elcome to the September 2010 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the award-winning magazine for the changing trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. It’s time to get ready for National Trucking Week 2010, which rolls out September 5 – 12. The event is held annually to spotlight the important contributions made by the more than 500,000 Canadian men and women who keep the country’s freight moving. Trucks move 90 percent of all consumer products and foodstuffs within Canada and almost two thirds, by value, of our trade with the United States, our largest trading partner. National Trucking Week serves as an ideal platform to thank the men and women who have chosen to build a career in the trucking industry. For celebration ideas, visit the Canadian Trucking Alliance web site www.cantruck.ca While the truck shows are mostly over in and around the GTA, many leading truck dealerships continue to organize special customer appreciation events. We would encourage our readers to visit such events for networking and information gathering. Two such events coming up ahead are the Open House at SelecTrucks in Mississauga (Sept 18) and the Paccar MX Engine/T700
tour at Kenworth Truck Centre in Concord (Sep 24). Look out for more details inside the magazine. Truxpo - Western Canada’s largest truck trailer and equipment show will be held in Abbotsford on October 1st and 2nd. Road Today Media Group and Western Trucking News have teamed together and will be exhibiting at Booth 123. We invite our readers to visit Truxpo and stop by our booth for a chance to win exciting prizes. Ontario law requires motorists who see the flashing lights or hear the sirens of an approaching emergency vehicle pull to the right and stop the moment it is safe to do so. Drivers must slow down and proceed with caution when approaching a parked emergency vehicle with its lights flashing. Every second counts when emergency vehicles, such as police cars, fire trucks and ambulances are rushing to respond to calls for help - any delay can be critical for emergency responders and those who urgently need them. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Good Morning Today’ our award winning weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am and please keep channels of communication open and send us your valuable feedback and suggestions, as improvement is a continuous process. Drive safe and see you next month!

DHL Launches New Lighting Retrofit Carbon Efficiency Improvement Program Across the Americas Region Carbon Emissions Improvement Goal of 30 Percent by End of 2020 DHL has announced the launch of a Lighting Retrofit Carbon Efficiency Improvement Program by the Global Forwarding division across the Americas region – setting an aggressive carbon emissions improvement goal of five percent over 2009 baseline figures by the end of 2010. The program will initially be rolled out in the United States before expanding to Mexico and Canada. In conventional warehousing, an operation’s largest source of electrical energy consumption is lighting used within the facility. The single most impactful carbon abatement strategy for facilities is therefore to use energy efficient lighting. Once DHL Global Forwarding selects a site, a questionnaire is generated in order to better evaluate the overall savings. Several factors are

considered in the business case, ranging from: energy savings, maintenance and repairs costs, CO2 savings, the type of lighting and amount of bulbs required etc. Once the proposal is accepted, the overall process from the start to the completion of the installation, can take an average of two months. The rollout of the lighting retrofit program will start with DHL Global Forwarding operations in the United States. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania operation will be the first facility to undergo the lighting retrofit with Dallas, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; and Miami, Florida to follow. The San Juan, Puerto Rico operations is also planned in the initial rollout before expanding into Mexico and Canada.

Loblaw Becomes First Canadian Retailer to Pilot Hybrid Class 8 Truck

more weight from the same truck thereby reducing the number of trucks on the road. The hybrid truck being tested by Loblaw was manufactured by Peterbilt Motor Company and contains a supplemental parallel hybrid power system. The hybrid truck looks like most other transport trucks on the road. The key difference is the hybrid system which helps the truck to accelerate from an idle. When the truck engages its braking system, electricity is created that is stored in the truck’s battery to power the truck. Many Loblaw banner stores are located in urban environments where there are many deliveries requiring starts and stops in traffic making it ideal conditions to test this type of hybrid technology.
oblaw Companies Limited has announced that it is currently testing a Class 8 truck run by hybrid technology. The pilot is in support of the Company’s commitment to improve fuel efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of its corporate transport fleet. As part of Loblaw’s 2010 corporate social responsibility commitment, the Company set a target to improve the fuel efficiency of its corporate transport fleet by two per cent compared to its 2009 level. On the road since July, Loblaw is evaluating the hybrid truck’s fuel efficiency throughout the Company’s urban transportation routes in Ontario. The pilot will measure the potential benefits that hybrid technology could have to its corporate trucking fleet. “We constantly challenge ourselves in all areas of our business against our corporate social responsibility principles. The hybrid truck pilot is one of the many initiatives undertaken in our supply chain to meet our fuel economy goals for 2010. We believe we are on the right track to once again lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions associated with the transportation of goods to our stores,” said Robert Wiebe, senior vice president, Supply Chain, Loblaw Companies Limited. The outcome of this pilot will help to determine the number of trucks within the Company’s corporate fleet that can be replaced with hybrid technology in coming years. Additional initiatives Loblaw has undertaken to improve fuel efficiency include the use of biodiesel, reducing truck idling times, installing side fairings on trailers and the use of multi-axle trailers allowing for the pulling of

