8 trucking industry first, providing improved dash visibility,
as well as easier ingress and egress. The new steering wheel also contains illuminated controls for cruise control, Bluetooth and the audio system. Behind the steering wheel, Mack’s Co-Pilot display has been updated with a new 5-inch, fullcolor screen for improved visibility and more intuitive navigation. Co-Pilot provides drivers with a convenient way to monitor vehicle information, including engine and oil temperatures, trip odometers, after treatment status, tire pressures and more. A Pre-Trip Assistant guides drivers through
Mack Power The Anthem is available with the 13-liter Mack MP8 engine producing up to 505 horsepower and 1,860 lb.-ft. of torque depending on spec. Several enhancements to improve efficiency and productivity are included, such as a patented wave piston design that enables more complete fuel combustion and a common-rail fuel system to more accurately control fuel injection. The 11-liter Mack MP7 is also available as an option on the Anthem. With up to 425 horsepower and 1,560 lb.-ft. of torque, the MP7 gives customers a powerful choice for weightconscious applications. Mack’s Super Econodyne down speeding packages (enabling a lower cruise rpm to help save fuel) are available with both Mack MP7 and MP8 engines. Productivity-Boosting Support Bendix Wingman Fusion, a camera- and radar-based driver assistance solution, comes standard on all Anthem models. Fusion provides collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning, assisting drivers in staying safe on the highway. Mack also introduced Mack Connect which turns data produced by the truck, the driver and the service process into insights and actions, resulting in superior support and service to Mack customers. Continental Presents ContiConnect Digital Tire Monitoring Platform A t the North American Commercial Vehicle (NACV) show, Continental displayed its newest pioneering technology to make commercial fleets safer, more efficient and intelligent: the ContiConnect digital tire monitoring platform. The company has created an efficient solution for remote tire monitoring, allowing fleet managers to see tire pressure and temperature data for the entire fleet in a single web portal, every time trucks return to the fleet yard. With ContiConnect, fleets are able to replace manual and routine tire care with automatic and targeted care, fixing issues where they are known to exist and saving inspection and maintenance time. ContiConnect helps fleets lower their costs and increase uptime in multiple ways: saving maintenance time, protecting tires from longterm damage, reducing tire-related breakdowns and tire wear, and improving fuel efficiency and safety, among others. Identifying and resolving tire issues immediately upon return to the fleet yard helps protect the tire from long-term damage, ensuring maximum removal miles and improved casing retreadability. Continental’s tire sensors can identify creeping air loss, one of the major causes of tire failure, before it would typically be noticed in a pre- or post-trip inspection, helping to reduce tirerelated breakdowns on the road. In addition, verifying proper tire inflation guarantees the highest possible fuel efficiency to save fuel costs, reduces tire wear for long tire life, and helps to prevent tire blowouts for optimal safety. As trucks enter the fleet yard, the yard reader station picks up data from the sensors and transmits it to the ContiConnect web portal via a cellular network. The platform also features customizable text and email notifications, so the fleet manager, maintenance supervisor, or other personnel can receive immediate alerts when low tire pressure or high tire temperature is recorded. This allows fleets to act proactively to fix issues rather than spending valuable time performing manual pressure checks. Tire sensors are retrofitted onto a fleet’s existing tires through a simple installation process. Select tire models are also available direct from the factory with sensors mounted on the liner during tire production, making it easier than ever for fleets to outfit their trucks for any of Continental’s digital tire monitoring systems. I
t is said that once a tradition dies, it is next to impossible to revive that tradition. When it was announced in early 2017, that after thirtyone years, the Fergus Truck Show would no longer run, shock waves went through the Southern Ontario trucking community, lamenting the demise of what had become an annual late July tradition for truckers, trucking companies, dealers, owner-operators and heavy truck

enthusiasts. Out of the ashes of the Fergus show, some of the organizers of that show decided that the tradition of the Fergus Truck Show should continue on the same July weekend and that going forward, the show would be called The Great Canadian Truck Show @ Varney. The inaugural show was held at Full Throttle Speedway in Varney on July 21, 22 and 23, 2017. Varney is a small community in
Grey County, Ontario. According to Kevin Klein, one of the event organizers, sixty one trucks showed up and were on display. Truck pulls, featuring local pullers on the speedway’s front stretch provided Saturday night action. On Sunday, a thunderstorm threat cancelled the scheduled stock car racing, which somewhat diminished the anticipated crowd. The feedback from the participants was that everyone had

