Younger children often have limited experience with traffic and lack the skills to negotiate traffic safely. Motorists need to take special care while driving and especially around the bus stop areas. When a school bus has stopped and has activated its flashing red lights, all vehicles travelling behind, or approaching the bus, must come to a complete stop before reaching the bus. Drivers who fail to stop in these conditions face a $490.00 fine and 6 demerit points. Please remember that road safety is a shared responsibility and parents, teachers, students, motorists and everyone else play a significant role. The National Trucking Week (September 2-8) is a special occasion to acknowledge and spotlight the contributions of the hundreds of thousands of men and women of the Canadian trucking industry who keep the country’s freight moving, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We take this opportunity to thank every one who has chosen to build a career in the trucking industry and contribute to the growth of our economy.

York Regional Police recently provided details on Project Sideswipe, a case involving nine alleged staged collisions that occurred in York Region along with suspected associated false medical billings from several medical rehab and assessment centres located in Brampton, Toronto and Mississauga. It is alleged that this ring recruited drivers and passengers to take part in staging collisions to support accident benefit insurance claims where medical rehab and assessment centres use the names, signatures and college registration numbers of medical practitioners, without their proper authorization, and invoice insurance companies for services that were not rendered. According to a recent KPMG study the cost of auto insurance fraud in Ontario ranges between $770 million and $1.6 billion per year. Fighting fraud and controlling it is in everyone’s best interest. Border security, delays cost Canadians $19.1 B annually

anada-U.S. border maintenance costs Canadian governments and taxpayers up to $19.1 billion annually, according to a new report from the Fraser Institute, Canada’s leading public policy think-tank. The report, Measuring the Costs of the Canada-US Border, examines Canada’s expenditures on heightened border security since 9-11 and associated reductions in trade and tourism. Calculating the overall annual cost at $19.1 billion, or about 1.5 per cent of Canada’s GDP, the report notes that the 2011 Beyond the Border Declaration offers both countries an opportunity to eliminate costly border inefficiencies. “Canadians and Americans are at a crossroads: either we continue with incremental and uncoordinated border programs as we have often done since 9-11 or we begin to create a new border regime,” said Alexander Moens, Fraser Institute senior fellow and co-author of the report. The report calculates that since 2001, the share of Canadian exports destined for the United States fell to 74.9 per cent, down from 86 per cent in 2000. In addition, the share of U.S.-bound merchandise exports as a component of Canada’s aggregate economic output fell to 17.2 per cent as of 2010, down from 31 per cent in 2000. Post-9-11 border thickening has also adversely affected tourism. According to Statistics Canada, the number of overnight trips by American residents visiting Canada fell by 23 per cent over the past decade, shrinking from 15.2 million in 2000 to 11.7 million in 2009, the lowest number since 1985. The number of same-day return trips fell from 28.8 million to 8.8 million, a decline of 69 per cent. The report suggests that the 2011 Beyond the Border Declaration between Canada and the United States, in which both governments agreed on creating an “integrated, multi-modal customs and transportation security regime,” could strengthen North American trade while reducing border costs for taxpayers, traders, and travellers. Overall, Beyond the Border offers fairly specific goals and a realistic timeframe (between one and three years) for most initiatives, including: • Harmonized border programs: Canada and the United States will begin to jointly undertake criteria outlining how goods

are to enter or leave the trade zone. Offshore cargo bound for either the U.S. or Canada will be inspected and cleared once for both countries. The two countries will deepen cooperation on passenger pre-screening for prospective visitors to either Canada or the U.S. Both countries will update their technology to install a complete arrival and departure regime for travellers, and Canada will also update its baggage-inspection technology to harmonize its screening with U.S. standards. Canada will also emulate the use of Radio Frequency Identification technology in the U.S. so that vehicles crossing the land border can proceed faster. • Harmonized regulations: As differences between the two markets shrink, the need for non-security inspection on the border decreases. The plan is to harmonize the various “trusted traders” programs including the Canadian supply-chain security program, Partners in Protection (PIP), and its American equivalent, Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT). Harmonizing these initiatives is long overdue and should produce savings by reducing duplicative administration costs. • Improved border-crossing infrastructure: One important proposal is the construction of a new bridge between Windsor and Detroit. The frictionless flow of commercial traffic between Southern Ontario and Michigan is vital for an integrated and thriving North American automotive industry. Since 9-11, long wait times at border crossings in the Windsor-Detroit corridor have threatened the integrity of “just-in-time” manufacturing processes and have added extra production costs to automobile manufacturing, thereby hurting the competitiveness and profitability of the North American automotive industry.