Cast your ballot Vote for Worst and Best Roads Y
officials and let them know what all of our roads should look like,” said Faye Lyons, Government Relations Specialist, CAA South Central Ontario. Last year, Steeles Avenue topped CAA’s list of 20 Worst Roads. This year, Steeles Avenue has undergone major road reconstruction and resurfacing. In 2009, the federal government announced it was providing infrastructure funding to Ontario as part of its economic stimulus plan. In the spring of 2010, construction crews began filling in the pot holes, cracks and utility cuts not only on Steeles Avenue, but also on Finch, Lawrence and Victoria Park Avenues. In fact, 90 per cent of the Top 20 Worst Roads are slated for repairs. “Almost 10,000 votes were cast in last year’s annual campaign and your votes made a difference, but the work is still not done. And now more than ever your votes count. With an upcoming municipal election, there is no better time than now to let your politician know what transportation issues matter to you,” added Lyons.
ou’re driving along, when unexpectedly you feel that familiar jolt after hitting a pothole. Up ahead there’s a sea of red brake lights and before you know it, you are stuck in traffic. Don’t just sit there in bumper to bumper traffic on a pothole ridden street, be part of the solution. Vote in CAA’s 8th annual Worst Roads campaign. CAA wants to know the name of that road and others, as well as, bridges and highways in desperate need of repair. And if you happen to drive along a recently paved, resurfaced road, free of cracks and utility cuts, CAA wants to know the name of that street, too. For the first time, not only will you be able to nominate the worst roads in your neighbourhood, but you will also be able to cast a ballot for the best roads by clicking on www.caasco.com/ worstroads or by becoming a fan of Ontario’s Worst Roads at www.facebook.com/worstroads. “We want to know what a good road looks like in the eyes of our voters. We want to share that information with elected

Kenworth Adds Lane Departure Warning System as Option for Kenworth T700
K
enworth Truck Company now offers the Takata SafeTraK 3 lane departure warning system as an option for the Kenworth
T700. The system combines an interior, windshield-mounted video camera with vision software to help promote enhanced driver awareness and attention to turn signal usage by sending audio alert notifications of inadvertent lane departures to the driver. Takata SafeTraK 3, which is compatible with the standard J1939 wiring system, fully integrates camera, optics, processor and power supply into a compact unit. Kenworth factory installation includes the unit, wiring harness, two headliner-mounted speakers, dash-mounted rocker switch and system status lamp, and driver’s guide for the glove box. A pre-wire option is also available. Takata SafeTraK 3 must be specified with an EPA 2007 or EPA 2010 engine and Kenworth’s optional curved, one-piece windshield. The system also is available as an option for the Kenworth T660 and Kenworth T800. The Kenworth T700, which targets over the road and team driver operations, offers a spacious wide-cab and 75-inch AERODYNE sleeper with soaring 8-foot cathedral ceiling, best in class forward lighting, and excellent serviceability features. TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index up 53 Percent in July
INSURANCE
T
ransCore’s Canadian Freight Index has showed a 53 percent increase year-over-year. After registering continuous increases from January to June this year, with June being the highest recorded freight volume since June 2008, July freight volume dipped slightly by 19 percent compared to the previous month. This fluctuation is consistent with the five-year historical trend representing seasonality, vacation and construction activity. Combined cross-border loads were up 69 percent year-over-year while equipment availability continued to decrease by 18 percent from July 2009. TransCore’s Loadlink freight matching database constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries and has been available to Canadian subscribers since its inception in 1990. Over 12 million full loads, LTL (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually. As a result of this high volume, TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight movement and provides a historical account of the domestic and cross border spot market freight movement. “Operation Corridor is an excellent opportunity to educate commercial vehicle drivers about the importance of having a flawless safety checklist. When you consider the high volume of large, loadbearing commercial trucks on our highways each hour of each day, it is imperative that those who drive them are 100 per cent compliant with this checklist because it will ultimately save lives”. - Chief Superintendent Bill Grodzinski, Divisional Commander, OPP Highway Safety Division.