a great time looking at the trucks and just having a relaxing weekend ahead of a return to driving for a living on Monday. Many of the trucks were livestock units, giving a nod to the local trucking industry. Numerous trucking companies and owneroperators had their big rigs all polished up and on display. One of the vehicles on display was a custom creation that took the owner ten years to build by hand. The Cat-engined truck chassis was converted to a custom camper that attracted much attention at the show. At the writing of this article, all indications are that there will be a second annual show in 2018. Road Today will keep you posted with details as they emerge. RT

Carrier Transicold Offers New Engineless Refrigeration Unit
C
arrier Transicold’s new model 35X direct-drive unit provides refrigeration for perishable and frozen cargoes for small- to mediumsized box trucks and large delivery vans. “With an attractive modern exterior design, the 35X unit expands our direct-drive product line, offering excellent fresh and frozen protection for cargo vans and box trucks in the 12- to 14-foot range,” said Scott Parker, product manager, truck products, Carrier Transicold. The new unit was featured by Carrier Transicold at the North American Commercial Vehicle Show, held in Atlanta last month. “Direct-drive units in Carrier Transicold’s X-series are engineless, vehiclepowered systems, providing an economical alternative to diesel powered units,” Parker explained. “They also can help fleets reduce their environmental impact since there is no additional

fuel consumption or related emissions from a dedicated refrigeration unit engine.” The 35X unit provides refrigeration capacity of 10,500 BTUs at 35 degrees Fahrenheit (100 F ambient). As with other units in the series – the 20X, 40X and 50X – the 35X includes an exteriormounted condenser unit, a compressor that mounts to the truck engine and a narrowprofile SlimLine evaporator that fits tightly to the ceiling of the cargo area, helping to
maximize cargo space. As a split system, the 35X unit provides flexible mounting options for the condenser, either to the nose of a box truck or roof of a van. The unit’s Cab Command 2 digital controller provides quick and easy setpoint configuration and the ability to program the unit for automatic defrost cycles. It also offers diagnostic capabilities and hour-meters to track usage for service interval planning. RT

Women Have What It Takes To Be In Trucking
W
omen have what it takes to be in trucking. This was the message delivered at a recent Smart Trucker Seminar in Grimsby Ontario in September. The seminar focused on careers for women in the industry and how they can have satisfying careers in a male dominated industry. The seminar kicked off with panel discussion including Shelley Uvanile-Hesch who has been driving for 27 years, Janet Hewitt who works as a driving instructor and former driver with over 12 years of experience, and Vickie deVos owner of Fleet-Tax Services who has been working in the industry with owner operators and trucking companies for decades. The focus of this discussion was on what will attract women to the industry and the different career options available. An important part of the panel discussion was the fact that trucking is one of the few industries that provides equal pay for both men and women. After a great meal and some sponsor announcements we moved on to the main attraction of the night and the keynote presentation with Shelley UvanileHesch. Shelley is the CEO of the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada (WTFC) which is an organization helping women have successful careers in the transportation industry. Shelley gave an overview of her career of 27 years throughout the presentation along with tips on how to have a successful driving career and information on how to get started to be successful in the industry. After a short break, Manan Gupta of Road Today Media Group offered a presentation on road safety and specifically distracted driving. Manan is a member of many safety groups and has won awards due to his dedication to safety in the industry. The evening was rounded out with raffle draws and closing remarks. What I found interesting as a moderator of the event is that women are ready to work in the industry. It was mentioned many times over the evening that we need to introduce the industry to girls in high schools or even earlier so they understand the career options available. As we spoke with people in the room from safety personnel, recruiting, driving, administration, and some students it was apparent that women can do the job. The other message that seemed to run through the evening behind the scenes is that women don’t want to be treated any different