anitoulin Transport will be featured in the hit TV series, Ice Road Truckers, when it teams up with veteran truck driver, Alex Debogorski, for Season 6 this coming Fall. The new season from Shaw Media’s History Channel, promises to be another nail-biting exposé of this gritty occupation. Ice Road Truckers showcases a specialized area of the trucking industry unknown to most. In some of the coldest regions of North America, many communities can be reached only for a few months each year, when rivers, lakes and seas freeze over and make it possible for trucks to get in. Ice Road Truckers follows some of the drivers who tackle these challenging and dangerous conditions to deliver the vital goods that communities at the very top of the world need to survive. rantford truck driver Harvey McDonald, who runs for Winnipeg-based TransX, has been awarded the prestigious Owner/ Operator of the Year award by Truck News magazine. The Owner/Operator of the Year award, now in its 19th year, is the longestrunning award of its kind. It recognizes an owner/operator who demonstrates business excellence, environmental awareness, community involvement, heroism and a commitment to safety. McDonald has been named the 2012 Owner/Operator of the Year due to his professionalism, impeccable safety record and long history of helping others. Through his 50-year driving career, McDonald has never been involved in an accident. He has a long history of stopping to help others in need, including an Alberta cowgirl whose cattle had escaped onto the road. Not only did he stop to help round up the

cattle, he also stayed behind to rebuild the fence. McDonald routinely works through Christmas and other holidays so that drivers with young families can enjoy the time with their together. Today, he delivers freight across North America, usually with his poodle Micky at his side. McDonald was presented with the award - including $6,000 cash, a diamond ring and an assortment of prizes from sponsors Castrol, Goodyear and Mack Trucks at the Fergus Truck Show in late July. “Harvey is a true ambassador for the trucking industry,” said James Menzies, executive editor of Truck News. “He has travelled more than four million miles over 50 years without a single accident. That alone garnered our attention. But his selflessness and willingness to always help others is what made Harvey truly stand out. He is beyond deserving of the title Owner/Operator of the Year.”

During National Trucking Week, various events will be occurring across the country where the trucking community in Canada – and we hope others – will come together to celebrate a job well done, to recognize those who make it happen and to promote the industry’s dedication to safety – not only of our own but that of the people with whom trucks share the roads and highways – and to environmental enhancement. There will be barbeques, company picnics and all kinds of other things happening. These celebrations may seem modest in comparison to what the industry and its people are asked to do every week of the year. But, they are also befitting an industry that works hard for every dime, that takes satisfaction in a job well done and spending time with each other. The industry is emerging from the depths of the recession. And, while we are far from out of the woods yet in terms of the economy, it is a testament to the hard work, the dedication and the perseverance of everyone in every company that there is every reason to believe that the industry is poised for new growth and new opportunity. As I have said before, the glory years of trucking are yet to come. We have the best people, providing the best possible service. Trucking is more than a job to most people in the industry; it is a way of life – one that gets into your blood. So, to all those people who make the industry -- drivers, mechanics, dispatchers, or if you work at any one of the hundreds of other jobs that keep our economy moving, I thank you on behalf of the Canadian Trucking Alliance and the provincial trucking associations. It is surely a privilege and an honour for me to be associated with such a remarkable group of individuals. Most of the people of the trucking industry are unsung heroes. Are you a distracted driver? (NC)—Most Canadians are pretty confident behind the wheel, but when it comes to keeping their eyes on the road not all drivers stick to the road rules. According to a recent survey by TD Insurance, the majority of Canadians (60%) consider themselves to be better drivers than those they share the road with, yet over onequarter of Canadians admit to engaging in risky behaviours while driving, including, listening to loud music (28%), looking down at a map (26%), driving while excessively tired (26%) and scrounging for items in the glove compartment or a purse/bag (24%). “Car accidents happen every day, and while you may be confident in your driving abilities, it’s important to always be on top of your game when you’re behind the wheel to stay safe and avoid unwanted insurance claims down the road,” says Dave Minor, vice president at TD Insurance. Minor shares his top tips for staying safe on the roads: • Know the rules of the road – If it’s been a while since your last driving test, take the time to re-educate yourself – especially when travelling because rules often differ between provinces. For example, speed limits in urban areas are generally lower than those through rural regions. • Pay attention – Don’t text, eat, or put on makeup while you are driving. If you’re driving in conditions with low visibility, like at night or in heavy rain or fog, slow down and keep more distance between you and the car in front of you. • Don’t miss your annual checkups – Take your car in to be serviced to ensure things like the battery, lights and brakes are functioning well. Accidents happen, but there’s no need for surprises. Speak to your insurer to review your auto insurance policy too, to make sure you have the right coverage.