ast August, US President Obama traveled to Navistar’s manufacturing facility in Wakarusa, Ind. to announce a $39.2 million grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and administered by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop and deploy electric trucks. One year later, Navistar’s eStar all-electric truck is coming off the production line and making its way into some of the nation’s most environmentally focused fleets. Following a production kick-off at the Wakarusa plant in May and introductory launch events in Portland, Ore., and Sacramento, Calif., in May and June, the eStar all-electric truck is generating significant interest in the marketplace. As customers begin taking delivery of the eStar vehicle, Navistar continues to build and develop its sales, service and support network through local dealerships in key markets. The eStar all-electric truck is the first medium-duty commercial vehicle to receive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification as a clean fuel fleet vehicle as well as California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification as a zero-emissions vehicle. This Class 2c-3 electric truck—the first in its category—has a range of up to 100 miles per charge, making it ideal for many urban applications. When it returns to its home base at the end of the day, it can be plugged in and fully recharged within six to eight hours. Unlike other electric trucks that are reconfigured models of fossil-fuel trucks, the eStar truck has been purpose-built for electric

power, creating an advantage with a low center of gravity (the battery is between the frame rails, not mounted on top) and a 36-foot turning circle. The eStar is engineered with superior aerodynamics, a walk-through cab and a quick-change cassette-type battery that can be swapped out in 20 minutes, enabling aroundthe-clock operation. It is capable of carrying payloads up to two tons. With zero tailpipe emissions, each eStar truck can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 10 tons annually. Drivers will be able to experience the ultimate in ergonomic design as the windshield provides nearly 180-degree visibility, the low-floor design provides easy loading/unloading and the noise level is near zero, which makes this nimble vehicle ideal for urban areas facing noise challenges. The versatile eStar all-electric truck is uniquely positioned in the Class 2c-3 commercial category, offering different body sizes and a two-ton payload capacity. The eStar truck is the first medium-duty commercial vehicle to receive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification as a clean fuel fleet vehicle as well as California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification as a zero-emissions vehicle. Beyond its environmental benefits as an all-electric truck that doesn’t require diesel or gasoline, the eStar truck is a fun-to-drive, highly functional commercial truck allowing for quiet, comfortable operation. It has a distinctive design, set off by a sweeping, panoramic windshield and easy in-and-out access for drivers. www.roadtoday.com
Continental’s Regional Steer Tire Family Now Verified by SmartWay •
HSR2 , HSR1 and HSR truck tires optimal for regional applications • Tires join HSR2 Eco Plus to make a complete family of verified regional steer tires • Low rolling resistance was verified by the U.S. EPA he entire regional steer tire family of products from Continental Tire the Americas, LLC has now been added to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWayTransport Partnership’s list of verified fuel savings technologies. Continental’s HSR2 (Heavy Steer Regional), HSR1 and HSR truck tires were recently verified by SmartWay as low rolling resistance truck tires. The HSR2 is the latest generation of regional steer and all-position truck tires, featuring a 23/32” deep improved cut and chip resistant tread compound for optimal performance; patented groove geometry for better resistance to cracking and tearing; a protective curb rib for high scrub applications; and the VAI + system of visual alignment and tread depth indicators. HSR1, also in the regional tire family, features reduced noise and excellent wet traction through an optimized tread pattern. The HSR is a previous generation tire which is still in use by many regional fleets today, and its tough casing lasts multiple lifetimes as a retreaded tire across North America.
Continental offers a wide selection of truck tires that have been verified by the EPA for low rolling resistance when used for Class 8, line-haul trucks. The complete list of SmartWay verified tire products which are currently available from Continental includes: Steer: HSL2, HSL2 Eco Plus, HSR2, HSR2 Eco Plus, HSR1, HSR Drive: HDL Eco Plus, HDL2 Eco Plus, HDL2 DL Eco Plus Trailer: HTL Eco Plus, HTL1 Tires verified by the EPA for lower rolling resistance can provide a reduction in NOx emissions and an estimated fuel savings of 3% or greater, relative to the “best selling” new tires for line haul trucks, when used on all five axles on long haul class 8 trucks. According to the EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership Web site, its projected savings of between 3.3 and 6.6 billion gallons of diesel fuel per year represents a savings of as much as 150 million barrels of oil per year. This is the equivalent of taking 12 million cars off the road, leading SmartWay partners to save nearly $10 billion in operating costs. Continental also participates in the SmartWay Transport Partnership as a shipper partner, committing to reduce its environmental impacts from ground freight transportation. The majority of Continental tire products are shipped within SmartWay’s environmentally sensitive guidelines.