Each time it was mentioned someone was able to come up with an exception and offer an example of another woman driver that works in that role exceptionally well. My personal take on women in the industry is that they do have what it takes to get the job done. In my days as a driver I worked with many women that in my opinion out drove the men, were dedicated to their job, and could handle any load given to them. I have female friends that are owner operators, drivers, and work in many careers within the industry in other roles and all do a great job. Women can do the jobs in trucking, we just need to get them thinking that it is a viable career opportunity. RT

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

Mercedes-Benz Vans gives glimpse of the new Sprinter
A
s part of North America’s largest commercial vehicle show in Atlanta, MercedesBenz Vans unveiled the first details of the new Sprinter. The design sketch indicates that the most important market launch in the van sector in 2018 will also set new standards in terms of appearance. The new features include the comprehensive introduction of driving assistance systems and connectivity services in combination with new telematics, which will bring a leap forward in efficiency for vehicle and fleet management. Moreover, the new Sprinter can be even more precisely adapted to individual transport and sector requirements thanks to a considerably extended range of variants. The market launch will commence in Europe in the first half of 2018, with the other markets to follow. Further details of the vehicle will be announced in the coming months. The NACV Show offered the perfect setting for revealing the first details of the new Sprinter fully reflecting the future initiative adVANce, which was presented in autumn 2016. It aims at megatrends such as digitalization and urbanisation. The accompanying realignment of the company is driving
forward the transformation from purely a vehicle manufacturer to a provider of complex, comprehensive mobility solutions. The first new

Daimler’s Indian commercial vehicles brand BharatBenz celebrates five years in the market
M
arking an unprecedented ramp-up in India’s commercial vehicle industry, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of the market launch of BharatBenz trucks. Since September 2012, the brand has continuously advanced despite adverse conditions.. More than 55,000 trucks have been delivered to customers across India. The vehicles are tailored to the Indian market and specific customers’ needs. The brand progressed into double-digit market share in recent months and extended its position as clear number three in heavy-duty trucks. In the current year 2017, DICV expects to achieve significant growth with BharatBenz. Reflecting persistent strong order intake, DICV decided to add a second shift at its truck plant in Oragadam near Chennai. The increase in output

will also cater to expected further growth in DICV’s export business, in which the company has sold more than 10,000 trucks since 2013 and

he Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF), in partnership with State Farm Canada, has launched a Drug-Impaired Driving Learning Centre (DIDLC). The Centre is a web-based resource that was designed to share the latest research about the problem, increase awareness, and inform the development of effective strategies to tackle it. Drug-impaired driving has become a top priority among governments, law enforcement, and other road safety stakeholders in the past few years. Increases in the proportion of drivers who self-report driving within two hours of consuming drugs, combined with increases in the proportion of drivers killed in road crashes who tested positive for drugs, warrant attention and concern. Public awareness of the impairing effects of many drugs is quite low, and strategies to reduce the prevalence of this problem are much needed. The effects of alcohol consumption on driving are widely acknowledged; however, much less is known about the effects of different drugs on driving. This, in combination with the permissive attitudes among young drivers towards
marijuana and driving, suggests that work is needed to increase awareness about the risks. “Drug-impaired driving is a source of concern for many stakeholders because this cross-cutting issue affects drivers of all ages,” said Dr. Ward Vanlaar, Chief Operating Officer at TIRF. “According to TIRF’s National Fatality Database, 44.5% of drivers killed in road crashes tested positive for drugs in 2013; a larger proportion than those drivers testing positive for alcohol (31.6%). Whereas young drivers were more likely to test positive for marijuana, older drivers were more likely to test positive for prescription drugs.” TIRF has created the DIDLC to support the efforts of governments and road safety stakeholders to prevent and reduce drug-impaired driving. This comprehensive resource contains several modules and is structured in a user-friendly, accessible, question and answer format. It also includes a variety of fact sheets that can be used by health professionals, teachers, parents and teens to increase knowledge and awareness about drugimpaired driving. Celiac Disease

or the past few years, we have been hearing a lot about gluten and gluten free diets in the media. For those of you that don’t know, gluten is a protein that is found in rye, wheat and barley. Most people’s bodies can digest gluten with no problems, however, for some people gluten can cause severe symptoms. Celiac disease is an immune condition or sensitivity to gluten. For people with celiac disease, eating gluten causes an immune response in the small intestine. This response eventually leads to inflammation in the lining of the intestines. Prolonged inflammation results in damage to wall of the intestine. This damage causes the body to be unable to absorb nutrients that are required for good health and growth. The exact cause of celiac disease is unknown, however, there does seem to be a genetic component as it tends to run in families. In some