Garmin Introduces dēzl 760 Truck Navigator with Seven-Inch Display and Active Lane Guidance

armin International has announced dēzl 760, the company’s first trucking navigator with a seven-inch display and a new Active Lane Guidance feature to help truckers confidently navigate intersections and exits. The dēzl 760 is packed with trucking-specific functions, such as route calculation based on truck attributes, trucking points of interest (POIs), Hours of Service (HOS) logging, an extra-loud speaker and backup camera support. Compatible with Garmin Smartphone Link, it is the only navigation device for truckers with the ability to receive real-time information through a smartphone app, such as fuel prices, traffic camera images and weather. Truck-Specific Navigation With detailed maps and leading Garmin navigation technology, the dēzl 760 provides truck-specific routes and turn-by-turn directions based on vehicle height, weight, length and carriage. Users can simply enter their truck’s profile and the device will consider truck-verified roads that are suitable for the truck’s characteristics. It also provides warnings of upcoming hazards such as sharp curves. The device can save multiple truck profiles and users can

change the active profile at any point. Finding pit stops is a cinch with trucking specific POIs, including truck stops, weigh stations, dealerships and washes. Garmin Exit Services allows drivers to quickly search for upcoming POIs at highway exits. Also included are sunrise and sunset times to follow after-sunset regulations, mile markers to share a location with others, and state/country border notices to comply with legal requirements. New Active Lane Guidance Utilizing the large seven-inch display of the dēzl 760, the new Active Lane Guidance is displayed in a split-screen next to the map view to guide drivers to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit. In a moving lane animation a purple line indicates the way the driver should follow, showing truckers exactly which lane they have to be in and helping to avoid potentially dangerous last-minute maneuvers. Automatically Log Miles and Fuel Usage To make it easier for truckers to keep track of their trip data, the dēzl 760 automatically archives fuel usage and the number of miles driven in a given state or province. Truckers can use this information to fill out logbooks, forms and tax materials. This data can be exported from the unit and can be beneficial in submitting the quarterly International Fuel Tax Agreement Documentation (IFTA) truck drivers are required to report. Fleet Management Interface Compatible The dēzl 760 allows truck drivers to record their Hours of Service (HOS) and it warns of violations in advance. It is also compatible with the Garmin Fleet Management Interface (FMI) and can be integrated with a telematics data transponder manufactured by a Garmin authorized partner. This provides a digital solution that complies with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations for Automatic on-board Recording Devices (AOBRD). ROADCHECK 2012 FINDS DRIVER AND VEHICLE OUT-OF-SERVICE RATES NEAR HISTORIC LOWS

n June, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) member jurisdictions conducted a record 74,072 truck and bus inspections during the 25th Annual Roadcheck, a commercial vehicle safety enforcement and outreach event. Of those inspections, 48,815 were North American Standard Level 1 inspections — the most comprehensive roadside inspection, of which 22.4 percent of vehicles and 3.9 percent of drivers were placed out of service (OOS). These vehicle and driver OOS rates for Level 1 inspections represent the second lowest achieved in 25 years, continuing its successful historic trend downward. For comparison, in 1991 (the first year comprehensive data were available,) the Level 1 OOS rates were 34.8 percent for vehicles and 5.6 percent for drivers. The overall OOS rates for the entire event in 2012 (includes all inspection levels) were 20.9 percent for vehicles and 4.6 percent for drivers, both of which were higher than last year’s numbers. Despite the positive trend on the Level 1’s, this highlights that one in five vehicles selected for inspection was found with a violation serious enough to be considered an imminent safety hazard. These mixed results indicate that, while the attention paid by industry to maintenance and regulatory compliance generally is improving, more needs to be done by industry and enforcement alike. Roadcheck 2012 emphasized a back-to-the-basics focus, with special attention paid toward braking systems and hours-of-service, the top ranking violation categories for vehicles and drivers, respectively. During the event, CVSA estimates that over 9,500 CVSA and FMCSA inspectors participated at approximately 2,500 locations across North America. CVSA sponsors Roadcheck each year with the support of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico). inspections of passenger carrying vehicles and 4,826 inspections of vehicles carrying hazardous materials. Of passenger carrying vehicles inspected, 8.6 percent of vehicles and 2.5 percent of drivers were placed out of service. Of vehicles carrying hazardous materials, 15.6 percent of vehicles and 2.3 percent of drivers were placed out of service. Approximately 27,000 CVSA Decals were issued during Roadcheck 2012 to vehicles that were found to be without violations in the critical inspection items.