CN Rail implements measures to tackle wait times at Brampton intermodal terminal
C
N Rail is implementing new measures to deal with the problem of excessive wait times at its Brampton Intermodal Terminal. Drivers have recently reported waiting at the site for up to six hours with inadequate amenities. New staff hires, improved gate technology and additional cranes used to handle containers are being introduced to the site to help tackle a range of problems, including reducing the amount of time container haulers wait around to pick up and offload cargo. CN has also increased management presence at the site to assist the flow of traffic at the yard, and already hired 15 new staff members. CN will increase the number of mobile cranes used to load and offload containers by two (bringing the total number to 19) and shuttle a large portion of loaded containers to a satellite facility in Mississauga.
CN Rail’s Brampton Intermodal Terminal (BIT) is the largest on the company’s North American rail network. In 2007, BIT handled approximately 660,000 intermodal units. Strategically located in Brampton, Ontario, BIT is CN’s intermodal hub for the Greater Toronto Area and Southwestern Ontario, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. BIT transfers between CN train and truck (both independent and CN managed) containers (import and domestic) or highway trailers arriving from or destined to: key ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert, B.C., Halifax and Montréal; major centres in Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario and the Western provinces, and key cities in the U.S. along CN’s network, including Chicago, Memphis, Tennessee, and New Orleans.

CSA 2010 Increases Importance of Truck Maintenance, Kenworth PremierCare Programs Assist Customers
T
his fall, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will implement the Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 (CSA 2010) program, which includes more stringent penalties for violations. This program will make truck maintenance even more important, according to Dick Von Lehman, Kenworth PremierCare national sales manager for service. “Under CSA 2010, truck drivers will now receive points on their record for such things as leaky wheel seals or other minor defects,” Von Lehman noted. “As a result, drivers will have an extra incentive to have their PM work and additional repairs done on the road at a Kenworth dealership. The Kenworth dealership offers the advantage of being able to perform warranty work and any other repair, helping to eliminate potential inspection infractions.” Proper truck maintenance can help reduce downtime and prevent costly repairs. Kenworth PremierCare ExpressLube Service is available for heavy and medium duty trucks at participating Kenworth dealers in the United States and Canada. The service offers a four-filter oil change, complete chassis lube and 20-point vehicle inspection. The inspection includes a check of belts, hoses, tires, wheels, springs, U-bolts, bushings, shocks, brake lining and components, exhaust system mounting, fluid levels, instrument gauges, lights, reflectors, glass, mirrors and horns. “Kenworth PremierCare ExpressLube Service assists customers in keeping their trucks well maintained and only takes about an hour,” said Von Lehman. “This convenient Kenworth dealer service helps customers get back on the road quickly.” In addition, Kenworth PremierCare Preventive Maintenance enables fleets to focus on running their primary business, instead of managing a

maintenance facility. The program, which is open to any heavy and medium duty truck brand, provides convenient maintenance service through more than 300 Kenworth dealers in the United States and Canada. Kenworth PremierCare also offers other services. Kenworth PremierCare Express Air Conditioning Service features a 27-point inspection and includes a complete evacuation and recharge of the air conditioning system, receiver/ drier replacement, up to five pounds of R134a refrigerant,
and compressor oil top-off. Kenworth PremierCare Connect (www.kenworthconnect. com) streamlines parts ordering by electronically linking customers with their preferred Kenworth dealer. The program is offered in three versions – WebConnect, Connect Professional, and Connect Enterprise. The Kenworth PremierCare Customer Center (1-800-KWASSIST) is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Customer Center handles emergency roadside assistance calls and schedules service for preventive maintenance customers, among other services. No registration fee is required.