Having Type 1 diabetes is also a risk factor. The signs and symptoms of celiac disease can vary significantly from person to person. However, diarrhea, weight loss, constipation and stomach pain are commonly experienced. In addition, some people develop problems out side of the digestive system such as anemia, osteoporosis, joint pain and skin conditions. If your doctor suspects that you may have celiac disease, they will order blood tests to look for specific antibodies in the blood which indicates an immune reaction to gluten. Your doctor may also recommend an endoscopy to better visualize the small intestines and to take a tissue sample. Unfortunately, there is no cure for celiac disease. The goal of treatment
is to manage the symptoms by eating a gluten free diet. Due to the fact that gluten is present in many foods, your doctor may refer you to a dietitian. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products generally do not contain any gluten. It is important to carefully read food labels as gluten is contained in many processed foods. The good news is that once gluten is removed from your diet, the inflammation in the small intestine will decrease. In addition to a gluten free diet, your doctor may prescribe steroids to help reduce the inflation in the small intestines. Vitamin and mineral supplementation is often recommended to help decrease nutritional deficiencies. Most people start to feel better within a few weeks. However, it may take several years for all symptoms to fully resolve. Until next month, drive safely. RT

bENDIX ANNOUNCES NEW CAPABILITIES AND SYSTEM ENHANCEMENTS FOR WINGMAN FUSION DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
T
he next evolution of the Bendix Wingman Fusion advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) will offer highway departure braking and multi-lane automatic emergency braking, along with strengthened collision mitigation and braking capabilities to more effectively reduce vehicle speeds in hazardous situations. The new features, along with further enhancement of existing collision mitigation technology, will come through software advancements, meaning current Fusion customers will be able to upgrade to the new capabilities with no need to purchase new hardware components. Additionally, the next generation of Fusion will be able to link with the new Bendix BlindSpotter 2.0 Side Object Detection System, integrating data from the sideradar unit and enabling additional features integrating BlindSpotter information with Fusion capabilities to help driver mitigate side-swipe and blindspot crashes. Wingman Fusion combines and cross-checks information from multiple sources to deliver enhanced rear-end collision mitigation, alerts when speeding, and braking on stationary vehicles. Fusion also helps drivers avoid additional crash situations, including rollovers, loss-ofcontrol – thanks to Bendix ESP full stability technology, which is included as part of the system – and sideswipe crashes, while prioritizing alerts to help reduce

driver distraction. Building on Fusion’s current lane departure technology, the new highway departure braking capability will alert the driver and apply brakes if the system determines the vehicle has left the roadway. And multi-lane automatic emergency braking means that if Fusion is applying the brakes due to a vehicle in the lane ahead and the driver switches to an adjacent lane, the system will continue applying the brakes if it detects another car ahead in the new lane – helping the driver avoid both the first and potentially second situation, something that can occur when multiple lanes of traffic are blocked on a highway. The upcoming Fusion 2.0 will also be able to provide full braking power on the tractor, compared with the two-thirds power currently possible. Combined with the improved sensor and data analysis, this means that in an emergency situation, the system will be able to reduce a vehicle’s speed by as much as 50 percent more than the current Fusion system.
Built on the Bendix ESP Electronic Stability Program full-stability system, Wingman Fusion uses deep, multi-sensor integration to create a highly detailed and accurate data picture that enables the system to recognize potential problems sooner and intervene earlier. Quicker action on the system’s part makes Fusion more effective at mitigating possible collisions and reducing the severity of collisions. Fusion’s camera is powered by the Mobileye Systemon-Chip EyeQ processor with state-of-the-art vision algorithms. Major North American truck brands offering Fusion as a factory-installed option include Navistar’s International, Kenworth Truck Company, Peterbilt Motors Company, and Mack Trucks. Volvo Trucks North America offers Volvo Active Driver Assist, which is based upon Bendix Wingman Fusion collision mitigation technology. Volvo is the first North American OEM to offer this technology as standard on its new VNL and VNR series tractors. RT