How Many Times Have You Been Told “No!” H

ow many times have you been told no? I’m not talking about keeping your hands out of the cookie jar type of no, I’m talking about people telling you can’t do certain things, or you’re not good enough, or you don’t have the talent, or experience. We hear these things everyday, people challenging us from moving forward. Many times looking for a job or position we hear this from recruiters, and we start believing it ourselves. How many times did someone tell you that you didn’t have enough experience for the type of work you wanted and after that you stopped looking at the industry. How many talented people have moved on to other areas because someone didn’t give them a chance to prove themselves? I have been told these things many times through out my life. I was told at a very young age that I wasn’t good enough to make it through school. After all I had trouble getting past grade 4. I was bored and told the same thing through out high school before dropping out. I finally got my diploma. My doctor as a kid told me if I didn’t stop eating I wouldn’t make it past the age of 35. I am now 49 years old and very healthy. I was told I wasn’t good enough to become an artist in high school. I own an illustration business to this day. When I decided to get

into trucking I was told don’t get into that industry, there’s no money there. In the industry I was told don’t do this or don’t do that, you’ll never make it. I have been in the transportation industry for 30 years

happening. Almost everything I have been told no to, I have

completed successfully. So how do you start telling yourself yes? Take a look at your track record and make some notes as to the accomplishments you have achieved. Look at where you want to go and see where you need some help in experience or expertise. Sometimes seeing all of these things in one place helps boost our spirits and gets us moving on the right track. If you are trying to get a job

a n d have had a very successful career. Folks, it is all crap! After a while with everyone telling you “no” you start to believe it yourself, and there lies the first problem. I used to believe what everyone was telling me also and it took me a long time to get over it. Once you believe in yourself and start telling yourself you CAN do things is when they start

then let the potential employer know the type of person you are and your work ethic. That may replace some experience and encourage someone to take a chance on you. Maybe there is a way of gaining some experience through another program. If you’re a recruiter, think differently about that next candidate. Of course stay within your hiring criteria, but also look at the person. Many times business is done on a hunch or gut feeling. If you have a gut feeling that a person is good, but the experience is lacking find a way to get that person in the door. The help now will bring in strong loyalty and work ethic down the road. People just need to hear a yes once in a while. We’ve all made mistakes in the past, it doesn’t mean we can’t have a bright future. I know I did!

For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. Digital Natives or Digital Immigrants? Who Should Handle Social Media for Your Transportation Company? W

hen it comes to getting help with your company’s social media, where do you turn? Do you seek out the 40-something New Media ‘guru’ or turn to the college intern, who despite their strange hair, questionable body piercings and lack of hands-on business experience just ‘gets it’ where social media is concerned? There has been a lot of buzz recently over whether companies should be hiring digital natives (read: kids who learned to text before they could walk) or digital immigrants (read: old farts like me who are a little later to the social media party but who understand strategy, know our business and are now using social media as a way to grow it). The answer? Neither...and Both. The bottom line is that whatever generation they hail from, the ideal candidate to head up your social media strategy and digital marketing campaigns needs characteristics from both of these groups. Whether you are doing it yourself, adding social media to the role of your Marketing person or hiring a dedicated Social Media Manager, here are five criteria to consider when you are looking for someone to fill this role: www.roadtoday.com

1. Strategy and Marketing Experience Think about it: This person will be responsible for promoting and growing your business online. They absolutely must have a solid grasp on strategy and strategic marketing. A social media

impacts real-time sales. On top of this, they not only need to be able to write engaging status updates, blog posts, messages and participate effectively in online discussions, but they increasingly need to be able to communicate well on camera as video-based social media continues to evolve. 3. Tech Savvy Social media is evolving at an astonishing rate with new buzzwords, tools, platforms and applications popping up all over the place. It takes dedication, a solid understanding of social media and where it is headed, not to mention a strong sense of intuition to be able to continually and effectively evaluate which of these new applications warrants investment by your business. Ideally, social media should be an organization-wide initiative with participation from all areas of your business. But someone needs to be in charge to make sure the investment is contributing to your business goals... and to keep things from falling off the rails! Whether that person is 23 or 63, one thing is certain: They have their work cut out for them!