fter seven months’ production of its EPA 2010 certified and compliant engines, Cummins has announced that it has built and shipped over 26,000 Heavy-Duty and Mid Range engines with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust after treatment. These engines are delivering on the company’s promises of better fuel economy, better reliability and better performance. Cummins has a history of technology leadership in diesel emissions controls and has been on a long-term path to provide a stable, reliable product architecture for its customers. Cummins was first to certify to the EPA 2002 on-highway standards using cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and added Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) for 2007. Perhaps most significantly, Cummins was the first to meet the 2010 emissions standards – a full three years early – with both the Ram Turbo Diesel and the Cummins Westport ISL G. During this time, Cummins was already producing Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for Europe and is now the leading manufacturer worldwide. Cummins has developed and certified 13 engine families to the EPA and California Air Resources Board (ARB) regulations to serve over 60 OEM customers in 180 vehicle installations. The ISX15 Family 1 engines feature On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) with improved emissions control warnings and alerts to the vehicle operator. OBD will be required by the EPA and will be featured on all engine families beginning in 2013.

THE PACCAR MX ENGINE MAKES ITS GRAND ENTRANCE!
P
eterbilt Ontario Truck Centres was proud to host a stop of PACCAR MX Engine as the tour makes its way across North America. The tour stopped at Peterbilt of Mississauga located on Eglinton Avenue on August 11, 2010. Guests were treated to a tour through a well equipped trailer which showcased why the PACCAR MX is going to have an impact on the Class 8 Trucking market in North America. Drivers also had the chance to test drive a 386 equipped with an MX engine. The PACCAR MX is NOT new, just new to the North American trucking market. It has been running in Europe for years and there are over 125,000 trucks running the highways in Europe. The engine has successfully been meeting the Euro 4 and Euro 5 certified SCR emission systems for several years. This engine, using a combined SCR and EGR system is ready for the EPA2010 requirements. Why is the MX going to have such an impact in North America? For one it boasts the ONLY B10 rating for engines in the industry! That means at 1,000,000 miles it will only have an average of 10% major failure rate. The rest of the market only offers a B50 rate (50% average failure rate).
That’s just the beginning:
The engine (block + head) is made from CGI (Compact Graphite Iron) which is 25% lighter than conventional grey iron and yet 75% stronger! Range of HP is 380 to 485 HP, with upto 1750 ft. lbs. of torque 12.9 Litre Engine Electronically controlled high pressure fuel-injection system Integral Engine Brake Significantly lower in-cab noise levels Increased fuel efficiency Over 500 Certified service centres in North America Need more information? Shaw Tracking Announces Next-Generation Trailer Tracking
R
Trailer Tracks 210 Offers More Memory and Processing Power, Embedded Solar Power, More Compact Design, Bluetooth and More
T
he new Trailer Tracks 210 (TT210) solution by Shaw Tracking delivers timely information about the load status and location of trailers with enhanced features that improve the return on investment for fleets that incorporate trailer tracking into their operations. TT210 is slated for commercial availability in the first quarter of 2011. TT210 is the successor to Shaw Tracking’s Untethered Trailer Tracks (T2) trailer management solution. It delivers additional features to transportation and logistics companies seeking maximum return on investment, enhanced asset and cargo security, and improved asset utilization. The features include: • An embedded solar panel and antenna • Improved memory and processing power • A more compact design that enables simpler, less time-consuming installation • Bluetooth capability - configuration and servicing of the unit Both TT210 and T2 leverage the same Trailer Tracks host environment, so customers using either or both platforms will benefit from future host development and will manage their trailer assets from a single Web portal. Additionally, because both TT210 and T2 can operate within a single fleet, customers will continue to derive value from their investment in both platforms.
esponding to customer demands for superior force protection, mobility, ride quality and reliability, ArvinMeritor has announced the launch of its Meritor ProTec High Mobility Independent Suspensions (HMIS) Series. Designed for tactical and combat wheeled military vehicles and armored personnel carriers, as well as off-highway, emergency and custom chassis vehicles, the ProTec HMIS is available in three configurations — Series 30 for light duty, Series 40 for medium and medium-heavy duty and Series 50 for heavy-duty applications. Among the innovative features of the ProTec HMIS Series is the design versatility offered by the interchangeable use of air springs, air struts, coil springs and hydrostruts. The result is a high level of customization and flexibility that facilitates usage in a variety of applications with maximum commonality. Additionally, the ProTec HMIS Series features full electronic system integration of suspension height control, active damping, electronic differential lock controls and electronic stability control. The ProTec HMIS Series also offers the following features and benefits: • Up to 38-degree turn angle delivers optimum best-in-class maneuverability. • Up to 21 inches of total wheel travel provides maximum off-road mobility. • Lightweight materials and design architecture maximize payload capacity. • Modular systems based architecture allows for common gearing and suspension components to be used across an entire family of vehicles. • System flexibility allows for integration into multiple chassis types, including monocoque, space frame or standard frame rails. • All military suspensions are backed by global aftermarket support.

Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.
The Height of Professionalism Many of you know through my blogs, columns and other sources that we have moved recently. After a bad experience in the past with movers, my wife and I decided that I would be in charge of arranging the movers for our move. After all, I was an owner-operator and driver for seven glorious years in this household goods industry and understand the problems to be expected during a home move. That’s not to mention the fact that my business is talking about professionalism and leadership, so I know what I am expecting in professional movers. I started by calling the company I thought showed true professionalism through their equipment, name, etc., well known in my area as the experts and are a fairly large company. The meeting went well with their estimate being what I expected but there were a few items listed in the estimate that were not mentioned in our meeting. Now I had no thoughts about calling anyone else, but with a “for sale” sign in your front yard, you are a beacon for moving company’s sales people. I then decided to make a call to a company who had left a flyer in our mailbox. This company was very professional and very detailed in their estimate. They even told us how to save money by bringing the boxes out to the garage for the movers (I thought that was why we were hiring them!) Their estimate came close to
the first company’s estimate; they were professional but nothing special. Lo and behold a surprise! My friend recommends a company he used that was good so I decided to get a third estimate. I setup an appointment with the receptionist for a specific time the next week. No show! The salesperson doesn’t show up, call, nothing! To me first impressions count, and in my mind this company just lost some business. The next day I received a call from the salesman (owner of the company) confirming my appointment for the afternoon. After letting him know he was 24 hours late for his appointment, the phone went dead. Since I was home, I told him if he wanted to come by anyway I would let him go through the motions. The owner showed up and was very apologetic as well as professional. To make up for his mistake he reduced his rate and bent over backwards to make sure I was happy. His estimate also came in quite a bit cheaper than the other two companies not counting the rate reduction. We decided to give them a try with a little hesitation that they would miss the moving day altogether. The day of the move I was impressed. The company called ahead of arrival, the guys showed up with the right equipment which is why the last movers we had didn’t get called back and their equipment was very clean and neat. All employees wore uniform shirts, were clean and polite. I was also surprised to get three experienced guys as in the summer many
companies split up the experienced guys and fill in team members with unemployment specialists. The best is yet to come. The move was done, on time to their estimate, without any damage, and with the owner showing up near the end to ensure we were totally satisfied. Now this company understands customer service. They took what started as a bad situation, corrected it, and then showed the excellent customer service they had to offer. Wow! So, why tell you this story? What has it got to do with trucking? Well I’m telling this story for a couple of reasons. I like to acknowledge good leadership and professionalism and two, I believe it is an example of how all companies can check on the type of customer service they should strive for. Now if you’re a driver you may not have a team but your interaction with your customers are just as important. This month has “National Trucking Week” which is a celebration for all of those involved in the transportation market, if you’re already operating in a professional manner then keep going and keep up the good work. If your customer service skills may have been sliding lately, then use this benchmark for a new start. I would like to say a giant “Thank You!” to all of the people that are a part of the transportation industry. Celebrate National Trucking Week as you truly deserve it. Until next time.