Fact: The ATSSA is alive and well Fact: The ATSSA in Toronto is the founding Chapter; all of the other ATSSA organizations were branches of the Chapter. Fact: The branches had strayed from the original bylaws of the ATSSA. Numerous attempts were made to get the branches to conform to the bylaws. Requests were made for input from the branches in regards to changing of the bylaws to make life easier for them. None were received. The Board of Management of the ATSSA Chapter offered the branches two options: Option 1 - conform to the current bylaws and strive to change them in future meetings Option 2 - leave the ATSSA and form their own group The branches chose to go their own way The CFMS, which operated with input from the Chapter and Branches, was as a result of this cancelled for 2012. FMCSA Adds HazMat Basic to CSA, Makes Other Changes T

he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced several changes to its Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) enforcement program, including installing a new HazMat BASIC. The move -- which goes into effect in December 2012 changes the Cargo-Related BASIC to the Hazardous Materials Compliance BASIC to better identify hazmat safety and compliance problems, the agency says. The agency says its analysis shows that this change will identify more carriers with hazmat concerns (33.8% versus 29.1%). In response to criticisms about the reliability of the information, FMCSA will make this visible only to carriers and law enforcement starting in December. FMCSA will conduct further monitoring before it is made public. Other changes include: - Changing the Fatigued Driving BASIC to the more specific Hours-of-Service (HOS) Compliance BASIC to more accurately reflect violations in this area; and weighting HOS paper and electronic logbook violations equally. - Strengthening the Vehicle Maintenance BASIC by including cargo/load securement violations from the current Cargo-Related BASIC. - Including intermodal equipment violations that should be found during drivers’ pre-trip inspections. - Removing 1 to 5 mph speeding violations to ensure citations are consistent with current speedometer regulations. - Ensuring all recorded violations accurately reflect the inspection type (i.e., only driver violations will be recorded under driver inspections). Heat Rash W

hen I tell patients that the red itchy skin irritation that they are suffering from is heat rash, many respond by saying, “I thought only babies get heat rash!” Although heat rash is far more common in children and infants, heat rash can affect adults as well. For professional

the sweat glands to become blocked. However, intense physical activity which leads to excessive perspiration is one of the main risk factors. Certain types of medication such as beta blockers and opiates may increase sweat production which in turn can cause heat rash. In addition, some creams

within one to two weeks. In more severe cases, deeper layers of skin are involved. This can lead to more intense symptoms such as small red bumps that may feel itchy or prickly. Also, one may notice that the affected area does not produce sweat. As stated earlier, heat rash usually disappears on its own

truck drivers, heat rash can become an issue during the hot and humid summer months. Heat rash occurs when sweat glands become blocked thus trapping the perspiration under the skin. Under normal circumstances, sweat evaporates from the surface of the skin however; if it becomes trapped beneath the skin it can cause inflammation or an irritating rash. In many cases, it is unknown what actually causes

and ointments can block sweat glands. The symptoms of heat rash usually develop in folds of skin and areas where clothing tends to cause friction. Common locations include armpits, elbow creases and groin. In mild cases of heat rash, only the surface layer of skin is affected. Blisters and bumps which are filled with a clear fluid may form. This type of heat rash usually clears up on its own

without medical treatment. However, it is important to seek medical attention if the rash does not go away within few weeks or there are signs of infection. There are no specific tests required to diagnose heat rash. Your doctor will arrive at a diagnosis based on a detailed medical history and physical examination. The first option for treatment of heat rash is

to reduce the amount of sweating by staying in cool air conditioned environments. Secondly, wearing loose, light fitting clothing will allow proper air circulation over the skin. I always recommend to my patients to wear clothing made of “breathable” fabrics when performing any physical activity. In more severe cases, topical therapies may be prescribed in order to relieve discomfort. A common cream is calamine lotion which soothes itching. Topical steroids are sometimes used to reduce inflammation. As you can see, heat rash is not a significant medical problem. However, if it is left untreated for a long period of time, it can become very uncomfortable. If you ever notice the beginnings of heat rash, try to keep in mind these simple treatments and you will be well on the road to recovery. Until next month, drive safely!