TransCore 2010 Carrier Survey Finds Frequent Load Board Users Have Higher Revenue and Profit Per Truck
ased on a recent survey of more than 500 carriers, TransCore’s 2010 Carrier Benchmark Survey found that carriers using load boards for more than 40 percent of their loads earned $800 more per truck every month than carriers who used load boards less frequently. The TransCore Carrier Benchmark Survey also showed that all carriers’ revenues had trended up by almost $1,500 per truck per month over 2009 as the economy improved, freight increased, and rates trended up. Full survey results are available at www.transcorefreightsolutions.com. “There is a myth that carriers don’t need to use load boards when freight is abundant,” said David Schrader, senior vice president, TransCore Freight Business Services, “But this survey calls that into question. Thousands of small carriers use our services as a kind of 24/7 sales department that helps them compete with larger carriers who have in-house sales staff.” Of the companies surveyed, 60 percent reported they had ten or fewer trucks, and 87 percent reported having 50 or fewer. TransCore’s 2010 Carrier Benchmark survey also revealed the following information about frequent load board users (those companies with 40 percent or more of their loads coming from load boards): • They averaged 3 cents more in revenue per mile in 2010 than less frequent users • Frequent load board users averaged 309 more load miles per truck every month than less frequent users. • As a group, they averaged 4.2 percent fewer empty miles every
month than carriers who used load boards less often. Brokers, 3PLs, carriers, and owner-operators in North America are expected to list more than 60 million loads and trucks this year across a variety of services feeding TransCore’s DAT Network. As a result of this high volume, TransCore’s North American Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight availability throughout the United States and Canada. The DAT Network sets the standard for load board services in the North America by providing: • The most loads and trucks found on any load board on the in ternet or in truck stops, • The highest number of exclusive loads found on a single load board, • The best quality brokers in the industry with the highest credit scores and lowest-days-to-pay. TransCore’s Commercial Technology Group is a provider of transportation solutions in the United States and Canada serving brokers, carriers, owner-operators and shippers with best-in-class products. Load boards include Loadlink in Canada and TransCore 3sixty powered by the DAT Network in the United States, which has set the industry standard for the spot freight marketplace since 1978. TransCore provides fleet compliance, distribution and intermodal services, automated carrier safety and insurance monitoring, truckload rate indices for contract markets, and the most popular broker logistics software.

How will CSA 2010 Affect Canadian Carriers? CSA 2010 will impact ALL carriers with USDOT numbers that operate in U.S. INTER state commerce. This means a Canadian carrier that enters the United States would be subject to U.S. roadside inspections and U.S. crash data. All actions occurring in the U.S. will be tabulated, as they were previously under SafeStat. Data originating in Canada will have no bearing on the CSA 2010 score. LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT"YOUR CARRIER" CSA 2010 STATUS Canadian Motor Carriers, operating in the USA did you check your CSA 2010 status? If you did lets go over the results. How are your roadside inspections turning out? Be sure to include all roadside inspections. Roadside inspections needn’t be a cause for anxiety among drivers, provided they have the information they need, it is up to date, and the vehicle is in good operating condition. Roadside inspections are temporary inconveniences. For the driver who isn’t prepared, or whose vehicle isn’t properly maintained, they can turn into long-term delays. Where did the inspection take place? What was the inspector like? Were any defects or violations found? If so, what happened next? Poor results from a single roadside inspection can put a vehicle and the driver out of service. Too many violations and defects by one carrier and a full-scale in-house compliance audit may result and you could become a target for roadside inspections.
ROADSIDE INSPECTIONS TRAINING The main objective is to increase awareness of the frequency at which roadside inspections may be encountered. This training will instruct drivers how to prepare their vehicle and documents for inspection, and how to conduct themselves during an inspection. A secondary objective is to promote safety awareness among drivers. Drivers who keep their rigs clean and well-maintained, conduct conscientious pre-trip and post-trip inspections and keep their logbook current not only have an easier time during an inspection, chances are they are probably operating safely, too. Finally, this program will identify some of the negative consequences realized by the driver and the company from failed roadside inspections. Roadside inspections are a fact of life for the professional driver. If a driver is selected, whether at random or for a particular reason, it’s important that he or she knows what to expect during the inspection. More importantly, by knowing what to expect, the driver can take precautions to ensure that the vehicle will pass inspection, and take action — such as keeping the logbook up to date and driving safely — to avoid being put out of service. The Six Levels of Inspection: Level I - North American Standard Inspection Level II - Walk around Driver/ Vehicle Inspection Level III- Driver-Only Inspection
Level IV - Special Inspection Level V - Vehicle-Only Inspection Level VI - Radioactive Materials Hauler Inspection Some tips on things you can do to make the roadside inspection as painless as possible, as well as what management should be teaching their drivers. • Conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection every day • Make sure all documentation is correct, up-to-date and located in a central location • Be aware of paperwork issues when hauling hazmat and proper location of documents within truck at all times • Keep logbook current and accessible at all times • Be courteous and professional • Drive safely to avoid the likelihood of a roadside inspection due to a traffic stop Ultimately, roadside inspections are meant to improve the safety of drivers, their vehicles and other motorists on the road. They are meant to protect everyone . . . including professional drivers. Carriers and drivers if you are looking for a good documented course on ROADSIDE INSPECTIONS please call PTSI @ 1-289 244 9509 ask for Evan.

On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

End of her political career? When the controversy
erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.
Personal relationships not working out:
I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to.” The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft.” Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

tarting November 2010, a new system will help improve road safety by keeping uninsured vehicles off Ontario’s roads. A new electronic verification system, developed by the province and the Insurance Bureau of Canada will provide on-the-spot confirmation of valid insurance coverage during the licence plate renewal process. The ability to check for insurance in real-time means fewer uninsured vehicles on Ontario’s roads and less risk to other drivers. In Ontario it is mandatory for all vehicles to have valid insurance coverage. Currently, drivers are required to provide proof of valid insurance when renewing their driver’s licence plates. Drivers who have insurance or vehicle-information issues in their registration information will be notified in writing approximately 120 days prior to their licence plate expiration date -- giving them time to correct or update their information. QUICK FACTS • There are approximately 13.6 million registered passenger vehicles in Ontario. • All vehicles on Ontario’s roads must be insured. There are tough penalties for driving without insurance: - A fine of up to $25,000 for a first offence - A fine of up to $50,000 for a second offence, and the possibility of a driver’s licence suspension for up to one year

Flat tyre Four high school boys afflicted with spring fever skipped morning classes. After lunch, they reported to the teacher that they had a flat tyre. Much to their relief she smiled and said, “Well, you missed a test today so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper.” Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she said: “First Question: Which tyre was flat?”

LYME DISEASE

uring the summer months, many people venture outdoors to participate in activities such as hiking, biking and camping. Spending time in heavily wooded or grassy areas increases your chance of contracting tick born conditions such as Lyme disease. Interestingly, I recently treated a patient whom I suspected to have this illness. As a result, I have decided to talk about Lyme disease for this month’s article. Let’s get started. According to recent statistics, Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness in Europe and North America. Lyme disease is caused by bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi. In most cases in North America, this bacterium is carried and transmitted by deer ticks. These tiny ticks are about the size of a pin head and are brown in color. As you may guess, they are often very difficult to see. Deer ticks mainly feed on the blood of mice, small birds and deer but may also feed on the blood of humans and other animals. Often, they live in small bushes or tall grass. In order to contract Lyme disease, you must be bitten by an infected deer tick. The symptoms of Lyme disease
can vary greatly from person to person. This is due to the fact that this illness can affect different parts the body. The most common symptom is a rash that begins as a small red bump. This rash, which may grow up to 12 inches in size, often resembles a bull’s eye, with a red ring surrounding a clear area and a red center. This rash is called an erythema migrans and affects about 70-80 percent of infected people. In addition to a rash, Lyme disease can cause other symptoms such as joint pain, flu-like symptoms, and neurological problems. The latter is caused by inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain. In rare cases, people experience heart problems, eye inflammation, hepatitis and severe fatigue. It is important to seek medical attention if you have been bitten by a tick and experience any symptoms as the treatment of Lyme disease is most successful if administered early. Lyme disease is treated by antibiotic medications. Oral antibiotics are the standard treatment protocol for the early stages of the illness. A 10-14 day course of antibiotics is usually sufficient. In cases where the disease has progressed, intravenous antibiotics are effective in eliminating the infections however, may causes side effects such
as lower white blood cell count and mild to severe diarrhea. There are a few precautions that you can take in order to decrease your risk of getting Lyme disease. Firstly, wear long pants and sleeves
when walking in wooded or grassy areas. Also, use insect repellents which contain DEET with a concentration of approximately 10-30 percent. Lastly, check yourself and your pets for ticks and shower as soon as you possible. Well, I hope you found this article interesting and informative. Next time you are spending time in the great outdoors, keep these simple hints in mind. Until next month, drive safely.
